St. Angela Merici (1470 – 1540)
She was born in Desenziano, in Lombardy, in about 1470. In 1535 she founded the Ursulines, an order of nuns devoted to giving a Christian education to girls from poor families. She died in 1540.

First reading : Hebrews 10:11-18
All the priests stand at their duties every day, offering over and over again the same sacrifices which are quite incapable of taking sins away. He, on the other hand, has offered one single sacrifice for sins, and then taken his place forever, at the right hand of God, where he is now waiting until his enemies are made into a footstool for him. By virtue of that one single offering, he has achieved the eternal perfection of all whom he is sanctifying. The Holy Spirit assures us of this; for he says, first: This is the covenant I will make with them when those days arrive; and the Lord then goes on to say:
I will put my laws into their hearts and write them on their minds. I will never call their sins to mind, or their offences. When all sins have been forgiven, there can be no more sin offerings.

Now it happened that, as he sowed, some of the seed fell on the edge of the path, and the birds came and ate it up. Some seed fell on rocky ground where it found little soil and sprang up straight away, because there was no depth of earth; and when the sun came up it was scorched and, not having any roots, it withered away. Some seed fell into thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it, and it produced no crop. Then how will you understand any of the parables? What the sower is sowing is the word. Those on the edge of the path where the word is sown are people who have no sooner heard it than Satan comes and carries away the word that was sown in them. Similarly, those who receive the seed on patches of rock are people who, when first they hear the word, welcome it at once with joy. But they have no root in them, they do not last; should some trial come, or some persecution on account of the word, they fall away at once. Then there are others who receive the seed in thorns. These have heard the word, but the worries of this world, the lure of riches and all the other passions come in to choke the word, and so it produces nothing. And there are those who have received the seed in rich soil: they hear the word and accept it and yield a harvest, thirty and sixty and a hundredfold.’

Meditation
When we hear the word of God clearly, we seek to understand it and apply it to our lives so that it may bear fruit in us. Our hearts are, therefore, the soil on which the word of God is planted. What kind of soil is my heart – the edge of the path, rocky ground, thorns, or rich soil? An effective messenger of the word of God seeks to have a heart that corresponds to rich soil, so that the word of God may bear abundant fruit in his/her life.

Saints Timothée et Tite, évêques
L’Église en Occident les unit comme disciples très chers à Paul qui leur confie la charge épiscopale dans l’Église naissante. Si Timothée fut le compagnon des travaux et des souffrances et aussi confident de Paul, Tite était le négociateur, celui qu’il envoyait pour dissiper les malentendus, apaiser les discordes et organiser une nouvelle Église.

Ainsi parle le Seigneur Dieu : « Je vous donnerai des pasteurs selon mon cœur ; ils vous conduiront avec sagesse et intelligence ».
Pour que les saints Timothée et Tite soient les pasteurs de ton peuple, tu leur as donné, Seigneur un esprit d’amour et de vérité ; Puisque nous célébrons aujourd’hui leur fête, accorde-nous de progresser en les imitant, et de trouver un soutien dans leur prière. Par Jésus Christ.
Première lecture : 2 Timothée 1, 1-8
Paul, Apôtre du Christ Jésus par la volonté de Dieu, selon la promesse de la vie que nous avons dans le Christ Jésus, à Timothée, mon enfant bien-aimé. À toi, la grâce, la miséricorde et la paix de la part de Dieu le Père et du Christ Jésus notre Seigneur. Je suis plein de gratitude envers Dieu, à qui je rends un culte avec une conscience pure, à la suite de mes ancêtres, je lui rends grâce en me souvenant continuellement de toi dans mes prières, nuit et jour. Me rappelant tes larmes, j’ai un très vif désir de te revoir pour être rempli de joie. J’ai souvenir de la foi sincère qui est en toi : c’était celle qui habitait d’abord Loïs, ta grand-mère, et celle d’Eunice, ta mère, et j’ai la conviction que c’est aussi la tienne. Voilà pourquoi, je te le rappelle, ravive le don gratuit de Dieu, ce don qui est en toi depuis que je t’ai imposé les mains. Car ce n’est pas un esprit de peur que Dieu nous a donné, mais un esprit de force, d’amour et de pondération. N’aie donc pas honte de rendre témoignage à notre Seigneur, et n’aie pas honte de moi, qui suis son prisonnier ; mais, avec la force de Dieu, prends ta part des souffrances liées à l’annonce de l’Évangile.

