SAINT FranÇois de Sales
évêque et Docteur de l’Église,
Ordonné prêtre, il est prédicateur du Chabbais, et ramène cette région à la foi catholique. Son zèle apostolique lui valut d’être choisi comme évêque de Genève. Il fonda, avec Sainte Jeanne de Chantal, l’Ordre de la Visitation. Directeur spirituel d’une douceur exigeante ; il rappela aux laïcs chrétiens qu’ils ont tous la vocation à la perfection évangélique. Sa parole captivait ses auditoires, et ses écrits, première grande œuvre de théologie catholique en langue française, le firent proclamer docteur de l’Eglise par Pie XI. Il est le patron des écrivains et de la presse catholique.

1ère lecture : He 10, 1-10
Frères, la loi de Moïse ne présente que l’ébauche des biens à venir, et non pas l’expression même des réalités. Elle n’est donc jamais capable, par ses sacrifices qui sont toujours les mêmes, offerts indéfiniment chaque année, de mener à la perfection ceux qui viennent y prendre part. Si ce culte les avait purifiés une fois pour toutes, ils n’auraient plus aucun péché sur la conscience et, dans ce cas, n’aurait-on pas cessé d’offrir les sacrifices ? Mais ceux-ci, au contraire, comportent chaque année un rappel des péchés. Il est impossible, en effet, que du sang de taureaux et de boucs enlève les péchés. Aussi, en entrant dans le monde, le Christ dit : Tu n’as voulu ni sacrifice ni offrande, mais tu m’as formé un corps. Tu n’as pas agréé les holocaustes ni les sacrifices pour le péché ; alors, j’ai dit: Me voici, je suis venu, mon Dieu, pour faire ta volonté, ainsi qu’il est écrit de moi dans le Livre. Le Christ commence donc par dire : Tu n’as pas voulu ni agréé les sacrifices et les offrandes, les holocaustes et les sacrifices pour le péché, ceux que la Loi prescrit d’offrir. Puis il déclare: Me voici, je suis venu pour faire ta volonté. Ainsi, il supprime le premier état de choses pour établir le second. Et c’est grâce à cette volonté que nous sommes sanctifiés, par l’offrande que Jésus Christ a faite de son corps, une fois pour toutes.

D’un grand espoir, j’espérais le Seigneur : il s’est penché vers moi. Dans ma bouche il a mis un chant nouveau, une louange à notre Dieu.

En ce temps-là, arrivent sa mère et ses frères. Restant au-dehors, ils le font appeler. Une foule était assise autour de lui ; et on lui dit: « Voici que ta mère et tes frères sont là dehors : ils te cherchent. » Mais il leur répond : « Qui est ma mère ? Qui sont mes frères ? » Et parcourant du regard ceux qui étaient assis en cercle autour de lui, il dit : « Voici ma mère et mes frères. Celui qui fait la volonté de Dieu, celui-là est pour moi un frère, une sœur, une mère. »

Méditation
L’Évangile de ce jour nous parle de la condition de notre appartenance comme frères et sœurs du Christ. S’il est vrai que par le Baptême nous devenons enfants de Dieu, c’est bien en faisant la volonté du Père, nous dit Jésus, que nous demeurons ses frères et sœurs. Jésus nous révèle tout du Père, ce qu’il faut faire pour que nous restions unis sans préjudice ni discrimination, pour pouvoir être appelés mutuellement « frères et sœurs dans le Christ ». Comment reconnaître cette volonté du Père ? C’est en l’écoutant à travers les Saintes Ecritures et la prière. Nous saurons que nous faisons vraiment sa volonté quand nous obéirons à ce qu’il nous commande, même sans pleinement comprendre. « Enseignes moi Seigneur à faire ta volonté » (Ps 143 :10)

