Saint Cyril of Alexandria, Bishop and Doctor of the Church was born at Alexandria, Egypt. He was nephew of the patriarch of that city, Theophilus. Cyril wrote treatises that clarified the doctrines of the Trinity and the Incarnation from heretical interpretations.
Entrance Antiphon : Ps 32: 11, 19
The designs of his Heart are from age to age, to rescue their souls from death, and to keep them alive in famine.
Collect
Grant, we pray, almighty God, that we, who glory in the Heart of your beloved Son and recall the wonders of his love for us, may be made worthy to receive an overflowing measure of grace from that fount of heavenly gifts. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
First reading : Ezekiel 34:11-16
The Lord God says this: I am going to look after my flock myself and keep all of it in view. As a shepherd keeps all his flock in view when he stands up in the middle of his scattered sheep, so shall I keep my sheep in view. I shall rescue them from wherever they have been scattered during the mist and darkness. I shall bring them out of the countries where they are; I shall gather them together from foreign countries and bring them back to their own land. I shall pasture them on the mountains of Israel, in the ravines and in every inhabited place in the land. I shall feed them in good pasturage; the high mountains of Israel will be their grazing ground. There they will rest in good grazing ground; they will browse in rich pastures on the mountains of Israel. I myself will pasture my sheep, I myself will show them where to rest – it is the Lord who speaks. I shall look for the lost one, bring back the stray, bandage the wounded and make the weak strong. I shall watch over the fat and healthy. I shall be a true shepherd to them.

Second reading: Romans 5:5-11
The love of God has been poured into our hearts by the Holy Spirit which has been given us. We were still helpless when at his appointed moment Christ died for sinful men. It is not easy to die even for a good man – though of course for someone really worthy, a man might be prepared to die – but what proves that God loves us is that Christ died for us while we were still sinners. Having died to make us righteous, is it likely that he would now fail to save us from God’s anger? When we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, we were still enemies; now that we have been reconciled, surely we may count on being saved by the life of his Son? Not merely because we have been reconciled but because we are filled with joyful trust in God, through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have already gained our reconciliation.

Gospel : Luke 15:3-7
Jesus spoke this parable to the scribes and Pharisees: ‘What man among you with a hundred sheep, losing one, would not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness and go after the missing one till he found it? And when he found it, would he not joyfully take it on his shoulders and then, when he got home, call together his friends and neighbours? “Rejoice with me,” he would say “I have found my sheep that was lost.” In the same way, I tell you, there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one repentant sinner than over ninety-nine virtuous men who have no need of repentance.’
Prayer over the Offerings
Look, O Lord, we pray, on the surpassing charity in the Heart of your beloved Son, that what we offer may be a gift acceptable to you and an expiation of our offences. Through Christ our Lord.

Prayer after Communion
May this sacrament of charity, O Lord, make us fervent with the fire of holy love, so that, drawn always to your Son, we may learn to see him in our neighbour. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
When we celebrate the Sacred Heart of Jesus, we commemorate God’s boundless love, which finds its ultimate expression in Jesus. The image of the shepherd is employed in both the Second Reading and the Gospel to express God’s love for us. Ezekiel portrays God as a shepherd who diligently cares for his sheep, protecting them from harm, and leading them to greener pastures. In the Gospel, Jesus goes even further, depicting God as the shepherd who cares for each sheep. He is willing to leave 99 sheep to go in search of a missing sheep, and upon finding it, rejoices. This reveals the nature of God as a caring and providing Father, who gave his Son to atone for our sins. He desires for us to inherit eternal life in his heavenly kingdom. With such a God on our side, we are truly blessed. In the face of challenges, we can declare with the Psalmist, “The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want.” Let us express our gratitude to God for loving us to this point, and let us face the challenges of life with the assurance that we have a loving Father who is always by our side.

