SAINT Jane Frances de Chantal,
Blessed isidore bakanja
She was born in Dijon, in France, in 1572. She married a nobleman called de Chantal, by whom she had six children whom she brought up in the faith. She founded the Order of the Visitation and guided it wisely. She died in 1641

Meditation
Jesus always looked for faith in people. With faith, anything is possible; faith is the confidence that God loves us. When we have a good relationship with someone, we spend a lot of time with that person, and trust is built and solidified. Let us look at the quality of our relationship with Jesus: do we really trust him? Do we spend much time with him? Lord, grant us the faith that moves mountains; mountains of inertia and apathy, fear and anxiety, selfishness and despair.

Bienheureux Isidore Bakanja
Béatifié le 24 avril 1994 pendant le premier Synode des évêques pour l’Afrique, Isidore Bakanja était catéchumène chez les pères Trappistes, à Mbandaka, au Zaïre, actuel Congo démocratique. Répugnant sa dévotion profonde au Christ le patron dont il était le domestique le fit battre à mort. Âgé de 29 ans, il rendit l’âme le 12 août 1909.

Méditation
Jésus recherche toujours en premier la foi chez les gens. Avec la foi, tout est possible ; la foi est la confiance que Dieu nous aime. Lorsque nous nourrissons une bonne relation avec quelqu’un, nous passons beaucoup de temps avec cette personne, et la confiance se construit et se solidifie. Examinons la qualité de notre relation avec Jésus : lui faisons-nous vraiment confiance ? Passons-nous beaucoup de temps en sa compagnie ? Seigneur, accorde-nous la foi qui déplace les montagnes ; montagnes d’inertie et d’apathie, de peur et d’anxiété, d’égoïsme et de désespoir.

sainte philomene
Touchée par l’exemple du Poverello, une jeune fille d’Assise offrit au Christ la fraîcheur de ses dix-huit ans et se confia à saint François, le dimanche des Rameaux 1212. Ce fut l’origine du second ordre franciscain, celui des Pauvres Dames ou Clarisses. Sœur Claire (1193-1253) allait diriger pendant quarante-deux ans le couvent de Saint-Damien à Assise, le premier de l’Ordre.

R/N’oubliez pas les exploits du Seigneur !
Nos pères ont tenté le Dieu Très-Haut, ils refusaient d’observer ses lois ; ils déviaient comme leurs pères, ils désertaient, trahissaient comme un arc infidèle.
Leurs hauts lieux le provoquaient, leurs idoles excitaient sa jalousie. Dieu a entendu, il s’emporte, il écarte tout à fait Israël.
Il laisse capturer sa gloire, et sa puissance par des mains ennemies. Il livre son peuple à l’épée, contre son héritage, il s’emporte.

Méditation
Nous sommes invités à marcher dans les pas du Christ. Comme lui, nous devons être prêts à prendre notre croix, quelle qu’elle soit, et à la porter à sa suite. Nous remarquons que Jésus dit à ses disciples de porter leur croix, pas la sienne. La croix sera différente pour chaque personne ; elle prend la forme d’une difficulté. Quelque chose qui n’est pas choisie mais qui est claire. Ce n’est qu’en unifiant les souffrances de nos vies à celle de Jésus que nous pouvons porter nos croix.

SAINT Clare,
saint Philomena
She was born at Assisi and came under the influence of Saint Francis. She left home at the age of 18 and, under Francis”s guidance, began a community that grew to become the order of the Poor Clares. Clare was a noted contemplative and a caring mother to her nuns. She died at Assisi in 1253.

Meditation
We are invited to walk in the steps of Christ. We must be willing to take up our cross like him, whatever it may be, and carry it as he did. We notice that Jesus tells his disciples to carry their cross, not his. The cross will be different for each person; it takes the form of a difficulty. Something that is not chosen but is clear. Only by unifying the sufferings of our lives with those of Jesus can we carry our crosses.

