St John of Bridlington (1319 – 1379)
John Twenge was born near Bridlington, in Yorkshire. In his lifetime he enjoyed a reputation for great holiness and for miraculous powers. After his death the fame of the miracles wrought by his intercession spread rapidly through the land, and he was canonized by Pope Boniface IX in 1404.

First reading : Ephesians 3:2-12
You have probably heard how I have been entrusted by God with the grace he meant for you, and that it was by a revelation that I was given the knowledge of the mystery, as I have just described it very shortly. If you read my word you will have some idea of the depths that I see in the mystery of Christ. This that has now been revealed through the Spirit to his holy apostles and prophets was unknown to any men in past generations; it means that pagans now share the same inheritance, that they are parts of the same body, and that the same promise has been made to them, in Jesus Christ, through the gospel. I have been made the servant of that gospel by a gift of grace from God who gave it to me by his own power. I, who am less than the least of all the saints have been entrusted with this special grace, not only of proclaiming to the pagans the infinite treasure of Christ but also of explaining how the mystery is to be dispensed. Through all the ages, this has been kept hidden in God, the creator of everything. Why? So that the Sovereignties and Powers should learn only now, through the Church, how comprehensive God’s wisdom really is, exactly according to the plan which he had had from all eternity in Christ Jesus our Lord. This is why we are bold enough to approach God in complete confidence, through our faith in him.

Meditation
“When a man has had a great deal given him, a great deal will be demanded of him; when a man has had a great deal given him on trust, even more will be expected of him.” Jesus spoke the above words to Peter and the apostles. We might not be expected to perform the works of Peter, but none of us is off the hook when it comes to serving the Lord. We have received the sacraments of Baptism, Communion, and Confirmation. We have heard the message of salvation. We have received Jesus into our very bodies in the Eucharist. We have been privileged to read and hear the sacred Scriptures, revealed directly from God in heaven. We have received the Holy Spirit and His gifts. Look how much we have received! God would not be just if He did not expect a fruitful harvest in return for His freely given gifts.

1ère lecture : Ep 3, 2-12
Frères, vous avez appris, je pense, en quoi consiste la grâce que Dieu m’a donnée pour vous : par révélation, il m’a fait connaître le mystère, comme je vous l’ai déjà écrit brièvement. En me lisant, vous pouvez vous rendre compte de l’intelligence que j’ai du mystère du Christ. Ce mystère n’avait pas été porté à la connaissance des hommes des générations passées, comme il a été révélé maintenant à ses saints Apôtres et aux prophètes, dans l’Esprit. Ce mystère, c’est que toutes les nations sont associées au même héritage, au même corps, au partage de la même promesse, dans le Christ Jésus,par l’annonce de l’Évangile. De cet Évangile je suis devenu ministre par le don de la grâce que Dieu m’a accordée par l’énergie de sa puissance. À moi qui suis vraiment le plus petit de tous les fidèles, la grâce a été donnée d’annoncer aux nations l’insondable richesse du Christ, et de mettre en lumière pour tous le contenu du mystère qui était caché depuis toujours en Dieu, le créateur de toutes choses ; ainsi, désormais, les Puissances célestes elles-mêmes connaissent, grâce à l’Église, les multiples aspects de la Sagesse de Dieu. C’est le projet éternel que Dieu a réalisé dans le Christ Jésus notre Seigneur. Et notre foi au Christ nous donne l’assurance nécessaire pour accéder auprès de Dieu en toute confiance.

Heureux ce serviteur que son maître, en arrivant, trouvera en train d’agir ainsi ! Vraiment, je vous le déclare : il l’établira sur tous ses biens. These two catechists died for their faith on 20 October 1918 at Paimol in Northern Uganda. They were still very young – Daudi was 16, while Jildo was only 12. During the persecutions of Christians, they were dragged outside their hut and killed for the sole reason of teaching the Christian faith.

