Saint Thierry
Thierry renonça à son mariage le jour même de sa célébration. Il se fit ordonner prêtre et fonda une abbaye qui porta plus tard son nom. Il en fut le premier abbé.

Le Seigneur est la force de son peuple, le protecteur et le sauveur de ses fidèles. Sauve-nous, Seigneur, veille sur nous, conduis-nous toujours.
Prière d’ouverture
Fais-nous vivre à tout moment, Seigneur, dans l’amour et le respect de ton saint nom, toi qui ne cesses jamais de guider ceux que tu enracines solidement dans ton amour. Par Jésus.
1ère lecture : Gn 18, 1-15
En ces jours-là, aux chênes de Mambré, le Seigneur apparut à Abraham, qui était assis à l’entrée de la tente. C’était l’heure la plus chaude du jour. Abraham leva les yeux, et il vit trois hommes qui se tenaient debout près de lui. Dès qu’il les vit, il courut à leur rencontre depuis l’entrée de la tente et se prosterna jusqu’à terre. Il dit : « Mon seigneur, si j’ai pu trouver grâce à tes yeux, ne passe pas sans t’arrêter près de ton serviteur. Permettez que l’on vous apporte un peu d’eau, vous vous laverez les pieds, et vous vous étendrez sous cet arbre. Je vais chercher de quoi manger, et vous reprendrez des forces avant d’aller plus loin, puisque vous êtes passés près de votre serviteur ! » Ils répondirent : « Fais comme tu l’as dit. » Abraham se hâta d’aller trouver Sara dans sa tente, et il dit : « Prends vite trois grandes mesures de fleur de farine, pétris la pâte et fais des galettes. » Puis Abraham courut au troupeau, il prit un veau gras et tendre, et le donna à un serviteur, qui se hâta de le préparer. Il prit du fromage blanc, du lait, le veau que l’on avait apprêté, et les déposa devant eux; il se tenait debout près d’eux, sous l’arbre, pendant qu’ils mangeaient. Ils lui demandèrent : « Où est Sara, ta femme ? » Il répondit: « Elle est à l’intérieur de la tente. » Le voyageur reprit: « Je reviendrai chez toi au temps fixé pour la naissance, et à ce moment-là, Sara, ta femme, aura un fils. » Or, Sara écoutait par-derrière, à l’entrée de la tente. – Abraham et Sara étaient très avancés en âge, et Sara avait cessé d’avoir ce qui arrive aux femmes. Elle se mit à rire en elle-même ; elle se disait : « J’ai pourtant passé l’âge du plaisir, et mon seigneur est un vieillard ! » Le Seigneur Dieu dit à Abraham : « Pourquoi Sara a-t-elle ri, en disant : “Est-ce que vraiment j’aurais un enfant, vieille comme je suis ?” Y a- t-il une merveille que le Seigneur ne puisse accomplir ? Au moment où je reviendrai chez toi, au temps fixé pour la naissance, Sara aura un fils. » Sara mentit en disant : « Je n’ai pas ri », car elle avait peur. Mais le Seigneur répliqua : « Si, tu as ri. »

R/ Le Seigneur se souvient de son amour.

Il s’est penché sur son humble servante; désormais tous les âges me diront bienheureuse. Le Puissant fit pour moi des merveilles ; Saint est son nom !
Sa miséricorde s’étend d’âge en âge sur ceux qui le craignent. Il comble de biens les affamés, renvoie les riches les mains vides.
Il relève Israël son serviteur, il se souvient de son amour, de la promesse faite à nos pères, en faveur d’Abraham et sa descendance à jamais.

En ce temps-là, comme Jésus était entré à Capharnaüm, un centurion s’approcha de lui et le supplia : « Seigneur, mon serviteur est couché, à la maison, paralysé, et il souffre terriblement. » Jésus lui dit : « Je vais aller moi-même le guérir.» Le centurion reprit: « Seigneur, je ne suis pas digne que tu entres sous mon toit, mais dis seulement une parole et mon serviteur sera guéri. Moi-même qui suis soumis à une autorité, j’ai des soldats sous mes ordres ; à l’un, je dis : “Va”, et il va ; à un autre : “Viens”, et il vient, et à mon esclave : “Fais ceci”, et il le fait.» À ces mots, Jésus fut dans l’admiration et dit à ceux qui le suivaient : « Amen, je vous le déclare, chez personne en Israël, je n’ai trouvé une telle foi. Aussi je vous le dis : Beaucoup viendront de l’orient et de l’occident et prendront place avec Abraham, Isaac et Jacob au festin du royaume des Cieux, mais les fils du Royaume seront jetés dans les ténèbres du dehors ; là, il y aura des pleurs et des grincements de dents. » Et Jésus dit au centurion : « Rentre chez toi, que tout se passe pour toi selon ta foi. » Et, à l’heure même, le serviteur fut guéri. Comme Jésus entrait chez Pierre, dans sa maison, il vit sa belle-mère couchée avec de la fièvre. Il lui toucha la main, et la fièvre la quitta. Elle se leva, et elle le servait. Le soir venu, on présenta à Jésus beaucoup de possédés. D’une parole, il expulsa les esprits et, tous ceux qui étaient atteints d’un mal, il les guérit, pour que soit accomplie la parole prononcée par le prophète Isaïe : Il a pris nos souffrances, il a porté nos maladies.
Prière sur les offrandes
Accepte, Seigneur, le sacrifice de louange et de pardon, afin que nos cœurs, purifiés par sa puissance, t’offrent un amour qui réponde à ton amour. Par Jésus.

