St John Eudes (1601 – 1680)
He was born and died in Normandy. He was ordained priest and spent many years preaching parish missions. He organized a congregation of nuns that grew into the Sisters of Our Lady of Charity, dedicated to the care of women rescued from a disorderly life, and a congregation of priests dedicated to the running of seminaries.

Jesus said to his disciples: ‘The kingdom of heaven is like a landowner going out at daybreak to hire workers for his vineyard. He made an agreement with the workers for one denarius a day, and sent them to his vineyard. Going out at about the third hour he saw others standing idle in the market place and said to them, “You go to my vineyard too and I will give you a fair wage.” So they went. At about the sixth hour and again at about the ninth hour, he went out and did the same. Then at about the eleventh hour he went out and found more men standing round, and he said to them, “Why have you been standing here idle all day?” “Because no one has hired us” they answered. He said to them, “You go into my vineyard too.” In the evening, the owner of the vineyard said to his bailiff, “Call the workers and pay them their wages, starting with the last arrivals and ending with the first.” So those who were hired at about the eleventh hour came forward and received one denarius each. When the first came, they expected to get more, but they too received one denarius each. They took it, but grumbled at the landowner. “The men who came last” they said “have done only one hour, and you have treated them the same as us, though we have done a heavy day’s work in all the heat.” He answered one of them and said, “My friend, I am not being unjust to you; did we not agree on one denarius? Take your earnings and go. I choose to pay the last comer as much as I pay you. Have I no right to do what I like with my own? Why be envious because I am generous?” Thus the last will be first, and the first, last.’

Made partakers of Christ through these Sacraments, we humbly implore your mercy, Lord, that, conformed to his image on earth, we may merit also to be his coheirs in heaven. Who lives and reigns for ever and ever.
Meditation
We often think justice makes no meaning. God is just, but charity does not conflict with justice; it rather goes beyond. God is the master, our «landowner who went out early in the morning to hire workers to work his vineyard. The vineyard is life eternal, heaven. It belongs to God as the owner; we are just invited to work in this vineyard and not just in any way: it is a big privilege for us to be able to work there and be rewarded with heaven. But let us look at this from another dimension; it is just for God to welcome sinners who turn to him at the end of their lives, to be rewarded with heaven as well as those who have followed Him tirelessly almost all their life with sense of commitment.

Touchée par l’exemple du Poverello, une jeune fille d’Assise offrit au Christ la fraîcheur de ses dix-huit ans et se confia à saint François, le dimanche des Rameaux 1212. Ce fut l’origine du second ordre franciscain, celui des Pauvres Dames ou Clarisses. Sœur Claire (1193-1253) allait diriger pendant quarante-deux ans le couvent de Saint-Damien à Assise, le premier de l’Ordre.

St Laurence, Deacon, Martyr (258)
Laurence was one of the seven deacons of the Church of Rome and was executed on 10th August 258, four days after Sixtus II and his companions. He was probably a Spaniard from Toledo.

Entrance Antiphon
This is the blessed Lawrence who gave himself up for the treasure of the Church: for this he earned the suffering of martyrdom to ascend with joy to the Lord Jesus Christ.
Collect
O God, giver of that ardour of love for you by which Saint Lawrence was outstandingly faithful in service and glorious in martyrdom, grant that we may love what he loved and put into practice what he taught. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
First reading: 2 Corinthians 9:6-10
Do not forget: thin sowing means thin reaping; the more you sow, the more you reap. Each one should give what he has decided in his own mind, not grudgingly or because he is made to, for God loves a cheerful giver. And there is no limit to the blessings which God can send you – he will make sure that you will always have all you need for yourselves in every possible circumstance, and still have something to spare for all sorts of good works. As scripture says: He was free in almsgiving, and gave to the poor: his good deeds will never be forgotten. The one who provides seed for the sower and bread for food will provide you with all the seed you want and make the harvest of your good deeds a larger one.

