1ère lecture : 2 R 24, 8-17
Jékonias avait dix-huit ans lorsqu’il devint roi, et il régna trois mois à Jérusalem. Sa mère s’appelait Nehoushta, fille d’Elnatane ; elle était de Jérusalem. Il fit ce qui est mal aux yeux du Seigneur, tout comme avait fait son père. En ce temps-là, les troupes de Nabucodonosor, roi de Babylone, montèrent contre Jérusalem, et la ville fut assiégée. Le roi de Babylone vint en personne attaquer la ville que son armée assiégeait. Alors, Jékonias, roi de Juda, avec sa mère, ses serviteurs, ses officiers et ses dignitaires, se rendit au roi de Babylone, qui les fit prisonniers. C’était en la huitième année du règne de Nabucodonosor. Celui-ci emporta tous les trésors de la maison du Seigneur avec ceux de la maison du roi. Il brisa tous les objets en or que Salomon, roi d’Israël, avait fait faire pour le Temple. Tout cela, le Seigneur l’avait annoncé. Nabucodonosor déporta tout Jérusalem, tous les officiers et tous les vaillants guerriers, soit dix mille hommes, sans compter tous les artisans et forgerons : on ne laissa sur place que la population la plus pauvre. Le roi Jékonias fut déporté à Babylone avec la reine mère, les épouses royales, les dignitaires, l’élite du pays : tous partirent en exil de Jérusalem à Babylone. Tous les soldats, au nombre de sept mille, les artisans et les forgerons au nombre de mille, tous ceux qui pouvaient combattre, furent déportés à Babylone par le roi Nabucodonosor. Celui-ci fit roi, à la place de Jékonias, son oncle Mattanya, dont il changea le nom en celui de Sédécias.

R/ Pour la gloire de ton nom, Seigneur, délivre-nous !
Dieu, les païens ont envahi ton domaine ; ils ont souillé ton temple sacré et mis Jérusalem en ruines.
Ils ont livré les cadavres de tes serviteurs en pâture aux rapaces du ciel et la chair de tes fidèles, aux bêtes de la terre.
Ils ont versé le sang comme l’eau aux alentours de Jérusalem : les morts restaient sans sépulture.
Nous sommes la risée des voisins, la fable et le jouet de l’entourage. Combien de temps, Seigneur, durera ta colère et brûlera le feu de ta jalousie ?
Ne retiens pas contre nous les péchés de nos ancêtres: que nous vienne bientôt ta tendresse, car nous sommes à bout de force !
Aide-nous, Dieu notre Sauveur, pour la gloire de ton nom ! Délivre-nous, efface nos fautes, pour la cause de ton nom !

Évangile : Mt 7, 21-29
En ce temps-là, Jésus disait à ses disciples : « Ce n’est pas en me disant: “Seigneur, Seigneur !” qu’on entrera dans le royaume des Cieux, mais c’est en faisant la volonté de mon Père qui est aux cieux. Ce jour-là, beaucoup me diront: “Seigneur, Seigneur, n’est-ce pas en ton nom que nous avons prophétisé, en ton nom que nous avons expulsé les démons, en ton nom que nous avons fait beaucoup de iracles?” Alors je leur déclarerai : “Je ne vous ai jamais connus. Écartez-vous de moi, vous qui commettez le mal !” Ainsi, celui qui entend les paroles que je dis là et les met en pratique est comparable à un homme prévoyant qui a construit sa maison sur le roc. La pluie est tombée, les torrents ont dévalé, les vents ont soufflé et se sont abattus sur cette maison ; la maison ne s’est pas écroulée, car elle était fondée sur le roc. Et celui qui entend de moi ces paroles sans les mettre en pratique est comparable à un homme insensé qui a construit sa maison sur le sable. La pluie est tombée, les torrents ont dévalé, les vents ont soufflé, ils sont venus battre cette maison ; la maison s’est écroulée, et son écroulement a été complet. » Lorsque Jésus eut terminé ce discours, les foules restèrent frappées de son enseignement, car il les enseignait en homme qui a autorité, et non pas comme leurs scribes.

