Conversion de SAINT Paul Apôtre

Bien différents l’un de l’autre, ces deux hommes furent non seulement des disciples, mais des collaborateurs et des amis très chers à l’Apôtre Paul, dont ils partagèrent les épreuves. Timothée était né à Lystres, d’un père grec et d’une mère juive ; il avait une santé fragile et un tempérament impressionnable ; mais cela ne l’empêcha pas d’exercer le ministère pastoral à Ephèse notamment.

Prière d’ouverture
Dieu qui as donné à Tite et à Timothée une vertu digne des apôtres, fais que, soutenus par leurs prières, vivant avec justice et piété dans ce monde, nous parvenions au ciel, notre patrie. Par Jésus.
1ère lecture : 2 Timothée 1, 1-8
Paul, apôtre du Christ Jésus par la volonté de Dieu, selon la promesse de la vie que nous avons dans le Christ Jésus, à Timothée, mon enfant bien-aimé. À toi, la grâce, la miséricorde et la paix de la part de Dieu le Père et du Christ Jésus notre Seigneur. Je suis plein de gratitude envers Dieu, à qui je rends un culte avec une conscience pure, à la suite de mes ancêtres, je lui rends grâce en me souvenant continuellement de toi dans mes prières, nuit et jour. Me rappelant tes larmes, j’ai un très vif désir de te revoir pour être rempli de joie. J’ai souvenir de la foi sincère qui est en toi : c’était celle qui habitait d’abord Loïs, ta grand-mère, et celle d’Eunice, ta mère, et j’ai la conviction que c’est aussi la tienne. Voilà pourquoi, je te le rappelle, ravive le don gratuit de Dieu, ce don qui est en toi depuis que je t’ai imposé les mains. Car ce n’est pas un esprit de peur que Dieu nous a donné, mais un esprit de force, d’amour et de pondération. N’aie donc pas honte de rendre témoignage à notre Seigneur, et n’aie pas honte de moi, qui suis son prisonnier ; mais, avec la force de Dieu, prends ta part des souffrances liées à l’annonce de l’Évangile.

Pitié pour moi, mon Dieu, dans ton amour,selon ta grande miséricorde, efface mon péché. Lave-moi tout entier de ma faute, purifie-moi de mon offense.
Oui, je connais mon péché, ma faute est toujours devant moi. Contre toi, et toi seul, j’ai péché, ce qui est mal à tes yeux, je l’ai fait.
Ainsi, tu peux parler et montrer ta justice, être juge et montrer ta victoire. Moi, je suis né dans la faute, j’étais pécheur dès le sein de ma mère.
Fais que j’entende les chants et la fête : ils danseront, les os que tu broyais. Détourne ta face de mes fautes, enlève tous mes péchés.

Évangile : Mc 4, 26-34
En ce temps-là, Jésus disait aux foules : « Il en est du règne de Dieu comme d’un homme qui jette en terre la semence : nuit et jour, qu’il dorme ou qu’il se lève, la semence germe et grandit, il ne sait comment. D’elle-même, la terre produit d’abord l’herbe,`puis l’épi, enfin du blé plein l’épi. Et dès que le blé est mûr, il y met la faucille, puisque le temps de la moisson est arrivé.» Il disait encore : « À quoi allons-nous comparer le règne de Dieu ? Par quelle parabole pouvons-nous le représenter ? Il est comme une graine de moutarde : quand on la sème en terre, elle est la plus petite de toutes les semences Mais quand on l’a semée, elle grandit et dépasse toutes les plantes potagères ; et elle étend de longues branches, si bien que les oiseaux du ciel peuvent faire leur nid à son ombre. » Par de nombreuses paraboles semblables, Jésus leur annonçait la Parole, dans la mesure où ils étaient capables de l’entendre. Il ne leur disait rien sans parabole, mais il expliquait tout à ses disciples en particulier.

Dans ta bonté, Seigneur, accepte notre offrande: Qu’elle soit sanctifiée et serve ainsi à notre salut. Par Jésus.

Ensemble, approchez du Seigneur: resplendissez de sa lumière et sur votre visage il n’y aura plus d’ombre.

Permets, nous t’en prions, Dieu tout-puissant, Qu’ayant reçu de toi la grâce d’une nouvelle vie, nous puissions nous en émerveiller toujours. Par Jésus.
Méditation
Comme à Timothée et à Tite, responsables respectivement des Églises d’Éphèse et de Crète, à qui saint Paul a passé le relai, nous sommes invités à raviver le don de Dieu qui est en nous, mais aussi à passer ce témoin aux générations qui nous succèdent. Ce don, c’est l’Esprit de Dieu qui est force, le feu de son amour. Assumons-le, ainsi que les engagements auxquels il nous appelle : devenir une terre productrice.

