Saint Frederick
Green
He was Bishop of Utrecht between 816 and 838. Frederick was born around 780 in Friesland and was a grandson of the Frisian King Radboud. He preached at Walcheren and together with St. Odulfus in Stavoren and its surroundings.

Meditation
We have a wonderful God who understands us and comes to lighten our burden in moments of our sorrows and difficulties! He knows we are weak and are often overburdened. That’s why he invites us to come to him: “Come to me … and I will give you rest.” But how often his people forget this and go after other people and things, hoping to get some help. Experience teaches them, however, and us too, that others are of no help. Only Jesus can help us. Even Mr. Gorbachev, one of the former Presidents of Russia, confessed: “Only in Jesus Christ we have solution to our problems.” Yes, only in Jesus and not in any other or in anything else. Whatever may be your burdens—sins or any problems—do not worry; turn to Jesus, trust in him and repent; he is full of mercy and compassion and he will forgive you; he will help you and strengthen you. He is the all-powerful One who loves you unconditionally.

1ère lecture : Is 10, 5-7.13-16
Ainsi parle le Seigneur : Malheureux ! Assour, l’instrument de ma colère, le bâton de mon courroux. Je l’envoie contre une nation impie, je lui donne mission contre un peuple qui excite ma fureur, pour le mettre au pillage et emporter le butin, pour le piétiner comme la boue des chemins. Mais Assour ne l’entend pas ainsi, ce n’est pas du tout ce qu’il pense : ce qu’il veut, c’est détruire, exterminer quantité de nations. Car le roi d’Assour a dit : « C’est par la vigueur de ma main que j’ai agi, et par ma sagesse, car j’ai l’intelligence. J’ai déplacé les frontières des peuples, j’ai pillé leurs réserves; fort entre les forts, j’ai détrôné des puissants. J’ai mis la main sur les richesses des peuples, comme sur un nid. Comme on ramasse des œufs abandonnés, j’ai ramassé toute la terre, et il n’y a pas eu un battement d’aile, pas un bec ouvert, pas un cri.» Mais le ciseau se glorifie-t-il aux dépens de celui qui s’en sert pour tailler? La scie va-t-elle s’enfler d’orgueil aux dépens de celui qui la tient ? Comme si le bâton faisait mouvoir la main qui le brandit, comme si c’était le bois qui brandissait l’homme ! C’est pourquoi le Seigneur Dieu de l’univers fera dépérir les soldats bien nourris du roi d’Assour, et au lieu de sa gloire s’allumera un brasier, le brasier d’un incendie.

R/Le Seigneur ne délaisse pas son peuple.
C’est ton peuple, Seigneur, qu’ils piétinent, et ton domaine qu’ils écrasent; ils massacrent la veuve et l’étranger, ils assassinent l’orphelin.

Méditation
Les scribes et les pharisiens, c’est-à-dire les savants docteurs de la Loi, ont rejeté la parole du Christ. Cela signifie que le mystère du Règne de Dieu n’est pas accessible à leur forme de sagesse. Ce que les grands de ce monde n’ont pas accepté, les petits et les laissées-pour-compte l’ont accueilli. C’est pourquoi le Christ rend grâce à son Père d’avoir ouvert le cœur des gens simples à son mystère d’amour. On ne peut entrer dans le plan de Dieu que si on se reconnaît pauvre, vide, petit, et dans une attitude humble et désespérée, à la recherche de quelqu’un qui soit capable de combler nos vies. Et c’est le Christ qui nous l’a révélé en se faisant petit alors qu’il est Dieu. Le Christ est donc l’unique porte qui donne accès à Dieu.

Saint Kenelm was the son of Kenwulf, who was King of Mercia from 796 to 821. He is remembered by the people of the West Midlands as a faithful follower of Christ in particularly difficult circumstances.

Meditation
In this short passage from the Gospel, Jesus sets before us a few very important truths. First of all, only little ones, that is, the simple, innocent and humble, can receive true wisdom and understanding which come from God. Second, the Father has given to Jesus who is the perfect revelation of God, all the power to preach and to work miracles. And third, no one knows the Father except Jesus, and those to whom Jesus chooses to reveal him. If we know these truths and live according to them, then we are truly blessed.