Accepte, Seigneur, le sacrifice de louange et de pardon, afin que nos cœurs, purifiés par sa puissance, t’offrent un amour qui réponde à ton amour. Par Jésus.

Tous ont les yeux sur toi, Seigneur, ils espèrent, et tu donnes à chacun sa nourriture.
Prière après la communion
Renouvelés par le corps et le sang de ton Fils, nous implorons ta bonté, Seigneur : fais qu’à jamais rachetés, nous possédions dans ton Royaume ce que nous célébrons en chaque Eucharistie. Par Jésus.
Méditation
« L’amour doit se mettre dans les actes plus que dans les paroles. » disait Saint Ignace. Cet enseignement est parallèle à celui que nous offre Jésus dans l’Evangile d’aujourd’hui ; un rappel de l’importance de la vie intérieure. Ce qui compte, c’est notre cœur et non nos paroles. La parole de Dieu est le rocher sur lequel nous devons bâtir. Plus profonde et plus solide est la fondation, plus la maison est sécurisée. Connaître le Seigneur et sa parole nous aide donc à reconnaître la voix de Dieu et être ouvert à sa volonté. C’est cela qui nous permettra de vivre et de parler avec conviction, comme Jésus l’a fait. Puisse le Seigneur être le rocher qui soutient notre foi et nos actions afin que nous soyons à l’abri des vents et inondations de ce monde.

St. Cyril of Alexandria, Bishop and Doctor of the Church was born at Alexandria, Egypt. He was nephew of the patriarch of that city, Theophilus. Cyril wrote treatises that clarified the doctrines of the Trinity and the Incarnation from heretical interpretations.

First reading : 2 Kings 24:8-17
Jehoiachin was eighteen years old when he came to the throne, and he reigned for three months in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Nehushta, daughter of Elnathan, from Jerusalem. He did what is displeasing to the Lord, just as his father had done. At that time the troops of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon marched on Jerusalem, and the city was besieged. Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon himself came to attack the city while his troops were besieging it. Then Jehoiachin king of Judah surrendered to the king of Babylon, he, his mother, his officers, his nobles and his eunuchs, and the king of Babylon took them prisoner. This was in the eighth year of King Nebuchadnezzar. The latter carried off all the treasures of the Temple of the Lord and the treasures of the royal palace, and broke up all the golden furnishings that Solomon king of Israel had made for the sanctuary of the Lord, as the Lord had foretold. He carried off all Jerusalem into exile, all the nobles and all the notables, ten thousand of these were exiled, with all the blacksmiths and metalworkers; only the poorest people in the country were left behind. He deported Jehoiachin to Babylon, as also the king’s mother, his eunuchs and the nobility of the country; he made them all leave Jerusalem for exile in Babylon. All the men of distinction, seven thousand of them, the blacksmiths and metalworkers, one thousand of them, all of them men capable of bearing arms, were led into exile in Babylon by the king of Babylon. The king of Babylon made Mattaniah, Jehoiachin’s uncle, king in succession to him, and changed his name to Zedekiah.

Meditation
It is not just enough to know who Jesus is. In addition to the knowledge is true worship and witnessing. True worship and witnessing come from listening and doing the word of God. Christians must engage in what truly matters, not in a frivolous and hypocritical lifestyle. The most important goal of believers is to know God and gain heaven. We could decide what is good and evil and perhaps be acclaimed as law-abiding citizens. But unless we seek God’s will, Jesus ultimately will say to us: «I have never known you». Let us not be deceived by secular humanism and worldly ideologies that appear promising and enticing and are in complete opposition to the Gospel values. Our conviction must be rooted in Christ; otherwise, the worldly wind will blow us away.

Né non loin de Chambéry, Anthelme préféra la solitude de la prière avec le Christ à la vie mondaine et chasseresse des grands seigneurs. Il reconstruisit la Grande-Chartreuse qu’une avalanche avait détruite et en devint le septième prieur.

