He was born in Germany and joined the Dominican Order. He taught in a number of places including the University of Paris, where St Thomas Aquinas studied under him. He was one of the greatest philosophers of the Middle Ages. He made great efforts to secure peace between people and between cities. He died at Cologne in 1280.

Almighty and merciful God, graciously keep from us all adversity, so that, unhindered in mind and body alike, we may pursue in freedom of heart the things that are yours. First reading : Wisdom 18:14-16,19:6-9
When peaceful silence lay over all, and night had run the half of her swift course, down from the heavens, from the royal throne, leapt your all-powerful Word; into the heart of a doomed land the stern warrior leapt. Carrying your unambiguous command like a sharp sword, he stood, and filled the universe with death; he touched the sky, yet trod the earth. For, to keep your children from all harm, the whole creation, obedient to your commands, was once more, and newly, fashioned in its nature. Jesus told his disciples a parable about the need to pray continually and never lose heart. ‘There was a judge in a certain town’ he said ‘who had neither fear of God nor respect for man. In the same town there was a widow who kept on coming to him and saying, “I want justice from you against my enemy!” For a long time he refused, but at last he said to himself, “Maybe I have neither fear of God nor respect for man, but since she keeps pestering me I must give this widow her just rights, or she will persist in coming and worry me to death.”’ And the Lord said ‘You notice what the unjust judge has to say? Now will not God see justice done to his chosen who cry to him day and night even when he delays to help them? I promise you, he will see justice done to them, and done speedily. But when the Son of Man comes, will he find any faith on earth?’

Meditation
Through the parable of the widow and the unjust judge in today’s Gospel, Jesus teaches us a profound lesson on the significance of persistent prayer. He emphasises the importance of never giving up, even when there is no immediate answer. God, being loving and merciful, wants to answer our prayers. However, there are times when He delays to test our faith and teach us patience. Persistent prayer means praying without ceasing while applying the PUSH Formula (Pray Until Something Happens). God is always ready to answer our prayers. This approach is not about pressuring God but it is about immersing oneself in God. It urges us to avoid treating God like a quick fix. It is not praying for the sake of praying. We are confident in his words: “Call on me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you…” (Psalm 50:15); “Call to me, and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know” (Jeremiah 33:3). The parable illustrates that if a widow can receive justice from a wicked judge through her persistence, how much more can we expect blessings of mercy and grace from our loving Father? Let us not lose heart. Galatians 6:9 encourages us: “…for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” Persistent prayer entails keeping our requests before God as we live for Him daily, believing that He will answer.

D’origine souabe, Albert de Lauingen (vers 1206-1280) est un esprit à la curiosité universelle, d’abord intéressé par les sciences naturelles. Touché par la prédication de Jourdain de Saxe, maître général des Dominicains, il entre dans cet ordre et se passionne pour la science de Dieu. Mais il ne renonce pas aux autres disciplines.

Tu as voulu, Seigneur, que saint Albert mérite le nom de grand pour avoir su conciller sagesse humaine et foi diveine ; accorde-nous, à l’école d’un tel maitre, à travers nos progrès dans les sciences, de mieux te connaitre et de t’aimer d’avantage. Par Jésus.
1ère lecture : Sg 18, 14-16 ; 19, 6-9
Un silence paisible enveloppait toute chose, et la nuit de la Pâque était au milieu de son cours rapide; alors, du haut du ciel, venant de ton trône royal, Seigneur, ta Parole toute-puissante fondit en plein milieu de ce pays de détresse, comme un guerrier impitoyable, portant l’épée tranchante de ton décret inflexible. Elle s’arrêta, et sema partout la mort; elle touchait au ciel et marchait aussi sur la terre. La création entière, dans sa propre nature, était remodelée au service de tes décrets, pour que tes enfants soient gardés sains et saufs. En ce temps-là, Jésus disait à ses disciples une parabole sur la nécessité pour eux de toujours prier sans se décourager : « Il y avait dans une ville un juge qui ne craignait pas Dieu et ne respectait pas les hommes. Dans cette même ville, il y avait une veuve qui venait lui demander: “Rends-moi justice contre mon adversaire. Longtemps il refusa; puis il se dit : “Même si je ne crains pas Dieu et ne respecte personne, comme cette veuve commence à m’ennuyer, je vais lui rendre justice pour qu’elle ne vienne plus sans cesse m’assommer.”» Le Seigneur ajouta : « Écoutez bien ce que dit ce juge dépourvu de justice ! Méditation :
Jésus partage la parabole de la veuve persistante pour nous enseigner la persévérance dans la prière. Cette veuve incarne la persévérance inébranlable, ne se lassant pas de plaider sa cause devant le juge inique. Son exemple nous rappelle l’importance de persévérer dans nos prières. Méditons sur notre propre vie de prière. Sommes-nous persévérants, confiants que Dieu entend nos supplications ? La persévérance dans la prière renforce notre relation avec Dieu et fortifie notre foi. En suivant l’exemple de la veuve, continuons de prier avec foi, sachant que Dieu, qui est juste et bienveillant, répondra à nos besoins en temps voulu. Que notre persévérance dans la prière nous rapproche davantage de Sa grâce et de Sa volonté.

