Blessed Catherine of
Saint Augustine
(1632 – 1668)
White
She was born in 1632 in France. She entered the Augustinian Hospitaller Sisters of the Mercy of Jesus in 1644. She spent her life ministering to the poor and sick in Quebec, and died there at the age of 36.

Grant, we pray, O Lord, that, as we celebrate in mystery the solemnities of your Son’s Resurrection, so, too, we may be worthy to rejoice at his coming with all the Saints. First reading : Acts 17:15,22-18:1
Paul’s escort took him as far as Athens, and went back with instructions for Silas and Timothy to rejoin Paul as soon as they could. So Paul stood before the whole Council of the Areopagus and made this speech: ‘Men of Athens, I have seen for myself how extremely scrupulous you are in all religious matters, because I noticed, as I strolled round admiring your sacred monuments, that you had an altar inscribed: To An Unknown God. Well, the God whom I proclaim is in fact the one whom you already worship without knowing it. ‘Since the God who made the world and everything in it is himself Lord of heaven and earth, he does not make his home in shrines made by human hands. Nor is he dependent on anything that human hands can do for him, since he can never be in need of anything; on the contrary, it is he who gives everything – including life and breath – to everyone. From one single stock he not only created the whole human race so that they could occupy the entire earth, but he decreed how long each nation should flourish and what the boundaries of its territory should be. And he did this so that all nations might seek the deity and, by feeling their way towards him, succeed in finding him. Yet in fact he is not far from any of us, since it is in him that we live, and move, and exist, as indeed some of your own writers have said: “We are all his children.” ‘Since we are the children of God, we have no excuse for thinking that the deity looks like anything in gold, silver or stone that has been carved and designed by a man. ‘God overlooked that sort of thing when men were ignorant, but now he is telling everyone everywhere that they must repent, because he has fixed a day when the whole world will be judged, and judged in righteousness, and he has appointed a man to be the judge. And God has publicly proved this by raising this man from the dead.’ At this mention of rising from the dead, some of them burst out laughing; others said, ‘We would like to hear you talk about this again.’ After that Paul left them, but there were some who attached themselves to him and became believers, among them Dionysius the Areopagite and a woman called Damaris, and others besides. After this, Paul left Athens and went to Corinth.

Graciously be present to your people, we pray, O Lord, and lead those you have imbued with heavenly mysteries to pass from former ways to newness of life. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
At his departure from the world, Jesus promised a particular type of teacher, the Holy Spirit. He says he still has so many things to teach them but that he will lead them to the complete truth when the Holy Spirit comes. Thus, Jesus kept the Holy Spirit to be our teacher who would lead us to the complete truth. But how do we get access to this teacher, and how do we understand his teaching? Only by prayer and meditation. There is no other way to communicate with this teacher if we do not pray and meditate. If today’s world is so ignorant, people no longer listen to the Spirit. As Christians, we must renew our commitment to listen to the Spirit in prayer. Let us pray for the grace to receive the truth from the Holy Spirit and count on him to guide us always.

He was born in Yorkshire. He was celebrated for his scholarship as well as for his virtues. He was canonized in 1037, and his feast is celebrated annually on 7 May.

First reading : Acts 16:22-34
The crowd joined in and showed their hostility to Paul and Silas, so the magistrates had them stripped and ordered them to be flogged. They were given many lashes and then thrown into prison, and the gaoler was told to keep a close watch on them. So, following his instructions, he threw them into the inner prison and fastened their feet in the stocks. Late that night Paul and Silas were praying and singing God’s praises, while the other prisoners listened. Suddenly there was an earthquake that shook the prison to its foundations. All the doors flew open and the chains fell from all the prisoners. When the gaoler woke and saw the doors wide open he drew his sword and was about to commit suicide, presuming that the prisoners had escaped. But Paul shouted at the top of his voice, ‘Don’t do yourself any harm; we are all here.’ The gaoler called for lights, then rushed in, threw himself trembling at the feet of Paul and Silas, and escorted them out, saying, ‘Sirs, what must I do to be saved?’ They told him, ‘Become a believer in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, and your household too.’ Then they preached the word of the Lord to him and to all his family. Late as it was, he took them to wash their wounds, and was baptised then and there with all his household. Afterwards he took them home and gave them a meal, and the whole family celebrated their conversion to belief in God.

