Divine Mercy Sunday

He was born in 1125 and was a French religious who willingly led a life with few comforts. He spent many hours in prayer and became a scholar of religious law. An account written after his death described him as “famous for his life and miracles.” He died in 1203.

Collect
God of everlasting mercy, who in the very recurrence of the paschal feast kindle the faith of the people you have made your own, increase, we pray, the grace you have bestowed, that all may grasp and rightly understand in what font they have been washed, by whose Spirit they have been reborn, by whose Blood they have been redeemed. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
First reading: Acts 4:32-35
The whole group of believers was united, heart and soul; no one claimed for his own use anything that he had, as everything they owned was held in common. The apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus with great power, and they were all given great respect. None of their members was ever in want, as all those who owned land or houses would sell them, and bring the money from them, to present it to the apostles; it was then distributed to any members who might be in need.

R/ Give thanks to the Lord for he is good, for his love has no end.
Let the sons of Israel say: ‘His love has no end.’ Let the sons of Aaron say: ‘His love has no end.’ Let those who fear the Lord say: ‘His love has no end.’

The stone which the builders rejected has become the corner stone. This is the work of the Lord, a marvel in our eyes. This day was made by the Lord; we rejoice and are glad.
Second reading: 1 John 5:1-6
Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ has been begotten by God; and whoever loves the Father that begot him loves the child whom he begets. We can be sure that we love God’s children if we love God himself and do what he has commanded us; this is what loving God is – keeping his commandments; and his commandments are not difficult, because anyone who has been begotten by God has already overcome the world; this is the victory over the world – our faith. Who can overcome the world? Only the man who believes that Jesus is the Son of God: Jesus Christ who came by water and blood, not with water only, but with water and blood; with the Spirit as another witness – since the Spirit is the truth.

Gospel: John 20:19-31
In the evening of that same day, the first day of the week, the doors were closed in the room where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews. Jesus came and stood among them. He said to them, ‘Peace be with you’, and showed them his hands and his side. The disciples were filled with joy when they saw the Lord, and he said to them again, ‘Peace be with you. ‘As the Father sent me, so am I sending you.’ After saying this he breathed on them and said: ‘Receive the Holy Spirit. For those whose sins you forgive, they are forgiven; for those whose sins you retain, they are retained.’
Thomas, called the Twin, who was one of the Twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. When the disciples said, ‘We have seen the Lord’, he answered, ‘Unless I see the holes that the nails made in his hands and can put my finger into the holes they made, and unless I can put my hand into his side, I refuse to believe.’ Eight days later the disciples were in the house again and Thomas was with them. The doors were closed, but Jesus came in and stood among them. ‘Peace be with you’ he said. Then he spoke to Thomas, ‘Put your finger here; look, here are my hands. Give me your hand; put it into my side. Doubt no longer but believe.’ Thomas replied, ‘My Lord and my God!’ Jesus said to him: ‘You believe because you can see me. Happy are those who have not seen and yet believe.’ There were many other signs that Jesus worked and the disciples saw, but they are not recorded in this book. These are recorded so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing this you may have life through his name.
Prayer over the Offerings
Accept, O Lord, we pray, the oblations of your people (and of those you have brought to new birth), that, renewed by confession of your name and by Baptism, they may attain unending happiness. Through Christ our Lord.

Bring your hand and feel the place of the nails, and do not be unbelieving but believing, alleluia.
Prayer after Communion
Grant, we pray, almighty God, that our reception of this paschal Sacrament may have a continuing effect in our minds and hearts. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
Everyone wants peace on Earth. After his resurrection, Jesus’ first gift to his followers was the gift of peace. He sensed their distress and calmed their hearts by blowing peace into them. The early Christians in today’s first reading were described as a community that shared their possessions and practised mutual respect. What the world needs now is for people to live together in peace and harmony, sharing everything from their homes to their ideas to their skills. The problem is that people have determined that Jesus’ teachings do not belong in any agreements for world peace. Because of this, what we want most has eluded us for generations. None of our abilities or resources can bring us contentment like Jesus can. When we are willing to be humble and seek him out, he will give us our hearts’ desires.

Dieu de miséricorde infini, tu ranimes la foi de ton peuple par les célébration pascal ; orgmente en nous ta grace pour que nous comprenions toujours mieux quel bapteme nous as purifier, quelm esprit nous as fait renaitre, et quel sang nous as racheté.
1ère lecture : Actes 4, 32-35
La multitude de ceux qui étaient devnus croyants avait un seul cœur et une seule âme ; et personne ne disait que ses biens lui appartenaient en propmais ils avaient tout en commun. C’est avec une grande puissance que les Apôtres rendaient témoignage de la résurrection du Seigneur Jésus, et une grâce abondante reposait sur eux tous. Aucun d’entre eux n’était dans l’indigence, car tous ceux qui étaient propriétaires de domaines ou de maisons les vendaient, et ils apportaient le montant de la vente pour le déposer aux pieds des Apôtres ; puis on le distribuait en fonction des besoins de chacun..

