St Chad (672)
He became abbot of Lastingham and was chosen to be bishop of Northumbria, but St Wilfrid contested his appointment, and Chad obediently withdrew. He was then sent as bishop to Mercia, He died at Lichfield on 2 March 672 and was immediately revered as a saint because of the holiness of his life, his outstanding humility, and his dedication to preaching of the Gospel.

But the synagogue official was indignant because Jesus had healed on the sabbath, and he addressed the people present. ‘There are six days’ he said ‘when work is to be done. Come and be healed on one of those days and not on the sabbath.’ But the Lord answered him. ‘Hypocrites!’ he said ‘Is there one of you who does not untie his ox or his donkey from the manger on the sabbath and take it out for watering? And this woman, a daughter of Abraham whom Satan has held bound these eighteen years – was it not right to untie her bonds on the sabbath day?’ When he said this, all his adversaries were covered with confusion, and all the people were overjoyed at all the wonders he worked.

Meditation
Rules are an important part of any religion or society. A wise Rabbi once said: “Everyone needs rules. If you want to see a miserable teenager find one who has no boundaries imposed on him.” But rules generally only make sense if one references their purpose. Otherwise they become entirely human artifacts that exist only for their own sake. Rules as understood and applied by the religious leader in the Gospel are entirely of the flesh; they do nothing to help us achieve the life of the spirit. The synagogue official’s error was that he lost sight of the purpose of the rule. The purpose of the rule forbidding Sabbath work was to allow everyone to glorify God at least one day a week. But understanding it as he did, it became a rule that would actually prevent one from glorifying God as Jesus did by healing the sick woman. As humans we all struggle with rules. We break and bend them, often for selfish reasons. But the greatest error is entirely losing sight of their purpose.

Oui, cherchez à imiter Dieu, puisque vous êtes ses enfants bien-aimés. Vivez dans l’amour, comme le Christ nous a aimés et s’est livré lui-même pour nous, s’offrant en sacrifice à Dieu, comme un parfum d’agréable odeur. Comme il convient aux fidèles, la débauche, l’impureté sous toutes ses formes et la soif de posséder sont des choses qu’on ne doit même plus évoquer chez vous ; pas davantage de propos grossiers, stupides ou scabreux – tout cela est déplacé – mais qu’il y ait plutôt des actions de grâce. Sachez-le bien : ni les débauchés, ni les dépravés, ni les profiteurs – qui sont de vrais idolâtres – ne reçoivent d’héritage dans le royaume du Christ et de Dieu ; ne laissez personne vous égarer par de vaines paroles. Tout cela attire la colère de Dieu sur ceux qui désobéissent. N’ayez donc rien de commun avec ces gens-là. Autrefois, vous étiez ténèbres ; maintenant, dans le Seigneur, vous êtes lumière ; conduisez-vous comme des enfants de lumière.

- Heureux est l’homme qui n’entre pas au conseil des méchants, qui ne suit pas le chemin des pécheurs, ne siège pas avec ceux qui ricanent, mais se plaît dans la loi du Seigneur et murmure sa loi jour et nuit !
- Il est comme un arbre planté près d’un ruisseau, qui donne du fruit en son temps, et jamais son feuillage ne meurt ; tout ce qu’il entreprend réussira. Tel n’est pas le sort des méchants.
- Mais ils sont comme la paille balayée par le vent. Le Seigneur connaît le chemin des justes, mais le chemin des méchants se perdra.

En ce temps-là, Jésus était en train d’enseigner dans une synagogue, le jour du sabbat. Voici qu’il y avait là une femme, possédée par un esprit qui la rendait infirme depuis dix-huit ans ; elle était toute courbée et absolument incapable de se redresser. Quand Jésus la vit, il l’interpella et lui dit : « Femme, te voici délivrée de ton infirmité. » Et il lui imposa les mains. À l’instant même elle redevint droite et rendait gloire à Dieu. Alors le chef de la synagogue, indigné de voir Jésus faire une guérison le jour du sabbat, prit la parole et dit à la foule : « Il y a six jours pour travailler ; venez donc vous faire guérir ces jours-là, et non pas le jour du sabbat. » Le Seigneur lui répliqua : « Hypocrites ! Chacun de vous, le jour du sabbat, ne détache-t-il pas de la mangeoire son bœuf ou son âne pour le mener boire ? Alors cette femme, une fille d’Abraham, que Satan avait liée voici dix-huit ans, ne fallait-il pas la délivrer de ce lien le jour du sabbat ? » À ces paroles de Jésus, tous ses adversaires furent remplis de honte, et toute la foule était dans la joie à cause de toutes les actions éclatantes qu’il faisait.

