Pauvre et torturée par l’asthme, Bernadette (1844-1879) a quatorze ans quand, dans la grotte de Massabielle, à Lourdes, lui apparaît dix-huit fois celle qui se nommera : ‘’l’Immaculée Conception’’. ‘’ Si la sainte Vierge en avait trouvé une plus ignorante que moi, c’est elle qu’elle aurait choisi’’, dira Bernadette, devenue Sœur Marie Bernard en 1866 chez les Sœurs de la Charité de Nevers. Ce mot dit bien l’humilité de celle qui accepta inlassablement souffrances et humiliations pour le salut des pécheurs.

1ère lecture : Jc 2, 14-24.26
Mes frères, si quelqu’un prétend avoir la foi, sans la mettre en œuvre, à quoi cela sert- il ? Sa foi peut- elle le sauver ? Supposons qu’un frère ou une sœur n’ait pas de quoi s’habiller, ni de quoi manger tous les jours ; si l’un de vous leur dit : « Allez en paix ! Mettez- vous au chaud, et mangez à votre faim ! » sans leur donner le nécessaire pour vivre, à quoi cela sert- il ? Ainsi donc, la foi, si elle n’est pas mise en œuvre, est bel et bien morte. En revanche, on va dire : « Toi, tu as la foi ; moi, j’ai les œuvres. Montre-m oi donc ta foi sans les œuvres ; moi, c’est par mes œuvres que je te montrerai la foi. Toi, tu crois qu’il y a un seul Dieu. Fort bien ! Mais les démons, eux aussi, le croient et ils tremblent. Homme superficiel, veux- tu reconnaître que la foi sans les œuvres ne sert à rien ? N’est- ce pas par ses œuvres qu’Abraham notre père est devenu juste, lorsqu’il a présenté son fils Isaac sur l’autel du sacrifice ? Tu vois bien que la foi agissait avec ses œuvres et, par les œuvres, la foi devint parfaite. Ainsi fut accomplie la parole de l’Écriture : Abraham eut foi en Dieu ; aussi, il lui fut accordé d’être juste, et il reçut le nom d’ami de Dieu. » Vous voyez bien : l’homme devient juste par les œuvres, et non seulement par la foi. Ainsi, comme le corps privé de souffle est mort, de même la foi sans les œuvres est morte.

R/ Heureux qui aime entièrement la volonté du Seigneur !
1. Heureux qui craint le Seigneur, qui aime entièrement sa volonté ! Sa lignée sera puissante sur la terre ; la race des justes est bénie.
2. Les richesses affluent dans sa maison : à jamais se maintiendra sa justice. Lumière des cœurs droits, il s’est levé dans les ténèbres, homme de justice, de tendresse et de pitié.
3. L’homme de bien a pitié, il partage ; il mène ses affaires avec droiture. Cet homme jamais ne tombera ; toujours on fera mémoire du juste.

En ce temps-là, appelant la foule avec ses disciples, Jésus leur dit : « Si quelqu’un veut marcher à ma suite, qu’il renonce à lui-même, qu’il prenne sa croix et qu’il me suive. Car celui qui veut sauver sa vie la perdra ; mais celui qui perdra sa vie à cause de moi et de l’Évangile la sauvera. Quel avantage, en effet, un homme a-t-il à gagner le monde entier si c’est au prix de sa vie ? Que pourrait-il donner en échange de sa vie ? Celui qui a honte de moi et de mes paroles dans cette génération adultère et pécheresse, le Fils de l’homme aussi aura honte de lui, quand il viendra dans la gloire de son Père avec les saints anges. » Et il leur disait : « Amen, je vous le dis : parmi ceux qui sont ici, certains ne connaîtront pas la mort avant d’avoir vu le règne de Dieu venu avec puissance. »

Méditation
L’évangile de ce jour met l’accent sur la suite de Jésus. Il nous donne la condition pour être son disciple : renoncer à soi-même et porter sa croix. Le disciple doit suivre Jésus sur le chemin de la croix ; il doit passer par la souffrance. Ce chemin, c’est celui qui le conduira à la vie avec Dieu. Dans le contexte actuel marqué par la culture de l’éphémère, du provisoire et de la facilité, cette Bonne Nouvelle est une véritable interpellation qui nous est lancée en tant que chrétiens. Oui, le chemin de la vie chrétienne est jonché de multiples croix et chacun de nous a la sienne. Mais la porter pour suivre Jésus n’est pas facile ; ce n’est pas non plus impossible. Ainsi, nous avons besoin de son soutien pour le faire (Mt 11, 28-30).

