The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist
Red
John the Baptist is the only saint in the calendar (apart from St Joseph) who has two feasts to himself. One, in August, celebrates his death, and one, in June, celebrates his birth. And this is as it should be, for as Christ himself said, John was the greatest of the sons of men.
Entrance Antiphon : Cf. Ps 118: 46-47
I spoke, O Lord, of your decrees before kings, and was not confounded; I pondered your commands and loved them greatly.
Collect
O God, who willed that Saint John the Baptist should go ahead of your Son both in his birth and in his death, grant that, as he died a Martyr for truth and justice, we too may fight hard for the confession of what you teach. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
First reading: 1 Corinthians 1:1-9

Gospel : Mark 6:17-29
Herod sent to have John arrested, and had him chained up in prison because of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife whom he had married. For John had told Herod, ‘It is against the law for you to have your brother’s wife.’ As for Herodias, she was furious with him and wanted to kill him; but she was not able to, because Herod was afraid of John, knowing him to be a good and holy man, and gave him his protection. When he had heard him speak he was greatly perplexed, and yet he liked to listen to him. An opportunity came on Herod’s birthday when he gave a banquet for the nobles of his court, for his army officers and for the leading figures in Galilee. When the daughter of this same Herodias came in and danced, she delighted Herod and his guests; so the king said to the girl, ‘Ask me anything you like and I will give it you.’ And he swore her an oath, ‘I will give you anything you ask, even half my kingdom.’ She went out and said to her mother, ‘What shall I ask for?’ She replied, ‘The head of John the Baptist.’ The girl hurried straight back to the king and made her request, ‘I want you to give me John the Baptist’s head, here and now, on a dish.’ The king was deeply distressed but, thinking of the oaths he had sworn and of his guests, he was reluctant to break his word to her. So the king at once sent one of the bodyguard with orders to bring John’s head. The man went off and beheaded him in prison; then he brought the head on a dish and gave it to the girl, and the girl gave it to her mother. When John’s disciples heard about this, they came and took his body and laid it in a tomb.
Prayer over the Offerings
Through these offerings which we bring you, O Lord, grant that we may make straight your paths, as taught by that voice crying in the desert, Saint John the Baptist, who powerfully sealed his teaching by the shedding of his blood. Through Christ our Lord.

John answered and said: He must increase; but I must decrease.
Prayer after Communion
Grant, O Lord, as we celebrate the heavenly birth of Saint John the Baptist, that we may revere, for what it signifies, the saving Sacrament we have received and, even more, may rejoice at its clear effects in us. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
John was full of zeal for the love of God and was totally committed to his mission as a Prophet. Humility and Courage were his keys. John was humble as he said I am not worthily to untie the sandals. “He must increase and I must decrease”. John had the courage to question King Herod for his immoral ways to keeping his brother’s wife. He questioned and he was beheaded. Despite all threats, a Christian must be ready to defend the value of truth. We are called today to free ourselves from our morbid fear of death, which often paralyses us from speaking and acting prophetically.

Saint Augustine of Hippo,
Bishop, Doctor (354 – 430)
White
He was born in Thagaste in Africa of a Berber family. He had a brilliant legal and academic career. At length, through the prayers of his mother, and the teaching of St Ambrose of Milan, he was converted back to Christianity. He wrote an enormous number of works. He was declared a Doctor of the Church by Pope Boniface VIII in 1308.

In the midst of the Church he opened his mouth, and the Lord filled him with the spirit of wisdom and understanding and clothed him in a robe of glory.

Renew in your Church, we pray, O Lord, the spirit with which you endowed your Bishop Saint Augustine that, filled with the same spirit, we may thirst for you, the sole fount of true wisdom, and seek you, the author of heavenly love. Meditation
The Pharisees had perfected the art of double life. They used the power of their office to normalise and institutionalise duplicity of life. People had come to accept that the same individual could represent ‘a righteous personality’ and ‘an evildoing personality’. Unbeknown to them, they had in effect created two persons. The Old Testament judicial process held that “A matter must be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses (Deut 19:15). From their own life of duplicity, each Pharisee was contributing the required number of persons necessary to stand as witness against themselves. Their lifestyle would stand witness against their own actions. Before the Ultimate Judge, there would be no need for further witnesses apart from themselves. How would the Holy Spirit, the advocate defend us when we are the ones bearing witness against ourselves? Duplicity of life is self-accusation. By virtue of different sacraments in the church, we are vested with certain powers. Are we living a double life?