Oui, que le dise Israël : Éternel est son amour ! Que le dise la maison d’Aaron:
Éternel est son amour ! Qu’ils le disent, ceux qui craignent le Seigneur : Éternel est son amour !
Le bras du Seigneur se lève, le bras du Seigneur est fort ! Non, je ne mourrai pas, je vivrai pour annoncer les actions du Seigneur. Il m’a frappé, le Seigneur, il m’a frappé, mais sans me livrer à la mort.
La pierre qu’ont rejetée les bâtisseurs est devenue la pierre d’angle : c’est là l’œuvre du Seigneur, la merveille devant nos yeux. Voici le jour que fit le Seigneur, qu’il soit pour nous jour de fête et de joie !
2ème lecture : 1 Jean 5:1-6
Bien-aimés, celui qui croit que Jésus est le Christ, celui-là est né de Dieu ; celui qui aime le Père qui a engendré aime aussi le Fils qui est né de lui. Voici comment nous reconnaissons que nous aimons les enfants de Dieu : lorsque nous aimons Dieu et que nous accomplissons ses commandements. Car tel est l’amour de Dieu : garder ses commandements ; et ses commandements ne sont pas un fardeau, puisque tout être qui est né de Dieu est vainqueur du monde. Or la victoire remportée sur le monde, c’est notre foi. Qui donc est vainqueur du monde ? N’est-ce pas celui qui croit que Jésus est le Fils de Dieu ? C’est lui, Jésus Christ, qui est venu par l’eau et par le sang : non pas seulement avec l’eau, mais avec l’eau et avec le sang. Et celui qui rend témoignage, c’est l’Esprit, car l’Esprit est la vérité.

Évangile : Jean 20, 19-31
C’était après la mort de Jésus. Le soir venu, en ce premier jour de la semaine, alors que les portes du lieu où se trouvaient les disciples étaient verrouillées par crainte des Juifs, Jésus vint, et il était là au milieu d’eux. Il leur dit : « La paix soit avec vous ! » Après cette parole, il leur montra ses mains et son côté. Les disciples furent remplis de joie en voyant le Seigneur. Jésus leur dit de nouveau : « La paix soit avec vous ! De même que le Père m’a envoyé, moi aussi, je vous envoie. » Ayant ainsi parlé, il souffla sur eux et il leur dit: « Recevez l’Esprit Saint. À qui vous remettrez ses péchés, ils seront remis ; à qui vous maintiendrez ses péchés, ils seront maintenus. » Or, l’un des Douze, Thomas, appelé Didyme (c’est-à-dire Jumeau), n’était pas avec eux quand Jésus était venu. Les autres disciples lui disaient : « Nous avons vu le Seigneur !» Mais il leur déclara : « Si je ne vois pas dans ses mains la marque des clous, si je ne mets pas mon doigt dans la marque des clous, si je ne mets pas la main dans son côté, non, je ne croirai pas ! » Huit jours plus tard, les disciples se trouvaient de nouveau dans la maison, et Thomas était avec eux. Jésus vient, alors que les portes étaient verrouillées, et il était là au milieu d’eux. Il dit : « La paix soit avec vous ! » Puis il dit à Thomas : « Avance ton doigt ici, et vois mes mains ; avance ta main, et mets-la dans mon côté : cesse d’être incrédule, sois croyant. » Alors Thomas lui dit : « Mon Seigneur et mon Dieu! » Jésus lui dit : « Parce que tu m’as vu, tu crois. Heureux ceux qui croient sans avoir vu. » Il y a encore beaucoup d’autres signes que Jésus a faits en présence des disciples et qui ne sont pas écrits dans ce livre. Mais ceux-là ont été écrits pour que vous croyiez que Jésus est le Christ, le Fils de Dieu, et pour qu’en croyant, vous ayez la vie en son nom.
Prière sur les offrandes
Accueille avec bonté, Seigneur, les offrandes de tes fidèles (et de tous ceux qui viennent de renaître dans le Christ); Renouvelés par la foi et le baptême, qu´ils parviennent au bonheur sans fin. Par Jésus.

Jésus dit à Thomas: «Avance ta main, touche du doigt l´endroit des clous; ne sois pas incrédule, sois croyant», alléluia. Jn 20, 27
Prière après la communion
Nous t´en prions, Dieu tout-puissant: Que le mystère pascal accueilli dans cette communion ne cesse jamais d´agir en nos cœurs. Par Jésus.
Méditation
Thomas n’était-il pas un homme ? Un des disciples ? Ses frères lui disaient: Nous avons vu le Seigneur. Et lui : Si je ne touche pas, si je ne mets pas mon doigt dans son côté, je ne croirai pas. Mais dès qu’il a touché, il s’écrie : Mon Seigneur et mon Dieu. Il a touché l’homme, il a reconnu Dieu. Il a touché la chair, il s’est tourné vers la Parole, car la Parole s’est faite chair et elle a habité parmi nous.

O God, who by the abundance of your grace, give increase to the peoples who believe in you, look with favour on those you have chosen and clothe with blessed immortality those reborn through the Sacrament of Baptism. First reading : Acts 4:13-21
The rulers, elders and scribes were astonished at the assurance shown by Peter and John, considering they were uneducated laymen; and they recognised them as associates of Jesus; but when they saw the man who had been cured standing by their side, they could find no answer. So they ordered them to stand outside while the Sanhedrin had a private discussion. ‘What are we going to do with these men?’ they asked. ‘It is obvious to everybody in Jerusalem that a miracle has been worked through them in public, and we cannot deny it. But to stop the whole thing spreading any further among the people, let us caution them never to speak to anyone in this name again.’ So they called them in and gave them a warning on no account to make statements or to teach in the name of Jesus. But Peter and John retorted, ‘You must judge whether in God’s eyes it is right to listen to you and not to God. We cannot promise to stop proclaiming what we have seen and heard.’ The court repeated the warnings and then released them; they could not think of any way to punish them, since all the people were giving glory to God for what had happened.

