Saint Rose of Lima, Virgin

(1586 – 1617)

Green/White

She was born in Lima, in Peru. She lived a life of selflessness and devotion from an early age. She refused to marry, and became a Dominican tertiary at the age of 20. Her asceticism and her intense spiritual experiences excited the criticism of her friends and family and the suspicion of the Church authorities.

Turn your eyes, O God, our shield; and look on the face of your anointed one; one day within your courts is better than a thousand elsewhere.

This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second resembles it: You must love your neighbour as yourself. On these two commandments hang the whole Law, and the Prophets also.’

Meditation

The Pharisees and Sadducees were seeking to create a polemic situation. They asked Jesus to categorise the commandments in terms of hierarchy of importance. They thought that by opting to elevate one commandment over the others, Jesus will devalue one set of commandments thereby falling into the trap of trivialising the entire Decalogue. Jesus does not opt for a hierarchical framing of commandments. He establishes the foundational pillar of the commandments. He integrates Shema (Deut 6:4-5), and the Code of Holiness (Lev 19:18) into one foundational pillar. At the core of the covenantal relationship between God and man is love. Yet love tends towards the other. Therefore, Jesus places love for God and love for neighbour as the two hinges upon which all other commandments are anchored. Subsuming these two commandments integrates them into a whole inseparable unit. Jesus transforms a near polemic encounter into a memorable teaching moment by reducing everything to Love. The word of God is not for competition or contestations. It is meant to illumine our paths, and elevate our relationships into higher values.

Saint Pius X, Pope

(1835 – 1914)

White

He was ordained to the priesthood at the age of 23. He was successively bishop of Mantua and of Venice, and was elected Pope, against his wishes, in 1903. He lived in great poverty even when he was Pope, and preached sermons every Sunday. The clamour for his canonization started immediately after his death.

Entrance Antiphon             

The Lord chose him for himself as high priest, and, opening his treasure house, made him rich in all good things.

O God, who to safeguard the Catholic faith and to restore all things in Christ, filled Pope Saint Pius the Tenth with heavenly wisdom and apostolic fortitude, graciously grant

that, following his teaching and example, we may gain an eternal prize. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

Gospel : Matthew 20:1-16

Jesus told this parable to his disciples: ‘The kingdom of heaven is like a landowner going out at daybreak to hire workers for his vineyard. He made an agreement with the workers for one denarius a day, and sent them to his vineyard. Going out at about the third hour he saw others standing idle in the market place and said to them, “You go to my vineyard too and I will give you a fair wage.” So they went. At about the sixth hour and again at about the ninth hour, he went out and did the same. Then at about the eleventh hour he went out and found more men standing round, and he said to them, “Why have you been standing here idle all day?” “Because no one has hired us” they answered. He said to them, “You go into my vineyard too.” In the evening, the owner of the vineyard said to his bailiff, “Call the workers and pay them their wages, starting with the last arrivals and ending with the first.” So those who were hired at about the eleventh hour came forward and received one denarius each. When the first came, they expected to get more, but they too received one denarius each. They took it, but grumbled at the landowner. “The men who came last” they said “have done only one hour, and you have treated them the same as us, though we have done a heavy day’s work in all the heat.” He answered one of them and said, “My friend, I am not being unjust to you; did we not agree on one denarius? Take your earnings and go. I choose to pay the last comer as much as I pay you. Have I no right to do what I like with my own? Why be envious because I am generous?” Thus the last will be first, and the first, last.’

Celebrating the Memorial of Pope Saint Pius, we pray, O Lord our God, that by the power of this heavenly table we may be made constant in the faith and be of one accord in your love. Through Christ our Lord.