Tous ont les yeux sur toi, Seigneur, ils espèrent, et tu donnes à chacun sa nourriture.
Prière après la communion
Renouvelés par le corps et le sang de ton Fils, nous implorons ta bonté, Seigneur : fais qu’à jamais rachetés, nous possédions dans ton Royaume ce que nous célébrons en chaque Eucharistie. Par Jésus.
Méditation
Les lectures de ce jour nous amènent à méditer sur trois axes : 1. Savoir identifier le Seigneur de passage. Abraham et le centurion l’ont fait chacun dans son contexte. De même sachons reconnaitre le Christ en perpétuel cheminement avec nous, tant dans notre vie de foi qu’en nos frères et sœurs. 2. L’accueil du Seigneur, chacun à sa manière. Abraham fait pétrir de la farine, pierre reçoit Jésus chez lui, le centurion, lui, dit ces humbles paroles que nous méditons à chaque Eucharistie : « je ne suis pas digne de te recevoir… » Invitation à l’écoute de la parole dans une pauvreté de cœur et à la bienveillance quotidienne. 3. L’action de grâce. Le magnificat s’inscrit en réponse en la promesse de conception faite à Abraham et Sara. De même sachons témoigner des merveilles de Dieu dans nos vies.

Blessed Junipero Serra
He was born on the Spanish island of Mallorca, and became a Franciscan. Over a period of fifteen years he founded nine missions with about six thousand converts. He frequently came into conflict with the authorities over their treatment of the native population, but nevertheless, when he died, he was buried with full military honours. He was beatified in 1988.

First reading: Genesis 18:1-15
The Lord appeared to Abraham at the Oak of Mamre while he was sitting by the entrance of the tent during the hottest part of the day. He looked up, and there he saw three men standing near him. As soon as he saw them he ran from the entrance of the tent to meet them, and bowed to the ground. “My lord,” he said “I beg you, if I find favour with you, kindly do not pass your servant by. A little water shall be brought; you shall wash your feet and lie down under the tree. Let me fetch a little bread and you shall refresh yourselves before going further. R/ The Lord remembered his mercy.
My soul glorifies the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God, my Saviour.

When Jesus went into Capernaum a centurion came up and pleaded with him. “Sir,” he said “my servant is lying at home paralysed, and in great pain.” “I will come myself and cure him” said Jesus. The centurion replied, “Sir, I am not worthy to have you under my roof; just give the word and my servant will be cured. For I am under authority myself, and have soldiers under me; and I say to one man: Go, and he goes; to another: Come here, and he comes; to my servant: Do this, and he does it.” When Jesus heard this he was astonished and said to those following him, “I tell you solemnly, nowhere in Israel have I found faith like this. And I tell you that many will come from east and west to take their places with Abraham and Isaac and Jacob at the feast in the kingdom of heaven; but the subjects of the kingdom will be turned out into the dark, where there will be weeping and grinding of teeth.” And to the centurion Jesus said, “Go back, then; you have believed, so let this be done for you.” And the servant was cured at that moment. And going into Peter’s house Jesus found Peter’s mother-in-law in bed with fever. He touched her hand and the fever left her, and she got up and began to wait on him. That evening they brought him many who were possessed by devils. He cast out the spirits with a word and cured all who were sick. This was to fulfil the prophecy of Isaiah: He took our sicknesses away and carried our diseases for us.