SAINT Laurence, Deacon and martyr
Laurence was one of the seven deacons of the Church of Rome and was executed on 10th August 258, four days after Sixtus II and his companions. He was probably a Spaniard from Toledo.
Entrance Antiphon
This is the blessed Lawrence who gave himself up for the treasure of the Church: for this he earned the suffering of martyrdom to ascend with joy to the Lord Jesus Christ.
Collect
O God, giver of that ardour of love for you by which Saint Lawrence was outstandingly faithful in service and glorious in martyrdom, grant that we may love what he loved and put into practice what he taught. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
First reading: 2 Corinthians 9:6-10
Do not forget: thin sowing means thin reaping; the more you sow, the more you reap. Each one should give what he has decided in his own mind, not grudgingly or because he is made to, for God loves a cheerful giver. And there is no limit to the blessings which God can send you – he will make sure that you will always have all you need for yourselves in every possible circumstance, and still have something to spare for all sorts of good works. As scripture says: He was free in almsgiving, and gave to the poor: his good deeds will never be forgotten. The one who provides seed for the sower and bread for food will provide you with all the seed you want and make the harvest of your good deeds a larger one.

Meditation
Jesus can only be seen or understood if we understand the purpose and meaning of his death and resurrection. For, in order to bear fruit, a grain of wheat must fall into the ground and “die”. Only then can it be transformed into a new plant that, in time, will reproduce itself many times over. This is exactly what Jesus is going to do: he is going to give up his life through suffering and death on the cross, in order to rise again in a new life. It is up to us to be the good soil that welcomes the dying seed, lets it germinate and grow to produce much and good fruit.

SAINT Laurent,
Dacre et Martyr
Le diacre Laurent fut arrêté lors de la persécution de Valérien et mourut par le feu peu de jours après le pape Sixte II, exécuté en 258. D’après le récit de son martyre, Laurent, intendant des biens de l’Église, n’aurait pas trouvé meilleur moyen pour les préserver de la rapacité des persécuteurs, que de les distribuer aux pauvres ; il aurait été brûlé sur un lit de fer en forme de gril.
Antienne d’ouverture
Au service de l’Eglise, le diacre saint Laurent s’est offert lui-même; il fut digne de souffrir le martyre et de rejoindre dans la joie le Seigneur Jésus Christ.
Prière d’ouverture
C’est l’ardeur de ton amour, Seigneur, qui a donné au diacre saint Laurent de se montrer fidèle dans son service, et d’accéder à la gloire du martyre ; accorde-nous d’aimer ce qu’il aimait, et d’accomplir ce qu’il a enseigné. Par Jésus.
1ère lecture : 2 Co 9, 6-10
Frères, rappelez-vous le proverbe: À semer trop peu, on récolte trop peu ; à semer largement, on récolte largement. Que chacun donne comme il a décidé dans son cœur, sans regret et sans contrainte, car Dieu aime celui qui donne joyeusement. Et Dieu est assez puissant pour vous donner toute grâce en abondance, afin que vous ayez, en toute chose et toujours, tout ce qu’il vous faut, et même que vous ayez en abondance de quoi faire toute sorte de bien. L’Écriture dit en effet de l’homme juste : Il distribue, il donne aux pauvres ; sa justice demeure à jamais. Dieu, qui fournit la semence au semeur et le pain pour la nourriture, vous fournira la graine ; il la multipliera, il donnera la croissance à ce que vous accomplirez dans la justice.

Méditation
Jésus ne peut être vu ou compris que si l’on saisit le but et la signification de sa mort et de sa résurrection. Pour qu’il donne du fruit, un grain de blé doit tomber en terre et « mourir », afin d’être transformé en une nouvelle plante qui, avec le temps, se reproduira maintes fois. C’est exactement ce que Jésus va faire : il va livrer sa vie dans la souffrance et par sa mort sur la croix, pour ressusciter dans une vie nouvelle. A nous d’être la bonne terre qui accueille le grain qui meurt, le laisse germer et grandir afin de produire beaucoup de fruits, de bons fruits.

