St. Barnabé,

apôtre

Le titre d’Apôtre ne signifie pas que Joseph, surnommé Barnabé (c’est-à-dire ‘’fils d’encouragement’’), ait été l’un des Douze, mais qu’il joua un rôle capital dans la diffusion de l’Evangile. En entrant dans la communauté chrétienne, cet homme de foi a mis tous ses biens à la disposition des Apôtres.

 

Antienne d’ouverture : Ac 11, 24

Heureux, saint Barnabé, qui fut digne d’être compté parmi les apôtres : c’était un homme de bien, rempli de l’Esprit Saint et de foi.

 

Prière  d’ouverture

Dieu qui as dit de mettre à part saint Barnabé, cet homme plein de foi et de l’Esprit Saint, pour qu’il porte aux païens le message du salut ; fais que l’Évangile du Christ, dont saint Barnabé fut l’Apôtre courageux, soit encore annoncé fidèlement en paroles et en actes. Par Jésus Christ.

 

1ère lecture : Ac 11, 21b-26 ; 13, 1-3

En ces jours-là, à Antioche, un grand nombre de gens devinrent croyants et se tournèrent vers le Seigneur. La nouvelle parvint aux oreilles de l’Église de Jérusalem, et l’on envoya Barnabé jusqu’à Antioche. À son arrivée, voyant la grâce de Dieu à l’œuvre, il fut dans la joie. Il les exhortait tous à rester d’un cœur ferme attachés au Seigneur. C’était en effet un homme de bien, rempli d’Esprit Saint et de foi. Une foule considérable s’attacha au Seigneur. Barnabé partit alors à Tarse chercher Saul. L’ayant trouvé, il l’amena à Antioche. Pendant toute une année, ils participèrent aux assemblées de l’Église, ils instruisirent une foule considérable. Et c’est à Antioche que, pour la première fois, les disciples reçurent le nom de « chrétiens ». Or il y avait dans l’Église qui était à Antioche des prophètes et des hommes chargés d’enseigner: Barnabé, Syméon appelé Le Noir, Lucius de Cyrène, Manahène, compagnon d’enfance d’Hérode le Tétrarque, et Saul. Un jour qu’ils célébraient le culte du Seigneur et qu’ils jeûnaient, l’Esprit Saint leur dit : « Mettez à part pour moi Barnabé et Saul en vue de l’œuvre à laquelle je les ai appelés. » Alors, après avoir jeûné et prié, et leur avoir imposé les mains, ils les laissèrent partir. – Parole du Seigneur.

 

Psaume 15,1-2.5.7-10

R/   Le seigneur a révélé sa justice aux nations (97, 2b)

 

  1. Garde-moi, mon Dieu : j’ai fait de toi mon refuge. J’ai dit au Seigneur : « Tu es mon Dieu ! Je n’ai pas d’autre bonheur que toi. »
  2. Seigneur, mon partage et ma coupe : de toi dépend mon sort. Je bénis le Seigneur qui me conseille : même la nuit mon coeur m’avertit.
  3. Je garde le Seigneur devant moi sans relâche ; il est à ma droite : je suis inébranlable.
  4. Mon coeur exulte, mon âme est en fête, ma chair elle-même repose en confiance : tu ne peux m’abandonner à la mort ni laisser ton ami voir la corruption.

Évangile : Mt 5, 33-37

Vous avez encore appris qu’il a été dit aux anciens : Tu ne manqueras pas à tes serments, mais tu t’acquitteras de tes serments envers le Seigneur. Eh bien ! moi, je vous dis de ne pas jurer du tout, ni par le ciel, car c’est le trône de Dieu, ni par la terre, car elle est son marchepied, ni par Jérusalem, car elle est la Ville du grand Roi. Et ne jure pas non plus sur ta tête, parce que tu ne peux pas rendre un seul de tes cheveux blanc ou noir. Que votre parole soit “oui”, si c’est “oui”, “non”, si c’est “non”. Ce qui est en plus vient du Mauvais.

 

Prière  sur  les  offrandes

Par ta bénédiction, Seigneur, sanctifie nos offrandes: qu’elles nous obtiennent de ta grâce cet ardent amour qui portait saint Barnabé à transmettre aux nations païennes la lumière de l’Évangile. Par Jésus.