Meditation

Today’s gospel presents to us a parable which appears scandalous to many good Christians because the parable offers a clear picture of God who is unfair and unjust too. Reading the parable for the first time would lead us to the conclusion that there is certainly an unfair labour practice.  But the story should be read from a different angle. In this parable, Jesus wants to give an important lesson on the generosity and love of God which are offered as free gifts to all. Generosity means that we rejoice in the success and good fortune of others. The blessings that they receive reveal God’s goodness. And what is envy? “Envy,” somebody said, “is a kind of spiritual sickness that restricts the heart so that it cannot rejoice in the good of others, much less, gives to them. And so therefore, as children of God, we have to be happy because we have a God.

Saint Bernard, Abbot, Doctor

(1090 – 1153)

White

He was born in France. In 1112 he joined the new monastery at Cîteaux. Within three years he had been sent out to found a new monastery at Clairvaux, in Champagne, where he remained abbot for the rest of his life. By the time of his death, the Cistercian Order had grown from one house to 343, of which 68 were daughter houses of Clairvaux itself.

Filled by the Lord with a spirit of understanding, blessed Bernard ministered streams of clear teaching to the people of God.

O God, who made of the Abbot Saint Bernard a man consumed with zeal for your house and a light shining and burning in your Church, grant, through his intercession, that we may be on fire with the same spirit and walk always as children of light. We offer to your majesty, O Lord, the Sacrament of unity and peace, as we celebrate the Memorial of the Abbot Saint Bernard, a man outstanding in word and deed, who strove to bring order and concord to your Church. Through Christ our Lord.

As the Father loves me, so I also love you; remain in my love, says the Lord.

May the food we have received, O Lord, as we honour Saint Bernard, work its effect in us, so that, strengthened by his example and instructed by his teaching, we may be caught up in love of your incarnate Word. Who lives and reigns for ever and ever.

Meditation

No sooner had the young man who was attached to his possessions sadly left, than Jesus dropped the bombshell: “it will be hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven…it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven.” This was hard for the apostles to take; until Christ’s soothing words came. They and all those who have left everything to follow Him have been promised a future. It is a future filled with unparalleled joy, it is life in abundance. Amidst the striving to eke out a worthy living, our greatest quest remains the determination to achieve salvation. “Who will be saved?” becomes the greatest of interrogatives of human life. To accomplish God’s plan of life, detachment from the detainments of materialism and creatures that lure us out of our relationship with God must be of uttermost.

Saint John Eudes, Priest

(1601 – 1680)

He was born and died in Normandy. He was ordained priest and spent many years preaching parish missions. He organized a congregation of nuns that grew into the Sisters of Our Lady of Charity, dedicated to the care of women rescued from a disorderly life, and a congregation of priests dedicated to the running of seminaries.

Meditation

It is the will of God that all men come to know the truth and eventually be saved. Jesus Christ is the Truth which we must embrace in order to enter into eternal life. Eternal life presupposes putting God first before every other thing. The person’s heart must be wholly fixed on God. The tragedy of the young man in the Gospel is that his heart does not belong totally to God; it also belongs to his possessions. In fact, his heart’s desire to go completely to God is blocked by his possessions. Hence, he left in sadness. This is equally the lot of anyone who has set his hearts on his riches and not on God.

Come, children, and hear me that I may teach you the fear of the Lord. Who is he who longs for life  and many days, to enjoy his prosperity?

Then keep your tongue from evil  and your lips from speaking deceit. Turn aside from evil and do good;  seek and strive after peace.

Second reading: Ephesians 5:15-20

Be very careful about the sort of lives you lead, like intelligent and not like senseless people. This may be a wicked age, but you redeem it. And do not be thoughtless but recognise what is the will of the Lord. Do not drug yourselves with wine, this is simply dissipation; be filled with the Spirit. Sing the words and tunes of the psalms and hymns when you are together, and go on singing and chanting to the Lord in your hearts, so that always and everywhere you are giving thanks to God who is our Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Meditation

