Elu pape en 257, Sixte célébrait la liturgie au cimetière de Calliste, le 6 août 258, quand il fut arrêté et décapité sur place, avec quatre de ses diacres. Trois autres diacres, dont Laurent (10 août), furent victimes de la même persécution de Valérien.

Viens me délivrer, Seigneur, Dieu, viens vite à mon secours. Tu es mon aide et mon libérateur, Seigneur, ne tarde pas.
Prière d’ouverture
Assiste tes enfants, Seigneur, et montre à ceux qui t’implorent ton inépuisable bonté. C’est leur fierté de t’avoir pour Créateur et Providence, restaure pour eux ta création, et l’ayant renouvelée, protège-la. Par Jésus.
1ère lecture : Nombres 11, 4b-15
En ces jours-là, dans le désert, les fils d’Israël se remirent à pleurer: « Ah ! qui donc nous donnera de la viande à manger ? Nous nous rappelons encore le poisson que nous mangions pour rien en Égypte, et les concombres, les melons, les poireaux, les oignons et l’ail ! Maintenant notre gorge est desséchée ; nous ne voyons jamais rien que de la manne ! » La manne était comme des grains de coriandre, elle ressemblait à de l’ambre jaune. Le peuple se dispersait pour la recueillir; puis on la broyait sous la meule, ou on l’écrasait au pilon ; enfin on la cuisait dans la marmite et on en faisait des galettes. Elle avait le goût d’une friandise à l’huile. Lorsque, pendant la nuit, la rosée descendait sur le camp, la manne descendait sur elle. Moïse entendit pleurer le peuple, groupé par clans, chacun à l’entrée de sa tente. Le Seigneur s’enflamma d’une grande colère. Cela déplut à Moïse, et il dit au Seigneur : « Pourquoi traiter si mal ton serviteur ? Pourquoi n’ai-je pas trouvé grâce à tes yeux que tu m’aies imposé le fardeau de tout ce peuple ? Est-ce moi qui ai conçu tout ce peuple, est-ce moi qui l’ai enfanté, pour que tu me dises : “Comme on porte un nourrisson, porte ce peuple dans tes bras jusqu’au pays que j’ai juré de donner à tes pères” ? Où puis-je trouver de la viande pour en donner à tout ce peuple, quand ils viennent pleurer près de moi en disant: “Donne-nous de la viande à manger”? Je ne puis, à moi seul, porter tout ce peuple: c’est trop lourd pour moi. Si c’est ainsi que tu me traites, tue-moi donc ; oui, tue-moi, si j’ai trouvé grâce à tes yeux. Que je ne voie pas mon malheur! »
Psaume : 80 (81), 12-15, 16-17
R/ C’est moi, le Seigneur ton Dieu! Ouvre ta bouche, moi, je l’emplirai!
« Mon peuple n’a pas écouté ma voix, Israël n’a pas voulu de moi. Je l’ai livré à son cœur endurci : qu’il aille et suive ses vues !
« Ah ! Si mon peuple m’écoutait, Israël, s’il allait sur mes chemins ! Aussitôt j’humilierais ses ennemis, contre ses oppresseurs je tournerais ma main.

Évangile : Mt 14, 13-21
En ce temps-là, quand Jésus apprit la mort de Jean le Baptiste, il se retira et partit en barque pour un endroit désert, à l’écart. Les foules l’apprirent et, quittant leurs villes, elles suivirent à pied. En débarquant, il vit une grande foule de gens ; il fut saisi de compassion envers eux et guérit leurs malades. Le soir venu, les disciples s’approchèrent et lui dirent: «L’endroit est désert et l’heure est déjà avancée. Renvoie donc la foule : qu’ils aillent dans les villages s’acheter de la nourriture ! » Mais Jésus leur dit : « Ils n’ont pas besoin de s’en aller. Donnez-leur vous-mêmes à manger. » Alors ils lui disent : « Nous n’avons là que cinq pains et deux poissons. » Jésus dit : « Apportez-les-moi. » Puis, ordonnant à la foule de s’asseoir sur l’herbe, il prit les cinq pains et les deux poissons, et, levant les yeux au ciel, il prononça la bénédiction ; il rompit les pains, il les donna aux disciples, et les disciples les donnèrent à la foule. Ils mangèrent tous et ils furent rassasiés. On ramassa les morceaux qui restaient: cela faisait douze paniers pleins. Ceux qui avaient mangé étaient environ cinq mille, sans compter les femmes et les enfants.
Prière sur les offrandes
Dans ta bonté, Seigneur, sanctifie ces dons. Accepte le sacrifice spirituel de cette eucharistie, et fais de nous-mêmes une éternelle offrande à ta gloire. Par Jésus.

