Father Cyprian Michael Iwene Tansi was born in Nigeria in 1903. He was brought up by the Holy Ghost Fathers (Spiritans) and trained as a teacher and a catechist. Later he decided to join the seminary and in 1937 he was ordained a priest. In 1950 he left his Diocese in order to go to England where he joined the Cistercian Abbey of Mount St Bernard, near Nottingham. He had been singled out as the ideal candidate to be trained in England and then return to establish a Trappist Monastery in the Diocese of Onitsha in Nigeria. Fr Tansi lived the monastic life with great faith and humility.

O God, in the priest Blessed Cyprian Michael Iwene Tansi you joined the apostolic zeal of a pastor to the way of life of a monk. Grant us by his intercession that persevering in prayer, we seek untiringly the coming of your kingdom. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son and our elder brother, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
First reading : 2 Samuel 1:1-4,11-12,17,19,23-27
David returned from his rout of the Amalekites and spent two days in Ziklag. On the third day a man came from the camp where Saul had been, his garments torn and earth on his head. When he came to David, he fell to the ground and did homage. ‘Where do you come from?’ David asked him. ‘I have escaped from the Israelite camp’ he said. David said to him, ‘What happened? Tell me.’ He replied, ‘The people have fled from the battlefield and many of them have fallen. Saul and his son Jonathan are dead too.’ Then David took hold of his garments and tore them, and all the men with him did the same. They mourned and wept and fasted until the evening for Saul and his son Jonathan, for the people of The Lord and for the House of Israel, because they had fallen by the sword. Then David made this lament over Saul and his son Jonathan. Alas, the glory of Israel has been slain on your heights! How did the heroes fall? Saul and Jonathan loved and lovely, neither in life, nor in death, were divided. Swifter than eagles were they, stronger were they than lions. O daughters of Israel, weep for Saul who clothed you in scarlet and fine linen, who set brooches of gold on your garments. How did the heroes fall in the thick of the battle? O Jonathan, in your death I am stricken, I am desolate for you, Jonathan my brother. Very dear to me you were, your love to me more wonderful than the love of a woman. Meditation
Some students secondary and high school, who try to be prayerful and refuse to indulge themselves in useless activities, get ridiculed by their peers. Some are nicknamed “Holy Maria” or “St Joseph”. Jesus experienced more than ridicule. He was greatly misunderstood. Even his own family thought he was out of his mind. This is because he was disturbingly different: healing the sick, forgiving sinners, associating with outcasts, spending whole nights at prayer. He didn’t have any home of his own. He claimed God as his Father and he challenged the religious leaders of his day. He taught people to love their enemies and to do good to those who hurt them. He calls us to take the lowest place where the world encourages us to strive for success and praise. He basically goes against the current by the call to holiness. The qualities he seeks to form in us go against the world and expose us to ridicule. We are blessed if we have a share in the ridicule he experienced.

Raconte-le-moi ! » L’homme répondit : « Le peuple s’est enfui du champ de bataille ; beaucoup d’entre eux sont tombés et sont morts. Et même Saül et son fils Jonathan sont morts ! » Alors David arracha et déchira ses vêtements, et tous les hommes qui étaient avec lui firent de même. Ils se lamentèrent, pleurèrent et jeûnèrent jusqu’au soir, à cause de Saül et de son fils Jonathan, à cause du peuple du Seigneur et de la maison d’Israël, parce qu’ils étaient tombés par l’épée. Alors David chanta cette lamentation : « Ta fierté, Israël, transpercée sur tes hauteurs ! Comment sont-ils tombés, les héros? Saül et Jonathan, aimables, pleins de charme, ni dans la vie ni dans la mort ne furent séparés, plus rapides que les aigles, plus vaillants que les lions. Filles d’Israël, pleurez sur Saül : il vous revêtait de pourpre somptueuse et rehaussait de joyaux d’or vos vêtements. Comment sont-ils tombés, les héros, au milieu du combat ? Jonathan, transpercé sur les hauteurs ! J’ai le cœur serré à cause de toi, mon frère Jonathan. Tu étais plein d’affection pour moi, et ton amitié pour moi était merveille plus grande que l’amour des femmes ! Comment sont-ils tombés, les héros ? Comment ont-elles disparu, les armes du combat? »

Surprenant David ! Il s’attriste de la mort d’un fils rebelle et sanguinaire! Avouons qu’à sa place, nous nous serions réjouis de la mort d’un tel fils devenu ennemi. Il y avait déjà en David le grain de folie qui a caractérisé Jésus, lui qui nous fait comprendre que toute vie est sacrée ; lui qui, sans limite de générosité sur son temps et sur les sacrifices consentis, s’est mis à notre service, consentant mourir pour nous alors que nous étions pécheurs. Dieu, fais-nous revenir à cet essentiel de la foi et de l’amour.

