Saint Eusebius of Vercelli
(283 – 371)
Green
He was born in Sardinia around 340 and was made the first bishop of Vercelli in Piedmont. He was a strong supporter of orthodoxy, and in 355 was sent into exile by the Emperor for refusing to sign the condemnation of St Athanasius that had been passed by the Council of Milan.

God is in his holy place, God who unites those who dwell in his house; he himself gives might and strength to his people.

O God, protector of those who hope in you, without whom nothing has firm foundation, nothing is holy, bestow in abundance your mercy upon us and grant that, with you as our ruler and guide, we may use the good things that pass in such a way as to hold fast even now to those that ever endure. First reading: Jeremiah 26:1-9
At the beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim son of Josiah, king of Judah, this word was addressed to Jeremiah by the Lord, ‘The Lord says this: Stand in the court of the Temple of the Lord. To all the people of the towns of Judah who come to worship in the Temple of the Lord you must speak all the words I have commanded you to tell them; do not omit one syllable. Perhaps they will listen and each turn from his evil way: if so, I shall relent and not bring the disaster on them which I intended for their misdeeds. Say to them, “The Lord says this: If you will not listen to me by following my Law which I put before you, by paying attention to the words of my servants the prophets whom I send so persistently to you, without your ever listening to them, I will treat this Temple as I treated Shiloh, and make this city a curse for all the nations of the earth.”’ The priests and prophets and all the people heard Jeremiah say these words in the Temple of the Lord. When Jeremiah had finished saying everything that the Lord had ordered him to say to all the people, the priests and prophets seized hold of him and said, ‘You shall die! Meditation This is the carpenter’s son, surely? Jesus is definitely the carpenter’s son. But there is much more about him than His carpentry ancestry. He is the second person of the Triune God. He is also the Word through whom all creation came into being. God’s ingenuity to constantly re-emerge from the ordinary and familiar often destabilises our long-held perceptions of God’s presence. This explains why both Jesus son of Mary and Jeremiah son of Hilkiah were dismissed by their very own people. The people were so familiar with Jesus’ earthly nativity, his father’s trade and his everyday voice to understand the novelty of his divine nativity and Prophetic voice. Quite often, we are so fixated on familiar narratives and recurring life events to notice the prophetic messages and moments. We therefore continue to silence the moral voices and ignore revelatory messaging from events and people around us. We cannot limit the unlimited God on how, where and through whom he should manifest Himself.

Saint Alphonsus Mary de Liguori,

He was a Neapolitan lawyer who became a priest. He preached in the rural districts around Naples. His bishop asked him to establish an order of missionaries to work in the countryside, and the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (the Redemptorists) was formally established in 1749. Alphonsus lived an exceptionally holy life.

In the midst of the Church he opened his mouth, and the Lord filled him with the spirit of wisdom and understanding and clothed him in a robe of glory.

Meditation
A fishermen’s net is designed to take advantage of fish’s unawareness of the trap. However, God’s net is not designed to trap. It is rather, a gratuitous Divine support system gracefully lowered into the stormy sea of life in order to save us. It is meant to help His children to hold on to in order to reach back to Him. What is not guaranteed is whether we as God’s children can consciously and consistently choose to receive and hold on to His net of Grace. As God’s people, we have been intentionally casted by the Divine Potter into the sea of life. Being divinely casted, we are as well intentionally endowed with the gratuitous gifts of knowledge, discernment and volition. These gifts help us in choosing to hold on to the straps of the values of the Kingdom of God. Yet, we are also free to choose that which is morally bad. The gracious gift of free-choice is not free from the responsibility of being accountable. The choices we make today will reveal the underlying foundation of our value system. May we be able to separate the good from the bad and choose that which is good for our very selves, for others and for God.

Saint Alphonse-Marie de Liguori, Evêque et Docteur de l’Église

D’abord brillant avocat napolitain, Alphonse (1696-1787), devenu prêtre à trente ans, se voue à la prédication parmi les pauvres et fonde la congrégation du Très Saint Rédempteur, destinée à évangéliser les campagnes. Nommé évêque de Sainte-Agathe-des-Goths dans la région de Naples, il doit abandonner la direction de sa congrégation.