Meditation
In the Gospel of today, Jesus unites two key passages in the Old Testament to give a smooth synthesis of LOVE: “Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God is one Lord, and you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul and with all your might” (Deut 6:4-5) and “You shall love your neighbour as yourself” (Lev 19:18; cf. Mk 12:29-31). How do we love God? By keeping his commandments found in the Sacred Scriptures especially as resumed in the Decalogue or Ten Commandments. But how do we love our neighbour? Still found in the New Testament, particularly in Mt 25, we can follow what the church calls the Corporal Works of mercy : To feed the hungry; To give drink to the thirsty; To clothe the naked; To harbour the harbourless; To visit the sick; To ransom the captive; To bury the dead. Jesus also teaches in the Parable of the Good Samaritan by encouraging us to love everyone, especially those who are in need, and even our enemies. After such beautiful readings in today’s liturgy, we are challenged to put this love into practice. This recommendation can be our litmus test: make a special effort to love the person whom you find it difficult to love.

Pour mieux annoncer le Christ, ils se dévouèrent d’abord à la tâche de cordonniers. Ils n’y avait pas meilleurs qu’eux dans le domaine. Pendant qu’ils travaillaient, on avait plaisir à les entendre parler du Christ. Ils donnèrent d’ailleurs leur vie pour lui jusqu’au sang.
Dédicace des églises dont on ignore la date de consécration
Les maisons de pierre où se rassemblent les chrétiens pour entendre la parole de Dieu et célébrer l’eucharistie rappellent que les communautés chrétiennes doivent être des pierres vivantes du vrai Temple de Dieu : l’unique Eglise de Jésus Christ.

Saint Antony Mary Claret (1807 – 1870)

He was born in 1807 and ordained priest in 1835. His uncompromising preaching raised hostility against him. In 1849 he founded a missionary institute of priests: Missionary Sons of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (Claretian Missionaries). He antagonized the slave owners, and attempts were made on his life. In 1868, revolution caused him to go into exile in France, where he died in 1870.

First reading: Ephesians 4:7-16
Each one of us has been given his own share of grace, given as Christ allotted it. It was said that he would: When he ascended to the height, he captured prisoners, he gave gifts to men. The one who rose higher than all the heavens to fill all things is none other than the one who descended. And to some, his gift was that they should be apostles; to some, prophets; to some, evangelists; to some, pastors and teachers; so that the saints together make a unity in the work of service, building up the body of Christ. Grant, O Lord, we pray, that, benefiting from participation in heavenly things, we may be helped by what you give in this present age and prepared for the gifts that are eternal. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
The gospel offers the parable of the fig tree. The owner saw the tree as useless since it hadn’t produced fruit. But the gardener begged him to spare the tree so that he could spend more time to attend to the tree’s needs of nourishment and care. Is this not how God views us? Perhaps in others’ or our own view, we are discouraged…we give up hope of growing into God’s spirit and we are ready to throw in the towel. We are tired – we don’t know where to turn for hope as we struggle with our worries of the day. But God says, ‘…no wait…perhaps with more care… you will bear fruit…become more of who you are and can be.’ We are in God’s spirit and God’s spirit is within us. But how do we work with the spirit of God? By not turning our back on the living/dynamic presence of the spirit? How do we assist others and ourselves to see that spirit Within? Of course, this is by breathing life into our sagging spirit to burn with God’s life.

Saint Antoine-Marie Claret
Doué d’énergie et de sens pratique, Antoine-Marie (1807-1870) fut un prédicateur infatigable et un écrivain religieux très influent dans sa Catalogne natale, puis aux Canaries, enfin à Cuba, où il fut archevêque de Santiago de 1859 à 1867. Son action en faveur des esclaves noirs lui attira la haine de ses oppresseurs, qui attentèrent quinze fois à sa vie. Choisi comme confesseur de la reine d’Espagne, il fut en butte à la calomnie. A la suite d’une révolution, il suivit la reine dans son exil en France et mourut à l’abbaye de Fontfroide. Saint Magloire ; saint Florentin
Formé à l’école monastique par saint Iltud et devenu moine, Magloire suivit saint Samson, fondateur de l’évêché de Dol, qui voulait passer en Armorique. Magloire fut même désigné par saint Samson comme son successeur à l’évêché. Mais au bout de trois ans, il abdiqua, gagné qu’il était par une vie d’ermitage.