Tu nous donnes, Seigneur, la vraie manne, ce pain venu du ciel qui comble tous les désirs.
Prière après la communion
Seigneur, entoure d’une constante protection ceux que tu as renouvelés par le pain du ciel. Puisque tu ne cesses de les réconforter, rends-les dignes de l’éternel salut. Par Jésus.
Méditation
Voici l’unique miracle à être rapporté par les quatre évangiles, en raison de son lien évident avec l’Eucharistie. Les verbes utilisés dans cet épisode (prendre, prononcer, rompre, donner) sont ceux que l’on retrouve dans le récit de l’institution de l’Eucharistie. Ce miracle présente d’autres points communs avec l’Eucharistie : il se produit au sein d’une communauté ; il porte sur la transformation d’aliments quotidiens, de première nécessité ; c’est un signe de l’abondance des dons de Dieu. Pourtant, le don eucharistique est infiniment plus grand : c’est le corps et le sang du Christ lui-même. Puissions-nous être reconnaissant et entrer plus profondément dans ce grand mystère.

Pope SAINT Sixtus II and his companions
Sixtus was elected Pope in 257. Twelve months later, on 6th August, as he was celebrating Mass in the catacomb of St Calixtus, he was seized by the authorities and beheaded along with four of his deacons. He was buried in the same catacomb.

O God, come to my assistance; O Lord, make haste to help me! You are my rescuer, my help; O Lord, do not delay.
Collect
Draw near to your servants, O Lord, and answer their prayers with unceasing kindness, that, for those who glory in you as their Creator and guide, you may restore what you have created and keep safe what you have restored. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
First reading: Numbers 11:4-15
The sons of Israel began to wail, “Who will give us meat to eat?” they said. “Think of the fish we used to eat free in Egypt, the cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions and garlic! Here we are wasting away, stripped of everything; there is nothing but manna for us to look at!” The manna was like coriander seed, and had the appearance of bdellium. The people went round gathering it, and ground it in a mill or crushed it with a pestle; it was then cooked in a pot and made into pancakes. It tasted like cake made with oil. When the dew fell on the camp at night-time, the manna fell with it. Moses heard the people wailing, every family at the door of its tent. The anger of the Lord flared out, and Moses greatly worried over this. And he spoke to the Lord: “Why do you treat your servant so badly? Why have I not found favour with you, so that you load on me the weight of all this nation? Was it I who conceived all this people, was it I who gave them birth, that you should say to me, “Carry them in your bosom, like a nurse with a baby at the breast, to the land that I swore to give their fathers”? Where am I to find meat to give to all this people, when they come worrying me so tearfully and say, “Give us meat to eat”? I am not able to carry this nation by myself alone; the weight is too much for me. If this is how you want to deal with me, I would rather you killed me! If only I had found favour in your eyes, and not lived to see such misery as this!”
Psalm 80(81):12-17
R/ Ring out your joy to God our strength.
My people did not heed my voice and Israel would not obey, so I left them in their stubbornness of heart to follow their own designs.
O that my people would heed me, that Israel would walk in my ways! At once I would subdue their foes, turn my hand against their enemies.
The Lord’s enemies would cringe at their feet and their subjection would last for ever. But Israel I would feed with finest wheat and fill them with honey from the rock.

Gospel: Matthew 14:13-21
When Jesus received the news of John the Baptist’s death, he withdrew by boat to a lonely place where they could be by themselves. But the people heard of this and, leaving the towns, went after him on foot. So as he stepped ashore he saw a large crowd; and he took pity on them and healed their sick. When evening came, the disciples went to him and said, “This is a lonely place, and the time has slipped by; so send the people away, and they can go to the villages to buy themselves some food.” Jesus replied, “There is no need for them to go: give them something to eat yourselves.” But they answered “All we have with us is five loaves and two fish.” “Bring them here to me”, he said. He gave orders that the people were to sit down on the grass; then he took the five loaves and the two fish, raised his eyes to heaven and said the blessing. And breaking the loaves handed them to his disciples who gave them to the crowds. They all ate as much as they wanted, and they collected the scraps remaining; twelve baskets full. Those who ate numbered about five thousand men, to say nothing of women and children.