Gospel : Mark 16:9-15
Having risen in the morning on the first day of the week, Jesus appeared first to Mary of Magdala from whom he had cast out seven devils. She then went to those who had been his companions, and who were mourning and in tears, and told them. But they did not believe her when they heard her say that he was alive and that she had seen him. After this, he showed himself under another form to two of them as they were on their way into the country. These went back and told the others, who did not believe them either. Lastly, he showed himself to the Eleven themselves while they were at table. He reproached them for their incredulity and obstinacy, because they had refused to believe those who had seen him after he had risen. And he said to them, ‘Go out to the whole world; proclaim the Good News to all creation.’

Grant, we pray, O Lord, that we may always find delight in these paschal mysteries, so that the renewal constantly at work within us may be the cause of our unending joy. Through Christ our Lord.

Look with kindness upon your people, O Lord, and grant, we pray, that those you were pleased to renew by eternal mysteries may attain in their flesh the incorruptible glory of the resurrection. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
Peter said, “It is impossible for us not to speak about what we have seen and heard.” Based on this faith, Jesus instructed, “Go into the whole world and proclaim the Gospel to every creature.” Faith puts us on a mission. Faith is not only something you ‘have’ but something you ‘do’. Faith healed the person with paralysis. Faith has the ultimate victory over evil. The Sanhedrin tries to intimidate Peter and John to get them to stop this talk about the dead teacher. But they discover it is hopeless to stem the excitement around the healed paralytic. An act of faith is not shutting off our brains. An act of faith is the prayer of the man who asked Jesus to heal his son, “I do believe; help my unbelief.” Pray for faith sincerely and unceasingly. Your Father, who gives good gifts to those who ask, will surely give you the Holy Spirit.

Homme marié et ami de saint Augustin, qui écrivit plusieurs ouvrages en réponse à ses questions, il fut nommé tribun par l’empereur Honorius afin qu’il aille réunifier l’Eglise en Afrique du Nord. Il y réussit assez bien jusqu’à ce qu’une révolte éclate. Malgré l’intervention de son ami, il fut exécuté.

Le Seigneur a fait sortir son peuple en grande liesse, et ses élus poussaient des cris de joie, alléluia.
Prière d’ouverture
Dieu qui donnes sans cesse ta grâce pour augmenter le nombre de tes enfants, veille sur ceux que tu viens d’agréger à ton peuple; ils ont pris naissance dans le baptême : qu’ils soient revêtus de l’immortalité du Christ, pour se présenter à la table de ses noces. Lui qui règne.
1ère lecture : Act 4, 13-21
En ces jours-là, les chefs du peuple, les Anciens et les scribes constataient l’assurance de Pierre et de Jean et, se rendant compte que c’était des hommes sans culture et de simples particuliers, ils étaient surpris ; d’autre part, ils reconnaissaient en eux ceux qui étaient avec Jésus. Mais comme ils voyaient, debout avec eux, l’homme qui avait été guéri, ils ne trouvaient rien à redire. Après leur avoir ordonné de quitter la salle du Conseil suprême, ils se mirent à discuter entre eux. Ils disaient: «Qu’allons-nous faire de ces gens-là ? Il est notoire, en effet, qu’ils ont opéré un miracle; cela fut manifeste pour tous les habitants de Jérusalem, et nous ne pouvons pas le nier. Mais pour en limiter la diffusion dans le peuple, nous allons les menacer afin qu’ils ne parlent plus à personne en ce nom-là. » Ayant rappelé Pierre et Jean, ils leur interdirent formellement de parler ou d’enseigner au nom de Jésus. Ceux-ci leur répliquèrent: « Est-il juste devant Dieu de vous écouter, plutôt que d’écouter Dieu? À vous de juger. Quant à nous, il nous est impossible de nous taire sur ce que nous avons vu et entendu. » Après de nouvelles menaces, ils les relâchèrent, faute d’avoir trouvé le moyen de les punir: c’était à cause du peuple, car tout le monde rendait gloire à Dieu pour ce qui était arrivé.

Évangile : Marc 16, 9-15
Ressuscité le matin, le premier jour de la semaine, Jésus apparut d’abord à Marie Madeleine, de laquelle il avait expulsé sept démons. Celle-ci partit annoncer la nouvelle à ceux qui, ayant vécu avec lui, s’affligeaient et pleuraient. Quand ils entendirent que Jésus était vivant et qu’elle l’avait vu, ils refusèrent de croire. Après cela, il se manifesta sous un autre aspect à deux d’entre eux qui étaient en chemin pour aller à la campagne. Ceux-ci revinrent l’annoncer aux autres, qui ne les crurent pas non plus. Enfin, il se manifesta aux Onze eux-mêmes pendant qu’ils étaient à table : il leur reprocha leur manque de foi et la dureté de leurs cœurs parce qu’ils n’avaient pas cru ceux qui l’avaient contemplé ressuscité. Puis il leur dit : « Allez dans le monde entier. Proclamez l’Évangile : à toute la création. »
Prière sur les offrandes
Donne-nous, Seigneur, de te rendre grâce toujours par ces mystères de Pâques ; ils continuent en nous ton œuvre de rédemption, qu’ils nous soient une source intarissable de joie. Par Jésus.