Notre Dame du Mont Carmel

En ce jour, nous fêtons la Vierge en union avec les Carmes et les Carmélites dont elle est la patronne. Cet ordre, qui se développa en Occident au 13e siècle, tire son nom du Mont Carmel, en Galilée, où des ermites chrétiens vécurent au 12e siècle. Sur ce mont, Elie avait proclamé que le Dieu d’Israël était le seul vrai Dieu. Dans l’adoration de ce Dieu unique, les contemplatifs ont pour modèle l’humble Vierge qui méditait sans cesse le mystère de son Fils, pour communier toujours mieux à son Esprit..

Aussi, je vous le déclare: au jour du Jugement, Tyr et Sidon seront traitées moins sévèrement que vous. Et toi, Capharnaüm, seras-tu donc élevée jusqu’au ciel ? Non, tu descendras jusqu’au séjour des morts !Car, si les miracles qui ont eu lieu chez toi avaient eu lieu à Sodome, cette ville serait encore là aujourd’hui. Aussi, je vous le déclare : au jour du Jugement, le pays de Sodome sera traité moins sévèrement que toi. »

Le Christ nous appelle aujourd’hui à la conversion. Le plus grand miracle de Dieu est qu’il s’est fait l’un de nous afin que nous puissions être un avec Lui. Jésus-Christ continue son œuvre chaque jour dans nos vies. Notre responsabilité est donc plus grande, parce que nous recevons au quotidien grâce après grâce. Qu’en faisons-nous? Le règne de Dieu est toujours présent en nous, car nous portons en nous l’Esprit-Saint. En sommes-nous le reflet ? Tel est le début de notre jugement.

Our Lady of Mount Carmel

Holy Scripture celebrates the beauty of Mount Carmel, where the prophet Elijah defended Israel’s pure faith in the living God. In the 12th century some hermits took up residence on this mountain and eventually set up the Carmelite Order, which is dedicated to living a contemplative life under the patronage of the Holy Mother of God.

Meditation
Jesus denounces three Galilean cities for their refusal to repent. These cities had the privilege of witnessing the words and deeds of the Christ but refused to take his message to heart. There may be exceptions but on the whole they refuse to commit themselves to the new way of life demanded by the Gospel. Jesus follows the ways of the prophets of Israel to announce judgment. Jesus’ comparison of the cities with the cities of Tyre and Sidon that were destroyed because of their corruptive way of life speak of the seriousness of the situation. Privileges always come with great responsibilities. The people in the three cities failed to recognise this truth and reap the consequences. We are a privilege lot. Are we aware of our responsibilities?

He became a Franciscan in 1243 and studied philosophy and theology at the University of Paris. He became a famous teacher and philosopher, part of the extraordinary intellectual flowering of the 13th century. He was a friend and colleague of St Thomas Aquinas.

Meditation
To be a follower of Christ means, first of all, to love him most, above anyone else and anything else. This love has to be shown even in the most trying times or situations when one has to choose between Jesus and one’s most beloved blood relation. Accepting Jesus and his teaching for some may bring division and alienation from their own dear ones. Secondly, one has to take up the cross that the Lord allows in one’s life with faith and love. A true disciple will be able to see Jesus in others and be kind and considerate to all with a generous heart. Are we true followers of Jesus?

Jean Fidanza (1221-1274) prend le nom de Bonaventure quand il entre dans l’ordre franciscain, dont il sera ministre général à trente six-ans et où il jouera un rôle de pacificateur. Pour ce théologien, le verbe de Dieu est l’unique lumière qui donne la vraie science.

Le Seigneur a conclu avec saint Bonaventure, une alliance de paix. Il en a fait un chef qui possède à jamais la dignité du sacerdoce.

