Elle subit le martyre à Cordoue, en Espagne, en même temps que saint Aurèle, son époux. La tradition dit qu’elle était musulmane avant de se convertir à la foi chrétienne.

Adorons Dieu dans sa sainte demeure. Il fait habiter les siens tous ensemble dans sa maison, c’est lui qui donne force et puissance à son peuple.

 

Prière  d’ouverture

Tu protèges, Seigneur, ceux qui comptent sur toi, sans toi rien n’est fort et rien n’est saint. Multiplie pour nous tes gestes de miséricorde afin que, sous ta conduite, en faisant un bon usage des biens qui passent, nous puissions déjà nous attacher à ceux qui demeurent. Par Jésus Christ.

 

1ère lecture : Jr 15, 10.16-21

C’est pour mon malheur, ô ma mère, que tu m’as enfanté, homme de querelle et de dispute pour tout le pays. Je ne suis le créancier ni le débiteur de personne, et pourtant tout le monde me maudit! Seigneur, quand je rencontrais tes paroles, je les dévorais ; elles faisaient ma joie, les délices de mon cœur, parce que ton nom était invoqué sur moi, Seigneur, Dieu de l’univers. Jamais je ne me suis assis dans le cercle des moqueurs pour m’y divertir ; sous le poids de ta main, je me suis assis à l’écart, parce que tu m’as rempli d’indignation. Pourquoi ma souffrance est-elle sans fin, ma blessure, incurable, refusant la guérison ? Serais-tu pour moi un mirage, comme une eau incertaine ? Voilà pourquoi, ainsi parle le Seigneur : « Si tu reviens, si je te fais revenir, tu reprendras ton service devant moi. Si tu sépares ce qui est précieux de ce qui est méprisable, tu seras comme ma propre bouche. C’est eux qui reviendront  vers toi, et non pas toi qui reviendras vers eux. Je fais de toi pour ce peuple un rempart de bronze infranchissable ; ils te combattront, mais ils ne pourront rien contre toi, car je suis avec toi pour te sauver et te délivrer – oracle du Seigneur. Je te délivrerai de la main des méchants, je t’affranchirai de la poigne des puissants. »

R/   Dieu, mon rempart au temps de la détresse !

 

  1. Délivre-moi de mes ennemis, mon Dieu; de mes agresseurs, protège-moi.Délivre-moi des hommes criminels; des meurtriers, sauve-moi.
  2. Voici qu’on me prépare une embuscade : des puissants se jettent sur moi. Je n’ai commis ni faute, ni péché, ni le mal, Seigneur, pourtant ils accourent et s’installent.

En ce temps-là, Jésus disait aux foules: « Le royaume des Cieux est comparable à un trésor caché dans un champ ; l’homme qui l’a découvert le cache de nouveau. Dans sa joie, il va vendre tout ce qu’il possède, et il achète ce champ. Ou encore : Le royaume des Cieux est comparable à un négociant qui recherche des perles fines. Ayant trouvé une perle de grande valeur, il va vendre tout ce qu’il possède, et il achète la perle. »

 

Prière  sur  les  offrandes

Accepte, Seigneur, ces offrandes prélevées pour toi sur tes propres largesses. Que ces mystères très saints, où ta grâce opère avec puissance, sanctifient notre vie de tous les jours et nous conduisent aux joies éternelles. Par Jésus.

Méditation

Posséder un trésor en ce monde est source de grande richesse. L’Evangile que nous méditons ce jour attire notre attention sur la valeur inestimable du royaume des cieux. Entrer en possession de ce trésor inestimable qu’est le royaume des cieux implique des sacrifices. Autrement dit, il est question pour chacun de se déposséder de tout ce qui l’encombre dans sa quête de Dieu.

