People must think of us as Christ’s servants, stewards entrusted with the mysteries of God. What is expected of stewards is that each one should be found worthy of his trust. Not that it makes the slightest difference to me whether you, or indeed any human tribunal, find me worthy or not. I will not even pass judgement on myself. True, my conscience does not reproach me at all, but that does not prove that I am acquitted: the Lord alone is my judge. There must be no passing of premature judgement. Leave that until the Lord comes; he will light up all that is hidden in the dark and reveal the secret intentions of men’s hearts. Then will be the time for each one to have whatever praise he deserves, from God.

R/ The salvation of the just comes from the Lord.
If you trust in the Lord and do good, then you will live in the land and be secure. If you find your delight in the Lord, he will grant your heart’s desire.

Meditation
The solemn tone with which Jesus says, “the days will come…” (Lk 33:35) foretells his violent death and gives the reason why his followers in the present moment have to rejoice while the Bridegroom is still among them. Before that could happen, Jesus is planting the new form of religion while at the same time putting aside those rigid Jewish forms, making it clear that the old and the new cannot coexist. This new way of religion needs new lifestyle, not necessarily by observing Sabbath and fasting, but rather joy just like in the wedding.

Saint Gregory the Great, Pope, Doctor (540 – 604)

He was elected Pope on 3 September 590, the first monk to be elected to this office. He wrote extensively on pastoral care, spirituality, and morals, and designated himself “servant of the servants of God.” He died on 12 March 604.

The Spirit reaches the depths of everything, even the depths of God. After all, the depths of a man can only be known by his own spirit, not by any other man, and in the same way the depths of God can only be known by the Spirit of God. Now instead of the spirit of the world, we have received the Spirit that comes from God, to teach us to understand the gifts that he has given us. Therefore we teach, not in the way in which philosophy is taught, but in the way that the Spirit teaches us: we teach spiritual things spiritually. An unspiritual person is one who does not accept anything of the Spirit of God: he sees it all as nonsense; it is beyond his understanding because it can only be understood by means of the Spirit. A spiritual man, on the other hand, is able to judge the value of everything, and his own value is not to be judged by other men. As Scripture says: Who can know the mind of the Lord, so who can teach him? But we are those who have the mind of Christ.

Through Christ the teacher, O Lord, instruct those you feed with Christ, the living Bread, that on the feast day of Saint Gregory they may learn your truth and express it in works of charity. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
Jesus is rejected by his own people in Nazareth and he goes back to Capernaum. He goes to the synagogue on the Sabbath as was his custom. As in Nazareth, he reads the scripture and explains it to the congregation. Here the result is wonderment among the people. His words radiate authority, greater authority than they had ever recognized in anyone else. His words, his presence are bad news for the evil spirit. Jesus does not only speak the Word of God with authority but he is the authoritative Word spoken once by the Father; the Word made flesh. Jesus’ authority and power was in his day and continues today to be rooted in his divine nature. There is a lot of power in the name of Jesus. How often do we invoke his name and ask for his assistance, his protection and divine presence?

Blessed André Grasset

He was born in Montréal on 3 April 1758 and ordained priest in 1783. In the face of persecution he took shelter with the Eudist Fathers in Paris. He was executed in 1792 together with almost 200 other priests. He was beatified by Pope Pius XI on 17 October 1926.

Meditation
In today’s Gospel scene it is surprising that those listening to Jesus’ preaching move from great admiration to hatred. Jesus’ home crowd hung on every word he spoke until those words turned to direct and undiluted criticism of them. When that happened, the words that came from his lips ceased to be gracious; they were insulting and infuriating and they made them want his blood. We must admire Jesus’ courage in speaking the hard truth to his people. Often the most difficult people to be truthful with are our closest friends and relatives. We pray and ask the Lord to give us something of the courage he had in today’s Gospel passage.

The Pharisees and some of the Scribes who had come from Jerusalem gathered round Jesus, and they noticed that some of his disciples were eating with unclean hands, that is, without washing them. For the Pharisees, and the Jews in general, follow the tradition of the elders and never eat without washing their arms as far as the elbow; and on returning from the market place they never eat without first sprinkling themselves. There are also many other observances which have been handed down to them concerning the washing of cups and pots and bronze dishes. So these Pharisees and Scribes asked him, ‘Why do your disciples not respect the tradition of the elders but eat their food with unclean hands?’ He answered, ‘It was of you hypocrites that Isaiah so rightly prophesied in this passage of Scripture: This people honours me only with lip-service, while their hearts are far from me. The worship they offer me is worthless, the doctrines they teach are only human regulations. You put aside the commandment of God to cling to human traditions.’ He called the people to him again and said, ‘Listen to me, all of you, and understand. Nothing that goes into a man from outside can make him unclean; it is the things that come out of a man that make him unclean. Meditation Observing religious rules and traditions such as in keeping the Sabbath holy was to enable the believer honour God. Also, to serve his neighbour better and not just to fulfill some religious prescription for its own sake. Today we get a glimpse of how the observance of these religious rituals soon became an end in themselves and had no bearing with respect to God and neighbour. Our Lord exposes the hypocrisy of it all and the instrumentalisation of religion for personal benefit. We are invited today to reflect on why we do the things we do. If we do the things we do just to get some personal benefit or recognition, then we are missing the point. All that we do in religion should be geared at getting us closer to God and to one another. Anything other than this is just external show.