St. Simon
In St. Matthew’s Gospel, we read of St. Simon who is described as one of our Lord’s brethren or kinsmen. He is one of those brethren of Christ who are mentioned in the Acts of the Apostles as having received the Holy Spirit on Pentecost.

First reading : James 2:14-24,26
Take the case, my brothers, of someone who has never done a single good act but claims that he has faith. Will that faith save him? If one of the brothers or one of the sisters is in need of clothes and has not enough food to live on, and one of you says to them, ‘I wish you well; keep yourself warm and eat plenty’, without giving them these bare necessities of life, then what good is that? Faith is like that: if good works do not go with it, it is quite dead. This is the way to talk to people of that kind: ‘You say you have faith and I have good deeds; I will prove to you that I have faith by showing you my good deeds – now you prove to me that you have faith without any good deeds to show. You believe in the one God – that is creditable enough, but the demons have the same belief, and they tremble with fear. Do realise, you senseless man, that faith without good deeds is useless. You surely know that Abraham our father was justified by his deed, because he offered his son Isaac on the altar? There you see it: faith and deeds were working together; his faith became perfect by what he did. This is what scripture really means when it says: Abraham put his faith in God, and this was counted as making him justified; and that is why he was called ‘the friend of God.’ You see now that it is by doing something good, and not only by believing, that a man is justified. A body dies when it is separated from the spirit, and in the same way faith is dead if it is separated from good deeds.

1. Happy the man who fears the Lord, who takes delight in all his commands. His sons will be powerful on earth; the children of the upright are blessed.

Meditation
A good example of faith with good works is seen the actions of Christians who shun earthly values and reach out for the sake of the gospel. Examples abound of saints and contemporary missionaries and lay faithful who have ignored the normal cravings of the world to seek the face of God, and of those who have used their wealth as though it were nothing, all for the good of the gospel. Our age is one in which to profess your faith is a shameful thing to do, for it will leave you jobless, friendless, and forlorn. For this reason, many are ready to not be like Jesus so that they may live. They are lost if they don’t turn to God.

Les sept saints fondateurs des Servites de Marie
Vers 1233, sept marchands florentins renoncent à leur commerce et à leurs gains pour mener une autre recherche dans la solitude du Mont Senario. Ils vivent en communauté dans la pénitence et méditent la passion de Jésus et les douleurs de sa mère. Ainsi prend naissance l’ordre des « servites » ou « serviteurs de Marie », voué à la prédication et à l’enseignement.

Mes frères, dans votre foi en Jésus Christ, notre Seigneur de gloire, n’ayez aucune partialité envers les personnes. Imaginons que, dans votre assemblée, arrivent en même temps un homme au vêtement rutilant, portant une bague en or, et un pauvre au vêtement sale. Vous tournez vos regards vers celui qui porte le vêtement rutilant et vous lui dites : « Assieds- toi ici, en bonne place » ; et vous dites au pauvre : « Toi, reste là debout », ou bien : « Assieds- toi au bas de mon marchepied. » Cela, n’est- ce pas faire des différences entre vous, et juger selon de faux critères ? Écoutez donc, mes frères bien-a imés ! Dieu, lui, n’a-t -il pas choisi ceux qui sont pauvres aux yeux du monde pour en faire des riches dans la foi, et des héritiers du Royaume promis par lui à ceux qui l’auront aimé ? Mais vous, vous avez privé le pauvre de sa dignité. Or n’est- ce pas les riches qui vous oppriment, et vous traînent devant les tribunaux ? Ce sont eux qui blasphèment le beau nom du Seigneur qui a été invoqué sur vous. Certes, si vous accomplissez la loi du Royaume selon l’Écriture : Tu aimeras ton prochain comme toi- même, vous faites bien. Mais si vous montrez de la partialité envers les personnes, vous commettez un péché, et cette loi vous convainc de transgression.

R/ Un pauvre crie ; le Seigneur entend.
1. Je bénirai le Seigneur en tout temps, sa louange sans cesse à mes lèvres. Je me glorifierai dans le Seigneur : que les pauvres m’entendent et soient en fête !