Meditation
Part of the issues we have with our fellow human beings is the fact of not being open handed, being stingy. Let us use a simply example for our reflection. If we close our hands, it means nothing can go out and nothing can as well come in, but on the contrary, when our hands are open then things can go out and come in at will. Giving is very important in the exercise of our faith. It is this same act of giving that Christ showed by offering his own Divine self for love of us. If Christ can give himself, how much more of things which will pass away. We are urged to give especially to the poor around us. But remember that it is God who provides and so we are not to store when there is need. God loves a cheerful giver.

Saint Laurent, diacre et martyr
Le diacre Laurent fut arrêté lors de la persécution de Valérien et mourut par le feu peu de jours après le pape Sixte II, exécuté en 258. D’après le récit de son martyre, Laurent, intendant des biens de l’Eglise, n’aurait pas trouvé meilleur moyen pour les préserver de la rapacité des persécuteurs, que de les distribuer aux pauvres ; il aurait été brûlé sur un lit de fer en forme de gril. Laurent est, après Pierre et Paul, le troisième patron de la ville de Rome, qui lui a voué un culte fervent et lui a consacré nombre d’églises.
Antienne d’ouverture :
Au service de l’Eglise, le diacre saint Laurent s’est offert lui-même ; il fut digne de souffrir le martyre et de rejoindre dans la joie le Seigneur Jésus Christ.
Prière d’ouverture :
C’est l’ardeur de ton amour, Seigneur, qui a donné au diacre saint Laurent de se montrer fidèle dans son service, et d’accéder à la gloire du martyre ; accorde-nous d’aimer ce qu’il aimait, et d’accomplir ce qu’il a enseigné. Par Jésus.
1ère lecture : 2 Co 9, 6-10
Frères, rappelez-vous le proverbe : À semer trop peu, on récolte trop peu ; à semer largement, on récolte largement. Que chacun donne comme il a décidé dans son cœur, sans regret et sans contrainte, car Dieu aime celui qui donne joyeusement. Et Dieu est assez puissant pour vous donner toute grâce en abondance, afin que vous ayez, en toute chose et toujours, tout ce qu’il vous faut, et même que vous ayez en abondance de quoi faire toute sorte de bien. L’Écriture dit en effet de l’homme juste : Il distribue, il donne aux pauvres ; sa justice demeure à jamais. Dieu, qui fournit la semence au semeur et le pain pour la nourriture, vous fournira la graine ; il la multipliera, il donnera la croissance à ce que vous accomplirez dans la justice.

What I want to say now is no pretence; I say it in union with Christ – it is the truth – my conscience in union with the Holy Spirit assures me of it too. What I want to say is this: my sorrow is so great, my mental anguish so endless, I would willingly be condemned and be cut off from Christ if it could help my brothers of Israel, my own flesh and blood. Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side while he would send the crowds away. After sending the crowds away he went up into the hills by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, while the boat, by now far out on the lake, was battling with a heavy sea, for there was a head-wind. In the fourth watch of the night he went towards them, walking on the lake, and when the disciples saw him walking on the lake they were terrified. ‘It is a ghost’ they said, and cried out in fear. But at once Jesus called out to them, saying, ‘Courage! It is I! Do not be afraid.’ It was Peter who answered. ‘Lord,’ he said ‘if it is you, tell me to come to you across the water.’ ‘Come’ said Jesus. Then Peter got out of the boat and started walking towards Jesus across the water, but as soon as he felt the force of the wind, he took fright and began to sink. ‘Lord! Save me!’ he cried. Jesus put out his hand at once and held him. ‘Man of little faith,’ he said ‘why did you doubt?’ And as they got into the boat the wind dropped. The men in the boat bowed down before him and said, ‘Truly, you are the Son of God.’