First reading: Hebrews 9: 15, 24-28
Christ brings a new covenant, as the mediator, only so that the people who were called to an eternal inheritance may actually receive what was promised: his death took place to cancel the sins that infringed the earlier covenant. It is not as though Christ had entered a man-made sanctuary which was only modelled on the real one; but it was heaven itself, so that he could appear in the actual presence of God on our behalf. And he does not have to offer himself again and again, like the high priest going into the sanctuary year after year with the blood that is not his own, or else he would have had to suffer over and over again since the world began. Instead of that, he has made his appearance once and for all, now at the end of the last age, to do away with sin by sacrificing himself. Since men only die once, and after that comes judgement, so Christ, too, offers himself only once to take the faults of many on himself, and when he appears a second time, it will not be to deal with sin but to reward with salvation those who are waiting for him.

Meditation
One characteristic of the evil one, which he tries to bequeath on us, is always to devalue the good deeds of others. The Scribes allowed themselves to be overcome by this hardness of heart and spiritual short-sightedness, preventing them from seeing the work of the Holy Spirit in Jesus who expels demons, forgives sins and heals the sick. Through the works of the Holy Spirit, Jesus is revealed to us as Saviour. To attribute the works of the Holy Spirit to the powers of darkness is to be an accomplice of evil and to refuse to be saved by Jesus. This blasphemy separates us from eternal grace and establishes us in eternal sin. Today offers us an opportunity to review the sins in our lives that we fear, implore for God’s mercy.

Originaire de la région de Lyon, il se marie et vit à la cour de l’empereur Charlemagne. En accord avec sa femme, après sept ans de vie commune il se consacre à Dieu au monastère d’Ambronay-01500, en Bresse. Il est nommé archevêque de Vienne sur le Rhône, en 810. En 837, il fonde l’abbaye de Romans où il mourut.

1 lecture : He 9, 15.24-28
Frères, le Christ est le médiateur d’une alliance nouvelle, d’un testament nouveau : puisque sa mort a permis le rachat des transgressions commises sous le premier Testament, ceux qui sont appelés peuvent recevoir l’héritage éternel jadis promis. Car le Christ n’est pas entré dans un sanctuaire fait de main d’homme, figure du sanctuaire véritable ; il est entré dans le ciel même, afin de se tenir maintenant pour nous devant la face de Dieu. Il n’a pas à s’offrir lui-même plusieurs fois, comme le grand prêtre qui, tous les ans, entrait dans le sanctuaire en offrant un sang qui n’était pas le sien ; car alors, le Christ aurait dû plusieurs fois souffrir la Passion depuis la fondation du monde. Mais en fait, c’est une fois pour toutes, à la fin des temps, qu’il s’est manifesté pour détruire le péché par son sacrifice. Et, comme le sort des hommes est de mourir une seule fois et puis d’être jugés, ainsi le Christ s’est- il offert une seule fois pour enlever les péchés de la multitude ; il apparaîtra une seconde fois, non plus à cause du péché, mais pour le salut de ceux qui l’attendent.

Méditation
Une des caractéristiques du malin à laquelle il veut nous entraîner c’est de toujours dévaloriser les bonnes actions des autres. Les Scribes se sont laissés envahir par cette dureté de cœur et cette myopie spirituelle leur empêchant alors de voir l’œuvre de l’Esprit Saint à travers Jésus qui expulse les démons, pardonne les péchés et guérit les malades. C’est par les œuvres de l’Esprit Saint que Jésus nous est révélé comme Sauveur. Or, attribuer les œuvres de l’Esprit Saint aux puissances des ténèbres c’est être complice du mal et refuser d’être sauvé par Jésus. Ce blasphème nous sépare de la Grâce éternelle et nous établit dans le péché éternel. C’est ici l’occasion pour nous de revoir dans nos vies les péchés que nous redoutons le pardon et implorons la miséricorde de Dieu.

