St Monica (331 – 387)
She was born at Thagaste in Africa of a Christian family. She was the mother of St. Augustine of Hippo, who when young was intelligent but weak in morals. With many tears she prayed unceasingly to God for his conversion and her prayers were answered shortly before she died.

The woman who fears the Lord will herself be praised. Her children have called her most blessed, her husband has sung her praises.
Collect
O God, who console the sorrowful and who mercifully accepted the motherly tears of Saint Monica for the conversion of her son Augustine, grant us, through the intercession of them both, that we may bitterly regret our sins and find the grace of your pardon. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

Therefore, you too must stand ready because the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect. ‘What sort of servant, then, is faithful and wise enough for the master to place him over his household to give them their food at the proper time? Happy that servant if his master’s arrival finds him at this employment. I tell you solemnly, he will place him over everything he owns. But as for the dishonest servant who says to himself, “My master is taking his time,” and sets about beating his fellow servants and eating and drinking with drunkards, his master will come on a day he does not expect and at an hour he does not know. The master will cut him off and send him to the same fate as the hypocrites, where there will be weeping and grinding of teeth.’

Prayer after Communion
May the working of this divine Sacrament enlighten and inflame us, almighty God, on this feast day of Saint Monica that we may be ever fervent with holy desires and abound in good works. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
Let us be certain about which coming Christ is talking about. Is He referring to our death or about the end of the world? Both are most certainly comings of the Lord which he has left out in order to provoke a constant attention on us. But perhaps none in our generation or even those yet to come will witness the end of human life in this planet. We will all come and go in turns. And, insofar as death is concerned, it will be only once and that will be the end of our sojourn here on earth. But, while this moment is yet to come, what things are we putting in place to be on our guard? We pray that God give us the wisdom to know what to do, the skill to know how to do it and the virtue to do them. We must be on guard always.

Sainte Monique
Cette chrétienne d’Afrique romaine, qui obtint par trente ans de patient dévouement la conversion de son mari, païen violent et débauché, avait pour fils aîné Augustin, dont l’inconduite la désolait. Monique (332-387) s’entendu assurer par l’évêque de Milan, saint Ambroise :’’Il n’est pas possible que le fils de tant de larmes périsse’’. Sa prière obtint en effet la conversion d’Augustin, entre les bras de qui elle mourut à Ostie.

Tenez-vous donc prêts, vous aussi : c’est à l’heure où vous n’y penserez pas que le Fils de l’homme viendra. Que dire du serviteur fidèle et sensé à qui le maître a confié la charge des gens de sa maison, pour leur donner la nourriture en temps voulu ? Heureux ce serviteur que son maître, en arrivant, trouvera en train d’agir ainsi ! Amen, je vous le déclare : il l’établira sur tous ses biens. Mais si ce mauvais serviteur se dit en lui-même : “Mon maître tarde”, et s’il se met à frapper ses compagnons, s’il mange et boit avec les ivrognes, alors quand le maître viendra, le jour où son serviteur ne s’y attend pas et à l’heure qu’il ne connaît pas, il l’écartera et lui fera partager le sort des hypocrites ; là, il y aura des pleurs et des grincements de dents. »

Blessed Dominic Barberi (1792 – 1849)
Dominic Barberi was born near Viterbo, Italy, in 1792 and joined the Passionist Order. He worked as a missionary in England. Blessed Dominic was noted for the personal warmth of his approach to non-Catholics and for his zeal in preaching; he drew crowds in spite of his strong Italian accent. Blessed Dominic died at Reading in 1849.

Meditation
Jesus charges the Pharisees with hypocrisy. If we want to avoid being hypocrites, we must employ a three-step action. Firstly, with God, since He wants me pure in heart and hates lies, as He is totally pure, the true Truth Himself. Secondly, with myself, so that I may not be deceived, exposed to sin against the Holy Spirit (not admitting my own sins especially in the Sacrament of confession, or for not trusting God enough. Thirdly, with others, to avoid lies, deception, insincerity, dishonesty, disloyalty and low-mindedness, etc. but if we apply the principle: “do to others what you want them to do unto you”, we would be true to ourselves and shun hypocrisy.

Saint Césaire d’Arles, évêque
En 503, un ancien moine de Lérins, devenu prêtre, puis abbé d’un monastère proche d’Arles, fut élu évêque de cette cité. Césaire (vers 470-543) a été appelé le ‘’précepteur de la Gaule’’. Grand admirateur de saint Augustin, il fut un prédicateur infatigable, à la parole simple, brève et concrète. Délégué du pape, il anima les conciles régionaux de Provence, dont le plus célèbre est celui d’Orange (529), décisif pour la théologie de la grâce. Pasteur soucieux du bien spirituel de ses ouailles, il fut un promoteur de la liturgie populaire.

