St. Felix
of Nola
St. Felix of Nola (d. ca. 250) was a Christian presbyter at Nola near Naples in Italy. He sold off his possessions in order to give to the poor. He was believed to have died a martyr’s death.

Attend to the pleas of your people with heavenly care, O Lord, we pray, that they may see what must be done and gain strength to do what they have seen. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
First reading : 1 Samuel 8:4-7,10-22
All the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah. ‘Look,’ they said to him ‘you are old, and your sons do not follow your ways. So give us a king to rule over us, like the other nations.’ It displeased Samuel that they should say, ‘Let us have a king to rule us’, so he prayed to the Lord. But the Lord said to Samuel, ‘Obey the voice of the people in all that they say to you, for it is not you they have rejected; they have rejected me from ruling over them.’ All that the Lord had said Samuel repeated to the people who were asking him for a king. He said, ‘These will be the rights of the king who is to reign over you. He will take your sons and assign them to his chariotry and cavalry, and they will run in front of his chariot. He will use them as leaders of a thousand and leaders of fifty; he will make them plough his ploughland and harvest his harvest and make his weapons of war and the gear for his chariots. We want a king, so that we in our turn can be like the other nations; our king shall rule us and be our leader and fight our battles.’ Samuel listened to all that the people had to say and repeated it in the ears of the Lord. The Lord then said to Samuel, ‘Obey their voice and give them a king.’

When Jesus returned to Capernaum, word went round that he was back; and so many people collected that there was no room left, even in front of the door. He was preaching the word to them when some people came bringing him a paralytic carried by four men, but as the crowd made it impossible to get the man to him, they stripped the roof over the place where Jesus was; and when they had made an opening, they lowered the stretcher on which the paralytic lay. Seeing their faith, Jesus said to the paralytic, ‘My child, your sins are forgiven.’ Now some scribes were sitting there, and they thought to themselves, ‘How can this man talk like that? He is blaspheming. Who can forgive sins but God?’ Jesus, inwardly aware that this was what they were thinking, said to them, ‘Why do you have these thoughts in your hearts? Which of these is easier: to say to the paralytic, “Your sins are forgiven” or to say, “Get up, pick up your stretcher and walk”? But to prove to you that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins,’ – he turned to the paralytic – ‘I order you: get up, pick up your stretcher, and go off home.’ And the man got up, picked up his stretcher at once and walked out in front of everyone, so that they were all astounded and praised God saying, ‘We have never seen anything like this.’

Meditation
Jesus was attracting many people and everyone wanted to be in His presence. Convinced of His powers even to heal a paralysed man, the men who carried him ensured they got him to Jesus at all cost. And seeing their faith Jesus took a different route, “My child, your sins are forgiven. Jesus begins the healing from where it is needed the most; the interior. Internal ailments are rarely perceptible. It is more difficult to cure those than the external sicknesses. By healing the man internally and externally, Jesus teaches us the importance of care for the whole person to whom his redemptive work is directed. While seeking physical cure, we need not forget the most essential; internal healing.

Évêque de Poitiers, Hilaire (315-367) fut l’ardent défenseur de la foi en la divinité du Christ, niée par les ariens ; il souffrit l’exil en raison de sa prise de position contre ces hérétiques. En Orient où cet évêque gaulois avait été exilé par l’empereur Constance, il ne cessa d’écrire à la gloire du Christ, qu’il n’avait pourtant découvert qu’à l’âge adulte.