Food is very essential in the lives of every human being. It gives the necessary nutrients which sustains the body. As man needs food for the body, so also does he need food for the soul. We continue with the teaching of Jesus on the bread of life today. This bread of life, the Eucharist, is the food for the soul. Receiving it is reception of the whole person of Christ who gives life. As we receive the Eucharist, we get graces from the person of Christ. The Holy Eucharist makes us alive in Christ. This is a mystery of faith. We have to strengthen our faith to get its fruits. Participation in the Holy Eucharist should show fruit in the lives of Christians. So, when we see that the human race is facing various disasters while there are those who share Christ in the Holy Eucharist that is a problem. We should live the Eucharist that unites us with Christ to obtain new and eternal life. This is the way to make the presence of God continue to exist among us. We can only live good lives if we allow Christ to dwell in us, and his wisdom would guide us in doing what is right, what is just, what is good and what is loving in a wicked world.

Saint Clare of Montefalco

(1268 – 1308)

Green/White

Also called Saint Clare of the Cross, was an Augustinian nun and abbess. Before becoming a nun, St. Clare was a member of the Third Order of St. Francis (Secular).She was canonized by Pope Leo XIII on December 8, 1881.

Entrance Antiphon : Cf. Ps 73: 20, 19, 22, 23

Look to your covenant, O Lord, and forget not the life of your poor ones for ever. Arise, O God, and defend your cause, and forget not the cries of those who seek you.

Almighty ever-living God, whom, taught by the Holy Spirit, we dare to call our Father; bring, we pray, to perfection in our hearts, the spirit of adoption as your sons and daughters, that we may merit to enter into the inheritance which you have promised. The word of the Lord was addressed to me as follows: ‘Why do you keep repeating this proverb in the land of Israel: “The fathers have eaten unripe grapes; and the children’s teeth are set on edge”? ‘As I live – it is the Lord who speaks – there will no longer be any reason to repeat this proverb in Israel. See now: all life belongs to me; the father’s life and the son’s life, both alike belong to me. The man who has sinned, he is the one who shall die. ‘The upright man is law-abiding and honest; he does not eat on the mountains or raise his eyes to the idols of the House of Israel, does not seduce his neighbour’s wife or sleep with a woman during her periods. He oppresses no one, returns pledges, never steals, gives his own bread to the hungry, his clothes to the naked. He never charges usury on loans, takes no interest, abstains from evil, gives honest judgement between man and man, keeps my laws and sincerely respects my observances–such a man is truly upright. It is the Lord who speaks. ‘But if anyone has a son prone to violence and bloodshed, then this son shall certainly not live; having committed all these appalling crimes he will have to die, and his blood be on his own head. House of Israel, in future I mean to judge each of you by what he does – it is the Lord who speaks. Repent, renounce all your sins, avoid all occasions of sin! Shake off all the sins you have committed against me, and make yourselves a new heart and a new spirit! Why are you so anxious to die, House of Israel? I take no pleasure in the death of anyone–it is the Lord who speaks. Repent and live!’

People brought little children to Jesus, for him to lay his hands on them and say a prayer. The disciples turned them away, but Jesus said, ‘Let the little children alone, and do not stop them coming to me; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of heaven belongs.’ Then he laid his hands on them and went on his way.

Be pleased, O Lord, to accept the offerings of your Church, for in your mercy, you have given them to be offered and by your power you transform them into the mystery of our salvation. Through Christ our Lord.

Meditation

In Mark’s account of this short story (10.13–16), the essential part is when Jesus says that his followers must become like little children. Matthew has already said this as part of his talk to the group (18.3), so he doesn’t repeat it. So, the blessing of children is at the heart of Matthew’s version, which is the exact meaning of «laying on hands.» Matthew also leaves out Jesus’ rebuke of the disciples for turning away the children, probably out of respect for the leaders of the Church. Jesus gladly receives children and places them at the center of His Mission. He further recognises children as indispensable recipients of God’s Mission. But more importantly, he proclaims childlikeness as a model from which adults should learn from. To what extent are we leading our children to prayerful encounter with Jesus?