SAINTE Thérèse Bénédicte
de La Croix
Née dans le judaïsme, Edith Stein était professeur d’université à Wroclaw (Breslau) et elle se tourna progressivement vers le Christ. Au temps de l’invasion nazie et de la persécution des juifs, elle devint carmélite à Cologne, prenant le nom de Thérèse Bénédicte de La Croix. Elle fut martyrisée à Auschwitz.

Assiste tes enfants, Seigneur, et montre à ceux qui t’implorent ton inépuisable bonté. C’est leur fierté de t’avoir pour Créateur et Providence, restaure pour eux ta création, et l’ayant renouvelée, protège-la. Par Jésus.
1ère lecture : Nb 13, 1-2a.25 – 14, 1.26-29.34-35
En ces jours-là, dans le désert de Parane, le Seigneur parla à Moïse. Il dit: « Envoie des hommes pour explorer le pays de Canaan que je donne aux fils d’Israël. » Au bout de quarante jours, ces envoyés revinrent, après avoir exploré le pays. Ils allèrent trouver Moïse, Aaron et toute la communauté des fils d’Israël, à Cadès, dans le désert de Parane. Ils firent leur rapport devant eux et devant toute la communauté, et ils leur montrèrent les fruits du pays. Ils firent ce récit à Moïse: « Nous sommes allés dans le pays où tu nous as envoyés. Vraiment, il ruisselle de lait et de miel, et voici ses fruits. Cependant le peuple qui l’habite est puissant, ses villes sont fortifiées et très grandes. Nous y avons même vu des descendants d’Anaq. Les Amalécites habitent le pays du Néguev ; les Hittites, les Jébuséens et les Amorites habitent la montagne ;les Cananéens habitent le bord de la mer et les rives du Jourdain.» Caleb imposa silence au peuple qui faisait face à Moïse et il dit : « Allons-y ! Montons prendre possession de ce pays. Oui, nous nous en rendrons maîtres. » Mais les autres hommes de l’expédition répliquèrent : « Nous ne pouvons pas marcher contre ce peuple, car il est plus fort que nous.» Et, s’adressant aux fils d’Israël, ils se mirent à dénigrer le pays qu’ils avaient exploré : « Le pays que nous avons parcouru pour l’explorer est un pays qui dévore ceux qui veulent s’y installer. Tous les hommes que nous y avons vus sont de très haute taille. Nous y avons même vu des géants, des fils d’Anaq, des descendants de géants. A côté d’eux, nous avions l’air de sauterelles, et c’est bien ainsi qu’ils nous voyaient.» Alors toute la communauté éleva la voix, se mit à crier ; et le peuple pleura cette nuit-là. Le Seigneur parla à Moïse et à son frère Aaron. Il dit : « Combien de temps aurai-je affaire à cette communauté mauvaise qui récrimine contre moi ? Les récriminations des fils d’Israël contre moi, je les ai entendues. Tu leur diras: Aussi vrai que je suis vivant – oracle du Seigneur –, je vous traiterai selon vos paroles mêmes qui sont arrivées jusqu’à mes oreilles. Vous tous qu’on a recensés, les hommes de vingt ans et plus, vous qui avez récriminé contre moi, vos cadavres resteront dans ce désert. Vous avez exploré le pays pendant quarante jours, chaque jour vaudra une année: vous porterez donc le poids de vos fautes pendant quarante ans, et vous saurez ce qu’il en coûte d’encourir ma réprobation. Moi, le Seigneur, j’ai parlé. Oui, c’est ainsi que je traiterai cette communauté mauvaise liguée contre moi. Dans ce désert, tous finiront leur vie : là, ils mourront. »

Avec nos pères, nous avons péché, nous avons failli et renié. En Égypte, nos pères ont méconnu tes miracles, oublié l’abondance de tes grâces.
Ils s’empressent d’oublier ce qu’il a fait, sans attendre de connaître ses desseins. Ils se livrent à leur convoitise dans le désert ; là, ils mettent Dieu à l’épreuve.
Ils oublient le Dieu qui les sauve, qui a fait des prodiges en Egypte, des miracles au pays de Cham, des actions terrifiantes sur la mer Rouge
Dieu a décidé de les détruire. C’est alors que Moïse, son élu, surgit sur la brèche, devant lui, pour empêcher que sa fureur les extermine.

