1ère lecture : Ac 18, 23b-28
Après avoir passé quelque temps à Antioche, Paul partit. Il parcourut successivement le pays galate et la Phrygie, en affermissant tous les disciples. Or, un Juif nommé Apollos, originaire d’Alexandrie, venait d’arriver à Éphèse. C’était un homme éloquent, versé dans les Écritures. Il avait été instruit du Chemin du Seigneur ; dans la ferveur de l’Esprit, il parlait et enseignait avec précision ce qui concerne Jésus, mais, comme baptême, il ne connaissait que celui de Jean le Baptiste. Il se mit donc à parler avec assurance à la synagogue. Quand Priscille et Aquila l’entendirent, ils le prirent à part et lui exposèrent avec plus de précision le Chemin de Dieu. Comme Apollos voulait se rendre en Grèce, les frères l’y encouragèrent, et écrivirent aux disciples de lui faire bon accueil. Quand il fut arrivé, il rendit de grands services à ceux qui étaient devenus croyants par la grâce de Dieu. En effet, avec vigueur il réfutait publiquement les Juifs, en démontrant par les Écritures que le Christ, c’est Jésus.

St John Baptist of Rossi
He became a priest in the 1720s and worked tirelessly in Rome on behalf of homeless women, the sick, prisoners and workers, becoming a very popular confessor. Owing to his selfless desire to assist the needy and downtrodden, he eventually succumbed to illness and died on May 23, 1764.

First reading: Acts 18:23-28
Paul came down to Antioch, where he spent a short time before continuing his journey through the Galatian country and then through Phrygia, encouraging all the followers. An Alexandrian Jew named Apollos now arrived in Ephesus. He was an eloquent man, with a sound knowledge of the scriptures, and yet, though he had been given instruction in the Way of the Lord and preached with great spiritual earnestness and was accurate in all the details he taught about Jesus, he had only experienced the baptism of John. When Priscilla and Aquila heard him speak boldly in the synagogue, they took an interest in him and gave him further instruction about the Way. When Apollos thought of crossing over to Achaia, the brothers encouraged him and wrote asking the disciples to welcome him. When he arrived there he was able by God’s grace to help the believers considerably by the energetic way he refuted the Jews in public and demonstrated from the scriptures that Jesus was the Christ.

Meditation
Today, Jesus makes a solemn promise that whatever the disciples ask the Father in His name will be given to them. It is the same promise Jesus makes to each of us. What we need most of all is to be close to God and to be equipped with all those things and do all those things which will bring us closer to his will and enable us to work with him for the building of the kingdom. Our prayers will be answered, although not always exactly in the way we might envisage. It may not be until much later that we realise just how our prayers have been answered and often in very unexpected ways. Jesus, you have revealed the immense love the Father has for all people by the ultimate self-giving of your life. Help me never to doubt your love for me. Help me to respond to your love through fidelity to your will and the practice of charity.

St. Rita of Cascia (1377 – 1447)
She was born in Italy. She was married at the age of 12 but became a nun following the death of her husband. She is widely honoured as the patron saint of impossible or lost causes.

If this were a misdemeanour or a crime, I would not hesitate to attend to you; but if it is only quibbles about words and names, and about your own Law, then you must deal with it yourselves – I have no intention of making legal decisions about things like that.’ Then he sent them out of the court, and at once they all turned on Sosthenes, the synagogue president, and beat him in front of the court house. Gallio refused to take any notice at all. After staying on for some time, Paul took leave of the brothers and sailed for Syria, accompanied by Priscilla and Aquila. At Cenchreae he had his hair cut off, because of a vow he had made.

Meditation
From sadness to joy. The disciples will have to go through such an experience, like a woman in child birth who suffers greatly but is so happy to see her newborn child. Today’s passage adds the promise that when Jesus sees them again, they will experience a joy ‘no one can take away’. And they will no longer have need of asking the questions they are asking now. This does not mean that there will no longer be sufferings in the future. There will be and some of them will give their lives for their commitment to Jesus and the kingdom. Let us pray for the grace to have enduring presence of the Risen Jesus with us at all times. Wherever we happen to be, may we experience the joy that Jesus gives, in spite of inevitable trials and disappointments.