Saul, the young man who looked after the cloaks of the men who were stoning St Stephen, grew into a dedicated and efficient persecutor of Christians. Today’s feast celebrates the day that Christ appeared to him in a vision as he was on the way to Damascus, reproached him for his persecutions and converted him to the true faith.

O God, who taught the whole world through the preaching of the blessed Apostle Paul, draw us, we pray, nearer to you through the example of him whose conversion we celebrate today, and so make us witnesses to your truth in the world. First reading : Acts 22:3-16
Paul said to the people, ‘I am a Jew and was born at Tarsus in Cilicia. I was brought up here in this city. I studied under Gamaliel and was taught the exact observance of the Law of our ancestors. In fact, I was as full of duty towards God as you are today. I even persecuted this Way to the death, and sent women as well as men to prison in chains as the high priest and the whole council of elders can testify, since they even sent me with letters to their brothers in Damascus. When I set off it was with the intention of bringing prisoners back from there to Jerusalem for punishment. ‘I was on that journey and nearly at Damascus when about midday a bright light from heaven suddenly shone round me. I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?” I answered: Who are you, Lord? and he said to me, “I am Jesus the Nazarene, and you are persecuting me.” The people with me saw the light but did not hear his voice as he spoke to me. I said: What am I to do, Lord? The Lord answered, “Stand up and go into Damascus, and there you will be told what you have been appointed to do.” The light had been so dazzling that I was blind and my companions had to take me by the hand; and so I came to Damascus. ‘Someone called Ananias, a devout follower of the Law and highly thought of by all the Jews living there, came to see me; he stood beside me and said, “Brother Saul, receive your sight.” Instantly my sight came back and I was able to see him. Meditation
Jesus sends out his eleven apostles with a mandate and a mission to proclaim the good news to all creation. He was to do the same to Paul after his conversion. Paul’s conversion was one of those extraordinary things that happen to people. It was be a highly dramatised scenario that Paul encountered Jesus who claimed to be the victim to Paul’s persecution. Could Paul have persisted in his persecution of Christians after his encounter with Jesus? What am I to do? Paul asked, and Jesus guided him through the right path to meet with the right people and begin to do the right thing.

Originaire de Perse, il y fut arrêté pour sa foi au Christ et fut soumis à de terribles supplices. A l’époque de la persécution du roi Sapor II, sur l’ordre de l’Archimage Arssag, il fut arrêté et par trois fois roué de coups de bâton avec une telle cruauté que les bourreaux, jugeant qu’il était déjà mort, le laissèrent gisant sur place. La nuit suivante, des chrétiens le portèrent dans sa maison, où il rendit l’âme. C’était en 345.

Dieu qui a instruit le monde entier par la parole de l ’Apôtre Saint Paul dont nous célébrons aujourd’hui la conversion, accordes-nous d ’aller vers toi en cherchant à lui ressembler, et d ’être, dans le monde, les témoins de ton Évangile. Par Jésus.
1ère lecture : Ac 22, 3-16
En ces jours-là, Paul dit au peuple: « Je suis Juif, né à Tarse en Cilicie, mais élevé ici dans cette ville, où, à l’école de Gamaliel, j’ai reçu une éducation strictement conforme à la Loi de nos pères; j’avais pour Dieu une ardeur jalouse, comme vous tous aujourd’hui. J’ai persécuté à mort ceux qui suivent le Chemin du Seigneur Jésus ; j’arrêtais hommes et femmes, et les jetais en prison ; le grand prêtre et tout le collège des anciens peuvent en témoigner. Ces derniers m’avaient donné des lettres pour nos frères de Damas où je me rendais : je devais ramener à Jérusalem, ceux de là-bas, enchaînés, pour qu’ils subissent leur châtiment. Donc, comme j’étais en route et que j’approchais de Damas, soudain vers midi, une grande lumière venant du ciel m’enveloppa de sa clarté. Je tombai sur le sol, et j’entendis une voix me dire : ‘Saul, Saul, pourquoi me persécuter ?’ Et moi je répondis : ‘Qui es-tu, Seigneur?– Je suis Jésus le Nazaréen, celui que tu persécutes.’ Ceux qui étaient avec moi virent la lumière, mais n’entendirent pas la voix de celui qui me parlait. Alors je dis : ‘Que dois-je faire, Seigneur ?’ Le Seigneur me répondit : ‘Relève-toi, va jusqu’à Damas, et là on te dira tout ce qu’il t’est prescrit de faire.’ Comme je n’y voyais plus rien, à cause de l’éclat de cette lumière, je me rendis à Damas, conduit par la main de mes compagnons. Or, Ananie, un homme religieux selon la Loi, à qui tous les Juifs résidant là rendaient un bon témoignage, vint se placer près de moi et me dit : ‘Saul, mon frère, retrouve la vue.’ Et moi, au même instant, je retrouvai la vue, et je le vis. Il me dit encore : ‘Le Dieu de nos pères t’a destiné à connaître sa volonté, à voir celui qui est le Juste et à entendre la voix qui sort de sa bouche. Car tu seras pour lui, devant tous les hommes, le témoin de ce que tu as vu et entendu. Et maintenant, pourquoi tarder ? Lève-toi et reçois le baptême, sois lavé de tes péchés en invoquant son nom.’