First reading : Wisdom 13:1-9
Naturally stupid are all men who have not known God and who, from the good things that are seen, have not been able to discover Him-who-is, or, by studying the works, have failed to recognise the Artificer. Fire however, or wind, or the swift air, the sphere of the stars, impetuous water, heaven’s lamps, are what they have held to be the gods who govern the world. If, charmed by their beauty, they have taken things for gods, let them know how much the Lord of these excels them, since the very Author of beauty has created them. And if they have been impressed by their power and energy, let them deduce from these how much mightier is he that has formed them, since through the grandeur and beauty of the creatures we may, by analogy, contemplate their Author. Small blame, however, attaches to these men, for perhaps they only go astray in their search for God and their eagerness to find him; living among his works, they strive to comprehend them and fall victim to appearances, seeing so much beauty. Meditation
A Christian must possess the dual qualities of “watchfulness” and “readiness.” In the Gospel, Jesus warns us that we must be ready for his return at any time. We must not be so caught up in our daily busy lives that we forget about God and His Kingdom. We must be watchful and ready for the day Jesus will return. It is essential to clarify that Jesus is not urging us to live in fear of death. Instead, he encourages us to be confident in our salvation and to prepare to meet Him when our time comes. Demonstrating detachment from material possessions is a way of proving that we are watchful and ready. That aligns with Jesus’ statement that “Anyone who tries to preserve his life will lose it, and anyone who loses it will keep it safe.” Detaching ourselves from our temporary possessions frees us from burdens that might hinder our prompt response to God’s call. Let our prayers be centred on being watchful and ready for the day of Jesus’ return. May Christ’s coming help us to detach ourselves from material possessions and refocus on our relationship with God.

Sidoine avait été pris par les corsaires en Irlande et vendu comme esclave aux moines de l’abbaye normande de Jumièges, qui allaient racheter les captifs dans les ports de le l’Angleterre. Ils lui rendirent ainsi sa liberté. Moine lui-même à Jumièges durant quelques années, il fonda à son tour l’abbaye de Saint-Saëns, qui, bien que détruite par les invasions normandes, a laissé son nom à la localité.

1ère lecture : Sagesse 13, 1-9
De nature, ils sont inconsistants, tous ces gens qui restent dans l’ignorance de Dieu : à partir de ce qu’ils voient de bon, ils n’ont pas été capables de connaître Celui qui est; en examinant ses œuvres, ils n’ont pas reconnu l’Artisan. Mais c’est le feu, le vent, la brise légère, la ronde des étoiles, la violence des flots, les luminaires du ciel gouvernant le cours du monde, qu’ils ont regardés comme des dieux. S’ils les ont pris pour des dieux, sous le charme de leur beauté, ils doivent savoir combien le Maître de ces choses leur est supérieur, car l’Auteur même de la beauté est leur créateur. Et si c’est leur puissance et leur efficacité qui les ont frappés, ils doivent comprendre, à partir de ces choses, combien est plus puissant Celui qui les a faites. Car à travers la grandeur et la beauté des créatures, on peut contempler, par analogie, leur Auteur. Et pourtant, ces hommes ne méritent qu’un blâme léger; car c’est peut-être en cherchant Dieu et voulant le trouver, qu’ils se sont égarés: plongés au milieu de ses œuvres, ils poursuivent leur recherche et se laissent prendre aux apparences: ce qui s’offre à leurs yeux est si beau ! Encore une fois, ils n’ont pas d’excuse. S’ils ont poussé la science à un degré tel qu’ils sont capables d’avoir une idée sur le cours éternel des choses, comment n’ont-ils pas découvert plus vite. Sommes-nous prêts à rencontrer le Seigneur lorsque ce jour viendra ? Vivons-nous une vie de foi, d’amour et de justice ? En restant fidèles à notre appel chrétien, nous vivons dans l’attente joyeuse de l’avènement de Christ. Que notre vie quotidienne reflète notre espérance en Son retour, et que nous soyons prêts à Le rencontrer avec foi et confiance.