Blessed Andrew was born at Peschiera, Italy in 1400 and entered the Dominican Order in a reformed priory of the Congregation of Lombardy. Itinerant preaching was his life’s ministry, especially in the Valtelline region of the Italian Alps where he labored for forty- five years. Traveling on foot and living with the poor, he reconciled many to Christ. He died at the priory of Morbegno on January 18, 1485.

Meditation
Jesus picked some of the most unlikely folks to convert the world. If it were left to us to choose the first apostles, we might have been put off by the apparent lack of qualification of simple fishermen. But Jesus saw beyond their frailties and rough exteriors. He saw in these uncultured, uneducated working men hearts that truly wanted to serve God. He called them to be with him. Transformed by his Spirit they went out boldly to proclaim the name of Jesus. Jesus is calling each of us. If we agree to spend time enough with him he will empower us as he did the apostles.

Il fut canonisé en 1158 par la voix populaire. Considéré comme un martyr, il est patron de la Finlande.

Alors le cœur lui battit d’avoir coupé le pan du manteau de Saül. Il dit à ses hommes : « Que le Seigneur me préserve de faire une chose pareille à mon maître, qui a reçu l’onction du Seigneur : porter la main sur lui, qui est le messie du Seigneur.» Par ses paroles, David retint ses hommes. Il leur interdit de se jeter sur Saül. Alors Saül quitta la grotte et continua sa route. David se leva, sortit de la grotte, et lui cria: «Mon seigneur le roi!» Saül regarda derrière lui. David s’inclina jusqu’à terre et se prosterna, puis il lui cria: «Pourquoi écoutes-tu les gens qui te disent: “David te veut du mal”? Aujourd’hui même, tes yeux ont vu comment le Seigneur t’avait livré entre mes mains dans la grotte; pourtant, j’ai refusé de te tuer, je t’ai épargné et j’ai dit: “Je ne porterai pas la main sur mon seigneur le roi qui a reçu l’onction du Seigneur.” Regarde, père, regarde donc: voici dans ma main le pan de ton manteau. Puisque j’ai pu le couper, et que pourtant je ne t’ai pas tué, reconnais qu’il n’y a en moi ni méchanceté ni révolte. Je n’ai pas commis de faute contre toi, alors que toi, tu traques ma vie pour me l’enlever. C’est le Seigneur qui sera juge entre toi et moi, c’est le Seigneur qui me vengera de toi, mais ma main ne te touchera pas ! Comme dit le vieux proverbe: “Des méchants sort la méchanceté.” C’est pourquoi ma main ne te touchera pas. Après qui donc le roi d’Israël s’est-il mis en campagne ? Après qui cours-tu donc? Que le Seigneur soit notre arbitre, qu’il juge entre toi et moi, qu’il examine et défende ma cause, et qu’il me rende justice, en me délivrant de ta main!» Lorsque David eut fini de parler, Saül s’écria: «Est-ce bien ta voix que j’entends, mon fils David?» Et Saül se mit à crier et à pleurer. Puis il dit à David: «Toi, tu es juste, et plus que moi : car toi, tu m’as fait du bien, et moi, je t’ai fait du mal. Aujourd’hui tu as montré toute ta bonté envers moi: le Seigneur m’avait livré entre tes mains, et tu ne m’as pas tué! Quand un homme surprend son ennemi, va-t-il le laisser partir tranquillement? Donc, il établit les Douze: Pierre – c’est le nom qu’il donna à Simon –, Jacques, fils de Zébédée, et Jean, le frère de Jacques – il leur donna le nom de «Boanerguès», c’est-à-dire: «Fils du tonnerre» – André, Philippe, Barthélemy, Matthieu, Thomas, Jacques, fils d’Alphée, Thaddée, Simon le Zélote, et Judas Iscariote, celui-là même qui le livra.