Évangile : Mt 15, 21-28
En ce temps-là, Jésus se retira dans la région de Tyr et de Sidon. Voici qu’une Cananéenne, venue de ces territoires, disait en criant : « Prends pitié de moi, Seigneur, fils de David ! Ma fille est tourmentée par un démon. » Mais il ne lui répondit pas un mot. Les disciples s’approchèrent pour lui demander : «Renvoie-la, car elle nous poursuit de ses cris ! » Jésus répondit : « Je n’ai été envoyé qu’aux brebis perdues de la maison d’Israël. » Mais elle vint se prosterner devant lui en disant : « Seigneur, viens à mon secours ! » Il répondit : « Il n’est pas bien de prendre le pain des enfants et de le jeter aux petits chiens.» Elle reprit: « Oui, Seigneur ; mais justement, les petits chiens mangent les miettes qui tombent de la table de leurs maîtres. » Jésus répondit: « Femme, grande est ta foi, que tout se passe pour toi comme tu le veux ! » Et, à l’heure même, sa fille fut guérie.

Dans ta bonté, Seigneur, sanctifie ces dons. Accepte le sacrifice spirituel de cette eucharistie, et fais de nous-mêmes une éternelle offrande à ta gloire. Par Jésus.

Méditation
La femme de l’Evangile montre une grande obstination. Elle n’a pas accepté l’irritation des disciples ni la remarque de Jésus pour l’écarter. Elle savait ce qu’elle voulait et elle faisait confiance en ce que Jésus puisse l’aider. Comme elle, je viens vers Jésus entraînant d’autres dans ma prière. Pendant que je prie pour ceux que j’aime, je découvre leur bonté intrinsèque et demande des bénédictions sur eux. Je pense à nouveau à la façon dont ils sont images de Dieu pour moi et je rends grâce.

SAINT Teresa Benedicta of the Cross
She was born into a Jewish family. She had a distinguished career as a philosopher and received a doctorate at Freiburg. She entered a Carmelite monastery in Cologne and took the name Teresa Benedicta of the Cross. Teresa Benedicta was taken to Auschwitz and killed on 9 August 1942.

They forgot the God who was their saviour, who had done such great things in Egypt, such portents in the land of Ham, such marvels at the Red Sea.

Jesus left Gennesaret and withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon. Then out came a Canaanite woman from that district and started shouting, “Sir, Son of David, take pity on me. My daughter is tormented by a devil.” But he answered her not a word. And his disciples went and pleaded with him. “Give her what she wants,” they said, “because she is shouting after us.” He said in reply, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the House of Israel.” But the woman had come up and was kneeling at his feet. “Lord,” she said, “help me.” He replied, “It is not fair to take the children’s food and throw it to the house-dogs.” She retorted, “Ah yes, sir; but even house-dogs can eat the scraps that fall from their master’s table.” Then Jesus answered her, “Woman, you have great faith. Let your wish be granted.” And from that moment her daughter was well again.

Graciously sanctify these gifts, O Lord, we pray, and, accepting the oblation of this spiritual sacrifice, make of us an eternal offering to you. Through Christ our Lord.

Meditation
The woman in the Gospel shows great obstinacy. She does not accept the disciples’ irritation or Jesus’ remark to dismiss her. She knows what she wants and trusts that Jesus will help her. Like her, I come to Jesus bringing along others in my prayer of intercession. As I pray for those I love, I develop an appreciation for their goodness and ask for them to be blessed. I think about how they are examples for me and give thanks to God for them.