Meditation
Today’s readings lead us to meditate on three points: 1. Identifying the Lord along the way. Abraham and the centurion did so, each in his own context. In the same way, let us recognize Christ in the perpetual journey with us, both in our life of faith and in our brothers and sisters. 2. Welcoming the Lord, each in his own way. Abraham kneads flour, Peter welcomes Jesus into his home, the centurion says these humble words that we meditate on at each Eucharist: “I am not worthy to receive you…” This is an invitation to listen to the word in humility of heart, and to daily benevolence. 3. Giving thanks. The Magnificat is a response to the promise of conception made to Abraham and Sarah. In the same way, let us bear witness to the wonders of God in our lives. And in so doing, never forget to manifest your thanksgiving to God for his gifts to you.

Saint Martial de Limoges
Probablement originaire d’Orient, envoyé par un pontife romain, il arrive en Limousin, prêche à Toulx-Sainte-Croix, à Ahun. Parvenu à Limoges, il s’y fixe, fonde un centre chrétien, convertit un certain nombre d’habitants appartenant notamment à la haute société et installe un sanctuaire hors de l’agglomération.

J’établirai mon alliance avec lui, comme une alliance éternelle avec sa descendance après lui. Au sujet d’Ismaël, je t’ai bien entendu : je le bénis, je le ferai fructifier et se multiplier à l’infini; il engendrera douze princes, et je ferai de lui une grande nation. Quant à mon alliance, c’est avec Isaac que je l’établirai, avec l’enfant que Sara va te donner l’an prochain à pareille époque. » Lorsque Dieu eut fini de parler avec Abraham, il s’éleva loin de lui.

Jésus lui dit : « Attention, ne dis rien à personne, mais va te montrer au prêtre. Et donne l’offrande que Moïse a prescrite : ce sera pour les gens un témoignage. »

Méditation
Les lépreux en Israël comme dans tout le monde antique étaient bannis de communauté des hommes. Ils devaient séjourner hors de la ville et pouvaient tout au plus mendier aux portes. Mais ce matin, Jésus étend la main. Il veut toucher l’intouchable et, faire sauter tous les tabous. Il veut que l’homme désormais sente une main fraternelle posée sur lui. Et voilà le lépreux qui entend au fond de son être ces mots qu’il avait lui-même soufflés à Jésus : « Je le veux, sois purifié ! » Une seule parole du Christ suffit pour effacer toute souffrance, pour reconnecter l’homme à sa société. La puissance de cette parole demeure encore aujourd’hui, car, si Jésus le veut maintenant, il peut nous guérir de nos lèpres : lèpres du cœur, de l’intelligence, du rejet, de l’intolérance, de l’ironie. De tout cela Seigneur, si tu le veux, tu peux nous guérir. C’est là notre prière audacieuse et confiante de cette journée.

THE FIRST MARTYRS OF THE SEE OF ROME
When the city of Rome had been devastated by fire in the year 64, the emperor Nero launched a persecution against the Christians, who were thrown to the wild beasts in the arena or soaked in tar and used as living torches. Their deaths are documented in the writings of the Roman historian Tacitus and in Pope St Clement’s letter to the Corinthians.

Meditation
Lepers in Israel, as in the entire ancient world, were banished from the community of men. They had to stay outside the city and could at most beg at the gates. But today, Jesus extends his hand. He touches the untouchable and breaks all taboos. He wants the man to feel a brotherly hand placed on him. And here is the leper who hears in the depths of his being these words whispered by Jesus: “I want it, be cleansed!” A single word from Christ is enough to erase all suffering, to reconnect man to his society. This Word remains ever-powerful today, because if Jesus wants it now, he can cure us of our leprosy: leprosy of the heart, of intelligence, of rejection, of intolerance, of irony. From all this, Lord, if you want, you can heal us. This is our bold and confident prayer for this day.