Sous le proconsulat de Gallion en Grèce, les Juifs, unanimes, se dressèrent contre Paul et l’amenèrent devant le tribunal, en disant : « La manière dont cet individu incite les gens à adorer le Dieu unique est contraire à la loi. » Au moment où Paul allait ouvrir la bouche, Gallion déclara aux Juifs : « S’il s’agissait d’un délit ou d’un méfait grave, je recevrais votre plainte à vous, Juifs, comme il se doit. Mais s’il s’agit de débats sur des mots, sur des noms et sur la Loi qui vous est propre, cela vous regarde. Être juge en ces affaires, moi je m’y refuse. » Et il les chassa du tribunal. Tous alors se saisirent de Sosthène, chef de synagogue, et se mirent à le frapper devant le tribunal, tandis que Gallion restait complètement indifférent. Paul demeura encore assez longtemps à Corinthe. Puis il fit ses adieux aux frères et s’embarqua pour la Syrie, accompagné de Priscille et d’Aquila. À Cencrées, il s’était fait raser la tête, car le vœu qui le liait avait pris fin.

THE ASCENSION OF THE LORD
St Christopher Magallanes and his Companions
He was born in Mexico in 1869. He took a special interest in the evangelization of the local indigenous Huichol. Falsely accused, he was arrested and executed without a trial in 1927.

In my earlier work, Theophilus, I dealt with everything Jesus had done and taught from the beginning until the day he gave his instructions to the apostles he had chosen through the Holy Spirit, and was taken up to heaven. He had shown himself alive to them after his Passion by many demonstrations: for forty days he had continued to appear to them and tell them about the kingdom of God. When he had been at table with them, he had told them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait there for what the Father had promised. ‘It is’ he had said ‘what you have heard me speak about: John baptised with water but you, not many days from now, will be baptised with the Holy Spirit.’ Now having met together, they asked him, ‘Lord, has the time come? Are you going to restore the kingdom to Israel?’ He replied, ‘It is not for you to know times or dates that the Father has decided by his own authority, but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you, and then you will be my witnesses not only in Jerusalem but throughout Judaea and Samaria, and indeed to the ends of the earth.’ As he said this he was lifted up while they looked on, and a cloud took him from their sight. Meditation
Today being the feast of the Ascension, we reflect on the great commission of Jesus to his apostles. The passage of today contains the final instructive words of Jesus to His Church. Though the commission is given to the disciples there present, it equally applies to us today. We are called by Jesus to make disciples of all people, to go out into the world and teach and live the truth of the cross of redemption. To be baptised is to show our commitment to the Lord and to his call. We might like to reflect on the following questions: what did my baptism mean to me? Was it a social act I accepted because I had to do? Was it because my parents wanted me to? Or because I identified with the Lord and so freely chose it? When someone becomes a Christian, he is to follow the ways of the Lord Jesus. Being a Christian means accepting that Jesus is Lord. Jesus is always with us and will never leave us. This is a sign of his deity and it is a comfort to know that Jesus is always with us. He will never forsake us no matter what the situation is.