SAINT Dominique, Prêtre
D’abord chanoine régulier d’Osma, Vieille Castille, Dominique de Guzman (1170-1221) découvre, au cours d’un voyage où il accompagne son évêque, les ravages faits par l’hérésie albigeoise dans le Midi de la France, et les vrais remèdes qu’il faudrait employer pour en délivrer l’Église.

Fêtons saint Dominique, ami de Dieu, dont la gloire fut de proclamer avec enthousiasme la vérité reçue du Seigneur.
Prière d’ouverture
Permets, Seigneur, que ton Église trouve un secours dans les mérites et les enseignements de saint Dominique : qu’il intercède pour nous avec toute sa tendresse, après avoir été un prédicateur éminent de ta vérité.
1ère lecture : Nb 12, 1-13
En ces jours-là, parce que Moïse avait épousé une femme éthiopienne, sa sœur Miryam et son frère Aaron se mirent à le critiquer. Ils disaient : « Le Seigneur parle-t-il uniquement par Moïse ? Ne parle-t-il pas aussi par nous?» Le Seigneur entendit. – Or, Moïse était très humble, l’homme le plus humble que la terre ait porté. Soudain, le Seigneur dit à Moïse, à Aaron et à Miryam : « Sortez tous les trois pour aller à la tente de la Rencontre. » Ils sortirent tous les trois. Le Seigneur descendit dans la colonne de nuée et s’arrêta à l’entrée de la Tente. Il appela Aaron et Miryam ; tous deux s’avancèrent, et il leur dit : « Écoutez bien mes paroles : Quand il y a parmi vous un prophète du Seigneur, je me fais connaître à lui dans une vision, je lui parle dans un songe. Il n’en est pas ainsi pour mon serviteur Moïse, lui qui, dans toute ma maison, est digne de confiance : c’est de vive voix que je lui parle, dans une vision claire et non pas en énigmes ; ce qu’il regarde, c’est la forme même du Seigneur. Pourquoi avez-vous osé critiquer mon serviteur Moïse ? » La colère du Seigneur s’enflamma contre eux, puis il s’en alla. La nuée s’éloigna de la tente, et voici : Miryam était couverte d’une lèpre blanche comme de la neige. Aaron se tourna vers elle, et voici qu’elle était lépreuse. Il dit alors à Moïse : « Je t’en supplie, mon seigneur, ne fais pas retomber sur nous ce péché que nous avons eu la folie de commettre. Que Miryam ne soit pas comme l’enfant mort-né dont la chair est à demi rongée lorsqu’il sort du sein de sa mère ! » Moïse cria vers le Seigneur : « Dieu, je t’en prie, guéris-la! »

Évangile : Mt 14, 22-36
Jésus avait nourri la foule dans le désert. Aussitôt il obligea les disciples à monter dans la barque et à le précéder sur l’autre rive, pendant qu’il renverrait les foules. Quand il les eut renvoyées, il gravit la montagne, à l’écart, pour prier. Le soir venu, il était là, seul. La barque était déjà à une bonne distance de la terre, elle était battue par les vagues, car le vent était contraire. Vers la fin de la nuit, Jésus vint vers eux en marchant sur la mer. En le voyant marcher sur la mer, les disciples furent bouleversés. Ils dirent: « C’est un fantôme. » Pris de peur, ils se mirent à crier. Mais aussitôt Jésus leur parla : « Confiance ! c’est moi ; n’ayez plus peur! » Pierre prit alors la parole : « Seigneur, si c’est bien toi, ordonne-moi de venir vers toi sur les eaux. » Jésus lui dit : « Viens ! » Pierre descendit de la barque et marcha sur les eaux pour aller vers Jésus. Mais, voyant la force du vent, il eut peur et, comme il commençait à enfoncer, il cria : « Seigneur, sauve-moi ! » Aussitôt, Jésus étendit la main, le saisit et lui dit: « Homme de peu de foi, pourquoi as-tu douté? » Et quand ils furent montés dans la barque, le vent tomba. Alors ceux qui étaient dans la barque se prosternèrent devant lui, et ils lui dirent: « Vraiment, tu es le Fils de Dieu!» Après la traversée, ils abordèrent à Génésareth. Les gens de cet endroit reconnurent Jésus ; ils firent avertir toute la région, et on lui amena tous les malades. Ils le suppliaient de leur laisser seulement toucher la frange de son manteau, et tous ceux qui le faisaient furent sauvés.

