Saint Wolfgang of Regensburg
BVM
He was bishop of Regensburg in Bavaria from Christmas 972 until his death. He is a saint of the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches (canonized in 1052). He is regarded as one of the three great German saints of the 10th century, the other two being Saint Ulrich and Saint Conrad of Constance.

Meditation
Throughout history, some Christians have promoted Jesus with the wrong motives. For example, some proclaimed the gospel to make Paul’s “imprisonment even harsher” (Phil 1:17). Some thought that by enthusiastically proclaiming Jesus they would provoke the Romans to torture or kill Paul who was in prison on death row. This is possibly one of the most perverse motives for spreading the gospel ever acted upon. However, Paul’s reaction to this was: “ Christ is proclaimed; and that makes me happy; and I shall continue being happy, because I know this will help to save me, thanks to your prayers and to the help which will be given to me by the Spirit of Jesus. “ (Phil 1:18). Paul does not intend to encourage evil motives but rather to declare that these are overshadowed by the proclamation of the gospel.

Au 3e siècle, Quentin, romain, partit pour la Gaule avec saint Lucien de Beauvais et plusieurs compagnons pour évangéliser cette région du Beauvaisis et de la Picardie. Son succès provoqua la colère du préfet romain Rictiovare qui l’arrêta à Soissons, lui fit subir interrogatoires et supplices, le fit décapiter.

St Marcellus (d. 300)
A centurion from Tingis (Morocco), he not only refused to worship Roman gods but also threw down his soldier’s insignia in front of the legion’s standards. As he did this, he proclaimed his Christian identity, his allegiance to the Lord and rejected the worship of gods made of stone and wood. He was put to death by the sword around the year 300.

Then he said to them, ‘Which of you here, if his son falls into a well, or his ox, will not pull him out on a sabbath day without hesitation?’ And to this they could find no answer.

Meditation
The point of the story narrated in today’s gospel is that compassion and mercy transcend the law and fulfill it. By His action, Jesus declares this to be the standard underlying the very purpose of the law. In contrast to the Pharisaic vision of subservience to it, our Lord provides an entirely different vision, giving priority over the law to the compassion and mercy which He gave and asked others to give throughout His public ministry. Like Jesus did with the man with dropsy, we need to see the suffering with compassionate eyes and creatively develop ways to help them as much as we can with God’s merciful hand. Today’s gospel, finally, doesn’t ask whether something is legal or illegal. It speaks to us as obedient sons and daughters of God who is love, who want to follow in our Lord’s footsteps, and who therefore want to be loving, caring, merciful, and forgiving. That is what God’s law in both the Old and New Testament is all about.

Prenant la parole, Jésus s’adressa aux docteurs de la Loi et aux pharisiens pour leur demander : « Est-il permis, oui ou non, de faire une guérison le jour du sabbat ? » Ils gardèrent le silence. Tenant alors le malade, Jésus le guérit et le laissa aller. Puis il leur dit : « Si l’un de vous a un fils ou un bœuf qui tombe dans un puits, ne va- t-il pas aussitôt l’en retirer, même le jour du sabbat ? » Et ils furent incapables de trouver une réponse.

St Colman MacDuagh (632)
He was the son of an Irish chieftain. He was educated at Saint Enda’s monastery in the Aran Islands. Thereafter he was a recluse, living in prayer fasting. With the King of Connaught he founded the monastery of Kilmacduagh which he governed as abbot-bishop.

Meditation
In the Christian life we battle against spiritual rulers and authorities (the powerful evil forces of fallen angels headed by Satan). To withstand their attacks, we must depend on God’s strength and grace and use every piece of his armour. Paul is not only giving this counsel to the church, the body of Christ but to all individuals within the church. The whole body needs to be armed. As you do battle against “the powers of this dark world”, fight with the strength of the church whose power comes from the Holy Spirit. Evil forces are also visible in structural evil. We should equally strive to overcome this.

Sts Simon and Jude, Apostles
Jude, also called Thaddaeus, is the apostle who at the Last Supper asked the Lord why he showed himself only to the disciples and not to the world. For many centuries he was scarcely venerated because people confused him with Judas Iscariot. He is the patron saint of lost and desperate causes.
Simon is eleventh in the list of the twelve Apostles. He is known as Simon the Zealot, but nothing else is known about him. His other name of “Simon Cananaeus” simply adapts another Hebrew word for “zeal” and has nothing to do with the town of Cana..