Combien d’entre-nous, en lieu et place de David, ne l’aurait pas fait? Pensons-nous vraiment que nous avons été appelés par Jésus, après les apôtres, pour ne rien changer de nos penchants humains mauvais à tendance conservatrice égoïste ? Non, il nous a appelés pour que nous expurgions de nos vies les tendances meurtrières, vengeresses ou des insensibilités qui font le lit au démon dans notre monde. C’est pour être amour que Dieu nous a appelés.

Bishop of Tours, France. A senator at Tours, he was initially married, supposedly to a most unpleasant wife. Named bishop of the city in 488, he was forced to leave the see in 496 by the Arian Visigoths, and went to Spain. He died perhaps in Toulouse, or in Spain, possibly as a martyr.

Saul told Jonathan his son and all his servants of his intention to kill David. Now Jonathan, Saul’s son, held David in great affection; and so Jonathan warned David; ‘My father Saul is looking for a way to kill you,’ he said ‘so be on your guard tomorrow morning; hide away in some secret place. Then I will go out and keep my father company in the fields where you are hiding, and will talk to my father about you; I will find out what the situation is and let you know.’ So Jonathan spoke well of David to Saul his father; he said, ‘Let not the king sin against his servant David, for he has not sinned against you, and what he has done has been greatly to your advantage. He took his life in his hands when he killed the Philistine, and the Lord brought about a great victory for all Israel. You saw it yourself and rejoiced; why then sin against innocent blood in killing David without cause?’ Saul was impressed by Jonathan’s words and took an oath, ‘As the Lord lives, I will not kill him.’ Jonathan called David and told him all these things. Then Jonathan brought him to Saul, and David attended on him as before.

Jesus withdrew with his disciples to the lakeside, and great crowds from Galilee followed him. From Judaea, Jerusalem, Idumaea, Transjordania and the region of Tyre and Sidon, great numbers who had heard of all he was doing came to him. And he asked his disciples to have a boat ready for him because of the crowd, to keep him from being crushed. For he had cured so many that all who were afflicted in any way were crowding forward to touch him. And the unclean spirits, whenever they saw him, would fall down before him and shout, ‘You are the Son of God!’ But he warned them strongly not to make him known.

Pour on us, O Lord, the Spirit of your love, and in your kindness make those you have nourished by this one heavenly Bread one in mind and heart. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
Jesus captivated the crowds. Huge crowds urgently sought him. He attracted crowds for a simple reason. He cared. They recognised his compassion and affection for everyone—the sick, the lost, the lonely, the homeless, the needy — and he never turned anyone away. Look at how people rush around him to touch him thinking he will give them power. People believed Jesus wanted to heal body, mind, and spirit and had time for them. People ran to Jesus because those who had experienced his healing love testified that Messiah had come to answer humanity’s needs and alleviate their burden. Even demons recognise him now. They did so because they knew and feared him. Jesus rejected their confession because accepting Jesus without repentance and transformation is worthless to God. Thus, Jesus exposes himself as the Messiah who conquers evil and builds a spiritual kingdom. Sharing God’s favours and miracles will draw many to Jesus today.

À l’intérieur du monastère, elle cherchait les tâches les plus rudes et les plus humbles. De sa propre initiative, elle s’imposait une rude ascèse.

1 lecture : 1 S 18, 6-9 ; 19, 1-7
En ces jours-là, au retour de l’armée, lorsque David revint après avoir tué le Philistin, les femmes sortirent de toutes les villes d’Israël à la rencontre du roi Saül pour chanter et danser au son des tambourins, des cris de joie et des cymbales. Les femmes dansaient en se renvoyant ce refrain: «Saül a tué ses milliers, et David, ses dizaines de milliers. » Saül le prit très mal et fut très irrité. Il disait: «À David on attribue les dizaines de milliers, et à moi les milliers ; il ne lui manque plus que la royauté!» Depuis ce jour-là, Saül regardait David avec méfiance. Saül dit à son fils Jonathan et à tous ses serviteurs son intention de faire mourir David. Mais Jonathan, le fils de Saül, aimait beaucoup David et il alla le prévenir : « Mon père Saül cherche à te faire mourir. Demain matin, sois sur tes gardes, mets-toi à l’abri, dissimule-toi. Moi, je sortirai et je me tiendrai à côté de mon père dans le champ où tu seras. Je parlerai de toi à mon père, je verrai ce qu’il en est et je te le ferai savoir. » Jonathan fit à son père Saül l’éloge de David; il dit : « Que le roi ne commette pas de faute contre son serviteur David, car lui n’a commis aucune faute envers toi. Au contraire, ses exploits sont une très bonne chose pour toi. Il a risqué sa vie, il a frappé à mort Goliath le Philistin, et le Seigneur a donné une grande victoire à tout Israël : tu l’as vu et tu en as été heureux. Pourquoi donc commettre une faute contre la vie d’un innocent, en faisant mourir David sans motif?» Saül écouta Jonathan et fit ce serment : « Par le Seigneur vivant, il ne sera pas mis à mort ! » Alors Jonathan appela David et lui répéta tout ce que le roi avait dit. Puis il le conduisit à Saül, et David reprit sa place comme avant.