Chemin faisant, il interrogeait ses disciples: « Au dire des gens, qui suis-je?» Ils lui répondirent : « Jean le Baptiste ; pour d’autres, Élie ; pour d’autres, un des prophètes. » Et lui les interrogeait : « Et vous, que dites-vous ? Pour vous, qui suis-je ? » Pierre, prenant la parole, lui dit : « Tu es le Christ. » Alors, il leur défendit vivement de parler de lui à personne. Il commença à leur enseigner qu’il fallait que le Fils de l’homme souffre beaucoup, qu’il soit rejeté par les anciens, les grands prêtres et les scribes, qu’il soit tué, et que, trois jours après, il ressuscite. Jésus disait cette parole ouvertement. Pierre, le prenant à part, se mit à lui faire de vifs reproches. Mais Jésus se retourna et, voyant ses disciples, il interpella vivement Pierre : « Passe derrière moi, Satan ! Tes pensées ne sont pas celles de Dieu, mais celles des hommes. »

Méditation
L’extrait de l’évangile nous donne de méditer sur les questions de Jésus à ses disciples : « Pour les gens, qui suis-je ? Et vous, que dites-vous ? Pour vous, qui suis-je ? » et sur la réponse que Pierre, plein de foi, donne à Jésus : « Tu es le Messie ». Jésus pose ces questions pendant qu’il est en route pour Jérusalem, lieu de sa Passion. Il veut réellement se rendre compte de la foi de ses disciples en Lui, de la reconnaissance de son identité par ses amis (Jn 15, 14-15). Découvrir, comme Pierre, que Jésus est le Messie, c’est accepter le chemin de la Passion. Chrétiens que nous sommes, nous devons savoir que la Passion fait partie de notre vie. Acceptons-la !

The Seven Holy Founders
of the Servite Order
In the thirteenth century seven Florentines founded the Servite order. Their feast is celebrated today because one of the seven founders, Saint Alexius Falconieri, died on 17 February 1310.

Now suppose a man comes into your synagogue, beautifully dressed and with a gold ring on, and at the same time a poor man comes in, in shabby clothes, and you take notice of the well-dressed man, and say, ‘Come this way to the best seats’; then you tell the poor man, ‘Stand over there’ or ‘You can sit on the floor by my foot-rest.’ Can’t you see that you have used two different standards in your mind, and turned yourselves into judges, and corrupt judges at that? Listen, my dear brothers: it was those who are poor according to the world that God chose, to be rich in faith and to be the heirs to the kingdom which he promised to those who love him. In spite of this, you have no respect for anybody who is poor. Isn’t it always the rich who are against you? Isn’t it always their doing when you are dragged before the court? Aren’t they the ones who insult the honourable name to which you have been dedicated? Well, the right thing to do is to keep the supreme law of scripture: you must love your neighbour as yourself; but as soon as you make distinctions between classes of people, you are committing sin, and under condemnation for breaking the Law.

Meditation
We come to the full knowledge of who Christ is only by the help of the Father (see John 6: 44; 6: 65). Man can only connect to his divine nature and realm by divine assistance. We cannot do it by ourselves. The best we can ever do is to dance around speculations of what we think God is. We do this because the ways of men are different: we see things only with respect to their immediate results, and not for the greater good. This is why Peter could not understand how God was to be killed. We must always seek the help of the Father through prayers to understand his plans for us and bring us to his Son.

St. Daniel
Daniel and his four companions (Elias, Isaias, Jeremy and Samuel) were Egyptians who visited Christians condemned to work in the mines of Cilicia during Maximus persecution, to comfort them. Apprehended, they were all tortured and then beheaded.

But you must do what the word tells you, and not just listen to it and deceive yourselves. To listen to the word and not obey is like looking at your own features in a mirror and then, after a quick look, going off and immediately forgetting what you looked like. But the man who looks steadily at the perfect law of freedom and makes that his habit – not listening and then forgetting, but actively putting it into practice – will be happy in all that he does. Nobody must imagine that he is religious while he still goes on deceiving himself and not keeping control over his tongue; anyone who does this has the wrong idea of religion. Pure, unspoilt religion, in the eyes of God our Father is this: coming to the help of orphans and widows when they need it, and keeping oneself uncontaminated by the world.

Meditation
In this process of healing we learn these things: certain healings take time; miracles should never be understood as magic. The presence of Christ in our lives leads us to the complete truth, and for this to happen, we must be led away from the crowd, (he took the blind man by his hand and led him out of the village) and we have to stay away from the places and people that lead us further into darkness (‘Do not even go into the village’).

