SAINT Kenelm
Saint Kenelm was the son of Kenwulf, who was King of Mercia from 796 to 821. He is remembered by the people of the West Midlands as a faithful follower of Christ in particularly difficult circumstances.

First reading: Exodus 1:8-14,22
There came to power in Egypt a new king who knew nothing of Joseph. “Look,” he said to his subjects “these people, the sons of Israel, have become so numerous and strong that they are a threat to us. We must be prudent and take steps against their increasing any further, or if war should break out, they might add to the number of our enemies. They might take arms against us and so escape out of the country.” Accordingly they put slave-drivers over the Israelites to wear them down under heavy loads. In this way they built the store-cities of Pithom and Rameses for Pharaoh. But the more they were crushed, the more they increased and spread, and men came to dread the sons of Israel. The Egyptians forced the sons of Israel into slavery, and made their lives unbearable with hard labour, work with clay and with brick, all kinds of work in the fields; they forced on them every kind of labour. Pharaoh then gave his subjects this command: “Throw all the boys born to the Hebrews into the river, but let all the girls live.”

Gospel: Matthew 10:34-11:1
Jesus instructed the Twelve as follows: “Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth: it is not peace I have come to bring, but a sword. For I have come to set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. A man’s enemies will be those of his own household. “Anyone who prefers father or mother to me is not worthy of me. Anyone who prefers son or daughter to me is not worthy of me. Anyone who does not take his cross and follow in my footsteps is not worthy of me. Anyone who finds his life will lose it; anyone who loses his life for my sake will find it. “Anyone who welcomes you welcomes me; and those who welcome me welcome the one who sent me. “Anyone who welcomes a prophet will have a prophet’s reward; and anyone who welcomes a holy man will have a holy man’s reward. ”If anyone gives so much as a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because he is a disciple, then I tell you solemnly, he will most certainly not lose his reward.” When Jesus had finished instructing his twelve disciples he moved on from there to teach and preach in their towns.

Meditation
Today, the readings give us a concrete warning of what lies ahead for us Christians. We have a cross to bear valiantly in order to be worthy of the one we have chosen as our guide. Indeed, by his life and teaching, he kindles a fire of justice, truth and salvation, the acceptance and application of which can likely lead to a fission with those of us who hold the opposite doctrine. But this lost life is nothing compared to the one that will be gained by perseverance in what is good. Lord, we pray that you will hide our lives in you so that our affection for those around us will not lead us astray from your way of truth and life.

Dieu qui montres aux égarés la lumière de ta vérité pour qu’ils puissent reprendre le bon chemin, donne à tous ceux qui se déclarent chrétiens de rejeter ce qui est indigne de ce nom, et de rechercher ce qui lui fait honneur. Par Jésus Christ.
1ère lecture : Ex 1, 8-14.22
En ces jours-là, un nouveau roi vint au pouvoir en Egypte. Il n’avait pas connu Joseph. Il dit à son peuple: «Voici que le peuple des fils d’Israël est maintenant plus nombreux et plus puissant que nous. Prenons donc les dispositions voulues pour l’empêcher de se multiplier. Car, s’il y avait une guerre, il se joindrait à nos ennemis, combattrait contre nous, et ensuite il sortirait du pays. » On imposa donc aux fils d’Israël des chefs de corvée pour les accabler de travaux pénibles. Ils durent bâtir pour Pharaon les villes d’entrepôts de Pithome et de Ramsès. Mais, plus on les accablait, plus ils se multipliaient et proliféraient, ce qui les fit détester. Les Égyptiens soumirent les fils d’Israël à un dur esclavage et leur rendirent la vie intenable à force de corvées : préparation de l’argile et des briques et toutes sortes de travaux à la campagne; tous ces travaux étaient pour eux un dur esclavage. Pharaon donna cet ordre à tout son peuple : « Tous les fils qui naîtront aux Hébreux, jetez-les dans le Nil. Ne laissez vivre que les filles. »