Accorde-nous, Dieu tout-puissant, de célébrer dignement la fête de l’Évêque saint Bonaventure ; puisque tu lui as donné de se dévouer, par la parole et par l’exemple, à ceux dont il avait reçu la charge, fais que nous ressentions toujours l’appui de sa prière auprès de toi. Par Jésus Christ.
1ère lecture : Is 1, 10-17
Écoutez la parole du Seigneur, vous qui êtes pareils aux chefs de Sodome! Prêtez l’oreille à l’enseignement de notre Dieu, vous, peuple de Gomorrhe ! Que m’importe le nombre de vos sacrifices? – dit le Seigneur. Les holocaustes de béliers, la graisse des veaux, j’en suis rassasié. En ce temps-là, Jésus disait à ses Apôtres : « Ne pensez pas que je sois venu apporter la paix sur la terre : je ne suis pas venu apporter la paix, mais le glaive. Oui, je suis venu séparer l’homme de son père, la fille de sa mère, la belle-fille de sa belle-mère : on aura pour ennemis les gens de sa propre maison. Celui qui aime son père ou sa mère plus que moi n’est pas digne de moi ; celui qui aime son fils ou sa fille plus que moi n’est pas digne de moi ; celui qui ne prend pas sa croix et ne me suit pas n’est pas digne de moi. Exauce notre prière, Seigneur : permets qu’au jour où nous fêtons saint Bonaventure, ce sacrifice nous apporte le salut, puisque, dans cette immolation, tu as voulu que soient remis les péchés du monde entier. Par Jésus.

Méditation
Le Christ nous annonce que ceux qui le suivent seront combattus parce qu’ils ne connaissent pas Dieu. Ne pas vivre comme tout le monde, voilà la source d’ennuis des disciples du Christ. Le chrétien porte le Christ en lui, c’est lui qu’il doit offrir à ceux vers qui il est envoyé. Nous devons en être conscients. Le chrétien est la présence de Dieu au cœur de l’humanité. En es-tu conscient?

Mercy and faithfulness have met; justice and peace have embraced. Faithfulness shall spring from the earth and justice look down from heaven.
The Lord will make us prosper and our earth shall yield its fruit. Justice shall march before him and peace shall follow his steps.
Second reading: Ephesians 1:3-14
Blessed be God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with all the spiritual blessings of heaven in Christ. Before the world was made, he chose us, chose us in Christ, to be holy and spotless, and to live through love in his presence, determining that we should become his adopted sons, through Jesus Christ for his own kind purposes, to make us praise the glory of his grace, his free gift to us in the Beloved, in whom, through his blood, we gain our freedom, the forgiveness of our sins. Such is the richness of the grace which he has showered on us in all wisdom and insight. Jesus made a tour round the villages, teaching. Then he summoned the Twelve and began to send them out in pairs giving them authority over the unclean spirits. They were to wear sandals but, he added, ‘Do not take a spare tunic.’ And he said to them, ‘If you enter a house anywhere, stay there until you leave the district. And if any place does not welcome you and people refuse to listen to you, as you walk away shake off the dust from under your feet as a sign to them.’ So they set off to preach repentance; and they cast out many devils, and anointed many sick people with oil and cured them.

Look upon the offerings of the Church, O Lord, as she makes her prayer to you, and grant that, when consumed by those who believe, they may bring ever greater holiness. Through Christ our Lord.

Meditation
As disciples of Jesus, there will be times when we shall be put to the test, we shall be persecuted, falsely accused by the powers of evil. What are we to do then? Jesus has the answer: It is enough that the disciple be like his Master. The innocent, all-holy Master had to face the same. Jesus did not get panicked, neither did he destroy his enemies, but rather, forgiving and praying for them, he laid down his life for their salvation as well as for the salvation of the entire human race. And Jesus had the final victory! Do we want to share in his victory?