1ère lecture : Ez 34,11-16
Car ainsi parle le Seigneur Dieu : Voici que moi-même, je m’occuperai de mes brebis, et je veillerai sur elles. Comme un berger veille sur les brebis de son troupeau quand elles sont dispersées, ainsi je veillerai sur mes brebis, et j’irai les délivrer dans tous les endroits où elles ont été dispersées un jour de nuages et de sombres nuées. 2ème lecture : Rm 5,5b-11
Bien-aimés, l’espérance ne déçoit pas, puisque l’amour de Dieu a été répandu dans nos coeurs par l’Esprit Saint qui nous a été donné. Alors que nous n’étions encore capables de rien, le Christ, au temps fixé par Dieu, est mort pour les impies que nous étions. Accepter de mourir pour un homme juste, c’est déjà difficile ; peut-être quelqu’un s’exposerait-il à mourir pour un homme de bien. Or, la preuve que Dieu nous aime, c’est que le Christ est mort pour nous, alors que nous étions encore pécheurs. À plus forte raison, maintenant que le sang du Christ nous a fait devenir des justes, serons-nous sauvés par lui de la colère de Dieu. En effet, si nous avons été réconciliés avec Dieu par la mort de son Fils alors que nous étions ses ennemis, à plus forte raison, maintenant que nous sommes réconciliés, serons-nous sauvés en ayant part à sa vie. Bien plus, nous mettons notre fierté en Dieu, par notre Seigneur Jésus Christ, par qui, maintenant, nous avons reçu la réconciliation.

Évangile : Lc 15,3-7
Alors Jésus leur dit cette parabole : « Si l’un de vous a cent brebis et qu’il en perd une, n’abandonne-t-il pas les quatre-vingt-dix-neuf autres dans le désert pour aller chercher celle qui est perdue, jusqu’à ce qu’il la retrouve ? Quand il l’a retrouvée, il la prend sur ses épaules, tout joyeux, et, de retour chez lui, il rassemble ses amis et ses voisins pour leur dire : “Réjouissez-vous avec moi, car j’ai retrouvé ma brebis, celle qui était perdue !” Je vous le dis : C’est ainsi qu’il y aura de la joie dans le ciel pour un seul pécheur qui se convertit, plus que pour quatre-vingt-dix-neuf justes qui n’ont pas besoin de conversion.

Méditation
Le Cœur de Jésus est un refuge pour tous ceux qui le désire. Porté par l’amour et la miséricorde qui réside en lui, le Christ sans cesse va à la recherche de ses brebis perdues. Jour et nuit Il fouille les coins et recoins de celles-ci pour les déloger de leurs prisons Intérieures, de leurs ténèbres afin que voyant de nouveau la lumière, elles se réjouissent et bénissent son Père qui est aux cieux et qui les lui a confiées. Ainsi, il est bon pour tous ceux et celles qui se reconnaissent ses brebis de s’ouvrir à sa voix qui retenti sans cesse aux oreilles de leurs cœurs, les appelant à venir s’abreuver dans l’océan de son amour et de sa miséricorde.

Saint Anthelm of Belley (1107–1178)

Anthelm was born in 1107 in a castle near Chambery, in Savoy, France. He was a prior of the Carthusian Grand Chartreuse and bishop of Belley. In liturgical art, Anthelm is depicted with a lamp lit by a divine hand. He was remarkable for monastic reforms.

The Lord is the strength of his people, a saving refuge for the one he has anointed. Save your people, Lord, and bless your heritage, and govern them for ever.