Blessed Titus Brandsma

(1881 – 1942)

 

He was born in Bolsward in the Netherlands. He was vehemently opposed to Nazi ideology. He was arrested in January 1942, when he tried to persuade Dutch Catholic newspapers not to print Nazi propaganda (as was required by the law of the Nazi German occupiers). Titus Brandsma was killed by lethal injection in Dachau on July 26, 1942.

God is in his holy place, God who unites those who dwell in his house; he himself gives might and strength to his people.

Meditation

Whenever one values of something, he does everything to possess that thing.  A true Christian who knows the value of Christianity and will do all it takes to uphold Christian values. The parable of the treasure in today’s gospel invites us not to let opportunities pass by as far as the kingdom of God is concerned. Many have been longing for such a treasure. We are assured that if truly know the value of what we are looking for, we will find it. This can be found in we least expect like a forgiving word and a friendly smile in which the other person finds joy and happiness. As the founder buries the treasure again, may we also preserve this treasure with much care as we work hard to have it.

parents de la Vierge Marie

 

Qui donna la vie à la femme appelée à la transmettre au Sauveur du monde ? Nous ne savons rien des parents de Marie, pas même leurs noms, sauf ce que nous disent des écrits légendaires qui semblent calqués sur des écrits de l’Ancien Testament. Il est néanmoins légitime de leur rendre un culte qui exprime notre gratitude pour le rôle qu’ils ont joué dans l’histoire du salut.

S’appuyer sur le Seigneur en toute circonstance. Telle est le message qui ressort des textes que nous méditons ce jour. Le psalmiste dit : « Pour la gloire de ton nom, Seigneur, délivre-nous ! » C’est dans cette dynamique que l’alliance entre Dieu et son peuple, auquel nous appartenons, nous conduit à fonder sur lui notre espérance. Lui seul est à même de nous aider dans notre lutte quotidienne afin de triompher du mal et d’être compté parmi ceux qui auront part à son Royaume.

An ancient tradition, already known in the 2nd century, gives these names to the parents of the Virgin Mary. The cult of St Anna became popular in the 6th century in the East, and in the 10th century in the West, where she is the patron saint of Brittany; Joachim was added a long time later – too often the fate of fathers.

Let us praise Joachim and Anne, to whom, in their generation, the Lord gave him who was a blessing for all the nations.

 

Collect

O Lord, God of our Fathers, who bestowed on Saints Joachim and Anne this grace, that of them should be born the Mother of your incarnate Son, grant, through the prayers of both, that we may attain the salvation you have promised to your people. Receive, we pray, O Lord, these offerings of our homage, and grant that we may merit a share in the same blessing which you promised to Abraham and his descendants. Through Christ our Lord.

They received blessings from the Lord and mercy from God their Saviour.

 

Prayer after Communion

O God, who willed that your Only Begotten Son should be born from among humanity so that by a wonderful mystery, humanity might be born again from you, we pray that, in your kindness,  you may sanctify by the spirit of adoption those you have fed with the Bread you give your children. Through Christ our Lord.

 

Meditation

In Jesus’ time, parables were among the common ways of teaching and passing across messages. Jesus’ explanation of the parable tells us that, the kingdom of God exists in the world and grows. In the world, we have good and bad people but the light of God shines on all of them. God gives enough time for His children so that some can repent. There will be judgement, meaning good that some people will still not make use of the time given to them. If we stand for what is right and denounce evil, you will shine like the sun in the kingdom of God.

(44)

 

He was the brother of St John and, like him, a fisherman. He was one of the witnesses of the Transfiguration and one of those who slept through most of the Agony in the Garden. He was the first of the apostles to be martyred, being beheaded by King Herod Agrippa I to please the Jewish opponents of Christianity. He was buried in Jerusalem.

 

Entrance Antiphon : Cf. Mt 4: 18, 21

As he walked by the Sea of Galilee, Jesus saw James the son of Zebedee and John his brother mending their nets and he called them.

