Fete
Tous les évangiles témoignent qu’au pied de la croix de Jésus un groupe fidèle était présent : celui des femmes dont Luc nous dit qu’elles avaient suivi et servi Jésus durant sa prédication. Parmi elles, Marie de Magdala est nommée la première. Elle avait été la proie du démon ; mais la parole du Christ suscite en elle une foi qui la libère des passions, et elle répond à l’amour que cette parole lui révèle avec toute l’ardeur de son cœur purifié.

A Marie Madeleine, Jésus ressuscité a confié ce message : « Va trouver mes frères, et dis-leur: Je monte vers mon Père et votre Père, vers mon Dieu et votre Dieu.»
Prière d’ouverture
Seigneur, notre Dieu, c’est à Marie-Madeleine que ton Fils bien-aimé a confié la première annonce de la joie pascale ; Accorde-nous, à sa prière et à son exemple, la grâce d’annoncer le Christ ressuscité et de le contempler un jour dans ta gloire.
1ère lecture : 2 Cor 5, 14-17
Frères, l’amour du Christ nous saisit quand nous pensons qu’un seul est mort pour tous, et qu’ainsi tous ont passé par la mort. Car le Christ est mort pour tous, afin que les vivants n’aient plus leur vie centrée sur eux-mêmes, mais sur lui, qui est mort et ressuscité pour eux. Désormais nous ne regardons plus personne d’une manière simplement humaine : si nous avons connu le Christ de cette manière, maintenant nous ne le connaissons plus ainsi. Si donc quelqu’un est dans le Christ, il est une créature nouvelle. Le monde ancien s’en est allé, un monde nouveau est déjà né. – Parole du Seigneur.

Évangile : Jean 20, 1.11-18
Le premier jour de la semaine, Marie Madeleine se rend au tombeau de grand matin ; c’était encore les ténèbres. Elle s’aperçoit que la pierre a été enlevée du tombeau. Elle se tenait près du tombeau, au-dehors, tout en pleurs. Et en pleurant, elle se pencha vers le tombeau. Elle aperçoit deux anges vêtus de blanc, assis l’un à la tête et l’autre aux pieds, à l’endroit où avait reposé le corps de Jésus. Ils lui demandent : « Femme, pourquoi pleures-tu ? » Elle leur répond: « On a enlevé mon Seigneur, et je ne sais pas où on l’a déposé.» Ayant dit cela, elle se retourna ; elle aperçoit Jésus qui se tenait là, mais elle ne savait pas que c’était Jésus. Jésus lui dit: « Femme, pourquoi pleures-tu? Qui cherches-tu ? » Le prenant pour le jardinier, elle lui répond: « Si c’est toi qui l’as emporté, dis-moi où tu l’as déposé, et moi, j’irai le prendre.» Jésus lui dit alors: « Marie!» S’étant retournée, elle lui dit en hébreu : « Rabbouni! », c’est-à-dire : Maître. Jésus reprend: « Ne me retiens pas, car je ne suis pas encore monté vers le Père. Va trouver mes frères pour leur dire que je monte vers mon Père et votre Père, vers mon Dieu et votre Dieu.» Marie Madeleine s’en va donc annoncer aux disciples: « J’ai vu le Seigneur ! », et elle raconta ce qu’il lui avait dit.

Méditation
Frères et sœurs en ce jour nous sommes invités à rester fidèle au Seigneur, lui qui accomplit toujours ses promesses. En effet, sainte Marie Madeleine que nous fêtons en ce jour est ce modèle de persévérance. Elle a accompagné le Seigneur jusqu’à son dernier soupire et même après l’ensevelissement, elle a tenu à donner des soins au corps de son maître, ce qui lui a valu la grâce d’être la première à annoncer l’accomplissement de la résurrection. Nous aussi prions le Seigneur de nous accorder persévérance et fidélité à le servir afin que témoins de ses merveilles, nous l’annoncions au monde.

SAINT Mary Magdalene
Mary of Magdala was healed of “seven devils” by Jesus. She ministered to him in Galilee and was present at his crucifixion. She was in the group of women who were the first to discover the empty tomb, and it was to her that the risen Jesus first appeared.

It was very early on the first day of the week and still dark, when Mary of Magdala came to the tomb. Meditation
Brothers and sisters, on this day we are invited to remain faithful to the Lord, who always fulfils his promises. Indeed, St Mary Magdalene, whom we celebrate today, is a model of perseverance. She accompanied the Lord till his last breath, and even after his burial, she continued to care for the body of her master, which earned her the grace of being the first to announce the fulfilment of the Resurrection. We too pray to the Lord to grant us perseverance and fidelity in serving him, so that we may proclaim his wonders to the world.

