St. Eusebius

of Vercelli

(283 – 371)

 

He was born in Sardinia around 340 and was made the first bishop of Vercelli in Piedmont. He was a strong supporter of orthodoxy, and in 355 was sent into exile by the Emperor for refusing to sign the condemnation of St Athanasius that had been passed by the Council of Milan.

 

Entrance Antiphon : Ps 69: 2, 6

O God, come to my assistance; O Lord, make haste to help me! You are my rescuer, my help; O Lord, do not delay.

 

Collect

Draw near to your servants, O Lord, and answer their prayers with unceasing kindness, that, for those who glory in you as their Creator and guide, you may restore what you have created and keep safe what you have restored. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

 

First reading : Jeremiah 30:1-2,12-15,18-22

The word addressed to Jeremiah by the Lord: the Lord, the God of Israel says this: Write all the words I have spoken to you in a book. Yes, the Lord says this: Your wound is incurable, your injury past healing. There is no one to care for your sore, no medicine to make you well again. All your lovers have forgotten you, they look for you no more. Yes, I have struck you as an enemy strikes, with harsh punishment so great is your guilt, so many your sins. Why bother to complain about your wound? Your pain is incurable. So great is your guilt, so many your sins, that I have done all this to you. The Lord says this: Now I will restore the tents of Jacob, and take pity on his dwellings: the city shall be rebuilt on its ruins, the citadel restored on its site. From them will come thanksgiving and shouts of joy. I will make them increase, and not diminish them, make them honoured, and not disdained. Their sons shall be as once they were, their community fixed firm in my presence, and I will punish all their oppressors. Their prince will be one of their own, their ruler come from their own people. Gospel : Matthew 14:22-36

Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side while he would send the crowds away. After sending the crowds away he went up into the hills by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, while the boat, by now far out on the lake, was battling with a heavy sea, for there was a head-wind. In the fourth watch of the night he went towards them, walking on the lake, and when the disciples saw him walking on the lake they were terrified. ‘It is a ghost’ they said, and cried out in fear. But at once Jesus called out to them, saying, ‘Courage! It is I! Do not be afraid.’ It was Peter who answered. ‘Lord,’ he said ‘if it is you, tell me to come to you across the water.’ ‘Come’ said Jesus. Then Peter got out of the boat and started walking towards Jesus across the water, but as soon as he felt the force of the wind, he took fright and began to sink. ‘Lord! Save me!’ he cried. Jesus put out his hand at once and held him. ‘Man of little faith,’ he said ‘why did you doubt?’ And as they got into the boat the wind dropped. The men in the boat bowed down before him and said, ‘Truly, you are the Son of God.’ Having made the crossing, they came to land at Gennesaret. When the local people recognised him they spread the news through the whole neighbourhood and took all that were sick to him, begging him just to let them touch the fringe of his cloak. And all those who touched it were completely cured.

 

Prayer over the Offerings

Graciously sanctify these gifts, O Lord, we pray, and, accepting the oblation of this spiritual sacrifice, make of us an eternal offering to you. Through Christ our Lord.

 

Communion Antiphon : Wis 16: 20

You have given us, O Lord, bread from heaven, endowed with all delights and sweetness in every taste.

 

Prayer after Communion

Accompany with constant protection, O Lord, those you renew with these heavenly gifts and, in your never-failing care for them, make them worthy of eternal redemption. Through Christ our Lord.

 

Meditation

Ordinarily people do not walk on water, they swim. Our Gospel reading gives us the contrary.  Instead of swimming, Jesus walked on water. That Jesus walked on water showed His divinity, His supernatural status. Peter, touched by the incident, asked to come to Jesus over the water. As long as Peter kept his eyes on Jesus, he was able to walk on the water. However, when he took his eyes off Jesus and looked at the waves, he started to sink. Before then, all of them in the boat had thought that they were seeing a ghost, until Jesus assured them: ‘Courage! It is I! Do not be afraid.’  In looking up to Jesus, we have to let His word guide our lives.

St. Alphonsus Liguori

(1696 – 1787)

 

He was a Neapolitan lawyer who became a priest. He preached in the rural districts around Naples. His bishop asked him to establish an order of missionaries to work in the countryside, and the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (the Redemptorists) was formally established in 1749. Alphonsus lived an exceptionally holy life.

 

Entrance Antiphon : Cf. Lk 10: 38

In the midst of the Church he opened his mouth, and the Lord filled him with the spirit of wisdom and understanding and clothed him in a robe of glory.

 

Collect

O God, who constantly raise up in your Church new examples of virtue, grant that we may follow so closely in the footsteps of the Bishop Saint Alphonsus in his zeal for souls as to attain the same rewards that are his in heaven. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

 

