St. Martin de Tours,
Évêque
Né en Pannonie (Hongrie), soldat à seize ans, Martin (vers 317-397) n’était encore que catéchumène quand, rempli d’une charité évangélique, il partagea son manteau avec un pauvre à Amiens. Baptisé à vingt-deux ans, il quitte l’armée et va se mettre à l’école de saint Hilaire à Poitiers.

Aujourd’hui Martin, le saint évêque de Tours, est entré dans le repos ; au ciel il a été accueilli par les anges.
Prière d’ouverture
Dieu qui as été glorifié par la vie et la mort de l’évêque saint Martin, Renouvelle en nos cœurs les merveilles de ta grâce, si bien que ni la mort, ni la vie ne puissent nous séparer de ton amour. Par Jésus Christ.
1ère lecture : 2 Jn 1a. 4-9
Moi, l’Ancien, à la Dame élue de Dieu, et à ses enfants, que j’aime en vérité. ‘ai eu beaucoup de joie à trouver plusieurs de tes enfants qui marchent dans la vérité selon le commandement que nous avons reçu du Père. Et maintenant, Dame élue, je t’adresse une demande : aimons-nous les uns les autres. – Ce que je t’écris là n’est pas un commandement nouveau, nous l’avions depuis le commencement. Or l’amour, c’est que nous marchions selon ses commandements. Tel est le commandement selon lequel vous devez marcher, comme, depuis le commencement, vous l’avez appris. Beaucoup d’imposteurs se sont répandus dans le monde, ils refusent de proclamer que Jésus Christ est venu dans la chair ; celui qui agit ainsi est l’imposteur et l’anti-Christ. Prenez garde à vous-mêmes, pour ne pas perdre le fruit de notre travail, mais pour recevoir intégralement votre salaire. Quiconque va trop loin et ne se tient pas à l’enseignement du Christ, celui-là se sépare de Dieu. Mais celui qui se tient à cet enseignement, celui-là reste attaché au Père et au Fils.

On mangeait, on buvait, on prenait femme, on prenait mari, jusqu’au jour où Noé entra dans l’arche et où survint le déluge qui les fit tous périr. Il en était de même dans les jours de Loth : on mangeait, on buvait, on achetait, on vendait, on plantait, on bâtissait ; mais le jour où Loth sortit de Sodome, du ciel tomba une pluie de feu et de soufre qui les fit tous périr ; cela se passera de la même manière le jour où le Fils de l’homme se révélera. En ce jour où nous fêtons saint Martin, sanctifie, Seigneur, cette offrande : Qu’elle nous aide toujours à marcher vers toi à travers les épreuves et les joies de cette vie. Par Jésus.

Méditation
La question du Jour du Fils de l’homme préoccupe tout disciple du Christ. De ce fait, nous sommes invités à vivre fidèlement selon les exigences de la conversion, même si la vie du monde extérieur donne l’impression qu’aucune venue n’aura lieu, car lorsqu’apparaitra « le Jour où le Fils de l’homme se révélera », il sera trop tard pour se convertir. Alors, peu importe le jour, le Christ nous enseigne que le jour de son retour est sûr et certain.

St. Léon le Grand, pape et docteur de l’Eglise
Pape en 440, Léon (vers 395-461) est un prédicateur dont les sermons sont d’une grande richesse doctrinale, et un pasteur qui sut, face aux hérésies, formuler le mystère de la personne du Christ, Dieu et homme, en des termes adoptés par le concile de Chalcédoine. Par ses interventions, l’évêque de Rome sauva à deux reprises sa ville de la ruine dont la menaçaient les Huns d’Attila et les Vandales de Genséric.

