Pope Saint John Paul II
(1920-2005)
Green/White
He became in 1964, Archbishop of Kraków and took part in the Second Vatican Council. On 16 October 1978 he was elected pope and took the name John Paul II. He is remembered for his exceptional apostolic zeal, particularly for families, young people and the sick. He departed peacefully in the Lord in 2005. He was canonized by Pope Francis on 27 April, the Second Sunday of Easter 2014.

First reading: Ephesians 2:12-22
Do not forget that you had no Christ and were excluded from membership of Israel, aliens with no part in the covenants with their Promise; you were immersed in this world, without hope and without God. But now in Christ Jesus, you that used to be so far apart from us have been brought very close, by the blood of Christ. For he is the peace between us, and has made the two into one and broken down the barrier which used to keep them apart, actually destroying in his own person the hostility caused by the rules and decrees of the Law. This was to create one single New Man in himself out of the two of them and by restoring peace through the cross, to unite them both in a single Body and reconcile them with God: in his own person he killed the hostility. Later he came to bring the good news of peace, peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near at hand. Through him, both of us have in the one Spirit our way to come to the Father. So you are no longer aliens or foreign visitors: you are citizens like all the saints, and part of God’s household. You are part of a building that has the apostles and prophets for its foundations, and Christ Jesus himself for its main cornerstone. As every structure is aligned on him, all grow into one holy temple in the Lord; and you too, in him, are being built into a house where God lives, in the Spirit.

I will hear what the Lord God has to say, a voice that speaks of peace. His help is near for those who fear him and his glory will dwell in our land.

The Lord will make us prosper and our earth shall yield its fruit. Justice shall march before him and peace shall follow his steps.

Meditation
When the question of readiness arises, one may be tempted to think or say, ‘‘I am still very young’’, ‘‘I still have a long way to go’’. But the question remains: Are you ready? This could be in reference to beginning a new job, preparing for a journey or even welcoming a newborn into the family. What are we to expect? The best advice to new parents is this: “Expect the unexpected.” In this way, they can avoid disappointments. Today’sToday’s Gospel puts us in the same position as the servants waiting for their master’smaster’s return. Their lamps are kept burning, food is reserved, and they are all set to serve their master as they have always done. What does Jesus expect to find us doing when he comes? He would love to find a student studying, a civil servant going about his job and find each person alert. So, do all you can to be ready to carry out your responsibilities today. Do everything possible to obey God’s commands, forgive those who offend you and love those who need your love.

Saint John of Bridlington
(1319 – 1379)

John Twenge was born near Bridlington, in Yorkshire. In his lifetime he enjoyed a reputation for great holiness and for miraculous powers. After his death the fame of the miracles wrought by his intercession spread rapidly through the land, and he was canonized by Pope Boniface IX in 1404.

But God loved us with so much love that he was generous with his mercy: when we were dead through our sins, he brought us to life with Christ – it is through grace that you have been saved – and raised us up with him and gave us a place with him in heaven, in Christ Jesus. This was to show for all ages to come, through his goodness towards us in Christ Jesus, how infinitely rich he is in grace. Meditation
Jesus warns us against worldly possessions. A man’s life does not consist of the abundance of his possessions but his spiritual growth. Remember that at the end of our lives on earth, we shall return with what we let go for the good of others. Christian life is a call to let go of everything for the sake of others. As Christians, we are followers of Jesus who let go of even his life for our sake. Everything God has blessed us with is for the service of others. The possessions we accumulate tend to preoccupy the time and attention that could have been channelled to our spiritual growth. Note that possession does not refer only to material accumulation. It could be other things as well, even friendship.

Meditation
The two sons of Zebedee believed Jesus would establish an earthly kingdom that would free Israel from Roman oppression, and they wanted prestigious positions in it. They asked Jesus to «grant us that we may sit one on your right hand and the other on your left, in your glory» (10:37). Even after Jesus explained the sort of kingdom he had come to build and did not mock them for their question, they continued to pursue their goals. Yet despite James and John’s and my willingness to endure any hardship for the sake of Christ, most of us whine about the smallest issues. If we claim to be willing to endure great suffering for Christ, we must also be prepared to endure the annoyances of helping others. God wants to provide for our best interests, not just our wants.

Saints John de Brébeuf,
Isaac Jogues and Companions

Between 1642 and 1649 these eight members of the Society of Jesus, who had travelled to North America to preach the true faith, were killed by the native Huron and Iroquois tribes after horrible tortures. Isaac Jogues died on 18 October 1647, and John de Brébeuf on 16 March 1648.

Meditation
The craze for modern trends in our society is gradually making many Christians lose the taste of their doctrine and belief content. Most often, Christians, out of the fear of being socially ostracized, find it difficult to declare their belief openly. Perhaps, to do the sign of the cross in a pub or party house might be extremely difficult for most Catholics of our present age. We must not be ashamed to declare Christ before people since He was never ashamed to call us his friends, though we have always been unworthy. We should consistently be bold to declare Him before men so that He would declare us before His Father on the last day.

He was a Greek doctor who converted to Christianity. He was a companion of the Apostle Paul, and wrote his Gospel in accordance with Paul’s teaching. He also wrote the Acts of the Apostles, which narrates the early history of the Church up to Paul’s first stay in Rome.

How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings glad tidings of peace, bearing Good News, announcing salvation!

Lord God, who chose Saint Luke to reveal by his preaching and writings the mystery of your love for the poor, grant that those who already glory in your name may persevere as one heart and one soul and that all nations may merit to see your salvation. Grant, we pray, almighty God, that what we have received from your holy altar may sanctify us and make us strong in the faith of the Gospel which Saint Luke proclaimed. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
Every position has a job description that outlines the objectives that must be met. In addition to the twelve disciples following him, Jesus chose seventy-two other followers. Every town and location where He planned to travel personally was supplied with two of them. He initially reminded them they were to pray to God for additional workers, for they were being sent «as lambs among wolves» and would face hostility. Although serving God does not include being unemployed, we prefer to watch others carry out their duties rather than taking on the task ourselves. We don’t want to participate in it because of opposition or criticism. We are also being sent into the world as lambs amid wolves, much like St. Luke, whose feast we celebrate today. There will undoubtedly be opposition, but the Lord encourages us to remain vigilant and to meet difficulties and obstacles with love and kindness rather than hostility. Love, after all, triumphs over everything.

Saint Ignatius of Antioch, Bishop, Martyr ( 107)

He was the second bishop of Antioch after St Peter. He was arrested, condemned to death and transported to Rome to be thrown to the wild beasts in the arena. He was martyred in 107 and his feast was already being celebrated on this day in fourth-century Antioch.

I am crucified with Christ, yet I live; no longer I, but Christ lives in me. I live by faith in the Son of God, who has loved me and given himself up for me.

The truth is bitter, they say. In today’s Gospel passage, we find one of the bitter truths spoken by Jesus. Between his hearers, who build the tombs of the prophets, and their ancestors, who killed the prophets, there is no difference in attitude. The truth of this statement comes out in the attitude of the scribes and Pharisees, who began a furious attack on Jesus and tried to force answers from him on innumerable questions, setting traps to catch him out in something he might say.