Cher Théophile, dans mon premier livre j’ai parlé de tout ce que Jésus a fait et enseigné depuis le moment où il commença, jusqu’au jour où il fut enlevé au ciel, après avoir, par l’Esprit Saint, donné ses instructions aux Apôtres qu’il avait choisis. C’est à eux qu’il s’est présenté vivant après sa Passion ; il leur en a donné bien des preuves, puisque, pendant quarante jours, il leur est apparu et leur a parlé du royaume de Dieu. Au cours d’un repas qu’il prenait avec eux, il leur donna l’ordre de ne pas quitter Jérusalem, mais d’y attendre que s’accomplisse la promesse du Père. Il déclara : « Cette promesse, vous l’avez entendue de ma bouche : alors que Jean a baptisé avec l’eau, vous, c’est dans l’Esprit Saint que vous serez baptisés d’ici peu de jours. » Ainsi réunis, les Apôtres l’interrogeaient : « Seigneur, est-ce maintenant le temps où tu vas rétablir le royaume pour Israël ? » Jésus leur répondit : « Il ne vous appartient pas de connaître les temps et les moments que le Père a fixés de sa propre autorité. Deuxième lecture (Ep 4, 1-13)
Frères, moi qui suis en prison à cause du Seigneur, je vous exhorte donc à vous conduire d’une manière digne de votre vocation : ayez beaucoup d’humilité, de douceur et de patience, supportez-vous les uns les autres avec amour ; ayez soin de garder l’unité dans l’Esprit par le lien de la paix. Comme votre vocation vous a tous appelés à une seule espérance, de même il y a un seul Corps et un seul Esprit. Il y a un seul Seigneur, une seule foi, un seul baptême, un seul Dieu et Père de tous, au-dessus de tous, par tous, et en tous. À chacun d’entre nous, la grâce a été donnée selon la mesure du don fait par le Christ. C’est pourquoi l’Écriture dit : Il est monté sur la hauteur, il a capturé des captifs, il a fait des dons aux hommes. Que veut dire : Il est monté ? – Cela veut dire qu’il était d’abord descendu dans les régions inférieures de la terre. Et celui qui était descendu est le même qui est monté au-dessus de tous les cieux pour remplir l’univers. Et les dons qu’il a faits , ce sont les Apôtres, et aussi les prophètes, les évangélisateurs, les pasteurs et ceux qui enseignent. De cette manière, les fidèles sont organisés pour que les tâches du ministère soient accomplies et que se construise le corps du Christ, jusqu’à ce que nous parvenions tous ensemble à l’unité dans la foi et la pleine connaissance du Fils de Dieu, à l’état de l’Homme parfait, à la stature du Christ dans sa plénitude. – Parole du Seigneur.

En ce temps-là, Jésus ressuscité se manifesta aux onze Apôtres et leur dit : « Allez dans le monde entier. Proclamez l’Évangile à toute la création. Celui qui croira et sera baptisé sera sauvé ; celui qui refusera de croire sera condamné. Voici les signes qui accompagneront ceux qui deviendront croyants : en mon nom, ils expulseront les démons ; ils parleront en langues nouvelles ; ils prendront des serpents dans leurs mains et, s’ils boivent un poison mortel, il ne leur fera pas de mal ; ils imposeront les mains aux malades, et les malades s’en trouveront bien. » Le Seigneur Jésus, après leur avoir parlé, fut enlevé au ciel et s’assit à la droite de Dieu. Quant à eux, ils s’en allèrent proclamer partout l’Évangile. Le Seigneur travaillait avec eux et confirmait la Parole par les signes qui l’accompagnaient. – Acclamons la Parole de Dieu.

Sts Alban, Julius and Aaron
Immaculate Heart of Mary
During a persecution by Diocletian, Alban surrendered himself in place of a Christian priest, and so unbaptised by water, attained a baptism of blood. In the same persecution Julius and Aaron, at Caerleon on Usk, are named among others who gave their lives for the faith.