She was born in Lombardy. Because of her frail health she was refused admission to two convents. She devoted herself to teaching, and founded the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. She founded 67 institutions across the United States, South America and Europe. She died of malaria at Chicago in 1917.

Meditation
When Jesus declares that the Kingdom of God is among you, he is not referring to a physical location. Instead, the Kingdom of God is a spiritual reality, representing the reign of God in our hearts and in the world around us. The Kingdom of God is present wherever love, justice, and peace prevail, and where individuals actively contribute to the betterment of the world. In the Gospel, Jesus tells us that the Kingdom of God is not a distant event but a present reality here and now. We are all called to be builders of the Kingdom of God, living lives characterised by love, justice, and peace. Our contributions can extend to actively working towards making the world a better place. Let us pray for God’s grace to be faithful builders of His Kingdom, committing ourselves to lives that embody love, justice, and peace. This may involve enduring hardships in solidarity with Christ, so that God’s Kingdom may continue to reign in our midst.

Il fut recueilli et protégé par saint Martin. Mais il quitta le monastère pour vivre dans le siècle avec ses tentations. A la mort de saint Martin, il changea sa manière de vivre. Il lui succéda sur le siège épiscopal de Tours, donnant toute sa vie à l’Eglise quarante années durant. Calomnié et accusé injustement il dut aller se défendre devant le pape. Heureusement, ses ouailles reconnurent son innocence et sa vertu. Il mourut en 444.

1ère lecture : Sagesse 7, 22 – 8, 1
Il y a dans la Sagesse un esprit intelligent et saint, unique et multiple, subtil et rapide ; perçant, net, clair et intact ; ami du bien, vif, irrésistible, bienfaisant, ami des hommes ; ferme, sûr et paisible, tout-puissant et observant tout, pénétrant tous les esprits, même les plus intelligents, les plus purs, les plus subtils. La Sagesse, en effet, se meut d’un mouvement qui surpasse tous les autres; elle traverse et pénètre toute chose à cause de sa pureté. Car elle est la respiration de la puissance de Dieu, l’émanation toute pure de la gloire du Souverain de l’univers; aussi rien de souillé ne peut l’atteindre. Elle est le rayonnement de la lumière éternelle, le miroir sans tache de l’activité de Dieu, l’image de sa bonté. Comme elle est unique, elle peut tout; et sans sortir d’elle-même, elle renouvelle l’univers. D’âge en âge, elle se transmet à des âmes saintes, pour en faire des prophètes et des amis de Dieu. Car Dieu n’aime que celui qui vit avec la Sagesse. Elle est plus belle que le soleil, elle surpasse toutes les constellations ; si on la compare à la lumière du jour, on la trouve bien supérieure, car le jour s’efface devant la nuit, mais contre la Sagesse le mal ne peut rien. Elle déploie sa vigueur d’un bout du monde à l’autre, elle gouverne l’univers avec bonté.

On ne dira pas : “Voilà, il est ici !” ou bien : “Il est là !” En effet, voici que le règne de Dieu est au milieu de vous. » Puis il dit aux disciples: « Des jours viendront où vous désirerez voir un seul des jours du Fils de l’homme, et vous ne le verrez pas. On vous dira: “Voilà, il est là-bas !” ou bien: “Voici, il est ici !” N’y allez pas, n’y courez pas. Jésus parle du Royaume de Dieu. Il nous enseigne que le Royaume de Dieu ne vient pas de manière spectaculaire, mais qu’il est déjà parmi nous, dans nos cœurs et nos actions justes. Méditons sur notre compréhension du Royaume de Dieu. Cherchons à vivre chaque jour avec une conscience du règne divin, en pratiquant l’amour, la justice et la compassion. En reconnaissant la présence du Royaume de Dieu dans notre vie quotidienne, nous participons à Son avènement et à la réalisation de Sa volonté sur terre. Que notre foi nous guide vers une vie de sainteté et de service, préparant ainsi le chemin pour la venue du Royaume en plénitude.

Saint Josaphat, Bishop, Martyr

He was born in Ukraine of Orthodox parents. Josaphat joined the first monastery of the order of St Basil to be united to the Catholic Church: he was the first person to do so. He was ordained priest and, eventually and reluctantly, appointed bishop of Polotsk in 1617. Josaphat was murdered by a mob in 1623 while on a pastoral visit to Vitebsk.

Because of the Lord’s covenant and the ancestral laws, the Saints of God persevered in loving brotherhood, for there was always one spirit in them, and one faith.