First reading : Jeremiah 28:1-17

At the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah king of Judah in the fifth month of the fourth year, the prophet Hananiah son of Azzur, a Gibeonite, spoke as follows to Jeremiah in the Temple of the Lord in the presence of the priests and of all the people. ‘The Lord, the God of Israel, says this, “I have broken the yoke of the king of Babylon. In two years’ time I will bring back all the vessels of the Temple of the Lord which Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon carried off from this place and took to Babylon. And I will also bring back Jeconiah son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, and all the exiles of Judah who have gone to Babylon – it is the Lord who speaks. Yes, I am going to break the yoke of the king of Babylon.”’ The prophet Jeremiah then replied to the prophet Hananiah in front of the priests and all the people there in the Temple of the Lord. ‘I hope so’ the prophet Jeremiah said. ‘May the Lord do so. May he fulfil the words that you have prophesied and bring the vessels of the Temple of the Lord and all the exiles back to this place from Babylon. Listen carefully, however, to this word that I am now going to say for you and all the people to hear: From remote times, the prophets who preceded you and me prophesied war, famine and plague for many countries and for great kingdoms; but the prophet who prophesies peace can only be recognised as one truly sent by the Lord when his word comes true.’ The prophet Hananiah then took the yoke off the neck of the prophet Jeremiah and broke it. In front of all the people Hananiah then said, ‘The Lord says this, “This is how, two years hence, I will break the yoke of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and take it off the necks of all the nations.”’ At this, the prophet Jeremiah went away. After the prophet Hananiah had broken the yoke which he had taken off the neck of the prophet Jeremiah the word of the Lord was addressed to Jeremiah, ‘Go to Hananiah and tell him this, “The Lord says this: You can break wooden yokes? Right, I will make them iron yokes instead! For the Lord Sabaoth, the God of Israel, says this: An iron yoke is what I now lay on the necks of all these nations to subject them to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon. They will be subject to him; I have even given him the wild animals.”’ The prophet Jeremiah said to the prophet Hananiah, ‘Listen carefully, Hananiah: the Lord has not sent you; and thanks to you this people are now relying on what is false. Hence – the Lord says this, “I am going to throw you off the face of the earth: you are going to die this year since you have preached apostasy from the Lord.”’ The prophet Hananiah died the same year, in the seventh month.

R/  Lord, teach me your statutes.

 

  1. Keep me from the way of error and teach me your law. Do not take the word of truth from my mouth for I trust in your decrees.
  2. Let your faithful turn to me, those who know your will. Let my heart be blameless in your statutes lest I be ashamed.
  3. Though the wicked lie in wait to destroy me yet I ponder your will. I have not turned from your decrees; you yourself have taught me.

Gospel : Matthew 14:13-21

When Jesus received the news of John the Baptist’s death he withdrew by boat to a lonely place where they could be by themselves. But the people heard of this and, leaving the towns, went after him on foot. So as he stepped ashore he saw a large crowd; and he took pity on them and healed their sick. When evening came, the disciples went to him and said, ‘This is a lonely place, and the time has slipped by; so send the people away, and they can go to the villages to buy themselves some food.’ Jesus replied, ‘There is no need for them to go: give them something to eat yourselves.’ But they answered ‘All we have with us is five loaves and two fish.’ ‘Bring them here to me’ he said. He gave orders that the people were to sit down on the grass; then he took the five loaves and the two fish, raised his eyes to heaven and said the blessing. And breaking the loaves handed them to his disciples who gave them to the crowds. They all ate as much as they wanted, and they collected the scraps remaining; twelve baskets full. Those who ate numbered about five thousand men, to say nothing of women and children.

 

Prayer over the Offerings

Be pleased, O Lord, to enkindle our hearts with the celestial fire of your Spirit, just as you granted that Saint Alphonsus should celebrate these mysteries and by them offer himself to you as a holy sacrifice. Through Christ our Lord.

 

Communion Antiphon : Cf. Lk 12: 42

Behold a faithful and prudent steward to give them their allowance of food at the proper time.

 

Prayer after Communion

O God, who gave us Saint Alphonsus to be a faithful steward and preacher of this great mystery, grant that your faithful may receive it often and, receiving it, praise you without end. Through Christ our Lord.

 

 

Meditation

Our God always provides and cares for his people. On their journey to the Promised land, despite their occasional wailing and murmuring against God and Moses, God always provided for his people. One of the attributes of God in the Old Testament is thus  “Yahweh Jireh” – God the Provider. This is experienced even more in the New Testament. Christ was anointed with the Holy Ghost and with power and thus He went about doing good and caring for people in need. The feeding of the five thousand is a glaring example. He is a God who is ever ready to provide for His needy children. He did it in the past; He still does it in the present. What a good God! He does not provide only our physical or material needs; Saint Augustine of Hippo prayed: “O Lord, You have made us for Yourself and our hearts are restless until they rest in You.” In God alone, do we find satisfaction of both our material and spiritual needs.

St. Alphonse-Marie de Liguori, évêque et docteur de l’Église

 

D’abord brillant avocat napolitain, Alphonse (1696-1787), devenu prêtre à trente ans, se voue à la prédication parmi les pauvres et fonde la congrégation du Très Saint Rédempteur, destinée à évangéliser les campagnes. Nommé évêque de Sainte-Agathe-des-Goths dans la région de Naples, il doit abandonner la direction de sa congrégation.

 

 

Antienne d’ouverture : Lc 4, 8

« L’Esprit du Seigneur est sur moi, dit Jésus, parce que le Seigneur m’a consacré par l’onction. Il m’a envoyé porter la Bonne Nouvelle aux pauvres, apporter aux opprimés la libération. » .

 

Prière d’ouverture

Seigneur qui ne cesses d’éveiller dans ton Église de nouveaux modèles de vertu, fais-nous suivre les exemples de saint Alphonse-Marie de Liguori, remplis-nous d’ardeur pour le salut de nos frères, et nous obtiendrons comme lui le bonheur du ciel.. Par Jésus Christ.