Le Seigneur a conclu avec saint Léon une alliance de paix. Il en a fait un chef qui possède à jamais la dignité du sacerdoce.
Prière d’ouverture
Dieu qui ne laisses pas les puissances du mal prévaloir contre ton Église fondée sur le roc inébranlable des Apôtres, fais qu’à la prière du pape saint Léon, elle reste ferme dans ta vérité, et, sous ta garde, soit pour toujours en paix. Par Jésus Christ.
1ère lecture : Phm 7-20
Bien-aimé, ta charité m’a déjà apporté beaucoup de joie et de réconfort, car grâce à toi, frère, les cœurs des fidèles ont trouvé du repos. Certes, j’ai dans le Christ toute liberté de parole pour te prescrire ce qu’il faut faire, mais je préfère t’adresser une demande au nom de la charité : moi, Paul, tel que je suis, un vieil homme et, qui plus est, prisonnier maintenant à cause du Christ Jésus, j’ai quelque chose à te demander pour Onésime, mon enfant à qui, en prison, j’ai donné la vie dans le Christ. Cet Onésime (dont le nom signifie « avantageux ») a été, pour toi, inutile à un certain moment, mais il est maintenant bien utile pour toi comme pour moi. Je te le renvoie, lui qui est comme mon cœur. Je l’aurais volontiers gardé auprès de moi, pour qu’il me rende des services en ton nom, à moi qui suis en prison à cause de l’Évangile. Mais je n’ai rien voulu faire sans ton accord, pour que tu accomplisses ce qui est bien, non par contrainte mais volontiers. S’il a été éloigné de toi pendant quelque temps, c’est peut-être pour que tu le retrouves définitivement, non plus comme un esclave, mais, mieux qu’un esclave, comme un frère bien-aimé : il l’est vraiment pour moi, combien plus le sera-t-il pour toi, aussi bien humainement que dans le Seigneur. Si donc tu estimes que je suis en communion avec toi, accueille-le comme si c’était moi. S’il t’a fait du tort ou s’il te doit quelque chose, mets cela sur mon compte. Moi, Paul, j’écris ces mots de ma propre main : c’est moi qui te rembourserai. Je n’ajouterai pas que toi aussi, tu as une dette envers moi, et cette dette, c’est toi-même. Oui, frère, donne-moi cette satisfaction dans le Seigneur, fais que mon cœur trouve du repos dans le Christ.

En ce temps-là, comme les pharisiens demandaient à Jésus quand viendrait le règne de Dieu, il prit la parole et dit : « La venue du règne de Dieu n’est pas observable. On ne dira pas : “Voilà, il est ici !” ou bien : “Il est là !” En effet, voici que le règne de Dieu est au milieu de vous. » Puis il dit aux disciples : « Des jours viendront où vous désirerez voir un seul des jours du Fils de l’homme, et vous ne le verrez pas. On vous dira : “Voilà, il est là-bas !” ou bien : “Voici, il est ici !” N’y allez pas, n’y courez pas. En effet, comme l’éclair qui jaillit illumine l’horizon d’un bout à l’autre, ainsi le Fils de l’homme, quand son jour sera là. Mais auparavant, il faut qu’il souffre beaucoup et qu’il soit rejeté par cette génération. »

Méditation
« La venue du règne de Dieu n’est pas observable… ». La proximité du règne de Dieu est une certitude pour tout homme qui croit car elle est liée à la personne de Jésus. Elle implique une décision, un retournement où l’homme réalise qu’il est concerné par Dieu qui veut le bonheur de tous. C’est pour cela que Jésus invite ses amis à quitter non pas le monde d’ici-bas mais leurs habitudes mondaines pour que germent les prémices de cet irrésistible royaume

Pope St. Leo the Great
(- 461)
He was born in Etruria and became Pope in 440. He was a true shepherd and father of souls. He constantly strove to keep the faith whole and strenuously defended the unity of the Church. He left many doctrinal and spiritual writings behind and a number of them are included in the Office of Readings to this day. He died in 461.

The Lord established for him a covenant of peace, and made him the prince, that he might have the dignity of the priesthood for ever.

O God, who never allow the gates of hell to prevail against your Church, firmly founded on the apostolic rock, grant her, we pray, that through the intercession of Pope Saint Leo, she may stand firm in your truth and know the protection of lasting peace. Meditation
“The Kingdom of God is among you” (Lk 17:21). The Kingdom of God is not some geographical place with set boundaries. This is the truth which Jesus reveals to us in the gospel text. The kingdom of God is a state of being or existence. That is why Jesus says that the Kingdom of God is among us or within us. Jesus is the sacrament of God’s Kingdom, and wherever the lordship of Christ is manifested, there is the Kingdom of God. Wherever the gospel values of truth, justice, love and peace reign, there also is the Kingdom of God. We are already having a foretaste of the kingdom if our lives are shaped by these gospel values.

Basilique du Latran
La cathédrale de l’évêque de Rome est édifiée sur le domaine qui appartenait à la famille des Laterani et où s’élevait un palais, voisin d’une caserne. L’empereur Constantin rasa celle-ci et la remplaça par la première basilique liturgique monumentale, qu’il offrit avec le palais, au pape Sylvestre vers 320.

J’ai vu la cité sainte, la Jérusalem nouvelle, qui descendait du ciel, d’auprès de Dieu, toute prête, comme une fiancée parée pour son époux.