Saint Monica
(331 – 387)

She was born at Thagaste in Africa of a Christian family. She was the mother of St. Augustine of Hippo, who when young was intelligent but weak in morals. With many tears she prayed unceasingly to God for his conversion and her prayers were answered shortly before she died.
Entrance Antiphon: Cf. Prov 31: 30, 28
The woman who fears the Lord will herself be praised. Her children have called her most blessed, her husband has sung her praises.
Collect
O God, who console the sorrowful and who mercifully accepted the motherly tears of Saint Monica for the conversion of her son Augustine, grant us, through the intercession of them both, that we may bitterly regret our sins and find the grace of your pardon. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
First reading : 2 Thessalonians 2:1-3,14-17
To turn, brothers, to the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and how we shall all be gathered round him: please do not get excited too soon or alarmed by any prediction or rumour or any letter claiming to come from us, implying that the Day of the Lord has already arrived. Never let anyone deceive you in this way. It cannot happen until the Great Revolt has taken place and the Rebel, the Lost One, has appeared. Meditation
“Clean the inside of cup and dish first so that the outside may become clean as well.”. The Pharisees were preoccupied with the external observance of religious laws. They were however not as keen about the corresponding inner spiritual values. It is the spirit that flows from wellspring of inner values that gives the external religious observances their relevance. This spirit is linked to the gifts of the Holy Spirit. By delinking their inner values from their external religious actions, the Pharisees had severed their dependence on the prompting of the Spirit. They were thus not followers of the law but took the law unto themselves. They had therefore elevated themselves from interpreters of the law to Authors of the Law. Because they disconnected from the Law of Love, their version of religion was filled with the spirit fear, self-seeking and burdening of people. We are called today to make an inner journey to the source of religious values. We are called to rediscover the full beauty and goodness of our external religious traditions by reconnecting ourselves to God the true source of values.

Blessed Dominic Barberi
(1792 – 1849)

Dominic Barberi was born near Viterbo, Italy, in 1792 and joined the Passionist Order. He worked as a missionary in England. Blessed Dominic was noted for the personal warmth of his approach to non-Catholics and for his zeal in preaching; he drew crowds in spite of his strong Italian accent. Blessed Dominic died at Reading in 1849.

Meditation
Jesus refers to the Scribes and Pharisees as blind guides. The scribes were the writers or copiers of the law. The Pharisees were a sect dedicated to strict observance of the law. There was the general assumption that by virtue of proximity to the law, the Scribes and Pharisees were well informed about the law. Therefore they took it upon themselves to be the custodians and guide to the law. In practice however, there was little congruence between what they taught and how they behaved. By applying separate sets of principles in their teaching and in the behaviour they undermined the authority of the law which they were custodians of. In Evangelii Nuntiandi, Pope Paul VI, says that “Modern man listens more willingly to witnesses than to teachers, and if he does listen to teachers, it is because they are witnesses” If there is crisis of evangelisers, there is an even deeper crisis of witnesses at different levels. How am I accountable for my behavior as an evangelizer? As adults, how do we bear authentic witness before the younger generation?

Many are the trials of the just man but from them all the Lord will rescue him. He will keep guard over all his bones, not one of his bones shall be broken.
Evil brings death to the wicked; those who hate the good are doomed. The Lord ransoms the souls of his servants. Those who hide in him shall not be condemned.
Second reading: Ephesians 5:21-32
Give way to one another in obedience to Christ. Wives should regard their husbands as they regard the Lord, since as Christ is head of the Church and saves the whole body, so is a husband the head of his wife; and as the Church submits to Christ, so should wives to their husbands, in everything. Husbands should love their wives just as Christ loved the Church and sacrificed himself for her to make her holy. He made her clean by washing her in water with a form of words, so that when he took her to himself she would be glorious, with no speck or wrinkle or anything like that, but holy and faultless. In the same way, husbands must love their wives as they love their own bodies; for a man to love his wife is for him to love himself. A man never hates his own body, but he feeds it and looks after it; and that is the way Christ treats the Church, because it is his body – and we are its living parts. For this reason, a man must leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two will become one body. This mystery has many implications; but I am saying it applies to Christ and the Church.