 

1ère lecture : Jr 28, 1-17

Cette année-là, au début du règne de Sédécias, roi de Juda, la quatrième année, au cinquième mois, le prophète Ananie, fils d’Azzour, originaire de Gabaon, me dit dans la maison du Seigneur, en présence des prêtres et de tout le peuple : « Ainsi parle le Seigneur de l’univers, le Dieu d’Israël : J’ai brisé le joug du roi de Babylone ! Dans deux ans, jour pour jour, je ferai revenir en ce lieu tous les objets de la maison du Seigneur que Nabucodonosor, roi de Babylone, a enlevés pour les emporter à Babylone. Je ramènerai ici Jékonias, fils de Joakim, roi de Juda, avec tous les déportés de Juda qui sont partis à Babylone – oracle du Seigneur –, car je vais briser le joug du roi de Babylone ! » Le prophète Jérémie répondit au prophète Ananie en présence des prêtres et de tout le peuple, qui se tenaient dans la maison du Seigneur. Il lui dit : « Amen ! Que le Seigneur agisse ainsi, que le Seigneur accomplisse ta prophétie : qu’il fasse revenir de Babylone les objets de la maison du Seigneur et tous les déportés. Cependant, écoute bien cette parole que je vais te faire entendre, à toi et à tout le peuple : Les prophètes qui nous ont précédés, toi et moi, depuis bien longtemps, ont prophétisé contre de nombreux pays et de grands royaumes la guerre, le malheur et la peste. Le prophète qui annonce la paix n’est reconnu comme prophète vraiment envoyé par le Seigneur, que si sa parole s’accomplit. » Alors le prophète Ananie enleva le joug que le prophète Jérémie s’était mis sur la nuque, et il le brisa. Et Ananie déclara en présence de tout le peuple : « Ainsi parle le Seigneur : De la même manière, dans deux ans, jour pour jour, je briserai le joug de Nabucodonosor, roi de Babylone, pour en délivrer toutes les nations. » Alors le prophète Jérémie alla son chemin. La parole du Seigneur fut adressée à Jérémie après que le prophète Ananie eut brisé le joug qui était sur sa nuque. « Va dire à Ananie : Ainsi parle le Seigneur : Tu as brisé un joug de bois, mais à sa place tu feras un joug de fer. Car ainsi parle le Seigneur de l’univers, le Dieu d’Israël : C’est un joug de fer que je mets sur la nuque de toutes ces nations, pour qu’elles servent Nabucodonosor, roi de Babylone. Et elles le serviront. Je lui ai donné même les bêtes sauvages. » Le prophète Jérémie dit alors au prophète Ananie : « Écoute bien, Ananie : le Seigneur ne t’a pas envoyé, et toi, tu rassures ce peuple par un mensonge. C’est pourquoi, ainsi parle le Seigneur : Je te renvoie de la surface de la terre ; tu mourras cette année, car c’est la révolte que tu as prêchée contre le Seigneur. » Le prophète Ananie mourut cette même année, au septième mois.

R/ Seigneur, apprends-moi tes commandements. (Ps 118, 68b)

 

  1. Détourne-moi de la voie du mensonge, fais-moi la grâce de ta loi. N’ôte pas de ma bouche la parole de vérité, car j’espère tes décisions.
  2. Qu’ils se tournent vers moi, ceux qui te craignent, ceux qui connaissent tes exigences. Que j’aie par tes commandements le cœur intègre : alors je ne serai pas humilié.
  3. Des impies escomptent ma perte : moi, je réfléchis à tes exigences. De tes décisions, je ne veux pas m’écarter, car c’est toi qui m’enseignes.

 

Acclamation

Alléluia. Alléluia. L’homme ne vit pas seulement de pain, mais aussi de toute parole qui sort de la bouche de Dieu. Alléluia. (cf. Jn8, 12)

 

Évangile : Mt 14,13-21

Quand Jésus apprit cela, il se retira et partit en barque pour un endroit désert, à l’écart. Les foules l’apprirent et, quittant leurs villes, elles suivirent à pied. En débarquant, il vit une grande foule de gens ; il fut saisi de compassion envers eux et guérit leurs malades. Le soir venu, les disciples s’approchèrent et lui dirent : « L’endroit est désert et l’heure est déjà avancée. Renvoie donc la foule : qu’ils aillent dans les villages s’acheter de la nourriture ! » Mais Jésus leur dit : « Ils n’ont pas besoin de s’en aller. Donnez-leur vous-mêmes à manger. » Alors ils lui disent : « Nous n’avons là que cinq pains et deux poissons. » Jésus dit : « Apportez-les moi. » Puis, ordonnant à la foule de s’asseoir sur l’herbe, il prit les cinq pains et les deux poissons, et, levant les yeux au ciel, il prononça la bénédiction ; il rompit les pains, il les donna aux disciples, et les disciples les donnèrent à la foule. Ils mangèrent tous et ils furent rassasiés. On ramassa les morceaux qui restaient : cela faisait douze paniers pleins. Ceux qui avaient mangé étaient environ cinq mille, sans compter les femmes et les enfants.

 

Prière sur les offrandes

Dans ta bonté, Seigneur, avive en nos cœurs le feu de l’Esprit Saint, toi qui as donné à saint Alphonse-Marie la grâce de célébrer ces mystères en s’offrant lui-même comme une victime sainte. Par Jésus

 

Antienne de la communion : Lc 10, 1-9

Le Seigneur envoya ses disciples pour annoncer dans les villes : le Règne de Dieu est arrivé jusqu’à vous ».