Gospel: Matthew 4:12-23
Hearing that John had been arrested, Jesus went back to Galilee, and leaving Nazareth he went and settled in Capernaum, a lakeside town on the borders of Zebulun and Naphtali. In this way the prophecy of Isaiah was to be fulfilled: Land of Zebulun! Land of Naphtali! Way of the sea on the far side of Jordan, Galilee of the nations! The people that lived in darkness has seen a great light; on those who dwell in the land and shadow of death a light has dawned. From that moment Jesus began his preaching with the message, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is close at hand.” As he was walking by the Sea of Galilee he saw two brothers, Simon, who was called Peter, and his brother Andrew; they were making a cast in the lake with their net, for they were fishermen. And he said to them, “Follow me and I will make you fishers of men.” And they left their nets at once and followed him. Going on from there he saw another pair of brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John; they were in their boat with their father Zebedee, mending their nets, and he called them. At once, leaving the boat and their father, they followed him. He went round the whole of Galilee teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the Good News of the kingdom and curing all kinds of diseases and sickness among the people.

Meditation
The arrest of John the Baptist is a transition that coincides with the choice of the first disciples of Jesus. It is also a continuity in the proclamation of the message of conversion when Jesus, in turn, proclaims: “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is close at hand.” This is the background on which Jesus calls his first disciples, two brothers and fishermen, Simon and Andrew, by the Sea of Galilee. He chooses them to become “fishers of men”, meaning those who are responsible for gathering people from all over the world into Christ. Paul confirms this unifying mission by exhorting us to greater unity, to perfect harmony of thought and feeling. Thus, through the preaching of our Lord and his Apostles, we who were then in the darkness of division can bear witness to the presence of the Kingdom of heaven.

Le peuple qui marchait dans les ténèbres a vu se lever une grande lumière; sur ceux qui habitaient le pays de l’ombre, une lumière a resplendi. Tu as prodigué l’allégresse, tu as fait grandir la joie: ils se réjouissent devant toi comme on se réjouit en faisant la moisson, comme on exulte en partageant les dépouilles des vaincus. Car le joug qui pesait sur eux, le bâton qui meurtrissait leurs épaules, le fouet du chef de corvée, tu les as brisés comme au jour de la victoire sur Madiane.

2ème lecture : 1Co 1, 10-13.17
Frères, je vous exhorte au nom de
notre Seigneur Jésus Christ à être tous vraiment d’accord; qu’il n’y ait pas de division entre vous, soyez en parfaite harmonie de pensées et de sentiments. J’ai entendu parler de vous, mes frères, par les gens de chez Cloé : on dit qu’il y a des disputes entre vous. Je m’explique. Chacun de vous prend parti en disant: « Moi, j’appartiens à Paul », ou bien: « J’appartiens à Apollos», ou bien : « J’appartiens à Pierre », ou bien : « J’appartiens au Christ ». Le Christ est-il donc divisé ? Est-ce donc Paul qui a été crucifié pour vous ? Est-ce au nom de Paul que vous avez été baptisés ? D’ailleurs, le Christ ne m’a pas envoyé pour baptiser, mais pour annoncer l’Évangile, et sans avoir recours à la sagesse du langage humain, ce qui viderait de son sens la croix du Christ.

Quand Jésus apprit l’arrestation de Jean Baptiste, il se retira en Galilée. Il quitta Nazareth et vint habiter à Capharnaüm, ville située au bord du lac, dans les territoires de Zabulon et de Nephtali. Ainsi s’accomplit ce que le Seigneur avait dit par le prophète Isaïe : Pays de Zabulon et pays de Nephtali, route de la mer et pays au-delà du Jourdain, Galilée, toi le carrefour des païens : le peuple qui habitait dans les ténèbres a vu se lever une grande lumière. Sur ceux qui habitaient dans le pays de l’ombre et de la mort, une lumière s’est levée. A partir de ce moment, Jésus se mit à proclamer: « Convertissez-vous, car le Royaume des cieux est tout proche.» Comme il marchait au bord du lac de Galilée, il vit deux frères, Simon, appelé Pierre, et son frère André, qui jetaient leurs filets dans le lac : c’étaient des pêcheurs. Jésus leur dit: «Venez derrière moi, et je vous ferai pêcheurs d’hommes.» Aussitôt, laissant leurs filets, ils le suivirent. Plus loin, il vit deux autres frères, Jacques, fils de Zébédée, et son frère Jean, qui étaient dans leur barque avec leur père, en train de préparer leurs filets. Il les appela. Aussitôt, laissant leur barque et leur père, ils le suivirent. Jésus, parcourant toute la Galilée, enseignait dans leurs synagogues, proclamait la Bonne Nouvelle du Royaume, guérissait toute maladie et toute infirmité dans le peuple.

