Blessed Emmanuel Ruiz

Green/Red

Martyr with eleven companions in Lebanon. A Spanish Franciscan, Emmanuel and the others were caught up in the rising of the Druses in Lebanon. The Franciscan community, eight in number, and three Maronite laymen were slain by the Islamic rebels. He was beatified in 1926.

Entrance Antiphon : Cf. Ps 47: 10-11

Your merciful love, O God, we have received in the midst of your temple. Your praise, O God, like your name, reaches the ends of the earth; your right hand is filled with saving justice.

Collect

O God, who in the abasement of your Son, have raised up a fallen world, fill your faithful with holy joy, for on those you have rescued from slavery to sin, you bestow eternal gladness. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

First reading : Hosea 10:1-3,7-8,12

Israel was a luxuriant vine yielding plenty of fruit. The more his fruit increased, the more altars he built;  the richer his land became, the richer he made the sacred stones. Their heart is a divided heart; very well, they must pay for it: the Lord is going to break their altars down and destroy their sacred stones. Then they will say, ‘We have no king because we have not feared the Lord.’ But what can a king do for us? Samaria has had her day. Her king is like a straw drifting on the water. The idolatrous high places shall be destroyed – that sin of Israel; thorn and thistle will grow on their altars. Then they will say to the mountains, ‘Cover us!’ and to the hills, ‘Fall on us!’ Sow integrity for yourselves, reap a harvest of kindness, break up your fallow ground: it is time to go seeking the Lord until he comes to rain salvation on you.

Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 104:2-7

R/        Constantly seek the face of the Lord.

O sing to the Lord, sing his praise; tell all his wonderful works! Be proud of his holy name, let the hearts that seek the Lord rejoice.

Consider the Lord and his strength; constantly seek his face. Remember the wonders he has done, his miracles, the judgements he spoke.

O children of Abraham, his servant, O sons of the Jacob he chose. He, the Lord, is our God: his judgements prevail in all the earth.

Gospel Acclamation : James1:18

Alleluia, alleluia! By his own choice the Father made us his children by the message of the truth, so that we should be a sort of first-fruits of all that he created. Alleluia!

Gospel : Matthew 10:1-7

Jesus summoned his twelve disciples, and gave them authority over unclean spirits with power to cast them out and to cure all kinds of diseases and sickness. These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon who is called Peter, and his brother Andrew; James the son of Zebedee, and his brother John; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas, and Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot, the one who was to betray him. These twelve Jesus sent out, instructing them as follows: ‘Do not turn your steps to pagan territory, and do not enter any Samaritan town; go rather to the lost sheep of the House of Israel. And as you go, proclaim that the kingdom of heaven is close at hand.’

Prayer over the Offerings

May this oblation dedicated to your name purify us, O Lord, and day by day bring our conduct closer to the life of heaven. Through Christ our Lord.

Communion Antiphon : Ps 33: 9

Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed the man who seeks refuge in him.

Prayer after Communion

Grant, we pray, O Lord, that, having been replenished by such great gifts, we may gain the prize of salvation and never cease to praise you. Through Christ our Lord.

Meditation Jesus gave his twelve disciples power and authority over unclean spirits to drive them out of the possessed and to heal all kinds of diseases. Who are these apostles? They are certainly not the great ones of this world—- – the well qualified professionals or the best ones of the society. Instead, they are just the ordinary, simple people, most of them even uneducated. But Jesus transforms them all in the course of time; and then they are filled with the wisdom of God, ready to face the challenges of life, daring to face any powers of this world and willing to lay down their life in spreading the Good News of Jesus their Master and Lord. We too are just the same ordinary, simple and sinful people whom the Lord has chosen to continue the same mission as his. Jesus transformed his disciples and empowered them with his own power and authority. He does the same with us too. But do we believe this and are we willing to be transformed and then to spread his kingdom by proclaiming the Good News and healing all infirmities?