R/ Comme un oiseau, nous avons échappé au filet du chasseur.
Sans le Seigneur qui était pour nous – qu’Israël le redise – sans le Seigneur qui était pour nous quand des hommes nous assaillirent, alors ils nous avalaient tout vivants, dans le feu de leur colère.
Alors le flot passait sur nous, le torrent nous submergeait ; alors nous étions submergés par les flots en furie. Béni soit le Seigneur qui n’a pas fait de nous la proie de leurs dents !
Comme un oiseau, nous avons échappé au filet du chasseur ; le filet s’est rompu : nous avons échappé. Notre secours est dans le nom du Seigneur qui a fait le ciel et la terre.

Oui, je suis venu séparer l’homme de son père, la fille de sa mère, la belle-fille de sa belle-mère : on aura pour ennemis les gens de sa propre maison. Celui qui aime son père ou sa mère plus que moi n’est pas digne de moi ; celui qui aime son fils ou sa fille plus que moi n’est pas digne de moi ; celui qui ne prend pas sa croix et ne me suit pas n’est pas digne de moi. Qui a trouvé sa vie la perdra; qui a perdu sa vie à cause de moi la trouvera. Qui vous accueille m’accueille; et qui m’accueille, accueille Celui qui m’a envoyé. Qui accueille un prophète en sa qualité de prophète recevra une récompense de prophète ; qui accueille un homme juste en sa qualité de juste recevra une récompense de juste. Méditation
Frères et sœurs, en ce jour, les textes nous avertissent concrètement sur ce qui nous attend, nous chrétiens. Nous avons une croix à porter vaillamment pour être dignes de celui que nous avons choisi pour guide. En effet, il allume par sa vie et son enseignement un feu de justice, de vérité et de salut dont l’acceptation et l’application ne peut conduire qu’à la rupture avec ceux des nôtres qui auront une doctrine opposé. Mais, cette vie perdue n’est rien de celle qui sera gagnée par la persévérance dans le bien. Seigneur nous te prions de cacher notre vie en toi afin que l’affection envers notre entourage ne nous éloigne pas de ton chemin de vérité et de vie.

I think that what we suffer in this life can never be compared to the glory, as yet unrevealed, which is waiting for us. The whole creation is eagerly waiting for God to reveal his sons. It was not for any fault on the part of creation that it was made unable to attain its purpose, it was made so by God; but creation still retains the hope of being freed, like us, from its slavery to decadence, to enjoy the same freedom and glory as the children of God. From the beginning till now the entire creation, as we know, has been groaning in one great act of giving birth; and not only creation, but all of us who possess the first-fruits of the Spirit, we too groan inwardly as we wait for our bodies to be set free.

As he sowed, some seeds fell on the edge of the path, and the birds came and ate them up. Others fell on patches of rock where they found little soil and sprang up straight away, because there was no depth of earth; but as soon as the sun came up they were scorched and, not having any roots, they withered away. Others fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them. Others fell on rich soil and produced their crop, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. Listen, anyone who has ears!” Then the disciples went up to him and asked, “Why do you talk to them in parables?” “Because” he replied, “the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven are revealed to you, but they are not revealed to them. For anyone who has will be given more, and he will have more than enough; but from anyone who has not, even what he has will be taken away. The reason I talk to them in parables is that they look without seeing and listen without hearing or understanding. So in their case this prophecy of Isaiah is being fulfilled: You will listen and listen again, but not understand, see and see again, but not perceive. For the heart of this nation has grown coarse, their ears are dull of hearing, and they have shut their eyes, for fear they should see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their heart, and be converted and be healed by me. “But happy are your eyes because they see, your ears because they hear! Meditation
Brothers and sisters, in the second reading we are reminded of our longing to be saved with the whole of creation. The Lord, in his love for us, responds to this desire by sending us his word which is spirit and life. This word is effective in itself, but it encounters obstacles in us due to our lack of preparation or real desire for conversion; hence the loss of the seed sown. Lord, by your Spirit, give us the strength to be this fertile ground, free from all barriers to your word of life, so that we may look and see, hear and understand, and bear fruit that lasts.