Méditation
L’arrestation de Jean le Baptiste est une transition qui coïncide avec le choix des premiers disciples de Jésus. Aussi, elle est une continuité dans l’annonce du message de conversion lorsque Jésus à son tour proclame: « convertissez- vous, le Royaume des cieux est tout proche. » C’est dans ce contexte que Jésus appelle ses premiers disciples, deux frères pêcheurs dans la mer de Galilée, Simon et André. Il les choisit pour devenir « des pêcheurs d’homme », désignant ceux qui ont la charge de rassembler dans le Christ les hommes de par toute la terre. Paul nous confirme cette mission unificatrice en nous exhortant à plus d’unité, de parfaite harmonie de pensée et de sentiments. Ainsi, par la prédication de notre Seigneur et de ses Apôtres, nous qui étions alors dans les ténèbres de la division, pouvons témoigner de la présence du Royaume des cieux.

SAINT AGNES
As with so many of the early Roman martyrs, very little is now known about Agnes’ life. Agnes was filled with the love of God from an early age, vowed herself to celibacy, and when the opportunity of martyrdom arose, she did not hide away but stepped forward and took it.

Behold, now she follows the Lamb who was crucified for us, powerful in virginity, modesty her offering, a sacrifice on the altar of chastity.

Almighty ever-living God, who choose what is weak in the world to confound the strong, mercifully grant, that we, who celebrate the heavenly birthday of your Martyr Saint Agnes, may follow her constancy in the faith. First reading: Hebrews 9: 2-3, 11-14
There was a tent which comprised two compartments: the first, in which the lamp stand, the table and the presentation loaves were kept, was called the Holy Place; then beyond the second veil, an innermost part which was called the Holy of Holies. But now Christ has come, as the high priest of all the blessings which were to come. He has passed through the greater, the more perfect tent, which is better than the one made by men’s hands because it is not of this created order; and he has entered the sanctuary once and for all, taking with him not the blood of goats and bull calves, but his own blood, having won an eternal redemption for us. Meditation
Have you ever lacked the support of your friends and family? Such is the case of the misunderstood that Jesus faces in today’s Gospel. After giving new teachings, healing the sick, casting out demons, and preaching by living an exemplary life, Christ is disowned by his very own. Following his example, we are called to persevere in our Christian life in a corrupt and unjust society. In adversity, we must redouble our efforts in promoting Christian values and, above all, preach by the example of our lives. Let us give thanks to the Lord for all those workers of the Gospel who, despite situations of abandonment, have not given up on enlightening the world.