 

Collect

Almighty ever-living God, who consecrated the first fruits of your Apostles by the blood of Saint James, grant, we pray, that your Church may be strengthened by his confession of faith and constantly sustained by his protection. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

 

First reading : 2 Corinthians 4:7-15

We are only the earthenware jars that hold this treasure, to make it clear that such an overwhelming power comes from God and not from us. We are in difficulties on all sides, but never cornered; we see no answer to our problems, but never despair; we have been persecuted, but never deserted; knocked down, but never killed; always, wherever we may be, we carry with us in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus, too, may always be seen in our body. The mother of Zebedee’s sons came with her sons to make a request of him, and bowed low; and he said to her, ‘What is it you want?’ She said to him, ‘Promise that these two sons of mine may sit one at your right hand and the other at your left in your kingdom.’ ‘You do not know what you are asking’ Jesus answered. ‘Can you drink the cup that I am going to drink?’ They replied, ‘We can.’ ‘Very well,’ he said ‘you shall drink my cup, but as for seats at my right hand and my left, these are not mine to grant; they belong to those to whom they have been allotted by my Father.’ When the other ten heard this they were indignant with the two brothers. But Jesus called them to him and said, ‘You know that among the pagans the rulers lord it over  them, and their great men make their authority felt. This is not to happen among you. No; anyone who wants to be great among you must be your servant, and anyone who wants to be first among you must be your slave, just as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.’

Cleanse us, Lord, by the saving baptism of your Son’s Passion, so that on the Feast of Saint James, whom you willed to be the first among the Apostles to drink of Christ’s chalice of suffering, we may offer a sacrifice pleasing to you. Through Christ our Lord.

They drank the chalice of the Lord, and became the friends of God.

 

Prayer after Communion

Help us, O Lord, we pray, through the intercession of the blessed Apostle James, on whose feast day we have received with joy your holy gifts. Through Christ our Lord.

 

Meditation

The kingdom that Jesus Christ preached is not that of prestige and pride. For Jesus’ leadership is all about service. When Jesus’ days drew near, He took the road to Jerusalem. Some of His followers started asking to know his position. Whoever wants to have a leadership position in the Kingdom of God must be able to drink the same cup that Jesus drank; the cup of suffering. The Master made Himself obedient, took the condition of a slave and ended up on the cross. How many of the followers of Christ are willing to identify themselves with the cup of salvation today? Our preachers have all turned away from the cross. Leadership has become something of gain, something that brings us wealth and a tool to maltreat others. Let us, therefore, revisit the leadership of Jesus Christ.

St. Jacques, apôtre

 

L’Apôtre Jacques le Majeur qui, depuis le 9e siècle attire les pèlerins sur les routes de Compostelle, fut, avec Jean son frère et avec Simon-Pierre, le témoin de la transfiguration et de l’agonie de Jésus.

 

 

Antienne  d’ouverture

Comme il cheminait le long de la mer de Galilée, Jésus aperçut Jacques, fils de Zébédée, et Jean son frère, en train d’arranger leurs filets ; et il les appela.

 

Prière  d’ouverture

Dieu tout-puissant, puisque saint Jacques fut le premier de tes Apôtres à offrir sa vie pour l’évangile, accorde à ton Eglise de trouver dans son témoignage une force, et dans sa protection un appui. Par Jésus Christ.

 

