Pope St. Gregory the Great
(540 – 604)

He was elected Pope on 3rd September 590, the first monk to be elected to this office. He wrote extensively on pastoral care, spirituality, and morals, and designated himself “servant of the servants of God.” He died on 12th March 604.
Entrance Antiphon
Blessed Gregory, raised upon the throne of Peter, sought always the beauty of the Lord and lived in celebration of that love.
Collect
O God, who care for your people with gentleness and rule them in love, through the intercession of Pope Saint Gregory, endow, we pray, with a spirit of wisdom those to whom you have given authority to govern, that the flourishing of a holy flock may become the eternal joy of the shepherds. But the time will come, the time for the bridegroom to be taken away from them; that will be the time when they will fast.’ He also told them this parable, ‘No one tears a piece from a new cloak to put it on an old cloak; if he does, not only will he have torn the new one, but the piece taken from the new will not match the old. ‘And nobody puts new wine into old skins; if he does, the new wine will burst the skins and then run out, and the skins will be lost. No; new wine must be put into fresh skins. And nobody who has been drinking old wine wants new. “The old is good” he says.’

Grant our supplication, we pray, O Lord, that this sacrifice we present in celebration of Saint Gregory may be for our good, since through its offering you have loosed the offences of all the world. Through Christ our Lord.

This is the steward, faithful and prudent, whom the Lord set over his household to give them their allowance of food at the proper time.

Through Christ the teacher, O Lord, instruct those you feed with Christ, the living Bread, that on the feast day of Saint Gregory they may learn your truth and express it in works of charity. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
Perhaps, we can readily rattle all the titles and names of Jesus which we have read in books or heard in sermons and inspirational songs. The question remains whether any of these titles has an impact in our lives and relationship with Jesus. We could simply be like the Apostles saying what they had heard others say about Jesus. He asks us today: “But you, who do you say that I am?” This is a personal question. It demands a personal answer. Such an answer ought to be based on a personal experience of an encounter with Jesus. This is the task of our spiritual journey.

Un jour de sabbat, Jésus traversait des champs ; ses disciples arrachaient des épis et les mangeaient, après les avoir froissés dans leurs mains. Quelques pharisiens dirent alors : « Pourquoi faites-vous ce qui n’est pas permis le jour du sabbat ? » Jésus leur répondit : « N’avez-vous pas lu ce que fit David un jour qu’il eut faim, lui-même et ceux qui l’accompagnaient ? Il entra dans la maison de Dieu, prit les pains de l’offrande, en mangea et en donna à ceux qui l’accompagnaient, alors que les prêtres seulement ont le droit d’en manger. » Il leur disait encore : « Le Fils de l’homme est maître du sabbat. »

Méditation
Le sabbat, inspiré du repos de Dieu après la création du monde, avait pour vocation de donner à l’homme un jour de répit. Il aidait ainsi l’homme à se refaire. Avec le temps, sa valeur institutionnelle a pris de l’ampleur au point où les pharisiens ont perdu de vue sa valeur d’aide pour l’homme. Il est devenu une institution que rien ne doit empêcher de respecter, même pas la faim. Ils ont oublié qu’un ventre creux n’a point d’oreille. Combien de fois tombons-nous dans ce même travers ? Nos pratiques religieuses et même sociales ont pour but de nous aider à vivre notre relation au Créateur. Il est bon de les respecter, mais nous ne devons pas les transformer en fardeau, devenant ainsi leur esclave. Jésus, le maître du sabbat est venu pour nous donner la vie en abondance. Si nous sommes à sa suite, nous devons agir comme lui. Nous devons nous rappeler que le plus important est de permettre à l’Homme de vivre heureux et digne.

Meditation
Sunday, the weekly celebration of the Lord’s Resurrection, is the “new Sabbath”, the fulfilment of the Sabbath. On Sundays, the faithful are to abstain from labour and business concerns which impede the worship to be rendered to God, the joy which is proper to the Lord’s Day or the proper relaxation of mind and body. The issue in the objection of the Pharisees is not so much the Sabbath, but their exaggerated multiplication and detailed expansion of laws. In the end, holiness would be more about keeping laws and less about loving God. Jesus teaches otherwise.

Saint Grégoire le Grand, pape et docteur de l’Eglise

D’abord préfet de la ville de Rome, Grégoire (vers 540-604) se retire dans un des monastères qu’il a fondés. Il est arraché à sa solitude pour aller à Constantinople comme légat pontifical. Elu pape en 590, il met au service de l’Église ses dons d’organisateur et d’écrivain. Il envoie des missionnaires en Angleterre. Il organise la liturgie romaine, aux mélodies de laquelle son nom reste attaché. Dans ses ouvrages, ce contemplatif commente sans cesse les Ecritures ; il enseigne à tous les chemins de la perfection évangélique et donne aux pasteurs des conseils pour conduire à Dieu les hommes qui leur sont confiés.