Regarde avec bonté, Seigneur, le peuple que tu as rénové par tes sacrements ; accorde-nous de parvenir à la résurrection bienheureuse, toi qui nous as destinés à connaître ta gloire. Par Jésus.
Méditation
Marie réussit sa mission : annoncer la bonne nouvelle aux autres, mais certains ne collaborent pas. C’est la dureté de cœur qui nous éloigne du salut. Nous rejetons souvent les témoignages de la présence du Seigneur dans notre vie. Si nous ne croyons pas à ceux qui l’ont vu et ceux qui le sentent encore présent dans leur vie, à qui croirons-nous? Ouvre ton cœur aux vérités de foi dans un monde en proie au rationalisme et ses corolaires ; une foi vide, superficielle, sans croix et sans sacrifice. Qu’est-ce qui m’empêche d’annoncer le Christ avec conviction : le manque de foi ou la dureté du cœur ?

Quand éclata la persécution à Salonique, elle s’enfuit comme beaucoup d’autres personnes dans la montagne pour se réfugier. Quelques temps après, elle se reprocha cette lâcheté et revint à la maison. Elle y fut arrêtée. Ayant refusé d’apostasier, elle fut brulée vive, toute jeune, en 304.

Tel un berger, le Seigneur emmène son peuple, il le rassure, tandis que les flots de la mer recouvrent l’ennemi, alléluia.
Prière d’ouverture
Dieu éternel et tout-puissant, tu as offert aux hommes le sacrement de Pâques pour les rétablir dans ton alliance ; accorde-nous d’exprimer par toute notre vie ce mystère que nous célébrons dans la foi. Par Jésus Christ…
1ère lecture : Act 4, 1-12
En ces jours-là, après la guérison de l’infirme, comme Pierre et Jean parlaient encore au peuple, les prêtres survinrent, avec le commandant du Temple et les sadducéens ; ils étaient excédés de les voir enseigner le peuple et annoncer, en la personne de Jésus, la résurrection d’entre les morts. Ils les firent arrêter et placer sous bonne garde jusqu’au lendemain, puisque c’était déjà le soir. Or, beaucoup de ceux qui avaient entendu la Parole devinrent croyants ; à ne compter que les hommes, il y en avait environ cinq mille. Le lendemain se réunirent à Jérusalem les chefs du peuple, les anciens et les scribes. Il y avait là Hanne le grand prêtre, Caïphe, Jean, Alexandre, et tous ceux qui appartenaient aux familles de grands prêtres. Ils firent amener Pierre et Jean au milieu d’eux et les questionnèrent : «Par quelle puissance, par le nom de qui, avez-vous fait cette guérison?»Alors Pierre, rempli de l’Esprit Saint, leur déclara: «Chefs du peuple et anciens, nous sommes interrogés aujourd’hui pour avoir fait du bien à un infirme, et l’on nous demande comment cet homme a été sauvé. Sachez-le donc, vous tous, ainsi que tout le peuple d’Israël : c’est par le nom de Jésus le Nazaréen, lui que vous avez crucifié mais que Dieu a ressuscité d’entre les morts, c’est par lui que ces hommes trouvent là, devant vous, bien portant. Ce Jésus est la pierre méprisée de vous, les bâtisseurs, mais devenue la pierre d’angle. En nul autre que lui, il n’y a de salut, car, sous le ciel, aucun autre nom n’est donné aux hommes, qui puisse nous sauver. »

Évangile : Jean 21, 1-14
En ce temps-là, Jésus se manifesta encore aux disciples sur le bord de la mer de Tibériade, et voici comment. Il y avait là, ensemble, Simon-Pierre, avec Thomas, appelé Didyme (c’est-à-dire Jumeau), Nathanaël, de Cana de Galilée, les fils de Zébédée, et deux autres de ses disciples. Simon-Pierre leur dit: « Je m’en vais à la pêche. » Ils lui répondent: «Nous aussi, nous allons avec toi. » Ils partirent et montèrent dans la barque; or, cette nuit-là, ils ne prirent rien. Au lever du jour, Jésus se tenait sur le rivage, mais les disciples ne savaient pas que c’était lui. Jésus leur dit : « Les enfants, auriez-vous quelque chose à manger?» Ils lui répondirent : « Non. » Il leur dit: « Jetez le filet à droite de la barque, et vous trouverez. » Ils jetèrent donc le filet, et cette fois ils n’arrivaient pas à le tirer, tellement il y avait de poissons. Alors, le disciple que Jésus aimait dit à Pierre: « C’est le Seigneur ! » Quand Simon-Pierre entendit que c’était le Seigneur, il passa un vêtement, car il n’avait rien sur lui, et il se jeta à l’eau. Les autres disciples arrivèrent en barque, traînant le filet plein de poissons ; la terre n’était qu’à une centaine de mètres. Une fois descendus à terre, ils aperçoivent, disposé là, un feu de braise avec du poisson posé dessus, et du pain. Jésus leur dit : « Apportez donc de ces poissons que vous venez de prendre. » Simon-Pierre remonta et tira jusqu’à terre le filet plein de gros poissons : il y en avait cent cinquante-trois. Et, malgré cette quantité, le filet ne s’était pas déchiré. Jésus leur dit alors : « Venez manger. » Aucun des disciples n’osait lui demander: « Qui es-tu ? » Ils savaient que c’était le Seigneur. Jésus s’approche; il prend le pain et le leur donne ; et de même pour le poisson. C’était la troisième fois que Jésus ressuscité d’entre les morts se manifestait à ses disciples.
Prière sur les offrandes
Accomplis en nous, Seigneur très bon, l’échange que nous attendons de cette offrande pascale ; transfigure en amour du ciel l’amour que nous portons au monde. Par Jésus.