En ces jours-là, le grand prêtre Helcias dit au secrétaire Shafane : « J’ai trouvé le livre de la Loi dans la maison du Seigneur. » Et Helcias donna le livre à Shafane. Celui-ci le lut. Puis, le secrétaire Shafane alla chez le roi Josias et lui rendit compte de ce qui s’était passé. Il déclara : « L’argent trouvé dans la Maison, tes serviteurs l’ont versé et remis entre les mains des maîtres d’œuvre, préposés à la maison du Seigneur. » Alors Shafane, le secrétaire, annonça au roi : « Le prêtre Helcias m’a donné un livre. » Et Shafane fit au roi la lecture de ce livre. Après avoir entendu les paroles du livre de la Loi, le roi déchira ses vêtements. Il donna cet ordre au prêtre Helcias, à son secrétaire et à ses serviteurs : « Allez consulter le Seigneur pour moi, pour le peuple et pour tout Juda au sujet des paroles de ce livre qu’on vient de retrouver. La fureur du Seigneur est grande : elle s’est enflammée contre nous parce que nos pères n’ont pas obéi aux paroles de ce livre et n’ont pas pratiqué tout ce qui s’y trouve. » Le roi fit convoquer auprès de lui tous les anciens de Juda et de Jérusalem. Il monta à la maison du Seigneur avec tous les gens de Juda, tous les habitants de Jérusalem, les prêtres et les prophètes, et tout le peuple, du plus petit au plus grand. Il lut devant eux toutes les paroles du livre de l’Alliance retrouvé dans la maison du Seigneur. Debout sur l’estrade, le roi conclut l’Alliance en présence du Seigneur. Il s’engageait à suivre le Seigneur en observant ses commandements, ses édits et ses décrets, de tout son cœur et de toute son âme, accomplissant ainsi les paroles de l’Alliance inscrites dans ce livre. Et tout le peuple s’engagea dans l’Alliance.

C’est ainsi que tout arbre bon donne de beaux fruits, et que l’arbre qui pourrit donne des fruits mauvais. Un arbre bon ne peut pas donner des fruits mauvais, ni un arbre qui pourrit donner de beaux fruits. Tout arbre qui ne donne pas de beaux fruits est coupé et jeté au feu. Donc, c’est à leurs fruits que vous les reconnaîtrez. »

Jésus parle de manière imagée en épousant la réalité de son milieu. Il nous avertit en ce jour de nous méfier des faux prophètes tout en nous indiquant une manière très concrète et pratique pour discerner: nous les reconnaîtrons à leurs fruits. Le monde actuel est flou. Il promet bonheur et bien-être et est rempli de souffrances et de solitude. Nous devons prendre le temps de distinguer les faux prophètes qui donnent de mauvais fruits et des bons prophètes dont le message est véridique et produit de bons fruits. Les paroles de Jésus interpellent donc au sujet d’un jugement à venir: l’arbre stérile sera coupé et jeté au feu. À chacun également, de manière assez pressante, il est demandé d’être cet arbre qui produit de bons fruits au risque d’être coupé et jeté au feu.

Saint Anthelm of Belley

Anthelm was born in 1107 in a castle near Chambery, in Savoy, France. He was a prior of the Carthusian Grand Chartreuse and bishop of Belley. In liturgical art, Anthelm is depicted with a lamp lit by a divine hand. He was remarkable for monastic reforms.

Shaphan the secretary went to the king and reported to him as follows, ‘Your servants’ he said ‘have melted down the silver which was in the Temple and have handed it over to the masters of works attached to the Temple of the Lord.’ Then Shaphan the secretary informed the king, ‘Hilkiah the priest has given me a book’; and Shaphan read it aloud in the king’s presence.
On hearing the contents of the Book of the Law, the king tore his garments, and gave the following order to Hilkiah the priest, Ahikam son of Shaphan, Achbor son of Micaiah, Shaphan the secretary and Asaiah the king’s minister: ‘Go and consult the Lord, on behalf of me and the people, about the contents of this book that has been found. Great indeed must be the anger of the Lord blazing out against us because our ancestors did not obey what this book says by practising everything written in it.’The king then had all the elders of Judah and of Jerusalem summoned to him, and the king went up to the Temple of the Lord with all the men of Judah and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, priests, prophets and all the people, of high or low degree. In their hearing he read out everything that was said in the book of the covenant found in the Temple of the Lord. The king stood beside the pillar, and in the presence of the Lord he made a covenant to follow the Lord and keep his commandments and decrees and laws with all his heart and soul, in order to enforce the terms of the covenant as written in that book. All the people gave their allegiance to the covenant.