 

Antienne de la communion : Jn 15, 15

« Je ne vous appelle plus serviteurs, dit le Seigneur, car le serviteur ignore ce que veut faire son maître. Je vous appelle mes amis, car tout ce que j’ai appris de mon Père, je vous l’ai fait connaître. »

 

Prière  après  la  communion

Après avoir reçu de toi, Seigneur, le gage de la vie éternelle, nous te supplions humblement : fais que nous saisissions un jour en plénitude le mystère que nous célébrons dans ces rites en mémoire de l’Apôtre saint Barnabé. Par Jésus.

 

 

Méditation

« Que votre parole soit oui si c’est oui et non si c’est non » ! Voilà une invitation à être des disciples invétérés de la vérité qui n’est qu’une révélation de Dieu à notre esprit. Il nous incombe de la transmettre dans toute sa pureté, sans mélanges ni masques ou modifications. Aujourd’hui la vérité est de plus en plus fabriquée et sert nos intérêts, ce qui nous donne l’attitude du  « oui-non », ou du oui quand c’est non et du non quand c’est oui. Suis-je disciple fidèle de la vérité ? Suis-je un commerçant de la vérité pour mes propres intérêts ? Que Dieu nous vienne en aide dans chacune de nos prises de parole en ce jour.

St. Barnabas

the Apostle

He was born in Cyprus. He accompanied Paul on his first missionary journey and later went to Cyprus with his cousin John Mark (Mark the evangelist) to preach the gospel there. He was probably martyred at Salamis in Cyprus, some time before the year 61.

 

Entrance Antiphon : Cf. Acts 11: 24

Blessed is this holy man, who was worthy to be numbered among the Apostles, for he was a good man, filled with the Holy Spirit and with faith.

Collect

O God, who decreed that Saint Barnabas, a man filled with faith and the Holy Spirit, should be set apart to convert the nations, grant that the Gospel of Christ, which he strenuously preached, may be faithfully proclaimed by word and by deed. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

First reading : Acts 11:21-26,13:1-3

A great number believed and were converted to the Lord. The Church in Jerusalem heard about this and they sent Barnabas to Antioch. There he could see for himself that God had given grace, and this pleased him, and he urged them all to remain faithful to the Lord with heartfelt devotion; for he was a good man, filled with the Holy Spirit and with faith. And a large number of people were won over to the Lord. Barnabas then left for Tarsus to look for Saul, and when he found him he brought him to Antioch. As things turned out they were to live together in that Church a whole year, instructing a large number of people. It was at Antioch that the disciples were first called ‘Christians.’ In the Church at Antioch the following were prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen, who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. One day while they were offering worship to the Lord and keeping a fast, the Holy Spirit said, ‘I want Barnabas and Saul set apart for the work to which I have called them.’ So it was that after fasting and prayer they laid their hands on them and sent them off.

I     Sing a new song to the Lord for he has worked wonders. His right hand and his holy arm have brought salvation.

  1. The Lord has made known his salvation; has shown his justice to the nations. He has remembered his truth and love for the house of Israel.

Prayer over the Offerings

Sanctify with your blessing, we pray, O Lord, the offerings presented here, so that by your grace they may set us on fire with the flame of your love, by which Saint Barnabas brought the light of the Gospel to the nations. Through Christ our Lord.

 

Communion Antiphon : Cf. Jn 15: 15

I no longer call you slaves, because a slave does not know what his master is doing. But I have called you friends, because I have told you everything I have heard from my Father.

 

Prayer after Communion

As we receive the pledge of eternal life, we humbly implore you, Lord, that what we celebrate in sacramental signs on the Memorial of the blessed Apostle Barnabas we may one day behold unveiled. Through Christ our Lord.

Meditation

All you need say is “Yes” if you mean yes, “No” if you mean no. This is a recommendation to be devoted followers of the truth, which is not our own creation but God’s revelation to our spirit. It is our responsibility to transmit it in all its purity without adulterations or multiple interpretations that may obscure or alter it. Today the truth is manufactured by our interests, and this makes us adopt the attitude of “yes-no” or yes when it is no and no when it is yes. Am I a faithful disciple of truth or a marketer of truth for interest? May God help us in every word we speak this day.

He was the bishop of Paris. He was consecrated in 650 and built the first major hospital in the city, dedicating it to St. Christopher. It’s today called the l’Hôtel-Dieu.