1ère lecture : 1 S 4, 1-11
En ces jours-là, Israël sortit pour aller combattre les Philistins. Israël campa près d’Ébène-Ézèr, tandis que les Philistins étaient campés à Apheq. Les Philistins se déployèrent contre Israël, et le combat s’engagea. Dans cette bataille rangée en rase campagne, Israël fut battu par les Philistins, qui tuèrent nviron quatre mille hommes, et le peuple revint au camp. Les anciens d’Israël dirent alors: «Pourquoi le Seigneur nous a-t-il fait battre aujourd’hui par les Philistins? Allons prendre à Silo l’arche de l’Alliance du Seigneur; qu’elle vienne au milieu de nous, et qu’elle nous sauve de la main de nos ennemis.» Le peuple envoya des gens à Silo; ils en rapportèrent l’arche de l’Alliance du Seigneur des armées qui siège sur les Kéroubim. Les deux fils du prêtre Éli, Hofni et Pinhas, étaient là auprès de l’arche de Dieu. Quand l’Arche arriva au camp, tout Israël poussa une grande ovation qui fit résonner la terre. Les Philistins entendirent le bruit et dirent: « Que signifie cette grande ovation dans le camp des Hébreux ? » Ils comprirent alors que l’arche du Seigneur était arrivée dans le camp. Alors ils eurent peur, car ils se disaient: «Dieu est arrivé au camp des Hébreux.» Puis ils dirent: «Malheur à nous! Les choses ont bien changé depuis hier. Malheur à nous ! Qui nous délivrera de la main de ces dieux puissants ? Ce sont eux qui ont frappé les Égyptiens de toutes sortes de calamités dans le désert. Soyez forts, Philistins, soyez des hommes courageux, pour ne pas être asservis aux Hébreux comme ils vous ont été asservis: soyez courageux et combattez!» Les Philistins livrèrent bataille, Israël fut battu et chacun s’enfuit à ses tentes. Ce fut un très grand désastre: en Israël trente mille soldats tombèrent. L’arche de Dieu fut prise, et les deux fils d’Éli, Hofni et Pinhas, moururent.

R/ Sauve-nous, Seigneur, par ton amour.
1. Maintenant, tu nous humilies, tu nous rejettes, tu ne sors plus avec nos armées. Tu nous fais plier devant l’adversaire, et nos ennemis emportent le butin.
2. Tu nous exposes aux sarcasmes des voisins, aux rires, aux moqueries de l’entourage. Tu fais de nous la fable des nations; les étrangers haussent les épaules.

Évangile : Mc 1, 40-45
En ce temps-là, un lépreux vint auprès de Jésus; il le supplia et, tombant à ses genoux, lui dit: «Si tu le veux, tu peux me purifier.» Saisi de compassion, Jésus étendit la main, le toucha et lui dit: « Je le veux, sois purifié.» À l’instant même, la lèpre le quitta et il fut purifié. Avec fermeté, Jésus le renvoya aussitôt en lui disant: « Attention, ne dis rien à personne, mais va te montrer au prêtre, et donne pour ta purification ce que Moïse a prescrit dans la Loi: cela sera pour les gens un témoignage.» Une fois parti, cet homme se mit à proclamer et à répandre la nouvelle, de sorte que Jésus ne pouvait plus entrer ouvertement dans une ville, mais restait à l’écart, dans des endroits déserts. De partout cependant on venait à lui.

Méditation
Jésus est saisi de pitié devant un lépreux venu à sa rencontre. Nous mesurons bien l’ampleur de cet événement ! Cet homme contagieux franchit les barrières sanitaires pour être sauvé. Et Jésus se laisse approcher ; pas le moindre geste d’exclusion de sa part. Bien plus, dans sa miséricorde il se laisse remuer par la détresse. Il fait sortir le lépreux du cercle infernal de la maladie. Celui-ci ne peut donc pas contenir sa joie et répand la bonne nouvelle aux alentours de Capharnaüm. Jésus en perd sa tranquillité car de partout, on accourt à lui. Ainsi, par ce fait implicitement, Jésus est déjà reconnu comme Sauveur. Avant l’heure de la croix, on pressent sa puissance à transfigurer la misère humaine. Ne jouons plus à cache-cache avec nos lèpres. Avançons-nous vers Jésus avec confiance, il est venu non pour les bien portants mais pour les malades.

He was born at the beginning of the fourth century. He was elected Bishop of Poitiers in 350. His works are full of wisdom and learning, directed to the strengthening of the Catholic faith and the right interpretation of Scripture. He died in 367.