First reading: 2 Chronicles 24:17-25
After the death of Jehoiada, the officials of Judah came to pay court to the king, and the king now turned to them for advice. The Judaeans abandoned the Temple of the Lord, the God of their ancestors, for the worship of sacred poles and idols. Because of their guilt, God’s anger fell on Judah and Jerusalem. He sent them prophets to bring them back to the Lord, but when these gave their message, they would not listen. The spirit of God took possession of Zechariah son of Jehoiada the priest. He stood up before the people and said, ‘God says this, “Why do you transgress the commandments of the Lord to no good purpose? You have deserted the Lord, now he deserts you.”’ They then plotted against him and by order of the king stoned him in the court of the Temple of the Lord. King Joash, forgetful of the kindness that Jehoiada, the father of Zechariah, had shown him, killed Jehoiada’s son who cried out as he died, ‘The Lord sees and he will avenge!’ When a year had gone by, the Aramaean army made war on Joash. They reached Judah and Jerusalem, and executed all the officials among the people, sending back to the king at Damascus all that they had plundered from them. Though the Aramaean army had by no means come in force, the Lord delivered into its power an army of great size for having deserted him, the God of their ancestors. The Aramaeans treated Joash as he had deserved, and when they retired they left him a very sick man; and his officers, plotting against him to avenge the death of the son of Jehoiada the priest, murdered him in his bed. So he died, and they buried him in the Citadel of David, though not in the tombs of the kings.

Gospel: Luke 2:41-51
Every year the parents of Jesus used to go to Jerusalem for the feast of the Passover. When he was twelve years old, they went up for the feast as usual. When they were on their way home after the feast, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem without his parents knowing it. They assumed he was with the caravan, and it was only after a day’s journey that they went to look for him among their relations and acquaintances. When they failed to find him they went back to Jerusalem looking for him everywhere. Three days later, they found him in the Temple, sitting among the doctors, listening to them, and asking them questions; and all those who heard him were astounded at his intelligence and his replies. They were overcome when they saw him, and his mother said to him, ‘My child, why have, you done this to us? See how worried your father and I have been, looking for you.’ ‘Why were you looking for me?’ he replied. ‘Did you not know that I must be busy with my Father’s affairs?’ But they did not understand what he meant. He then went down with them and came to Nazareth and lived under their authority. His mother stored up all these things in her heart.

Having been made partakers of eternal redemption, we pray, O Lord, that we, who commemorate the Mother of your Son, may glory in the fullness of your grace and experience its continued increase for our salvation. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
In today’s Gospel we read the episode where the child Jesus was lost and later found in the Temple when he was twelve years old. It is also the fifth Joyful mystery of the Rosary. Only male children aged twelve were required to make this journey and Jesus’ parents, being observant Jews tried to fulfil their obligations. It is usually a frustrating experience when a parent loses their child in a crowd, and this must have been the same with Mary and Joseph. Mary knew that there was something special about her son just as the teachers in the temple marvelled at his wisdom. Mary had a special role in the life of her Son as he grew in stature and wisdom under his parents’ authority. Jesus’ reply about being in his father’s house was not easy for the parents to understand but Mary kept all these things in her heart. We, on our part lose Jesus due to sin and this passage assures us that if we search we shall find Him.

St Bernardino of Siena (1380 – 1444)
Bernardino (“Little Bernard”) was born in Tuscany. His parents died when he was a child. Inspired by St Vincent Ferrer, he was an energetic and popular preacher. He denounced usury, promoted peace and worked hard for the reform and discipline of the Franciscan order, and for church unity.

Paul’s escort took him as far as Athens, and went back with instructions for Silas and Timothy to rejoin Paul as soon as they could. So Paul stood before the whole Council of the Areopagus and made this speech: ‘Men of Athens, I have seen for myself how extremely scrupulous you are in all religious matters, because I noticed, as I strolled round admiring your sacred monuments, that you had an altar inscribed: To An Unknown God. Well, the God whom I proclaim is in fact the one whom you already worship without knowing it. ‘Since the God who made the world and everything in it is himself Lord of heaven and earth, he does not make his home in shrines made by human hands. Nor is he dependent on anything that human hands can do for him, since he can never be in need of anything; on the contrary, it is he who gives everything – including life and breath – to everyone. Meditation
The assertion Jesus makes in today’s gospel shows the experience of the first communities. In the measure in which they sought to imitate, interpret and apply his word to the various circumstances of their life, they experienced the presence and the light of the Spirit. This also happens today in communities which try to incarnate the Word of Jesus in their life. The root of this experience is Jesus’ message: “everything the Father has is mine that is why I said “all He reveals to you will be taken from what is mine.” John uses many images and symbols to signify the action of the Holy Spirit. The instructions Jesus gave are simple, yet difficult to bear out in total fulfilment. How do I let the Holy Spirit strengthen me and help me to devote myself to his works?