Il y eut à Rome une fillette âgée entre douze et quinze ans qui mourut volontairement pour sa foi en Jésus-Christ, lors de la persécution de Dioclétien. Comme on ne savait pas exactement son nom, celui d’Agnès qui signifie « Agneau » lui fut attribué.
Antienne d’ouverture : Ps 65, 4
Sainte Agnès a combattu jusqu’à la mort pour être fidèle à son Dieu; elle n’a pas craint les menaces des impies : elle était fondée sur le roc.
Prière d’ouverture
Dieu éternel et tout-puissant, tu choisis les créatures les plus faibles pour confondre les puissances du monde ; tandis que nous célébrons l’anniversaire du martyre de sainte Agnès, accorde-nous d’imiter sa fermeté dans la foi. Par Jésus.
1ère lecture : Hébreux 9, 2-3.11-14
Frères, dans le sanctuaire de l’ancienne Alliance, une tente était disposée, la première, où se trouvaient le chandelier à sept branches et la table avec les pains de l’offrande ; c’est ce qu’on nomme le Saint. Derrière le second rideau, il y avait la tente appelée le Saint des Saints. Le Christ est venu, grand prêtre des biens à venir. Par la tente plus grande et plus parfaite, celle qui n’est pas œuvre de mains humaines et n’appartient pas à cette création, il est entré une fois pour toutes dans le sanctuaire, en répandant, non pas le sang de boucs et de jeunes taureaux, mais son propre sang. De cette manière, il a obtenu une libération définitive. S’il est vrai qu’une simple aspersion avec le sang de boucs et de taureaux, et de la cendre de génisse, sanctifie ceux qui sont souillés, leur rendant la pureté de la chair, le sang du Christ fait bien davantage, car le Christ, poussé par l’Esprit éternel, s’est offert lui-même à Dieu comme une victime sans défaut ; son sang purifiera donc notre conscience des actes qui mènent à la mort, pour que nous puissions rendre un culte au Dieu vivant.

Méditation
Avez-vous une fois déjà manqué du soutien de vos amis et familiers? Tel est le cas de Jésus incompris dans l’Évangile de ce jour. Après avoir donné des enseignements nouveaux, guéris les malades, expulser les démons et surtout en prêchant par une vie exemplaire, le Christ est désavoué par les siens. A son exemple, nous sommes appelés à la persévérance dans notre vie chrétienne dans une société corrompue et injuste. Face à ces adversités nous devons redoubler d’efforts dans la promotion des valeurs chrétiennes et surtout prêcher par l’exemple de nos vies. Rendons grâce au Seigneur pour tous ces ouvriers de l’Évangile qui parfois, malgré les situations d’abandon n’ont pas renoncé à éclairer le monde.

Saint sebatine
Father Cyprian Michael Iwene Tansi was born in Nigeria in 1903. He joined the Cistercian Abbey of Mount St Bernard, near Nottingham. He return to establish a Trappist Monastery in the Diocese of Onitsha in Nigeria. Fr Tansi lived the monastic life with great faith and humility. Absorbed in prayer, he was a living example of patience and charity. Early in 1964 he was diagnosed with aortic aneurysm and died two weeks later on 20 January 1964.

We have seen that Christ has been given a ministry of a far higher order, and to the same degree it is a better covenant of which he is the mediator, founded on better promises. If that first covenant had been without a fault, there would have been no need for a second one to replace it. And in fact, God does find fault with them; he says: See, the days are coming – it is the Lord who speaks – when I will establish a new covenant with the House of Israel and the House of Judah, but not a covenant like the one I made with their ancestors on the day I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt. They abandoned that covenant of mine, and so I on my side deserted them. It is the Lord who speaks. No, this is the covenant I will make with the House of Israel when those days arrive – it is the Lord who speaks. I will put my laws into their minds and write them on their hearts. Meditation
The choice of the apostles reflects our Lord’s desire to associate us with his mission. It is a choice of ordinary people for extraordinary work. Christ calls us by name to stay with him and witness his Gospel like the apostles. He wants to use us, our time, and our talents to extend the Kingdom of Heaven. Let us be the feet of Christ on earth and go to proclaim the Gospel; let us be his hands and live charity; let us be those envoys who expel the demons of hatred, division, jealousy, slander. Let us be witnesses to the truth.

Né Iwene Tansi en 1903 à Onitsha (Nigeria) et décédé le 20 janvier 1964 à Leicester (Angleterre), était un moine et prêtre trappiste nigérian. Il est le premier bienheureux du Nigeria et le premier prêtre béatifié d’Afrique (en dehors des saints et Martyrs africains des débuts du christianisme.