First reading: Genesis 16:1-12,15-16
Abram’s wife Sarai had borne him no child, but she had an Egyptian maidservant named Hagar. So Sarai said to Abram, ‘Listen, now! Since the Lord has kept me from having children, go to my slave-girl. Perhaps I shall get children through her.’ Abram agreed to what Sarai had said. Thus after Abram had lived in the land of Canaan for ten years Sarai took Hagar her Egyptian slave-girl and gave her to Abram as his wife. He went to Hagar and she conceived. Gospel Matthew 7:21-29
The wise man built his house on a rock Jesus said to his disciples: ‘It is not those who say to me, “Lord, Lord,” who will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the person who does the will of my Father in heaven. When the day comes many will say to me, “Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, cast out demons in your name, work many miracles in your name?” Then I shall tell them to their faces: I have never known you; away from me, you evil men!
‘Therefore, everyone who listens to these words of mine and acts on them will be like a sensible man who built his house on rock. Rain came down, floods rose, gales blew and hurled themselves against that house, and it did not fall: it was founded on rock. But everyone who listens to these words of mine and does not act on them will be like a stupid man who built his house on sand. Rain came down, floods rose, gales blew and struck that house, and it fell; and what a fall it had!’ Jesus had now finished what he wanted to say, and his teaching made a deep impression on the people because he taught them with authority, and not like their own scribes.

Meditation
There is a song that goes: Christ is my rock, my refuge, my stronghold. We should build the houses of our lives on a solid, rocky foundation, that is, on Jesus. In other words, we should place him at the centre of our lives. We should commune with him daily in prayer and meditation. We should let his Word guide our words and actions. We should incarnate and promote the values of the Gospel. In short, we should live in accordance with the will of God. When we reject his will in favour of our own, our lives fall apart. Abram experienced this. Instead of waiting for God to fulfil his promise of giving him a son, he chose to listen to his wife Sarai and have a child by Hagar, her slave-girl. The result chaos in his household; Hagar, began to despise Sarai, and in retaliation, Sarai treated her so badly that she ran away. When we listen to God’s Word and act on it, we succeed in everything we undertake. Trials come and go, but we stand firm.

il établira sa demeure face à tous ses frères. » Agar enfanta un fils à Abram, qui lui donna le nom d’Ismaël. Abram avait 86 ans quand Agar lui enfanta Ismaël.

Écartez- vous de moi, vous qui commettez le mal !” Ainsi, celui qui entend les paroles que je dis là et les met en pratique est comparable à un homme prévoyant qui a construit sa maison sur le roc. La pluie est tombée, les torrents ont dévalé, les vents ont soufflé et se sont abattus sur cette maison ; la maison ne s’est pas écroulée, car elle était fondée sur le roc. Et celui qui entend de moi ces paroles sans les mettre en pratique est comparable à un homme insensé
qui a construit sa maison sur le sable. La pluie est tombée, les torrents ont dévalé, les vents ont soufflé, ils sont venus battre cette maison ; la maison s’est écroulée,
et son écroulement a été complet. » Lorsque Jésus eut terminé ce discours, les foules restèrent frappées de son enseignement, car il les enseignait en homme qui a autorité, et non pas comme leurs scribes.

Accepte, Seigneur, le sacrifice de louange et de pardon, afin que nos cœurs, purifiés par sa puissance, t’offrent un amour qui réponde à ton amour. Par Jésus.

Méditation
De nos jours nombreux sont ceux-là qui pensent qu’il y une dichotomie entre la prière et la vie qu’on mène. Ceux qui croient qu’on peut garder le mal au frais le temps de la prière pour ensuite y revenir. Dans cette vision, aucune des prières ne pourra faire effet. Ainsi, le « ora et labora » dont parle saint Benoit revient à mettre en application dans notre vie la prière que nous émettons chaque jour devant Dieu, à forger notre travail et notre sur le roc éternel qu’est le Christ.