Prière après la communion
Ne cesse pas de protéger avec amour, Seigneur, ceux que tu as sauvés : la passion de ton Fils les a rachetés, qu’ils mettent leur joie dans sa résurrection. Lui qui règne.
Méditation
Jésus reviens sur le point de départ de sa rencontre avec les premiers disciples. Il les trouve entrain de vaquer à leurs occupations d’antan : la vie retourne à la normale. Cet épisode nous montre que sans Jésus la vie du chrétien n’est pas fructueuse. Si nous ne sommes pas obéissants à la voix de Jésus, si nous n’écoutons pas sa Parole, nous ne récolterons rien. Jésus apparait chaque fois que nous célébrons la Sainte Eucharistie. Elle est le lieu par excellence pour expérimenter sa présence bienveillante.

First reading : Acts 4:1-12
While Peter and John were talking to the people the priests came up to them, accompanied by the captain of the Temple and the Sadducees. They were extremely annoyed at their teaching the people the doctrine of the resurrection from the dead by proclaiming the resurrection of Jesus. They arrested them, but as it was already late, they held them till the next day. But many of those who had listened to their message became believers, the total number of whom had now risen to something like five thousand. The next day the rulers, elders and Scribes had a meeting in Jerusalem with Annas the high priest, Caiaphas, Jonathan, Alexander and all the members of the high-priestly families. They made the prisoners stand in the middle and began to interrogate them, ‘By what power, and by whose name have you men done this?’ Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, addressed them, ‘Rulers of the people, and elders! If you are questioning us today about an act of kindness to a cripple, and asking us how he was healed, then I am glad to tell you all, and would indeed be glad to tell the whole people of Israel, that it was by the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, the one you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, by this name and by no other that this man is able to stand up perfectly healthy, here in your presence, today. This is the stone rejected by you the builders, but which has proved to be the keystone. For of all the names in the world given to men, this is the only one by which we can be saved.’

Jesus showed himself again to the disciples. It was by the Sea of Tiberias, and it happened like this: Simon Peter, Thomas called the Twin, Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee and two more of his disciples were together. Simon Peter said, ‘I’m going fishing.’ They replied, ‘We’ll come with you.’ They went out and got into the boat but caught nothing that night. It was light by now and there stood Jesus on the shore, though the disciples did not realise that it was Jesus. Jesus called out, ‘Have you caught anything, friends?’ And when they answered, ‘No’, he said, ‘Throw the net out to starboard and you’ll find something.’ So they dropped the net, and there were so many fish that they could not haul it in. The disciple Jesus loved said to Peter, ‘It is the Lord.’ At these words ‘It is the Lord’, Simon Peter, who had practically nothing on, wrapped his cloak round him and jumped into the water. The other disciples came on in the boat, towing the net and the fish; they were only about a hundred yards from land. As soon as they came ashore they saw that there was some bread there, and a charcoal fire with fish cooking on it. Jesus said, ‘Bring some of the fish you have just caught.’ Simon Peter went aboard and dragged the net to the shore, full of big fish, one hundred and fifty-three of them; and in spite of there being so many the net was not broken. Jesus said to them, ‘Come and have breakfast.’ None of the disciples was bold enough to ask, ‘Who are you?’; they knew quite well it was the Lord. Jesus then stepped forward, took the bread and gave it to them, and the same with the fish. This was the third time that Jesus showed himself to the disciples after rising from the dead.
Prayer over the Offerings
Perfect within us, O Lord, we pray, the solemn exchange brought about by these paschal offerings, that we may be drawn from earthly desires to a longing for the things of heaven. Through Christ our Lord.

Prayer after Communion
Keep safe, O Lord, we pray, those whom you have saved by your kindness that, redeemed by the Passion of your Son, they may rejoice in his Resurrection. Who lives and reigns for ever and ever.
Meditation
Peter’s life has changed due to his encounters with the risen Jesus. The same Peter who denied Jesus now preaches to the Sanhedrin. What a change, from denying Jesus to preaching about Jesus to the Sanhedrin. Again, Peter is dragging the net full of fish to the shore because he has met the risen Jesus many times, and as a result, he has changed. It is impossible to meet Jesus and remain the same. There have been times when we, like Peter, failed the Lord. He experienced the power of Christ’s forgiveness, which changed his life. Everything else he did after Christ forgave him of his sins and commanded him to take care of his sheep was to show his appreciation for the forgiveness he received. Christ’s forgiveness motivated Peter to proclaim him in the presence of the Sanhedrin. Christ’s forgiveness should also urge us to proclaim him without fear to the whole world.

Saint Isidore of Servile

He was born in Spain in c. 560. As Archbishop of Seville, he was prolific in his writings and diligent in governing the Church, Isidore did not neglect the service of those in need. St. Isidore of Seville died on April 4 of the year 636.