Saint Augustine Zhao Rong

and his Companions, Martyrs

Green/Red

First reading : Hosea 8:4-7,11-13

Thus says the Lord: They have set up kings, but not with my consent, and appointed princes, but without my knowledge. Out of their own silver and gold they have made idols, which are doomed to destruction. I spurn your calf, Samaria, my anger blazes against it. (How long will it be before they purge themselves of this, the sons of Israel?) A workman made the thing, this cannot be God! Yes, the calf of Samaria shall go up in flames. They sow the wind, they will reap the whirlwind; their wheat will yield no ear, the ear will yield no flour, or, if it does, foreigners will swallow it. Ephraim has built altar after altar, they have only served him as occasion for sin. Were I to write out the thousand precepts of my Law for him, they would be paid no more attention than those of a stranger. They love sacrificing; right, let them sacrifice! They love meat; right, let them eat it! The Lord takes no pleasure in these. He is now going to remember their iniquity and punish their sins; they will have to go back to Egypt.

Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 113B:3-10

R/        Sons of Israel, trust in the Lord.

Our God, he is in the heavens;  he does whatever he wills. The idols of the heathen are silver and gold, the work of human hands.

They have mouths but they cannot speak; they have eyes but they cannot see; they have ears but they cannot hear; they have nostrils but they cannot smell.

With their hands they cannot feel; with their feet they cannot walk. Their makers will come to be like them and so will all who trust in them.

Sons of Israel, trust in the Lord; he is their help and their shield. Sons of Aaron, trust in the Lord; he is their help and their shield.

Gospel Acclamation : cf.Ep1:17,18

Alleluia, alleluia! May the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ enlighten the eyes of our mind, so that we can see what hope his call holds for us. Alleluia!

Gospel : Matthew 9:32-37

A man was brought to Jesus, a dumb demoniac. And when the devil was cast out, the dumb man spoke and the people were amazed. ‘Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel’ they said. But the Pharisees said, ‘It is through the prince of devils that he casts out devils.’ Jesus made a tour through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the Good News of the kingdom and curing all kinds of diseases and sickness. And when he saw the crowds he felt sorry for them because they were harassed and dejected, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, ‘The harvest is rich but the labourers are few, so ask the Lord of the harvest to send labourers to his harvest.’

Meditation

The mighty works of Jesus brings out two different reactions from the crowd. One group says, “Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel” and they think that Jesus heals the lepers, cure the sick, raise the dead and cast out demons with the power of God.  Another group says, “It is through the prince of devils that he casts out devils.” and does everything in league with Satan. He could not have come from God because he eats with tax collectors and sinners and disregard the purity laws. It is impossible to impress everyone. Confrontations and oppositions can strengthen one’s resolve to be committed to the goal. Sent by the Father Jesus does everything keeping God’s plan before his eyes. Faithfulness never fears challenges and rejections. Move towards the goal without any fear. God is with you.

Saint Kilian (689)

Green

He was born in County Cavan, Ireland. He was a missionary bishop and preached the Gospel in Würzburg and converted the local Duke and much of the population. He was martyred by beheading, possibly at the behest of the Duke’s wife, possibly because she was the widow of the Duke’s brother and Kilian had declared her subsequent marriage to the Duke to be illegal.

Entrance Antiphon : Cf. Ps 47: 10-11

Your merciful love, O God, we have received in the midst of your temple. Your praise, O God, like your name, reaches the ends of the earth; your right hand is filled with saving justice.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

First reading : Hosea 2:16,17-18,21-22

It is the Lord who speaks: I am going to lure her and lead her out into the wilderness and speak to her heart. I am going to give her back her vineyards, and make the Valley of Achor a gateway of hope. There she will respond to me as she did when she was young, as she did when she came out of the land of Egypt. When that day comes – it is the Lord who speaks – she will call me, ‘My husband’, no longer will she call me, ‘My Baal.’  I will betroth you to myself for ever, betroth you with integrity and justice, with tenderness and love; I will betroth you to myself with faithfulness, and you will come to know the Lord.

Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 144:2-9

R/ The Lord is kind and full of compassion.

I will bless you day after day and praise your name for ever. The Lord is great, highly to be praised, his greatness cannot be measured.

Age to age shall proclaim your works, shall declare your mighty deeds, shall speak of your splendour and glory, tell the tale of your wonderful works.

They will speak of your terrible deeds, recount your greatness and might. They will recall your abundant goodness; age to age shall ring out your justice.

