Second reading: 1 Peter 3:18-22
Christ himself, innocent though he was, had died once for sins, died for the guilty, to lead us to God. Now it was long ago, when Noah was still building that ark which saved only a small group of eight people ‘by water’, and when God was still waiting patiently, that these spirits refused to believe. That water is a type of the baptism which saves you now, and which is not the washing off of physical dirt but a pledge made to God from a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has entered heaven and is at God’s right hand, now that he has made the angels and Dominations and Powers his subjects.

Meditation
The account of the temptation in the Gospel of Mark reads almost like a telegram-it sounds staccato. There are just two verses compared to the lengthier and fuller eleven verses of Matthew and thirteen of Luke. Mark doesn’t bother about the content of the various temptations; he bluntly states that Jesus remained for forty days and was tempted by Satan. Wild beasts are traditional symbols of evil; like Satan, they prowl around looking for any signs of weakness. The Gospel of Mark underlines the theme of 40 days. Just as Jesus was tempted in the desert after 40 days of stay in the wilderness, we, too, are taking 40 days to enable us to resist temptation like Jesus. Therefore, in the face of these Jesus’s temptations, most of us would not have resisted even for one minute. Much more, we would have justified our decision with many excuses so that we would be convinced of having made a good choice. Who can resist the temptation that offers us power, dominion, and wealth?

Méditation
Le Carême est un temps de grâce où Dieu offre son salut à tous ses enfants. C’est ce que l’on peut apprendre de l’appel de Levi dans le passage de l’évangile de Luc de ce jour. Collecteur d’impôts de son état, Levi faisait partie de ceux envers qui la société juive était sans pitié car, étant considéré comme pécheur public. Nous le voyons d’ailleurs dans le reproche qui est fait à Jésus de faire bon accueil au pécheurs. Cependant, Jésus va saisir cette opportunité pour faire une catéchèse à ses détracteurs sur la miséricorde de Dieu.

Meditation
We have a record of the call of Matthew. Luke does not give any detail of Matthew’s life before his call by Jesus. We can speculate that he had probably heard of Jesus, but this is mere speculation. Jesus saw Matthew sitting in his tax booth and called to him. We need to remember that Matthew, as a Tax-Collector, was a rich man because tax collectors could levy what they wished over and above what was demanded by the government. He was well off and had a comfortable life. To follow Jesus meant the loss of all this, and he did. This is divine grace. Even though Matthew had it all, he was still without hope and God. The call brought him the blessing of eternal life with his eternal future in heaven. God calls us into this blessing, and we are given the grace to respond. In time we make a choice, but the choice is made possible by God’s grace working in us. After his conversion and following Jesus, Matthew witnesses Jesus by bringing other tax collectors to meet Jesus and hear his teaching and perhaps be called out of darkness into his marvellous light. Méditation Isaïe dans la première lecture dénonce les pratiques religieuses de ses contemporains qui n’honorent pas Dieu. Meditation
Jesus talks to us about fasting and its necessity. Fasting is an excellent spiritual discipline leading us to a deeper relationship with God. When we are in a deep relationship with God, we will know what to fast from. We are to fast from sin because it creeps so easily into our lives and clings tenaciously onto us. Sin destroys our relationship with God. Fasting is a spiritual means to restore that relationship. Fasting is also a form of prayer. Hence, may our fasting cleanse and empty us of our selfish desires and draw us closer to God. Remember, God has better common sense than man. We often look at things microscopically and fail to understand the bigger picture or their rationale. Sometimes we comply with a technical attitude rather than a discerning spirit behind the word of God. So the goal of fasting is neither to make us suffer nor to observe the rules faithfully, but to convert, to repent and turn away from the worldliness of our being and enter into a spirit of love and communion with God. During this Lent, we look forward to being with the Lord in prayer, fasting and almsgiving, in works of charity.

Meditation
Following Jesus entails a choice. Every decision contains the potential for life or death, as well as the potential for good or evil. We inherit a blessing if we can listen to our hearts and attend to the voice of God. In the Gospel, Jesus continues to guide the decisions that we must make. Some of his proposals are painful and difficult to implement. However, that is the path that leads to the fullness of life. To follow Jesus, we must take up the cross and deny ourselves. This road entails putting selfish goals aside, tolerating discomforts and fears, and accepting the chance of death. A disciple would pursue this path cheerfully, understanding that life on earth is not for self-gratification but for loving service to God and humankind. Such choices and decisions guide the Lenten journey towards the resurrection, a new and eternal existence.