2ème lecture : Rm 8, 18-23
Frères, j’estime qu’il n’y a pas de commune mesure entre les souffrances du temps présent et la gloire qui va être révélée pour nous. En effet la création attend avec impatience la révélation des fils de Dieu. Car la création a été soumise au pouvoir du néant, non pas de son plein gré, mais à cause de celui qui l’a livrée à ce pouvoir. Pourtant, elle a gardé l’espérance d’être, elle aussi, libérée de l’esclavage de la dégradation, pour connaître la liberté de la gloire donnée aux enfants de Dieu. Nous le savons bien, la création tout entière gémit, elle passe par les douleurs d’un enfantement qui dure encore. Et elle n’est pas seule. Nous aussi, en nous-mêmes, nous gémissons ; nous avons commencé à recevoir l’Esprit Saint, mais nous attendons notre adoption et la rédemption de notre corps. – Parole du Seigneur.

Le cœur de ce peuple s’est alourdi: ils sont devenus durs d’oreille, ils se sont bouché les yeux, de peur que leurs yeux ne voient, que leurs oreilles n’entendent, que leur cœur ne comprenne, qu’ils ne se convertissent, – et moi, je les guérirai. Mais vous, heureux vos yeux puisqu’ils voient, et vos oreilles puisqu’elles entendent! Amen, je vous le dis : beaucoup de prophètes et de justes ont désiré voir ce que vous voyez, et ne l’ont pas vu, entendre ce que vous entendez, et ne l’ont pas entendu. Vous donc, écoutez ce que veut dire la parabole du semeur. Quand quelqu’un entend la parole du Royaume sans la comprendre, le Mauvais survient et s’empare de ce qui est semé dans son cœur : celui-là, c’est le terrain ensemencé au bord du chemin. Celui qui a reçu la semence sur un sol pierreux, c’est celui qui entend la Parole et la reçoit aussitôt avec joie; mais il n’a pas de racines en lui, il est l’homme d’un moment : quand vient la détresse ou la persécution à cause de la Parole, il trébuche aussitôt. Celui qui a reçu la semence dans les ronces, c’est celui qui entend la Parole ; mais le souci du monde et la séduction de la richesse étouffent la Parole, qui ne donne pas de fruit. Celui qui a reçu la semence dans la bonne terre, c’est celui qui entend la Parole et la comprend : il porte du fruit à raison de cent, ou soixante, ou trente pour un. »

Le Seigneur, dans son amour pour nous, répond à ce désir en nous envoyant sa parole qui est esprit et vie. Celle-ci est efficace en elle-même, mais rencontre en nous des obstacles liés à notre manque de préparation ou de désir réel de conversion ; d’où la perte de la graine semé. Seigneur par ton Esprit, donnes nous la force d’être cette terre fertile, débarrassés de toute barrière à ta parole de vie, pour que nous regardions et voyons, entendions et comprenions pour porter du fruit qui demeure.

SAINT Bonaventure
He became a Franciscan in 1243 and studied philosophy and theology at the University of Paris. He became a famous teacher and philosopher, part of the extraordinary intellectual flowering of the 13th century. He was a friend and colleague of St Thomas Aquinas.

In the midst of the Church he opened his mouth, and the Lord filled him with the spirit of wisdom and understanding and clothed him in a robe of glory.