Que cette communion, Seigneur notre Dieu, entretienne en nous la charité qui brûlait au cœur de l’Apôtre Paul et lui donnait un souci passioné de toutes les Eglises. Par Jésus.
Méditation
À la question « qui es-tu ? » de Paul succède celle du « que dois-je faire?». La connaissance du Christ appelle la prise en compte de la mission à laquelle il nous appelle. La page de l’Évangile se charge d’éclairer notre lanterne à propos. On croit en vue du salut. Être sur le chemin du salut, c’est travailler à ne plus faire place aux démons dans sa vie, c’est parler le langage de l’amour dont l’écho est toujours nouveau, c’est ne plus être vulnérable au poison du mal, c’est apporter soulagement et guérison aux âmes en peine.

Jesus began to teach by the lakeside, but such a huge crowd gathered round him that he got into a boat on the lake and sat there. The people were all along the shore, at the water’s edge. He taught them many things in parables, and in the course of his teaching he said to them, ‘Listen! Imagine a sower going out to sow. Now it happened that, as he sowed, some of the seed fell on the edge of the path, and the birds came and ate it up. Some seed fell on rocky ground where it found little soil and sprang up straightaway, because there was no depth of earth; and when the sun came up it was scorched and, not having any roots, it withered away. Some seed fell into thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it, and it produced no crop. And some seeds fell into rich soil and, growing tall and strong, produced crop; and yielded thirty, sixty, even a hundredfold.’ And he said, ‘Listen, anyone who has ears to hear!’ When he was alone, the Twelve, together with the others who formed his company, asked what the parables meant. He told them, ‘The secret of the kingdom of God is given to you, but to those who are outside everything comes in parables, so that they may see and see again, but not perceive; may hear and hear again, but not understand; otherwise they might be converted and be forgiven.’ He said to them, ‘Do you not understand this parable? Then how will you understand any of the parables? What the sower is sowing is the word. Those on the edge of the path where the word is sown are people who have no sooner heard it than Satan comes and carries away the word that was sown in them. Similarly, those who receive the seed on patches of rock are people who, when first they hear the word, welcome it at once with joy. But they have no root in them, they do not last; should some trial come, or some persecution on account of the word, they fall away at once. Then there are others who receive the seed in thorns. These have heard the word, but the worries of this world, the lure of riches and all the other passions come in to choke the word, and so it produces nothing. And there are those who have received the seed in rich soil: they hear the word and accept it and yield a harvest, thirty and sixty and a hundredfold.’

Through this saving sacrifice which we offer you, O Lord, kindle in our hearts that divine fire of the Holy Spirit with which you wonderfully inflamed the most gentle soul of Saint Francis de Sales. Through Christ our Lord.

Behold a faithful and prudent steward to give them their allowance of food at the proper time.
Prayer after Communion
Grant, we pray, almighty God, that through the Sacrament we have received, we may imitate on earth the charity and meekness of Saint Francis de Sales and so attain like him the glory of heaven. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
Jesus uses the parable of the sower to depict God’s action of writing God’s Word in the hearts and minds of his people. The response rate is sliding as some of the Word shrivels and bears no fruit, while others are scanty, average, and abundant. The Word is abundant, even superabundant, but environmental, social, and attitudinal factors are involved. This combination of factors, along with the varying attitudes and dispositions, creates a disparity in productivity. Every hearer of God’s Word must fall within at least one of the categories. It is also possible to be the rich soil! The rich soil is a metaphor for how God made human beings to be good hearers of the Word. There is a possibility that we will experience imperfections, yet we cannot circumvent God’s Word. The Word is capable of penetrating not just our bodies but also our spirits.