Permets, nous t’en prions, Dieu tout-puissant, Qu’ayant reçu de toi la grâce d’une nouvelle vie, nous puissions nous en émerveiller toujours. Par Jésus.
La réponse de Jésus est claire dans l’Évangile : celui qui fait la volonté de Dieu est pour moi un frère, une sœur, une mère. Dès lors, la nouvelle consanguinité est celle consistant à faire la volonté de Dieu. On comprend pourquoi des personnes ayant peu de choses en commun décident de se mettre ensemble pour suivre le Christ. On comprend aussi pourquoi de nombreuses familles chrétiennes n’hésitent pas à ouvrir leurs portes à leurs frères et sœurs qui confessent la même foi en Jésus-Christ sans les avoir connus auparavant. La famille des enfants de Dieu transcende les barrières biologiques ou tribales ; elle est planétaire et spirituelle. Elle consiste à cultiver dans les cœurs l’esprit de Jésus-Christ.

Timothy and Titus were converted to Christianity by St Paul, and became his companions and helpers. He wrote them the so-called “pastoral” epistles, giving advice for pastors and people alike.

Meditation
Jesus knows his family and accepts every family member. Yet, at the same time, he wants his family and everyone else to know it does not suffice to belong to a blood family. This is why he says: “Anyone who does the will of God, that person is my brother and sister and mother.” We need to belong to the large family of God’s children and the only qualification we need to belong to that family is knowing the will of God and doing it. Do I seek to know God’s will and to do it?

Conversion de Saint Paul Apôtre, Fête
(Fin de la semaine de prière pour l’unité des chrétiens.)
Paul est né à Tarse, en Cilicie, province romaine du Sud-Est de l’Asie Mineure (Turquie actuelle), entre 7 et 10 (environ l’an 8). Il était un Juif de la diaspora. Il parlait grec et était citoyen romain. Entre 12 et 13 ans, il quitte Tarse pour s’installer à Jérusalem pour y recevoir l’enseignement du rabbin Gamaliel l’Ancien. Paul était un Pharisien accompli, marqué par une profonde orthodoxie. Ce qui justifie sa hargne et son intolérance vis-à-vis des chrétiens qu’il considère comme une menace pour sa religion. Paul était sincère dans son engagement.

Dieu qui a instruit le monde entier par la parole de l ’Apôtre Saint Paul dont nous célébrons aujourd’hui la conversion, accordes-nous d’aller vers toi en cherchant à lui ressembler, et d’être, dans le monde, les témoins de ton Évangile. Par Jésus Christ.
Première lecture : Act 9, 1-22
Saul était toujours animé d’une rage meurtrière contre les disciples du Seigneur. Il alla trouver le grand prêtre et lui demanda des lettres pour les synagogues de Damas, afin que, s’il trouvait des hommes et des femmes qui suivaient le Chemin du Seigneur, il les amène enchaînés à Jérusalem Comme il était en route et approchait de Damas, soudain une lumière venant du ciel l’enveloppa de sa clarté. Il fut précipité à terre; il entendit une voix qui lui disait : « Saul, Saul, pourquoi me persécuter ? ». Il demanda : « Qui es-tu, Seigneur ? ». La voix répondit : « Je suis Jésus, celui que tu persécutes. Relève-toi et entre dans la ville : on te dira ce que tu dois faire. ». Ses compagnons de route s’étaient arrêtés, muets de stupeur : ils entendaient la voix, mais ils ne voyaient personne. Saul se releva de terre et, bien qu’il eût les yeux ouverts, il ne voyait rien. Ils le prirent par la main pour le faire entrer à Damas. Pendant trois jours, il fut privé de la vue et il resta sans manger ni boire. Or, il y avait à Damas un disciple nommé Ananie. Dans une vision, le Seigneur lui dit : « Ananie ! » Il répondit : « Me voici, Seigneur. » Le Seigneur reprit : « Lève-tôt, va dans la rue appelée rue Droite, chez Jude: tu demanderas un homme de Tarse nommé Saul. Il est en prière, et il a eu cette vision : un homme, du nom d’Ananie, entrait et lui imposait les mains pour lui rendre la vue. » Ananie répondit : « Seigneur, j’ai beaucoup entendu parler de cet homme, et de tout le mal qu’il a fait subir à tes fidèles à Jérusalem. Il est ici, après avoir reçu de la part des grands prêtres le pouvoir d’enchaîner tous ceux qui invoquent ton nom. » Mais le Seigneur lui dit : «Va! Car cet homme est l’instrument que j’ai choisi pour faire parvenir mon nom auprès des nations, des rois et des fils d’Israël. Et moi, je lui montrerai tout ce qu’il lui faudra souffrir pour mon nom. » Ananie partit donc et entra dans la maison. Il imposa les mains à Saul, en disant : « Saul, mon frère, celui qui m’a envoyé, c’est le Seigneur, c’est Jésus qui t’est apparu sur le chemin par lequel tu venais. Ainsi, tu vas retrouver la vue, et tu seras rempli d’Esprit Saint. » Aussitôt tombèrent de ses yeux comme des écailles, et il retrouva la vue. Il se leva, puis il fut baptisé. Alors il prit de la nourriture et les forces lui revinrent. Il passa quelques jours à Damas avec les disciples et, sans plus attendre, il proclamait Jésus dans les synagogues, affirmant que celui-ci est le Fils de Dieu. Tous ceux qui écoutaient étaient stupéfaits et disaient : « N’est-ce pas lui qui, à Jérusalem, s’acharnait contre ceux qui invoquent ce nom-là, et n’est-il pas venu ici afin de les ramener enchaînés chez les grands prêtres ? » Mais Saul, avec une force de plus en plus grande, réfutait les Juifs qui habitaient Damas, en démontrant que Jésus est le Christ.