Comme la Pâque juive était proche, Jésus monta à Jérusalem. Dans le Temple, il trouva installés les marchands de bœufs, de brebis et de colombes, et les changeurs. Il fit un fouet avec des cordes, et les chassa tous du Temple, ainsi que les brebis et les bœufs ; il jeta par terre la monnaie des changeurs, renversa leurs comptoirs, et dit aux marchands de colombes : « Enlevez cela d’ici. Cessez de faire de la maison de mon Père une maison de commerce. » Ses disciples se rappelèrent qu’il est écrit : L’amour de ta maison fera mon tourment. Des Juifs l’interpellèrent : « Quel signe peux-tu nous donner pour agir ainsi ? » Jésus leur répondit : « Détruisez ce sanctuaire, et en trois jours je le relèverai. » Les Juifs lui répliquèrent : « Il a fallu quarante-six ans pour bâtir ce sanctuaire, et toi, en trois jours tu le relèverais ! » Mais lui parlait du sanctuaire de son corps. Aussi, quand il se réveilla d’entre les morts, ses disciples se rappelèrent qu’il avait dit cela ; ils crurent à l’Écriture et à la parole que Jésus avait dite.

Méditation
La maison est perçue comme un lieu de partage, de convivialité, d’amour, d’émotions et de ressourcement. La maison est le lieu où l’on se sent bien entre amis, en famille. En célébrant la dédicace de la Basilique du Latran, le Christ nous invite à admirer l’Église, le lieu de sa présence, l’Église dont nos églises sont l’image. Pourrions-nous dire avec le psalmiste : « Quelle joie quand on m’a dit : Nous irons à la maison du Seigneur ! Maintenant notre marche prend fin devant tes portes, Jérusalem ! » (Ps 121 (122), 1).

Dedication of
the Lateran Basilica
(c.324)
The Lateran Basilica was built by the Emperor Constantine on the Lateran Hill in Rome in about 324. In honour of the basilica, “the mother and head of all the churches of the City and the World,” the feast has been extended to the whole Roman Rite as a sign of unity and love towards the See of Peter.

Making a whip out of some cord, he drove them all out of the Temple, cattle and sheep as well, scattered the money-changers’ coins, knocked their tables over and said to the pigeon-sellers, ‘Take all this out of here and stop turning my Father’s house into a market.’ Then his disciples remembered the words of Scripture: Zeal for your house will devour me. The Jews intervened and said, ‘What sign can you show us to justify what you have done?’ Jesus answered, ‘Destroy this sanctuary, and in three days I will raise it up.’ The Jews replied, ‘It has taken forty-six years to build this sanctuary: are you going to raise it up in three days?’ But he was speaking of the sanctuary that was his body, and when Jesus rose from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they believed the Scripture and the words he had said.

O God, who chose to foreshadow for us the heavenly Jerusalem through the sign of your Church on earth, grant, we pray, that, by our partaking of this Sacrament, we may be made the temple of your grace and may enter the dwelling place of your glory. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
Today the Church marks the feast of the dedication of the Lateran Basilica. This Basilica, which was erected by Emperor Constantine, is taken to be the mother of all the Churches as well as a symbol of unity of the Church. We have beautiful images of the temple presented in the three readings – the image of the water which flows out of the temple and gives life to all living beings (1st Reading); the faithful as the temple of the Holy Spirit (2nd Reading) and the cleansing of the temple by Jesus (Gospel). Through Baptism, you become a temple and dwelling place of the Holy Spirit. If the Spirit of God is in you, your life will be like a flowing river that nourishes the lives of all around you. Because God dwells in you, you are a source of blessing to people.

Son monastère battait de l’aile avec seulement six moines quand ceux-ci le choisirent comme abbé. En quelque temps, le monastère de Nogent ans la Marne devint l’un des plus florissants. Après l’insistance de l’évêque de Reims, il accepte de devenir évêque d’Amiens. Ce qui lui en coûta en quelque sorte. Car la plupart des membres du clergé était à la solde des grands seigneurs.