SAINT PIERRE ET PAUL
Apôtres
‘’Pacifique’’, Irénée (vers 130-208) mérite bien son nom. Évêque de Lyon en 177 après saint Pothin, il apaise la querelle à propos de la date de Pâques, survenue entre le pape Victor et les Eglises d’Asie. Plus encore, il travaille à la paix par ses écrits contre les hérésies qui divisent les chrétiens en ruinant la foi qui les unit.
Antienne d’ouverture
Rendons grâce en cette fête des Apôtres Pierre et Paul. Par leur martyre, ils ont planté l’Église. Ils ont partagé la coupe du Seigneur et sont devenus ses amis.
Prière d’ouverture
Seigneur, tu nous as donné ce jour de sainte joie pour fêter les bienheureux Apôtres Pierre et Paul ; accorde à ton Église une fidélité parfaite à leur enseignement, puisqu’elle reçut par eux la première annonce de la foi. Par Jésus.
1ère lecture : Act. 12, 1-11
À cette époque, le roi Hérode Agrippa se saisit de certains membres de l’Église pour les mettre à mal. Il supprima Jacques, frère de Jean, en le faisant décapiter. Voyant que cette mesure plaisait aux Juifs, il décida aussi d’arrêter Pierre. C’était les jours des Pains sans levain. Il le fit appréhender, emprisonner, et placer sous la garde de quatre escouades de quatre soldats ; il voulait le faire comparaître devant le peuple après la Pâque. Tandis que Pierre était ainsi détenu dans la prison, l’Église priait Dieu pour lui avec insistance. Hérode allait le faire comparaître. Or, Pierre dormait, cette nuit-là, entre deux soldats; il était attaché avec deux chaînes et des gardes étaient en faction devant la porte de la prison. Et voici que survint l’ange du Seigneur, et une lumière brilla dans la cellule. Il réveilla Pierre en le frappant au côté et dit : « Lève-toi vite.» Les chaînes lui tombèrent des mains. Alors l’ange lui dit : « Mets ta ceinture et chausse tes sandales.» Ce que fit Pierre. L’ange ajouta : «Enveloppe-toi de ton manteau et suis-moi.» Pierre sortit derrière lui, mais il ne savait pas que tout ce qui arrivait grâce à l’ange était bien réel ; il pensait qu’il avait une vision. Passant devant un premier poste de garde, puis devant un second, ils arrivèrent au portail de fer donnant sur la ville. Celui-ci s’ouvrit tout seul devant eux. Une fois dehors, ils s’engagèrent dans une rue, et aussitôt l’ange le quitta. Magnifiez avec moi le Seigneur, exaltons tous ensemble son nom. Je cherche le Seigneur, il me répond : de toutes mes frayeurs, il me délivre.
Qui regarde vers lui resplendira, sans ombre ni trouble au visage. Un pauvre crie ; le Seigneur entend : il le sauve de toutes ses angoisses.
L’ange du Seigneur campe alentour, pour libérer ceux qui le craignent. Goûtez et voyez : le Seigneur est bon ! Heureux qui trouve en lui son refuge !
2ème lecture : 2 Tm 4, 6-8.17-18
Bien-aimé, je suis déjà offert en sacrifice, le moment de mon départ est venu. J’ai mené le bon combat, j’ai achevé ma course, j’ai gardé la foi. Je n’ai plus qu’à recevoir la couronne de la justice : le Seigneur, le juste juge, me la remettra en ce jour-là, et non seulement à moi, mais aussi à tous ceux qui auront désiré avec amour sa Manifestation glorieuse. Tous m’ont abandonné. Le Seigneur, lui, m’a assisté. Il m’a rempli de force pour que, par moi, la proclamation de l’Évangile s’accomplisse jusqu’au bout et que toutes les nations l’entendent. J’ai été arraché à la gueule du lion ; le Seigneur m’arrachera encore à tout ce qu’on fait pour me nuire. Il me sauvera et me fera entrer dans son Royaume céleste. Après nous avoir fortifiés par cette Eucharistie, Seigneur, fais-nous vivre dans ton Eglise comme les premiers chrétiens : assidus à la fraction du pain, attentifs à l’enseignement des Apôtres, nous serons un seul cœur, une seule âme, solidement enracinés dans ton amour. Par Jésus.
Méditation
Saint Pierre et Saint Paul sont les fondements de l’Eglise primitive et, par conséquent, de notre foi chrétienne. « Le Fils de l’homme, qui est-il, d’après ce que disent les hommes ? » Le Pape François prévient : « Nous pouvons marcher autant que nous voulons, nous pouvons construire beaucoup de choses, mais si nous ne nous confessons pas à Jésus, quelque chose ne fonctionne pas. Nous finirons par être une ONG d’assistance, mais pas l’Eglise, épouse du Seigneur ». Cela, nous le voyons tous les jours : ce Jésus auquel nous croyons est raillé, outragé et Sali. Il est devenu le sujet privilégié des moqueurs. Mais rien ne doit arrêter l’annonce de l’Evangile. Comme au temps de Pierre et de Paul, le Seigneur compte sur notre foi. Et c’est sur cette foi qu’il veut construire son Eglise aujourd’hui. La foi des porteurs aujourd’hui peut conduire au Christ plusieurs âmes comme l’image de l’Evangile. Si nous sommes chrétiens, c’est parce que d’autres ont soulevé le toit et nous ont placés devant Dieu. Ce toit c’est celui de notre société indifférente ou hostile à la foi aujourd’hui. Ne soyons pas des chrétiens tièdes.