Prêtre et Docteur de l’Eglise
Né à Brindisi en Italie, ce capucin (1559-1619) mourut à Lisbonne, au terme d’une vie mouvementée durant laquelle il fut professeur, polémiste, aumônier militaire, diplomate, enfin général de son ordre. Il sema la parole de Dieu dans toute l’Europe et fut un défenseur de la foi catholique après le concile de Trente.

1ère lecture : Exode 11, 10 – 12, 14

Ce sera une bête sans défaut, un mâle, de l’année. Vous prendrez un agneau ou un chevreau. Vous le garderez jusqu’au quatorzième jour du mois. Dans toute l’assemblée de la communauté d’Israël, on l’immolera au coucher du soleil. On prendra du sang, que l’on mettra sur les deux montants et sur le linteau des maisons où on le mangera. On mangera sa chair cette nuit-là, on la mangera rôtie au feu, avec des pains sans levain et des herbes amères. Vous n’en mangerez aucun morceau qui soit à moitié cuit ou qui soit bouilli; tout sera rôti au feu, y compris la tête, les jarrets et les entrailles. Vous n’en garderez rien pour le lendemain; ce qui resterait pour le lendemain, vous le détruirez en le brûlant. Vous mangerez ainsi : la ceinture aux reins, les sandales aux pieds, le bâton à la main. Vous mangerez en toute hâte : c’est la Pâque du Seigneur. Méditation
Frères et sœurs, les textes de ce jour tournent autour du Sabbat. Jour de louange au Seigneur uniquement sans aucun doute. Mais cette louange ou alors cette manière de prétendre louer le Seigneur est-elle la bonne quand nos cœurs sont remplis de désir de vengeance, de colère, de haine ? Jésus invite ses contemporains et nous aujourd’hui à louer le Seigneur par une conscience droite et pure et non par des observances extérieures qui provoquent la mort au lieu de promouvoir la vie. Seigneur donne nous de te louer tous les jours par des actions et des attitudes intérieures promotrices de vie et de salut.

He was born in Brindisi, joined the Capuchin Friars, and studied at the University of Padua, where he learned a number of languages (including Latin, Greek, Hebrew, Syriac, French, and German) and acquired a deep knowledge of the Bible. He preached all over Europe, not just to Catholics but to Protestants and to Jews.

Speak to the whole community of Israel and say, ‘On the tenth day of this month each man must take an animal from the flock, one for each family: one animal for each household. If the household is too small to eat the animal, a man must join with his neighbour, the nearest to his house, as the number of persons requires. You must take into account what each can eat in deciding the number for the animal. It must be an animal without blemish, a male one year old; you may take it from either sheep or goats. You must keep it till the fourteenth day of the month when the whole assembly of the community of Israel shall slaughter it between the two evenings. Some of the blood must then be taken and put on the two doorposts and the lintel of the houses where it is eaten. That night, the flesh is to be eaten, roasted over the fire; it must be eaten with unleavened bread and bitter herbs. Do not eat any of it raw or boiled, but roasted over the fire, head, feet and entrails. You must not leave any over till the morning: whatever is left till morning you are to burn. The Pharisees noticed it and said to him, “Look, your disciples are doing something that is forbidden on the Sabbath.” But he said to them, “Have you not read what David did when he and his followers were hungry – how he went into the house of God and how they ate the loaves of offering which neither he nor his followers were allowed to eat, but which were for the priests alone? Or again, have you not read in the Law that on the Sabbath day the Temple priests break the Sabbath without being blamed for it? Now here, I tell you, is something greater than the Temple. And if you had understood the meaning of the words: What I want is mercy, not sacrifice, you would not have condemned the blameless. For the Son of Man is master of the Sabbath.”

Meditation
The Gospel of today revolves around the Sabbath. A day of praise to the Lord only, no doubt. But is this praise, or is this way of pretending to praise the Lord the right one when our hearts are filled with the desire for revenge, anger, hatred? Jesus invites his contemporaries and us, today, to praise the Lord with an upright and pure conscience, and not with external observances that cause death instead of promoting life. Lord, give us the power to praise you every day with actions and attitudes that promote life and salvation.

Méditation
Frères et sœurs, en ce jour, les textes nous parlent de liberté. Le seul joug que nous devons porter est celui de l’amour de Dieu et du prochain. Les chaines de l’esclavage physique tel que l’ont vécu les Hébreux sont en horreur au Seigneur, d’où la mission de Moïse. Par ailleurs, les chaines de l’esclavage spirituel qui nous empêchent de louer le Seigneur par le vécu de la charité doivent être brisées au profit du manteau de l’amour. Seigneur donnes nous d’identifier et de nous libérer des chaines de l’esclavage qui nous éloigne de Toi sous toute ses formes, et d’aider nos prochains à en faire de même.