Grant, we pray, almighty God, that, just as we celebrate the heavenly birthday of the Bishop Saint Bonaventure, we may benefit from his great learning and constantly imitate the ardour of his charity. First reading: Genesis 49:29-33,50:15-26
Jacob gave his sons these instructions, “I am about to be gathered to my people. Bury me near my fathers, in the cave that is in the field of Ephron the Hittite, in the cave in the field at Machpelah, opposite Mamre, in the land of Canaan, which Abraham bought from Ephron the Hittite as a burial-plot. There Abraham was buried and his wife Sarah. There Isaac was buried and his wife Rebekah. There I buried Leah. I mean the field and the cave in it that were bought from the sons of Heth.” When Jacob had finished giving his instructions to his sons, he drew his feet up into the bed, and breathing his last was gathered to his people. Seeing that their father was dead, Joseph’s brothers said, “What if Joseph intends to treat us as enemies and repay us in full for all the wrong we did him?” So they sent this message to Joseph: “Before your father died he gave us this order: “You must say to Joseph: Oh forgive your brothers their crime and their sin and all the wrong they did you.” Now therefore, we beg you, forgive the crime of the servants of your father’s God.” Joseph wept at the message they sent to him. His brothers came themselves and fell down before him. “We present ourselves before you” they said “as your slaves.” But Joseph answered them, “Do not be afraid; is it for me to put myself in God’s place? The evil you planned to do me has by God’s design been turned to good, that he might bring about, as indeed he has, the deliverance of a numerous people. So you need not be afraid; I myself will provide for you and your dependants.” In this way he reassured them with words that touched their hearts. So Joseph stayed in Egypt with his father’s family; and Joseph lived a hundred and ten years. Joseph saw the third generation of Ephraim’s children, as also the children of Machir, Manasseh’s son, who were born on Joseph’s lap. At length Joseph said to his brothers, “I am about to die; but God will be sure to remember you kindly and take you back from this country to the land that he promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.” And Joseph made Israel’s sons swear an oath, “When God remembers you with kindness be sure to take my bones from here.” Joseph died at the age of a hundred and ten; they embalmed him and laid him in his coffin in Egypt.

Meditation
Jesus continues with his message of comfort and the promises of his recognition before the Father of those who have persevered without fear of the things that kill the body. “Whoever declares himself for me before men, I will also declare myself for him before my Father who is in heaven.” The proclamation is further reflected in the attitude of the Christian. So, are we consistent or do we deny Christ through our corrupt actions and choices? Let us not fear those who stir up social pressure and impose anti-values. Let us not fear those who kill the body without being able to reach the soul, but rather let us fear that which can make the soul as well as the body perish in Gehenna. Let us pray for perseverance on the right path.

Voyant que leur père était mort, les frères de Joseph se dirent : « Si jamais Joseph nous prenait en haine, s’il allait nous rendre tout le mal que nous lui avons fait… » Ils firent dire à Joseph : « Avant de mourir, ton père a exprimé cette volonté : “Vous demanderez ceci à Joseph : De grâce, pardonne à tes frères leur crime et leur péché. Oui, ils t’ont fait du mal, mais toi, maintenant, pardonne donc le crime des serviteurs du Dieu de ton père !” » En entendant ce message, Joseph pleura. Puis ses frères vinrent eux-mêmes se jeter à ses pieds et lui dire: « Voici que nous sommes tes esclaves. » Mais Joseph leur répondit : « Soyez sans crainte ! Vais-je prendre la place de Dieu. Vous aviez voulu me faire du mal, Dieu a voulu le changer en bien, afin d’accomplir ce qui se réalise aujourd’hui : préserver la vie d’un peuple nombreux. Soyez donc sans crainte : moi, je prendrai soin de vous et de vos jeunes enfants. » Il les réconforta par des paroles qui leur allaient au cœur. Joseph demeura en Égypte avec la famille de son père, et il vécut cent dix ans. Il vit les petits-enfants de son fils Éphraïm; quant aux enfants de Makir, fils de Manassé son autre fils, il les reçut sur ses genoux à leur naissance. Joseph dit à ses frères : « Je vais mourir. Dieu vous visitera et vous fera remonter de ce pays dans le pays qu’il a fait serment de donner à Abraham, Isaac et Jacob. » Joseph fit prêter serment aux fils d’Israël, en disant : « Quand Dieu vous visitera, vous ferez monter d’ici mes ossements. » Et Joseph mourut à cent dix ans.