 

Prière après la communion

Seigneur qui as fait de saint Alphonse-Marie un prédicateur et un ministre fidèle de l’eucharistie, accorde-nous de communier souvent à tes mystères et, en y communiant, de te bénir à jamais. Par Jésus.

 

 

Méditation

« Écoute bien, Ananie : le Seigneur ne t’a pas envoyé, et toi, tu rassures ce peuple par un mensonge. C’est pourquoi, ainsi parle le Seigneur : Je te renvoie de la surface de la terre ; tu mourras cette année, car c’est la révolte que tu as prêchée contre le Seigneur. » Frères et sœurs, cette parole du Seigneur nous invite à éviter de nous comporter comme le prophète Ananie qui veut plaire au peuple. Nous aimons  ce type de prophète qui nous annonce la liberté la réussite, la victoire, et refusons d’écouter la voix du Seigneur qui nous bouscule dans nos tares. Sachons faire confiance au Seigneur, même quand sa parole va à l’encontre de nos projets. Nous sommes des instruments entre ses mains et nous devons nous laisser guider par Lui.

Viens me délivrer, Seigneur, Dieu, viens vite à mon secours: Tu es mon aide et mon libérateur, Seigneur, ne tarde pas.

 

Prière  d’ouverture

Assiste tes enfants, Seigneur, et montre à ceux qui t’implorent ton inépuisable bonté; C’est leur fierté de t’avoir pour Créateur et Providence: restaure pour eux ta création, et l’ayant renouvelée, protège-la. Par Jésus Christ.

 

1ère lecture : Qo 1, 2 ; 2, 21-23

Vanité des vanités, disait Qohéleth. Vanité des vanités, tout est vanité ! Un homme s’est donné de la peine ; il est avisé, il s’y connaissait, il a réussi. Et voilà qu’il doit laisser son bien à quelqu’un qui ne s’est donné aucune peine. Cela aussi n’est que vanité, c’est un grand mal ! En effet, que reste-t-il à l’homme de toute la peine et de tous les calculs pour lesquels il se fatigue sous le soleil ? Tous ses jours sont autant de souffrances, ses occupations sont autant de tourments: même la nuit, son cœur n’a pas de repos. Cela aussi n’est que vanité.

 

Psaume 89 (90), 3-4, 5-6, 12-13, 14.17abc

R/   D’âge en âge, Seigneur, tu as été notre refuge. (Ps 89, 1)

 

  1. Tu fais retourner l’homme à la poussière; tu as dit : « Retournez, fils d’Adam ! » À tes yeux, mille ans sont comme hier, c’est un jour qui s’en va, une heure dans la nuit.
  2. Tu les as balayés : ce n’est qu’un songe ; dès le matin, c’est une herbe changeante : elle fleurit le matin, elle change ; le soir, elle est fanée, desséchée.
  3. Apprends-nous la vraie mesure de nos jours : que nos cœurs pénètrent la sagesse. Reviens, Seigneur, pourquoi tarder ? Ravise-toi par égard pour tes serviteurs.
  4. Rassasie-nous de ton amour au matin, que nous passions nos jours dans la joie et les chants. Que vienne sur nous la douceur du Seigneur notre Dieu ! Consolide pour nous l’ouvrage de nos mains.

 

2ème lecture : Colossiens 3, 1-5.9-11

Frères, si donc vous êtes ressuscités avec le Christ, recherchez les réalités d’en haut : c’est là qu’est le Christ, assis à la droite de Dieu. Pensez aux réalités d’en haut, non à celles de la terre. En effet, vous êtes passés par la mort, et votre vie reste cachée avec le Christ en Dieu. Quand paraîtra le Christ, votre vie, alors vous aussi, vous paraîtrez avec lui dans la gloire. Faites donc mourir en vous ce qui n’appartient qu’à la terre: débauche, impureté, passion, désir mauvais, et cette soif de posséder, qui est une idolâtrie. Plus de mensonge entre vous : vous vous êtes débarrassés de l’homme ancien qui était en vous et de ses façons d’agir, et vous vous êtes revêtus de l’homme nouveau qui, pour se conformer à l’image de son Créateur, se renouvelle sans cesse en vue de la pleine connaissance. Ainsi, il n’y a plus le païen et le Juif, le circoncis et l’incirconcis, il n’y a plus le barbare ou le primitif, l’esclave et l’homme libre; mais il y a le Christ : il est tout, et en tous.