Meditation
Our readings today speak of freedom. The only yoke we must bear is that of the love of God and of neighbour. The chains of physical slavery as born by the Hebrews do not please the Lord, hence the mission of Moses. Similarly, the chains of spiritual slavery that prevent us from praising the Lord must be broken in favour of the mantle of love. Lord, enable us to identify the chains of slavery that keep us from You and to break free of them. May we help our neighbours to do the same.

1ère lecture : Exode 3, 1-6.9-12
En ces jours-là, Moïse était berger du troupeau de son beau-père Jéthro, prêtre de Madiane. Il mena le troupeau au-delà du désert et parvint à la montagne de Dieu, à l’Horeb. L’ange du Seigneur lui apparut dans la flamme d’un buisson en feu. Moïse regarda : le buisson brûlait sans se consumer. Moïse se dit alors : « Je vais faire un détour pour voir cette chose extraordinaire :pourquoi le buisson ne se consume-t-il pas ?» Le Seigneur vit qu’il avait fait un détour pour voir, et Dieu l’appela du milieu du buisson:« Moïse ! Retire les sandales de tes pieds, car le lieu où tu te tiens est une terre sainte! » Et il déclara : « Je suis le Dieu de ton père, le Dieu d’Abraham, le Dieu d’Isaac, le Dieu de Jacob. » Moïse se voilà le visage car il craignait de porter son regard sur Dieu. Le Seigneur dit: « Maintenant, le cri des fils d’Israël est parvenu jusqu’à moi, et j’ai vu l’oppression que leur font subir les Égyptiens. Maintenant donc, va ! Je t’envoie chez Pharaon : tu feras sortir d’Égypte mon peuple, les fils d’Israël. » Moïse dit à Dieu : « Qui suis-je pour aller trouver Pharaon, et pour faire sortir d’Égypte les fils d’Israël ? » Dieu lui répondit : « Je suis avec toi. Et tel est le signe que c’est moi qui t’ai envoyé : quand tu auras fait sortir d’Égypte mon peuple, vous rendrez un culte à Dieu sur cette montagne. ».

Méditation
Frères et sœurs, les textes de ce jour nous invitent à exulter avec le Christ. La raison en est simple, notre créateur et sauveur a volontairement décidé de se révéler à nous. Ceci vient rompre avec la conception d’un Dieu lointain que nul ne pouvait contempler, comme Moïse et Elie en feront l’expérience. Il se laisse connaitre et se fait d’avantage proche de nous en la personne de Jésus, de tel sorte que le connaitre reviens à regarder le Christ avec un cœur reconnaissant notre petitesse devant lui. Seigneur donnes nous de te connaitre d’avantage par ton Fils Jésus notre sauveur, ainsi nous pourrons d’avantage t’aimer et te servir.

SAINT John Plessington
Originally English, he was ordained in Segovia on 25 March 1662. He returned to England in 1663 ministering to Catholics in the areas of Holywell and Cheshire, often in hiding. He was arrested, imprisoned for two months, and then hanged, drawn and quartered for the crime of being a Catholic priest.

Meditation
Our meditation of today invites us to rejoice with Christ. The reason is simple: our Creator and Saviour has voluntarily decided to reveal himself to us. This breaks with the conception of a distant God whom no one could contemplate, as Moses and Elijah will experience. He allows himself to be known and becomes closer to us in the person of Jesus, so that to know him is to look at Christ with a heart that recognizes our lowliness before him. Lord, help us to know you more through your Son Jesus our Saviour, so that we may love and serve you better.

He was Bishop of Utrecht between 816 and 838. Frederick was born around 780 in Friesland and was a grandson of the Frisian King Radboud. He preached at Walcheren and together with St. Odulfus in Stavoren and its surroundings.

Then the child’s sister said to Pharaoh’s daughter, “Shall I go and find you a nurse among the Hebrew women to suckle the child for you?” “Yes, go,” Pharaoh’s daughter said to her; and the girl went off to find the baby’s own mother. To her the daughter of Pharaoh said, “Take this child away and suckle it for me. I will see you are paid.” So the woman took the child and suckled it. When the child grew up, she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter who treated him like a son; she named him Moses because, she said, “I drew him out of the water.” Moses, a man by now, set out at this time to visit his countrymen, and he saw what a hard life they were having; and he saw an Egyptian strike a Hebrew, one of his countrymen. Looking round he could see no one in sight, so he killed the Egyptian and hid him in the sand. On the following day he came back, and there were two Hebrews, fighting. He said to the man who was in the wrong, “What do you mean by hitting your fellow countryman?” “And who appointed you” the man retorted, “to be prince over us, and judge? Meditation
Brothers and sisters, our Lord is in pain despite the blessings he never ceases to shower upon us. Indeed, our heart easily becomes impenetrable and blind to His calls. He therefore warns us this day about the result of such behaviour. Pharaoh’s daughter did not need to be a Hebrew to save the little child who will be the liberator of God’s people. She had no idea of the promise made to Abraham, but she only applied the commandment of love long before it was ever pronounced. We who have been taught the signs of grace should strive to live as righteous men and women, so that at the judgment we may be exalted to the eternal life.