Le Seigneur s’est choisi saint Grégoire comme prêtre, et, lui ouvrant ses trésors, il lui a donné de faire beaucoup de bien.

Mais des jours viendront où l’Époux leur sera enlevé ; alors, en ces jours-là, ils jeûneront. » Il leur dit aussi en parabole : « Personne ne déchire un morceau à un vêtement neuf pour le coudre sur un vieux vêtement. Autrement, on aura déchiré le neuf, et le morceau qui vient du neuf ne s’accordera pas avec le vieux. Exauce notre prière, Seigneur : permets qu’au jour où nous fêtons saint Grégoire ce sacrifice nous apporte le salut, puisque, dans cette immolation, tu as voulu que soient remis les péchés du monde entier. Par Jésus.

Méditation
Le changement n’est jamais facile. Quand on est habitué à une manière de fonctionner, il ne nous est pas du tout facile d’accepter le changement. Jésus en fait l’expérience face aux pharisiens. Ils critiquent sa manière de faire avec ses disciples vue qu’elle ne répond pas à ce qu’ils ont toujours vu faire. Ce n’est pas que Jésus a en horreur les pratiques existantes en son temps, c’est juste qu’il a le souci de nous conduire à l’essentiel : l’Amour de Dieu et de nos frères et sœurs. Ainsi des pratiques cultuelles comme le jeûne prennent une valeur plus grande et plus belle. Sa présence à nos côtés est une noce qui nous apporte la joie mais aussi des exigences. Si nous ne voulons pas perdre sa présence, il nous faut nous séparer radicalement des vieilles outres de notre vie des ténèbres, afin d’accueillir le vin nouveau des noces de l’agneau dans les outres neuves de sa Parole.

En ce temps-là, la foule se pressait autour de Jésus pour écouter la parole de Dieu, tandis qu’il se tenait au bord du lac de Génésareth. Il vit deux barques qui se trouvaient au bord du lac ; les pêcheurs en étaient descendus et lavaient leurs filets. Jésus monta dans une des barques qui appartenait à Simon, et lui demanda de s’écarter un peu du rivage. Puis il s’assit et, de la barque, il enseignait les foules. Quand il eut fini de parler, il dit à Simon : « Avance au large, et jetez vos filets pour la pêche. »Simon lui répondit : « Maître, nous avons peiné toute la nuit sans rien prendre ; mais, sur ta parole, je vais jeter les filets. » Et l’ayant fait, ils capturèrent une telle quantité de poissons que leurs filets allaient se déchirer. Ils firent signe à leurs compagnons de l’autre barque de venir les aider. Ceux-ci vinrent, et ils remplirent les deux barques, à tel point qu’elles enfonçaient. à cette vue, Simon-Pierre tomba aux genoux de Jésus, en disant : « Éloigne-toi de moi, Seigneur, car je suis un homme pécheur. » En effet, un grand effroi l’avait saisi, lui et tous ceux qui étaient avec lui, devant la quantité de poissons qu’ils avaient pêchés ; et de même Jacques et Jean, fils de Zébédée, les associés de Simon. Jésus dit à Simon : « Sois sans crainte, désormais ce sont des hommes que tu prendras. » Alors ils ramenèrent les barques au rivage et, laissant tout, ils le suivirent.

Ce récit de la vocation des premiers disciples de Jésus conclue, dans le ministère de Jésus en Galilée, une série d’enseignements donnée à Capharnaüm et ses environs. Aujourd’hui Pierre fait la profonde expérience de la seigneurie de Jésus ; cela le bouleverse. En effet, Pierre et ses compagnons lavaient leurs filets pendant que Jésus enseignait. Sûrement concentré sur son activité Pierre et ses compagnons devaient écouter Jésus sans grande attention étant préoccupés par leur mauvaise nuit de pêche. Cependant, lorsque Jésus se penche vers eux, les rejoint dans leur situation et il leur dit quoi faire, ils l’écoutent et s’exécutent. La suite, on la connait. Nous ne devons pas nous imaginer que notre baptême est une garantie infaillible pour notre salut. Il nous faut une expérience personnelle profonde du Christ dans notre vie au quotidien, à travers l’écoute et la mise en pratique de sa Parole. Tout laisser et Le suivre.

He was born in Montréal on 3rd April 1758 and ordained a priest in 1783. In the face of persecution he took shelter with the Eudist Fathers in Paris. He was executed in 1792 together with almost 200 other priests. He was beatified by Pope Pius XI on 17 October 1926.

