St Margaret Mary Alacoque (1647 – 1690)
She joined the Visitation Sisters at Paray-le-Monial. She made rapid progress along the way of perfection and was given mystical visions as a result of which she worked hard to institute devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus in the Church.

Meditation
In our Gospel today, Jesus vehemently condemns the hypocrisy of the Pharisees, that is, their striving to appear before others to be perfect, whereas they are not so. They, like their ancestors who had persecuted and killed the prophets, would do the same to Jesus. Jesus, however, stays unfazed by their plans; we too, would do well not to be frightened of those who can destroy our mortal life but can do nothing more. What is most important, is to be afraid of the one who has power to judge and settle our eternal destiny. Jesus says this, not to intimidate anyone. Rather, his wish is to make everyone trust in God and strive to live in God’s presence.

Sainte Edwige, religieuse
Bavaroise, épouse d’Henri 1er, duc de Pologne, Edwige (vers 1174-1243) fut mère de six enfants. Puis elle décidevv, en accord avec son mari, de vivre désormais dans la continence. Elle était la protectrice des pauvres et des prisonniers. Fidèle à ses devoirs de mère et de princesse, elle le fut aussi à toutes les observances monastiques dans l’abbaye cistercienne de Trebnitz, où, devenue veuve, elle entra cinq ans avant sa mort.
Sainte Marguerite-Marie Alacoque
Le 27 décembre 1673, une religieuse visitandine de Paray-le-Monial (Bourgogne) eut la révélation de l’amour qui jaillit du cœur du Christ. Marguerite-Marie (1647-1690) reçut aussi la mission de diffuser cette révélation. Elle y fut aidée par le Père jésuite Claude de La Colombière. Le développement de cette dévotion contribua à délivrer l’Eglise de l’esprit janséniste, et, surtout, rappela aux chrétiens quelle confiance ils doivent avoir envers l’amour infini que le Père leur manifeste en Jésus christ.
Bienheureuse Marie-Marguerite d’Youville (au Canada)
La fondatrice des Sœurs de la Charité, dites ‘’Sœurs grises de Montréal’’, est une de ces ‘’femmes admirables qui ont fait au Canada la force de la famille chrétienne, pépinière des vocations’’ (Jean XXIII). Marie-Marguerite (1701-1771) fut en effet une mère de six enfants, dont deux devinrent prêtres. Veuve après neuf ans de mariage, elle se consacra à leur éducation, tout en accueillant chez elle nombre de malades et de déshérités. Elle dirigea jusqu’à sa mort l’Hôpital général de Montréal.

St Teresa of Ávila (1515 – 1582)
She was born in Ávila in Spain and entered the Carmelite convent there at the age of 20. St Teresa is an outstanding example of how the contemplative life can well up and overflow into action. She wrote much on the subject of contemplative prayer and her writings are still standard works today. She was declared a Doctor of the Church by Pope Paul VI in 1970.

Meditation
Paul’s letter to the Ephesians is useful for both understanding God’s concern towards us and living our daily Christian lives. In effect, from the beginning of creation, God destined that humans be God’s children in His Son Jesus Christ. There is no space for humans outside this design or outside this relationship with Jesus Christ. The death and resurrection of Christ in order to liberate humans from their sins is part of this design. This is what Christians should principally believe in, meditate upon and never lose sight of, in order to lead a good life, cherishing all the while, God’s design with sentiments of gratitude. God’s plan is to “bring all things in the heavens and on earth into one under the headship of Christ.” Jesus promised: “And I — once I am lifted up from earth — will draw all men to Myself” (Jn 12:32). We must let ourselves be drawn to Jesus and then be in right relationship with Him, the Head of His body.

Sainte Thérèse d’Avila, vierge et docteur de l’Eglise
La première femme à recevoir le titre de docteur de l’Eglise (1970) est une mystique castillane dont les écrit tracent un chemin sûr à ceux qui veulent progresser dans la prière et la perfection chrétienne. En livrant les secrets de son expérience faite d’un amour ardent, allié à un profond équilibre, Thérèse (1515-1582) révélait aussi où elle trouva la force de réformer le Carmel. Elle était à dix-huit ans au Carmel d’Avila, sa ville natale,. Au bout de vingt-sept ans, la grâce fait d’elle une âme qui veut ‘’ou souffrir ou mourir’’ pour Jésus. Sous son impulsion, les fondations de Carmels réformés se multiplient. Son énergie et son charme, au service de sa foi, triomphent des oppositions à son action de réformatrice, qui s’étend aussi aux Carmes, avec l’aide de Jean de la Croix.

Pope St Callistus I (- 222)
From a weakened ex-slave in receipt of an invalidity pension, Callistus rose to be archdeacon, had charge of the Roman catacomb which now bears his name, and ended up as Pope. He lived in a time of peace under the emperor Alexander Severus, whose mother was a Christian. He may have been killed in a riot.

I warn you now, as I warned you before: those who behave like this will not inherit the kingdom of God. You cannot belong to Christ Jesus unless you crucify all self-indulgent passions and desires. Since the Spirit is our life, let us be directed by the Spirit.

Meditation
Jesus’ message to the Pharisees, the teachers, and to us is a call for concern: “Alas for you!” His message to the Pharisees is not about paying the prescribed tithes under the Law of Moses but about ignoring those things which Jesus considers more important, including the love of God and of other people. This is a warning to all of us: we may go to church 7 days in a week and pay all the tithes, but if we do not show love to our God and to our neighbours, then we are not different from the Pharisees and the teachers.