Stir up in your Church, we pray, O Lord, the Spirit that filled Saint Josaphat as he laid down his life for the sheep, so that through his intercession we, too, may be strengthened by the same Spirit and not be afraid to lay down our life for others. On the way to Jerusalem Jesus travelled along the border between Samaria and Galilee. As he entered one of the villages, ten lepers came to meet him. They stood some way off and called to him, ‘Jesus! Master! Take pity on us.’ When he saw them he said, ‘Go and show yourselves to the priests.’ Now as they were going away they were cleansed. Finding himself cured, one of them turned back praising God at the top of his voice and threw himself at the feet of Jesus and thanked him. The man was a Samaritan. This made Jesus say, ‘Were not all ten made clean? The other nine, where are they? It seems that no one has come back to give praise to God, except this foreigner.’ And he said to the man, ‘Stand up and go on your way. Your faith has saved you.’

May this heavenly table, O Lord, bestow on us a spirit of fortitude and peace, so that, following Saint Josaphat’s example, we may willingly spend our lives working for the honour and unity of the Church. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
Ten lepers have the privilege of receiving healing from the Master, Jesus, who responds to their desperate cry for help: “‘Jesus! Master! Take pity on us.” In a remarkable display of grace, He grants their plea for total healing. However, only one of them demonstrates a leap of faith, transitioning from grace to gratitude and ultimately to salvation. Because of this act of gratitude, he hears these wonderful words from the Master: “Your faith has saved you.” His response is immediate and from the heart. While the other nine may be concerned about fulfilling the legal requirements, the Samaritan, in a beautiful display of faith, focuses on expressing gratitude to God right where the grace of God found him. This act of gratitude exemplifies the kind of faith that not only saves but transforms us. In our own pursuits, many of us turn to God seeking healing or requesting various favours. The essential question arises: how many return to show an attitude of gratitude to God? Let us fervently pray for the grace to be always grateful for the many blessings we receive from God.

De famille orthodoxe, Jean Kuncewycz (vers 1580-1623) devient en 1604 moine basilien à Vilna, dans l’Eglise ruthène uniate, c’est-à-dire réunie à Rome, et prend le nom de Josaphat. Il fonde des monastères qui sont des foyers d’union entre grecs et latins. Son rayonnement est extraordinaire, et il est bientôt nommé archevêque catholique de Polotsk.

En ce temps-là, Jésus, marchant vers Jérusalem, traversait la région située entre la Samarie et la Galilée. Comme il entrait dans un village, dix lépreux vinrent à sa rencontre. Ils s’arrêtèrent à distance et lui crièrent : « Jésus, maître, prends pitié de nous. » À cette vue, Jésus leur dit : « Allez-vous montrer aux prêtres. » En cours de route, ils furent purifiés. L’un d’eux, voyant qu’il était guéri, revint sur ses pas, en glorifiant Dieu à pleine voix. Il se jeta face contre terre aux pieds de Jésus en lui rendant grâce. Or, c’était un Samaritain. Alors Jésus prit la parole en disant : « Tous les dix n’ont-ils pas été purifiés ? Les neuf autres, où sont-ils ? Jésus guérit dix lépreux, mais seulement un revient pour Le remercier. La gratitude est un acte puissant. Le lépreux qui est revenu pour remercier Jésus a reçu une double guérison, physique et spirituelle. Méditons sur notre propre gratitude envers Dieu. Souvent, nous pouvons être prompts à demander des bénédictions, mais négliger de rendre grâce. La gratitude renforce notre foi et notre relation avec Dieu. En pratiquant la gratitude, nous découvrons la profondeur de l’amour de Dieu et vivons dans une reconnaissance constante pour Ses bienfaits. Demandons la sagesse pour que notre cœur soit toujours rempli de gratitude envers le Seigneur, et que cela se reflète dans nos actions et notre attitude envers les autres.

Né en Pannonie (Hongrie), soldat à seize ans, Martin (vers 317-397) n’était encore que catéchumène quand, rempli d’une charité évangélique, il partagea son manteau avec un pauvre à Amiens. Baptisé à vingt-deux ans, il quitte l’armée et va se mettre à l’école de saint Hilaire à Poitiers.