May the communion in your Sacrament that we have consumed, save us, O Lord, and confirm us in the light of your truth. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
Without their Master, the disciples had troubles facing the strong wind. It was then that Jesus came to them walking on the water. Sometimes god can allow us to be in stormy situations in life just to see if we have faith in him. In a sense, Jesus was inviting them not to be afraid, to trust him to awake their faith in them. Jesus also asks us every minute of our lives, as he did Peter, come towards me. The road towards Christ is never an easy one, but what do we do when our faith begins to fail us, when we begin to doubt? When we walk with faith in Christ, we tend to attract others who are with us. We therefore become channels and passages for their increase in faith in Christ. «The group of those that already were apostles, but did not yet fully believe, when they saw the waters waving below the Lord’s feet and appreciated his steps were firm through the stormy waves (…) they believed Jesus was the true Son of God, and accepted him as such» (St. Ambrose).

Sainte Thérèse Bénédicte de La Croix
Née dans le judaïsme, Edith Stein était professeur d’université à Wroclaw (Breslau) et elle se tourna progressivement vers le Christ. Au temps de l’invasion nazie et de la persécution des juifs, elle devint carmélite à Cologne, prenant le nom de Thérèse Bénédicte de La Croix. Elle fut martyrisée à Auschwitz.

J’écoute : Que dira le Seigneur Dieu ? Ce qu’il dit, c’est la paix pour son peuple et ses fidèles. Son salut est proche de ceux qui le craignent, et la gloire habitera notre terre.
Amour et vérité se rencontrent, justice et paix s’embrassent ; la vérité germera de la terre et du ciel se penchera la justice.

Deuxième lecture (Rm 9, 1-5)
Frères, c’est la vérité que je dis dans le Christ, je ne mens pas, ma conscience m’en rend témoignage dans l’Esprit Saint : j’ai dans le cœur une grande tristesse, une douleur incessante. Moi-même, pour les Juifs, mes frères de race, je souhaiterais être anathème, séparé du Christ : ils sont en effet Israélites, ils ont l’adoption, la gloire, les alliances, la législation, le culte, les promesses de Dieu ; ils ont les patriarches, et c’est de leur race que le Christ est né, lui qui est au-dessus de tout, Dieu béni pour les siècles. Évangile (Mt 14, 22-33)
Aussitôt après avoir nourri la foule dans le désert, Jésus obligea les disciples à monter dans la barque et à le précéder sur l’autre rive, pendant qu’il renverrait les foules. Quand il les eut renvoyées, il gravit la montagne, à l’écart, pour prier. Le soir venu, il était là, seul. La barque était déjà à une bonne distance de la terre, elle était battue par les vagues, car le vent était contraire. Vers la fin de la nuit, Jésus vint vers eux en marchant sur la mer. En le voyant marcher sur la mer, les disciples furent bouleversés. Ils dirent : « C’est un fantôme. » Pris de peur, ils se mirent à crier. Mais aussitôt Jésus leur parla : « Confiance ! c’est moi ; n’ayez plus peur ! » Pierre prit alors la parole : « Seigneur, si c’est bien toi, ordonne-moi de venir vers toi sur les eaux. » Jésus lui dit : « Viens ! » Pierre descendit de la barque et marcha sur les eaux pour aller vers Jésus. Mais, voyant la force du vent, il eut peur et, comme il commençait à enfoncer, il cria : « Seigneur, sauve-moi ! » Aussitôt, Jésus étendit la main, le saisit et lui dit : « Homme de peu de foi, pourquoi as-tu douté ? » Et quand ils furent montés dans la barque, le vent tomba. Alors ceux qui étaient dans la barque se prosternèrent devant lui, et ils lui dirent : « Vraiment, tu es le Fils de Dieu ! » – Acclamons la Parole de Dieu.

St Dominic, Priest (1170 – 1221)

He was born in Castile (part of modern Spain) and became a canon of the cathedral of Osma. In 1216 he founded the Order of Preachers, dedicated to saving souls by preaching and persuasion. Dominic died at Bologna on 6th August 1221.