Saint Calliste 1er, pape et martyr
Ancien esclave, puis diacre du pape Zéphyrin, Calliste avait organisé à Rome le premier cimetière chrétien officiel qui, aujourd’hui encore, porte son nom. Elu pape en 217, cet homme d’action eut en face un antipape, le futur saint Hippolyte, savant théologien qui prétendait être le fidèle interprète de la Tradition. Malgré les violentes diatribes de ce dernier, Calliste instaura une discipline qui permettait la réconciliation des apostats. Il mourut en 222, victime d’une émeute antichrétienne au Transtévère.

Frères, si vous vous laissez conduire par l’Esprit, vous n’êtes pas soumis à la Loi. On sait bien à quelles actions mène la chair : inconduite, impureté, débauche, idolâtrie, sorcellerie, haines, rivalité, jalousie, emportements, intrigues, divisions, sectarisme, envie, beuveries, orgies et autres choses du même genre. Je vous préviens, comme je l’ai déjà fait : ceux qui commettent de telles actions ne recevront pas en héritage le royaume de Dieu. Mais voici le fruit de l’Esprit : amour, joie, paix, patience, bonté, bienveillance, fidélité, douceur et maîtrise de soi. En ces domaines, la Loi n’intervient pas. Ceux qui sont au Christ Jésus ont crucifié en eux la chair, avec ses passions et ses convoitises. Puisque l’Esprit nous fait vivre, marchons sous la conduite de l’Esprit.

- Il est comme un arbre planté près d’un ruisseau, qui donne du fruit en son temps, et jamais son feuillage ne meurt ; tout ce qu’il entreprend réussira. Tel n’est pas le sort des méchants.
- Mais ils sont comme la paille balayée par le vent. Le Seigneur connaît le chemin des justes, mais le chemin des méchants se perdra.

St Edward the Confessor (1003 – 1066)
He became King of England in 1042. He was regarded as a saint during his lifetime, renowned for his generosity to the Church and to the poor and for his readiness to listen to his subjects’ grievances. He died on 5th January 1066.

Meditation
To have all our sins wiped clean, we must repent and give our lives to Jesus. This conversion is an interior decision expressed in a tangible way. For some, conversion is most pointedly expressed by changing jobs or changing friends. For others, forgiving an enemy or returning to church are critical issues. For others still, such as the Pharisees, the concrete expression of conversion is a matter of money. Many of the Pharisees observed only the letter of the law. They tithed (Lk 11:42) and gave alms. However, they were avaricious men who gave themselves to money rather than to God (Lk 16:13-14). Jesus challenged them to heartfelt almsgiving. This would have been a sign of their conversion, and all would have been wiped clean for them. What would be evidence that you have repented and given your life to Jesus?

1ère lecture :Ga 5, 1-6
Frères, c’est pour que nous soyons libres que le Christ nous a libérés. Alors tenez bon, ne vous mettez pas de nouveau sous le joug de l’esclavage. Moi, Paul, je vous le déclare : si vous vous faites circoncire, le Christ ne vous sera plus d’aucun secours. Je l’atteste encore une fois : tout homme qui se fait circoncire est dans l’obligation de pratiquer la loi de Moïse tout entière. Vous qui cherchez la justification par la Loi, vous vous êtes séparés du Christ, vous êtes déchus de la grâce. Nous, c’est par l’Esprit, en effet, que de la foi nous attendons la justice espérée. Car, dans le Christ Jésus, ce qui a de la valeur, ce n’est pas que l’on soit circoncis ou non, mais c’est la foi, qui agit par la charité.

St Wilfrid (634 – 709)
Wilfrid was born in Northumbria in 634. He took part in the Synod of Whitby (664), where he promoted Rome’s way of calculating the date of Easter, and the Roman form of Christian worship. He was missionary, evangelist, monk and bishop. He died in Oundle, in October 709.

Meditation
Jesus seems pretty hard and harsh with his audience. He calls them an evil generation demanding a sign. He tells them that at the preaching of Jonah, the Ninevites repented. He tells them that there is something greater than Jonah in front of them and infers that they refuse to see it. The Ninevites weren’t exactly model citizens and Jesus is saying they are better than the Israelites. The people are still asking for a sign despite all the miracles Jesus has been performing. In effect, Jesus is implying that when people insist on a sign, it means that the miracles that he performs are of no value in this regard. Jonah is seen here only as a prophet sent to the Ninevites to call for their reform, which God wondrously effected through him in spite of his reluctance, and the queen from the south appears only to seek the wisdom of Solomon. In this context Jesus himself is seen as God’s herald on the basis of his message and the wisdom that it reveals. The preaching of Christ should lead to our conversion because “when Jonah preached they repented; and there is something greater than Jonah here.” The sign that Christ’s preaching has affected us is in our repentance and metanoia.

Païen, cet anglais, roi de Kent, demanda en mariage une chrétienne, Ethelburge. Instruit par les événements mais surtout par saint Paulin, évêque de York, il rejoignit la foi de son épouse. Il aida ainsi à la fondation de l’Eglise anglo-saxonne. Il fut tué lors d’une bataille à Hatfield et sa mort fut considérée comme un martyre.

Dès lors, frères, nous ne sommes pas les enfants d’une servante, nous sommes ceux de la femme libre. C’est pour que nous soyons libres que le Christ nous a libérés. Alors tenez bon, ne vous mettez pas de nouveau sous le joug de l’esclavage.