O God, who by the blessed Apostles have brought us to acknowledge your name, graciously grant, through the intercession of Saints Simon and Jude, that the Church may constantly grow by increase of the peoples who believe in you. Meditation
The Catholic Church is maligned in many arenas. Our leaders are scorned in the media and hammered by the general public. Dissent from within the Church also plagues our leaders. Failures of Church leaders are trumpeted from every public forum, while their virtuous acts receive little notice. This is not much different from the time of Jesus. The apostles were “men of no standing” (Acts 4:13). They were “a spectacle to the universe,” “fools on Christ’s account,” “the world’s refuse, the scum of all” (1 Cor 4:9, 10, 13). Throughout history, Church leaders have had their failings. Many apologists note that the fact the Catholic Church still exists is proof that God leads the Church, for no institution with our failings and weaknesses could stand if God was not holding it up. Rejoice that you are resting upon the shoulders of the apostles and the bishops, the successors of the apostles.

Saints Simon et Jude, apôtres
Le surnom de zélote, donné à Simon, indique dans quel parti l’appel de Jésus a été le chercher : il était l’un de ces violents qui voulaient rétablir le royaume d’Israël en soulevant le peuple de Dieu contre les occupants païens. Devenu l’un des Douze, il apprendra de son Maître les chemins de l’humble douceur qui mènent par la croix au Royaume de Dieu. La violence du zélote fera place à la force du témoin du Christ crucifié.
Quant à Jude, appelé aussi Thaddée, la question qu’il pose à Jésus après la Cène montre qu’il attendait un Messie dont la manifestation s’imposerait à l’univers. Jésus, dans sa réponse, lui apprend et nous apprend comment il se manifeste : à travers ceux qui croient en son amour et y répondent par un amour fidèle ; en eux, il est présent avec son Père.

Frères,
vous n’êtes plus des étrangers ni des gens de passage,

vous êtes membres de la famille de Dieu,
car vous avez été intégrés dans la construction
qui a pour fondations les Apôtres et les prophètes ;
et la pierre angulaire, c’est le Christ Jésus lui-même.

He was abbot of Meath and later came to Iona. He died in 548 and his grave on Iona was greatly revered. As a result the Vikings chose Otteran, the titular guardian of their ancestors’ ashes, as patron of the city of Waterford in 1096. He is now patron saint of the Diocese of Waterford and Lismore.

Give way to one another in obedience to Christ. Husbands should love their wives just as Christ loved the Church and sacrificed himself for her to make her holy. Meditation
Submitting to another person is an often misunderstood concept. It does not mean becoming dormant. Christ, at whose name “every knee must bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth” (Phil 2:10), submitted his will to his Father and we know Christ by following hs example. When we submit to God we become more willing to obey his commands to submit to others, that is, to subordinate our rights to theirs. In a marriage relationship both husband and wife are called to submit. For the wife it means following her husband’s leadership in Christ. For the husband it means putting aside his own interest in order to care for his wife.

Eh bien ! puisque l’Église se soumet au Christ, qu’il en soit toujours de même pour les femmes à l’égard de leur mari. Vous, les hommes, aimez votre femme à l’exemple du Christ : il a aimé l’Église, il s’est livré lui-même pour elle, afin de la rendre sainte en la purifiant par le bain de l’eau baptismale, accompagné d’une parole ; il voulait se la présenter à lui-même, cette Église, resplendissante, sans tache, ni ride, ni rien de tel ; il la voulait sainte et immaculée. C’est de la même façon que les maris doivent aimer leur femme : comme leur propre corps. Celui qui aime sa femme s’aime soi-même. Jamais personne n’a méprisé son propre corps : au contraire, on le nourrit, on en prend soin. C’est ce que fait le Christ pour l’Église, parce que nous sommes les membres de son corps. Comme dit l’Écriture : À cause de cela, l’homme quittera son père et sa mère, il s’attachera à sa femme, et tous deux ne feront plus qu’un. Ce mystère est grand : je le dis en référence au Christ et à l’Église. Pour en revenir à vous, chacun doit aimer sa propre femme comme lui-même, et la femme doit avoir du respect pour son mari.