Prière d’ouverture
Dieu qui montres aux égarés la lumière de ta vérité pour qu’ils puissent reprendre le bon chemin, donne à tous ceux qui se déclarent chrétiens de rejeter ce qui est indigne de ce nom, et de rechercher ce qui lui fait honneur. Par Jésus Christ.
1ère lecture : Am 7, 12-15
En ces jours-là, Amazias, prêtre de Béthel, dit au prophète Amos : « Toi, le voyant, va-t’en d’ici, fuis au pays de Juda ; c’est là-bas que tu pourras gagner ta vie en faisant ton métier de prophète. Mais ici, à Béthel, arrête de prophétiser ; car c’est un sanctuaire royal, un temple du royaume. » Amos répondit à Amazias : « Je n’étais pas prophète ni fils de prophète ; j’étais bouvier, et je soignais les sycomores. R/Fais-nous voir, Seigneur, ton amour, et donne-nous ton salut.
J’écoute : que dira le Seigneur Dieu ? Ce qu’il dit, c’est la paix pour son peuple et ses fidèles. Son salut est proche de ceux qui le craignent, et la gloire habitera notre terre.
Amour et vérité se rencontrent, justice et paix s’embrassent ; la vérité germera de la terre et du ciel se penchera la justice.
Le Seigneur donnera ses bienfaits, et notre terre donnera son fruit. La justice marchera devant lui, et ses pas traceront le chemin.
2ème Lecture : Ep 1, 3-14
Béni soit Dieu, le Père de notre Seigneur Jésus Christ ! Il nous a bénis et comblés des bénédictions de l’Esprit, au ciel, dans le Christ. Il nous a choisis, dans le Christ, avant la fondation du monde, pour que nous soyons saints, immaculés devant lui, dans l’amour. Il nous a prédestinés à être, pour lui, des fils adoptifs par Jésus, le Christ. Ainsi l’a voulu sa bonté, à la louange de gloire de sa grâce, la grâce qu’il nous donne dans le Fils bien-aimé. En lui, par son sang, nous avons la rédemption, le pardon de nos fautes. C’est la richesse de la grâce que Dieu a fait déborder jusqu’à nous en toute sagesse et intelligence. Il nous dévoile ainsi le mystère de sa volonté, selon que sa bonté l’avait prévu dans le Christ : pour mener les temps à leur plénitude, récapituler toutes choses dans le Christ, celles du ciel et celles de la terre. En lui, nous sommes devenus le domaine particulier de Dieu, nous y avons été prédestinés selon le projet de celui qui réalise tout ce qu’il a décidé : il a voulu que nous vivions à la louange de sa gloire, nous qui avons d’avance espéré dans le Christ. En lui, vous aussi, après avoir écouté la parole de vérité, l’Évangile de votre salut, et après y avoir cru, vous avez reçu la marque de l’Esprit Saint. Et l’Esprit promis par Dieu est une première avance sur notre héritage, en vue de la rédemption que nous obtiendrons, à la louange de sa gloire.

Évangile : Mc 6, 7-13
En ce temps-là, Jésus appela les Douze; alors il commença à les envoyer en mission deux par deux. Il leur donnait autorité sur les esprits impurs, et il leur prescrivit de ne rien prendre pour la route, mais seulement un bâton ; pas de pain, pas de sac, pas de pièces de monnaie dans leur ceinture. « Mettez des sandales, ne prenez pas de tunique de rechange. » Il leur disait encore : « Quand vous avez trouvé l’hospitalité dans une maison, restez-y jusqu’à votre départ. Si, dans une localité, on refuse de vous accueillir et de vous écouter, partez et secouez la poussière de vos pieds : ce sera pour eux un témoignage. » Ils partirent, et proclamèrent qu’il fallait se convertir. Ils expulsaient beaucoup de démons, faisaient des onctions d’huile à de nombreux malades, et les guérissait.

Regarde, Seigneur, les dons de ton Église en prière. Accorde à tes fidèles qui vont les recevoir la grâce d’une sainteté plus grande. Par Jésus.

Nourris de ton Eucharistie, nous te supplions, Seigneur. Chaque fois que nous célébrons ce mystère, fais grandir en nous ton œuvre de salut. Par Jésus.
Méditation Le Christ appelle les douze apôtres et les envoie en mission deux par deux. Ils vont précher l’évangile du Christ et non leurs opinions. Etre à deux signifie que la mission dans l’Eglise, celle des chrétiens, est une relation à Dieu et à son frère. C’est cela être cohérent. La communauté, l’Eglise, est dont un canal par lequel la grâce de l’Esprit-Saint nous parvient. Elle nous aide à bien discerner les esprits et nous défend contre leurs attaques. Le don est pour l’Eglise et c’est à elle de nous aider à bien le mettre à son service. La foi ne s’impose pas, on la propose. Pas de triomphalisme, c’est Dieu lui-même qui est à l’œuvre en ses serviteurs.