Je m’en vais sans enfant, et l’héritier de ma maison, c’est Élièzer de Damas. » Abram dit encore : « Tu ne m’as pas donné de descendance, et c’est un de mes serviteurs qui sera mon héritier.» Alors cette parole du Seigneur fut adressée à Abram : « Ce n’est pas lui qui sera ton héritier, mais quelqu’un de ton sang. » Puis il le fit sortir et lui dit: « Regarde le ciel, et compte les étoiles, si tu le peux… » Et il déclara : « Telle sera ta descendance! » Abram eut foi dans le Seigneur et le Seigneur estima qu’il était juste. Puis il dit : « Je suis le Seigneur, qui t’ai fait sortir d’Our en Chaldée pour te donner ce pays en héritage. » Abram répondit : « Seigneur mon Dieu, comment vais-je savoir que je l’ai en héritage ? » Le Seigneur lui dit : « Prends-moi une génisse de trois ans, une chèvre de trois ans, un bélier de trois ans, une tourterelle et une jeune colombe. » Abram prit tous ces animaux, les partagea en deux, et plaça chaque moitié en face de l’autre ; mais il ne partagea pas les oiseaux. Comme les rapaces descendaient sur les cadavres, Abram les chassa. Au coucher du soleil, un sommeil mystérieux tomba sur Abram, une sombre et profonde frayeur tomba sur lui. Après le coucher du soleil, il y eut des ténèbres épaisses. Alors un brasier fumant et une torche enflammée passèrent entre les morceaux d’animaux. Ce jour-là, le Seigneur conclut une alliance avec Abram en ces termes : « À ta descendance je donne le pays que voici, depuis le Torrent d’Égypte jusqu’au Grand Fleuve, l’Euphrate. »

Tant de chrétien aujourd’hui court derriere les miracles au lieu de chercher Dieu. Il oublie que même le diable est capable de faire des miracles mais des miracles pour les perdre, leurs donnant ce qui est éffémère pour prendre ce qui est éternel chez eux: leur salut. A cet effet, les textes de ce jours Invitent chacun à ne pas courir vers ce qui brille mais aussi à discerner sur ce qui est proposé. ce n’est nullement un manque de foi de chercher à mieux comprendre ce qui nous est fait comme promesse. il faut savoir dans sa vie de foi «croire pour comprendre et comprendre pour croire» comme le dit saint Anselme.

Meditation
“You will be able to tell them by their fruits.” Human relationships often involve hypocrisy, with people pretending to be something they are not. Some who claim to be friends may abandon us in times of need, while others we expect to be morally upright (spiritual leaders, for example) may be involved in scandals. Individuals who appear to be nice to their partners before marriage may undergo changes after tying the knot. Today, Jesus cautions us to be vigilant in our interactions with others. It is crucial to be observant and cautious because, sooner or later, people reveal their true selves through their actions. More importantly, it is essential to examine ourselves and ensure that we are not hypocrites ourselves. We should strive for honesty and sincerity, presenting ourselves authentically to others. We should learn to tell people the truth even if it may not align with what they want to hear. Such authentic behaviour stems from a life of faith. Let us ask God to give us the faith of Abraham, who believed God’s promises even though they were humanly impossible. May God grant us a similar faith which will inspire us to live authentic lives.

Quand fut accompli le temps où Élisabeth devait enfanter, elle mit au monde un fils. Ses voisins et sa famille apprirent que le Seigneur lui avait montré la grandeur de sa miséricorde, et ils se réjouissaient avec elle. Le huitième jour, ils vinrent pour la circoncision de l’enfant. Ils voulaient l’appeler Zacharie, du nom de son père. Mais sa mère prit la parole et déclara : « Non, il s’appellera Jean. » On lui dit: « Personne dans ta famille ne porte ce nom-là ! » On demandait par signes au père comment il voulait l’appeler. Il se fit donner une tablette sur laquelle il écrivit : « Jean est son nom. » Et tout le monde en fut étonné. A l’instant même, sa bouche s’ouvrit, sa langue se délia: il parlait et il bénissait Dieu. La crainte saisit alors tous les gens du voisinage et, dans toute la région montagneuse de Judée, on racontait tous ces événements. Tous ceux qui les apprenaient les conservaient dans leur cœur et disaient : « Que sera donc cet enfant ? » En effet, la main du Seigneur était avec lui. L’enfant grandissait et son esprit se fortifiait. Il alla vivre au désert jusqu’au jour où il se fit connaître à Israël.

