1ère lecture : Col 3, 1-11
Frères, vous êtes ressuscités avec le Christ, recherchez les réalités d’en haut: c’est là qu’est le Christ, assis à la droite de Dieu. Pensez aux réalités d’en haut, non à celles de la terre. En effet, vous êtes passés par la mort, et votre vie reste cachée avec le Christ en Dieu. Quand paraîtra le Christ, votre vie, alors vous aussi, vous paraîtrez avec lui dans la gloire. Faites donc mourir en vous ce qui n’appartient qu’à la terre : débauche, impureté, passion, désir mauvais, et cette soif de posséder, qui est une idolâtrie. Voilà ce qui provoque la colère de Dieu contre ceux qui lui désobéissent, voilà quelle était votre conduite autrefois lorsque, vous aussi, vous viviez dans ces désordres. Mais maintenant, vous aussi, débarrassez-vous de tout cela : colère, emportement, méchanceté, insultes, propos grossiers sortis de votre bouche. Plus de mensonge entre vous : vous vous êtes débarrassés de l’homme ancien qui était en vous et de ses façons d’agir, et vous vous êtes revêtus de l’homme nouveau qui, pour se conformer à l’image de son Créateur, se renouvelle sans cesse en vue de la pleine connaissance. Ainsi, il n’y a plus le païen et le Juif, le circoncis et l’incirconcis, il n’y a plus le barbare ou le primitif, l’esclave et l’homme libre; mais il y a le Christ : il est tout, et en tous.

L’ironie d’être béni
La faim, la soif, les pleurs, la persécution et le rejet ne sont pas dans notre compréhension de ceux qui sont bénis. Cependant, Jésus affirme que ceux dans ces étapes sont bénis. Pourquoi ? Lorsqu’une personne dans le besoin reconnaît sa dépendance envers Dieu et compte réellement sur Lui, alors elle est bénie. C’est le cœur des Béatitudes. Au contraire, un avertissement est donné à ceux qui sont riches, qui rient, qui sont bien nourris et entendent toujours de bonnes choses sur eux-mêmes : ils ont tendance à se sentir autosuffisants et à déclarer leur indépendance de Dieu. L’enfer a été décrit par certains comme l’absence de Dieu ; être sans Dieu est un malheur, tandis qu’être avec Lui et dépendre de Lui est une bénédiction.
Alain fut un grand prédicateur dominicain et l’un des premiers disciples de saint Dominique. C’est lui qui coordonna le chapelet et l’enrichit en y ajoutant les méditations, ainsi que la vie de Jésus et Marie. Il le baptisa chapelet du Rosaire parce qu’il ressemblait à un bouquet de roses qu’on dépose aux pieds de la Vierge.

Prière et décisions
Comment la prière affecte-t-elle notre prise de décision ? Jésus prie toute la nuit jusqu’à l’aube pour prendre la décision sur lequel parmi Ses disciples serait un apôtre. Habituellement, Jésus prie avant de prendre des décisions majeures. Il en va de même avant qu’Il ne commence Son ministère public. Lorsque nous prions, principalement à propos de décisions dont nous ne sommes pas certains, ou nous donnons du temps à Dieu dans la méditation, nous pouvons découvrir qu’une décision particulière n’est pas la meilleure, ou nous pouvons obtenir une confirmation pour continuer dans le chemin. Même si nous n’obtenons pas de réponse, nous appelons Dieu dans la situation de telle sorte que même lorsque la décision ne fonctionne pas, nous sommes capables d’accepter le fait que Dieu le veut ainsi.

Meditation
“When day came, He summoned His disciples and picked out twelve of them.” This act of Jesus’ calls to mind the promises I made to Jesus during my Baptism. I am reminded of the weight and significance of a promise, knowing that Jesus always keeps His promises! I am challenged to revisit the promises I have made and continue making to fellow children of God. Am I aware that these commitments are made to Jesus Himself? How many of them have I kept, and how many do I intend to honour? Lord Jesus, guide me to always seek Your counsel before making any promise to others.
Adrian was a pagan officer of Nicomedia. Impressed by the courage of a group of Christians who were being tortured, he declared himself a Christian and was imprisoned with them before he was put to death. Adrian is the patron of soldiers and butchers.

La naissance d’un être spécial
La naissance de chaque personne est spécialement planifiée par Dieu, que vous le croyiez ou non. Nous ne sommes pas simplement jetés dans le monde, indépendamment de ce que nos parents pensent lorsque nous avons été conçus. Dieu a planifié toute notre vie même avant de nous créer. Aujourd’hui, nous célébrons la naissance de Marie, notre mère, dont la naissance est préparée par Dieu et une intervention spéciale est faite par le mérite de son Fils Jésus afin que par son Fils, elle soit sauvée du péché originel. Pour tous ceux qui appartiennent à la généalogie de Jésus, leur naissance et toutes leurs interventions dans la vie ne font que prouver ce point. Tout comme la naissance de Marie, en raison du rôle qu’elle doit jouer dans l’histoire du salut, toutes les naissances sont uniquement planifiées par Dieu.