Son ardente dévotion au nom de Jésus, figuré par les lettres IHS, fut le prétexte dont se servirent ses ennemis pour le calomnier et jeter le soupçon sur sa foi, sans pouvoir troubler sa sérénité.

En effet, en me promenant et en observant vos monuments sacrés, j’ai même trouvé un autel avec cette inscription : “Au dieu inconnu.” Or, ce que vous vénérez sans le connaître, voilà ce que, moi, je viens vous annoncer. Le Dieu qui a fait le monde et tout ce qu’il contient, lui qui est Seigneur du ciel et de la terre, n’habite pas des sanctuaires faits de main d’homme ; il n’est pas non plus servi par des mains humaines, comme s’il avait besoin de quoi que ce soit, lui qui donne à tous la vie, le souffle et tout le nécessaire. À partir d’un seul homme, il a fait tous les peuples pour qu’ils habitent sur toute la surface de la terre, fixant les moments de leur histoire et les limites de leur habitat ; Dieu les a faits pour qu’ils le cherchent et, si possible, l’atteignent et le trouvent, lui qui, en fait, n’est pas loin de chacun de nous. St Dunstan (909 – 988)
He was born near Glastonbury, a member of a noble family. He became a monk of Glastonbury, where he later became abbot. He was the principal agent in the restoration of English monasticism following the devastation of the Viking invasions.

First reading: Acts 16:22-34
The crowd joined in and showed their hostility to Paul and Silas, so the magistrates had them stripped and ordered them to be flogged. They were given many lashes and then thrown into prison, and the gaoler was told to keep a close watch on them. So, following his instructions, he threw them into the inner prison and fastened their feet in the stocks. Late that night Paul and Silas were praying and singing God’s praises, while the other prisoners listened. Suddenly there was an earthquake that shook the prison to its foundations. All the doors flew open and the chains fell from all the prisoners. When the gaoler woke and saw the doors wide open he drew his sword and was about to commit suicide, presuming that the prisoners had escaped. But Paul shouted at the top of his voice, ‘Don’t do yourself any harm; we are all here.’ The gaoler called for lights, then rushed in, threw himself trembling at the feet of Paul and Silas, and escorted them out, saying, ‘Sirs, what must I do to be saved?’ They told him, ‘Become a believer in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, and your household too.’ Then they preached the word of the Lord to him and to all his family. Late as it was, he took them to wash their wounds, and was baptised then and there with all his household. Afterwards he took them home and gave them a meal, and the whole family celebrated their conversion to belief in God.

Gospel: John 16:5-11

Still, I must tell you the truth: it is for your own good that I am going because unless I go, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I do go, I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will show the world how wrong it was, about sin, and about who was in the right, and about judgement: about sin: proved by their refusal to believe in me; about who was in the right: proved by my going to the Father and your seeing me no more; about judgement: proved by the prince of this world being already condemned.’

Meditation
Today’s gospel focuses on the sadness of the disciples. Jesus begins with a rhetorical question that makes evident the sadness of the disciples in the light of detachment from Jesus. It is clear that for the disciples, the detachment from the lifestyle led with Jesus implies suffering. Jesus acknowledges this, saying “yet you are sad at heart because I have told you this”. The disciples were afraid of losing the visible presence, they were aggrieved and saddened at the thought that their eyes would no longer be consoled in seeing him. Jesus tries to dispel this sadness by promising to send them the Paraclete. His departure and the detachment of the disciples makes possible the coming of the Paraclete.