1ère lecture : Tt 2, 1-8.11-14
Bien-aimé, dis ce qui est conforme à l’enseignement de la saine doctrine. Que les hommes âgés soient sobres, dignes de respect, pondérés, et solides dans la foi, la charité et la persévérance. De même, que les femmes âgées mènent une vie sainte, ne soient pas médisantes ni esclaves de la boisson, et qu’elles soient de bon conseil, pour apprendre aux jeunes femmes à aimer leur mari et leurs enfants, à être raisonnables et pures, bonnes maîtresses de maison, aimables, soumises à leur mari, afin que la parole de Dieu ne soit pas exposée au blasphème. Les jeunes aussi, exhorte-les à être raisonnables en toutes choses. Toi-même, sois un modèle par ta façon de bien agir, par un enseignement sans défaut et digne de respect, par la solidité inattaquable de ta parole, pour la plus grande confusion de l’adversaire, qui ne trouvera aucune critique à faire sur nous. Car la grâce de Dieu s’est manifestée pour le salut de tous les hommes. Elle nous apprend à renoncer à l’impiété et aux convoitises de ce monde, et à vivre dans le temps présent de manière raisonnable, avec justice et piété, attendant que se réalise la bienheureuse espérance : la manifestation de la gloire de notre grand Dieu et Sauveur, Jésus Christ. Car il s’est donné pour nous afin de nous racheter de toutes nos fautes, et de nous purifier pour faire de nous son peuple, un peuple ardent à faire le bien.

Ne lui dira-t-il pas plutôt: “Prépare-moi à dîner, mets-toi en tenue pour me servir, le temps que je mange et boive. Ensuite tu mangeras et boiras à ton tour” ? Va-t-il être reconnaissant envers ce serviteur d’avoir exécuté ses ordres ? De même vous aussi, quand vous aurez exécuté tout ce qui vous a été ordonné, dites : “Nous sommes de simples serviteurs : nous n’avons fait que notre devoir” ».

Méditation
« Nous sommes de simple serviteurs : nous n’avons fait que notre devoir ». Jésus, lui le Serviteur des serviteurs de Dieu, invite ses disciples à vivre dans l’esprit de service et à cultiver le sens de la gratuité. Le mot « service » nous fait entrer dans l’intimité de Dieu. « Je ne vous appelle plus serviteurs… mais mes amis » (Jn 15, 15). Bien-aimé(es) travaillons donc dans le champ du Seigneur, son Église, comme des serviteurs inutiles.

He was born in Oxford and ordained priest in 1596. He worked secretly as a priest in 1603 in Oxfordshire. He was arrested in 1610: the possession of the holy oils and a breviary was considered sufficient evidence of priesthood and he was condemned to death. He was hanged, drawn and quartered at Oxford on 8 November 1610 and beatified by Pope Pius XI in 1929.

First reading : Titus 2:1-8,11-14
It is for you to preach the behaviour which goes with healthy doctrine. The older men should be reserved, dignified, moderate, sound in faith and love and constancy. Similarly, the older women should behave as though they were religious, with no scandal-mongering and no habitual wine-drinking – they are to be the teachers of the right behaviour and show the younger women how they should love their husbands and love their children, how they are to be sensible and chaste, and how to work in their homes, and be gentle, and do as their husbands tell them, so that the message of God is never disgraced. In the same way, you have got to persuade the younger men to be moderate and in everything you do make yourself an example to them of working for good: when you are teaching, be an example to them in your sincerity and earnestness and in keeping all that you say so wholesome that nobody can make objections to it; and then any opponent will be at a loss, with no accusation to make against us. Meditation
The role of the servant is to do the will of his master. The master is not indebted to him for doing what he is supposed to do as a servant. Nonetheless, a faithful servant usually gains the approval and praise of his master. We are God’s servants and we must be content in doing God’s will. God is in no way indebted to us. The saints understood this very well by giving up their lives entirely to the service of God and humanity. Their reward of salvation is not a debt that God is paying to them; rather, the crowning of the saints is a manifestation of God’s glory.

(658 – 739)
He was the first of the great Anglo-Saxon missionaries to Europe and is remembered not just for his devotion in preaching the Gospel but also for his joyfulness of character and his holiness of life. He died at Echternach in Luxembourg in 739.

Meditation
In an age marked by multiplicity of conflicting religious doctrines and ideas, our responsibility for the gospel and fot the faith of one another is of utmost importance. We should defend the gospel from other teachings at variance with it, preserve the tradition legitimated by the gospel, correct errors and preach the gospel in a way that inspires true religion. A true religion is one that is nurtured by the knowledge of the truth of what God has revealed about himself in Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is the embodiment of true religion. Let us live a life of mutual building up, trusting in the Lord who assists us always and bears our failings.

St. Willibord, évêque, patron secondaire du Luxembourg
Willibord (658-739), moine bénédictin de Ripon en Angleterre, puis de Rathmelsing en Irlande, fut envoyé en Frise (690) pour y porter l’évangile. Après avoir été sacré évêque par le pape Sergius 1er, il établit son siège à Utrecht et fonda plusieurs monastères, notamment celui d’Echternach où il mourut.