SAINTS PETER AND PAUL, Apostles
Feast
Two pillars of our faith: Peter’s original name was Simon. Christ Himself gave him the name Cephas or Peter (rock) when they first met and later confirmed it. The first Pope, Peter is the Prince of the Apostles.
Converted from Judaism, Paul did much to advance Christianity among the gentiles, and is considered one of the primary sources of early Church doctrine.
Entrance Antiphon
These are the ones who, living in the flesh, planted the Church with their blood; they drank the chalice of the Lord and became the friends of God.
Collect
O God, who on the Solemnity of the Apostles Peter and Paul, give us the noble and holy joy of this day, grant, we pray, that your Church may, in all things, follow the teaching of those through whom she received the beginnings of right religion. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
First reading: Acts 12:1-11
King Herod started persecuting certain members of the Church. He beheaded James the brother of John, and when he saw that this pleased the Jews, he decided to arrest Peter as well. This was during the days of Unleavened Bread, and he put Peter in prison, assigning four squads of four soldiers each to guard him in turns. Herod meant to try Peter in public after the end of Passover week. All the time Peter was under guard the Church prayed to God for him unremittingly. On the night before Herod was to try him, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, fastened with double chains, while guards kept watch at the main entrance to the prison. Then suddenly the angel of the Lord stood there, and the cell was filled with light. He tapped Peter on the side and woke him. “Get up!” he said. “Hurry!” – and the chains fell from his hands. The angel then said, “Put on your belt and sandals.” After he had done this, the angel next said, “Wrap your cloak round you and follow me.” Peter followed him, but had no idea that what the angel did was all happening in reality; he thought he was seeing a vision. They passed through two guard posts one after the other, and reached the iron gate leading to the city. This opened of its own accord; they went through it and had walked the whole length of one street when suddenly the angel left him. It was only then that Peter came to himself. “Now I know it is all true”, he said. “The Lord really did send his angel and has saved me from Herod and from all that the Jewish people were so certain would happen to me.”

Grant us, O Lord, who have been renewed by this Sacrament, so to live in the Church, that, persevering in the breaking of the Bread and in the teaching of the Apostles, we may be one heart and one soul, made steadfast in your love. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
St. Peter and St. Paul are the foundations of the early church and, therefore, of our Christian faith. “The Son of Man, who is he, according to what men say?” Pope Francis warns, “We can walk all we want, we can build many things, but if we don’t confess to Jesus, then something is wrong. We will end up being a welfare NGO, but not the Church, the bride of the Lord. We see this every day: the Jesus we believe in is mocked, insulted and maligned. He has become the favourite subject of mockers. But nothing should stop the proclamation of the Gospel. As in the days of Peter and Paul, the Lord counts on our faith. And it is on this faith that he wants to build his Church today. The faith of Christians today can lead many souls to Christ as the Gospel proclaims. If we are Christians, it is because others raised the standards and placed us before God. The challenges may be many in our society, indifferent or hostile to faith today. But let us not be lukewarm Christians.

SAINT IRENEE
‘’Pacifique’’, Irénée mérite bien son nom. Évêque de Lyon en 177 après saint Pothin, il apaise la querelle à propos de la date de paques, survenue entre le pape Victor et les églises d’Asie. Plus encore, il travaille à la paix par ses écrits contre les hérésies qui divisent les chrétiens en ruinant la foi qui les unit. Théologien de l’église, il montre pourquoi son universalité ne nuit pas à son unité : c’est qu’elle est fidèle à la tradition apostolique dont l’église de Rome veut être la gardienne. Irénée, disciple de jean par l’intermédiaire de saint Polycarpe, est témoin de cette tradition.