The Lord is kind and full of compassion, slow to anger, abounding in love. How good is the Lord to all, compassionate to all his creatures.

Gospel Acclamation : cf.Jn6:63,68

Alleluia, alleluia! Your words are spirit, Lord, and they are life; you have the message of eternal life. Alleluia!

Gospel : Matthew 9:18-26

While Jesus was speaking, up came one of the officials, who bowed low in front of him and said, ‘My daughter has just died, but come and lay your hand on her and her life will be saved.’ Jesus rose and, with his disciples, followed him. Then from behind him came a woman, who had suffered from a haemorrhage for twelve years, and she touched the fringe of his cloak, for she said to herself, ‘If I can only touch his cloak I shall be well again.’ Jesus turned round and saw her; and he said to her, ‘Courage, my daughter, your faith has restored you to health.’ And from that moment the woman was well again. When Jesus reached the official’s house and saw the flute-players, with the crowd making a commotion he said, ‘Get out of here; the little girl is not dead, she is asleep.’ And they laughed at him. But when the people had been turned out he went inside and took the little girl by the hand; and she stood up. And the news spread all round the countryside.

Meditation

he unnamed official and the woman suffering hemorrhages for twelve years exhibit great faith. The official’s daughter has died but he believes that if Jesus comes to his home and lays his hands on her, she will live. The woman suffering hemorrhages too believes that even if she touches the tassel on his cloak she shall be cured. Ritual purity laws prohibited contact with a corpse or a woman who is bleeding but Jesus overcomes the law through healing the woman and resuscitating the dead girl. In both the cases, instead of becoming ritually unclean his divine power transform them. The woman is restored socially and made ritually clean. The girl returns to life and so becomes clean. Faith can move the mountains and do we have enough faith to overcome the barriers that prevent us from helping the marginalized in the society?

Psalter: Week 2

Saint Maelruain

Green

Entrance Antiphon: Cf. Ps 47: 10-11

Your merciful love, O God, we have received in the midst of your temple. Your praise, O God, like your name, reaches the ends of the earth; your right hand is filled with saving justice.

Collect

O God, who in the abasement of your Son have raised up a fallen world, fill your faithful with holy joy, for on those you have rescued from slavery to sin you bestow eternal gladness. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

First reading: Ezekiel 2:2-5

The spirit came into me and made me stand up, and I heard the Lord speaking to me. He said, ‘Son of man, I am sending you to the Israelites, to the rebels who have turned against me. Till now they and their ancestors have been in revolt against me. The sons are defiant and obstinate; I am sending you to them, to say, “The Lord says this.” Whether they listen or not, this set of rebels shall know there is a prophet among them.’

Responsorial Psalm: Psalm

122(123)

R/ Our eyes are on the Lord till he shows us his mercy.

To you have I lifted up my eyes, you who dwell in the heavens; my eyes, like the eyes of slaves  on the hand of their lords.

Like the eyes of a servant  on the hand of her mistress, so our eyes are on the Lord our God till he show us his mercy.

Have mercy on us, Lord, have mercy. We are filled with contempt. Indeed all too full is our soul with the scorn of the rich, with the proud man’s disdain.

Second reading: 2 Corinthians 12:7-10

In view of the extraordinary nature of these revelations, to stop me from getting too proud I was given a thorn in the flesh, an angel of Satan to beat me and stop me from getting too proud! About this thing, I have pleaded with the Lord three times for it to leave me, but he has said, ‘My grace is enough for you: my power is at its best in weakness.’ So I shall be very happy to make my weaknesses my special boast so that the power of Christ may stay over me, and that is why I am quite content with my weaknesses, and with insults, hardships, persecutions, and the agonies I go through for Christ’s sake. For it is when I am weak that I am strong.

Gospel Acclamation: Jn1:14,12

Alleluia, alleluia! The Word was made flesh and lived among us:to all who did accept him he gave power to become children of God. Alleluia!