Graciously sanctify these gifts, O Lord, we pray, and, accepting the oblation of this spiritual sacrifice, make of us an eternal offering to you. Through Christ our Lord.

You have given us, O Lord, bread from heaven, endowed with all delights and sweetness in every taste.
Prayer after Communion
Accompany with constant protection, O Lord, those you renew with these heavenly gifts and, in your never-failing care for them, make them worthy of eternal redemption. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
This is the only miracle reported in the four gospels, because of its obvious link with the Eucharist. The verbs used in this episode (to take, to pronounce, to break, to give) are those found in the account of the institution of the Eucharist. This miracle has other similarities with the Eucharist: it takes place within a community; it involves the transformation of everyday, basic foodstuff; it is a sign of the abundance of God’s gifts. Yet the Eucharistic gift is infinitely greater: it is the body and blood of Christ himself. May we be grateful and enter more deeply into this great mystery.

Prière d’ouverture
Seigneur, dans la transfiguration de ton Christ, tu as confirmé par le témoignage de Moise et d’Élie la vérité des mystères de la foi, et tu as annoncé notre merveilleuse adoption ; accorde-nous d’écouter la voix de ton Fils bien-aimé, afin de pouvoir un jour partager avec lui son héritage. 1ère lecture : Dn 7, 9-10.13-14
La nuit, au cours d’une vision, moi, Daniel, je regardais : des trônes furent disposés, et un Vieillard prit place ; son habit était blanc comme la neige, et les cheveux de sa tête, comme de la laine immaculée ; son trône était fait de flammes de feu, avec des roues de feu ardent. Un fleuve de feu coulait, qui jaillissait devant lui. Des milliers de milliers le servaient, des myriades de myriades se tenaient devant lui. Le tribunal prit place et l’on ouvrit des livres. Je regardais, au cours des visions de la nuit, et je voyais venir, avec les nuées du ciel, comme un Fils d’homme; il parvint jusqu’au Vieillard, et on le fit avancer devant lui. 2ème lecture : 2 Pierre, 1, 16-19
Ce n’est pas en ayant recours à des récits imaginaires sophistiqués que nous vous avons fait connaître la puissance et la venue de notre Seigneur Jésus Christ, mais c’est pour avoir été les témoins oculaires de sa grandeur. Car il a reçu de Dieu le Père l’honneur et la gloire quand, depuis la Gloire magnifique, lui parvint une voix qui disait : Celui-ci est mon Fils, mon bien-aimé ; en lui j’ai toute ma joie. Cette voix venant du ciel, nous l’avons nous-mêmes entendue quand nous étions avec lui sur la montagne sainte. Et ainsi se confirme pour nous la parole prophétique ; vous faites bien de fixer votre attention sur elle, comme sur une lampe brillant dans un lieu obscur jusqu’à ce que paraisse le jour et que l’étoile du matin se lève dans vos cœurs.

Evangile: Mt 17, 1-9
En ce temps-là, Jésus prit avec lui Pierre, Jacques et Jean, et les emmena, eux seuls, à l’écart sur une haute montagne. Et il fut transfiguré devant eux. Ses vêtements devinrent resplendissants, d’une blancheur telle que personne sur terre ne peut obtenir une blancheur pareille. Élie leur apparut avec Moïse, et tous deux s’entretenaient avec Jésus. Pierre alors prend la parole et dit à Jésus : « Rabbi, il est bon que nous soyons ici ! Dressons donc trois tentes : une pour toi, une pour Moïse, et une pour Élie. » De fait, Pierre ne savait que dire, tant leur frayeur était grande. Survint une nuée qui les couvrit de son ombre, et de la nuée une voix se fit entendre : « Celui-ci est mon Fils bien-aimé : écoutez-le! » Soudain, regardant tout autour, ils ne virent plus que Jésus seul avec eux. Ils descendirent de la montagne, et Jésus leur ordonna de ne raconter à personne ce qu’ils avaient vu, avant que le Fils de l’homme soit ressuscité d’entre les morts. Et ils restèrent fermement attachés à cette parole, tout en se demandant entre eux ce que voulait dire : « ressusciter d’entre les morts».
Prière sur les offrandes
Sanctifie nos offrandes, Seigneur, par le mystère de ton Fils transfiguré en gloire; et, dans le rayonnement de sa lumière, purifie-nous de la lèpre du péché. Par Jésus.

Quand le Christ apparaîtra, nous serons semblables à lui, parce que nous le verrons tel qu’il est.