Il suffit que le disciple soit comme son maître, et le serviteur, comme son seigneur. Si les gens ont traité de Belzébul le maître de maison, ce sera bien pire pour ceux de sa maison. Ne craignez donc pas ces gens-là ; rien n’est voilé qui ne sera dévoilé, rien n’est caché qui ne sera connu. Ce que je vous dis dans les ténèbres, dites-le en pleine lumière; ce que vous entendez au creux de l’oreille, proclamez-le sur les toits. Méditation
Jésus poursuit avec son message de réconfort et promet une reconnaissance auprès du Père, pour ceux qui auront persévéré sans craindre ce qui tue le corps. « Quiconque se déclarera pour moi devant les hommes, moi aussi je me déclarerai pour lui devant mon Père qui est aux cieux ». La proclamation se reflète davantage dans l’attitude du chrétien. Dès lors, sommes-nous cohérents ou renions-nous le Christ à travers nos actes et choix corrompus ? Ne craignons pas ceux qui agitent la pression sociale et imposent les antivaleurs. Ne craignons pas ceux qui tuent le corps sans pouvoir atteindre l’âme, craignons plutôt ce qui peut faire périr dans la géhenne aussi bien l’âme que le corps. Prions pour notre persévérance dans la bonne voie.

SAINT Camille de Lellis,

Passionné de jeu, Camille (1550-1614), quand il se convertit, essaie vainement de devenir franciscain. Sa vraie vocation est de travailler à remédier à l’état lamentable des malades dans les hôpitaux. Dans ce but, il fonde à Rome la ‘’Congrégation des Serviteurs des infirmes’’, qu’on appellera Camilliens. En 1584, il devient prêtre sur le conseil de Philippe Néri, et ne cesse de se dépenser au service des malades en oubliant ses propres souffrances.

Jacob ! » Il répondit : « Me voici.» Dieu reprit : « Je suis Dieu, le Dieu de ton père. Ne crains pas de descendre en Egypte, car là-bas je ferai de toi une grande nation. Ils prirent aussi leurs troupeaux et les biens qu’ils avaient acquis au pays de Canaan. Jacob arriva en Égypte avec toute sa descendance. Ainsi donc, ses fils et ses petits-fils, ses filles et ses petites-filles, bref toute sa descendance, il les emmena avec lui en Égypte. Jacob avait envoyé Juda en avant vers Joseph, pour préparer son arrivée dans le pays de Goshèn. Quand ils furent arrivés dans le pays de Goshen, Joseph fit atteler son char et monta à la rencontre de son père Israël. Dès qu’il le vit, il se jeta à son cou et pleura longuement dans ses bras. Israël dit à Joseph : « Maintenant que j’ai revu ton visage, je peux mourir, puisque tu es encore vivant ! ».

R/ Le salut des justes vient du Seigneur.
Fais confiance au Seigneur, agis bien, habite la terre et reste fidèle; mets ta joie dans le Seigneur : il comblera les désirs de ton cœur.
Il connaît les jours de l’homme intègre qui recevra un héritage impérissable. Pas de honte pour lui aux mauvais jours; aux temps de famine, il sera rassasié.
Évite le mal, fais ce qui est bien, et tu auras une habitation pour toujours, car le Seigneur aime le bon droit, il n’abandonne pas ses amis.
Le Seigneur est le salut pour les justes, leur abri au temps de la détresse. Le Seigneur les aide et les délivre, il les délivre de l’impie, il les sauve, car ils cherchent en lui leur refuge.