Do not forget that you had no Christ and were excluded from membership of Israel, aliens with no part in the covenants with their Promise; you were immersed in this world, without hope and without God. For he is the peace between us, and has made the two into one and broken down the barrier which used to keep them apart, actually destroying in his own person the hostility caused by the rules and decrees of the Law. This was to create one single New Man in himself out of the two of them and by restoring peace through the cross, to unite them both in a single Body and reconcile them with God: in his own person he killed the hostility. Meditation
“I tell you solemnly, he will put on an apron, sit them down at table and wait on them.” This verse from the gospel is quite striking. We have an incredible image of a master returning home tired from a trip who takes it upon himself to set a table and wait on the servants instead of having the vigilant servants take care of his needs. This would be the kind of master that one would want to serve. How incredible it is that this is the kind of master that Jesus is. This story reminds us of the visible symbol of Jesus as servant during the washing of the feet before the passion. This reminds us too of the kenosis in Philippians 2: 5-11. The First reading from the Letter to the Ephesians reminds us of just how far Jesus was willing to go in his service to us. Far beyond the master who serves his servants a meal out of gratitude, Jesus makes us citizens and joint heirs and offers each of us the gift of peace with God. Knowing that we have this peace, the psalm takes on a deeper meaning. We can reflect on the promises of peace knowing that we have access to salvation and peace and that we “all grow into one holy temple in the Lord” and “are being built into a house where God lives, in the Spirit”, where surely we shall see kindness and truth meet and justice and peace kiss. Today we can reflect on the awesome privileges we have through the incredible love that Jesus has for us and express our gratitude.

Sts John de Brébeuf, Isaac Jogues and Companions
Between 1642 and 1649 these eight members of the Society of Jesus, who had travelled to North America to preach the true faith, were killed by the native Huron and Iroquois tribes after horrible tortures. Isaac Jogues died on October, 18 1647, and John de Brébeuf on March 16, 1648.

Meditation
The man in today’s gospel reading decided to save for the future. He said to himself: “You have blessings in reserve for years to come. Relax! Eat heartily, drink well. Enjoy yourself” (Lk 12:19). In today’s culture, we would call him a wise man, “but God said to him, ‘You fool!’” (Lk 12:20). Unless we receive a special revelation as did Joseph (Gn 41:35), we are not to save our money and possessions; rather, we are to distribute them. This comes as a terrible shock to a society full of savings and current accounts. Every culture has its strengths and weaknesses, its insights and blind spots. Every culture clashes with the gospel in some areas. Jesus is a sign of contradiction (Lk 2:34). If we are true followers of Jesus, we are not trapped in our culture, but by grace we are freed to see and accept the full truth of the gospel.

Saints Jean de Brébeuf et Isaac Jogues, prêtres, et leurs compagnons, martyrs
Parmi les apôtres qui évangélisèrent le Canada, huit jésuites français, en mission chez les Iroquois et les Hurons, furent martyrisés entre 1642 et 1649 Isaac Jogues (1607-1446), déjà torturé une première fois en 1642, voulut retourner chez les Iroquois : en 1646, un tomahawk lui brisa le crâne ; avec lui mourut Jean de lande, un laïc. En 1649, Jean de Brébeuf fut atrocement mutilé, puis mis à mort. Telles furent les semailles de l’Eglise en Amérique du Nord.
Saint Paul de la Croix, prêtre
D’abord soldat, Paul Danei (1694-1775) se retire en 1720 dans un ermitage en Toscane. Ce contemplatif, ordonné prêtre en 1726, parcourt l’Italie pour prêcher des missions. Il fonde l’Institut des Passionistes dont le but est de faire aimer le Christ crucifié en prêchant sa Passion. La règle, extrêmement dure, met l’accent sur le renoncement et la pauvreté totale. Le saint mourut à Rome, épuisé d’austérités, la maladie et les travaux apostoliques.

Avec plusieurs autres missionnaires jésuites, il fut cruellement mis à mort par les Iroquois et les Hurons alors qu’ils leur apportaient la paix et la liberté de l’Evangile. Ils ont été canonisés ensemble en 1930 et déclarés patrons secondaires du Canada.

Et nous aussi, nous étions tous de ceux-là, quand nous vivions suivant les convoitises de notre chair, cédant aux caprices de la chair et des pensées, nous qui étions, de par nous-mêmes, voués à la colère comme tous les autres. Mais Dieu est riche en miséricorde ; à cause du grand amour dont il nous a aimés, nous qui étions des morts par suite de nos fautes, il nous a donné la vie avec le Christ : c’est bien par grâce que vous êtes sauvés. Avec lui, il nous a ressuscités et il nous a fait siéger aux cieux, dans le Christ Jésus. Il a voulu ainsi montrer, au long des âges futurs, la richesse surabondante de sa grâce, par sa bonté pour nous dans le Christ Jésus. C’est bien par la grâce que vous êtes sauvés, et par le moyen de la foi. Cela ne vient pas de vous, c’est le don de Dieu. Cela ne vient pas des actes : personne ne peut en tirer orgueil. C’est Dieu qui nous a faits, il nous a créés dans le Christ Jésus, en vue de la réalisation d’œuvres bonnes qu’il a préparées d’avance pour que nous les pratiquions.