Gospel: Mark 6:1-6

Jesus went to his home town and his disciples accompanied him. With the coming of the sabbath he began teaching in the synagogue and most of them were astonished when they heard him. They said, ‘Where did the man get all this? What is this wisdom that has been granted him, and these miracles that are worked through him? This is the carpenter, surely, the son of Mary, the brother of James and Joset and Jude and Simon? His sisters, too, are they not here with us?’ And they would not accept him. And Jesus said to them, ‘A prophet is only despised in his own country, among his own relations and in his own house’; and he could work no miracle there, though he cured a few sick people by laying his hands on them. He was amazed at their lack of faith.

Prayer over the Offerings

May this oblation dedicated to your name purify us, O Lord, and day by day bring our conduct closer to the life of heaven. Through Christ our Lord.

Communion Antiphon: Ps 33: 9

Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed the man who seeks refuge in him.

Prayer after Communion

Grant, we pray, O Lord, that, having been replenished by such great gifts, we may gain the prize of salvation and never cease to praise you. Through Christ our Lord.

Meditation

There is a saying: «don’t judge a book by its appearance». These words of wisdom warn us to avoid making decisions based on history, habits or certain customs. Wisely, one should do a thorough investigation and follow-up before making a judgment that something is suitable or not! Either someone is useful or not! One of the mistakes that people often make is making hasty decisions ahead of time. Many people thus fail to receive the state of grace or blessing from those who bring them perhaps by discussing their personality, their nature, their economic ability or the way they received them in the respective society. That’s when you will hear words like this: «where does this one come from»! Who is he to tell us that» etc. Instead of checking the truth and productivity of what is brought to us, we discuss and judge the messenger who brings us the news. Let’s not take for granted the opportunity to be saved by the people around us so as to avoid regrets.

Saturday 06TH  JULY

Saint Maria Goretti

(1890 – 1902)

Green/Red

Maria Goretti was an 11years old girl from a poor peasant family in Italy. She was naturally pious, kind, helpful and beautiful. In 1902 an eighteen-year-old neighbor, Alexander, tried to rape her. When Maria resisted, Alexander stabbed her 14 times. She forgave her murderer on her dead bed and died in the afternoon of 6th July, 1902.

Entrance Antiphon : Ps 46: 2

All peoples, clap your hands. Cry to God with shouts of joy!

Collect

O God, who through the grace of adoption, chose us to be children of light; grant, we pray, that we may not be wrapped in the darkness of error but always be seen to stand in the bright light of truth. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

First reading : Amos 9:11-15

It is the Lord who speaks: ‘That day I will re-erect the tottering hut of David, make good the gaps in it, restore its ruins and rebuild it as it was in the days of old, so that they can conquer the remnant of Edom and all the nations that belonged to me.’ It is the Lord who speaks, and he will carry this out. ‘The days are coming now – it is the Lord who speaks – when harvest will follow directly after ploughing, the treading of grapes soon after sowing, when the mountains will run with new wine and the hills all flow with it. I mean to restore the fortunes of my people Israel; they will rebuild the ruined cities and live in them, plant vineyards and drink their wine, dig gardens and eat their produce. I will plant them in their own country, never to be rooted up again out of the land I have given them, says the Lord, your God.’

Responsorial Psalm: Psalm

84(85): 9,11-14

R/        The Lord speaks peace to his people.

I will hear what the Lord God has to say, a voice that speaks of peace, peace for his people and his friends and those who turn to him in their hearts.

Mercy and faithfulness have met; justice and peace have embraced. Faithfulness shall spring from the earth and justice look down from heaven.

The Lord will make us prosper and our earth shall yield its fruit. Justice shall march before him and peace shall follow his steps.

Gospel Acclamation : Ps118:135

Alleluia, alleluia! Let your face shine on your servant, and teach me your decrees. Alleluia!

Gospel : Matthew 9:14-17

John’s disciples came to him and said, ‘Why is it that we and the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not?’ Jesus replied, ‘Surely the bridegroom’s attendants would never think of mourning as long as the bridegroom is still with them? But the time will come for the bridegroom to be taken away from them, and then they will fast. No one puts a piece of unshrunken cloth on to an old cloak, because the patch pulls away from the cloak and the tear gets worse. Nor do people put new wine into old wineskins; if they do, the skins burst, the wine runs out, and the skins are lost. No; they put new wine into fresh skins and both are preserved.’