2. Son amour envers nous s’est montré le plus fort ; éternelle est la fidélité du Seigneur!

En ce temps-là, Jésus ressuscité dit aux onze Apôtres: «Allez dans le monde entier. Proclamez l’Évangile à toute la création. Celui qui croira et sera baptisé sera sauvé; celui qui refusera de croire sera condamné. Voici les signes qui accompagneront ceux qui deviendront croyants: en mon nom, ils expulseront les démons; ils parleront en langues nouvelles; ils prendront des serpents dans leurs mains et, s’ils boivent un poison mortel, il ne leur fera pas de mal; ils imposeront les mains aux malades, et les malades s’en trouveront bien.»
Que ton Esprit, Seigneur notre Dieu, nous donne, dans cette eucharistie, la lumière de la foi qui éclairait l’Apôtre Paul quand il annonçait ta gloire aux nations païennes. Par Jésus.

Que cette communion, Seigneur notre Dieu, entretienne en nous la charité qui brûlait au cœur de l’Apôtre Paul et lui donnait un souci pas
« Allez dans le monde entier. Proclamez l’Évangile à toute la création ». Ce mandat missionnaire, bien qu’adressé originellement aux Onze, incombe à toute la famille chrétienne. L’Évangile est de fait transculturel et transfrontalier. Il s’agit d’une réalité appelée à traverser le monde entier. Dans la dynamique de l’évangélisation, la création toute entière est concernée. La perspective écologique devra donc traverser toute activité d’évangélisation. Le soin à accorder à la terre, aux plantes, aux animaux, œuvrer en faveur d’une économie raisonnable et juste, devront constituer des leviers d’une nouvelle évangélisation qui promeut le développement humain intégral.

The Conversion of St. Paul, Apostle
Feast
Saul, the young man who looked after the cloaks of the men who were stoning St. Stephen, grew into a dedicated and efficient persecutor of Christians. Today’s feast celebrates the day Christ appeared to him in a vision as he was on the way to Damascus, reproached him for his persecutions and converted him to the true faith.

I even persecuted this Way to the death, and sent women as well as men to prison in chains as the high priest and the whole council of elders can testify, since they even sent me with letters to their brothers in Damascus. When I set off, it was with the intention of bringing prisoners back from there to Jerusalem for punishment. ‘I was on that journey and nearly at Damascus when about midday a bright light from heaven suddenly shone round me. I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?” I answered: Who are you, Lord? and he said to me, “I am Jesus the Nazarene, and you are persecuting me.” The people with me saw the light but did not hear his voice as he spoke to me. I said: What am I to do, Lord? The Lord answered, “Stand up and go into Damascus, and there you will be told what you have been appointed to do.” The light had been so dazzling that I was blind and my companions had to take me by the hand; and so I came to Damascus. Someone called Ananias, a devout follower of the Law and highly thought of by all the Jews living there, came to see me; he stood beside me and said, “Brother Saul, receive your sight.” Instantly my sight came back and I was able to see him. Meditation
Paul, whose conversion we celebrate today, was a Jewish believer, and a fierce persecutor of the followers of Jesus. After his conversion, he used the same zeal with which he persecuted the Church to preach the message of the Good News to the Gentiles, even to the point of dying for the sake of Christ Jesus. Today, we pray that our own conversion may lead us to participate in the zeal of Saint Paul and bear witness to the message of the Good News in our thought, speech and action.