1ère lecture : 2 Co 4, 7-15

Frères, nous portons un trésor comme dans des vases d’argile ; ainsi, on voit bien que cette puissance extraordinaire appartient à Dieu et ne vient pas de nous. En toute circonstance, nous sommes dans la détresse, mais sans être angoissés; nous sommes déconcertés, mais non désemparés; nous sommes pourchassés, mais non pas abandonnés; terrassés, mais non pas anéantis.  Toujours nous portons, dans notre corps, la mort de Jésus, afin que la vie de Jésus, elle aussi, soit manifestée dans notre corps. En effet, nous, les vivants, nous sommes continuellement livrés à la mort à cause de Jésus, afin que la vie de Jésus, elle aussi, soit manifestée dans notre condition charnelle vouée à la mort.  Ainsi la mort fait son œuvre en nous, et la vie en vous. L’Écriture dit : J’ai cru, c’est pourquoi j’ai parlé. Et nous aussi, qui avons le même esprit de foi, nous croyons et c’est pourquoi nous parlons.  Car, nous le savons, celui qui a ressuscité le Seigneur Jésus nous ressuscitera, nous aussi, avec Jésus et il nous placera près de lui avec vous. Et tout cela, c’est pour vous, afin que la grâce plus largement répandue dans un plus grand nombre fasse abonder l’action de grâce pour la gloire de Dieu.

  1. Quand le Seigneur ramena les captifs à Sion, nous étions comme en rêve! Alors notre bouche était pleine de rires, nous poussions des cris de joie.

Évangile : Mt 20, 20-28

En ce temps-là, la mère de Jacques et de Jean, fils de Zébédée, s’approcha de Jésus avec ses fils Jacques et Jean et elle se prosterna pour lui faire une demande. Jésus lui dit : « Que veux-tu ? » Elle répondit :« Ordonne que mes deux fils que voici siègent, l’un à ta droite et l’autre à ta gauche dans ton Royaume.» Jésus répondit : « Vous ne savez pas ce que vous demandez. Pouvez-vous boire la coupe que je vais boire ? » Ils lui disent : « Nous le pouvons. »  Il leur dit: « Ma coupe, vous la boirez ;quant à siéger à ma droite et à ma gauche, ce n’est pas à moi de l’accorder ; il y a ceux pour qui cela est préparé par mon Père. »  Les dix autres, qui avaient entendu, s’indignèrent contre les deux frères.  Jésus les appela et dit : « Vous le savez: les chefs des nations les commandent en maîtres et les grands font sentir leur pouvoir. Parmi vous, il ne devra pas en être ainsi : celui qui veut devenir grand parmi vous sera votre serviteur ;   et celui qui veut être parmi vous le premier sera votre esclave. Ainsi, le Fils de l’homme n’est pas venu pour être servi mais pour servir et donner sa vie en rançon pour la multitude. »

 

Prière  sur  les  offrandes

Purifie-nous, Seigneur, par le baptême de la passion de ton Fils, et nous pourrons t’offrir un sacrifice qui te plaise en la fête de saint Jacques qui fut le premier des Apôtres à boire à la coupe du Christ. Lui qui.

Les deux frères Jacques et Jean ont partagé la coupe du Seigneur, ils sont devenus les amis de Dieu.

A la prière de l’Apôtre saint Jacques, viens à notre aide, Seigneur, en ce jour où pour célébrer sa fête nous avons reçu dans la joie tes dons sacrés. Par Jésus.

 

 

Méditation

Le témoignage que le disciple du Christ est appelé à donner chaque jour le conduit à des épreuves de tout ordre. Face à ces épreuves, il ne trouvera les forces nécessaires pour toujours témoigner l’espérance qui l’anime en s’appuyant sur le Christ qui a souffert la passion, est mort et est ressuscité. C’est en ce sens que l’Eglise nous donne de célébrer en ce jour Saint Jacques, premier apôtre à offrir sa vie pour l’Evangile. Puissions-nous trouver par son intercession les grâces pour être des témoins fidèles de la Bonne Nouvelle.

Tu protèges, Seigneur, ceux qui comptent sur toi; sans toi rien n’est fort et rien n’est saint : Multiplie pour nous tes gestes de miséricorde afin que, sous ta conduite, en faisant un bon usage des biens qui passent, nous puissions déjà nous attacher à ceux qui demeurent. Par Jésus Christ.