En ce temps-là, Jésus se retira avec ses disciples près de la mer, et une grande multitude de gens, venus de la Galilée, le suivirent. De Judée, de Jérusalem, d’Idumée, de Transjordanie, et de la région de Tyr et de Sidon vinrent aussi à lui une multitude de gens qui avaient entendu parler de ce qu’il faisait. Il dit à ses disciples de tenir une barque à sa disposition pour que la foule ne l’écrase pas. Car il avait fait beaucoup de guérisons, si bien que tous ceux qui souffraient de quelque mal se précipitaient sur lui pour le toucher. Et lorsque les esprits impurs le voyaient, ils se jetaient à ses pieds et criaient: «Toi, tu es le Fils de Dieu!» Mais il leur défendait vivement de le faire connaître.

Seigneur, Accorde-nous la grace de vraiment participer à cette eucharistie ; car chaque fois qu’est célébré ce sacrifice en mémorial, c’est l’œuvre de notre Rédemption qui s’accomplit, Par Jésus,

Méditation
Le roi Saül qui ne supporte pas d’être ombragé par les mérites de David. Ceci est typique à nos différents cercles de pouvoir, temporel comme spirituel. A contrario, la contemplation de Jésus dans la page d’Évangile brille par un fort contraste : il recherche et oeuvre plutôt pour le bien-être des hommes. À l’instar de Jonathan, laissons l’amour nous faire prendre pieds sur les chemins de la loyauté à Dieu en cultivant la vérité et l’équité.

St Antony is the originator of the monastic life. He was born in Egypt: when his parents died, he listened to the words of the Gospel and gave all his belongings to the poor. He lived to be over a hundred years old, and died in 356.

O God, who brought the Abbot Saint Anthony to serve you by a wondrous way of life in the desert, grant, through his intercession, that, denying ourselves, we may always love you above all things. First reading : 1 Samuel 17: 32-33, 37, 40-51
David said to Saul, ‘Let no-one lose heart on his account; your servant will go and fight the Philistine.’ But Saul answered David, ‘You cannot go and fight the Philistine; you are only a boy and he has been a warrior from his youth.’ ‘The Lord who rescued me from the claws of lion and bear’ David said ‘will rescue me from the power of this Philistine.’ Then Saul said to David, ‘Go, and the Lord be with you!’ He took his staff in his hand, picked five smooth stones from the river bed, put them in his shepherd’s bag, in his pouch, and with his sling in his hand he went to meet the Philistine. Gospel : Mark 3:1-6

He said to the man with the withered hand, ‘Stand up out in the middle!’ Then he said to them, ‘Is it against the law on the sabbath day to do good, or to do evil; to save life, or to kill?’ But they said nothing. Then, grieved to find them so obstinate, he looked angrily round at them, and said to the man, ‘Stretch out your hand.’ He stretched it out and his hand was better. The Pharisees went out and at once began to plot with the Herodians against him, discussing how to destroy him.

May these offerings of our service, placed on your altar in commemoration of Saint Anthony, be acceptable to you, O Lord, we pray, and grant that, released from earthly attachments, we may have our riches in you alone. Through Christ our Lord.