Transforme-nous, Seigneur, par cette nourriture venue de to : qu’elle nous fasse ressembler davantage à celui dont tu as révèle la splendeur dans le mystère de la transfiguration. Lui qui.
Méditation
Le récit de la transfiguration de Jésus nous invite à reconnaitre Jésus comme la continuité de la Loi et des prophètes, à le reconnaitre Seigneur et Fils de Dieu. Ainsi, si je reçois Jésus comme Dieu lui-même, et que je mets en lui ma foi pour la vie éternelle, alors la grâce pourra faire son chemin en moi et transformer ma conduite au quotidien en vue de l’éternité. Aujourd’hui où tout bascule dans notre monde, profitons de ce texte pour réfléchir sur notre vie présente et surtout sur nos fins dernières ? Croyons-nous vraiment à la vie éternelle auprès de Dieu dans la communion de tous les saints ? Sommes-nous sur la bonne voie pour vivre de cette vie éternelle auprès de Dieu ?

The Transfiguration of the Lord

In a resplendent cloud the Holy Spirit appeared. The Father’s voice was heard: This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased. Listen to him.

O God, who in the glorious Transfiguration of your Only Begotten Son confirmed the mysteries of faith by the witness of the Fathers and wonderfully prefigured our full adoption to sonship, grant, we pray, to your servants, that, listening to the voice of your beloved Son, we may merit to become coheirs with him. Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
First reading: Daniel 7:9-10,13-14
As I watched: Thrones were set in place and one of great age took his seat. His robe was white as snow, the hair of his head as pure as wool. His throne was a blaze of flames, its wheels were a burning fire. A stream of fire poured out, issuing from his presence. A thousand thousand waited on him, ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him. A court was held and the books were opened. I gazed into the visions of the night. Second reading: 2 Peter 1:16-19

He was honoured and glorified by God the Father, when the Sublime Glory itself spoke to him and said, “This is my Son, the Beloved; he enjoys my favour.” We heard this ourselves, spoken from heaven, when we were with him on the holy mountain. So we have confirmation of what was said in prophecies; and you will be right to depend on prophecy and take it as a lamp for lighting a way through the dark until the dawn comes and the morning star rises in your minds.

Gospel: Matthew 17:1-9
Jesus took with him Peter and James and his brother John and led them up a high mountain where they could be alone. There in their presence he was transfigured: his face shone like the sun and his clothes became as white as the light. Suddenly Moses and Elijah appeared to them; they were talking with him. Then Peter spoke to Jesus. “Lord,” he said, “it is wonderful for us to be here; if you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” He was still speaking when suddenly a bright cloud covered them with shadow, and from the cloud there came a voice which said, “This is my Son, the Beloved; he enjoys my favour. Listen to him.” When they heard this the disciples fell on their faces overcome with fear. But Jesus came up and touched them. “Stand up,” he said, “do not be afraid.” And when they raised their eyes they saw no one but only Jesus. As they came down from the mountain Jesus gave them this order, “Tell no one about the vision until the Son of Man has risen from the dead.”

Sanctify, O Lord, we pray, these offerings here made to celebrate the glorious Transfiguration of your Only Begotten Son, and by his radiant splendour cleanse us from the stains of sin. Through Christ our Lord.

When Christ appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.
Prayer after Communion
May the heavenly nourishment we
have received, O Lord, we pray, transform us into the likeness of your Son, whose radiant splendour you willed to make manifest in his glorious Transfiguration. Who lives and reigns for ever and ever.
Meditation
The account of the transfiguration of Jesus invites us to recognize Jesus as the continuation of the Law and the prophets, to recognize him as Lord and Son of God. Thus, if I receive Jesus as Lord, as the Son of God, as God himself, and if I put my faith in him for eternal life, then grace will be able to make its way into me and transform my daily conduct in view of eternity. Today, when everything is turning upside down in our world, let us take advantage of this text to reflect on our present life and especially on our final end? Do we really believe in eternal life with God in the communion of all the saints? Are we really on the right path to live this eternal life with God?