Meditation
Goodness begets goodness, while evil begets evil. How can a mango tree grow not like a mango but like an olive? Why do evil under the cover of good? Why occupy space where you are incapable of proficiency just to deny others the opportunity to explore productively? Jesus paved the way for us to know the Father’s love and bear fruits manifesting his presence to the world. Through the faith we profess, we have been configured into Christ, the true vine in whom we are branches. The fruits we bear must reflect God’s very nature and attributes, such as love, peace, joy, humility, truthfulness, gentleness and compassion.

Born in Vercelli Italy, he was brought up as an orphan and became a hermit. He attracted so many followers that a monastery was built. He founded monasteries throughout Naples, and died at the Guglielmo monastery near Nusco Italy

You have learnt by now what the kings of Assyria have done to every country, putting them all under the ban. By the road that he came on he will return; he shall not enter this city. It is the Lord who speaks. I will protect this city and save it for my own sake and for the sake of my servant David.”’ That same night the angel of the Lord went out and struck down a hundred and eighty-five thousand men in the Assyrian camp. Sennacherib struck camp and left; he returned home and stayed in Nineveh.

Meditation
The Gospel text of today puts before us two great gates, the narrow gate and the wide gate. Jesus instructs us today to enter through the narrow gate, for it is the gate that leads to eternal life, while the wide gate leads to perdition. We may have had the experience of how difficult it is for a crowd to pass through a narrow door. That is how it will be hard to enter the kingdom of heaven according to Jesus’ analogy of the narrow gate. The wide gate leading to eternal damnation tells of the ease one can go through. There is no difficulty at all in going through that gate. The adage goes that good things do not come easy. So if we find ourselves on the easy side of life, having everything on a platter of gold, we must ensure that we are not on the road to damnation. Thus it is strange when we hear Christians complaining that life is difficult. Sometimes, the fact that life is difficult could be glaring proof that one is on the right road. Let us pray, therefore, for the grace to persevere in doing good.

En ces jours-là, Sennakérib, roi d’Assour, envoya des messagers dire à Ézékias : « Vous parlerez à Ézékias, roi de Juda, en ces termes: Ne te laisse pas tromper par ton Dieu, en qui tu mets ta confiance, et ne dis pas : “Jérusalem ne sera pas livrée aux mains du roi d’Assour !” Tu sais bien ce que les rois d’Assour ont fait à tous les pays : ils les ont voués à l’anathème. Il est vrai, Seigneur, que les rois d’Assour ont ravagé les nations et leur territoire, et brûlé leurs dieux : en réalité, ce n’étaient pas des dieux, mais un ouvrage de mains d’hommes, fait avec du bois et de la pierre ; c’est pourquoi ils ont pu les faire disparaître. Maintenant, je t’en supplie, Seigneur notre Dieu, sauve-nous de la main de Sennakérib, et tous les royaumes de la terre sauront que tu es, Seigneur, le seul Dieu ! » Alors le prophète Isaïe, fils d’Amots, envoya dire à Ézékias : « Ainsi parle le Seigneur, Dieu d’Israël : J’ai entendu la prière que tu m’as adressée au sujet de Sennakérib, roi d’Assour. Voici la parole que le Seigneur a prononcée contre lui : Elle te méprise, elle te nargue, la vierge, la fille de Sion. Elle hoche la tête pour se moquer de toi, la fille de Jérusalem. Oui, un reste sortira de Jérusalem, et des survivants, de la montagne de Sion. Il fera cela, l’amour jaloux du Seigneur ! Et voici ce que dit le Seigneur au sujet du roi d’Assour : Il n’entrera pas dans cette ville, il ne lui lancera pas une seule flèche, il ne lui opposera pas un seul bouclier, il n’élèvera pas un seul remblai : il retournera par le chemin par lequel il est venu. Non, il n’entrera pas dans cette ville, – oracle du Seigneur. Je protégerai cette ville, je la sauverai à cause de moi-même et à cause de David mon serviteur.» La nuit même, l’ange du Seigneur sortit et frappa 185 000 hommes dans le camp assyrien. Le matin, quand on se leva, ce n’était que des cadavres. Sennakérib, roi d’Assour, plia bagage et s’en alla. Il revint à Ninive et y demeura.