1ère lecture : 2 Th 3, 6-10.16-18

Vous savez bien, vous, ce qu’il faut faire pour nous imiter. Nous n’avons pas vécu parmi vous de façon désordonnée ; et le pain que nous avons mangé, nous ne l’avons pas reçu gratuitement. Au contraire, dans la peine et la fatigue, nuit et jour, nous avons travaillé pour n’être à la charge d’aucun d’entre vous. Bien sûr, nous avons le droit d’être à charge, mais nous avons voulu être pour vous un modèle à imiter. Et quand nous étions chez vous, nous vous donnions cet ordre : si quelqu’un ne veut pas travailler, qu’il ne mange pas non plus. Que le Seigneur de la paix vous donne lui-même la paix, en tout temps et de toute manière. Que le Seigneur soit avec vous tous. La salutation est de ma main à moi, Paul. Evangile : Mc 6, 17-29
Hérode, prince de Galilée, avait fait arrêter Jean et l’avait mis en prison. En effet, il avait épousé Hérodiade, la femme de son frère Philippe, et Jean lui disait : « Tu n’as pas le droit de prendre la femme de ton frère. » Hérodiade en voulait donc à Jean, et elle cherchait à le faire mettre à mort. Mais elle n’y arrivait pas parce que Hérode avait peur de Jean : il savait que c’était un homme juste et saint, et il le protégeait ; quand il l’avait entendu, il était très embarrassé, et pourtant, il aimait l’entendre. Cependant, une occasion favorable se présenta lorsque Hérode, pour son anniversaire, donna un banquet à ses dignitaires, aux chefs de l’armée et aux notables de la Galilée. La fille d’Hérodiade fit son entrée et dansa. Elle plut à Hérode et à ses convives. Le roi dit à la jeune fille : « Demande-moi tout ce que tu veux, je te le donnerai. » Et il lui fit ce serment : « Tout ce que tu me demanderas, je te le donnerai, même si c’est la moitié de mon royaume. » Elle sortit alors pour dire à sa mère : « Qu’est-ce que je vais demander ? » Hérodiade répondit : « La tête de Jean le Baptiste. » Aussitôt la jeune fille s’empressa de retourner auprès du roi, et lui fit cette demande : « Je veux que tout de suite tu me donnes sur un plat la tête de Jean Baptiste. » Le roi fut vivement contrarié ; mais à cause du serment fait devant les convives, il ne voulut pas lui opposer un refus. Aussitôt il envoya un garde avec l’ordre d’apporter la tête de Jean. Le garde s’en alla, et le décapita dans la prison. Il apporta 1a tête sur un plat, la donna à la jeune fille, et la jeune fille la donna à sa mère. Lorsque les disciples de Jean apprirent cela, ils vinrent prendre son corps et le déposèrent dans un tombeau.

Par l’offrande que nous te présentons, Seigneur, accorde-nous cette droiture de vie que Jean Baptiste a prêchée en criant dans le désert et dont il a témoigné jusqu’au martyre. Par Jésus

St Joseph of Calasanz (1557 – 1648)
He was born in Aragón, received an excellent education and was ordained priest. After working in his own country for some time he went to Rome, where he worked for the education of the poor and founded a religious congregation for that purpose. His idea was that every child should receive an education. He died in Rome in 1648.

Jesus says: «Purify the inside first, then the outside too will be purified» (Mt 23:26). This could be true of each and everyone of us! We know how personal hygiene/cleanliness makes us feel fresh and comfortable within and without. Even more so in the spiritual and moral matters, our inner life, will shine forth in good deeds and speak for themselves, if we are clean and pure that will give God fitting worship. “Cleanliness, they say is next to Godliness”. May we continue to aspire for what will make us clean in and out and let our religious acts be born out of true love for God and not pretence.