Meditation
“Give back to Caesar what belongs to Caesar – and to God what belongs to God.’ This famous statement has been interpreted in so many ways. It is often cited as a reason to drive religious authorities from “politics”. Those who still hang on to traditional practices and rituals, and want to justify their acts cite this passage too. Rulers use this to keep church authority subservient to that of the nation. Some pertinent questions arise: Must we obey all the laws of our nation? When there are laws that transgress God’s Law or our Christian values, are we obliged to obey them? In effect, what belongs to God? Things become more complicated when we read from Saint Paul that “Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. Therefore, whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment. (Romans 13:1-4). This passage makes it abundantly clear that we are to obey the government God places over us. At the same time we must give to God what belongs to him. In the Acts 5:27-29, Peter and the other apostles insisted that : “We must obey God rather than men!” How do we solve this solves the puzzle! Thomas Gumbleton’s words say it all! ‘Everything belongs to God, even Caesar’s coins’.

Saint Luc, évangéliste
Ce laïc était médecin. Ami de Paul, il l’accompagna durant une partie de ses voyages. La tradition lui attribue le troisième évangile et les Actes des Apôtres. Ces deux livres forment les volets d’un diptyque. L’Evangile présente Jésus comme le Sauveur universel, et sa vie comme une montée vers Jérusalem où, par sa mort et sa résurrection, il accomplit sa mission de salut. Dans les Actes des Apôtres, l’Esprit Saint, envoyé par le Christ glorifié, provoque la diffusion de l’Evangile à partir de Jérusalem et l’expansion d’une Eglise ouverte à tous, aux païens comme aux Juifs. La personnalité de Luc se révèle peut-être à travers son œuvre dont les thèmes dominants sont la miséricorde et l’amour des pauvres, la prière et la joie.

St Ignatius of Antioch (- 107)
He was the second bishop of Antioch after St Peter. He was arrested, condemned to death and transported to Rome to be thrown to the wild beasts in the arena. He was martyred in 107 and his feast was already being celebrated on this day in fourth-century Antioch.

Meditation
Paul prayed for the Christians in Ephesus to know God better. How do you get to know someone? Is it by reading biographical information or historical data about him? That surely will help you know a lot ‘about’ that person but it won’t enable you to ‘know’ him. If you want to know someone you have to spend time with that person, there is no shortcut. Study the word of God especially the gospels to see what Jesus was like on earth two thousand years ago. Go on your knees in prayer to understand the profundity of his majesty. Spend time with him before the Blessed Sacrament to appreciate his abiding presence. Personal knowledge of Christ will change your life.

Saint Ignace d’Antioche, évêque et martyr
L’historien Eusèbe écrit, au début du 4e siècle : ‘’Ignace avait été élu évêque d’Antioche et était le second successeur de Pierre. On dit qu’il avait été envoyé de Syrie à Rome pour y être dévoré par les bêtes à cause du témoignage pour le Christ. Il fit ce voyage à travers l’Asie(…). Etant à Smyrne, où se trouvait Polycarpe, il écrivit une lettre à l’Eglise d’Ephèse, une autre à l’Eglise de Magnésie, etc.’’ Martyrisé vers 107, Ignace mérita d’être, comme il l’avait souhaité, ‘’le froment de Dieu, moulu par les dents des bêtes, pour devenir le pain immaculé du Christ’’.

Si tu retiens les fautes, Seigneur, qui donc subsistera? Mais près de toi se trouve le pardon, Dieu fidèle.

Frères, ayant entendu parler de la foi que vous avez dans le Seigneur Jésus, et de votre amour pour tous les fidèles, je ne cesse pas de rendre grâce, quand je fais mémoire de vous dans mes prières : que le Dieu de notre Seigneur Jésus Christ, le Père dans sa gloire, vous donne un esprit de sagesse qui vous le révèle et vous le fasse vraiment connaître. Qu’il ouvre à sa lumière les yeux de votre cœur, pour que vous sachiez quelle espérance vous ouvre son appel, la gloire sans prix de l’héritage que vous partagez avec les fidèles, et quelle puissance incomparable il déploie pour nous, les croyants : c’est l’énergie, la force, la vigueur qu’il a mise en œuvre dans le Christ quand il l’a ressuscité d’entre les morts et qu’il l’a fait asseoir à sa droite dans les cieux. Il l’a établi au-dessus de tout être céleste : Principauté, Souveraineté, Puissance et Domination, au-dessus de tout nom que l’on puisse nommer, non seulement dans le monde présent mais aussi dans le monde à venir. Il a tout mis sous ses pieds et, le plaçant plus haut que tout, il a fait de lui la tête de l’Église qui est son corps, et l’Église, c’est l’accomplissement total du Christ, lui que Dieu comble totalement de sa plénitude.