The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; whom should I dread? When those who do evil draw near, they stumble and fall.

O God, from whom all good things come, grant that we, who call on you in our need, may at your prompting discern what is right, and by your guidance do it. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

 

First reading : 1 Kings 19:9,11-16

Meditation

Conversion is an unavoidable pre-requisite to enter the kingdom of heaven. The conversion we are talking about here is rooted in the Word that God addresses to our hearts and that goes beyond our traditions and personal convictions and appetites. We must break away from our desires and follow and practice only what Christ teaches and expects of us. “You have learnt how it was said…. But I say this to you! “This is an imperative call that awaits a radical response. We have to sacrifice pleasures, benefits, or the comfort of a conscience that is not guilty of trying to do good. We must cut all these off and cast them away, for it is better to go to heaven without them than to keep them and go to hell.

Il fut Évêque de Paris et fondateur de l’Hôtel-Dieu. Selon la tradition, après avoir été fonctionnaire à la chancellerie du roi Clovis II vers 640, il vendit ses meubles et même des vases sacrés en surnombre, pour secourir les pauvres lors d’une grande famine.

Le Seigneur est ma lumière et mon salut, qui pourrais-je craindre? Le Seigneur est le rempart de ma vie, devant qui tremblerais-je ?

Seigneur, source de tout bien, réponds sans te lasser à notre appel: inspire-nous ce qui est juste, aide-nous à l’accomplir. Par Jésus.

 

1ère lecture : 1R 19, 9a.11-16

En ces jours-là, lorsque le prophète Élie fut arrivé à l’Horeb, la montagne de Dieu, il entra dans une caverne et y passa la nuit. Et voici que la parole du Seigneur lui fut adressée. Les fils d’Israël ont abandonné ton Alliance, renversé tes autels, et tué tes prophètes par l’épée ; moi, je suis le seul à être resté et ils cherchent à prendre ma vie. » Le Seigneur lui dit : « Repars vers Damas, par le chemin du désert. Arrivé là, tu consacreras par l’onction Hazaël comme roi de Syrie ; puis tu consacreras Jéhu, fils de Namsi, comme roi d’Israël ; et tu consacreras Élisée, fils de Shafath, d’Abel-Mehola, comme prophète pour te succéder. »

Eh bien ! moi, je vous dis : Tout homme qui regarde une femme avec convoitise a déjà commis l’adultère avec elle dans son cœur. Si ton œil droit entraîne ta chute, arrache-le et jette-le loin de toi, car mieux vaut pour toi perdre un de tes membres que d’avoir ton corps tout entier jeté dans la géhenne. Et si ta main droite entraîne ta chute, coupe-la et jette-la loin de toi, car mieux vaut pour toi perdre un de tes membres que d’avoir ton corps tout entier qui s’en aille dans la géhenne. Il a été dit également : Si quelqu’un renvoie sa femme, qu’il lui donne un acte de répudiation. Eh bien ! moi, je vous dis: Tout homme qui renvoie sa femme, sauf en cas d’union illégitime, la pousse à l’adultère ; et si quelqu’un épouse une femme renvoyée, il est adultère. »

Seigneur notre Dieu, nous voulons te servir ; regarde notre offrande : qu’elle soit agréable à tes yeux, et nous obtienne un accroissement de charité. Par Jésus.

Dieu est amour : celui qui demeure dans l’amour demeure en Dieu, et Dieu demeure en lui.

 

Prière  après  la  communion

Dieu qui veux notre guérison, agis en nous par cette Eucharistie : libère-nous  de  nos  penchants  mauvais, oriente notre vie vers le bien. Par Jésus.

 

 

Méditation

Il est urgent de se convertir pour entrer dans le royaume des cieux. La conversion dont il est question ici s’enracine dans la Parole que Dieu adresse à notre cœur et qui dépasse nos traditions et convictions personnelles, nos appétits mondains avec lesquels nous devons rompre pour ne suivre et ne pratiquer que ce que le Christ enseigne et attend de nous. « Vous avez appris qu’il a été dit  mais moi je vous dis… » Voilà une interpellation qui attend une réponse radicale au prix des sacrifices, des plaisirs, des avantages et conforts d’une conscience non coupable. Nous devons nous débarrasser de tout cela et le jeter loin de nous car ça ne nous entraînera que dans la géhenne.