 

1ère lecture : Genèse 18, 20-32

En ces jours-là, les trois visiteurs d’Abraham allaient partir pour Sodome. Alors le Seigneur dit : « Comme elle est grande, la clameur au sujet de Sodome et de Gomorrhe ! Et leur faute, comme elle est lourde ! Je veux descendre pour voir si leur conduite correspond à la clameur venue jusqu’à moi. Si c’est faux, je le reconnaîtrai.» Les hommes se dirigèrent vers Sodome, tandis qu’Abraham demeurait devant le Seigneur. Abraham s’approcha et dit : « Vas-tu vraiment faire périr le juste avec le coupable ? Peut-être y a-t-il cinquante justes dans la ville. Vas-tu vraiment les faire périr ? Ne pardonneras-tu pas à toute la ville à cause des cinquante justes qui s’y trouvent ? Loin de toi de faire une chose pareille! Faire mourir le juste avec le coupable, traiter le juste de la même manière que le coupable, loin de toi d’agir ainsi! Celui qui juge toute la terre n’agirait-il pas selon le droit ? » Le Seigneur déclara : « Si je trouve cinquante justes dans Sodome, à cause d’eux je pardonnerai à toute la ville. » Abraham répondit : « J’ose encore parler à mon Seigneur, moi qui suis poussière et cendre. Peut-être, sur les cinquante justes, en manquera-t-il cinq : pour ces cinq-là, vas-tu détruire toute la ville ? » Il déclara : « Non, je ne la détruirai pas, si j’en trouve quarante-cinq. » Abraham insista: « Peut-être s’en trouvera-t-il seulement quarante?» Le Seigneur déclara : « Pour quarante, je ne le ferai pas. » Abraham dit: «Que mon Seigneur ne se mette pas en colère, si j’ose parler encore. Peut-être s’en trouvera-t-il seulement trente?» Il déclara: « Si j’en trouve trente, je ne le ferai pas. » Abraham dit alors : « J’ose encore parler à mon Seigneur. Peut-être s’en trouvera-t-il seulement vingt?» Il déclara : « Pour vingt, je ne détruirai pas. » Il dit : « Que mon Seigneur ne se mette pas en colère: je ne parlerai plus qu’une fois. Peut-être s’en trouvera-t-il seulement dix ? » Et le Seigneur déclara: « Pour dix, je ne détruirai pas. »

 

Psaume : 137 (138), 1-2a, 2bc-3, 6-7ab, 7c-8)

R/    Le jour où je t’appelle, réponds-moi, Seigneur. (cf. Ps 137, 3)

 

  1. De tout mon cœur, Seigneur, je te rends grâce : tu as entendu les paroles de ma bouche. Je te chante en présence des anges, vers ton temple sacré, je me prosterne.
  2. Je rends grâce à ton nom pour ton amour et ta vérité, car tu élèves, au-dessus de tout, ton nom et ta parole. Le jour où tu répondis à mon appel, tu fis grandir en mon âme la force.
  3. Si haut que soit le Seigneur, il voit le plus humble ; de loin, il reconnaît l’orgueilleux. Si je marche au milieu des angoisses, tu me fais vivre, ta main s’abat sur mes ennemis en colère.

2ème lecture : Colossiens 2, 12-14

Frères, dans le baptême, vous avez été mis au tombeau avec le Christ et vous êtes ressuscités avec lui par la foi en la force de Dieu qui l’a ressuscité d’entre les morts. Vous étiez des morts, parce que vous aviez commis des fautes et n’aviez pas reçu de circoncision dans votre chair. Mais Dieu vous a donné la vie avec le Christ : il nous a pardonné toutes nos fautes. Il a effacé le billet de la dette qui nous accablait en raison des prescriptions légales pesant sur nous : il l’a annulé en le clouant à la croix.