1ère lecture : Jc 1, 19-27
Sachez-le, mes frères bien- aimés : chacun doit être prompt à écouter, lent à parler, lent à la colère, car la colère de l’homme ne réalise pas ce qui est juste selon Dieu. C’est pourquoi, ayant rejeté tout ce qui est sordide et tout débordement de méchanceté, accueillez dans la douceur la Parole semée en vous ; c’est elle qui peut sauver vos âmes. Mettez la Parole en pratique, ne vous contentez pas de l’écouter : ce serait vous faire illusion. Car si quelqu’un écoute la Parole sans la mettre en pratique, il est comparable à un homme qui observe dans un miroir son visage tel qu’il est, et qui, aussitôt après, s’en va en oubliant comment il était. Au contraire, celui qui se penche sur la loi parfaite, celle de la liberté, et qui s’y tient, lui qui l’écoute non pour l’oublier, mais pour la mettre en pratique dans ses actes, celui-là sera heureux d’agir ainsi. Si l’on pense être quelqu’un de religieux sans mettre un frein à sa langue, on se trompe soi- même, une telle religion est sans valeur. Devant Dieu notre Père, un comportement religieux pur et sans souillure, c’est de visiter les orphelins et les veuves dans leur détresse, et de se garder sans tache au milieu du monde.

R/ Seigneur, qui habitera ta sainte montagne ?
1. Celui qui se conduit parfaitement, qui agit avec justice et dit la vérité selon son cœur. Il met un frein à sa langue.
2. Il ne fait pas de tort à son frère et n’outrage pas son prochain. À ses yeux, le réprouvé est méprisable mais il honore les fidèles du Seigneur.
3. Il ne reprend pas sa parole. Il prête son argent sans intérêt, n’accepte rien qui nuise à l’innocent. Qui fait ainsi demeure inébranlable.

En ce temps-là, Jésus et ses disciples arrivèrent à Bethsaïde. Des gens lui amènent un aveugle et le supplient de le toucher. Jésus prit l’aveugle par la main et le conduisit hors du village. Il lui mit de la salive sur les yeux et lui imposa les mains. Il lui demandait: « Aperçois-tu quelque chose ? » Levant les yeux, l’homme disait : « J’aperçois les gens : ils ressemblent à des arbres que je vois marcher. » Puis Jésus, de nouveau, imposa les mains sur les yeux de l’homme ; celui-ci se mit à voir normalement, il se trouva guéri, et il distinguait tout avec netteté. Jésus le renvoya dans sa maison en disant: « Ne rentre même pas dans le village. »

Méditation Dans son Exhortation apostolique post-synodale Verbum Domini sur la Parole de Dieu dans la vie et dans la mission de l’Eglise, le pape Benoît XVI affirme que « La Parole de Dieu demeure pour toujours » (Verbum Domini, n°1). Cette Parole éternelle que Dieu a prononcée de façon humaine, cet Evangile qui nous a été annoncé est entré dans le temps (Is 40, 8 ; I P 1, 25 ; Jn 1, 14). Et saint Jacques nous appelle à être prêt à l’écouter et le mettre en pratique. Mettre la Parole de Dieu en pratique, c’est devenir sensible à la situation des pauvres ou des nécessiteux (orphelins, veuves) et agir en leur faveur. C’est cela vivre la dimension sociale de l’Evangile. Puisse cette Parole de Dieu nous interpeller et nous pousser à agir en faveur des pauvres. Amen

Meditation
Here again is an example of Christians who do not know the power of the God they serve. This is so much the case with Christians today: we have misplaced priorities and are dull to the word of God. Many people go through many difficulties and worry as though they have no God or do not understand his ways. Others are not familiar with the Word. It is possible for us to constantly attend mass and yet not know how to pray; to hear the readings at mass, yet not know that we read the bible at mass. We must reflect on the deeds of the Lord in our lives to see that he is with us and can do all things.

Jésuite, ce confesseur de sainte Marguerite-Marie Alacoque à Paray-le-Monial est convaincu de l’authenticité des apparitions et des confidences dont elle est l’objet, et il en rédige le récit. Après un séjour en Grande-Bretagne au cours duquel, jeté en prison lors de la vague de persécutions anticatholiques de 1678, il perd la santé, il revient à Paray-le-Monial d’où il est rappelé à Dieu.

Méditation
Bien-aimés dans le Seigneur, à la lecture de l’évangile de ce jour, nous voyons que les disciples de Jésus n’ont pas encore découvert le mystère de sa personne : vrai Homme et vrai Dieu qui, non seulement est attentif aux cris et aux appels de son peuple, mais aussi qui opère des miracles merveilleux notamment celui de multiplier les pains pour nourrir les affamés. Incrédules et sceptiques, les disciples doivent devenir des témoins de la foi en Jésus. Soyons alors animés de cette foi qui exige de nous de supporter patiemment l’épreuve avec persévérance afin que nous obtenions la récompense promise à ceux qui aiment Dieu : la vie éternelle.