First reading: Wisdom 9:13-18
What man indeed can know the intentions of God? Who can divine the will of the Lord? The reasonings of mortals are unsure and our intentions unstable; for a perishable body presses down the soul, and this tent of clay weighs down the teeming mind. It is hard enough for us to work out what is on earth, laborious to know what lies within our reach; who, then, can discover what is in the heavens? As for your intention, who could have learnt it, had you not granted Wisdom and sent your holy spirit from above? Thus have the paths of those on earth been straightened and men been taught what pleases you, and saved, by Wisdom.

Make us know the shortness of our life that we may gain wisdom of heart. Lord, relent! Is your anger for ever? Show pity to your servants.

Second reading: Philemon 1:9-10,12-17
This is Paul writing, an old man now and, what is more, still a prisoner of Christ Jesus. I am appealing to you for a child of mine, whose father I became while wearing these chains: I mean Onesimus. I am sending him back to you, and with him – I could say – a part of my own self. I should have liked to keep him with me; he could have been a substitute for you, to help me while I am in the chains that the Good News has brought me. However, I did not want to do anything without your consent; it would have been forcing your act of kindness, which should be spontaneous. I know you have been deprived of Onesimus for a time, but it was only so that you could have him back for ever, not as a slave any more, but something much better than a slave, a dear brother; especially dear to me, but how much more to you, as a blood-brother as well as a brother in the Lord. So if all that we have in common means anything to you, welcome him as you would me.

Gospel: Luke 14:25-33
Great crowds accompanied Jesus on his way and he turned and spoke to them. ‘If any man comes to me without hating his father, mother, wife, children, brothers, sisters, yes and his own life too, he cannot be my disciple. Anyone who does not carry his cross and come after me cannot be my disciple. ‘And indeed, which of you here, intending to build a tower, would not first sit down and work out the cost to see if he had enough to complete it? Otherwise, if he laid the foundation and then found himself unable to finish the work, the onlookers would all start making fun of him and saying, “Here is a man who started to build and was unable to finish.” Or again, what king marching to war against another king would not first sit down and consider whether with ten thousand men he could stand up to the other who advanced against him with twenty thousand? If not, then while the other king was still a long way off, he would send envoys to sue for peace. So in the same way, none of you can be my disciple unless he gives up all his possessions.’
Prayer over the Offerings
O God, who give us the gift of true prayer and of peace, graciously grant that through this offering, we may do fitting homage to your divine majesty and, by partaking of the sacred mystery, we may be faithfully united in mind and heart. Through Christ our Lord.

Grant that your faithful, O Lord, whom you nourish and endow with life through the food of your Word and heavenly Sacrament, may so benefit from your beloved Son’s great gifts that we may merit an eternal share in his life. Who lives and reigns for ever and ever.
Meditation
“Still a prisoner of Christ Jesus,” declares Paul. This proclamation for Jesus brings to mind the other word from Scripture which says that “anyone who commits sin is a slave to Satan”. In my daily struggle, two glaring choices confront me: If I choose to do good, Jesus catches me in His net; if I choose to succumb to evil by committing sin, Satan imprisons me as his slave in his dungeon. I see the need to put in extra effort to always make the choice for Jesus. I acknowledge my responsibility for the decisions I make. Lord, help me to resist the allure of my enemy’s sweet, attractive, and dirty path, enticing me to keep blaming others for what is happening to me.
Tu es juste, Seigneur, et tes jugements sont droits: Agis pour ton serviteur selon ton amour, enseigne-moi tes volontés.
Prière d’ouverture
Dieu qui as envoyé ton Fils pour nous sauver et pour faire de nous tes enfants d’adoption, regarde avec bonté ceux que tu aimes comme un père. Puisque nous croyons au Christ, accorde-nous la vraie liberté et la vie éternelle. Par Jésus Christ.
1ère lecture : Sagesse 9, 13-18
Quel homme peut découvrir les intentions de Dieu ? Qui peut comprendre les volontés du Seigneur ? Les réflexions des mortels sont incertaines, et nos pensées, instables ; car un corps périssable appesantit notre âme, et cette enveloppe d’argile alourdit notre esprit aux mille pensées. Nous avons peine à nous représenter ce qui est sur terre, et nous trouvons avec effort ce qui est à notre portée ; ce qui est dans les cieux, qui donc l’a découvert ? Et qui aurait connu ta volonté, si tu n’avais pas donné la Sagesse et envoyé d’en haut ton Esprit Saint ? C’est ainsi que les sentiers des habitants de la terre sont devenus droits ; c’est ainsi que les hommes ont appris ce qui te plaît et, par la Sagesse, ont été sauvés. – Parole du Seigneur.