Méfiez-vous des hommes : ils vous livreront aux tribunaux et vous flagelleront dans leurs synagogues. Vous serez conduits devant des gouverneurs et des rois à cause de moi : il y aura là un témoignage pour eux et pour les païens. Quand on vous livrera, ne vous inquiétez pas de savoir ce que vous direz ni comment vous le direz: ce que vous aurez à dire vous sera donné à cette heure-là. Car ce n’est pas vous qui parlerez, c’est l’Esprit de votre Père qui parlera en vous. Le frère livrera son frère à la mort, et le père, son enfant; les enfants se dresseront contre leurs parents et les feront mettre à mort. Vous serez détestés de tous à cause de mon nom; mais celui qui aura persévéré jusqu’à la fin, celui-là sera sauvé. Quand on vous persécutera dans une ville, fuyez dans une autre. « Voici que moi, je vous envoie comme des brebis au milieu des loups ». En effet, la mission n’est pas sans risque. Les chemins ne sont pas toujours aplanis. Jésus en est conscient et met les douze en garde : « Soyez donc prudents ». En fait le premier loup auquel nous faisons face est notre propre ego à dompter, car le message de conversation s’adresse d’abord au missionnaire lui-même, pécheur parmi les pécheurs. Ensuite viennent les loups extérieurs dont la parole transperce et suscite violence. « Le frère livrera son frère à la mort […] à cause de mon nom ». Mais toujours, le Christ nous rassure de sa loyauté : « quand on vous livrera, ne vous inquiétez pas […] c’est l’Esprit de votre Père qui parlera en vous ».

Then turn away from evil and do good and you shall have a home for ever; for the Lord loves justice and will never forsake his friends.

You will be dragged before governors and kings for my sake, to bear witness before them and the pagans. But when they hand you over, do not worry about how to speak or what to say; what you are to say will be given to you when the time comes; because it is not you who will be speaking; the Spirit of your Father will be speaking in you. “Brother will betray brother to death, and the father his child; children will rise against their parents and have them put to death. You will be hated by all men on account of my name; but the man who stands firm to the end will be saved. “Behold, I send you out like sheep in the midst of wolves. Indeed, mission is not without risk. The paths are not always smooth. Jesus is aware of this and warns the twelve: “Be careful”. In fact, the first wolf we face is our own ego, which we have to tame, because the message is addressed first of all to the missionary himself, a sinner among sinners. Then come the external wolves whose word pierces and provokes violence. “Brother will deliver his brother to death […] for my name’s sake”. But Christ always reassures us of his loyalty: “When you are handed over, do not be alarmed […] it is the Spirit of your Father who will speak in you”.

sAINT Henri
Henri II (973-1024) fut toujours, avec sa femme Cunégonde, d’une grande charité envers les pauvres. Empereur de Germanie en 1022, il respecta la liberté de l’Église, tout veillant à la réformer et à la pourvoir d’évêques dignes de leur mission. Privé d’héritier en raison de la stérilité de son épouse, il institua le Christ comme légataire de ses biens.

Et, lorsque notre père a dit : “Repartez pour nous acheter un peu de nourriture”, nous lui avons répondu : “Nous ne pourrons pas repartir si notre plus jeune frère n’est pas avec nous, car nous ne pourrons pas être admis en présence de cet homme si notre plus jeune frère n’est pas avec nous.” Alors notre père, ton serviteur, nous a dit : “Vous savez bien que ma femme Rachel ne m’a donné que deux fils. Le premier a disparu. Sûrement, une bête féroce l’aura mis en pièces, et je ne l’ai jamais revu. Si vous emmenez encore celui-ci loin de moi et qu’il lui arrive malheur, vous ferez descendre misérablement mes cheveux blancs au séjour des morts. Joseph ne put se contenir devant tous les gens de sa suite, et il s’écria : « Faites sortir tout le monde. » Quand il n’y eut plus personne auprès de lui, il se fit reconnaître de ses frères. Il pleura si fort que les Égyptiens l’entendirent, et même la maison de Pharaon. Il dit à ses frères : « Je suis Joseph! Est-ce que mon père vit encore ? » Mais ses frères étaient incapables de lui répondre, tant ils étaient bouleversés de se trouver en face de lui. Alors Joseph dit à ses frères : « Approchez-vous de moi ». Ils s’approchèrent, et il leur dit : « Je suis Joseph, votre frère, que vous avez vendu pour qu’il soit emmené en Égypte. Mais maintenant ne vous affligez pas et ne soyez pas tourmentés de m’avoir vendu car c’est pour vous conserver la vie que Dieu m’a envoyé ici avant vous. ».