Première lecture : Jonas 3, 1-5.10
La parole du Seigneur fut adressée de nouveau à Jonas : « Lève-toi, va à Ninive, la grande ville païenne, proclame le message que je te donne sur elle. » Jonas se leva et partit pour Ninive, selon la parole du Seigneur. Or, Ninive était une ville extraordinairement grande : il fallait trois jours pour la traverser. Jonas la parcourut une journée à peine en proclamant : « Encore quarante jours, et Ninive sera détruite ! » Aussitôt, les gens de Ninive crurent en Dieu. Ils annoncèrent un jeûne, et tous, du plus grand au plus petit, se vêtirent de toile à sac. En voyant leur réaction, et comment ils se détournaient de leur conduite mauvaise, Dieu renonça au châtiment dont il les avait menacés.

Car il passe, ce monde tel que nous le voyons.

Après l’arrestation de Jean le Baptiste, Jésus partit pour la Galilée proclamer l’Évangile de Dieu ; il disait : « Les temps sont accomplis: le règne de Dieu est tout proche. Convertissez-vous et croyez à l’Évangile. » Passant le long de la mer de Galilée, Jésus vit Simon et André, le frère de Simon, en train de jeter les filets dans la mer, car c’étaient des pêcheurs. Il leur dit: « Venez à ma suite. Je vous ferai devenir pêcheurs d’hommes. » Aussitôt, laissant leurs filets, ils le suivirent. Jésus avança un peu et il vit Jacques, fils de Zébédée, et son frère Jean, qui étaient dans la barque et réparaient les filets. Aussitôt, Jésus les appela. Alors, laissant dans la barque leur père Zébédée avec ses ouvriers, ils partirent à sa suite.

Rien ne peut arrêter la propagation de la Parole de Dieu. Jean le Baptiste est arrêté. Jésus se met en route pour proclamer la Bonne Nouvelle et il prépare déjà la continuité en appelant à lui des disciples. L’urgence de la continuité en préparant l’avenir est un devoir pour tout fidèle du Christ. Jamais la mission ne devra s’arrêter avec nous, instruments dans la main du Seigneur. Jamais non plus nos projets ne devraient s’estomper avec notre départ de cette terre. Il est urgent de toujours constituer des passerelles capables d’assurer la continuité dans nos choix de vie.

Meditation
The First Reading and the Gospel present us with a similar preaching: repent for the end is nigh. The response presented in both readings by the people who hear the message is different. In Jonah’s case, the community turns back Jesus’ listeners make a personal turn-back. This personal response is seen in the actions of Andrew and Simon, James and John. Whether in the case of the Ninevites or in the case of the two pairs of brothers, the response is prompt and genuine. Each one of us is invited to sacrifice something for the sake of Jesus, be it comfort, luxury, belongings, or sinful ways.

Meditation
Jesus is presented in the gospel of Mark as one who really has no time for himself or time to waste, moving from one activity to another. The readings today tell of how Jesus attends to a large crowd of people and he and his disciples have no time even to eat. How concerned are we about our own mission and the happiness of those who need our services? What is my attitude towards a service I am called upon to render to others, to my community, to my society?

Première lecture : He 9, 2-3.11-14
Frères, dans le sanctuaire de l’ancienne Alliance, une tente était disposée, la première, où se trouvaient le chandelier à sept branches et la table avec les pains de l’offrande ; c’est ce qu’on nomme le Saint. Derrière le second rideau, il y avait la tente appelée le Saint des Saints. Le Christ est venu, grand prêtre des biens à venir. Par la tente plus grande et plus parfaite, celle qui n’est pas œuvre de mains humaines et n’appartient pas à cette création, il est entré une fois pour toutes dans le sanctuaire, en répandant, non pas le sang de boucs et de jeunes taureaux, mais son propre sang. De cette manière, il a obtenu une libération définitive. S’il est vrai qu’une simple aspersion avec le sang de boucs et de taureaux, et de la cendre de génisse, sanctifie ceux qui sont souillés, leur rendant la pureté de la chair, le sang du Christ fait bien davantage, car le Christ, poussé par l’Esprit éternel, s’est offert lui-même à Dieu comme une victime sans défaut ; son sang purifiera donc notre conscience des actes qui mènent à la mort, pour que nous puissions rendre un culte au Dieu vivant.