Meditation
Each time people are transferred from one working location to another, some people usually find it very difficult to let go of those who have been very good to them. The disciples found themselves in a similar situation when Jesus was leaving them. They were very sad at heart. But very often, we don’t notice that very often we have to let go of the present people to receive the new grace that God wants to give us through the new people. Every parting is a difficult moment. Jesus reassures that his going away is for a better step ahead. Jesus will send the advocate. From now on, it is a movement that the Holy Spirit directs. He is at the head of this church, taking it ahead. Jesus tells the Apostles that it is for their good that he is going because if he does not go, the advocate will not come. We need to let go of some things before we can receive others. Let us, therefore, learn to let go when the will of God wants particular persons and things to leave us.

First reading: Acts 10:25-26,34-35,44-48
As Peter reached the house Cornelius went out to meet him, knelt at his feet and prostrated himself. But Peter helped him up. ‘Stand up,’ he said ‘I am only a man after all!’ Then Peter addressed them: ‘The truth I have now come to realise’ he said ‘is that God does not have favourites, but that anybody of any nationality who fears God and does what is right is acceptable to him.’ While Peter was still speaking the Holy Spirit came down on all the listeners. Jewish believers who had accompanied Peter were all astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit should be poured out on the pagans too, since they could hear them speaking strange languages and proclaiming the greatness of God. Peter himself then said, ‘Could anyone refuse the water of baptism to these people, now they have received the Holy Spirit just as much as we have?’ He then gave orders for them to be baptised in the name of Jesus Christ. Afterwards they begged him to stay on for some days.

Second reading: 1 John 4:7-10

God’s love for us was revealed when God sent into the world his only Son so that we could have life through him; this is the love I mean: not our love for God, but God’s love for us when he sent his Son to be the sacrifice that takes our sins away.

Almighty ever-living God, who restore us to eternal life in the Resurrection of Christ,
increase in us, we pray, the fruits of this paschal Sacrament and pour into our hearts the strength of this saving food. Through Christ our Lord.
Mediation
In reality, man wants to be in a state of happiness all the time, but what is true and lasting happiness for him? True happiness is found in Christ. Our mother the Virgin Mary, told St. Bernadette Soubirous that she promises her happiness not in the life of this world but in the life to come. Christ tells us in today’s Gospel: «If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love; just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. I have told you this, so that my joy may be in you, and your joy may be fulfilled». Thus, two things are made clear as a means to reach perfect happiness, which are, to keep God’s commandments and stay in God’s love. In the conclusion of today’s Gospel, let’s all respond to the call of Christ. He wants us to remain in friendship with Him by listening and living what He teaches us. That situation will make us free and not slaves. This is because by listening to his Word we will understand what he commands us to do and what he does but «the slave does not know what his master is doing». It is a call to enrich yourself with the news of God’s kingdom by listening to the voice of Christ who tells us everything he hears from God the Father who is the source and meaning of our humanity and true happiness.

The English Martyrs

On 4 May 1535, at Tyburn in London, there died three Carthusian monks, the first of many martyrs of the English Reformation. They are remembered for the example they gave of constancy in their faith and courage in the face of persecution.

First reading : Acts 16:1-10
From Cilicia Paul went to Derbe, and then on to Lystra. Here there was a disciple called Timothy, whose mother was a Jewess who had become a believer; but his father was a Greek. The brothers at Lystra and Iconium spoke well of Timothy, and Paul, who wanted to have him as a travelling companion, had him circumcised. This was on account of the Jews in the locality where everyone knew his father was a Greek. As they visited one town after another, they passed on the decisions reached by the apostles and elders in Jerusalem, with instructions to respect them. So the Churches grew strong in the faith, as well as growing daily in numbers. They travelled through Phrygia and the Galatian country, having been told by the Holy Spirit not to preach the word in Asia. When they reached the frontier of Mysia they thought to cross it into Bithynia, but as the Spirit of Jesus would not allow them, they went through Mysia and came down to Troas. One night Paul had a vision: a Macedonian appeared and appealed to him in these words, ‘Come across to Macedonia and help us.’ Once he had seen this vision we lost no time in arranging a passage to Macedonia, convinced that God had called us to bring them the Good News.