Méditation
“Tout ce que vous voudriez que les autres fassent pour vous, faites-le pour eux, vous aussi». La règle d’or est exigeante à cause de sa simplicité. Il n’est pas question d’un critère juridique, mais d’amour vrai. Dans les versets précédents un peu plus loin, l’auteur Matthieu nous présente Jésus nous invitant à nous aimer les uns les autres comme nous-mêmes. À quel point le monde serait différent si tous suivaient ce commandement de Jésus ? Comment traitons-nous les membres de notre famille, nos amis, nos collègues, les étrangers et les marginalisés ? Aimer autrui comme soi-même c’est le chemin qui conduit à la vie mais en passant par la porte étroite qui consiste à renoncer à soi-même et à porter sa croix chaque jour.

LA NATIVITE DE SAINT JEAN

L’Église ne célèbre pas seulement le martyre de Jean Baptiste, mais aussi sa naissance terrestre. C’est que cet enfant est rempli de l’Esprit de Dieu dès le sein de sa mère et est ainsi rendu capable d’accomplir sa mission sans égale. Sa naissance est donc un jour de joie ; elle est l’aube qui annonce la lumière de Noël, cette Lumière éternelle à laquelle Jean rendra témoignage.
Antienne d’ouverture : Jn 1, 6-7
Il y eut un homme, envoyé par Dieu. Son nom était Jean. Il était venu comme témoin, pour rendre témoignage à la lumière, et préparer au Seigneur un peuple capable de l’accueillir.

Tu as voulu, Seigneur, que saint Jean Baptiste prépare ton peuple a la venue du Messie ; accorde a ton Eglise le don de la joie spirituelle, et guide l’esprit de tous les croyants dans la voie du salut et de la paix. Par Jésus.

En ces jours-là, dans la synagogue d’Antioche de Pisidie, Paul disait aux Juifs : « Dieu a, pour nos pères, suscité David comme roi, et il lui a rendu ce témoignage : J’ai trouvé David, fils de Jessé ; c’est un homme selon mon cœur qui réalisera toutes mes volontés. De la descendance de David, Dieu, selon la promesse, a fait sortir un sauveur pour Israël : c’est Jésus, dont Jean le Baptiste a préparé l’avènement en proclamant avant lui un baptême de conversion pour tout le peuple d’Israël. Au moment d’achever sa course, Jean disait : “Ce que vous pensez que je suis, je ne le suis pas. Mais le voici qui vient après moi, et je ne suis pas digne de retirer les sandales de ses pieds. Quand fut accompli le temps où Élisabeth devait enfanter, elle mit au monde un fils. Ses voisins et sa famille apprirent que le Seigneur lui avait montré la grandeur de sa miséricorde, et ils se réjouissaient avec elle. Le huitième jour, ils vinrent pour la circoncision de l’enfant. Ils voulaient l’appeler Zacharie, du nom de son père. Mais sa mère prit la parole et déclara : « Non, il s’appellera Jean. » On lui dit: « Personne dans ta famille ne porte ce nom-là ! » On demandait par signes au père comment il voulait l’appeler. Il se fit donner une tablette sur laquelle il écrivit : « Jean est son nom. » Et tout le monde en fut étonné. A l’instant même, sa bouche s’ouvrit, sa langue se délia : il parlait et il bénissait Dieu. La crainte saisit alors tous les gens du voisinage et, dans toute la région montagneuse de Judée, on racontait tous ces événements. Tous ceux qui les apprenaient les conservaient dans leur cœur et disaient : « Que sera donc cet enfant ? » En effet, la main du Seigneur était avec lui. L’enfant grandissait et son esprit se fortifiait. Il alla vivre au désert jusqu’au jour où il se fit connaître à Israël.