Acclamation

Alléluia. Alléluia! Heureux les pauvres de cœur, car le royaume des Cieux est a eux!  Alléluia! (Mt 5, 3)

 

Évangile : Luc 12, 13-21

En ce temps-là, du milieu de la foule, quelqu’un demanda à Jésus : « Maître, dis à mon frère de partager avec moi notre héritage. » Jésus lui répondit : « Homme, qui donc m’a établi pour être votre juge ou l’arbitre de vos partages?» Puis, s’adressant à tous : « Gardez-vous bien de toute avidité, car la vie de quelqu’un, même dans l’abondance, ne dépend pas de ce qu’il possède. » Et il leur dit cette parabole : « Il y avait un homme riche, dont le domaine avait bien rapporté. Il se demandait: ‘Que vais-je faire ? Car je n’ai pas de place pour mettre ma récolte.’ Puis il se dit : ‘Voici ce que je vais faire : je vais démolir mes greniers, j’en construirai de plus grands et j’y mettrai tout mon blé et tous mes biens. Alors je me dirai à moi-même : Te voilà donc avec de nombreux biens à ta disposition, pour de nombreuses années. Repose-toi, mange, bois, jouis de l’existence.’ Mais Dieu lui dit : ‘Tu es fou : cette nuit même, on va te redemander ta vie. Et ce que tu auras accumulé, qui l’aura ?’ Voilà ce qui arrive à celui qui amasse pour lui-même, au lieu d’être riche en vue de Dieu. »

 

Prière sur les offrandes

Dans ta bonté, Seigneur, sanctifie ces dons ; Accepte le sacrifice spirituel de cette eucharistie, et fais de nous-mêmes une éternelle offrande à ta gloire. Par Jésus.

 

Antienne  de  communion : Sg 16, 20

Tu nous donnes, Seigneur, la vraie manne, ce pain venu du ciel qui comble tous les désirs.

 

Prière  après  la  communion

Seigneur, entoure d’une constante protection ceux que tu as renouvelés par le pain du ciel; Puisque tu ne cesses de les réconforter, rends-les dignes de l’éternel salut. Par Jésus.

 

 

Méditation

Un chrétien ne doit pas fonder sa joie dans ses avoirs matériels. Ce que nous possédons ne peut en aucun cas nous garantir la vie et le bien-être spirituel. Cet homme qui, du milieu de la foule, aborde Jésus est certes à la recherche de la justice venant d’un homme juste ! Mais Jésus utilise cette situation pour nous montrer le seul bien que nous devons rechercher : celui de la crainte de Dieu et le bon sens du partage. L’homme se réalise le plus dans le partage et l’entraide, et non dans l’avarice et la recherche effrénée de la sécurité matérielle.

Second reading : Colossians 3:1-5,9-11

Since you have been brought back to true life with Christ, you must look for the things that are in heaven, where Christ is, sitting at God’s right hand. Let your thoughts be on heavenly things, not on the things that are on the earth, because you have died, and now the life you have is hidden with Christ in God. But when Christ is revealed – and he is your life – you too will be revealed in all your glory with him. That is why you must kill everything in you that belongs only to earthly life: fornication, impurity, guilty passion, evil desires and especially greed, which is the same thing as worshipping a false god; and never tell each other lies. Graciously sanctify these gifts, O Lord, we pray, and, accepting the oblation of this spiritual sacrifice, make of us an eternal offering to you. Through Christ our Lord.

You have given us, O Lord, bread from heaven, endowed with all delights and sweetness in every taste.

 

Prayer after Communion

Accompany with constant protection, O Lord, those you renew with these heavenly gifts and, in your never-failing care for them, make them worthy of eternal redemption. Through Christ our Lord.

 

Meditation

We often waste time on passing things. We kill each other for the things of this world that will help us to go to hell than the things of God that will help us go to heaven. The first reading reminds us that all these things will pass away; that we work so hard for what we will soon let go – Vanity of vanities. Today in the Holy gospel, we see the desire for useless things. Jesus teaches that we must avoid greed to be able to grow and be productive. Above all, it is important to seek justice because without justice there is neither peace nor communion. Possessions do not give life. Therefore, we must make sure that our desire to have what we lack does not make us neglect what is going to give us life.

Elle était riche, mais un homme d’affaires la dépouilla de ses biens. Pendant la plaidoirie qui tournait à son avantage, elle fut victime d’une injustice. Le président du tribunal lui intima l’ordre d’offrir de l’encens aux idoles. Pour avoir refusé de s’exécuter, elle fut immédiatement condamnée à être brûlée vive.

Adorons Dieu dans sa sainte demeure. Il fait habiter les siens tous ensemble dans sa maison, c’est lui qui donne force et puissance à son peuple.

Tu protèges, Seigneur, ceux qui comptent sur toi, sans toi rien n’est fort et rien n’est saint. Multiplie pour nous tes gestes de miséricorde afin que, sous ta conduite, en faisant un bon usage des biens qui passent, nous puissions déjà nous attacher à ceux qui demeurent. Par Jésus Christ.

 

1ère lecture : Jr 26,11-19

En ces jours-là, les prêtres et les prophètes dirent aux princes et à tout le peuple : « Cet homme mérite la mort, car il a prophétisé contre cette ville ; vous l’avez entendu de vos oreilles. » À son tour Jérémie s’adressa à tous les princes et à tout le peuple : « C’est le Seigneur qui m’a envoyé prophétiser contre cette Maison et contre cette ville, et dire toutes les paroles que vous avez entendues. Et maintenant, rendez meilleurs vos chemins et vos actes, écoutez la voix du Seigneur votre Dieu ; alors il renoncera au malheur qu’il a proféré contre vous. Quant à moi, me voici entre vos mains, faites de moi ce qui vous semblera bon et juste. Mais sachez-le bien : si vous me faites mourir, vous allez vous charger d’un sang innocent, vous-mêmes et cette ville et tous ses habitants. Car c’est vraiment le Seigneur qui m’a envoyé vers vous proclamer toutes ces paroles pour que vous les entendiez. » Alors les princes et tout le peuple dirent aux prêtres et aux prophètes : « Cet homme ne mérite pas la mort, car c’est au nom du Seigneur notre Dieu qu’il nous a parlé. » Quelques-uns des anciens du pays se levèrent pour dire à toute l’assemblée du peuple : « Michée de Morésheth, qui était prophète au temps d’Ézékias, roi de Juda, a déclaré à tout le peuple de Juda : Ainsi parle le Seigneur de l’univers : Sion sera un champ qu’on laboure, Jérusalem, un monceau de décombres, et la montagne du Temple, des lieux sacrés envahis par la forêt. Est-ce que le roi de Juda, Ézékias, et tous les gens de Juda l’ont fait mourir ? Le roi n’a-t-il pas craint le Seigneur, n’a-t-il pas apaisé le visage du Seigneur, si bien que le Seigneur a renoncé au malheur qu’il avait proféré contre eux ? Et nous, nous irions faire ce grand mal à nous-mêmes ? »