Méditation
Jésus dans l’évangile de ce jour annonce sa passion, sa mort et sa résurrection à ses disciples. La passion pour Jésus n’est pas synonyme de faiblesse, mais bien une libre décision par amour pour le monde. Ainsi Il invite ses disciples à suivre son exemple en portant chacun leurs croix pour marcher à sa suite. C’est le prix à payer pour gagner le salut éternel offert par Dieu à ses vrais serviteurs et servantes.
Natifs de Thessalonique, Méthode, un ancien fonctionnaire impérial, et son jeune frère Constantin, le futur Cyrille, s’étaient faits moines avant d’être envoyés par Byzance auprès des peuples slaves. Pour ceux-ci, ils traduisirent en slavon la Bible et les livres liturgiques, et inventèrent à cet effet l’alphabet dit ‘’cyrillique’’, encore en usage aujourd’hui. Ils se heurtèrent à l’opposition de missionnaires de rite latin qui les dénoncèrent au pape à cause de leur emploi de la langue vivante.

Méditation
Aujourd’hui Mercredi des Cendres marque le début du Carême qui est un temps de prière, de jeûne et de partage. C’est pour cette raison que le prophète Joel dans la première lecture nous invitait à revenir vers le Seigneur de cœur et d’âme en vue d’une conversion sincère. Raison pour laquelle en ce jour où nous débutons le Carême, Jésus nous donne les attitudes qui pourront nous aider à mieux revenir vers le Seigneur pendant cette période de 40 jours. Il s’agit de la prière, du jeûne et de l’aumône.
Du 04 au 10 février 2024, la communauté du philosophât Les Martyrs de Barbastro de Nkolbisson à Yaoundé a eu l’honneur d’accueillir le Très Révérend Père Jude Thaddeus Langeh, Cmf, Supérieur Majeur des Missionnaires Claretains de la Délégation Indépendante du Cameroun, pour une visite canonique des plus significatives.
Cette visite revêtait une importance particulière pour la communauté du philosophât, offrant l’opportunité aux membres de partager leurs expériences, leurs défis et leurs succès sous le regard bienveillant de leur Supérieur Majeur. Pendant cette semaine chargée, le Très Révérend Père Jude a pris le temps de rencontrer individuellement les membres de la communauté, écoutant attentivement leurs préoccupations et offrant des conseils éclairés.
Au-delà des rencontres individuelles, des réunions communautaires ont été organisées, permettant à chacun de participer à des discussions ouvertes sur la vie de la communauté, ainsi que sur les moyens d’approfondir leur engagement envers leur mission religieuse et leur service à la société. par la même occasion 13 étudiants de la troisième année de philosophie ont fait leur entrée au postulat canonique et le frère William Ngakoutou a été envoyé en mission par le Père Supérieur.
La visite canonique a également été l’occasion de célébrer la foi et la fraternité au sein de la communauté. Des célébrations liturgiques spéciales ont été organisées, mettant en lumière la spiritualité et la dévotion des Missionnaires Claretains. Ces moments de prière et de réflexion ont renforcé les liens au sein de la communauté et ont inspiré un renouvellement de l’engagement envers la mission évangélique.
En conclusion, la visite canonique du Très Révérend Père Jude Thaddeus Langeh à la communauté du philosophât Les Martyrs de Barbastro de Nkolbisson à Yaoundé a été un moment de bénédiction et de renforcement pour tous ceux qui y ont participé. Elle a souligné l’importance de la communion fraternelle, de la prière et de l’action au service de la mission évangélique des Missionnaires Claretains dans le monde d’aujourd’hui.

Meditation
Despite all the miracles Jesus had performed, the disciples still did not understand him. Jesus chastises the disciples for their lack of comprehension. They appear to be frustrating Jesus by being oblivious to his message to them. They seemed to have overlooked who he was and what he was ultimately all about. Up to this point in the gospel, Jesus has gained a following among the people; they appear to be drawn to or intrigued by him. However, beginning in chapter 8, Jesus encounters people turning away from him (including the disciples themselves). It must have irritated Jesus to see how profoundly they misunderstood him. He’s spent so much time with them, taught them well, nurtured them, and probably expected them to understand his message. But they did not. Let us ask God to open our hearts to always trust in God.