En ces jours-là, un homme de la tribu de Lévi avait épousé une femme de la même tribu. Elle devint enceinte, et elle enfanta un fils. Voyant qu’il était beau, elle le cacha durant trois mois. Lorsqu’il lui fut impossible de le tenir caché plus longtemps, elle prit une corbeille de jonc, qu’elle enduisit de bitume et de goudron. Elle y plaça l’enfant et déposa la corbeille au bord du Nil, au milieu des roseaux. La sœur de l’enfant se tenait à distance pour voir ce qui allait arriver. La fille de Pharaon descendit au fleuve pour s’y baigner, tandis que ses suivantes se promenaient sur la rive. Elle aperçut la corbeille parmi les roseaux et envoya sa servante pour la prendre. Elle l’ouvrit et elle vit l’enfant. C’était un petit garçon, il pleurait. Elle en eut pitié et dit : « C’est un enfant des Hébreux. La sœur de l’enfant dit alors à la fille de Pharaon: « Veux-tu que j’aille te chercher, parmi les femmes des Hébreux, une nourrice qui, pour toi, nourrira l’enfant ? » La fille de Pharaon lui répondit: « Va. » La jeune fille alla donc chercher la mère de l’enfant. La fille de Pharaon dit à celle-ci : « Emmène cet enfant et nourris-le pour moi. C’est moi qui te donnerai ton salaire. » Alors la femme emporta l’enfant et le nourrit. Lorsque l’enfant eut grandi, elle le ramena à la fille de Pharaon qui le traita comme son propre fils; elle lui donna le nom de Moïse, en disant: « Je l’ai tiré des eaux.» Or vint le jour où Moïse, qui avait grandi, se rendit auprès de ses frères et les vit accablés de corvées. Il vit un Égyptien qui frappait un Hébreu, l’un de ses frères. Regardant autour de lui et ne voyant personne, il frappa à mort l’Égyptien et l’enfouit dans le sable. Le lendemain, il sortit de nouveau : voici que deux Hébreux se battaient. Il dit à l’agresseur : « Pourquoi frappes-tu ton compagnon ? L’homme lui répliqua : « Qui t’a institué chef et juge sur nous? Veux-tu me tuer comme tu as tué l’Égyptien ? » Moïse eut peur et se dit: « Pas de doute, la chose est connue.» Pharaon en fut informé et chercha à faire tuer Moïse. Celui-ci s’enfuit loin de Pharaon et habita au pays de Madiane.

En ce temps-là, Jésus se mit à faire des reproches aux villes où avaient eu lieu la plupart de ses miracles, parce qu’elles ne s’étaient pas converties: « Malheureuse es-tu, Corazine ! Malheureuse es-tu, Bethsaïde ! Car, si les miracles qui ont eu lieu chez vous avaient eu lieu à Tyr et à Sidon, ces villes, autrefois, se seraient converties, sous le sac et la cendre. Aussi, je vous le déclare : au jour du Jugement, Tyr et Sidon seront traitées moins sévèrement que vous. Et toi, Capharnaüm, seras-tu donc élevée jusqu’au ciel ? Non, tu descendras jusqu’au séjour des morts ! Car, si les miracles qui ont eu lieu chez toi avaient eu lieu à Sodome, cette ville serait encore là aujourd’hui. Aussi, je vous le déclare : au jour du Jugement, le pays de Sodome sera traité moins sévèrement que toi. »

Frères et sœurs, notre Seigneur est en peine malgré les bienfaits dont il ne cesse de nous combler. En effet, notre cœur se fait impénétrable et aveugle à ses appels. Il nous met donc en garde ce jour, sur le résultat d’un tel comportement. La fille de pharaon n’a pas eu besoin d’être Hébreux pour sauver le petit enfant qui sera libérateur du peuple de Dieu, elle qui n’avait aucune idée de la promesse faite à Abraham, mais qui a appliqué le commandement de l’amour. Nous qui avons reçu l’enseignement et les signes de la grâce, efforçons nous de vivre en Homme juste afin qu’au jugement nous soyons élevés jusqu’aux demeures éternelles.