 

Acclamation

Alléluia. Alléluia! Vous avez reçu un Esprit qui fait de vous des fils ; c’est en lui que nous crions « Abba », Père. Alléluia! (Rm 8, 15bc)

 

Évangile : Luc 11, 1-13

Il arriva que Jésus, en un certain lieu, était en prière. Quand il eut terminé, un de ses disciples lui demanda : «Seigneur, apprends-nous à prier, comme Jean le Baptiste, lui aussi, l’a appris à ses disciples.» Il leur répondit: « Quand vous priez, dites: ‘Père, que ton nom soit sanctifié, que ton règne vienne. Donne-nous le pain dont nous avons besoin pour chaque jour Pardonne-nous nos péchés, car nous-mêmes, nous pardonnons aussi à tous ceux qui ont des torts envers nous. Et ne nous laisse pas entrer en tentation.» Jésus leur dit encore : « Imaginez que l’un de vous ait un ami et aille le trouver au milieu de la nuit pour lui demander : ‘Mon ami, prête-moi trois pains, car un de mes amis est arrivé de voyage chez moi, et je n’ai rien à lui offrir.’ Et si, de l’intérieur, l’autre lui répond : ‘Ne viens pas m’importuner! La porte est déjà fermée ; mes enfants et moi, nous sommes couchés. Je ne puis pas me lever pour te donner quelque chose’. Eh bien ! je vous le dis : même s’il ne se lève pas pour donner par amitié, il se lèvera à cause du sans-gêne de cet ami, et il lui donnera tout ce qu’il lui faut. Moi, je vous dis : Demandez, on vous donnera ; cherchez, vous trouverez; frappez, on vous ouvrira. En effet, quiconque demande reçoit ; qui cherche trouve ; à qui frappe, on ouvrira. Quel père parmi vous, quand son fils lui demande un poisson, lui donnera un serpent au lieu du poisson? Ou lui donnera un scorpion quand il demande un œuf ? Si donc vous, qui êtes mauvais, vous savez donner de bonnes choses à vos enfants, combien plus le Père du ciel donnera-t-il l’Esprit Saint à ceux qui le lui demandent!»

 

Prière sur les offrandes

Accepte, Seigneur, ces offrandes prélevées pour toi sur tes propres largesses. Que ces mystères très saints, où ta grâce opère avec puissance, sanctifient notre vie de tous les jours et nous conduisent aux joies éternelles. Par Jésus.

Méditation

Les textes liturgiques en ce 17ème dimanche du temps ordinaire nous révèlent que Dieu est bon et qu’il écoute quand nous crions vers lui. La première lecture nous présente Abraham intercédant pour les habitants de Sodome qui se sont éloignés du Seigneur par leurs conduites mauvaises. Toutefois le Seigneur accepte de ne pas détruire la ville en réponse à la supplication d’Abraham, à condition qu’il y trouve dix justes. La deuxième lecture nous révèle la bonté de Dieu qui n’a pas hésité à sacrifier son propre fils par amour pour nous. Et l’Evangile nous permet de méditer la prière que Jésus apprit à ses disciples et que nous récitons chaque jour. Ainsi comme le Seigneur, nous sommes invités à être bon et à vouloir le bien de notre prochain.

O God, protector of those who hope in you, without whom nothing has firm foundation, nothing is holy, bestow in abundance your mercy upon us and grant that, with you as our ruler and guide, we may use the good things that pass in such a way as to hold fast even now to those that ever endure. First reading : Genesis 18:20-32