Henri II (973-1024) fut toujours, avec sa femme Cunégonde, d’une grande charité envers les pauvres. Empereur de Germanie en 1022, il respecta la liberté de l’Église, tout veillant à la réformer et à la pourvoir d’évêques dignes de leur mission. Privé d’héritier en raison de la stérilité de son épouse, il institua le Christ comme légataire de ses biens.

Nous rappelons ton amour, Seigneur, au milieu de ton temple; sur toute la terre ceux qui t’ont rencontré proclament ta louange : tu es toute justice.

1ère lecture : Is 6, 1-8
L’année de la mort du roi Ozias, je vis le Seigneur qui siégeait sur un trône très élevé ; les pans de son manteau remplissaient le Temple. Des séraphins se tenaient au-dessus de lui. Ils avaient chacun six ailes : deux pour se couvrir le visage, deux pour se couvrir les pieds, et deux pour voler. Ils se criaient l’un à l’autre : « Saint ! Saint ! Saint, le Seigneur de l’univers ! Toute la terre est remplie de sa gloire. » Les pivots des portes se mirent à trembler à la voix de celui qui criait, et le Temple se remplissait de fumée. Je dis alors: « Malheur à moi ! je suis perdu, car je suis un homme aux lèvres impures, j’habite au milieu d’un peuple aux lèvres impures : et mes yeux ont vu le Roi, le Seigneur de l’univers ! » L’un des séraphins vola vers moi, tenant un charbon brûlant qu’il avait pris avec des pinces sur l’autel. Il l’approcha de ma bouche et dit : « Ceci a touché tes lèvres, et maintenant ta faute est enlevée, ton péché est pardonné.» J’entendis alors la voix du Seigneur qui disait : « Qui enverrai-je ? qui sera notre messager ? » Et j’ai répondu : « Me voici : envoie-moi ! »

En ce temps-là, Jésus disait à ses Apôtres : « Le disciple n’est pas au-dessus de son maître, ni le serviteur au-dessus de son seigneur. Il suffit que le disciple soit comme son maître, et le serviteur, comme son seigneur. Si les gens ont traité de Béelzéboul le maître de maison, ce sera bien pire pour ceux de sa maison. Ne craignez donc pas ces gens-là ; rien n’est voilé qui ne sera dévoilé, rien n’est caché qui ne sera connu. Ce que je vous dis dans les ténèbres, dites-le en pleine lumière ; ce que vous entendez au creux de l’oreille, proclamez-le sur les toits. Ne craignez pas ceux qui tuent le corps sans pouvoir tuer l’âme ; craignez plutôt celui qui peut faire périr dans la géhenne l’âme aussi bien que le corps. Deux moineaux ne sont-ils pas vendus pour un sou? Or, pas un seul ne tombe à terre sans que votre Père le veuille. Quant à vous, même les cheveux de votre tête sont tous comptés. Soyez donc sans crainte: vous valez bien plus qu’une multitude de moineaux. Quiconque se déclarera pour moi devant les hommes, moi aussi je me déclarerai pour lui devant mon Père qui est aux cieux. Mais celui qui me reniera devant les hommes, moi aussi je le renierai devant mon Père qui est aux cieux. »

Méditation Le disciple du Christ ne doit pas être surpris par l’incompréhension, les difficultés, voire même la persécution. Tel a été le destin du Maître, tel sera celui du disciple. Celui qui se met à la suite du Christ serviteur vivra les attaques frontales, des calomnies contre sa personne. Pourquoi ? Parce que l’Esprit de Dieu habite en lui. Si tout le monde dit du bien de toi, si tout le monde t’aime, si tout le monde fait tes éloges, tu n’es plus du côté de Dieu ; l’esprit du monde a pris possession de toi. Cela est à dissocier des artisans de la haine et de la discorde. Les hommes de ce monde veulent éteindre la lumière de l’Esprit-Saint qui brille en nous. C’est dans la prière, le service et le pardon que nous sommes l’évangile vivant du Christ.