After hearing his doctrine many of the followers of Jesus said, ‘This is intolerable language. How could anyone accept it?’ Jesus was aware that his followers were complaining about it and said, ‘Does this upset you? What if you should see the Son of Man ascend to where he was before? ‘It is the spirit that gives life, the flesh has nothing to offer. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and they are life. ‘But there are some of you who do not believe.’ For Jesus knew from the outset those who did not believe, and who it was that would betray him. He went on, ‘This is why I told you that no one could come to me unless the Father allows him.’ After this, many of his disciples left him and stopped going with him. Then Jesus said to the Twelve, ‘What about you, do you want to go away too?’ Simon Peter answered, ‘Lord, who shall we go to? You have the message of eternal life, and we believe; we know that you are the Holy One of God.’

Meditation
Christ’s question to his apostles also teaches us the strength needed in the teachings of the Church. We should not relax the truth of our teachings just because some people have left or failed to understand the truth of the teachings. God’s word should stand forever. It is a warning to avoid increasing faith by seeking to increase the number of followers without looking at the level of faith in the group. This way will be likened to the groups of religious fanatics who only look at increasing the number of believers regardless of the well-being of the basic religious goals, namely spiritual development and maintaining peace, truth, justice and compassion. Today, in a way, we see the interference of religious foundations with worldly things. The people of this world want the foundations of faith to be like a flag that follows the wind of the world’s movement. Pray for the Church to remain faithful in listening to the voice of the Holy Spirit and being guided by it.

Saint Bartholomew, Apostle Feast

He was born at Cana and brought by the Apostle Philip to meet Jesus. Nothing further is known for certain. Eusebius speaks of him in India, but the Roman Martyrology has him martyred in Armenia, skinned alive according to the Persian custom. He is a patron saint of the sick.

Proclaim the salvation of God day by day; tell among the nations his glory.

Strengthen in us, O Lord, the faith, by which the blessed Apostle Bartholomew clung wholeheartedly to your Son, and grant that through the help of his prayers, your Church may become for all the nations, the sacrament of salvation. First reading : Apocalypse 21:9-14
The angel came to speak to me, and said, ‘Come here and I will show you the bride that the Lamb has married.’ In the spirit, he took me to the top of an enormous high mountain and showed me Jerusalem, the holy city, coming down from God out of heaven. It had all the radiant glory of God and glittered like some precious jewel of crystal-clear diamond. The walls of it were of a great height, and had twelve gates; at each of the twelve gates there was an angel, and over the gates were written the names of the twelve tribes of Israel; on the east there were three gates, on the north three gates, on the south three gates, and on the west three gates. The city walls stood on twelve foundation stones, each one of which bore the name of one of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.

Philip found Nathanael and said to him, ‘We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, the one about whom the prophets wrote: he is Jesus son of Joseph, from Nazareth.’ ‘From Nazareth?’ said Nathanael ‘Can anything good come from that place?’ ‘Come and see’ replied Philip. When Jesus saw Nathanael coming he said of him, ‘There is an Israelite who deserves the name, incapable of deceit.’ ‘How do you know me?’ said Nathanael ‘Before Philip came to call you,’ said Jesus ‘I saw you under the fig tree.’ Nathanael answered, ‘Rabbi, you are the Son of God, you are the King of Israel.’ Jesus replied, ‘You believe that just because I said: I saw you under the fig tree. so You will see greater things than that.’ And then he added ‘I tell you most solemnly, you will see heaven laid open and, above the Son of Man, the angels of God ascending and descending.’

As we celebrate anew the feast day of Saint Bartholomew, O Lord, we pray that we may obtain your help through the intercession of the Apostle, in whose honour we bring you this sacrifice of praise. Through Christ our Lord.

As we celebrate the feast day of the blessed Apostle Bartholomew, we have received the pledge of eternal salvation, O Lord, and we pray that it may be of help to us, both now and for the life to come. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
Today the church celebrates the Feast of Saint Bartholomew the Apostle. His vocational journey is unique because he had explicitly stated that messiah could not have had any association with Nazareth. Although he was wrong, he was honest. This is why Jesus called him the true child of Israel in whom there is no duplicity. At the background of the true Israel, is the story of Jacob (Gen 32: 28). Jacob’s life was characterised by duplicity until his encounter with God at Paniel where his name was changed to Israel. In the person of Saint Bartholomew the Apostle, we see how honesty plays a key role in the discovery and development of one’s vocation. While he was wrong about Jesus, he was honest about himself. From a foundation of honesty, Jesus reveals to him His identity as the Messiah. His encounter with Jesus helps him to make a vocational leap from denying the messiah’s origin to becoming His follower. How honest are we in our vocational discernment. How does our encounter with Jesus illumine our deficiencies to opens us up for growth?