(1567-1622) il étudie à Paris et à Padoue. Ordonné prêtre, il est prédicateur du Chabbais, et ramène cette région à la foi catholique. Son zèle apostolique lui valut d’être choisi comme évêque de Genève, en résidence à Annecy. Il fonda, avec Sainte Jeanne de Chantal, l’Ordre de la Visitation. Directeur spirituel d’une douceur exigeante ; il rappela aux laïcs chrétiens qu’ils ont tous la vocation à la perfection évangélique. Sa parole captivait ses auditoires, et ses écrits, première grande œuvre de théologie catholique en langue française, le firent proclamer docteur de l’Eglise par Pie XI. Il est le patron des écrivains et de la presse catholique.

Cette nuit-là, la parole du Seigneur fut adressée à Nathan : « Va dire à mon serviteur David : Ainsi parle le Seigneur: Est-ce toi qui me bâtiras une maison pour que j’y habite ? Depuis le jour où j’ai fait monter d’Égypte les fils d’Israël et jusqu’à ce jour, je n’ai jamais habité dans une maison ; j’ai été comme un voyageur, sous la tente qui était ma demeure. Pendant tout le temps où j’étais comme un voyageur parmi tous les fils d’Israël, ai-je demandé à un seul des juges que j’avais institués pasteurs de mon peuple Israël : “Pourquoi ne m’avez-vous pas bâti une maison de cèdre ?” Tu diras donc à mon serviteur David : Ainsi parle le Seigneur de l’univers: C’est moi qui t’ai pris au pâturage, derrière le troupeau, pour que tu sois le chef de mon peuple Israël. J’ai été avec toi partout où tu es allé, j’ai abattu devant toi tous tes ennemis. Je t’ai fait un nom aussi grand que celui des plus grands de la terre. Je fixerai en ce lieu mon peuple Israël, je l’y planterai, il s’y établira et ne tremblera plus, et les méchants ne viendront plus l’humilier, comme ils l’ont fait autrefois, depuis le jour où j’ai institué des juges pour conduire mon peuple Israël. Oui, je t’ai accordé la tranquillité en te délivrant de tous tes ennemis. Le Seigneur t’annonce qu’il te fera lui-même une maison. Quand tes jours seront accomplis et que tu reposeras auprès de tes pères, je te susciterai dans ta descendance un successeur, qui naîtra de toi, et je rendrai stable sa royauté.C’est lui qui bâtira une maison pour mon nom, et je rendrai stable pour toujours son trône royal. Moi, je serai pour lui un père; et lui sera pour moi un fils. S’il fait le mal, je le corrigerai avec le bâton, à la manière humaine, je le frapperai comme font les hommes. Mais ma fidélité ne lui sera pas retirée, comme je l’ai retirée à Saül que j’ai écarté de devant toi. Ta maison et ta royauté subsisteront toujours devant moi, ton trône sera stable pour toujours. » Toutes ces paroles, toute cette vision, Nathan les rapporta fidèlement à David.

Il était sur la mer, et toute la foule était près de la mer, sur le rivage. Il leur enseignait beaucoup de choses en paraboles, et dans son enseignement il leur disait: «Écoutez! Voici que le semeur sortit pour semer. Comme il semait, du grain est tombé au bord du chemin ; les oiseaux sont venus et ils ont tout mangé. Du grain est tombé aussi sur du sol pierreux, où il n’avait pas beaucoup de terre; il a levé aussitôt, parce que la terre était peu profonde; et lorsque le soleil s’est levé, ce grain a brûlé et, faute de racines, il a séché. Du grain est tombé aussi dans les ronces, les ronces ont poussé, l’ont étouffé, et il n’a pas donné de fruit. Alors, comment comprendrez-vous toutes les paraboles? Le semeur sème la Parole. Il y a ceux qui sont au bord du chemin où la Parole est semée: quand ils l’entendent, Satan vient aussitôt et enlève la Parole semée en eux. Et de même, il y a ceux qui ont reçu la semence dans les endroits pierreux: ceux-là, quand ils entendent la Parole, ils la reçoivent aussitôt avec joie; mais ils n’ont pas en eux de racine, ce sont les gens d’un moment; que vienne la détresse ou la persécution à cause de la Parole, ils trébuchent aussitôt. Et il y en a d’autres qui ont reçu la semence dans les ronces: ceux-ci entendent la Parole, mais les soucis du monde, la séduction de la richesse et toutes les autres convoitises les envahissent et étouffent la Parole, qui ne donne pas de fruit. Et il y a ceux qui ont reçu la semence dans la bonne terre: ceux-là entendent la Parole, ils l’accueillent, et ils portent du fruit : trente, soixante, cent, pour un.»