Prayer after Communion
Nourished for our healing by your Sacraments, O Lord, may we escape every snare of the enemy unharmed, just as by your grace Saint Anthony won glorious victories over the powers of darkness. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
In the Gospel, we see the Pharisees whose understanding of religion and scrupulous observance of the Sabbath code deprives healing and life of their people. In Jewish law, it was permitted to heal on the Sabbath day if life was threatened. But the man with the paralysed hand was not in any danger of death, so Jesus’ opponents could accuse him of breaking the law. However, the law was originally meant to help people to do God’s will. By Jesus’ time a multitude of traditions had made the law more prohibitive. By interpreting the law so strictly like the Pharisees did, Jesus’ opponents missed the opportunity to do good. And that is tantamount to doing evil! Properly interpreted the law cannot stand in the way of God’s benefits. Jesus gave his opponents a sign of God’s power by healing the man.

SAINT ANTOINE, ABBÉ MÉMOIRE

« Si tu veux être parfait, va, vends tout ce que tu as ; puis viens, et suis-moi ! » A cet appel de l’Évangile, entendu au cours de la liturgie, Antoine voulut répondre aussitôt : il se dépouilla de ses biens et partit dans le désert de Haute-Égypte. Malgré le calme et la solitude, sa recherche de la perfection chrétienne n’alla pas sans difficulté. Il quitta le désert en 311 pour venir à Alexandrie témoigner, contre l’hérésie arienne, de sa foi en Jésus Fils de Dieu. Son rayonnement fut décuplé grâce à la biographie écrite de son vivant par S. Athanase : la ‘’Vie de S. Antoine’’. Le père des moines d’Égypte mourut plus que centenaire en 356.

Le juste grandira comme un palmier, il s’étendra comme un cèdre du Liban ; transplanté dans les parvis du Seigneur, il grandira dans la maison de notre Dieu.

Moi, ton serviteur, j’irai me battre avec lui. » Saül répondit à David : «Tu ne peux pas marcher contre ce Philistin pour lutter avec lui, car tu n’es qu’un enfant, et lui, c’est un homme de guerre depuis sa jeunesse. » David insista : « Le Seigneur, qui m’a délivré des griffes du lion et de l’ours, me délivrera des mains de ce Philistin. » Alors Saül lui dit : « Va, et que le Seigneur soit avec toi ! » David prit en main son bâton, il se choisit dans le torrent cinq cailloux bien lisses et les mit dans son sac de berger, dans une poche ; puis, la fronde à la main, il s’avança vers le Philistin. Le Philistin se mit en marche et, précédé de son porte-bouclier, approcha de David. Lorsqu’il le vit, il le regarda avec mépris car c’était un jeune garçon; il était roux et de belle apparence. Le Philistin lui dit : « Suis-je donc un chien, pour que tu viennes contre moi avec un bâton ? » Puis il le maudit en invoquant ses dieux. Il dit à David: « Viens vers moi, que je te donne en pâture aux oiseaux du ciel et aux bêtes sauvages ! » David lui répondit: «Tu viens contre moi avec épée, lance et javelot, mais moi, je viens contre toi avec le nom du Seigneur des armées, le Dieu des troupes d’Israël que tu as défié. Toute la terre saura qu’il y a un Dieu pour Israël, et tous ces gens rassemblés sauront que le Seigneur ne donne la victoire ni par l’épée ni par la lance, mais que le Seigneur est maître du combat, et qu’il vous livre entre nos mains. » Goliath s’était dressé, s’était mis en marche et s’approchait à la rencontre de David. Celui-ci s’élança et courut vers les lignes des ennemis à la rencontre du Philistin. Il plongea la main dans son sac, et en retira un caillou qu’il lança avec sa fronde. Il atteignit le Philistin au front, le caillou s’y enfonça, et Goliath tomba face contre terre. Ainsi David triompha du Philistin avec une fronde et un caillou: quand il frappa le Philistin et le mit à mort, il n’avait pas d’épée à la main. Mais David courut ; arrivé près du Philistin, il lui prit son épée, qu’il tira du fourreau, et le tua en lui coupant la tête. Quand les Philistins virent que leur héros était mort, ils prirent la fuite.