A leper came to Jesus and pleaded on his knees: ‘If you want to’ he said ‘you can cure me.’ Feeling sorry for him, Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him. ‘Of course I want to!’ he said. ‘Be cured!’ And the leprosy left him at once and he was cured. Jesus immediately sent him away and sternly ordered him, ‘Mind you say nothing to anyone, but go and show yourself to the priest, and make the offering for your healing prescribed by Moses as evidence of your recovery.’ The man went away, but then started talking about it freely and telling the story everywhere, so that Jesus could no longer go openly into any town, but had to stay outside in places where nobody lived. Even so, people from all around would come to him.

Meditation
In the process of restoring the leper’s health, Jesus breaches ritual laws by touching him. He was not only cured of his physical ailment, but was also restored of his dignity. Jesus urged him to follow the due process that has both religious and social implications. The compassion of God knows no bounds; He is always willing to lift us up. Those who encounter Him share their testimonies and more people troop to Him. When we submit to Him in faith as the leper did, he would act in our favour. Meanwhile, He invites us be part of His ministry of restoring health and dignity to others. We can help someone get medical care or buy his/her medications; We can be the voice of those society rejects; we can become agents of God’s compassion in our neighbourhood.

Le Seigneur appela Samuel, qui répondit: «Me voici!» Il courut vers le prêtre Éli, et il dit: «Tu m’as appelé, me voici.» Éli répondit: «Je n’ai pas appelé. Retourne te coucher.» L’enfant alla se coucher. De nouveau, le Seigneur appela Samuel. Et Samuel se leva. Il alla auprès d’Éli, et il dit: «Tu m’as appelé, me voici.» Éli répondit: «Je n’ai pas appelé, mon fils. Retourne te coucher.» Samuel ne connaissait pas encore le Seigneur, et la parole du Seigneur ne lui avait pas encore été révélée. De nouveau, le Seigneur appela Samuel. Celui-ci se leva. Il alla auprès d’Éli, et il dit: «Tu m’as appelé, me voici.» Alors Éli comprit que c’était le Seigneur qui appelait l’enfant, et il lui dit: «Va te recoucher, et s’il t’appelle, tu diras: “Parle, Seigneur, ton serviteur écoute.» Samuel alla se recoucher à sa place habituelle. Le Seigneur vint, il se tenait là et il appela comme les autres fois: « Samuel ! Samuel!» Et Samuel répondit: «Parle, ton serviteur écoute.» Samuel grandit. Le Seigneur était avec lui, et il ne laissa aucune de ses paroles sans effet. Tout Israël, depuis Dane jusqu’à Bershéba, reconnut que Samuel était vraiment un prophète du Seigneur.

En ce temps-là, aussitôt sortis de la synagogue de Capharnaüm, Jésus et ses disciples allèrent, avec Jacques et Jean, dans la maison de Simon et d’André. Or, la belle-mère de Simon était au lit, elle avait de la fièvre. Aussitôt, on parla à Jésus de la malade. Jésus s’approcha, la saisit par la main et la fit lever. La fièvre la quitta, et elle les servait. Le soir venu, après le coucher du soleil, on lui amenait tous ceux qui étaient atteints d’un mal ou possédés par des démons. La ville entière se pressait à la porte. Il guérit beaucoup de gens atteints de toutes sortes de maladies, et il expulsa beaucoup de démons; il empêchait les démons de parler, parce qu’ils savaient, eux, qui il était. Le lendemain, Jésus se leva, bien avant l’aube. Il sortit et se rendit dans un endroit désert, et là il priait. Simon et ceux qui étaient avec lui partirent à sa recherche. Ils le trouvent et lui disent: «Tout le monde te cherche.» Jésus leur dit: «Allons ailleurs, dans les villages voisins, afin que là aussi je proclame l’Évangile; car c’est pour cela que je suis sorti.» Et il parcourut toute la Galilée, proclamant l’Évangile dans leurs synagogues, et expulsant les démons.