La foule pourrait empêcher le serviteur de Dieu de refaire ses forces. Il est bien d’en être conscient. Il y a des moments où le repos est nécessaire pour plus d’efficacité dans la mission. Il y a des situations qui obligent un pasteur à se reposer devient une obligation. Les foules ne prennent pas la mesure des situations ou des événements. Voilà pourquoi, il importe de trouver des moments, après des activités pastorales intenses, pour se refaire des forces, prendre un repas équilibré et se reposer. Le partenariat avec notre santé en pastorale est fondamental pour plus de zèle et de dynamisme.

Frères, le service qui revient à notre grand prêtre se distingue d’autant plus que lui est médiateur d’une alliance meilleure, reposant sur de meilleures promesses. En effet, si la première Alliance avait été irréprochable, il n’y aurait pas eu lieu d’en chercher une deuxième. Or, c’est bien un reproche que Dieu fait à son peuple quand il dit : Voici venir des jours, dit le Seigneur, où je conclurai avec la maison d’Israël et avec la maison de Juda une alliance nouvelle. Ce ne sera pas comme l’Alliance que j’ai faite avec leurs pères, le jour où je les ai pris par la main pour les faire sortir du pays d’Égypte : eux ne sont pas restés dans mon Alliance ; alors moi, je les ai délaissés, dit le Seigneur. Mais voici quelle sera l’Alliance que j’établirai avec la maison d’Israël quand ces jours-là seront passés, dit le Seigneur. Quand je leur donnerai mes lois, je les inscrirai dans leur pensée et sur leurs cœurs. Je serai leur Dieu, et ils seront mon peuple. Ils n’auront plus à instruire chacun son concitoyen ni chacun son frère en disant : « Apprends à connaître le Seigneur ! » Car tous me connaîtront, des plus petits jusqu’aux plus grands. Je serai indulgent pour leurs fautes, je ne me rappellerai plus leurs péchés. En ce temps-là, Jésus gravit la montagne, et il appela ceux qu’il voulait. Donc, il établit les Douze : Pierre – c’est le nom qu’il donna à Simon –, Jacques, fils de Zébédée, et Jean, le frère de Jacques – il leur donna le nom de « Boanerguès », c’est-à-dire : « Fils du tonnerre » –, André, Philippe, Barthélemy, Matthieu, Thomas, Jacques, fils d’Alphée, Thaddée, Simon le Zélote, et Judas Iscariote, celui-là même qui le livra.
Seigneur, accorde-nous la grâce de vraiment participer à cette eucharistie; Car chaque fois qu’est célébré ce sacrifice en mémorial, c’est l’ouvre de notre Rédemption qui s’accomplit. Par Jésus.

Pénètre-nous, Seigneur, de ton esprit de charité, Afin que soient unis par ton amour ceux que tu as nourris d’un même pain. Par Jésus. Le sabbat est pour le bien de l’homme et la Gloire de Dieu. Jésus agit toujours dans le sens du Bien voulu par Dieu. Rien ne le dissuade dans cette optique (cf. Mc 3, 1-6). «Agir bien», voilà le critère de ses décisions quotidiennes ; il n’y a jamais failli: «Il est passé partout en bienfaiteur» (Ac 10, 38). Le mal n’a aucunement eu raison de lui. Il va vaincre même la mort, implacable ennemi des hommes. Celui qui vit dans la Volonté divine ne sera jamais déçu, ainsi qu’il est dit dans les Ecritures: «L’Espérance ne trompe pas» (Rm 5, 5). Comme l’humble David sorti victorieux de l’offensive du Géant Goliath (1S 17, 32-51), tout fidèle de Dieu sera comblé au-delà de ses attentes.
Jésus appelle à Lui ceux qu’il veut. La configuration de ses apôtres est faite en sorte qu’il y ait un publicain, un zélote, un collecteur d’impôt, des pêcheurs, etc. Avec le Christ, des tendances religieuses radicalement opposées se retrouvent désormais unies. C’est en son nom qu’un Simon de tendance religieuse fondamentaliste anti-romaine peut vivre avec un Matthieu au service de l’empire colonial. La communauté des apôtres avec le Christ est interculturelle. Elle fait asseoir à la même table des cultures religieuses distinctes. Mais elle leur fait parler un unique langage : celui de l’amour.