Évangile : Mc 3, 1-6
En ce temps-là, Jésus entra dans une synagogue; il y avait là un homme dont la main était atrophiée. On observait Jésus pour voir s’il le guérirait le jour du sabbat. C’était afin de pouvoir l’accuser. Il dit à l’homme qui avait la main atrophiée: « Lève-toi, viens au milieu. » Et s’adressant aux autres : « Est-il permis, le jour du sabbat, de faire le bien ou de faire le mal ? de sauver une vie ou de tuer ? » Mais eux se taisaient. Alors, promenant sur eux un regard de colère, navré de l’endurcissement de leurs cœurs, il dit à l’homme : «Étends la main. » Il l’étendit, et sa main redevint normale. Une fois sortis, les pharisiens se réunirent en conseil avec les partisans d’Hérode contre Jésus, pour voir comment le faire périr.

Accepte, Seigneur, comme un hommage de tes serviteurs l’offrande que nous déposons sur ton autel en cette fête de saint Antoine ; permets qu’en nous détachant des biens de la terre nous n’ayons d’autres richesses que toi. Par Jésus.

Méditation
Ce que David fit contre Goliath, mieux ce que Dieu fit à travers David pour désillusionner la puissance philistine, peut encore être fait aujourd’hui par notre truchement pour confondre les géants spirituels qui infestent le monde et qui le leste de sa paix, à la faveur de l’endurcissement de nos cœurs. Cultivons plutôt des dispositions adéquates pour que nous ne fassions plus taire Jésus. Là où Jésus est effectivement présent, le mal ne peut ni s’épanouir ni avoir le dernier mot. Certaines choses de la vie sont comme elles sont à cause de ce que nous sommes nous-mêmes.

Meditation
Jesus once again reminds the Pharisees of what true religion consists of. It is not by merely meticulously keeping the rules and regulations of the Church. Nor is it just in attending worship on Sundays and refraining from work. Nor is it in just saying my prayers and reading my bible daily. Does it mean that all those things are unnecessary? Not at all! It simply means that love, compassion, forgiveness and service are at the heart of Christianity. And when these things are lacking, our religious practices become sterile. The Lord makes the same point in the First Reading when he reminds Samuel that he does not judge by physical appearance but looks at the heart. Therein lies the true devotion to God, which manifests itself in service to the brethren – especially to the needy, the abandoned and the downtrodden. How can one call himself a Christian when he leaves a wounded man on the road while hurrying to Church when he can assist? When that sacred period is used to attend to an emergency that saves a life, it demonstrates that the

Natif de Rome, il fut le 30e pape (308-309). Il se consacra à la réorganisation de l’Église ravagée par la persécution de Dioclétien. Il géra les cas des chrétiens apostats lors de la persécution de Dèce. Il n’exigea d’eux qu’un acte de pénitence. Ce qui lui valut une animosité de plusieurs chrétiens qui le dénoncèrent à l’empereur. Il fut condamné à être esclave, chargé d’entretenir des écuries dans sa propre église.