1ère lecture : Ep 4, 7-16
Frères, à chacun d’entre nous, la grâce a été donnée selon la mesure du don fait par le Christ. C’est pourquoi l’Écriture dit : Il est monté sur la hauteur, il a capturé des captifs, il a fait des dons aux hommes. Que veut dire : Il est monté ? – Cela veut dire qu’il était d’abord descendu dans les régions inférieures de la terre. Et celui qui était descendu est le même qui est monté au-dessus de tous les cieux pour remplir l’univers. Et les dons qu’il a faits, ce sont les Apôtres, et aussi les prophètes, les évangélisateurs, les pasteurs et ceux qui enseignent. De cette manière, les fidèles sont organisés pour que les tâches du ministère soient accomplies et que se construise le corps du Christ, jusqu’à ce que nous parvenions tous ensemble à l’unité dans la foi et la pleine connaissance du Fils de Dieu, à l’état de l’Homme parfait, à la stature du Christ dans sa plénitude. Alors, nous ne serons plus comme des petits enfants, nous laissant secouer et mener à la dérive par tous les courants d’idées, au gré des hommes qui emploient la ruse pour nous entraîner dans l’erreur. Au contraire, en vivant dans la vérité de l’amour, nous grandirons pour nous élever en tout jusqu’à celui qui est la Tête, le Christ. Et par lui, dans l’harmonie et la cohésion, tout le corps poursuit sa croissance, grâce aux articulations qui le maintiennent, selon l’énergie qui est à la mesure de chaque membre. Ainsi le corps se construit dans l’amour.

- Quelle joie quand on m’a dit : « Nous irons à la maison du Seigneur ! » Maintenant notre marche prend fin devant tes portes, Jérusalem !

À quoi bon le laisser épuiser le ol ?” Mais le vigneron lui répondit : “Maître, laisse-le encore cette année, le temps que je bêche autour pour y mettre du fumier. Peut-être donnera-t-il du fruit à l’avenir. Sinon, tu le couperas.” »

Saint John of Capistrano (1386 – 1456)
He was born in Capistrano in the Abruzzi in 1386. He joined the Friars Minor and was ordained. John preached a crusade against the invading Turks in 1456 and took part in the battles that kept Christian Europe safe from Turkish invasion. He died of the Plague in 1456. He is the patron saint of military chaplains.

Meditation
Today’s gospel is clear in its teaching. We are directed to forgive each other and move on with our lives. If we are caught in the middle of a disagreement, Jesus says to stop and settle it right there. It doesn’t matter who is right or wrong – just settle it. Get that dissension out of the way so we can to be sent by him to serve. Why are we so reluctant? What will it cost us to forgive? What are we willing to do to put down the grudges we hold, the anger and fears and resentment, and ask Jesus for forgiveness for our stubbornness? Only in that place of healing can we see what we have been missing all along – Jesus standing in front of us, holding our face in his hands, telling us how much he loves and needs us.

Saint Jean de Capistran, prêtre
Gouverneur de Pérouse, Jean (1386-1456) a trente ans quand il entre chez les Franciscains. Prêtre en 1425, il parcourt l’Europe, y propageant la dévotion au Nom de Jésus. Il prêche la croisade qui enraye les progrès des Turcs, battus à Belgrade en 1456. Auparavant, il avait été au Concile de Florence où il avait amené les Arméniens en vue de l’union des Eglises séparées. A cette unité de l’Eglise, compromise par le grand schisme d’Occident, il travailla toute sa vie.

Saint John Paul II (1920-2005)
He became in 1964, Archbishop of Kraków and took part in the Second Vatican Council. On 16 October 1978 he was elected pope and took the name John Paul II. He is remembered for his exceptional apostolic zeal, particularly for families, young people and the sick. He departed peacefully in the Lord in 2005. He was canonized by Pope Francis on 27 April, the Second Sunday of Easter 2014.

Meditation
Jesus has “come to bring fire to the earth”. He begins this by dismantling associations held together by factors which are not in accordance with His will. Do you have mixed motives in your relations? Is your family staying together in pure love, or are there other factors? Cooperate with Jesus as He picks out any sins, selfishness, or self-deception in your family. Then ask Jesus to give to your family gifts in keeping with the riches of His glory, interior strength through the working of His Spirit, His indwelling, and charity as its root and foundation. After this, you and your family will be able to grasp fully, with all the holy ones, the breadth and length and height and depth of Christ’s love, and experience this love which surpasses all knowledge, so that you may attain the fullness of God Himself.