Dans l’enseignement qu’il nous donne à travers la parole du grain dans cette page d’Évangile de ce jour, l’amour est la clef de compréhension du mystère: « Écoutez ! ». De la qualité d’écoute du cœur découle la fortune réservée à la Parole de Dieu en l’homme. C’est dommage que statistiquement, selon les termes de l’extrait évangélique, seul un quart de personnes arrivent à porter du fruit. Occasion est donnée à chacun de chercher ce qui empêche son cœur d’être fertile à la Parole de Dieu. De quel genre de terre est mon cœur ?

En ces jours-là, David fit monter l’arche de Dieu de la maison d’Obed-Édom jusqu’à la Cité de David, au milieu des cris de joie. Quand les porteurs de l’Arche eurent avancé de six pas, il offrit en sacrifice un taureau et un veau gras. David, vêtu d’un pagne de lin, dansait devant le Seigneur, en tournoyant de toutes ses forces. David et tout le peuple d’Israël firent monter l’arche du Seigneur parmi les ovations, au son du cor. Ils amenèrent donc l’arche du Seigneur et l’installèrent à sa place, au milieu de la tente que David avait dressée pour elle. Puis il offrit devant le Seigneur des holocaustes et des sacrifices de paix. Quand David eut achevé d’offrir les holocaustes et les sacrifices de paix, il bénit le peuple au nom du Seigneur des armées. Il fit une distribution à tout le peuple, à la foule entière des Israélites, hommes et femmes : pour chacun une galette de pain, un morceau de rôti et un gâteau de raisins. Ensuite tout le monde s’en retourna chacun chez soi.

Meditation
Some people erroneously consider Jesus not caring so much for his mother and extended family. However, he demonstrates here that he has not come to set up a kingdom built on blood and lineage but on truth and the spirit. Studies have shown that we naturally gravitate to the familiar – our race, our ethnic group, and our family members. However, therein lies our Achilles heel, as that is where, unguarded, racism, tribalism and nepotism breed. When Jesus was interrupted somehow embarrassingly from his preaching to attend to his family, he used the opportunity to let his listeners know the kind of faith family he had come to establish: those who do the will of God. Humanity’s only sustainable pathway is building a society where merit counts. There is no peace without justice.

« Si un royaume est divisé contre lui-même, ce royaume ne peut pas tenir ». Si, par analogie, nous appliquons cette vérité à notre condition chrétienne, la question serait de savoir si nous sommes entiers à la suite du Christ ou si nous sommes plutôt en écartèlement sur plusieurs sollicitations spirituelles ? Cette dernière attitude est contriste l’Esprit Saint et ne peut nous apporter sérénité et épanouissement. Dieu est Dieu, il ne faut pas l’acoquiner avec ce qui n’est pas Dieu ou qui n’est pas de lui.

Meditation
Today’s Gospel responds to the scribes’ criticism of Jesus, which reads, “Beelzebul is in him’… ‘It is through the prince of devils that he casts devils out.” Jesus corrects their illogical thinking by asking, “How can Satan drive out Satan? A house that is split up against itself will not be able to stand. The hostility of the religious establishment in Jesus’ day is the subject of this chapter of Mark’s Gospel. This conflict frequently appears in the Gospel and develops into a motif leading to his tragic death. In these encounters, Jesus can fend off the scribes’ and Pharisees’ enmity.
The only way to triumph over the enemy is to remain united with Jesus.

Meditation
Christ came to earth to free humanity from sin and restore our relationship with God. This act of love explains to us the permanence of God’s love for us humans. After the fall of our first parents, Adam and Eve, God did not abandon us. God promised from the beginning to save humanity from the evil one. In the Gospel, God calls us to repent and change. God is faithful, and this call seems always to be coming to us and inviting a response. Today we are to consider our call to follow Jesus and proclaim the kingdom of God. God is always faithful to us in unconditional love that keeps gently pulling us towards Godself with the sole requirement: “The kingdom of God is close at hand. Repent, and believe the Good News” In other words, Jesus is telling you and me, “repent, believe and embrace this good news of my unconditional love for you.”