  1. Tire-moi de la boue, sinon je m’enfonce: que j’échappe à ceux qui me haïssent, à l’abîme des eaux.

  3. Et moi, humilié, meurtri, que ton salut, Dieu, me redresse. Et je louerai le nom de Dieu par un cantique, je vais le magnifier, lui rendre grâce.

Évangile : Mt 14, 1-12

En ce temps-là, Hérode, qui était au pouvoir en Galilée, apprit la renommée de Jésus et dit à ses serviteurs : « Celui-là, c’est Jean le Baptiste, il est ressuscité d’entre les morts, et voilà pourquoi des miracles se réalisent par lui. » Car Hérode avait fait arrêter Jean, l’avait fait enchaîner et mettre en prison. C’était à cause d’Hérodiade, la femme de son frère Philippe. En effet, Jean lui avait dit : « Tu n’as pas le droit de l’avoir pour femme. »  Hérode cherchait à le faire mourir, mais il eut peur de la foule qui le tenait pour un prophète. Lorsqu’arriva l’anniversaire d’Hérode, la fille d’Hérodiade dansa au milieu des convives, et elle plut à Hérode. Alors il s’engagea par serment à lui donner ce qu’elle demanderait.  Poussée par sa mère, elle dit : « Donne-moi ici, sur un plat, la tête de Jean le Baptiste.»  Le roi fut contrarié ; mais à cause de son serment et des convives, il commanda de la lui donner. Il envoya décapiter Jean dans la prison.  La tête de celui-ci fut apportée sur un plat et donnée à la jeune fille, qui l’apporta à sa mère. Les disciples de Jean arrivèrent pour prendre son corps, qu’ils ensevelirent; puis ils allèrent l’annoncer à Jésus.

 

Prière  sur  les  offrandes

Accepte, Seigneur, ces offrandes prélevées pour toi sur tes propres largesses. Que ces mystères très saints, où ta grâce opère avec puissance, sanctifient notre vie de tous les jours et nous conduisent aux joies éternelles. Par Jésus

Méditation

Dans l’évangile, Jean-Baptiste est décapité pour avoir annoncé le droit et la justice. De même le prophète Jérémie est traduit en procès pour avoir parlé au nom du Seigneur. Il apparaît que le témoin de la Bonne Nouvelle est un martyr, martyr pour le Christ qui lui-même a souffert le martyre. Aujourd’hui de nombreuses personnes vivent au quotidien ce martyre parce qu’ils ont décidé de vivre leur foi dans un monde où la Bonne Nouvelle ne trouve pas toujours un accueil favorable. Face à la persécution, souvenons-nous de ces paroles de Jésus dans l’évangile : « Heureux ceux qui sont persécutés pour la justice, car le royaume des cieux est à eux ! »

Chrysologus

(380 – 450)

 

He was born and died in Imola in northern Italy. The name “Chrysologus” means “golden speech”, and was given to Peter because he was such a gifted preacher; unfortunately, most of his writings have perished, and only a collection of short sermons remains.

 

 

Entrance Antiphon : Cf. Ps 67: 6-7, 36

God is in his holy place, God who unites those who dwell in his house; he himself gives might and strength to his people.

O God, protector of those who hope in you, without whom nothing has firm foundation, nothing is holy, bestow in abundance your mercy upon us and grant that, with you as our ruler and guide, we may use the good things that pass in such a way as to hold fast even now to those that ever endure. First reading : Jeremiah 26:11-16,24

The priests and prophets addressed the officials and all the people, ‘This man deserves to die, since he has prophesied against this city, as you have heard with your own ears.’ Jeremiah, however, replied to the people as follows: ‘The Lord himself sent me to say all the things you have heard against this Temple and this city. So now amend your behaviour and actions, listen to the voice of the Lord your God: if you do, he will relent and not bring down on you the disaster he has pronounced against you. For myself, I am as you see in your hands. Do whatever you please or think right with me. But be sure of this, that if you put me to death, you will be bringing innocent blood on yourselves, on this city and on its citizens, since the Lord has truly sent me to you to say all these words in your hearing.’ The officials and all the people then said to the priests and prophets, ‘This man does not deserve to die: he has spoken to us in the name of the Lord our God.’ Jeremiah had a protector in Ahikam son of Shaphan, so he was not handed over to the people to be put to death.

R/ In your great love, answer me, O God.