Écoute avec bonté, Seigneur, les prières que nous te présentons par l’intercession de saint Dominique; que la puissance de cette eucharistie protège et encourage ceux qui luttent pour la foi. Par Jésus.

Méditation
Confiance ! C’est moi ; n’ayez plus peur ! La présence de Jésus rassure. Dieu est avec nous : avec son aide, nous sommes capables de surmonter nos peurs. Une fois encore, Pierre nous ressemble, comme s’il était notre porte-parole. Si nous quittons Jésus des yeux pour regarder les vagues qui menacent, nous commençons à perdre pied, comme Pierre. Combien de fois cela nous arrive-t-il ? Comme Pierre, en priant et criant : «Seigneur, sauve-nous !» n’oublions pas de nous exclamer en signe de reconnaissance : « Vraiment, tu es le Fils de Dieu. «

SAINT Dominic
He was born in Castile (part of modern Spain) and became a canon of the cathedral of Osma. In 1216 he founded the Order of Preachers, dedicated to saving souls by preaching and persuasion. Dominic died at Bologna on 6th August 1221.

In the midst of the Church he opened his mouth, and the Lord filled him with the spirit of wisdom and understanding and clothed him in a robe of glory.
Collect
May Saint Dominic come to the help of your Church by his merits and teaching, O Lord, and may he, who was an outstanding preacher of your truth, be a devoted intercessor on our behalf. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

Miriam, and Aaron too, spoke against Moses in connexion with the Cushite woman he had taken. (For he had married a Cushite woman.) They said, “Has the Lord spoken to Moses only? Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side while he would send the crowds away. After sending the crowds away he went up into the hills by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, while the boat, by now far out on the lake, was battling with a heavy sea, for there was a head-wind. In the fourth watch of the night he went towards them, walking on the lake, and when the disciples saw him walking on the lake they were terrified. “It is a ghost” they said, and cried out in fear. But at once Jesus called out to them, saying, “Courage! It is I! Do not be afraid.” It was Peter who answered. “Lord,” he said, “if it is you, tell me to come to you across the water.” “Come”, said Jesus. Then Peter got out of the boat and started walking towards Jesus across the water, but as soon as he felt the force of the wind, he took fright and began to sink. “Lord! Save me!” he cried. Jesus put out his hand at once and held him. “Man of little faith,” he said. “Why did you doubt?” And as they got into the boat the wind dropped. The men in the boat bowed down before him and said, “Truly, you are the Son of God.” Having made the crossing, they came to land at Gennesaret. When the local people recognised him they spread the news through the whole neighbourhood and took all that were sick to him, begging him just to let them touch the fringe of his cloak. And all those who touched it were completely cured.

Attend mercifully to the prayers we offer you, O Lord, by the intercession of Saint Dominic, and through the great power of this sacrifice strengthen by the protection of your grace those who champion the faith. Through Christ our Lord.

May your Church, O Lord, receive with wholehearted reverence the power of this heavenly Sacrament, by which we have been nourished on the commemoration of Saint Dominic, and may your Church, having flourished by means of his preaching, be helped through his intercession. Through Christ our Lord.

“Courage! It is I, do not be afraid!” The presence of Jesus reassures us. God is with us: with his help, we are able to overcome our fears. Once again, Peter looks like us, as if he were our spokesman. If we take our eyes off Jesus and look at the threatening waves, we begin to lose our footing, like Peter. How often does this happen to us? Like Peter, let us pray, “Lord, save us!” And with faith, let us exclaim, “Truly, you are the Son of God.”