En ce temps-là, Jésus disait à ses Apôtres: « Sur votre route, proclamez que le royaume des Cieux est tout proche. Guérissez les malades, ressuscitez les morts purifiez les lépreux, expulsez les démons. Vous avez reçu gratuitement : donnez gratuitement. Ne vous procurez ni or ni argent, ni monnaie de cuivre à mettre dans vos ceintures, ni sac pour la route ni tunique de rechange, ni sandales, ni bâton. L’ouvrier, en effet, mérite sa nourriture. Dans chaque ville ou village où vous entrerez, informez-vous pour savoir qui est digne de vous accueillir, et restez là jusqu’à votre départ. En entrant dans la maison, saluez ceux qui l’habitent. Méditation
Jésus envoie les douze. La mission implique trois dimensions: 1. LE MANDAT qui octroie légitimité et autorité au missionnaire qui va au nom du maître. La mission est celle de Dieu et le mandat se reçoit, il ne s’improvise pas. 2. L’OBJET de la mission est claire : proclamer l’Évangile, guérir les malades, expulser les démons, purifier les lépreux et ressusciter les morts. Ce n’est pas accomplir des agendas parallèles et obscurs. 3. LA CONSIGNE consiste en la conduite à tenir pendant la mission. Il s’agit parfois des conseils ou encore des restrictions disciplinaires. Séjournez partout où vous serez accueillis, sortez des maisons ou des villes où vous ne le serez pas.

SAINT Henri
He was born in Bavaria in 973. He became Holy Roman Emperor in 1014. He was noted for his support for the reform of the Church and for his encouragement of its missionary activity. He set up many bishoprics, and he and his wife Cunegunda founded many monasteries. He died in 1024.

Judah went up to Joseph and said, “May it please my lord, let your servant have a word privately with my lord. Do not be angry with your servant, for you are like Pharaoh himself. My lord questioned his servants, “Have you father or brother?” And we said to my lord, “We have an old father, and a younger brother born of his old age. His brother is dead, so he is the only one left of his mother, and his father loves him.” Then you said to your servants, “Bring him down to me that my eyes may look on him.” But you said to your servants, “If your youngest brother does not come down with you, you will not be admitted to my presence again.” When we went back to your servant my father, we repeated to him what my lord had said. The Lord called down a famine on the land; he broke the staff that supported them. He had sent a man before them, Joseph, sold as a slave.
His feet were put in chains, his neck was bound with iron, until what he said came to pass and the word of the Lord proved him true.
Then the king sent and released him the ruler of the people set him free, making him master of his house and ruler of all he possessed.

Gospel: Matthew 10:7-15
Jesus instructed the Twelve as follows: “As you go, proclaim that the kingdom of heaven is close at hand. Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out devils. You received without charge, give without charge. Provide yourselves with no gold or silver, not even with a few coppers for your purses, with no haversack for the journey or spare tunic or footwear or a staff, for the workman deserves his keep. “Whatever town or village you go into, ask for someone trustworthy and stay with him until you leave. As you enter his house, salute it, and if the house deserves it, let your peace descend upon it; if it does not, let your peace come back to you. And if anyone does not welcome you or listen to what you have to say, as you walk out of the house or town shake the dust from your feet. I tell you solemnly, on the day of Judgement it will not go as hard with the land of Sodom and Gomorrah as with that town.”

Meditation
Jesus sends the twelve on a mission with a three-fold articulation: 1. The MANDATE that grants legitimacy and authority to the missionary who goes in the name of the Master. The mission is God’s and the mandate is received, not improvised. 2. THE PURPOSE of the mission is clear: to proclaim the Gospel, to heal the sick, to expel demons, to cleanse lepers and to raise the dead. It is not to fulfil any parallel and obscure agenda. 3. The INSTRUCTIONS consist of the conduct to be followed during the mission. It may be advice or disciplinary restrictions. Stay wherever you are welcome, leave homes or cities where you are not. For a fruitful mission, just as for a successful Christian life, all we need to do is pay attention to these guidelines and live by Jesus’ words.