First reading : Acts 3:11-26
Everyone came running towards Peter and John in great excitement, to the Portico of Solomon, as it is called, where the man was still clinging to Peter and John. When Peter saw the people he addressed them, ‘Why are you so surprised at this? Why are you staring at us as though we had made this man walk by our own power or holiness? You are Israelites, and it is the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the God of our ancestors, who has glorified his servant Jesus, the same Jesus you handed over and then disowned in the presence of Pilate after Pilate had decided to release him. It was you who accused the Holy One, the Just One, you who demanded the reprieve of a murderer while you killed the prince of life. The disciples told their story of what had happened on the road and how they had recognised him at the breaking of bread. But he said, ‘Why are you so agitated, and why are these doubts rising in your hearts? Look at my hands and feet; yes, it is I indeed. Touch me and see for yourselves; a ghost has no flesh and bones as you can see I have.’ And as he said this he showed them his hands and feet. Their joy was so great that they still could not believe it, and they stood there dumbfounded; so he said to them, ‘Have you anything here to eat?’ And they offered him a piece of grilled fish, which he took and ate before their eyes. Meditation
Peter and John heal a crippled man and proclaim that the man has been healed by his faith in the name of Jesus. Peter addresses the crowd and calls on them, “Repent, therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be wiped away.” Peter is an excellent example of repentance. He denied Christ three times. He had to choose: to follow Judas’s example by taking his own life or to repent and have his sins wiped away. Peter chose the latter and became the leader of the Church. In the story from Luke, the risen Christ appeases the fearful apostles and orders them to be his witnesses. No matter how far we have strayed, we can always return to the cross. The ultimate direction finder is Christ.

Aussi, devenu successeur de Léandre à Séville en 601, il acheva de ramener les Wisigoths au catholicisme, présida les conciles qui donnèrent à l’Espagne son organisation et fut le promoteur de la liturgie mozarabe. Ses écrits, compilation de toutes les connaissances de son temps, firent de lui l’un des maîtres du moyen âge latin

1ère lecture : Ac 3, 11-26
En ces jours-là, l’infirme que Pierre et Jean venaient de guérir ne les lâchait plus. Tout le peuple accourut vers eux au Portique dit de Salomon. Les gens étaient stupéfaits. Voyant cela, Pierre interpella le peuple : « Hommes d’Israël, pourquoi vous étonner ? Pourquoi fixer les yeux sur nous, comme si c’était en vertu de notre puissance personnelle ou de notre piété que nous lui avons donné de marcher ? Le Dieu d’Abraham, d’Isaac et de Jacob, le Dieu de nos pères, a glorifié son serviteur Jésus, alors que vous, vous l’aviez livré, vous l’aviez renié en présence de Pilate qui était décidé à le relâcher. Vous avez renié le Saint et le Juste, et vous avez demandé qu’on vous accorde la grâce d’un meurtrier. Vous avez tué le Prince de la vie, lui que Dieu a ressuscité d’entre les morts, nous en sommes témoins. Tout repose sur la foi dans le nom de Jésus Christ : c’est ce nom lui-même qui vient d’affermir cet homme que vous regardez et connaissez ; oui, la foi qui vient par Jésus l’a rétabli dans son intégrité physique, en votre présence à tous. D’ailleurs, frères, je sais bien que vous avez agi dans l’ignorance, vous et vos chefs. Mais Dieu a ainsi accompli ce qu’il avait d’avance annoncé par la bouche de tous les prophètes : que le Christ, son Messie souffrirait. Convertissez-vous et tournez-vous vers Dieu pour que vos péchés soient effacés. Ainsi viendront les temps de la fraîcheur de la part du Seigneur, et il enverra le Christ Jésus qui vous est destiné. Il faut en effet que le ciel l’accueille jusqu’à l’époque où tout sera rétabli, comme Dieu l’avait dit par la bouche des saints, ceux d’autrefois, ses prophètes. Moïse a déclaré : Le Seigneur votre Dieu suscitera pour vous, du milieu de vos frères, un prophète comme moi : vous l’écouterez en tout ce qu’il vous dira. Quiconque n’écoutera pas ce prophète sera retranché du peuple. Ensuite, tous les prophètes qui ont parlé depuis Samuel et ses successeurs, aussi nombreux furent-ils, ont annoncé les jours où nous sommes. C’est vous qui êtes les fils des prophètes et de l’Alliance que Dieu a conclue avec vos pères, quand il disait à Abraham : En ta descendance seront bénies toutes les familles de la terre. C’est pour vous d’abord que Dieu a suscité son Serviteur, et il l’a envoyé vous bénir, pourvu que chacun de vous se détourne de sa méchanceté. »

Évangile : Lc 24, 35-48
En ce temps-là, les disciples qui rentraient d’Emmaüs racontaient aux onze Apôtres et à leurs compagnons ce qui s’était passé sur la route, et comment le Seigneur s’était fait reconnaître par eux à la fraction du pain. Comme ils en parlaient encore, lui-même fut présent au milieu d’eux, et leur dit : « La paix soit avec vous ! » Saisis de frayeur et de crainte, ils croyaient voir un esprit. Jésus leur dit : « Pourquoi êtes-vous bouleversés ? Et pourquoi ces pensées qui surgissent dans votre cœur ? Voyez mes mains et mes pieds : c’est bien moi ! Touchez-moi, regardez : un esprit n’a pas de chair ni d’os comme vous constatez que j’en ai. » Après cette parole, il leur montra ses mains et ses pieds. Dans leur joie, ils n’osaient pas encore y croire, et restaient saisis d’étonnement. Jésus leur dit : « Avez-vous ici quelque chose à manger ? » Ils lui présentèrent une part de poisson grillé qu’il prit et mangea devant eux. Puis il leur déclara : « Voici les paroles que je vous ai dites quand j’étais encore avec vous : “Il faut que s’accomplisse tout ce qui a été écrit à mon sujet dans la loi de Moïse, les Prophètes et les Psaumes.” » Alors il ouvrit leur intelligence à la compréhension des Écritures. Il leur dit : « Ainsi est-il écrit que le Christ souffrirait, qu’il ressusciterait d’entre les morts le troisième jour, et que la conversion serait proclamée en son nom, pour le pardon des péchés, à toutes les nations, en commençant par Jérusalem. À vous d’en être les témoins.»