Méditation Le soir venu, Jésus guérit beaucoup de malades : la belle-mère de Pierre et tous ceux qu’on lui amène, malades du corps, infirmes, malades de l’esprit. C’est tout l’homme qui intéresse Jésus. Au matin Jésus se lève et sort comme un matin de pâque ! Il prie son Père qui est là dans le secret : « Père, ceux que tu m’as donnés, je veux que là où je suis, eux aussi soient avec moi » (Jn17, 24). La relation de Jésus avec son Père est une source qui donne la vie. Nous sommes invités à boire à cette source, comme Jésus.Entrons avec le Christ dans cette proclamation de la Bonne Nouvelle. Portons les fardeaux des uns et des autres, et prions le Père de toute miséricorde. Il veut la vie pour tous ses enfants.

Born in Troyes in France, she went to Canada at the age of 33, where she taught and devoted herself to works of corporal mercy and founded the Congregation of Notre-Dame de Montréal. She died on 12 January 1700.

On leaving the synagogue, Jesus went with James and John straight to the house of Simon and Andrew. Now Simon’s mother-in-law had gone to bed with fever, and they told him about her straightaway. He went to her, took her by the hand and helped her up. And the fever left her and she began to wait on them. That evening, after sunset, they brought to him all who were sick and those who were possessed by devils. The whole town came crowding round the door, and he cured many who were suffering from diseases of one kind or another; he also cast out many devils, but he would not allow them to speak, because they knew who he was.
In the morning, long before dawn, he got up and left the house, and went off to a lonely place and prayed there. Simon and his companions set out in search of him, and when they found him they said, ‘Everybody is looking for you.’ He answered, ‘Let us go elsewhere, to the neighbouring country towns, so that I can preach there too, because that is why I came.’ And he went all through Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and casting out devils.

Meditation
The Evangelist’s words on how the news of the fever of Peter’s Mother-in-law’s reached Jesus is profound; and they told Him about her straightaway. As simple as it sounds, it supposes their deep faith in Jesus. There was no time to waste. At times we only resort to Jesus when all other options have failed. Meanwhile, in spite of the demands of His ministry, He still finds time for prayer. He invites us to accept life as a gift from God, ministry as a call to service and to prioritise communion with the Father.

Meditation
Jesus hits the ground running as He enters the synagogue and begins to teach with authority. The unclean spirit quickly recognises the inauguration of a new order, “the reign of Christ” and it cries out. But Jesus quickly rebukes it and, in accordance with His manifesto, (cf. Luke 4:18-19), liberates the man held captive. We are fortunate to have been chosen and called by Christ to be part of His reign. He is the door into this kingdom. And so, by conforming our lives to His teachings, renouncing every work of the unclean spirits, we shall have a place in Him.

St. Paulin d’Aquilée
Il passa pour être l’un des hommes les plus savants de son époque, écrivant aussi bien en prose qu’en vers. Elcana s’unit à Anne sa femme, et le Seigneur se souvint d’elle. Anne conçut et, le temps venu, elle enfanta un fils; elle lui donna le nom de Samuel (c’est-à-dire : Dieu exauce) car, disait-elle, «Je l’ai demandé au Seigneur.»

Jésus et ses disciples entrèrent à Capharnaüm. Aussitôt, le jour du sabbat, il se rendit à la synagogue, et là, il enseignait. On était frappé par son enseignement, car il enseignait en homme qui a autorité, et non pas comme les scribes. Or, il y avait dans leur synagogue un homme tourmenté par un esprit impur, qui se mit à crier: «Que nous veux-tu, Jésus de Nazareth? Es-tu venu pour nous perdre? Je sais qui tu es: tu es le Saint de Dieu.» Jésus l’interpella vivement: « Tais-toi ! Sors de cet homme.» L’esprit impur le fit entrer en convulsions, puis, poussant un grand cri, sortit de lui. Ils furent tous frappés de stupeur et se demandaient entre eux: «Qu’est-ce que cela veut dire? Voilà un enseignement nouveau, donné avec autorité! Il commande même aux esprits impurs, et ils lui obéissent.» Sa renommée se répandit aussitôt partout, dans toute la région de la Galilée.