He was born in Ireland and became a monk of Iona. He preached the Gospel, founded churches and monasteries, and freed slaves throughout the kingdom. He died at Bamburgh in Northumberland in 651.

Take yourselves for instance, brothers, at the time when you were called: how many of you were wise in the ordinary sense of the word, how many were influential people, or came from noble families? No, it was to shame the wise that God chose what is foolish by human reckoning, and to shame what is strong that he chose what is weak by human reckoning; those whom the world thinks common and contemptible are the ones that God has chosen – those who are nothing at all to show up those who are everything. The human race has nothing to boast about to God, but you, God has made members of Christ Jesus and by God’s doing he has become our wisdom, and our virtue, and our holiness, and our freedom. Meditation
God has given us so many gifts and he expects us to use them in his service and for the service of others. The only time we have is now, the present. Now is the time, to use the words of Jesus in today’s parable, we are either the good and faithful servants or we are the wicked and lazy servants. Our future judgment depends on now, on how we serve now. The talents were not distributed to each servant equally in the parable. Why? Jesus said they were distributed to each according to his ability. Therefore, each servant received just the right number of talents to match his ability. The third servant was wicked and lazy, he did nothing and suffered the consequences. His sins were sins of omission rather than sins of commission. It is up to us to figure how best to use what we have received. If we have buried our talents, now is the time to dig it up so that we can hear the Lord say to us, “Well done, good and faithful servant…come and join in your master’s happiness.”

Saint Margaret Clitherow, née Middleton (1556 – 1586)

John the Baptist is the only saint in the calendar (apart from St Joseph) who has two feasts to himself. One, in August, celebrates his death, and one, in June, celebrates his birth. And this is as it should be, for as Christ himself said, John was the greatest of the sons of men.

First reading : 1 Corinthians 1:17-25
Christ did not send me to baptise, but to preach the Good News, and not to preach that in the terms of philosophy in which the crucifixion of Christ cannot be expressed. The language of the cross may be illogical to those who are not on the way to salvation, but those of us who are on the way see it as God’s power to save. As Scripture says: I shall destroy the wisdom of the wise and bring to nothing all the learning of the learned. Where are the philosophers now? Where are the Scribes? Where are any of our thinkers today? Do you see now how God has shown up the foolishness of human wisdom? If it was God’s wisdom that human wisdom should not know God, it was because God wanted to save those who have faith through the foolishness of the message that we preach. And so, while the Jews demand miracles and the Greeks look for wisdom, here are we preaching a crucified Christ; to the Jews an obstacle that they cannot get over, to the pagans madness, but to those who have been called, whether they are Jews or Greeks, a Christ who is the power and the wisdom of God. For God’s foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, and God’s weakness is stronger than human strength.

Jesus told this parable to his disciples: ‘The kingdom of heaven will be like this: Ten bridesmaids took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish and five were sensible: the foolish ones did take their lamps, but they brought no oil, whereas the sensible ones took flasks of oil as well as their lamps. The bridegroom was late, and they all grew drowsy and fell asleep. But at midnight there was a cry, “The bridegroom is here! Go out and meet him.” At this, all those bridesmaids woke up and trimmed their lamps, and the foolish ones said to the sensible ones, “Give us some of your oil: our lamps are going out.” But they replied, “There may not be enough for us and for you; you had better go to those who sell it and buy some for yourselves.” They had gone off to buy it when the bridegroom arrived. Meditation
The wedding customs required extra vigilance and preparation for everyone involved. It was the custom for the groom to come at his discretion and get his bride and bring her to the wedding party. If he came at night, lamps were required. To show up for a night party without a wedding garment and a lamp is like showing up for a movie that requires a reservation and a ticket. Being unprepared can lead to a lot of unnecessary trouble and even disastrous consequences. What good is a life-jacket left on shore when the boat is sinking? There are certain things you cannot obtain at the last moment. A student will not expect to study only on the examination day. We will not be prepared to meet the Lord, face to face, when he calls us on the Day of Judgment, unless we listen to him today. The Lord invites us to feast at his banquet table. Are you ready? John Wesley was asked what he would do if he knew his Lord would return at that time the next day. He said in effect, “I would go to bed and go to sleep; wake up in the morning, and go on with my work, for I would want Him to find me doing what he had appointed.”