Méditation
Avec une présentation pleine d’émotion, les disciples racontent aux autres ce qui s’est passé quand ils étaient en chemin. Immédiatement, Jésus apparait alors que les portes sont fermées et ils croient voir des esprits. « Pourquoi êtes-vous bouleversés ?» : la peur ne procure pas de la paix. Cet état des choses est provoqué par le manque de foi, manque de confiance en la Parole de Dieu. Nous sommes invités à méditer sur ces questions de Jésus. Arrêtons de désespérer, ne nous décourageons pas de si tôt, le Seigneur entrera toujours dans nos cœurs et les transformera.

First reading : Acts 3:1-10
Once, when Peter and John were going up to the Temple for the prayers at the ninth hour, it happened that there was a man being carried past. He was a cripple from birth; and they used to put him down every day near the Temple entrance called the Beautiful Gate so that he could beg from the people going in. When this man saw Peter and John on their way into the Temple he begged from them. Both Peter and John looked straight at him and said, ‘Look at us.’ He turned to them expectantly, hoping to get something from them, but Peter said, ‘I have neither silver nor gold, but I will give you what I have: in the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, walk!’ Peter then took him by the hand and helped him to stand up. Instantly his feet and ankles became firm, he jumped up, stood, and began to walk, and he went with them into the Temple, walking and jumping and praising God. Everyone could see him walking and praising God, and they recognised him as the man who used to sit begging at the Beautiful Gate of the Temple. They were all astonished and unable to explain what had happened to him.

Two of the disciples of Jesus were on their way to a village called Emmaus, seven miles from Jerusalem, and they were talking together about all that had happened. Now as they talked this over, Jesus himself came up and walked by their side; but something prevented them from recognising him. He said to them, ‘What matters are you discussing as you walk along?’ They stopped short, their faces downcast. Then one of them, called Cleopas, answered him, ‘You must be the only person staying in Jerusalem who does not know the things that have been happening there these last few days.’ ‘What things?’ he asked. ‘All about Jesus of Nazareth’ they answered ‘who proved he was a great prophet by the things he said and did in the sight of God and of the whole people; and how our chief priests and our leaders handed him over to be sentenced to death, and had him crucified. Our own hope had been that he would be the one to set Israel free. And this is not all: two whole days have gone by since it all happened; and some women from our group have astounded us: they went to the tomb in the early morning, and when they did not find the body, they came back to tell us they had seen a vision of angels who declared he was alive. Some of our friends went to the tomb and found everything exactly as the women had reported, but of him they saw nothing.’ Then he said to them, ‘You foolish men! So slow to believe the full message of the prophets! Was it not ordained that the Christ should suffer and so enter into his glory?’ Then, starting with Moses and going through all the prophets, he explained to them the passages throughout the Scriptures that were about himself. When they drew near to the village to which they were going, he made as if to go on; but they pressed him to stay with them. ‘It is nearly evening’ they said ‘and the day is almost over.’ So he went in to stay with them. Now while he was with them at table, he took the bread and said the blessing; then he broke it and handed it to them. And their eyes were opened and they recognised him; but he had vanished from their sight. Then they said to each other, ‘Did not our hearts burn within us as he talked to us on the road and explained the Scriptures to us?’ They set out that instant and returned to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven assembled together with their companions, who said to them, ‘Yes, it is true. The Lord has risen and has appeared to Simon.’ Then they told their story of what had happened on the road and how they had recognised him at the breaking of bread.

Receive, we pray, O Lord, the sacrifice which has redeemed the human race, and be pleased to accomplish in us salvation of mind and body. Through Christ our Lord.

We pray, O Lord, that the reverent reception of the Sacrament of your Son may cleanse us from our old ways and transform us into a new creation. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
Two of Jesus’ disciples, evidently bewildered and exhausted by recent events, were on their way to Emmaus when Jesus unexpectedly appeared to them. As they travelled, Jesus taught them the wisdom of the scriptures on the death and resurrection of the Son of Man, which greatly aided in their understanding of the entire event. When he broke bread with his followers, he revealed himself to them and their eyes were opened to the truth. Sometimes, we don’t understand what is happening in life. There seems to be no point in existence. We need to always pay attention to Jesus, who travels with us, and commune with him at the Eucharist at times like these. At this same table, questions are answered, uncertainty is dispelled, and doubts are banished. There is no surefire method to learn life’s meaning than this.

Prière d’ouverture
Dieu qui nous donne chaque année la joie de fêter la résurrection du Seigneur, ouvre-nous, à travers ces fêtes d’ici-bas, le chemin vers la joie éternelle. Par Jésus Christ.
1ère lecture : Act 3, 1-10
En ces jours-là, Pierre et Jean montaient au Temple pour la prière de l’après-midi, à la neuvième heure. On y amenait alors un homme, infirme de naissance, que l’on installait chaque jour à la porte du Temple, appelée la « Belle-Porte », pour qu’il demande l’aumône à ceux qui entraient. Voyant Pierre et Jean qui allaient entrer dans le Temple, il leur demanda l’aumône. Alors Pierre, ainsi que Jean, fixa les yeux sur lui, et il dit : « Regarde-nous ! » L’homme les observait, s’attendant à recevoir quelque chose de leur part. Pierre déclara : « De l’argent et de l’or, je n’en ai pas; mais ce que j’ai, je te le donne: au nom de Jésus Christ le Nazaréen, lève-toi et marche. » Alors, le prenant par la main droite, il le releva et, à l’instant même, ses pieds et ses chevilles s’affermirent. D’un bond, il fut debout et il marchait. Entrant avec eux dans le Temple, il marchait, bondissait, et louait Dieu. Et tout le peuple le vit marcher et louer Dieu. On le reconnaissait: c’est bien lui qui était assis à la « Belle-Porte» du Temple pour demander l’aumône. Et les gens étaient frappés de stupeur et désorientés devant ce qui lui était arrivé.