Il était en train de travailler sur son tour. Le vase qu’il façonnait de sa main avec l’argile fut manqué. Méditation
L’idée d’un tri final, définitif, entre les méchants et les justes peut nous heurter. Le jugement met en relief le sérieux de notre vie, de ce talent à nous confié que nous pouvons faire fructifier. Qui ne voudrait pas faire de sa vie quelque chose de beau ? Mais aucun vivant n’est juste devant Dieu. C’est par grâce que nous sommes sauvés, c’est un don gratuit de Dieu, comme la vie. Ne faisons pas le tri nous-mêmes, avant l’heure. Dieu est l’unique juge et quelle allégresse nous attend quand chacun recevra de Dieu la louange qui lui revient.

Il est un Basque et un militaire. Si une blessure brise sa carrière de soldat, son tempérament garde la même ardeur. Mais il découvre la prière et, dans la prière, le Seigneur Jésus. De son expérience spirituelle à Manrèse, il sort transformé. Le groupe de ses premiers compagnons prononce ses vœux à Montmartre, en 1534 ; c’est le germe de la Compagnie de Jésus.

Au nom de Jésus, que tout être vivant tombe à genoux, au ciel, sur terre et dans l’abîme, et que toute langue proclame : « Jésus Christ est le Seigneur, » pour la gloire de Dieu le Père.

Méditation
Ce qui doit caractériser les disciples du Christ c’est la joie. La tristesse ne vient pas de Dieu, mais du diable. La découverte du règne de Dieu est comme celle d’une chose qui est pleine de vie et de sens. On peut donc tout sacrifier pour la conquérir. C’est en cela que la vie prend sens. Le règne de Dieu se construit là où le Seigneur nous ouvre une porte pour que la joie inonde notre cœur. Pour avoir une perle, il faut sacrifier la pacotille de notre vie ; pour la maintenir brillante, il faut l’entretenir. Osons entretenir la vie de Dieu en nous.

Saint Ignatius Loyola, Priest

Ignatius was born in Loyola in the Spanish Basque country. Initially a soldier, he was wounded in the battle of Pamplona. With his companions, in 1540, they formed the Society of Jesus. Ignatius wrote the Spiritual Exercises, a systematic step-by-step retreat that can be followed by anyone – and has been followed by many, not all of them Catholics, ever since.

Meditation
The parable of the hidden treasure and the parable of the pearl speak of the same ideas. Firstly, the kingdom proclaimed by Jesus has great value. Only when someone becomes aware of the great value present in the kingdom he/she could give priority to the kingdom. Secondly, there is an urgency to respond to the kingdom’s good news. The persons in the parables make great sacrifices to obtain the hidden treasure and the pearl. They joyfully abandon everything they treasured in the past to obtain the field and the pearl, respectively. The kingdom of heaven completely alters one’s priorities in life. Many disciples who followed Jesus left everything, but now they should prioritize the kingdom above everything else. Are we ready to give up everything and give priority to the kingdom?

Marthe vivait à Béthanie, avec son frère Lazare et sa sœur Marie. Jésus était leur ami, et Marthe l’accueillait avec d’autant plus d’empressement qu’elle reconnaissait en lui le Messie envoyé par Dieu à son peuple. A cette foi de Marthe une dimension manquait cependant. Certes la vraie foi est active, et le croyant doit accomplir la parole de Dieu en servant ses frères avec amour ; mais Dieu attend aussi du croyant qu’il écoute sa Parole pour mieux s’ouvrir à l’amour qu’elle lui révèle.

Adorons Dieu dans sa sainte demeure. Il fait habiter les siens tous ensemble dans sa maison, c’est lui qui donne force et puissance à son peuple.
Prière d’ouverture
Tu protèges, Seigneur, ceux qui comptent sur toi, sans toi rien n’est fort et rien n’est saint. Multiplie pour nous tes gestes de miséricorde afin que, sous ta conduite, en faisant un bon usage des biens qui passent, nous puissions déjà nous attacher à ceux qui demeurent. Par Jésus Christ.