Then he sat down and taught the crowds from the boat.

Meditation
Simon has every reason to disregard the instruction of Jesus, for he is a professional fisherman and Jesus is a carpenter. But Simon follows Jesus; and the result? A huge catch! Sometimes we have too much confidence in what we know, or in our experience of life, or we get stuck in our little world. It is sad, especially when it goes to the extent that we close up to the promptings of God. Sometimes what God expects of us may not seem to align with human logic or with our expectations. We need to be like Simon, to listen to God, and to follow his will all the same.

En ce temps-là, Jésus quitta la synagogue de Capharnaüm et entra dans la maison de Simon. Or, la belle-mère de Simon était oppressée par une forte fièvre, et on demanda à Jésus de faire quelque chose pour elle. Il se pencha sur elle, menaça la fièvre, et la fièvre la quitta. À l’instant même, la femme se leva et elle les servait. Au coucher du soleil, tous ceux qui avaient des malades atteints de diverses infirmités les lui amenèrent. Et Jésus, imposant les mains à chacun d’eux, les guérissait. Et même des démons sortaient de beaucoup d’entre eux en criant : « C’est toi le Fils de Dieu!» Mais Jésus les menaçait et leur interdisait de parler parce qu’ils savaient, eux, que le Christ, c’était lui. Quand il fit jour, Jésus sortit et s’en alla dans un endroit désert. Les foules le cherchaient ; elles arrivèrent jusqu’à lui, et elles le retenaient pour l’empêcher de les quitter. Mais il leur dit : « Aux autres villes aussi, il faut que j’annonce la Bonne Nouvelle du règne de Dieu, car c’est pour cela que j’ai été envoyé. » Et il proclamait l’Évangile dans les synagogues du pays des Juifs.

Méditation
L’attitude de Jésus est assez étrange. Alors que sa renommée gagne du terrain, Il préfère annoncer la Bonne Nouvelle du règne de Dieu à d’autres villes. En effet, dans notre logique humaine, il nous est préférable de rester là où l’on est accepté et aimé. Pourquoi s’essayer dans l’inconnu et l’incertain ? La beauté de la mission s’exprime justement dans cette attitude particulière de détachement de Jésus. En effet, dans le champ du Seigneur, le plus important ne réside pas dans les réussites mais dans les défis à venir. Le disciple du Christ ne doit jamais dormir sur ses lauriers s’imaginant qu’il est arrivé. Il y a toujours à faire. Il y a toujours des ‘’belle-mère de Pierre’’, des malades, des infirmes, des possédés qui ont besoin de Jésus-Christ. Il n’est donc pas question de se contenter de notre petit monde où tout nous réussit, mais de relever continuellement le défi de l’évangélisation de nos frères.

St. Giles was a seventh century Athenian of noble birth. His piety and learning made him an object of great admiration. He spent many years in solitude with God. He founded a monastery with an excellent discipline therein. St. Giles died in about the year 710.

Leaving the synagogue, Jesus went to Simon’s house. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever and they asked him to do something for her. At sunset all those who had friends suffering from diseases of one kind or another brought them to him, and laying his hands on each he cured them. Devils too came out of many people, howling, ‘You are the Son of God.’ But he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak because they knew that he was the Christ. When daylight came he left the house and made his way to a lonely place. The crowds went to look for him, and when they had caught up with him they wanted to prevent him leaving them, but he answered, ‘I must proclaim the Good News of the kingdom of God to the other towns too, because that is what I was sent to do.’ And he continued his preaching in the synagogues of Judaea.

Meditation
Sometimes we imagine there’s not much we can do for others who are suffering, especially from diseases. We seek medical attention in various places. We must also always remember to bring them to Jesus, like those in the Gospel. Jesus is the supreme physician, who cures the soul, and then the body if it is his will. This is the power of intercession, when we lift others up in prayer. In addition, we must not forget the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick in which we encounter the same Jesus who cured Simon’s mother and all the other sick people.

Meditation
Like many believers at the time, the believers in Thessalonica were expecting Jesus to return very soon and usher in the kingdom in its fullness. Paul, however, sets the record straight indicating that they should not worry about when Jesus will come again, but should instead concentrate on how ready they will be. Paul’s advice is just as relevant today as it was two thousand years ago. In the Gospel, Jesus preaches in the synagogue with authority because he is authority incarnate- the Word made flesh. While Jesus’s duty is to preach with authority, ours is to approach God’s Word submissively and with an eagerness to do everything the Lord desires. Are you eager to be taught by the Lord and to conform your life to His Word?