Méditation
Aujourd’hui, l’Eglise célèbre l’anniversaire de Jean Baptiste qui en hébreu signifie « Dieu est miséricordieux». Dieu a donc montré sa bonté et sa misericorde à Élisabeth et à Zacharie, modèles de foi et de confiance en Dieu, réalisant ainsi leur désir d’avoir un enfant. Il leur avait été révélé qu’ils devaient l’appeler Jean, et ils le firent malgré les critiques et les malentendus de la part de leurs proches et des voisins. Zacharie avait été réduit au silence à cause de ses doutes face au travail de Dieu pour lui donner un fils. Sa femme, Elizabeth, avait immédiatement accepté cette joie tardive dans sa vie. Maintenant, Zacharie sait ce que Dieu fera de cet enfant dans le monde: il annoncera le Messie qui vient, le Sauveur de son peuple.

Having feasted at the banquet of the heavenly Lamb, we pray, O Lord, that, finding joy in the nativity of Saint John the Baptist, your Church may know as the author of her rebirth, the Christ whose coming John foretold. Who lives and reigns for ever and ever.
Meditation
When we hear of John the Baptist, our minds go directly to someone baptising in the River Jordan. However, today’s feast is all about his birthday. We can furthermore reflect on the mystery of vocation — John’s, and eventually ours. The Gospel presents Luke’s description of Elizabeth and Zechariah’s child’s circumcision and naming, who was surprisingly and aptly called John (Greek for the Hebrew Johanan, «God shows mercy»). John’s mere appearance epitomises God’s compassionate intervention in a condition of sterility (biological and societal). It marks the beginning of the fulfilment of Israel’s long-held nourished hope. This is explained in Zechariah’s Nunc Dimittis (vv. 68-79). The Lectionary reserves it for another day, but it does include the passage’s concluding verse: «Meanwhile the child grew up and his spirit matured. And he lived out in the wilderness until the day he appeared openly to Israel.» God continues the development that he started in Elizabeth’s barren womb. When considered together and prayerfully, these remarkable Scripture passages can help us all marvel at how we can recognise the graceful interplay of God’s loving initiatives and the opportunities for a free response that comprise our own emerging stories of vocation, no matter how sterile they may appear at times.

Frères, l’amour du Christ nous saisit quand nous pensons qu’un seul est mort tous, et qu’ainsi tous ont passé par la mort. Car le Christ est mort pour tous, afin que les vivants n’aient plus leur vie centrée sur eux-memes, mais sur lui, qui est mort et ressucité pour eux. Désormais nous ne connaissons plus personne à la manière humaine: si nous avons compris le Christ à la manière humaine, maintenant nous ne le comprenons plus ainsi. Si donc quelqu’un est en Jésus Christ, il est une créature nouvelle. Le monde ancien s’en est allé, un monde nouveau est déjà né.

Quittant la foule, ils emmenèrent Jésus, comme il était, dans la barque, et d’autres barques l’accompagnaient. Survient une violente tempête. Les vagues se jetaient sur la barque, si bien que déjà elle se remplissait. Lui dormait sur le coussin à l’arrière. Les disciples le réveillent et lui disent : « Maître, nous sommes perdus ; cela ne te fait rien ? » Réveillé, il menaça le vent et dit à la mer : « Silence, tais-toi ! » Le vent tomba, et il se fit un grand calme. Jésus leur dit : « Pourquoi êtes-vous si craintifs ? N’avez-vous pas encore la foi ? » Saisis d’une grande crainte, ils se disaient entre eux : « Qui est-il donc, celui-ci, pour que même le vent et la mer lui obéissent ? »