St. Ephrem,

diacre et docteur de l’Eglise

Théologien et poète, Ephrem (vers 306-373) refusa le sacerdoce par humilité et fut diacre à Nisibe, puis à Edesse. Il composa en syriaque des commentaires de la Bible, des homélies et des hymnes qui l’ont fait surnommer ‘’la cithare du Saint-Esprit’’. Il a exprimé dans ses poèmes une tendre dévotion à la Vierge Marie.

 

Antienne  d’ouverture : Ps 26, 1

Le Seigneur est ma lumière et mon salut, qui pourrais-je craindre? Le Seigneur est le rempart de ma vie, devant qui tremblerais-je ?

 

Prière  d’ouverture

Seigneur, source de tout bien, réponds sans te lasser à notre appel: inspire-nous ce qui est juste, aide-nous à l’accomplir. Par Jésus.

 

1ère lecture : 1R 18, 41-46

En ces jours-là, le prophète Élie dit au roi Acab : « Monte, tu peux maintenant manger et boire, car j’entends le grondement de la pluie.»  Acab monta pour aller manger et boire. Élie, de son côté, monta sur le sommet du Carmel, il se courba vers la terre et mit son visage entre ses genoux. Il dit à son  serviteur : « Monte, et regarde du côté de la mer. » Le serviteur monta, regarda et dit : « Il n’y a rien. » Sept fois de suite, Élie lui dit : « Retourne. » La septième fois, le serviteur annonça: « Voilà un nuage qui monte de la mer, gros comme le poing. » Alors Élie dit au serviteur : « Va dire au roi Acab :  “Attelle ton char et descends de la montagne, avant d’être arrêté par la pluie.” » Peu à peu, le ciel s’obscurcit de nuages, poussés par le vent, et il tomba une grosse pluie. Acab monta sur son char et partit pour la ville de Yizréel.     La main du Seigneur s’empara du prophète; Élie retroussa son  vêtement et courut en avant d’Acab jusqu’à l’entrée de la ville de Yizréel.

 

Psaume : 64 (65), 10abcd, 10e-11, 12-13

R/ Il est beau de te louer, Dieu, dans Sion.

 

  1. Tu visites la terre et tu l’abreuves, tu la combles de richesses ; les ruisseaux de Dieu regorgent ‘eau: tu prépares les moissons.
  2. Ainsi, tu prépares la terre, tu arroses les sillons ; tu aplanis le sol, tu le détrempes sous les pluies, tu bénis les semailles.
  3. Tu couronnes une année de bienfaits ; sur ton passage, ruisselle l’abondance. Au désert, les pâturages ruissellent, les collines débordent d’allégresse.

 

Acclamation

Alléluia. Alléluia! Je vous donne un commandement nouveau, dit le Seigneur : « Aimez-vous les uns les autres, comme je vous ai aimés. » Alléluia! (cf. Jn 13, 34)

 

Évangile : Mt 5, 20-26

En ce temps-là, Jésus disait à ses disciples : « Je vous le dis : Si votre justice ne surpasse pas celle des scribes et des pharisiens, vous n’entrerez pas dans le royaume des Cieux. Vous avez appris qu’il a été dit aux anciens : Tu ne commettras pas de meurtre, et si quelqu’un commet un meurtre, il devra passer en jugement.  Eh bien ! moi, je vous dis : Tout homme qui se met en colère contre son frère devra passer en jugement. Si quelqu’un insulte son frère, il devra passer devant le tribunal. Si quelqu’un le traite de fou, il sera passible de la géhenne de feu. Donc, lorsque tu vas présenter ton offrande à l’autel, si, là, tu te souviens que ton frère a quelque chose contre toi, laisse ton offrande, là, devant l’autel, va d’abord te réconcilier avec ton frère, et ensuite viens présenter ton offrande. Mets-toi vite d’accord  avec ton adversaire pendant que tu es en chemin avec lui, pour éviter que ton adversaire ne te livre au juge, le juge au garde, et qu’on ne te jette en prison. Amen, je te le dis: tu n’en sortiras pas avant d’avoir payé jusqu’au dernier sou. »

Jésus présente le cœur de l’homme comme étant le lieu de la manifestation de la justice véritable. C’est pourquoi le regard de Dieu s’y pose de façon prioritaire. Il ne nous suffit pas d’être des hommes qui font du bien, nous devons aussi avoir un cœur bon, juste et plein d’amour. Notre cœur est invisible parce qu’il est la demeure de Dieu en nous, le Dieu invisible mais présent et agissant. Que le Seigneur rende nos pensées et nos intentions concordantes à nos actes par le don de son Esprit qui sanctifie et justifie toute chose.