1ère lecture : Hébreux 8, 6-13
Frères, le service qui revient à notre grand prêtre se distingue d’autant plus que lui est médiateur d’une alliance meilleure, reposant sur de meilleures promesses. En effet, si la première Alliance avait été irréprochable, il n’y aurait pas eu lieu d’en chercher une deuxième. Or, c’est bien un reproche que Dieu fait à son peuple quand il dit : Voici venir des jours, dit le Seigneur, où je conclurai avec la maison d’Israël et avec la maison de Juda une alliance nouvelle. Ce ne sera pas comme l’Alliance que j’ai faite avec leurs pères, le jour où je les ai pris par la main pour les faire sortir du pays d’Égypte : eux ne sont pas restés dans mon Alliance ; alors moi, je les ai délaissés, dit le Seigneur. Mais voici quelle sera l’Alliance que j’établirai avec la maison d’Israël quand ces jours-là seront passés, dit le Seigneur. Quand je leur donnerai mes lois, je les inscrirai dans leur pensée et sur leurs cœurs. Je serai leur Dieu, et ils seront mon peuple. Ils n’auront plus à instruire chacun son concitoyen ni chacun son frère en disant : « Apprends à connaître le Seigneur ! » Car tous me connaîtront, des plus petits jusqu’aux plus grands. Méditation
Le choix des apôtres traduit la volonté de notre Seigneur à nous associer à sa mission. Il s’agit d’un choix porté sur des personnes ordinaires pour un travail extraordinaire. Tout comme ces apôtres, le Christ nous appelle par nos noms pour d’abord demeurer avec lui et ensuite témoigner de son Évangile. Il veut se servir de nous, de notre temps, de nos talents pour étendre le Royaume des cieux. Soyons les pieds du Christ sur terre et allons proclamer l’Évangile ; soyons ses mains et vivons la charité ; soyons ces envoyés qui expulsent les démons de la haine, de la division, de la jalousie, de la calomnie. Soyons témoins de la vérité.

St. Fillan, son of Feriach was also known as Foelan. Extravagant miracles attributed to him, such as the one in which his prayers caused a wolf that had killed the ox he was using to drag materials to the church he was building. Fillan died on January 19.

The power of Jesus to save is utterly certain, since he is living for ever to intercede for all who come to God through him. To suit us, the ideal high priest would have to be holy, innocent and uncontaminated, beyond the influence of sinners, and raised up above the heavens; one who would not need to offer sacrifices every day, as the other high priests do for their own sins and then for those of the people, because he has done this once and for all by offering himself. The Law appoints high priests who are men subject to weakness; but the promise on oath, which came after the Law, appointed the Son who is made perfect for ever. The great point of all that we have said is that we have a high priest of exactly this kind. He has his place at the right of the throne of divine Majesty in the heavens, and he is the minister of the sanctuary and of the true Tent of Meeting which the Lord, and not any man, set up. It is the duty of every high priest to offer gifts and sacrifices, and so this one too must have something to offer. In fact, if he were on earth, he would not be a priest at all, since there are others who make the offerings laid down by the Law and these only maintain the service of a model or a reflection of the heavenly realities. For Moses, when he had the Tent to build, was warned by God who said: See that you make everything according to the pattern shown you on the mountain. Meditation
Jesus has always been kind to those who have heard of him and sought him. That is why we can see the multitude that came to meet him in today’s Gospel. We also want to touch Christ! We are like this crowd made up of both holy and unclean spirits who recognise his authority as the Son of God, and who want to be healed. We need to touch Christ present in the Eucharist. In this deep and permanent relationship with Christ in the Eucharist, we are healed of our sufferings, and our spirits of fear, sadness, selfishness, and hypocrisy are cast out.