Au lendemain de la définition par le concile d’Ephèse (431) de la maternité divine de Marie, le pape Sixte III érigea à Rome la basilique Sainte-Marie Majeure. C’est la plus ancienne des églises d’Occident dédiées à la Mère de Dieu.
Antienne d’ouverture : Ps 67, 6-7.
Adorons Dieu dans sa sainte demeure. Il fait habiter les siens tous ensemble dans sa maison, c’est lui qui donne force et puissance à son peuple.
Prière d’ouverture
Tu protèges, Seigneur, ceux qui comptent sur toi, sans toi rien n’est fort et rien n’est saint. Multiplie pour nous tes gestes de miséricorde afin que, sous ta conduite, en faisant un bon usage des biens qui passent, nous puissions déjà nous attacher à ceux qui demeurent. Par Jésus.
1ère lecture : Lv 25, 1.8-17
Le Seigneur parla à Moïse sur le mont Sinaï et dit : « Vous compterez sept semaines d’années, c’est-à-dire sept fois sept ans, soit quarante-neuf ans. Le septième mois, le dix du mois, en la fête du Grand Pardon, vous sonnerez du cor pour l’ovation ; ce jour-là, dans tout votre pays, vous sonnerez du cor. Vous ferez de la cinquantième année une année sainte, et vous proclamerez la libération pour tous les habitants du pays. Ce sera pour vous le jubilé : chacun de vous réintégrera sa propriété, chacun de vous retournera dans son clan. Cette cinquantième année sera pour vous une année jubilaire : vous ne ferez pas les semailles, vous ne moissonnerez pas le grain qui aura poussé tout seul, vous ne vendangerez pas la vigne non taillée. Le jubilé sera pour vous chose sainte, vous mangerez ce qui pousse dans les champs. En cette année jubilaire, chacun de vous réintégrera sa propriété. Si, dans l’intervalle, tu dois vendre ou acheter, n’exploite pas ton compatriote. Quand tu achèteras à ton compatriote, tu tiendras compte des années écoulées depuis le jubilé; celui qui vend tiendra compte des années qui restent à courir. Plus il restera d’années, plus tu augmenteras le prix; moins il en restera, plus tu réduiras le prix, car la vente ne concerne que le nombre des récoltes. Tu n’exploiteras pas ton compatriote, tu craindras ton Dieu. Je suis le Seigneur votre Dieu. »

Évangile : Mt 14, 1-12
En ce temps-là, Hérode, qui était au pouvoir en Galilée, apprit la renommée de Jésus et dit à ses serviteurs : « Celui-là, c’est Jean le Baptiste, il est ressuscité d’entre les morts, et voilà pourquoi des miracles se réalisent par lui. » Car Hérode avait fait arrêter Jean, l’avait fait enchaîner et mettre en prison. C’était à cause d’Hérodiade, la femme de son frère Philippe. En effet, Jean lui avait dit : « Tu n’as pas le droit de l’avoir pour femme. » Hérode cherchait à le faire mourir, mais il eut peur de la foule qui le tenait pour un prophète. Lorsqu’arriva l’anniversaire d’Hérode, la fille d’Hérodiade dansa au milieu des convives, et elle plut à Hérode. Alors il s’engagea par serment à lui donner ce qu’elle demanderait. Poussée par sa mère, elle dit : « Donne-moi ici, sur un plat, la tête de Jean le Baptiste.» Le roi fut contrarié; mais à cause de son serment et des convives, il commanda de la lui donner. Il envoya décapiter Jean dans la prison. La tête de celui-ci fut apportée sur un plat et donnée à la jeune fille, qui l’apporta à sa mère. Les disciples de Jean arrivèrent pour prendre son corps, qu’ils ensevelirent; puis ils allèrent l’annoncer à Jésus.

À qui vais-je m’identifier ? A Jean le Baptiste, défenseur intrépide de la vérité ? Ou bien à Hérode qui, poussé par l’opinion publique et par ses propres intérêts, a compromis la justice et la vérité ? Tous, nous avons sans doute à l’esprit des moments où nous avons fait des compromis avec ce que nous savions être la chose à faire, et où nous avons choisi la solution de facilité. Jean nous offre un exemple d’intégrité. Et, comme lui, nous avons été appelés, à notre manière, dans ce que nous sommes, dans ce que nous faisons et avec la grâce de Dieu, à être des prophètes porte-paroles de la voix de Dieu ; ce qui n’est pas toujours facile.

The Dedication of the Basilica of St Mary Major

The Council of Ephesus in 431 formally proclaimed the mother of Jesus as the Mother of God, and the church (basilica) of St Mary Major on the Esquiline Hill in Rome was built shortly afterwards to celebrate her motherhood. This is the oldest church in the West that is dedicated to Our Lady.

Prompted by her mother she said, “Give me John the Baptist’s head, here, on a dish.” The king was distressed but, thinking of the oaths he had sworn and of his guests, he ordered it to be given her, and sent and had John beheaded in the prison. The head was brought in on a dish and given to the girl, who took it to her mother. John’s disciples came and took the body and buried it; then they went off to tell Jesus.