Meditation
Being a Christian means following Christ and accepting all he endured on earth. And one of the things he endured was persecution. Being a Christian makes you different from those around you. You think, speak and act differently. You live among people, but you are not like them. You swim against the current. And people will hate you for it. They will laugh at you, criticise you, gossip about you ant tell lies against you. Jesus is honest ; he tells you from the onset that you will not have an easy ride but he will give you the strength to stand firm and to overcome, just as he did. Stay with him and ask his Spirit to guide you as he guided Paul, and you will conquer the world.

Saints Philip and James, Apostles – Feast

Philip was born at Bethsaida and started as a disciple of John the Baptist. After the Baptist’s death he followed Christ. James, a cousin of the Lord, was the son of Alphaeus. He ruled the Church at Jerusalem; wrote an epistle; led an austere life; and converted many Jews to the Faith. He was crowned with martyrdom in the year 62.
Entrance Antiphon
These are the holy men whom the Lord chose in his own perfect love; to them he gave eternal glory, alleluia.
Collect
O God, who gladden us each year with the feast day of the Apostles Philip and James, grant us, through their prayers, a share in the Passion and Resurrection of your Only Begotten Son, so that we may merit to behold you for eternity. Meditation
People want to lead. But the question is: where are they leading others to? To lead, one must know the way. It seems that people want power but forget that power always goes with leading. If the world today is so confused, one of the possible reasons is that leaders themselves do not know the way to go and if those leading do not know the way, how can those following know it. In the Gospel text of today, Jesus proclaims himself as the way. He is the way to happiness which is our ultimate goal. Each and every one of us has an opportunity to lead at one time or another and in one capacity or another, let us make Jesus our only way and those whom we are leading will not regret putting us in those positions. Let us pray for the grace to follow Jesus, the right way.

Saint Athanasius
(295 – 373)

He was born in Alexandria. He fought hard against Arianism all his life, undergoing many sufferings and spending a total of 17 years in exile. He wrote outstanding works to explain and defend orthodoxy.

Let us sing to the Lord, for he has gloriously triumphed. The Lord is my strength and my might; he has become my salvation, alleluia.

O God, by whose grace, though sinners, we are made just and, though pitiable, made blessed, stand, we pray, by your works, stand by your gifts, that those justified by faith may not lack the courage of perseverance. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
First reading : Acts 15:7-21
After the discussion had gone on a long time, Peter stood up and addressed the apostles and the elders. ‘My brothers,’ he said ‘you know perfectly well that in the early days God made his choice among you: the pagans were to learn the Good News from me and so become believers. In fact God, who can read everyone’s heart, showed his approval of them by giving the Holy Spirit to them just as he had to us. God made no distinction between them and us, since he purified their hearts by faith. It would only provoke God’s anger now, surely, if you imposed on the disciples the very burden that neither we nor our ancestors were strong enough to support? Remember, we believe that we are saved in the same way as they are: through the grace of the Lord Jesus.’ This silenced the entire assembly, and they listened to Barnabas and Paul describing the signs and wonders God had worked through them among the pagans. When they had finished it was James who spoke. ‘My brothers,’ he said ‘listen to me. Simeon has described how God first arranged to enlist a people for his name out of the pagans. This is entirely in harmony with the words of the prophets, since the scriptures say: After that I shall return and rebuild the fallen House of David; I shall rebuild it from its ruins and restore it. Then the rest of mankind, all the pagans who are consecrated to my name, will look for the Lord, says the Lord who made this known so long ago. ‘I rule, then, that instead of making things more difficult for pagans who turn to God, we send them a letter telling them merely to abstain from anything polluted by idols, from fornication, from the meat of strangled animals and from blood. For Moses has always had his preachers in every town, and is read aloud in the synagogues every sabbath.’

Meditation
To love Jesus is basically to keep his commandments. The biggest challenge is not about doing this once in a while but remaining permanently in that love. We all probably know that a good person is not someone who does good acts once in a while but someone who does good acts so regularly that his or her life could be described or defined by those good acts. The same applies to loving Jesus. This will not be one who keeps his commandments once in a while but one who is so regular in doing so that that could define his life. It is not easy to do this since some commandments are very challenging to some people. Thus we need the grace of God to remain in his love. Let us then pray for the grace to remain in his love.