Saint Irénée avait sur les lèvres la doctrine de vérité ; Dans la paix et la droiture, il marchait avec le Seigneur.
Prière d’ouverture
Tu as donné, Seigneur, à l’évêque saint Irénée de faire triompher la vraie doctrine et affermir la paix dans l’Église ; par son intercession, réveille notre foi et notre charité pour que nous cherchions en toute chose ce qui favorise l’union entre les hommes. Par Jésus.
1ère lecture : Gn 15, 1-12.17-18a
En ces jours-là, la parole du Seigneur fut adressée à Abram dans une vision: « Ne crains pas, Abram ! Je suis un bouclier pour toi. Ta récompense sera très grande. » Abram répondit : « Mon Seigneur Dieu, que pourrais-tu donc me donner ? Je m’en vais sans enfant, et l’héritier de ma maison, c’est Élièzer de Damas. » Abram dit encore : « Tu ne m’as pas donné de descendance, et c’est un de mes serviteurs qui sera mon héritier.» Alors cette parole du Seigneur fut adressée à Abram : « Ce n’est pas lui qui sera ton héritier, mais quelqu’un de ton sang. » Puis il le fit sortir et lui dit: « Regarde le ciel, et compte les étoiles, si tu le peux… » Et il déclara : « Telle sera ta descendance! » Abram eut foi dans le Seigneur et le Seigneur estima qu’il était juste. Puis il dit : « Je suis le Seigneur, qui t’ai fait sortir d’Our en Chaldée pour te donner ce pays en héritage. » Abram répondit : « Seigneur mon Dieu, comment vais-je savoir que je l’ai en héritage ? » Le Seigneur lui dit : « Prends-moi une génisse de trois ans, une chèvre de trois ans, un bélier de trois ans, une tourterelle et une jeune colombe. » Abram prit tous ces animaux, les partagea en deux, et plaça chaque moitié en face de l’autre ; mais il ne partagea pas les oiseaux. Comme les rapaces descendaient sur les cadavres, Abram les chassa. Au coucher du soleil, un sommeil mystérieux tomba sur Abram, une sombre et profonde frayeur tomba sur lui. Après le coucher du soleil, il y eut des ténèbres épaisses. Alors un brasier fumant et une torche enflammée passèrent entre les morceaux d’animaux. Ce jour-là, le Seigneur conclut une alliance avec Abram en ces termes : « À ta descendance je donne le pays que voici, depuis le Torrent d’Égypte jusqu’au Grand Fleuve, l’Euphrate. »

En ce temps-là, Jésus disait à ses disciples : « Méfiez-vous des faux prophètes qui viennent à vous déguisés en brebis, alors qu’au-dedans ce sont des loups voraces. C’est à leurs fruits que vous les reconnaîtrez. Va-t-on cueillir du raisin sur des épines, ou des figues sur des chardons ? C’est ainsi que tout arbre bon donne de beaux fruits, et que l’arbre qui pourrit donne des fruits mauvais. Un arbre bon ne peut pas donner des fruits mauvais, ni un arbre qui pourrit donner de beaux fruits. Tout arbre qui ne donne pas de beaux fruits est coupé et jeté au feu. Donc, c’est à leurs fruits que vous les reconnaîtrez. »
Prière sur les offrandes
En célébrant la mémoire de saint Irénée, nous t’offrons avec joie, Seigneur, ce sacrifice : qu’il te rende gloire et nous obtienne l’amour de ta vérité, pour garder intacte la foi de l’Église et inébranlable son unité. Par Jésus.

« Demeurez en moi, comme moi en vous, dit le Seigneur. Celui qui demeure en moi, et en qui je demeure, celui-là donne beaucoup de fruit. »

Par cette communion à tes mystères, Seigneur, augmente en nous la foi : c’est la foi, gardée jusqu’à la mort, qui a fait la gloire de saint Irénée ; que cette même foi sincèrement vécue nous obtienne la justification ; Par Jésus.
Méditation
« Méfiez-vous des faux prophètes ». Les affirmations de Jésus à ce sujet sont d’une telle simplicité qu’on dirait qu’elles sont simplistes. Mais il est juste de dire qu’elles ne le sont pas du tout! Elles ne le sont, comme notre vie de tous les jours ne l’est pas du tout non plus. C’est à leurs fruits que nous les reconnaitrons. Beaucoup aujourd’hui séduisent les hommes par leurs belles paroles. Aujourd’hui bien de voix se réclament du Seigneur notre Dieu, mais elles ne rendent pas un son identique ; nous aimerions bien savoir maintenant qui est faux prophète et qui est prophète authentique, même si de sa bouche sortent des choses inhabituelles. Puisse le seigneur nous donner d’être moins attentifs à leurs paroles qu’à leurs fruits, afin de reconnaitre ceux qui parlent vraiment au nom de Jésus-Christ notre sauveur.

SAINT IRENAEUS
Irenaeus was born in Smyrna, (now Izmir in Turkey) and emigrated to Lyons, in France, where he eventually became the bishop. Irenaeus fought against many heresies especially the Gnostics and Valentinians.
Entrance Antiphon: Mal 2: 6
The law of truth was in his mouth; no dishonesty was found on his lips. He walked with me in integrity and peace, and turned many away from evil.
Collect
O God, who called the Bishop Saint Irenaeus to confirm true doctrine and the peace of the Church, grant, we pray, through his intercession, that, being renewed in faith and charity, we may always be intent on fostering unity and concord. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
First reading: Genesis 15: 1-12, 17-18
It happened that the word of the Lord was spoken to Abram in a vision, “Have no fear, Abram, I am your shield; your reward will be very great.” “My Lord,” Abram replied, “what do you intend to give me? Can people pick grapes from thorns, or figs from thistles? In the same way, a sound tree produces good fruit but a rotten tree bad fruit. A sound tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor a rotten tree bear good fruit. Any tree that does not produce good fruit is cut down and thrown on the fire. I repeat, you will be able to tell them by their fruits.”

