Saint Daniel Comboni
(1831 – 1881)
Green
Daniel Comboni was born in Italy in 1831. He felt the call to evangelize the peoples of Central Africa. He set off to Africa and established several missions. Faithful to his motto “Africa or death” and his plan for the salvation of Africa, he lived and worked for the success of the mission until he died in Khartoum (Sudan) on 10 October 1881, at the age of fifty.

Are you people in Galatia mad? Has someone put a spell on you, in spite of the plain explanation you have had of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ? Let me ask you one question: was it because you practised the Law that you received the Spirit, or because you believed what was preached to you? Are you foolish enough to end in outward observances what you began in the Spirit? Have all the favours you received been wasted? And if this were so, they would most certainly have been wasted. Does God give you the Spirit so freely and work miracles among you because you practise Law, or because you believed what was preached to you?

Meditation
Jesus continues to teach his disciples about prayer, and today he focuses on perseverance. He uses the parable of a man coming to a neighbour in the middle of the night. The man needs food for a friend, an unexpected visitor. The neighbour is already in bed and does not want to be disturbed, but his friend’s persistence forces him to get up and give him what he wants. How much more will God, a loving Father, give to those who ask Him? But why must we ask at all? God does not need to be persuaded or convinced. Persistence in prayer is actually for our good and benefit. What we ask for in prayer is the gift of God’s Spirit: “How much more will the Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him?” This is the Spirit that inspired Jesus in his life and work; a Spirit which is totally at one with the will of the Father. May God’s will be done, not ours.

Born in London in 1801, he was for over twenty years an Anglican clergyman. His studies of the early Church led him progressively towards Catholicism, and in 1845 he embraced “the one true fold of the Redeemer”. He was a prolific and influential writer on a variety of subjects. In 1879 he was created Cardinal by Pope Leo XIII. He died in Birmingham on 11 August 1890. He was beatified by Pope Benedict XVI on 19 September 2010 and canonised by Pope Francis on 13 October 2019.

It was not till fourteen years had passed that I went up to Jerusalem again. I went with Barnabas and took Titus with me. I went there as the result of a revelation, and privately I laid before the leading men the Good News as I proclaim it among the pagans; I did so for fear the course I was adopting or had already adopted would not be allowed. On the contrary, they recognised that I had been commissioned to preach the Good News to the uncircumcised just as Peter had been commissioned to preach it to the circumcised. The same person whose action had made Peter the apostle of the circumcised had given me a similar mission to the pagans. So, James, Cephas and John, these leaders, these pillars, shook hands with Barnabas and me as a sign of partnership: we were to go to the pagans and they to the circumcised. The only thing they insisted on was that we should remember to help the poor, as indeed I was anxious to do. When Cephas came to Antioch, however, I opposed him to his face, since he was manifestly in the wrong. His custom had been to eat with the pagans, but after certain friends of James arrived he stopped doing this and kept away from them altogether for fear of the group that insisted on circumcision. The other Jews joined him in this pretence, and even Barnabas felt himself obliged to copy their behaviour. When I saw they were not respecting the true meaning of the Good News, I said to Cephas in front of everyone, ‘In spite of being a Jew, you live like the pagans and not like the Jews, so you have no right to make the pagans copy Jewish ways. ’

If we analyse more particularly the sentiments of the Lord’s Prayer, we will observe that the model prayer gives portraiture of a model man. It shows (1) Filial faith in “our Father,” (2) reverence in “hallowed,” (3) loyalty in “thy kingdom come,” (4) a conformed spirit in “thy will be done,” (5) recognition of Providence in “give us … our daily bread,” (6) dependence upon grace in “forgive us our debts,” (7) sincere charity in “for we forgive…” (8) and dependence upon the Holy Spirit in “Lead us not…,” etc. Do I have any of these traits in me?

Saint Pelagia

Pelagia, more often called Margaret, was an actress of Antioch who was converted by a sermon of Bishop Nonnus of Edessa. She gave her wealth to Nonnus to aid the poor. She subsequently became a hermitess in a cave on Mount of Olivette. Her feast day is October 8th.

First reading : Galatians 1:13-24
You must have heard of my career as a practising Jew, how merciless I was in persecuting the Church of God, how much damage I did to it, how I stood out among other Jews of my generation, and how enthusiastic I was for the traditions of my ancestors. Then God, who had specially chosen me while I was still in my mother’s womb, called me through his grace and chose to reveal his Son in me, so that I might preach the Good News about him to the pagans. I did not stop to discuss this with any human being, nor did I go up to Jerusalem to see those who were already apostles before me, but I went off to Arabia at once and later went straight back from there to Damascus. Even when after three years I went up to Jerusalem to visit Cephas and stayed with him for fifteen days, I did not see any of the other apostles; I only saw James, the brother of the Lord, and I swear before God that what I have just written is the literal truth. After that I went to Syria and Cilicia, and was still not known by sight to the churches of Christ in Judaea, who had heard nothing except that their one-time persecutor was now preaching the faith he had previously tried to destroy; and they gave glory to God for me.

Meditation
Today we find Jesus in the home of Mary and Martha. Martha is busy, a thing any host would do, and she is “distracted with all the serving”. Serving is something that Jesus himself constantly did, as he said that the son of man did not come to be served but to serve. Martha is overwhelmed by the service while Mary takes the position of a disciple sitting at the master’s feet, so Martha complains about her sister. Listening to his message is something Jesus tells his disciples and the crowd they need to do all the time. Listening involves understanding, accepting and assimilating that message so that it becomes part of our very selves. Following the parable of the Good Samaritan, which we had yesterday, Jesus blends the two personalities of Martha and Mary: he spent long hours bringing healing to people’s lives, being a real neighbour, but also retired to quiet places to be alone in communion with his Father. Also, unlike the others, these sisters were ready to offer Jesus their love and hospitality. They never asked for anything in return; they did not even ask Jesus to raise their brother Lazarus from the dead. Jesus did it out of his own divine will.