St. EphraIm the Deacon

(306 – 373)

 

He was a poet and a theologian. He is famous not only for the beauty of expression of his homilies but also for his hymns, which have spread far beyond his native Syriac church and are in use in East and West alike.

But I say this to you: anyone who is angry with his brother will answer for it before the court; if a man calls his brother “Fool” he will answer for it before the Sanhedrin; and if a man calls him “Renegade” he will answer for it in hell fire. So then, if you are bringing your offering to the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your offering there before the altar, go and be reconciled with your brother first, and then come back and present your offering. Come to terms with your opponent in good time while you are still on the way to the court with him, or he may hand you over to the judge and the judge to the officer, and you will be thrown into prison. Meditation

Jesus presents the human heart as the place where true justice is manifested. For this reason, God’s gaze is focused on it . It is not enough for us to be men who let it be seen that they do good; we must take the further step of cultivating   have a good heart, just and full of love. Our heart is invisible because it is the dwelling place of God in us, God who is invisible but present and active. May the Lord purify make our thoughts and intentions through the gift of his Spirit, who sanctifies and justifies everything.

1ère lecture : 1 R 18, 20-39

En ces jours-là, le roi Acab convoqua tout Israël et réunit les prophètes de Baal sur le mont Carmel. Élie se présenta devant la foule et dit : « Combien de temps allez-vous danser pour l’un et pour  l’autre ? Si c’est le Seigneur qui est Dieu, suivez le Seigneur ; si c’est Baal, suivez Baal.» Et la foule ne répondit mot. Élie continua: « Moi, je suis le seul qui reste des prophètes du Seigneur, tandis que les prophètes de Baal sont quatre cent cinquante. Amenez-nous deux jeunes taureaux ; qu’ils en choisissent un, qu’ils le dépècent et le placent sur le bûcher, mais qu’ils n’y mettent pas le feu. Moi, je préparerai l’autre taureau, je le placerai sur le bûcher, mais je n’y mettrai pas le feu. Vous invoquerez le nom de votre dieu, et moi, j’invoquerai le nom du Seigneur: le dieu qui répondra par le feu, c’est lui qui est Dieu. » La foule répondit : « C’est d’accord. » Élie dit alors aux prophètes de Baal : Choisissez votre taureau et commencez, car vous êtes les plus nombreux. Invoquez le nom de votre dieu, mais ne mettez pas le feu. » Ils prirent le taureau et le préparèrent, et ils invoquèrent le nom de Baal depuis le matin jusqu’au milieu du jour, en disant : « ô Baal, réponds-nous ! » Mais il n’y eut ni voix ni  réponse ; et ils dansaient devant l’autel qu’ils avaient dressé. Au milieu du jour, Élie se moqua d’eux en disant : « Criez plus fort, puisque c’est un dieu : il a des soucis ou des affaires, ou bien il est en voyage ; il dort peut-être, mais il va se réveiller ! » Ils crièrent donc plus fort et, selon leur coutume, ils se tailladèrent jusqu’au sang avec des épées et des lances. Dans l’après-midi, ils se livrèrent à des transes  prophétiques jusqu’à l’heure du sacrifice du soir, mais il n’y eut ni voix, ni réponse, ni le moindre signe. Alors Élie dit à la foule : « Approchez. » Et toute la foule s’approcha de lui. Il releva l’autel du Seigneur, qui  avait été démoli. Il prit douze pierres, selon le nombre des tribus des fils de Jacob à qui le Seigneur avait dit : « Ton nom sera Israël. » Avec ces pierres il érigea un autel au Seigneur. Il creusa autour de l’autel une rigole d’une capacité d’environ trente litres. Il disposa le bois, dépeça le taureau et le plaça sur le bûcher. Puis il dit : « Emplissez d’eau quatre cruches, et versez-les sur la victime et sur le bois. » Et l’on fit ainsi. Il dit : « Une deuxième fois ! » Et l’on recommença. Il dit : « Une troisième fois ! » Et l’on recommença encore. L’eau ruissela autour de l’autel, et la rigole elle-même fut remplie d’eau. À l’heure du sacrifice du soir, Élie le prophète s’avança et dit : « Seigneur, Dieu d’Abraham, d’Isaac et d’Israël, on saura aujourd’hui que tu es Dieu en Israël, que je suis ton serviteur, et que j’ai accompli toutes ces choses sur ton ordre. Réponds-moi, Seigneur, réponds-moi, pour que tout ce peuple sache que c’est toi, Seigneur, qui es Dieu, et qui as retourné leur cœur ! » Alors le feu du Seigneur tomba, il dévora la victime et le bois, les pierres et la poussière, et l’eau qui était dans la rigole. Tout le peuple  en fut témoin; les gens tombèrent face contre terre et dirent : « C’est le Seigneur qui est Dieu ! C’est le Seigneur qui est Dieu ! »