May the sacrifice we offer you with joy on the heavenly birthday of Saint Irenaeus bring you glory, O Lord, and instil in us a love of the truth, so that we may keep the Church’s faith inviolate and her unity secure. Through Christ our Lord.

Meditation
“Beware of false prophets. Jesus’ statements on this theme are so simple that they sound simplistic. But they are not at all! Men are recognised by their fruits. Many are seductive with their beautiful words. Today, many voices claim to be from the Lord our God, but they do not sound the same; we are lost in wondering on who is a false prophet and who is a true prophet, even if unusual things are done by many of them. May the Lord help us to be less attentive to their words than to their fruits, in order to recognise those who truly speak in the name of Jesus Christ our Saviour.

SAINT CYRIL OF ALEXANDRIA
St. Cyril of Alexandria, Bishop and Doctor of the Church was born at Alexandria, Egypt. He was nephew of the patriarch of that city, Theophilus. Cyril wrote treatises that clarified the doctrines of the Trinity and the Incarnation from heretical interpretations.

The Lord is the strength of his people, a saving refuge for the one he has anointed. Save your people, Lord, and bless your heritage, and govern them for ever.

First reading: Genesis 13: 2, 5-18
Abram was a very rich man, with livestock, silver and gold. Lot, who was travelling with Abram, had flocks and cattle of his own, and tents too. The land was not sufficient to accommodate them both at once, for they had too many possessions to be able to live together. Dispute broke out between the herdsmen of Abram’s livestock and those of Lot’s. (The Canaanites and the Perizzites were then living in the land.) Accordingly Abram said to Lot, ‘Let there be no dispute between me and you, nor between my herdsmen and yours, for we are brothers. Is not the whole land open before you? Part company with me: if you take the left, I will go right; if you take the right, I will go left.’ Looking round, Lot saw all the Jordan plain, irrigated everywhere – this was before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah – like the garden of the Lord or the land of Egypt, as far as Zoar. So Lot chose all the Jordan plain for himself and moved off eastwards. Thus they parted company: Abram settled in the land of Canaan; Lot settled among the towns of the plain, pitching his tents on the outskirts of Sodom. Now the people of Sodom were vicious men, great sinners against the Lord. The Lord said to Abram after Lot had parted company with him, ‘Look all round from where you are towards the north and the south, towards the east and the west. All the land within sight I will give to you and your descendants for ever. I will make your descendants like the dust on the ground: when men succeed in counting the specks of dust on the ground, then they will be able to count your descendants! Come, travel through the length and breadth of the land, for I mean to give it to you.’ So Abram went with his tents to settle at the Oak of Mamre, at Hebron, and there he built an altar to the Lord.

Meditation
Jesus comes today to preach gentleness and to show us an example, but in his eyes, naivety is not a virtue, especially when it compromises his message. Only God has the power to wisely shake up man’s reticence. As for us who are only messengers, our testimony requires a lot of discernment. For there are deadlines that we cannot shorten, crises that we must respect. One of our greatest miseries that we deal with all day long is that we bring everything down to our desires. From this comes most of our sadness: we expect everything from others and we resent them for not giving us everything; we would like to be recognised, to be valued, to be appreciated in our tastes or choices. However, Jesus Christ asks us not to let ourselves be served, but to serve and give our life; not to be carried, but to carry the burden of our brother; not to be understood, but to understand the other. Give us your Spirit, Lord, and come to act in each of us.