The feast of the Holy Rosary was instituted by Pope Pius V to celebrate the anniversary of the defeat of the Turkish fleet at the battle of Lepanto which ended the threat of Muslim domination of the Mediterranean and was ascribed in part to the prayers and processions of the Rosary confraternity in Rome.

Meditation
For many people, their neighbour is the person who lives in the apartment next to theirs, the one with whom they share the same block. In today’s Gospel passage, thanks to the lawyer’s question, Jesus gives us another definition of a neighbour. A neighbour is any human being we come across. Jesus’ definition of neighbour cuts across religious, ethnic and social boundaries. Imagine a Samaritan caring for a Jew, and the Jews looked at Samaritans as outcasts, contaminated and unworthy humans because of their intermarriage with Gentiles. By the parable of the Good Samaritan, Jesus teaches us to give the respect and treatment that are worthy of humans to every human being we meet. In what concrete ways can I practice the challenge Jesus gives me in today’s Gospel passage?

Second Reading : Hebrews 2:9-11
We see in Jesus one who was for a short while made lower than the angels and is now crowned with glory and splendour because he submitted to death; by God’s grace he had to experience death for all mankind. As it was his purpose to bring a great many of his sons into glory, it was appropriate that God, for whom everything exists and through whom everything exists, should make perfect, through suffering, the leader who would take them to their salvation. For the one who sanctifies, and the ones who are sanctified, are of the same stock; that is why he openly calls them brothers.

So then, what God has united, man must not divide.’ Back in the house the disciples questioned him again about this, and he said to them, ‘The man who divorces his wife and marries another is guilty of adultery against her. Meditation
Generally, when young people are in school, they dream of completing their studies and getting a job. The sacrament of marriage offers another dimension in which one goes to school again, where they learn to love and forgive. Today, such authentic commitments are a hard-to-find treasure. Today’s readings allow us to relook at and rediscover the meaning of radical commitment in every human relationship, marriage being the relationship par excellence. The couple’s fidelity to each other symbolises and reflects the faithfulness of God to his people and the faithfulness of Christ to the Church. Marriage is not a matter of mere feelings. It is a gift of the whole person to the other: «it is not good that man should be alone.» God carefully founded this relationship and endowed it with his own initiative. Therefore, for it to be truly authentic, each relationship must be founded on the love God has bestowed. Thus, we must respect marriage as an institution which only God can break, and no man can split apart. The words of Jesus underline the seriousness of marriage, and anyone who tries to attack the institution of marriage is like attacking the bond of God’s commitment to us – God’s love for his people.

Sister Faustina

Sister Faustina was a young, uneducated, nun in a convent of the Congregation of Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy in Poland during the 1930’s. She received extraordinary revelations on God’s loving message of Divine Mercy. Saint Faustina’s revelations are a constant reminder of the message to trust in Jesus’ endless mercy, and to live life mercifully toward others.

All that you have done to us, O Lord, you have done with true judgement, for we have sinned against you and not obeyed your commandments. But give glory to your name and deal with us according to the bounty of your mercy.

Gospel : Luke 10:17-24
The seventy-two came back rejoicing. ‘Lord,’ they said ‘even the devils submit to us when we use your name.’ He said to them, ‘I watched Satan fall like lightning from heaven. Yes, I have given you power to tread underfoot serpents and scorpions and the whole strength of the enemy; nothing shall ever hurt you. Yet do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you; rejoice rather that your names are written in heaven.’ It was then that, filled with joy by the Holy Spirit, he said: ‘I bless you, Father, Lord of heaven and of earth, for hiding these things from the learned and the clever and revealing them to mere children. Yes, Father, for that is what it pleased you to do. Everything has been entrusted to me by my Father; and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.’ Then turning to his disciples he spoke to them in private, ‘Happy the eyes that see what you see, for I tell you that many prophets and kings wanted to see what you see, and never saw it; to hear what you hear, and never heard it.’
Prayer over the Offerings
Grant us, O merciful God, that this our offering may find acceptance with you and that through it the wellspring of all blessing may be laid open before us. Through Christ our Lord.

Remember your word to your servant, O Lord, by which you have given me hope. This is my comfort when I am brought low.
Prayer after Communion
May this heavenly mystery, O Lord, restore us in mind and body, that we may be coheirs in glory with Christ, to whose suffering we are united whenever we proclaim his Death. Who lives and reigns for ever and ever.
Meditation
At the beginning of chapter 10 of the Gospel, according to Luke, we saw how Jesus had sent his 72 disciples out to all the places where he would visit. Today, we see them returning full of joy and satisfaction. “Lord, even the devils submit to us when we use your name.” They discovered that, in his name, they could do the same things that Jesus did. The power of the evil one is being reversed, and he assures them: “I have given you power to tread underfoot serpents and scorpions … nothing shall ever hurt you”. Nothing, as Paul says, can separate us from the love of God, that is, the love that God extends to us at every moment of every day. Jesus tells his disciples the real reason why they should be happy. It is not because they have special powers over evil spirits but because their names are written in heaven. They have been chosen as the instruments for God to do his work, to make the Kingdom a reality. That blessedness granted to the apostles is granted to us today, also. Let us, therefore, count our blessings daily as we continue to receive such uncountable blessings from our God.