R/ D’âge en âge, Seigneur, tu as été notre refuge. (Ps 89, 1)
Tu fais retourner l’homme à la poussière ; tu as dit : « Retournez, fils d’Adam ! » À tes yeux, mille ans sont comme hier, c’est un jour qui s’en va, une heure dans la nuit.
Tu les as balayés : ce n’est qu’un songe ; dès le matin, c’est une herbe changeante : elle fleurit le matin, elle change ; le soir, elle est fanée, desséchée.
Apprends-nous la vraie mesure de nos jours : que nos cœurs pénètrent la sagesse. Reviens, Seigneur, pourquoi tarder ? Ravise-toi par égard pour tes serviteurs.
Rassasie-nous de ton amour au matin, que nous passions nos jours dans la joie et les chants. Que vienne sur nous la douceur du Seigneur notre Dieu! Consolide pour nous l’ouvrage de nos mains.
2ème lecture : Philémon 9b-10.12-17
Bien-aimé, moi, Paul, tel que je suis, un vieil homme et, qui plus est, prisonnier maintenant à cause du Christ Jésus, j’ai quelque chose à te demander pour Onésime, mon enfant à qui, en prison, j’ai donné la vie dans le Christ. Je te le renvoie, lui qui est comme mon cœur. Je l’aurais volontiers gardé auprès de moi, pour qu’il me rende des services en ton nom, à moi qui suis en prison à cause de l’Évangile. Mais je n’ai rien voulu faire sans ton accord, pour que tu accomplisses ce qui est bien, non par contrainte mais volontiers. S’il a été éloigné de toi pendant quelque temps, c’est peut-être pour que tu le retrouves définitivement, non plus comme un esclave, mais, mieux qu’un esclave, comme un frère bien-aimé : il l’est vraiment pour moi, combien plus le sera-t-il pour toi, aussi bien humainement que dans le Seigneur. Si donc tu estimes que je suis en communion avec toi, accueille-le comme si c’était moi.

En ce temps-là, de grandes foules faisaient route avec Jésus ; il se retourna et leur dit : « Si quelqu’un vient à moi sans me préférer à son père, sa mère, sa femme, ses enfants, ses frères et sœurs, et même à sa propre vie, il ne peut pas être mon disciple. Celui qui ne porte pas sa croix pour marcher à ma suite ne peut pas être mon disciple. Quel est celui d’entre vous qui, voulant bâtir une tour, ne commence par s’asseoir pour calculer la dépense et voir s’il a de quoi aller jusqu’au bout ? Car, si jamais il pose les fondations et n’est pas capable d’achever, tous ceux qui le verront vont se moquer de lui : ‘Voilà un homme qui a commencé à bâtir et n’a pas été capable d’achever !’ Et quel est le roi qui, partant en guerre contre un autre roi, ne commence par s’asseoir pour voir s’il peut, avec dix mille hommes, affronter l’autre qui marche contre lui avec vingt mille ? S’il ne le peut pas, il envoie, pendant que l’autre est encore loin, une délégation pour demander les conditions de paix. Ainsi donc, celui d’entre vous qui ne renonce pas à tout ce qui lui appartient ne peut pas être mon disciple. ».

Le Coût de la Fidélité Si un politicien se lève lors d’une réunion publique pour s’adresser à la foule en disant : «Votez pour moi et si vous le faites, vous perdrez votre maison, vos biens, votre famille et tout ce que vous avez!» allez-vous voter pour ce candidat? Le vrai disciple chrétien implique un détachement total de tout le reste mais un attachement total et une adhésion à Jésus le Maître; suivre ses pas jusqu’au Calvaire en portant nos propres croix quotidiennes. L’Évangile d’aujourd’hui parle de l’importance de la loyauté et de l’allégeance à Jésus par-dessus toutes les autres loyautés, y compris la famille, l’intérêt personnel et les possessions. Jésus veut que nous le suivions radicalement, ce qui impliquerait de quitter notre égocentrisme et d’embrasser le fait dur que la fidélité à Lui pourrait même nous coûter la vie. Quittons le monde et les conforts que nous avons créés pour nous-mêmes et devenons des disciples de Son monde afin que nous gagnions tout, y compris la vie éternelle.

Meditation
The dispute concerning the Sabbath in today’s Gospel reminds me of the familiar excuses I have often presented whenever I fail to ‘Keep The Lord’s Day Holy.’ I confess, at times, that I have justified my actions with excuses such as oversleeping, having dirty clothes, or being caught up in preparation for an important meeting! And all along, I might have revealed that I spent the previous night at a bachelor’s night, dancing till this the early hours of this Sunday morning. Curiously, no similar obstacles deterred me from being punctual at a ‘njangi’ where money was at stake, or prevented me from visiting the bank promptly on paydays. It is a poignant reminder to be honest and prioritise the sanctity of the Lord’s Day.