Amen, je vous le dis : Avant que le ciel et la terre disparaissent, pas un seul iota, pas un seul trait ne disparaîtra de la Loi jusqu’à ce que tout se réalise. Donc, celui qui rejettera un seul de ces plus petits commandements, et qui enseignera aux hommes à faire ainsi, sera déclaré le plus petit dans le royaume des Cieux. Mais celui qui les observera et les enseignera, celui-là sera déclaré grand dans le royaume des Cieux. »

Méditation

Les Ecritures dans leur totalité s’accomplissent dans la personne du Christ. C’est lui qu’elles ont annoncé depuis le commencement. Ainsi l’enseignement des prophètes et la loi de Moise ne sont pas en contradiction avec le Christ qui en est le parfait accomplissement. L’observance de la loi est donc chemin qui mène au Royaume des cieux, qui n’est rien d’autre que Jésus Christ lui-même. Celui qui observe les commandements de Dieu et enseigne aux hommes à faire autant est le plus grand dans ce Royaume. Si nous avons oublié les 10 commandements, prenons la peine de les revisiter en ce jour et à en parler dans nos familles.

Blessed James Berthieu

(1838 – 1896)

 

Born in France, he was ordained a Jesuit priest in 1864. In 1875 he left for Madagascar where he spent the rest of his life. On the night of 8 June 1896, while he was praying, he was shot dead and his body thrown in the river Mananara.

You must call on the name of your god, and I shall call on the name of mine; the god who answers with fire, is God indeed.’ The people all answered, ‘Agreed!’ Elijah then said to the prophets of Baal, ‘Choose one bull and begin, for there are more of you. Call on the name of your god but light no fire.’ They took the bull and prepared it, and from morning to midday they called on the name of Baal. ‘O Baal, answer us!’ they cried, but there was no voice, no answer, as they performed their hobbling dance round the altar they had made. Midday came, and Elijah mocked them. ‘Call louder,’ he said ‘for he is a god: he is preoccupied or he is busy, or he has gone on a journey; perhaps he is asleep and will wake up.’ So they shouted louder and gashed themselves, as their custom was, with swords and spears until the blood flowed down them. Midday passed, and they ranted on until the time the offering is presented; but there was no voice, no answer, no attention given to them. Then Elijah said to all the people, ‘Come closer to me’, and all the people came closer to him. He repaired the altar of the Lord which had been broken down. Elijah took twelve stones, corresponding to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob to whom the word of the Lord had come, ‘Israel shall be your name’, and built an altar in the name of the Lord. Round the altar he dug a trench of a size to hold two measures of seed. He then arranged the wood, dismembered the bull, and laid it on the wood. Then he said, ‘Fill four jars with water and pour it on the holocaust and on the wood’; this they did. He said, ‘Do it a second time’; they did it a second time. He said, ‘Do it a third time’; they did it a third time. The water flowed round the altar and the trench itself was full of water. Meditation

The Scriptures in their entirety are fulfilled in the person of Christ. He is the one whom they announced from the beginning. Thus, the teaching of the prophets and the law of Moses are not in contradiction with Christ, who is their perfect fulfilment. The observance of the law is therefore the way to the kingdom of heaven. He who keeps the commandments of God and teaches men to do the same is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. If we have forgotten the 10 commandments, let us take the trouble to revisit them on this day and to talk about them in our family.

He was active in the late fifth and early sixth centuries. He spent most of his life in the Dromore area of County Down. He was persuaded by Saint Mac Nissi to settle at Dromore in around 514, where he became the first bishop of the See of Dromore.