Si je sors dans la campagne, voici les victimes de l’épée; si j’entre dans la ville, voici les souffrants de la faim. Même le prophète, même le prêtre parcourent le pays sans comprendre. As-tu donc rejeté Juda ? Es-tu pris de dégoût pour Sion ? Pourquoi nous frapper sans remède ? Nous attendions la paix, et rien de bon ! le temps du remède, et voici l’épouvante ! Seigneur, nous connaissons notre révolte, la faute de nos pères : oui, nous avons péché contre toi! À cause de ton nom, ne méprise pas, n’humilie pas le trône de ta gloire! Rappelle-toi : ne romps pas ton alliance avec nous ! Parmi les idoles des nations, en est-il qui fassent pleuvoir ? Est-ce le ciel qui nous donnera les pluies ? Méditation
Les bons et les mauvais, les justes et les injustes, ne partageront pas le même sort le jour du jugement. C’est la réponse à la question du mal. Le Christ nous dit qu’en même temps que Dieu met la grâce dans nos cœurs, Satan sème aussi la discorde. Nous devons donc être conscients que nous partageons notre vie avec des personnes attaquées par le mal. Le pire c’est qu’elles ne s’en rendent pas compte. Comment les secouer pour qu’elles se réveillent ? Le mal n’aura pas le dernier mot parole dans la vie des enfants de Dieu : les justes resplendiront comme le soleil dans le royaume de Dieu.

He was born and died in Imola in northern Italy. The name “Chrysologus” means “golden speech”, and was given to Peter because he was such a gifted preacher; unfortunately, most of his writings have perished, and only a collection of short sermons remains.

Meditation
The coexistence of the righteous and wicked is inevitable. It will be the norm of life until the final judgment. The parable encourages patience with the presence of wickedness in the world. One must resist the “temptation of impatience” and wait for God’s time. The wicked often camouflage and appear as the righteous, and it is possible to fail to identify the wicked. Moreover, hastiness in removing the wicked can damage or destroy the righteous. The parable assures the righteous that they will be vindicated and the wicked will face severe judgment. How do we look at the existence of evil in the world? We do believe in God, and so patiently wait for his time. Patience is beneficial and advantageous; Impatience is inimical and ill-disposed.

Marthe vivait à Béthanie, avec son frère Lazare et sa sœur Marie. Jésus était leur ami, et Marthe l’accueillait avec d’autant plus d’empressement qu’elle reconnaissait en lui le Messie envoyé par Dieu à son peuple. A cette foi de Marthe une dimension manquait cependant. Certes la vraie foi est active, et le croyant doit accomplir la parole de Dieu en servant ses frères avec amour ; mais Dieu attend aussi du croyant qu’il écoute sa Parole pour mieux s’ouvrir à l’amour qu’elle lui révèle.

Jésus entra dans un village. Une femme appelée Marthe le reçu dans sa maison.
Prière d’ouverture
Seigneur Dieu, ton Fils rappela à la vie Lazare qui gisait dans le tombeau et il accepta l’hospitalité que Marthe lui offrait dans sa maison ; nous t’en prions, accorde-nous d’être fidèles à servir le Christ en nos frères et de mériter ainsi d’être nourris avec Marie par la méditation de sa parole. Lui qui vit et règne.
1ère lecture : jérémie 13 :1-11
Ainsi m’a parlé le Seigneur : « Va, tu achèteras une ceinture de lin et tu la mettras sur tes reins. Évite de la tremper dans l’eau. » Selon la parole du Seigneur, j’ai acheté une ceinture et je l’ai mise sur mes reins. De nouveau, la parole du Seigneur me fut adressée:
« Avec la ceinture que tu as achetée
et que tu portes sur les reins, lève-toi, va jusqu’à l’Euphrate, et là-bas cache-la dans la fente d’un rocher. »
Je suis donc allé la cacher près de l’Euphrate, comme le Seigneur me l’avait ordonné.Longtemps après, le Seigneur m’a dit : « Lève-toi, va jusqu’à l’Euphrate, et reprends la ceinture que je t’ai ordonné de cacher là-bas.» Je suis donc allé jusqu’à l’Euphrate, j’ai creusé, et j’ai repris la ceinture de l’endroit où je l’avais cachée. Et voici : la ceinture était pourrie, hors d’usage ! Alors la parole du Seigneur me fut adressée : « Ainsi parle le Seigneur : Voilà comment je ferai pourrir l’immense orgueil de Juda et de Jérusalem. Ce peuple mauvais,
qui suit les penchants de son cœur endurci et qui marche à la suite d’autres dieux, pour les servir et se prosterner devant eux, il deviendra pareil à cette ceinture qui est hors d’usage. En effet, de même qu’un homme s’attache une ceinture autour des reins, de même je m’étais attaché toute la maison d’Israël et toute la maison de Juda – oracle du Seigneur, pour qu’elles soient mon peuple, mon renom, ma louange et ma parure. Mais elles n’ont pas écouté ! »