 

  1. Rescue me from sinking in the mud; save me from my foes. Save me from the waters of the deep lest the waves overwhelm me. Do not let the deep engulf me nor death close its mouth on me.
  2. As for me in my poverty and pain let your help, O God, lift me up. I will praise God’s name with a song; I will glorify him with thanksgiving.
  3. The poor when they see it will be glad and God-seeking hearts will revive; for the Lord listens to the needy and does not spurn his servants in their chains.

Gospel : Matthew 14:1-12

Herod the tetrarch heard about the reputation of Jesus, and said to his court, ‘This is John the Baptist himself; he has risen from the dead, and that is why miraculous powers are at work in him.’ Now it was Herod who had arrested John, chained him up and put him in prison because of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife. For John had told him, ‘It is against the Law for you to have her.’ He had wanted to kill him but was afraid of the people, who regarded John as a prophet. Then, during the celebrations for Herod’s birthday, the daughter of Herodias danced before the company, and so delighted Herod that he promised on oath to give her anything she asked. Prompted by her mother she said, ‘Give me John the Baptist’s head,  here, on a dish.’ The king was distressed but, thinking of the oaths he had sworn and of his guests, he ordered it to be given her, and sent and had John beheaded in the prison. The head was brought in on a dish and given to the girl who took it to her mother. John’s disciples came and took the body and buried it; then they went off to tell Jesus.

Accept, O Lord, we pray, the offerings which we bring from the abundance of your gifts, that through the powerful working of your grace, these most sacred mysteries may sanctify our present way of life and lead us to eternal gladness. Through Christ our Lord.

Meditation

“Give me John the Baptist’s head, here, in a dish.” This may have been one of the requests the king did not expect. Obviously, the request is not from the girl, she has nothing to do with the head of John. The reading mentions how Herodias has been looking for an opportunity to kill John and surely the king knew. If the king finally granted the request, he was also responsible for the death of John. The lesson to learn from the story from the gospel is that we must be careful with the kind of promises we make. Secondly, the fulfilment of whatever promise must be discerned with wisdom. If the king had applied wisdom, he would have known that the request was not from the girl and in such situation, he was not bound to fulfil it.

St. Martha

 

“Jesus loved Martha and Mary and Lazarus.” This statement in John’s gospel tells us of the special relationship Jesus had with Martha, her sister, and her brother. Apparently Jesus was a frequent guest at Martha’s home in Bethany, a small village two miles from Jerusalem. We read of three visits in Luke 10:38-42, John 11:1-53, and John 12:1-9.

Jesus entered a village, where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home.

 

Collect

Almighty ever-living God, whose Son was pleased to be welcomed in Saint Martha’s house as a guest, grant, we pray, that through her intercession, serving Christ faithfully in our brothers and sisters, we may merit to be received by you in the halls of heaven. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

 

First reading : Jeremiah 26:1-9

At the beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim son of Josiah, king of Judah, this word was addressed to Jeremiah by the Lord, ‘The Lord says this: Stand in the court of the Temple of the Lord. To all the people of the towns of Judah who come to worship in the Temple of the Lord you must speak all the words I have commanded you to tell them; do not omit one syllable. Perhaps they will listen and each turn from his evil way: if so, I shall relent and not bring the disaster on them which I intended for their misdeeds. Say to them, “The Lord says this: If you will not listen to me by following my Law which I put before you, by paying attention to the words of my servants the prophets whom I send so persistently to you, without your ever listening to them, I will treat this Temple as I treated Shiloh, and make this city a curse for all the nations of the earth.”’ The priests and prophets and all the people heard Jeremiah say these words in the Temple of the Lord. When Jeremiah had finished saying everything that the Lord had ordered him to say to all the people, the priests and prophets seized hold of him and said, ‘You shall die! Why have you made this prophecy in the name of the Lord, “This Temple will be like Shiloh, and this city will be desolate, and uninhabited”?’ And the people were all crowding round Jeremiah in the Temple of the Lord.

  1. More numerous than the hair on my head are those who hate me without cause. Those who attack me with lies are too much for my strength. How can I restore what I have never stolen?

Many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to sympathise with them over their brother. When Martha heard that Jesus had come she went to meet him. Mary remained sitting in the house. Martha said to Jesus, ‘If you had been here, my brother would not have died, but I know that, even now, whatever you ask of God, he will grant you.’ ‘Your brother’ said Jesus to her ‘will rise again.’ Martha said, ‘I know he will rise again at the resurrection on the last day.’ Jesus said: ‘I am the resurrection and the life. If anyone believes in me, even though he dies he will live, and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?’ ‘Yes, Lord,’ she said ‘I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, the one who was to come into this world.’

As we proclaim your wonders in Saint Martha, O Lord, we humbly implore your majesty, that, as her homage of love was pleasing to you, so, too, our dutiful service may find favour in your sight. Through Christ our Lord.

Martha said to Jesus: You are the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming into this world.

 

Prayer after Communion

May the holy reception of the Body and Blood of your Only Begotten Son, O Lord, turn us away from the cares of this fallen world, so that, following the example of Saint Martha, we may grow in sincere love for you on earth and rejoice to behold you for eternity in heaven. Through Christ our Lord.