Rendez grâce au Seigneur, proclamez son nom, annoncez parmi les peuples ses hauts faits ; chantez et jouez pour lui, redites sans fin ses merveilles.
Glorifiez-vous de son nom très saint: joie pour les cœurs qui cherchent Dieu! Cherchez le Seigneur et sa puissance, recherchez sans trêve sa face.
Vous, la race d’Abraham son serviteur, les fils de Jacob, qu’il a choisis. Le Seigneur, c’est lui notre Dieu: ses jugements font loi pour l’univers.
Il s’est toujours souvenu de son alliance, parole édictée pour mille générations : promesse faite à Abraham, garantie par serment à Isaac.

Évangile : Luc 24, 13-35
Le même jour (c’est-à-dire le premier jour de la semaine), deux disciples faisaient route vers un village appelé Emmaüs, à deux heures de marche de Jérusalem, et ils parlaient entre eux de tout ce qui s’était passé. Or, tandis qu’ils s’entretenaient et s’interrogeaient, Jésus lui-même s’approcha, et il marchait avec eux. Mais leurs yeux étaient empêchés de le reconnaître. Jésus leur dit: «De quoi discutez-vous en marchant?» Alors, ils s’arrêtèrent, tout tristes. L’un des deux, nommé Cléophas, lui répondit: «Tu es bien le seul étranger résidant à Jérusalem qui ignore les événements de ces jours-ci. » Il leur dit: « Quels événements?» Ils lui répondirent : « Ce qui est arrivé à Jésus de Nazareth, cet homme qui était un prophète puissant par ses actes et ses paroles devant Dieu et devant tout le peuple : comment les grands prêtres et nos chefs l’ont livré, ils l’ont fait condamner à mort et ils l’ont crucifié. Nous, nous espérions que c’était lui qui allait délivrer Israël. Mais avec tout cela, voici déjà le troisième jour qui passe depuis que c’est arrivé. A vrai dire, des femmes de notre groupe nous ont remplis de stupeur. Quand, dès l’aurore, elles sont allées au tombeau, elles n’ont pas trouvé son corps ; elles sont venues nous dire qu’elles avaient même eu une vision : des anges, qui disaient qu’il est vivant. Quelques-uns de nos compagnons sont allés au tombeau, et ils ont trouvé les choses comme les femmes l’avaient dit ; mais lui, ils ne l’ont pas vu. » Il leur dit alors : « Esprits sans intelligence ! Comme votre cœur est lent à croire tout ce que les prophètes ont dit! Ne fallait-il pas que le Christ souffrît cela pour entrer dans sa gloire ? » Et, partant de Moïse et de tous les Prophètes, il leur interpréta, dans toute l’Écriture, ce qui le concernait. Quand ils approchèrent du village où ils se rendaient, Jésus fit semblant d’aller plus loin. Mais ils s’efforcèrent de le retenir: «Reste avec nous, car le soir approche et déjà le jour baisse. » Il entra donc pour rester avec eux. Quand il fut à table avec eux, ayant pris le pain, il prononça la bénédiction et, l’ayant rompu, il le leur donna. Alors leurs yeux s’ouvrirent, et ils le reconnurent, mais il disparut à leurs regards. Ils se dirent l’un à l’autre : « Notre cœur n’était-il pas brûlant en nous, tandis qu’il nous parlait sur la route et nous ouvrait les Écritures ? » À l’instant même, ils se levèrent et retournèrent à Jérusalem. Ils y trouvèrent réunis les onze Apôtres et leurs compagnons, qui leur dirent : «Le Seigneur est réellement ressuscité : il est apparu à Simon-Pierre.» À leur tour, ils racontaient ce qui s’était passé sur la route, et comment le Seigneur s’était fait reconnaître par eux à la fraction du pain.
Prière sur les offrandes
Accueille, Seigneur, le sacrifice qui rachète les hommes; et dans ton action bienveillante, procure-nous le salut de l’esprit et du corps. Par Jésus.

Au soir de la résurrection, les disciples reconnurent le Seigneur quand il rompit le pain, alléluia.
Prière après la communion
Nous te le demandons, Seigneur: que cette communion au mystère de ton Fils nous fasse entrer, libres de tout vieillissement, dans la nouvelle création. Par Jésus.
Méditation
Le verset 24 de l’Evangile présente un élément de doute malgré tout ce qui leur avait été rapporté.
Ces disciples ne sont pas ouverts au mystère sous leurs yeux, ils sont aveuglés. La réaction du Seigneur concerne tous ceux qui, malgré les efforts consentis pour leur passer le message, demeurent indifférents. Car nous les Ecritures qui ont tout prédit. La Parole de Dieu est la base de la connaissance du mystère du salut. Referons-nous à la Bible si nous comprendre le plan de salut de l’humanité.