Blessed is the servant whom the Lord finds watching when he comes. Amen I say to you: He will put that servant in charge of all his property.
Prayer after Communion
May your Church, O Lord, receive with wholehearted reverence the power of this heavenly Sacrament, by which we have been nourished on the commemoration of Saint Dominic, and may your Church, having flourished by means of his preaching, be helped through his intercession. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
How we express our request sometimes shows how fully we accept our personal conditions and the recognition of the mercifulness of He through whom all miracles are worked. The expression «nothing would be impossible to you» (Mt 17:20) points to the level of faith we must possess if we want to be part of this vineyard. God’s Word places before us the thought about the quality of our faith and the way how we get deeper into it. In whatever thing we do in life, in all circumstances, we must find a certain amount of faith for it to work for us. Miracles do exist but what amount of conviction do we have in Christ who makes all things possible?

Saint Dominique, Prêtre
D’abord chanoine régulier d’Osma, Vieille Castille, Dominique de Guzman (1170-1221) découvre, au cours d’un voyage où il accompagne son évêque, les ravages faits par l’hérésie albigeoise dans le Midi de la France, et les vrais remèdes qu’il faudrait employer pour en délivrer l’Eglise. Il entreprend, avec quelques compagnons, une prédication de l’Evangile, qui s’appuie sur la prière du couvent de Prouille où il a rassemblé quelques converties de l’hérésie. La pauvreté évangélique caractérise ces prêcheurs dont le premier couvent est fondé à Toulouse. Honorius III approuva en 1216 l’œuvre de Dominique, qui mourut peu après le premier chapitre général de son ordre, alors que ses fils étaient déjà répandus en France, en Espagne et en Italie.

1ère lecture : Ha 1, 12 – 2, 4
Seigneur, depuis les temps anciens, n’es-tu pas mon Dieu, mon Saint, toi qui es immortel ? Seigneur, tu as établi les Chaldéens pour exécuter le jugement ; tu en as fait un roc pour exercer le châtiment. Tes yeux sont trop purs pour voir le mal, tu ne peux supporter la vue de l’oppression. Alors, pourquoi regardes-tu ces perfides, pourquoi restes-tu silencieux quand le méchant engloutit l’homme juste ? Tu traites les hommes comme les poissons de la mer, et comme les reptiles que personne ne domine. Le Chaldéen les pêche tous avec son hameçon, les prend avec son filet, et les recueille dans ses nasses, ce qui le comble de joie et d’allégresse ! Alors il offre des sacrifices à son filet, il fait fumer de l’encens devant ses nasses, car il leur doit une prise abondante et une nourriture copieuse. N’arrêtera-t-il pas de vider son filet, de massacrer sans pitié des nations ? Je vais me tenir à mon poste de garde, rester debout sur mon rempart, guetter ce que Dieu me dira, et comment il répliquera à mes plaintes. Alors le Seigneur me répondit : « Tu vas mettre par écrit une vision, clairement, sur des tablettes, pour qu’on puisse la lire couramment. Car c’est encore une vision pour le temps fixé ; elle tendra vers son accomplissement, et ne décevra pas. Si elle paraît tarder, attends-la : elle viendra certainement, sans retard. Celui qui est insolent n’a pas l’âme droite, mais le juste vivra par sa fidélité. »

R/ Jamais tu n’abandonnes, Seigneur, ceux qui te cherchent.
- Il siège, le Seigneur, à jamais : pour juger, il affermit son trône ; il juge le monde avec justice et gouverne les peuples avec droiture.