 

Meditation

“If you had been here, my brother would not have died.” Whenever we have Jesus with us, death is far from us, but the moment we take Jesus out of our lives, death becomes imminent. Whoever believes that Jesus is the way, the truth and the life, will, like Martha, “Lord, I have come to believe that you are the Christ, the son of God, he who is coming into the world”. What profession of faith is more than Martha’s. These sisters profess their belief in the son of God. While Martha made her profession of faith today, Mary will soon announce the message of the resurrection to the apostles. Let all those who believe in the Son of God hold firm to Him so that they will have Everlasting Life. “He who believes in me shall not die, even if he dies, he will have Everlasting Life.”

Alors il recommença, et il fit un autre vase, selon ce qu’il est bon de faire, aux yeux d’un potier. Alors la parole du Seigneur me fut adressée: « Maison d’Israël, est-ce que je ne pourrais pas vous traiter comme fait ce potier ? – oracle du Seigneur. Oui, comme l’argile est dans la main du potier, ainsi êtes-vous dans ma main, maison d’Israël! »

R/   Heureux qui s’appuie sur le Dieu de Jacob.

 

  1. Chante, ô mon âme, la louange du Seigneur ! Je veux louer le Seigneur tant que je vis, chanter mes hymnes pour mon Dieu tant que je dure.

Quand il est plein, on le tire sur le rivage, on s’assied, on ramasse dans des paniers ce qui est bon, et on rejette ce qui ne vaut rien. Ainsi en sera-t-il à la fin du monde : les anges sortiront pour séparer les méchants du milieu des justes et les jetteront dans la fournaise : là, il y aura des pleurs et des grincements de dents. » « Avez-vous compris tout cela ? » Ils lui répondent : « Oui ». Jésus ajouta : « C’est pourquoi tout scribe devenu disciple du royaume des Cieux est comparable à un maître de maison qui tire de son trésor du neuf et de l’ancien. » Lorsque Jésus eut terminé ces paraboles, il s’éloigna de là.

Le prophète Jérémie dans la première lecture de ce jour nous invite à nous laisser façonner par Dieu à l’image de l’argile dans les mains du potier. Cela suppose une totale confiance en Dieu. C’est pour cette raison que le psalmiste souligne la joie de celui qui s’appuie sur le Seigneur. S’appuyer sur le Seigneur, c’est faire de lui le fondement de notre existence. Ainsi nous n’aurons pas à craindre le jour du jugement.

St. Victor

(d. 198)

 

Victor, an African by birth, was elected pope in 189. During his pontificate, which lasted until 198, he settled the controversy over the date of Easter. After much consultation and discussion, the decision was taken to celebrate it on Sunday throughout the Church. He was the first pope from Africa.

 

Entrance Antiphon : Cf. Ps 67: 6-7, 36

God is in his holy place, God who unites those who dwell in his house; he himself gives might and strength to his people.

 

Collect

O God, protector of those who hope in you, without whom nothing has firm foundation, nothing is holy, bestow in abundance your mercy upon us and grant that, with you as our ruler and guide, we may use the good things that pass in such a way as to hold fast even now to those that ever endure. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

 

First reading : Jeremiah 18:1-6

The word that was addressed to Jeremiah by the Lord, ‘Get up and make your way down to the potter’s house; there I shall let you hear what I have to say.’ So I went down to the potter’s house; and there he was, working at the wheel. And whenever the vessel he was making came out wrong, as happens with the clay handled by potters, he would start afresh and work it into another vessel, as potters do. Then this word of the Lord was addressed to me, ‘House of Israel, can not I do to you what this potter does? – it is the Lord who speaks. Yes, as the clay is in the potter’s hand, so you are in mine, House of Israel.’

 

 

Psalm 145:2-6

R/ He is happy who is helped by Jacob’s God.

 

  1. My soul, give praise to the Lord. I will praise the Lord all my days, make music to my God while I live.
  2. Put no trust in princes, In mortal men in whom there is no help. Take their breath, they return to clay and their plans that day come to nothing.

Gospel : Matthew 13:47-53

Jesus said to the crowds, ‘The kingdom of heaven is like a dragnet cast into the sea that brings in a haul of all kinds. When it is full, the fishermen haul it ashore; then, sitting down, they collect the good ones in a basket and throw away those that are no use. This is how it will be at the end of time: the angels will appear and separate the wicked from the just to throw them into the blazing furnace where there will be weeping and grinding of teeth. ‘Have you understood all this?’ They said, ‘Yes.’ And he said to them, ‘Well then, every Scribe who becomes a disciple of the kingdom of heaven is like a householder who brings out from his storeroom things both new and old.’

 

Prayer over the Offerings

Accept, O Lord, we pray, the offerings which we bring from the abundance of your gifts, that through the powerful working of your grace, these most sacred mysteries may sanctify our present way of life and lead us to eternal gladness. Through Christ our Lord.

Prayer after Communion

We have consumed, O Lord, this divine Sacrament, the perpetual memorial of the Passion of your Son; grant, we pray, that this gift, which he himself gave us with love beyond all telling, may profit us for salvation. Through Christ our Lord.

 

 

Meditation

When Jesus sent out the seventy, He gave them the mission to make disciples of all nations. The mission of the Church is to gather the good and the bad. The image of the net is that of the Church which gathers everyone. Even though the Church has a mission to gather, there will be judgement at the end through which many will be selected. Those who had refused to repent will be thrown into the blazing furnace. The same Church with the mission to safe her members, adopted purgatory as a place of purification for those who still take their time to repent. Let us join the Church to continue praying especially for the souls undergoing purification in purgatory.