Aujourd’hui Martin, le saint évêque de Tours, est entré dans le repos ; au ciel il a été accueilli par les anges.
Prière d’ouverture
Dieu qui as été glorifié par la vie et la mort de l’évêque saint Martin, Renouvelle en nos cœurs les merveilles de ta grâce, si bien que ni la mort, ni la vie ne puissent nous séparer de ton amour. Par Jésus.
1ère lecture : Sg2, 23-3,9
Dieu a créé l’homme pour l’incorruptibilité, il a fait de lui une image de sa propre identité. C’est par la jalousie du diable que la mort est entrée dans le monde ; ils en font l’expérience, ceux qui prennent parti pour lui. Mais les âmes des justes sont dans la main de Dieu ; aucun tourment n’a de prise sur eux. Aux yeux de l’insensé, ils ont paru mourir ; leur départ est compris comme un malheur, et leur éloignement, comme une fin : mais ils sont dans la paix. Au regard des hommes, ils ont subi un châtiment, mais l’espérance de l’immortalité les comblait. Après de faibles peines, de grands bienfaits les attendent, car Dieu les a mis à l’épreuve et trouvés dignes de lui. Comme l’or au creuset, il les a éprouvés ; comme une offrande parfaite, il les accueille. Au temps de sa visite, ils resplendiront : comme l’étincelle qui court sur la paille, ils avancent. Ils jugeront les nations, ils auront pouvoir sur les peuples,et le Seigneur régnera sur eux pour les siècles. Le Seigneur regarde les justes, il écoute, attentif à leur cris. Le Seigneur affronte les méchants pour effacer de la terre leur mémoire.
Le Seigneur entend ceux qui l’appellent : de toutes leurs angoisses, il les délivre. Il est proche du cœur brisé, il sauve l’esprit abattu.

En ce temps là, Jésus disait : « Lequel d’entre vous, quand son serviteur aura labouré ou gardé les bêtes, lui dira à son retour des champs : “Viens vite prendre place à table” ? Ne lui dira-t-il pas plutôt “Prépare-moi à dîner, mets-toi en tenue pour me servir, le temps que je mange et boive. Ensuite tu mangeras et boiras à ton tour” ? Va-t-il être reconnaissant envers ce serviteur d’avoir exécuté ses ordres ? De même vous aussi,quand vous aurez exécuté tout ce qui vous a été ordonné,dites : “Nous sommes de simples serviteurs : nous n’avons fait que notre devoir” ».

Méditation :
Jésus parle de l’humilité et du service. Cette méditation nous rappelle l’importance de l’humilité dans notre service envers Dieu. Les serviteurs dans cette parabole accomplissent leur devoir sans attendre de récompense. Méditons sur notre attitude envers le service et notre relation avec Dieu. Soyons humbles, reconnaissant que tout ce que nous avons et faisons est un don de Dieu. Servons avec gratitude et obéissance, sachant que c’est un honneur de Le servir. En pratiquant cette humilité dans notre service, nous renforçons notre relation avec Dieu et glorifions Son nom. La récompense réside dans le privilège de Lui plaire, plutôt que dans une reconnaissance terrestre.

Saint Martin of Tours, Bishop
(c.316 – 397)

He was born in the Roman province of Pannonia. He spent some time as a hermit on an island off the Ligurian coast, founded a monastery at Ligugé in western France. The famous story about St Martin is that while a soldier in Amiens he gave half of his military cloak to a beggar and later had a dream in which the beggar revealed himself as Christ. He died in 397.

I shall raise up for myself a faithful priest who will act in accord with my heart and my mind, says the Lord.

O God, who are glorified in the Bishop Saint Martin both by his life and death, make new, we pray, the wonders of your grace in our hearts, that neither death nor life may separate us from your love. God made man imperishable, he made him in the image of his own nature; it was the devil’s envy that brought death into the world, as those who are his partners will discover. But the souls of the virtuous are in the hands of God, no torment shall ever touch them. In the eyes of the unwise, they did appear to die, their going looked like a disaster, their leaving us, like annihilation; but they are in peace. If they experienced punishment as men see it, their hope was rich with immortality; slight was their affliction, great will their blessings be. Must he be grateful to the servant for doing what he was told? So with you: when you have done all you have been told to do, say, “We are merely servants: we have done no more than our duty.”’

Meditation
The words from our Gospel, “We are merely servants: we have done no more than our duty,” serve as a poignant reminder that when we engage in acts of service, we should not necessarily expect any show of gratitude or reward. We should serve out of love for God and others. True service is not about getting something in return. It is about selflessly giving of ourselves to others. Jesus stands as the most outstanding example of service and humility. His earthly mission was characterised by service and sacrificial giving. Without expecting thanks or reward, Jesus demonstrated profound love in his service to humanity. Jesus is a great model for any discourse about humility. Philippians 2: 5-11 beautifully captures his humility. We must follow Jesus’ example of serving others out of pure love without harbouring expectations. Though the servant may not express the wish to be thanked, Jesus assures us today that humble service is inherently rewarding. Let us seek the Lord’s guidance to cultivate humility, enabling us put others before ourselves, and serve them out of love.