For thus the Lord speaks, the God of Israel: “Jar of meal shall not be spent, jug of oil shall not be emptied, before the day when the Lord sends rain on the face of the earth.”’ The woman went and did as Elijah told her and they ate the food, she, himself and her son. The jar of meal was not spent nor the jug of oil emptied, just as the Lord had foretold through Elijah.

  1. When I call, answer me, O God of justice; from anguish you released me, have mercy and hear me! O men, how long will your hearts be closed, will you love what is futile and seek what is false?

Meditation

“Your light must shine in the sight of men, so that, seeing your good works, they may give the praise to your Father in heaven.” The essence of being a Christian is to do good to people, to be love in the midst of the world. It is in this that we become the salt of the earth and the light of the world, not by telling people about our faith, but by letting our actions, our witness of life, tell those around us about Jesus Christ. May the Lord give us docility to the inspirations of his Spirit so that our life may correspond to our discipleship and tell God to a world that is thirsty and hungry for him.

Il en construisit un deuxième à Auberre pour sa femme sainte Péronelle, et sa fille, la bienheureuse Poncie. Sainte Péronelle en fut la première abbesse et la bienheureuse Poncie lui succéda.

Alors la parole du Seigneur lui fut adressée : « Lève-toi, va à Sarepta, dans le pays de Sidon; tu y habiteras ; il y a là une veuve que j’ai chargée de te nourrir. » Le prophète Élie partit pour Sarepta, et il parvint à l’entrée de la ville. Une veuve ramassait du bois ; il l’appela et lui dit : « Veux-tu me puiser, avec ta cruche, un peu d’eau pour que je boive ? » Elle alla en puiser. Il lui dit encore : « Apporte-moi aussi un morceau de pain. »  Elle répondit: « Je le jure par la vie du Seigneur ton Dieu : je n’ai pas de pain. J’ai seulement, dans une jarre, une poignée de farine, et un peu d’huile dans un vase. Je ramasse deux morceaux de bois, je rentre préparer pour moi et pour mon fils ce qui nous reste. Nous le mangerons, et puis nous mourrons. » Élie lui dit alors : « N’aie pas peur, va, fais ce que tu as dit. Mais d’abord cuis-moi une petite galette et apporte-la moi, ensuite tu en feras pour toi et ton fils. Car ainsi parle le Seigneur, Dieu d’Israël : Jarre de farine point ne s’épuisera, vase d’huile point ne se videra, jusqu’au jour où le Seigneur donnera la pluie pour arroser la terre. » La femme alla faire ce qu’Élie lui avait demandé, et pendant longtemps, le prophète, elle-même et son fils eurent à manger. Et la jarre de farine ne s’épuisa pas, et le vase d’huile ne se vida pas, ainsi que le Seigneur l’avait annoncé par l’intermédiaire d’Élie.

R/   Sur nous, Seigneur, que s’illumine ton visage !

 

  1. Quand je crie, réponds-moi, Dieu, ma justice ! Toi qui me libères dans la détresse, pitié pour moi, écoute ma prière !

Et l’on  n’allume pas une lampe pour la mettre sous le boisseau ; on la met sur le lampadaire, et elle brille pour tous ceux qui sont dans la maison. De même, que votre lumière brille devant les hommes : alors, voyant ce que vous faites de bien, ils rendront gloire à votre Père qui est aux cieux. »

Dieu est amour : celui qui demeure dans l’amour demeure en Dieu, et Dieu demeure en lui.

Dieu qui veux notre guérison, agis en nous par cette Eucharistie : libère-nous  de  nos  penchants  mauvais, oriente notre vie vers le bien. Par Jésus

 

 

Méditation

« Que votre lumière brille devant les hommes, alors en voyant ce que vous faites de bien ils rendront gloire à Dieu ». La nature du chrétien est de faire le bien aux hommes, être amour dans le monde, au milieu des Hommes. C’est en cela que nous devenons le sel de la terre et la lumière du monde ; non pas en parlant de notre foi aux hommes, mais en laissant nos actes et notre témoignage de vie parler de Jésus Christ à ceux qui nous entourent. Que le Seigneur nous donne d’être dociles aux inspirations de son Esprit, afin que notre vie corresponde à notre être de disciple, pour dire Dieu au monde qui a soif et faim de lui.