Méditation
La nouveauté de l’enseignement de Jésus réside en deux points : il enseigne avec autorité et libère l’être humain de toute entrave du mal. Jésus annonce la nouveauté de Dieu : un Dieu qui s’intéresse à l’homme et le veut libre. Personne n’est esclave de son passé, de son péché, ni des forces du mal. De même que saint Irénée de Lyon disait que la gloire de Dieu c’est l’homme debout, de même l’on comprend que la gloire de Dieu c’est l’homme libre. Par sa personne et par son enseignement, Jésus offre à toute personne de vivre pleinement. Nous sommes créés par Dieu, non pas pour vivre comme des photocopies, selon le bon vouloir de Satan, mais pour vivre pleinement en assumant nos vies sous le regard du Christ.

Sylvestre gouverna l’Eglise de Rome au lendemain de la paix constantinienne, de 314 à 335. Il consacra la basilique du Latran, et ce fut sous son pontificat que le 1er concile de Nicée (325) condamna l’hérésie arienne.

Évangile : Jn 1, 1-18
Au commencement était le Verbe, la Parole de Dieu, et le Verbe était auprès de Dieu, et le Verbe était Dieu. Il était au commencement auprès de Dieu. Par lui, tout s’est fait, et rien de ce qui s’est fait ne s’est fait sans lui. En lui était la vie, et la vie était la lumière des hommes ; la lumière brille dans les ténèbres, et les ténèbres ne l’ont pas arrêtée. Il y eut un homme envoyé par Dieu. Son nom était Jean. Il était venu comme témoin, pour rendre témoignage à la Lumière, afin que tous croient par lui. Cet homme n’était pas la Lumière, mais il était là pour lui rendre témoignage. Le Verbe était la vraie Lumière, qui éclaire tout homme en venant dans le monde. Il était dans le monde, lui par qui le monde s’était fait, mais le monde ne l’a pas reconnu. Il est venu chez les siens, et les siens ne l’ont pas reçu. Mais tous ceux qui l’ont reçu, ceux qui croient en son nom, il leur a donné de pouvoir devenir enfants de Dieu. Ils ne sont pas nés de la chair et du sang, ni d’une volonté charnelle, ni d’une volonté d’homme : ils sont nés de Dieu. Et le Verbe s’est fait chair, il a habité parmi nous, et nous avons vu sa gloire, la gloire qu’il tient de son Père comme Fils unique, plein de grâce et de vérité. Jean Baptiste lui rend témoignage en proclamant : « Voici celui dont j’ai dit : Lui qui vient derrière moi, il a pris place devant moi, car avant moi il était. » Tous nous avons eu part à sa plénitude, nous avons reçu grâce après grâce : après la Loi communiquée par Moïse, la grâce et la vérité sont venues par Jésus Christ. Dieu, personne ne l’a jamais vu ; le Fils unique, qui est dans le sein du Père, c’est lui qui a conduit à le connaître.
Prière sur les offrandes
Dieu qui donnes la grâce de te servir avec droiture et de chercher la paix, fais que cette offrande puisse te glorifier, et que notre participation à l’eucharistie renforce les liens de notre unité. Par Jésus.

Méditation
Dieu crée l’homme à son image et à sa ressemblance. Pour certains érudits de piété et de sagesse, Dieu sculptait le visage d’Adam en regardant celui du « Premier-né de toute créature, en qui ont été créées toutes choses », son Fils. Oui, par amour Dieu sort de lui-même en son Fils, son Verbe, pour se faire proche de l’homme, de l’homme blessé. Il devient semblable à nous pour que nous devenions semblables à lui par la grâce de son Esprit. Tous, nous dit saint Jean, nous avons eu part à sa plénitude. Oui, nous tous, dès ici-bas, nous pouvons communier à la vie même de Dieu, à sa sainteté, à sa paix, à sa sagesse, à sa beauté… Tous ceux qui accueillent l’Esprit du Fils sont fils de Dieu, ses bien-aimés. Et comment les reconnaître ? Ils ont la sagesse d’aimer l’unique Lumière, l’unique Parole.