Meditation
With whom will I identify? With John the Baptist, fearless defender of the truth? Or with Herod who, driven by public opinion and his own interests, compromised justice and truth? All of us can think of times when we have compromised with what we knew to be the right thing to do, and taken the easy way out. John offers us an example of integrity. And, like him, each of us has been called, in our own way, in what we are, in what we do, and with God’s grace, to be prophets, spokespersons for God and for God’s way; a task which is not always easy.

Méditation
Nous sommes certainement choqués devant l’attitude des gens de Nazareth. Ils étaient très sûrs de tout savoir sur Jésus ; ils étaient si sûrs de bien le connaître et de ce fait, ils ne pouvaient rien admettre de nouveau à son sujet. Le refus des voisins de Jésus nous pousse à nous poser les questions suivantes : suis-je certain de bien connaître Jésus ? Ne pourrais-je pas le connaître davantage ? Ai-je perdu ma capacité d’être surpris par Jésus, par sa manière d’agir et par ce qu’il attend de moi ? Puissions-nous avoir la grâce de ne pas nous fermer à sa présence et de ne pas rester sourds à son appel.

Priest
He was the son of a peasant farmer, and a slow and unpromising candidate for the priesthood. He was eventually ordained on account of his devoutness rather than any achievement or promise. He was a noted preacher, and a celebrated confessor.

Meditation
We are certainly shocked at the attitude of the people of Nazareth. They were so sure they knew Jesus well; they thought they knew everything about him that they could not admit anything new. The denial of Jesus by his neighbours prompts us to ask the following questions: Am I sure that I know Jesus well? Couldn’t I know him better? Have I lost my disposition to be “surprised” by Jesus, by his way of acting and by what he expects from me? May we have the grace to open ourselves to his presence and not remain deaf to his call.

Il fut d’abord prêtre séculier. En 1839, il entra chez les pères Maristes. Il quitta cette congrégation en 1856 suite aux apparitions de la Vierge Marie qui le chargeait de fonder un Institut sacerdotal voué à l’adoration perpétuelle du Saint Sacrement. Ses dernières années de vie furent marquées par de grandes incompréhensions entre ses religieux et lui.

Adorons Dieu dans sa sainte demeure. Il fait habiter les siens tous ensemble dans sa maison, c’est lui qui donne force et puissance à son peuple.

Aaron et tous les fils d’Israël virent arriver Moïse: son visage rayonnait. Comme ils n’osaient pas s’approcher, Moïse les appela. Aaron et tous les chefs de la communauté vinrent alors vers lui, et il leur adressa la parole. Ensuite, tous les fils d’Israël s’approchèrent, et il leur transmit tous les ordres que le Seigneur lui avait donnés sur la montagne du Sinaï. Quand il eut fini de leur parler, il mit un voile sur son visage. Et, lorsqu’il se présentait devant le Seigneur pour parler avec lui, il enlevait son voile jusqu’à ce qu’il soit sorti. Alors, il transmettait aux fils d’Israël les ordres qu’il avait reçus, et les fils d’Israël voyaient rayonner son visage. Puis il remettait le voile sur son visage jusqu’à ce qu’il rentre pour parler avec le Seigneur.

Quelle est ma perle, ce que j’aime par-dessus tout ? Quel est ce trésor caché pour lequel je sacrifierai tout ? La parabole du trésor et de la perle de ce jour, m’invite à une introspection profonde et vraie. Quelle est l’option fondamentale de ma vie ? À quoi le monde ressemblerait-il si la perle que je cherche était de servir les pauvres et les exclus, si je travaillais à semer la paix et la justice ? Jésus dit que le monde serait alors comme le Royaume de Dieu.

SAINT Eusebius of Vercelli
He was born in Sardinia around 340 and was made the first bishop of Vercelli in Piedmont. He was a strong supporter of orthodoxy, and in 355 was sent into exile by the Emperor for refusing to sign the condemnation of St Athanasius that had been passed by the Council of Milan.

Meditation
What is my pearl, that thing which I love above all? What is that hidden treasure for which I would sacrifice everything? Today’s parable of the treasure and the pearl invites me to a deep and true introspection. What have I set as a fundamental option in my life? What would the world be like if the pearl I seek were to serve the poor and the excluded? What if I worked to sow peace and justice? Jesus says that the world would then be like the Kingdom of God.