En ce temps là, un homme s’approcha de lui, et tombant à ses genoux, il dit : « Seigneur, prends pitié de mon fils. Il est épileptique et il souffre beaucoup. Souvent il tombe dans le feu et, souvent aussi, dans l’eau. Je l’ai amené à tes disciples, mais ils n’ont pas pu le guérir. » Prenant la parole, Jésus dit : « Génération incroyante et dévoyée, combien de temps devrai-je rester avec vous ? Combien de temps devrai-je vous supporter ? Amenez-le-moi. » Jésus menaça le démon, et il sortit de lui. À l’heure même, l’enfant fut guéri. Alors les disciples s’approchèrent de Jésus et lui dirent en particulier : « Pour quelle raison est-ce que nous, nous n’avons pas réussi à l’expulser ? » Jésus leur répond : « En raison de votre peu de foi. Amen, je vous le dis : si vous avez de la foi gros comme une graine de moutarde, vous direz à cette montagne : “Transporte-toi d’ici jusque là-bas”, et elle se transportera ; rien ne vous sera impossible. »

Pope St Sixtus II and his companions (258)
Saint Cajetan, Priest
Sixtus was elected Pope in 257. Twelve months later, on 6th August, as he was celebrating Mass in the catacomb of St Calixtus, he was seized by the authorities and beheaded along with four of his deacons. He was buried in the same catacomb.

Meditation
We are confronted with an absolutely radical approach, and following Christ does not admit of any half measures: «If you want to follow me, deny yourself, take up your cross and follow me» (Mt 16:24). Followership of Christ is total and full; this is how we show our love for him. Often times we face hardships created by both us and/or by others. Our everyday experiences must be seen as acts of love and a constant journey towards our eternal resting place, for in them we participate in Christ’s suffering. We must not do anything to add neither to the sufferings of others nor our own, for man creates the sufferings he endures. As St. Augustine says: «When one loves, one does not suffer; but if one does suffer, the very suffering is loved».

Saint Sixte II, pape, et ses compagnons, martyrs
Elu pape en 257, Sixte célébrait la liturgie au cimetière de Calliste, le 6 août 258, quand il fut arrêté et décapité sur place, avec quatre de ses diacres. Trois autres diacres, dont Laurent (10 août), furent victimes de la même persécution de Valérien.
Saint Gaétan, prêtre
Natif de Vicence, en Vénétie, et ordonné prêtre à trente-six ans, Gaétan (1480-1547) était timide. Cela ne l’empêcha pas de se dépenser au service des orphelins, des incurables et des prisonniers, dans l’ « Association du Divin Amour ». Il fonda à Rome la Congrégation des clercs réguliers qu’on appela Théatins, en raison du rôle joué dans la fondation par l’évêque de Chieti (en latin ‘’Theate’’), Jean-Pierre Caraffa, le futur Paul IV. Gaétan exigeait de ses religieux la pauvreté absolue et refusait tout revenu.
Sainte Julienne du Mont-Cornillon, vierge (en Belgique)
Religieuse au Mont-Cornillon, près de Liège, Julienne (1192-1258) reçut des révélations qui l’incitèrent, malgré son humilité, à travailler à l’institution d’une fête en l’honneur du Saint-Sacrement. Célébrée en 1229 à Liège sur l’initiative de l’évêque, la fête fut étendue à tout l’Occident par le pape Urbain IV en 1264, après la mort de la sainte, à Fosses, où elle s’est retirée.

Voici sur les montagnes les pas du messager qui annonce la paix. Célèbre tes fêtes, ô Juda, accomplis tes vœux, car le Mauvais ne recommencera plus à passer sur toi : il a été entièrement anéanti. Le Seigneur revient. Avec lui, la splendeur de Jacob comme celle d’Israël, alors que les pillards les avaient pillés et avaient ravagé leurs vignobles. Malheur à la ville sanguinaire toute de mensonge, pleine de rapines, et qui ne lâche jamais sa proie. Écoutez ! Claquements des fouets, fracas des roues, galop des chevaux, roulement des chars ! Cavaliers qui chargent, épées qui flamboient, lances qui étincellent ! Innombrables blessés, accumulation de morts, cadavres à perte de vue ! On bute sur les cadavres ! Je vais jeter sur toi des choses horribles, te déshonorer, te donner en spectacle. Tous ceux qui te verront s’enfuiront en disant : « Ninive est dévastée !