Prayer over the Offerings

O God, who graciously accomplish the effects of your mysteries, grant, we pray, that the deeds by which we serve you may be worthy of these sacred gifts. Through Christ our Lord.

Communion Antiphon : Cf. Ps 102: 1

Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all within me, his holy name.

Prayer after Communion

May this divine sacrifice we have offered and received fill us with life, O Lord, we pray, so that, bound to you in lasting charity, we may bear fruit that lasts for ever. Through Christ our Lord.

Meditation

Fasting is one of the most powerful spiritual disciplines. Through fasting and prayer, the Holy Spirit can transform our life. It is one of the many acts of penance by which one pays for the debts of one’s own sins and for those of others and enters into a closer relationship with God. Pharisees had lost sense of it and merely kept it as a show unto men, whereas the disciples of John sincerely followed it as a preparation to welcome the Redeemer. Jesus’ disciples were not following it because they were with the Redeemer who was compassionate and merciful and who was the one who could purify them of all their sins and make them one with him; hence they were clean. Therefore, they were as thou at a wedding feast and being with the Bridegroom, they could not think of fasting. What kind of relationship is ours with Jesus?

Friday 05TH  JULY

Saint Antony Mary Zaccaria

(1502 – 1539)

Green/White

He was born in Cremona in Lombardy and started by studying medicine, but soon decided to become a priest instead and was ordained in 1528. He founded a religious Congregation, the Barnabites, whose aim was the reform of the clergy and laity.

First reading : Amos 8:4-6,9-12

Listen to this, you who trample on the needy and try to suppress the poor people of the country, you who say, ‘When will New Moon be over so that we can sell our corn, and sabbath, so that we can market our wheat? Then by lowering the bushel, raising the shekel, by swindling and tampering with the scales, we can buy up the poor for money, and the needy for a pair of sandals, and get a price even for the sweepings of the wheat.’ That day – it is the Lord who speaks – I will make the sun go down at noon, and darken the earth in broad daylight. I am going to turn your feasts into funerals, all your singing into lamentation; I will have your loins all in sackcloth, your heads all shaved. I will make it a mourning like the mourning for an only son, as long as it lasts it will be like a day of bitterness. See what days are coming – it is the Lord who speaks – days when I will bring famine on the country, a famine not of bread, a drought not of water, but of hearing the word of the Lord. They will stagger from sea to sea, wander from north to east, seeking the word of the Lord and failing to find it.

Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 118:2,10,20,30,40,131

R/        Man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.

They are happy who do his will, seeking him with all their hearts, I have sought you with all my heart; let me not stray from your commands.

My soul is ever consumed as I long for your decrees. I have chosen the way of truth with your decrees before me.

See, I long for your precepts; then in your justice, give me life. I open my mouth and I sigh as I yearn for your commands.

Gospel Acclamation : Ps24:4,5

Alleluia, alleluia! Teach me your paths, my God, make me walk in your truth. Alleluia!

Gospel : Matthew 9:9-13

As Jesus was walking on he saw a man named Matthew sitting by the customs house, and he said to him, ‘Follow me.’ And he got up and followed him. While he was at dinner in the house it happened that a number of tax collectors and sinners came to sit at the table with Jesus and his disciples. When the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, ‘Why does your master eat with tax collectors and sinners?’ When he heard this he replied, ‘It is not the healthy who need the doctor, but the sick. Go and learn the meaning of the words: What I want is mercy, not sacrifice. And indeed I did not come to call the virtuous, but sinners.’

Meditation

The call of Matthew and Jesus’ dining at Matthew’s house with many other tax collectors and sinners reveal an important dimension of Jesus’ ministry. The tax collectors were considered as sinners and anti-nationals. Their proximity to the foreign rulers made them outsiders and sinners. Jesus identifies himself with them and invites them to be part of his Kingdom. The quote from Hosea 6:6, “What I want  is mercy, not sacrifice” is a challenge to the opponents of Jesus who try to please God through external practices such as sacrifices but fail to practice mercy towards others.  Jesus emphatically says that his mission is not to call the righteous but sinners. He has come to reconcile sinners with God. External practices become meaningful only when they are coupled with charitable and merciful actions.