En ce temps-là, chemin faisant, Jésus entra dans un village. Une femme nommée Marthe le reçut. Elle avait une sœur appelée Marie qui, s’étant assise aux pieds du Seigneur, écoutait sa parole. Quant à Marthe, elle était accaparée par les multiples occupations du service. Elle intervint et dit : « Seigneur, cela ne te fait rien que ma sœur m’ait laissé faire seule le service? Dis-lui donc de m’aider. » Le Seigneur lui répondit : « Marthe, Marthe, tu te donnes du souci et tu t’agites pour bien des choses. Une seule est nécessaire. Marie a choisi la meilleure part, elle ne lui sera pas enlevée. »

En proclamant tes merveilles dans tes saints, Seigneur, nous implorons humblement ta majesté pour que, comme leur hommage d’amour t’a été agréable, notre service consciencieux trouve grâce à tes yeux. Par le Christ notre Seigneur.

Que la sainte réception du Corps et du Sang de ton Fils unique, Seigneur, nous détourne des soucis de ce monde déchu, afin que, à l’exemple des saints Marthe, Marie et Lazare, nous puissions grandir dans un amour sincère pour toi sur la terre et nous réjouir de te contempler pour l’éternité au ciel. Par le Christ notre Seigneur.
Méditation Marthe, frustrée par le fait que sa sœur ne l’aide pas à préparer les choses, demande à Jésus de lui dire de se lever et de l’aider. Mais Jésus répond en disant que Marie a choisi la meilleure chose en écoutant ses paroles, et que cela ne lui sera pas enlevé. Parfois, il est important de sortir de notre routine quotidienne et de prendre le temps d’être avec Jésus et d’écouter sa parole. Il y a des moments où nous devons être comme Marie, nous asseoir aux pieds de Jésus et apprendre de lui. Mais il y a aussi des moments où nous devons être comme Marthe, travailler dur pour servir les autres et faire avancer les choses dans notre vie. Nous devons trouver un équilibre entre ces deux aspects de la vie chrétienne, en étant à la fois actifs et réceptifs à la parole de Jésus. Et nous devons nous rappeler que, quel que soit notre choix, Jésus nous aime et nous soutient toujours.

Saints Martha, Mary and Lazarus

Martha was the sister of Mary of Bethany and Lazarus. In the West, her feast day comes a week after that of St Mary Magdalene because of the old and probably erroneous tradition that Mary Magdalene was the same person as Martha’s sister. Modern scholarship having made matters clearer, Martha, Mary and Lazarus have since 2021 been celebrated together on this day, which was formerly assigned to Martha alone.

Jesus entered a village, where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home.

Grant, we pray, almighty God, that the example of your Saints may spur us on to a better life, so that we will celebrate the memory of Saints Martha, Mary and Lazarus may also, without ceasing, immitate their deeds. Meditation
We celebrate today a family of friends and benefactors of Jesus. Lazarus, Martha and Mary can teach us many things in following Jesus. We know little about Lazarus, but his friendship with Jesus is real. Jesus wept at his tomb and brought him alive from the tomb. He became a cause for many to believe in Jesus. Martha is busy with mundane activities but expresses great faith in Jesus. She believed that if Jesus had arrived earlier, her brother would not have died. She is also one of the few persons who confessed Jesus as the Messiah. Mary wished to be a disciple of Jesus. She sat at the feet of Jesus as disciples would do to listen to the teaching of their masters. All three relate themselves to Jesus in different ways. It is possible to be friends of Jesus in different ways. Let us be friends of Jesus.