The Lord said, ‘How great an outcry there is against Sodom and Gomorrah! How grievous is their sin! I propose to go down and see whether or not they have done all that is alleged in the outcry against them that has come up to me. I am determined to know.’ The men left there and went to Sodom while Abraham remained standing before the Lord. Approaching him he said, ‘Are you really going to destroy the just man with the sinner? Perhaps there are fifty just men in the town. Will you really overwhelm them, will you not spare the place for the fifty just men in it? Do not think of doing such a thing: to kill the just man with the sinner, treating just and sinner alike! Do not think of it! Will the judge of the whole earth not administer justice?’ the Lord replied, ‘If at Sodom I find fifty just men in the town, I will spare the whole place because of them.’ Abraham replied, ‘I am bold indeed to speak like this to my Lord, I who am dust and ashes. But perhaps the fifty just men lack five: will you destroy the whole city for five?’ ‘No,’ he replied ‘I will not destroy it if I find forty-five just men there.’ Again Abraham said to him, ‘Perhaps there will only be forty there.’ ‘I will not do it’ he replied ‘for the sake of the forty.’ Abraham said, ‘I trust my Lord will not be angry, but give me leave to speak: perhaps there will only be thirty there.’ ‘I will not do it’ he replied ‘if I find thirty there.’ He said, ‘I am bold indeed to speak like this, but perhaps there will only be twenty there.’ ‘I will not destroy it’ he replied ‘for the sake of the twenty.’ He said, ‘I trust my Lord will not be angry if I speak once more: perhaps there will only be ten.’ ‘I will not destroy it’ he replied ‘for the sake of the ten.’

 

Psalm 137(138):1-3,6-8

R/   On the day I called, you answered me, O Lord.

 

  1. I thank you, Lord, with all my heart: you have heard the words of my mouth. In the presence of the angels I will bless you. I will adore before your holy temple.

Second reading : Colossians 2:12-14

You have been buried with Christ, when you were baptised; and by baptism, too, you have been raised up with him through your belief in the power of God who raised him from the dead. You were dead, because you were sinners and had not been circumcised: he has brought you to life with him, he has forgiven us all our sins. He has overridden the Law, and cancelled every record of the debt that we had to pay; he has done away with it by nailing it to the cross.

Gospel : Luke 11:1-13

Once Jesus was in a certain place praying, and when he had finished one of his disciples said, ‘Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.’ He said to them, ‘Say this when you pray: ‘“Father, may your name be held holy, your kingdom come; give us each day our daily bread, and forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive each one who is in debt to us. And do not put us to the test.”’ He also said to them:  ‘Suppose one of you has a friend and goes to him in the middle of the night to say, “My friend, lend me three loaves, because a friend of mine on his travels has just arrived at my house and I have nothing to offer him”; and the man answers from inside the house, “Do not bother me. The door is bolted now, and my children and I are in bed; I cannot get up to give it you.” I tell you, if the man does not get up and give it him for friendship’s sake, persistence will be enough to make him get up and give his friend all he wants. ‘So I say to you: Ask, and it will be given to you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you. For the one who asks always receives; the one who searches always finds; the one who knocks will always have the door opened to him. What father among you would hand his son a stone when he asked for bread? Or hand him a snake instead of a fish? Or hand him a scorpion if he asked for an egg? If you then, who are evil, know how to give your children what is good, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!’

 

Prayer over the Offerings

Accept, O Lord, we pray, the offerings which we bring from the abundance of your gifts, that through the powerful working of your grace, these most sacred mysteries may sanctify our present way of life and lead us to eternal gladness. Through Christ our Lord.

 

Communion Antiphon : Ps 102: 2

Bless the Lord, O my soul, and never forget all his benefits.

 

Prayer after Communion

We have consumed, O Lord, this divine Sacrament, the perpetual memorial of the Passion of your Son; grant, we pray, that this gift, which he himself gave us with love beyond all telling, may profit us for salvation. Through Christ our Lord.

 

 

Meditation

Jesus’prayer life inspires His apostles to ask to be taught how to pray. As practicing Jews, they knew how to pray, but Jesus prayed in a different way, and this moved them. Jesus‘ praying style teaches that we start by praising God and thanking Him for the good He has been doing for us. In the second place, we can then make our petitions after we must have confessed to Him for our wrongs. We should know that whatever measurement we measure out to our brothers and sisters, it is the same measurement we receive from God. “Forgive us our sins as we also forgive all who wrong us.” If I want to be forgiven, let me forgive the other. If I want to have, let me give to others.