Nous avons l’espérance de la vie éternelle, promise depuis toujours par Dieu qui ne ment pas. Aux temps fixés, il a manifesté sa parole dans la proclamation de l’Évangile qui m’a été confiée par ordre de Dieu notre Sauveur. Je m’adresse à toi, Tite, mon véritable enfant selon la foi qui nous est commune : à toi, la grâce et la paix de la part de Dieu le Père et du Christ Jésus notre Sauveur. Si je t’ai laissé en Crète, c’est pour que tu finisses de tout organiser et que, dans chaque ville, tu établisses des Anciens comme je te l’ai commandé moi-même. L’Ancien doit être quelqu’un qui soit sans reproche, époux d’une seule femme, ayant des enfants qui soient croyants et ne soient pas accusés d’inconduite ou indisciplinés. Il faut en effet que le responsable de communauté soit sans reproche, puisqu’il est l’intendant de Dieu ; il ne doit être ni arrogant, ni coléreux, ni buveur, ni brutal, ni avide de profits malhonnêtes ; mais il doit être ccueillant, ami du bien, raisonnable, juste, saint, maître de lui. Il doit être attaché à la parole digne de foi, celle qui est conforme à la doctrine, pour être capable d’exhorter en donnant un enseignement solide, et aussi de réfuter les opposants.

Il vaut mieux qu’on lui attache au cou une meule en pierre et qu’on le précipite à la mer, plutôt qu’il ne soit une occasion de chute pour un seul des petits que voilà. Prenez garde à vous-mêmes ! Si ton frère a commis un péché, fais-lui de vifs reproches, et, s’il se repent, pardonne-lui. Même si sept fois par jour il commet un péché contre toi, et que sept fois de suite il revienne à toi en disant : “Je me repens”, tu lui pardonneras. » Les Apôtres dirent au Seigneur : « Augmente en nous la foi ! » Le Seigneur répondit : « Si vous aviez de la foi, gros comme une graine de moutarde, vous auriez dit à l’arbre que voici : “Déracine-toi et va te planter dans la mer”, et il vous aurait obéi. »

En communauté nous ne devons pas être objet de chute et de scandale pour nos frères et sœurs. Nos communautés doivent être caractérisées par l’esprit de pardon. Vivre dans l’esprit du pardon c’est faire preuve de foi. Demandons donc au Christ, comme ses disciples, d’augmenter en nous la foi pour une vie harmonieuse d’ensemble.

There were seven brothers who were arrested with their mother. The king tried to force them to taste pig’s flesh, which the Law forbids, by torturing them with whips and scourges. One of them, acting as spokesman for the others, said, ‘What are you trying to find out from us? We are prepared to die rather than break the laws of our ancestors.’ With his last breath the second brother exclaimed, ‘Inhuman fiend, you may discharge us from this present life, but the King of the world will raise us up, since it is for his laws that we die, to live again for ever.’ After him, they amused themselves with the third, who on being asked for his tongue promptly thrust it out and boldly held out his hands, with these honourable words, ‘It was heaven that gave me these limbs; for the sake of his laws I disdain them; from him I hope to receive them again.’ The king and his attendants were astounded at the young man’s courage and his utter indifference to suffering. When this one was dead they subjected the fourth to the same savage torture. Some Sadducees – those who say that there is no resurrection – approached Jesus and they put this question to him, ‘Master, we have it from Moses in writing, that if a man’s married brother dies childless, the man must marry the widow to raise up children for his brother. Well then, there were seven brothers. The first, having married a wife, died childless. The second and then the third married the widow. And the same with all seven, they died leaving no children. Finally the woman herself died. Now, at the resurrection, to which of them will she be wife since she had been married to all seven?’ Jesus replied, ‘The children of this world take wives and husbands, but those who are judged worthy of a place in the other world and in the resurrection from the dead do not marry because they can no longer die, for they are the same as the angels, and being children of the resurrection they are sons of God. And Moses himself implies that the dead rise again, in the passage about the bush where he calls the Lord the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob. Now he is God, not of the dead, but of the living; for to him all men are in fact alive.’

Meditation
The first reading presents a moving story of the martyrdom of the seven brothers whose names are unknown but who are popularly called “The Maccabees.” One is fascinated by the courage of the seven brothers as presented in the first reading from 2 Maccabees who suffered martyrdom because they did not want to contravene the custom which forbade them to eat pork. It is faith in the resurrection that motivated them to lay down their lives. Jesus assures us in the gospel that the dead will be raised again because God is a God of the living and not of the dead. And where God is, life abounds in all its forms. We pray with St. Paul for courage to be steadfast in every good work and word.