He was born in Thessalonica. With his brother Cyril he went to Moravia to preach the faith. They translated liturgical texts and invented the Glagolithic and the Cyrillic alphabet. He died in 885 and is one of the patron saints of Europe.

Meditation
The problem here was not with the asking for a sign, but with their blunt refusal to acknowledge the signs they had seen before. Just before now, Jesus had liberated the possesed child of a woman, and restored the sight of the blind man, and yet here they stood, asking for a sign. We too can be like the Pharisees, drenched in the blessings of God and yet denying it to his very face out of ego or an ungrateful heart. Our judgement is usually not from us when we act like this. The Lord makes others tell us to our faces how ungrateful we are.

Mémoire
Natifs de Thessalonique, Méthode, un ancien fonctionnaire impérial, et son jeune frère Constantin, le futur Cyrille, s’étaient faits moines avant d’être envoyés par Byzance auprès des peuples slaves. Pour ceux-ci, ils traduisirent en slavon la Bible et les livres liturgiques, et inventèrent à cet effet l’alphabet dit ‘’cyrillique’’, encore en usage aujourd’hui. Ils se heurtèrent à l’opposition de missionnaires de rite latin qui les dénoncèrent au pape à cause de leur emploi de la langue vivante.

Fêtons les amis de Dieu, saint Cyrille et saint Méthode : la gloire des deux frères fut de proclamer la vérité reçue du Seigneur.

1ère lecture : Jc 1, 1-11
Jacques, serviteur de Dieu et du Seigneur Jésus Christ, aux douze tribus de la Diaspora, salut! Considérez comme une joie extrême, mes frères, de buter sur toute sorte d’épreuves. Vous le savez, une telle vérification de votre foi produit l’endurance, et l’endurance doit s’accompagner d’une action parfaite, pour que vous soyez parfaits et intègres, sans que rien ne vous manque. Mais si l’un de vous manque de sagesse, qu’il la demande à Dieu, lui qui donne à tous sans réserve et sans faire de reproches : elle lui sera donnée. Mais qu’il demande avec foi, sans la moindre hésitation, car celui qui hésite ressemble aux vagues de la mer que le vent agite et soulève. Qu’il ne s’imagine pas, cet homme-là, qu’il recevra du Seigneur quoi que ce soit, s’il est partagé, instable dans toute sa conduite. Que le frère d’humble condition tire sa fierté d’être élevé, et le riche, d’être humilié, car il passera comme l’herbe en fleur. En effet, le soleil s’est levé, ainsi que le vent brûlant, il a desséché l’herbe, sa fleur est tombée, la beauté de son aspect a disparu; de même, le riche se flétrira dans toutes ses entreprises.

R/ Que vienne à moi ta tendresse, Seigneur, et je vivrai.
1. Avant d’avoir souffert, je m’égarais; maintenant, j’observe tes ordres. Toi, tu es bon, tu fais du bien : apprends-moi tes commandements.
2. C’est pour mon bien que j’ai souffert, ainsi, ai-je appris tes commandements. Mon bonheur, c’est la loi de ta bouche, plus qu’un monceau d’or ou d’argent.

Les pharisiens survinrent et se mirent à discuter avec Jésus ; pour le mettre à l’épreuve, ils cherchaient à obtenir de lui un signe venant du ciel. Jésus soupira au plus profond de lui-même et dit : « Pourquoi cette génération cherche-t-elle un signe ? Amen, je vous le déclare : aucun signe ne sera donné à cette génération. » Puis il les quitta, remonta en barque, et il partit vers l’autre rive.

Méditation
Notre mission est parsemée d’épreuves et d’obstacles de toutes sortes. Jésus, notre Maître et notre Modèle, a bel et bien, vécu cela. Il est passé par des épreuves, des obstacles ou des pièges que ses adversaires lui tendaient (Mc 8, 11-13). Mais à chaque écueil, il s’en sortait vainqueur parce qu’il était guidé par la sagesse et la volonté de Dieu. Nous aussi, chrétiens, des alter Christi, nous subissons et subirons les mêmes épreuves ou écueils. Soyons attachés au Seigneur et nous nous en sortirons vainqueurs. Dieu ne nous épargne pas de ces épreuves, lesquelles vérifient la qualité de notre foi. Que Lui-même nous soutienne afin que ces dernières ne nous éloignent pas de lui, mais renforcent notre lien vital avec Lui. Amen !