St. Bridget

of Sweden

(1303 – 1391)

 

She was married to a nobleman and had eight children. At the age of 30 she was summoned to the court of the King of Sweden, where she served as lady-in-waiting to the queen. She tried without much success to moderate the riotous and indecent life of the royal court.

 

Entrance Antiphon : Ps 53: 6, 8

See, I have God for my help. The Lord sustains my soul. I will sacrifice to you with willing heart, and praise your name, O Lord, for it is good.

 

Collect

Show favour, O Lord, to your servants, and mercifully increase the gifts of your grace, that, made fervent in hope, faith and charity, they may be ever watchful in keeping your commands. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

 

First reading : Jeremiah 7:1-11

The word that was addressed to Jeremiah by the Lord, ‘Go and stand at the gate of the Temple of the Lord and there proclaim this message. Say, “Listen to the word of the Lord, all you men of Judah who come in by these gates to worship the Lord. The Lord Sabaoth, the God of Israel, says this: Amend your behaviour and your actions and I will stay with you here in this place. Put no trust in delusive words like these: This is the sanctuary of the Lord, the sanctuary of the Lord, the sanctuary of the Lord! But if you do amend your behaviour and your actions, if you treat each other fairly, if you do not exploit the stranger, the orphan and the widow (if you do not shed innocent blood in this place), and if you do not follow alien gods, to your own ruin, then here in this place I will stay with you, in the land that long ago I gave to your fathers for ever. Yet here you are, trusting in delusive words, to no purpose! Steal, would you, murder, commit adultery, perjure yourselves, burn incense to Baal, follow alien gods that you do not know? – and then come presenting yourselves in this Temple that bears my name, saying: Now we are safe – safe to go on committing all these abominations! Do you take this Temple that bears my name for a robbers’ den? I, at any rate, am not blind – it is the Lord who speaks.”’

Gospel : Matthew 13:24-30

Jesus put another parable before the crowds, ‘The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a man who sowed good seed in his field. While everybody was asleep his enemy came, sowed darnel all among the wheat, and made off. When the new wheat sprouted and ripened, the darnel appeared as well. The owner’s servants went to him and said, “Sir, was it not good seed that you sowed in your field? If so, where does the darnel come from?” “Some enemy has done this” he answered. And the servants said, “Do you want us to go and weed it out?” But he said, “No, because when you weed out the darnel you might pull up the wheat with it. Let them both grow till the harvest; and at harvest time I shall say to the reapers: First collect the darnel and tie it in bundles to be burnt, then gather the wheat into my barn.”’

 

Prayer over the Offerings

O God, who in the one perfect sacrifice, brought to completion varied offerings of the law, accept, we pray, this sacrifice from your faithful servants and make it holy, as you blessed the gifts of Abel, so that what each has offered to the honour of your majesty may benefit the salvation of all. Through Christ our Lord.

The Lord, the gracious, the merciful, has made a memorial of his wonders; he gives food to those who fear him.

 

Prayer after Communion

Graciously be present to your people, we pray, O Lord, and lead those you have imbued with heavenly mysteries to pass from former ways to newness of life. Through Christ our Lord.

 

Meditation

Our world is full of evil and perpetrators of evil. Many times we question why there is much evil in the world. The existence of evil has made some to start questioning the existence of God. From the Parable of the Weeds, Jesus gives an answer to all those who are concerned about the presence of evil in the world. Good and bad are mixed in the world and they must be found in people and institutions. When the end time will come, a good selection will be made and the bad ones will be burnt in an everlasting fire. The respect God gives to His creation is that He knows they are all weak human beings open to temptation and so he does not rush to condemn us His creatures. He gives us time to discover and choose what is good. The patience of God is an opportunity for us to repent. May we find the kingdom prepared for us at the end of time. Amen.