Antienne d’ouverture : Ps 27, 8-9
Le Seigneur est la force de son peuple, le protecteur et le sauveur de ses fidèles. Sauve-nous, Seigneur, veille sur nous, conduis-nous toujours.
Prière d’ouverture
Fais-nous vivre à tout moment, Seigneur, dans l’amour et le respect de ton saint nom, toi qui ne cesses jamais de guider ceux que tu enracines solidement dans ton amour. Par Jésus.
1ère lecture : Gn 13, 2.5-18
Abram était extrêmement riche en troupeaux, en argent et en or. Loth, qui accompagnait Abram, avait également du petit et du gros bétail, et son propre campement. Le pays ne leur permettait pas d’habiter ensemble, car leurs biens étaient trop considérables pour qu’ils puissent habiter ensemble. Il y eut des disputes entre les bergers d’Abram et ceux de Loth. Les Cananéens et les Perizzites habitaient aussi le pays. Abram dit à Loth : « Surtout, qu’il n’y ait pas de querelle entre toi et moi, entre tes bergers et les miens, car nous sommes frères ! N’as-tu pas tout le pays devant toi ? Sépare-toi donc de moi. Si tu vas à gauche, j’irai à droite, et si tu vas à droite, j’irai à gauche. » Loth leva les yeux et il vit que toute la région du Jourdain était bien irriguée. Avant que le Seigneur détruisît Sodome et Gomorrhe, elle était comme le jardin du Seigneur, comme le pays d’Égypte, quand on arrive au delta du Nil. Loth choisit pour lui toute la région du Jourdain et il partit vers l’est. C’est ainsi qu’ils se séparèrent. Abram habita dans le pays de Canaan, et Loth habita dans les villes de la région du Jourdain ; il poussa ses campements jusqu’à Sodome. Les gens de Sodome se conduisaient mal, et ils péchaient gravement contre le Seigneur. Après le départ de Loth, le Seigneur dit à Abram : « Lève les yeux et regarde, de l’endroit où tu es, vers le nord et le midi, vers l’orient et l’occident. Tout le pays que tu vois, je te le donnerai, à toi et à ta descendance, pour toujours. Je rendrai nombreuse ta descendance, autant que la poussière de la terre : si l’on pouvait compter les grains de poussière, on pourrait compter tes descendants! Lève-toi ! Parcours le pays en long et en large : c’est à toi que je vais le donner. » Abram déplaça son campement et alla s’établir aux chênes de Mambré, près d’Hébron ; et là, il bâtit un autel au Seigneur.

R/ Seigneur, qui séjournera sous ta tente ?
Celui qui se conduit parfaitement, qui agit avec justice et dit la vérité selon son cœur. Il met un frein à sa langue.
Il ne fait pas de tort à son frère et n’outrage pas son prochain. À ses yeux, le réprouvé est méprisable mais il honore les fidèles du Seigneur.
Il ne reprend pas sa parole. Il prête son argent sans intérêt, n’accepte rien qui nuise à l’innocent. Qui fait ainsi demeure inébranlable.
Acclamation
Alléluia. Alléluia. Moi, je suis la lumière du monde, dit le Seigneur. Celui qui me suit aura la lumière de la vie. Alléluia. (Jn 8, 12)
Évangile : Mt 7, 6.12-14
En ce temps-là, Jésus disait à ses disciples : « Ne donnez pas aux chiens ce qui est sacré ; ne jetez pas vos perles aux pourceaux, de peur qu’ils ne les piétinent, puis se retournent pour vous déchirer. Tout ce que vous voudriez que les autres fassent pour vous, faites-le pour eux, vous aussi : voilà ce que disent la Loi et les Prophètes. Entrez par la porte étroite. Elle est grande, la porte, il est large, le chemin qui conduit à la perdition ; et ils sont nombreux, ceux qui s’y engagent. Mais elle est étroite, la porte, il est resserré, le chemin qui conduit à la vie; et ils sont peu nombreux, ceux qui le trouvent. »

Accepte, Seigneur, le sacrifice de louange et de pardon, afin que nos cœurs, purifiés par sa puissance,t’offrent un amour qui réponde à ton amour. Par Jésus.

Prière après la communion
Renouvelés par le corps et le sang de ton Fils, nous implorons ta bonté, Seigneur : fais qu’à jamais rachetés, nous possédions dans ton Royaume ce que nous célébrons en chaque Eucharistie. Par Jésus.
Méditation
Jésus vient aujourd’hui nous prêcher la douceur et nous montrer l’exemple, mais à ses yeux la naïveté n’est pas une vertu, surtout quand elle compromet son message. Seul Dieu a le pouvoir de bousculer à bon escient les réticences de l’homme. Quant à nous qui ne sommes que des messagers, notre témoignage réclame beaucoup de discernement. Car, il y a des délais que nous ne pouvons pas raccourcir, des crises que nous devons respecter. L’une de nos plus grosses misères traitées à longueur de journée est que nous ramenons tout à nos désirs. De la vienne la plupart de nos tristesses : nous attendons tout des autres et nous leur en voulons de ne pas tout nous donner ; nous voudrions être reconnus, être estimés, être valorisés dans nos goûts ou choix. Mais Jésus-Christ nous dit : non pas être servi, mais servir et donner sa vie ; non pas être porté, mais porter le fardeau du frère ; non pas être compris, mais comprendre l’autre. Donne-nous ton Esprit Seigneur et viens agir en chacun de nous