Qui donna la vie à la femme appelée à la transmettre au Sauveur du monde ? Nous ne savons rien des parents de Marie, pas même leurs noms, sauf ce que nous disent des écrits légendaires qui semblent calqués sur des écrits de l’Ancien Testament. Il est néanmoins légitime de leur rendre un culte qui exprime notre gratitude pour le rôle qu’ils ont joué dans l’histoire du salut.
Antienne d’ouverture : Ps 67, 6-7. 36
Adorons Dieu dans sa sainte demeure. Il fait habiter les siens tous ensemble dans sa maison, c’est lui qui donne force et puissance à son peuple.
Prière d’ouverture
Tu protèges, Seigneur, ceux qui comptent sur toi, sans toi rien n’est fort et rien n’est saint. Multiplie pour nous tes gestes de miséricorde afin que, sous ta conduite, en faisant un bon usage des biens qui passent, nous puissions déjà nous attacher à ceux qui demeurent. Par Jésus Christ.

En ce temps-là, Jésus passa de l’autre côté de la mer de Galilée, le lac de Tibériade. Une grande foule le suivait, parce qu’elle avait vu les signes qu’il accomplissait sur les malades. Jésus gravit la montagne, et là, il était assis avec ses disciples. Or, la Pâque, la fête des Juifs, était proche. Jésus leva les yeux et vit qu’une foule nombreuse venait à lui. Il dit à Philippe : « Où pourrions-nous acheter du pain pour qu’ils aient à manger ? » Il disait cela pour le mettre à l’épreuve, car il savait bien, lui, ce qu’il allait faire. Philippe lui répondit : « Le salaire de deux cents journées ne suffirait pas pour que chacun reçoive un peu de pain.» Un de ses disciples, André, le frère de Simon-Pierre, lui dit : « Il y a là un jeune garçon qui a cinq pains d’orge et deux poissons, mais qu’est-ce que cela pour tant de monde !» Jésus dit: « Faites asseoir les gens. » Il y avait beaucoup d’herbe à cet endroit. Ils s’assirent donc, au nombre d’environ cinq mille hommes. Alors Jésus prit les pains et, après avoir rendu grâce, il les distribua aux convives; il leur donna aussi du poisson, autant qu’ils en voulaient. Quand ils eurent mangé à leur faim, il dit à ses disciples : « Rassemblez les morceaux en surplus, pour que rien ne se perde. » Ils les rassemblèrent, et ils remplirent douze paniers avec les morceaux des cinq pains d’orge, restés en surplus pour ceux qui prenaient cette nourriture. À la vue du signe que Jésus avait accompli, les gens disaient : « C’est vraiment lui le Prophète annoncé, celui qui vient dans le monde. » Mais Jésus savait qu’ils allaient l’enlever pour faire de lui leur roi ; alors de nouveau il se retira dans la montagne, lui seul.

Une foule nombreuse allait à Jésus à cause des signes qu’elle l’avait vu accomplir. Les signes doivent conduire à Jésus, c’est-à-dire à la foi en Dieu. C’est Jésus qui prend l’initiative, c’est lui qui multiplie les pains et les poissons, c’est lui qui demande à ses disciples d’en distribuer à la foule, c’est lui qui leur demande de ramasser les morceaux restants. A la vue des signes, la foule reconnaît en lui le Prophète annoncé ; telle est la profession de foi attendue. Le signe ou miracle doit conduire à la foi, sinon nous restons dans du sensationnel qui cause simplement de l’admiration. Et quand Jésus se rend compte que la foule veut faire de lui leur roi humain, il se retire dans la montagne. La grâce reçue de Dieu doit conduire ceux qui en bénéficient à la profession de foi.