Méditation
Hier, Jésus nous invitait à faire confiance à Dieu. En ce dimanche, il nous rassure de sa présence au milieu de nous, dans les tempêtes de nos vies et est capable par un mot d’apporter un grand calme et la paix. Jésus comprend nos peurs et nous permet de les lui exprimer, comme les disciples qui se sont écriés «Maître, ça ne t’intéresse pas? Nous allons couler!’’. Et au bout d’un moment, il se réveille et calme le vent et la mer; il réprimande les disciples pour leur manque de foi. Comme les disciples, nous manquons de foi quand les tempêtes surviennent dans votre vie oubliant que Dieu est avec nous à tout moment et que jamais il ne nous abandonne. Ayons plutot peur de cheminer sans et loin de Lui. Avec le Seigneur dans la barque de notre vie quotidienne, le mot ‘’crainte’’ est sans signification car rien de mal en sa présence ne peut nous atteindre. Reste avec nous Seigneur et que se realise en nos vies ta volonté.

Grant, O Lord, that we may always revere and love your holy name, for you never deprive of your guidance those you set firm on the foundation of your love. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
First reading: Job 38:1,8-11
From the heart of the tempest the Lord gave Job his answer. He said: Who pent up the sea behind closed doors when it leapt tumultuous out of the womb, when I wrapped it in a robe of mist and made black clouds its swaddling bands; when I marked the bounds it was not to cross and made it fast with a bolted gate? Come thus far, I said, and no farther: here your proud waves shall break.
Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 106(107):23-26,28-32
R/ O give thanks to the Lord, for his love endures for ever.
Some sailed to the sea in ships to trade on the mighty waters. These men have seen the Lord’s deeds, the wonders he does in the deep.
For he spoke; he summoned the gale, tossing the waves of the sea up to heaven and back into the deep; their souls melted away in their distress.
Then they cried to the Lord in their need and he rescued them from their distress. He stilled the storm to a whisper: all the waves of the sea were hushed.
They rejoiced because of the calm and he led them to the haven they desired. Let them thank the Lord for his love, for the wonders he does for men.
Second reading: 2 Corinthians 5:14-17
The love of Christ overwhelms us when we reflect that if one man has died for all, then all men should be dead; and the reason he died for all was so that living men should live no longer for themselves, but for him who died and was raised to life for them. From now onwards, therefore, we do not judge anyone by the standards of the flesh. Even if we did once know Christ in the flesh, that is not how we know him now. And for anyone who is in Christ, there is a new creation; the old creation has gone, and now the new one is here.

Gospel: Mark 4:35-41
With the coming of evening, Jesus said to his disciples, ‘Let us cross over to the other side.’ And leaving the crowd behind they took him, just as he was, in the boat; and there were other boats with him. Then it began to blow a gale and the waves were breaking into the boat so that it was almost swamped. But he was in the stern, his head on the cushion, asleep. They woke him and said to him, ‘Master, do you not care? We are going down!’ And he woke up and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, ‘Quiet now! Be calm!’ And the wind dropped, and all was calm again. Then he said to them, ‘Why are you so frightened? How is it that you have no faith?’ They were filled with awe and said to one another, ‘Who can this be? Even the wind and the sea obey him.’

Receive, O Lord, the sacrifice of conciliation and praise and grant that, cleansed by its action, we may make offering of a heart pleasing to you. Through Christ our Lord.

Prayer after Communion
Renewed and nourished by the Sacred Body and Precious Blood of your Son, we ask of your mercy, O Lord, that what we celebrate with constant devotion may be our sure pledge of redemption. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
Life is full of storms. At times, they can become so strong and strange that our human strength can no longer support us. At such moments, fear and complaints might take over the central stage of our life. Even in some cases, we might lose our faith in God, thinking that he has abandoned us, or that he does not exist. These storms come in different forms. They could be problems in our marriage, our children who are not responding well, lack of a good job, insufficient finance, inability to procreate, or a prolonged sickness that has defiled all treatments. They could also be the inability to find or maintain a fair and stable relationship or fall out with people all the time. They could also be poor results in our academics or business. The list is unending, but these represent the realities we face every day. Brethren, the truth is that there is no assurance that our lives will be utterly free of storms. However, the good news is that there is an assurance that Christ is with us to help us succeed.