Que toute la terre se prosterne devant toi : Seigneur, qu’elle chante pour toi, qu’elle chante à la gloire de ton nom, Dieu très-haut !
Prière d’ouverture
Dieu éternel et tout-puissant, qui régis l’univers du ciel et de la terre: Exauce, en ta bonté, les prières de ton peuple et fais à notre temps la grâce de la paix. Par Jésus.
1ère lecture : 1 S 16, 1-13
En ces jours-là, le Seigneur dit à Samuel : « Combien de temps encore seras-tu en deuil à cause de Saül ? Je l’ai rejeté pour qu’il ne règne plus sur Israël. Prends une corne que tu rempliras d’huile, et pars! Je t’envoie auprès de Jessé de Bethléem, car j’ai vu parmi ses fils mon roi. » Samuel répondit: «Comment faire ? Saül va le savoir, et il me tuera. » Le Seigneur reprit: «Emmène avec toi une génisse, et tu diras que tu viens offrir un sacrifice au Seigneur. Tu convoqueras Jessé au sacrifice ; je t’indiquerai moi-même ce que tu dois faire et tu me consacreras par l’onction celui que je te désignerai. » Samuel fit ce qu’avait dit le Seigneur. Quand il parvint à Bethléem, les anciens de la ville allèrent à sa rencontre en tremblant, et demandèrent: «Est-ce pour la paix que tu viens?» Samuel répondit : « Oui, pour la paix. Je suis venu offrir un sacrifice au Seigneur. Purifiez-vous, et vous viendrez avec moi au sacrifice.» Il purifia Jessé et ses fils, et les convoqua au sacrifice. Lorsqu’ils arrivèrent et que Samuel aperçut Éliab, il se dit : « Sûrement, c’est lui le messie, lui qui recevra l’onction du Seigneur ! » Mais le Seigneur dit à Samuel : « Ne considère pas son apparence ni sa haute taille, car je l’ai écarté. Dieu ne regarde pas comme les hommes : les hommes regardent l’apparence, mais le Seigneur regarde le cœur. » Jessé appela Abinadab et le présenta à Samuel, qui dit : « Ce n’est pas lui non plus que le Seigneur a choisi.» Jessé présenta Shamma, mais Samuel dit : « Ce n’est pas lui non plus que le Seigneur a choisi.» Jessé présenta ainsi à Samuel ses sept fils, et Samuel lui dit : «Le Seigneur n’a choisi aucun de ceux-là. » Alors Samuel dit à Jessé: «N’as-tu pas d’autres garçons?» Jessé répondit : « Il reste encore le plus jeune, il est en train de garder le troupeau. » Alors Samuel dit à Jessé : « Envoie-le chercher : nous ne nous mettrons pas à table tant qu’il ne sera pas arrivé. » Jessé le fit donc venir : le garçon était roux, il avait de beaux yeux, il était beau. Le Seigneur dit alors : « Lève-toi, donne-lui l’onction : c’est lui!» Samuel prit la corne pleine d’huile, et lui donna l’onction au milieu de ses frères. L’Esprit du Seigneur s’empara de David à partir de ce jour-là. Quant à Samuel, il se mit en route et s’en revint à Rama.
Psaume : 88 (89), 20, 21-22, 27-28
R/ J’ai trouvé David, mon serviteur
Autrefois, tu as parlé à tes amis: Dans une vision tu leur as dit: « J’ai donné mon appui à un homme d’élite, j’ai choisi dans ce peuple un jeune homme.
« J’ai trouvé David, mon serviteur, je l’ai sacré avec mon huile sainte; et ma main sera pour toujours avec lui, mon bras fortifiera son courage.
« Il me dira: Tu es mon Père, mon Dieu, mon roc et mon salut! Et moi, j’en ferai mon fils aîné, le plus grand des rois de la terre ! »
Acclamation
Alléluia, alléluia ! Que le Père de notre Seigneur Jésus Christ ouvre à sa lumière les yeux de notre cœur, pour que nous percevions l’espérance que donne son appel. Alléluia. (cf. Ep 1, 17-18)
Évangile : Mc 2, 23-28
Un jour de sabbat, Jésus marchait à travers les champs de blé; et ses disciples, chemin faisant, se mirent à arracher des épis. Les pharisiens lui disaient : « Regarde ce qu’ils font le jour du sabbat ! Cela n’est pas permis.» Et Jésus leur dit : « N’avez-vous jamais lu ce que fit David, lorsqu’il fut dans le besoin et qu’il eut faim, lui-même et ceux qui l’accompagnaient ? Au temps du grand prêtre Abiatar, il entra dans la maison de Dieu et mangea les pains de l’offrande que nul n’a le droit de manger, sinon les prêtres, et il en donna aussi à ceux qui l’accompagnaient.» Il leur disait encore : « Le sabbat a été fait pour l’homme, et non pas l’homme pour le sabbat. Voilà pourquoi le Fils de l’homme est maître, même du sabbat. »
Prière sur les offrandes
Seigneur, Accorde-nous la grace de vraiment participer à cette eucharistie ; car chaque fois qu’est célébré ce sacrifice en mémorial, c’est l’œuvre de notre Rédemption qui s’accomplit, Par Jésus,

Pour moi, Seigneur, tu as dressé la table, et ma coupe me remplit de joie,
Prière après la communion
Pénètre nous Seigneur de ton Esprit de charité afin que soit unis par ton amour ceux que tu as nourris d’un meme pain, par Jésus,
Méditation
Le cœur, tous les hommes en possèdent. Penché sur nous, Dieu regarde nos cœurs ; il recherche ceux qui lui sont ouverts et acquis, ceux que son amour a conquis et qui sont disposés à collaborer à son œuvre de salut. Avec quels cœurs nous tenons-nous devant Dieu aujourd’hui ? Avec quel cœur disons-nous le servir ? Rendre transparente la gloire de Dieu et se mettre au service de la vie, voilà ce qui importe.