Saint Louis de France
Le visage de Louis IX, roi de France, (1215-1270) a pour trait caractéristique la justice avec laquelle il accomplit sa mission et qui en fait le modèle des rois. Ce tertiaire franciscain, qui soigne les lépreux, ce père de onze enfants qui aime tendrement sa femme, cet homme de prière qui ne voit dans la mort que l’entrée dans la Jérusalem du ciel, est aussi le prince qui veille au bonheur des petites gens sur la terre, le roi qui sait renoncer à accroître son territoire pour le bien de la paix, le chevalier qui risque sa vie pour délivrer le tombeau du Christ.
Saint Joseph Calasanz
Joseph Calasanz (1556-1648) se voua au service des enfants pauvres. Né en Aragon, il fonda à Rome la congrégation des Clercs réguliers des Ecoles pies. Mais sa charité fut mise à l’épreuve par les persécuteurs qui aboutirent, de son vivant, à la suppression de son œuvre par le pape Innocent X. En 1656, l’œuvre de Joseph Calasanz prenait un nouveau départ. Le pape Pie XII devait le proclamer patron des écoles populaires.

Dans son Eglise, le Seigneur a donné la parole à l’évêque saint Augustin ; il l’a rempli de l’esprit de sagesse et d’intelligence, il l’a revêtu de gloire.

Renouvelle, Seigneur, dans ton Église l’Esprit dont tu as comblé l’évêque saint Augustin ; Pour que, remplis de ce même Esprit, nous n’ayons soif que de toi, source de la vraie sagesse, et ne cherchions que toi, auteur de l’éternel amour.

Frères, nous avons une demande à vous faire à propos de la venue de notre Seigneur Jésus Christ et de notre rassemblement auprès de lui : si l’on nous attribue une inspiration, une parole ou une lettre prétendant que le jour du Seigneur est arrivé, n’allez pas aussitôt perdre la tête, ne vous laissez pas effrayer. Voilà ce qu’il fallait pratiquer sans négliger le reste. Guides aveugles ! Vous filtrez le moucheron, et vous avalez le chameau ! St Bartholomew, Apostle
He was born at Cana and brought by the Apostle Philip to meet Jesus. Nothing further is known for certain. Eusebius speaks of him in India, but the Roman Martyrology has him martyred in Armenia, skinned alive according to the Persian custom. He is a patron saint of the sick.

Meditation
Part of our job as Christians is to lead others to Christ. We imbibe the teachings of Christ so that we can shine for others to see and follow. Philip found Nathaniel and told him he has found the one whom the prophets wrote about. This must be our attitude every day; leading others to Christ. If we cannot do that, then our followership of Christ would make no meaning. Salvation is not only personal but collective. There is only one family of God and we must strive to bring others to Christ just as Philip did.

Saint Barthélemy, apôtre
Dans la liste des Douze figurant dans les trois évangiles synoptiques, Barthélemy prend place après Philippe. L’évangile de Jean ne donne pas cette liste, mais il transmet telle parole ou telle intervention de certains Apôtres, ce qui permet d’entrevoir leur personnalité ; c’est le cas pour André, Philippe, Thomas et Jude. C’est aussi le cas pour Barthélemy, si ce nom qui veut dire ‘’fils de Tholomée’’, s’applique à l’ami de Philippe, que Jean appelle Nathanaël. Ce Nathanaël, né à Cana (Jn 21,2), s’en tient aux idées reçues ; il ne cèdera pas à la séduction exercée sur Philippe par un obscur Galiléen, Jésus. Mais cet inconnu lui montre qu’il connaît les secrets de son cœur ; dès lors, Nathanaël se laisse vaincre par la vérité : Jésus est l’envoyé de Dieu, qu’il attendait et qu’il suivra. Comme Thomas, Barthélemy –Nathanaël est un témoin sûr.

Because it was not flesh and blood that revealed this to you but my Father in heaven. So I now say to you: You are Peter and on this rock I will build my Church. Meditation
Jesus asked a very pertinent question. Peter in his turn speaks up and gives the opinion of others. This is very common among us. We tend to give the opinion of others instead of saying what lies deep within our hearts. We are fond of sending others to the fore-front. Jesus then asks a personal question to Peter; “but you, who do you say I am?” Jesus is asking the same to you and I today. Who is Jesus for you. Do you believe in his saving power? God is not going to use human language but spiritual words which only loving hearts can hear. The above question is about Jesus’ relationship to us with us, and only when we answer this question that we would be certain about how we are going on this journey of salvation.

Sainte Rose de Lima
La patronne de l’Amérique du Sud est une jeune Péruvienne d’origine espagnole, morte à trente et un ans. Isabelle d’Oliva (1586-1617), surnommée Rose à cause de son teint, prit à vingt ans l’habit de tertiaire dominicaine, comme sainte Catherine de Sienne qu’elle admirait. Elle habita alors une petite cellule dans le jardin de ses parents et y vécut dans la mortification et de dures épreuves intérieures.