Gospel : John 1:1-18

He came as a witness, as a witness to speak for the light, so that everyone might believe through him. He was not the light, only a witness to speak for the light. Meditation
Jesus Christ, the Word of God, came into the world and his people did not accept him. But some people did accept him, and to them he gave the power to become children of God. There are thus two categories of people; those who accept Jesus and those who reject him. Those who accept him become children of God like him, and bear his name. They are called Christians. Those who reject him are those St. John calls the antichrists. Whoever rejects Jesus Christ and refuses to believe in him is an antichrist. Jesus has come into the world and we have to choose between accepting him or rejecting him. He is knocking at the door of our hearts, and we have to decide whether to let him in or to turn him away. This choice is an individual choice; no one can make it for you. Will you accept Jesus or reject him?

Évêque de Cannes, il était mort quelques années plus tôt quand des gens vinrent piller la cathédrale pour emporter les reliques. Ils rapportèrent de leur expédition un coffre de reliques, le trône épiscopal, des vases sacrés et le corps de l’évêque Roger. L’année suivante, ils durent restituer les objets du vol, sauf le corps de l’évêque que son successeur ne considérait pas comme précieux. Les fidèles par contre voulurent rendre ce corps précieux en canonisant Roger et en composant un office.

2. Apportez votre offrande, entrez dans ses parvis, adorez le Seigneur, éblouissant de sainteté : tremblez devant lui, terre entière.
3. Allez dire aux nations : « Le Seigneur est roi ! » Le monde, inébranlable, tient bon. Il gouverne les peuples avec droiture.

Évangile : Lc 2, 36-40
En ce temps-là, quand les parents de Jésus vinrent le présenter au Temple, il y avait aussi une femme prophète, Anne, fille de Phanuel, de la tribu d’Aser. Elle était très avancée en âge ; après sept ans de mariage, demeurée veuve, elle était arrivée à l’âge de 84 ans. Elle ne s’éloignait pas du Temple, servant Dieu jour et nuit dans le jeûne et la prière. Survenant à cette heure même, elle proclamait les louanges de Dieu et parlait de l’enfant à tous ceux qui attendaient la délivrance de Jérusalem. Lorsqu’ils eurent achevé tout ce que prescrivait la loi du Seigneur, ils retournèrent en Galilée, dans leur ville de Nazareth. L’enfant, lui, grandissait et se fortifiait, rempli de sagesse, et la grâce de Dieu était sur lui.

Reçois favorablement, Seigneur, les offrandes de ton peuple, pour qu’il obtienne dans le mystère eucharistique les biens auxquels il croit de tout son cœur. Par Jésus.

Quand nous allons communier, Seigneur, tu viens à notre rencontre; Produis en nos cœurs le fruit de ce sacrement, car seule ta grâce peut nous préparer à recevoir tes grâces. Par Jésus.
Méditation
« Quand vint la plénitude des temps, Dieu envoya son Fils, né d’une femme… » Dieu et l’homme se retrouvent à travers le cœur d’une femme, Marie. L’enfantement de Dieu par sa créature montre la puissance qu’a la femme bénie de Dieu, de l’enfanter dans les âmes. Quelques figures de femmes dans l’évangile nous le montrent : Anne qui atteint aujourd’hui la plénitude de sa vocation. Fille de Phanuel – dont le nom signifie « la face de Dieu » -, Anne contemple Dieu face à face. À la plénitude des temps, elle devient non seulement l’amour en prière, mais un prophète dont le témoignage va bouleverser Jérusalem. Il y a aussi la figure de Marie de Magdala à qui, le Seigneur ressuscité va confier la première annonce pascale. Cette femme devient l’apôtre des apôtres : « Pour toi, va trouver mes frères et dis-leur que je monte vers mon Père et votre Père. » Oui, toute femme bénie de Dieu a cette mission de l’enfanter dans le cœur des Hommes.