Depart sa vie, Jean est présenté comme un modele d’humilité parce qu’il à su annoncé le Christ en s’éffacant; se diminuer pour qu’il croisse. Ainsi tous sont appellés à prendre exemple sur son style de vie afin de tender plus aisément vers le Christ

Meditation
“The Lord called me before I was born, from my mother’s womb he pronounced my name.” As we celebrate the birth of John the Baptist, it is crucial to recall that God chose and named him from birth, consecrating him for the mission of preparing God’s people for the coming of Jesus. You, too, share a similar divine perspective as John the Baptist. God knew you by name before your birth, and consecrated you. Your birth is not an accident; you were born for a purpose. God has endowed you with gifts and talents, providing opportunities in your life because he intends to use you to make a meaningful impact in this world. Take time to reflect on your life today and seek God’s guidance regarding the purpose of your existence. Ask Him to help you uncover your potential and discern how you can contribute positively to the world around you. Surrender yourself at His will and ask Him to mold you into an instrument capable of transforming the lives of those you encounter, facilitating their encounter with Him through you.

“Leave your country, your family, and your father’s house.” God demanded a radical shift from Abram, instructing him to abandon his familiar life and everything he knew, and embark on a journey to an unfamiliar and unknown land. It is worth noting that Abram never returned to his country after responding to God’s call. Similarly, our Christian calling is marked by this radical shift. God expects us to abandon our old way of life without the prospect of ever turning back. We are called to embrace a new mindset, new perspectives, and new values. It entails that we stop living the way the world expects us to live and start living the way God wants us to live. For instance, while the world may encourage us to criticise and label others as evil because of their faults, God urges us to recognise our own imperfections and so transform our lives first before helping others change. When you were baptised, God called you like He called Abram. Accept His invitation to leave your old life behind and undergo a transformative change.

Il prit sa femme Saraï, son neveu Loth, tous les biens qu’ils avaient acquis, et les personnes dont ils s’étaient entourés à Harane ; ils se mirent en route pour Canaan et ils arrivèrent dans ce pays. Abram traversa le pays jusqu’au lieu nommé Sichem, au Chêne de Moré. Les Cananéens étaient alors dans le pays. Le Seigneur apparut à Abram et dit : « À ta descendance je donnerai ce pays. » Et là, Abram bâtit un autel au Seigneur qui lui était apparu. De là, il se rendit dans la montagne, à l’est de Béthel, et il planta sa tente, ayant Béthel à l’ouest, et Aï à l’est. Là, il bâtit un autel au Seigneur et il invoqua le nom du Seigneur. Puis, de campement en campement, Abram s’en alla vers le Néguev.

R/ Heureux le peuple que le Seigneur s’est choisi pour domaine.
Heureux le peuple dont le Seigneur est le Dieu, heureuse la nation qu’il s’est choisie pour domaine ! Du haut des cieux, le Seigneur regarde : il voit la race des hommes.
Dieu veille sur ceux qui le craignent, qui mettent leur espoir en son amour, pour les délivrer de la mort, les garder en vie aux jours de famine.
Nous attendons notre vie du Seigneur : il est pour nous un appui, un bouclier. Que ton amour, Seigneur, soit sur nous comme notre espoir est en toi !

Évangile : Mt 7, 1-5
En ce temps-là, Jésus disait à ses disciples : « Ne jugez pas, pour ne pas être jugés ; de la manière dont vous jugez, vous serez jugés ; de la mesure dont vous mesurez, on vous mesurera. Quoi ! tu regardes la paille dans l’œil de ton frère ; et la poutre qui est dans ton œil, tu ne la remarques pas ? Ou encore: Comment vas- tu dire à ton frère: “Laisse- moi enlever la paille de ton œil”, alors qu’il y a une poutre dans ton œil à toi? Hypocrite! Enlève d’abord la poutre de ton œil ; alors tu verras clair pour enlever la paille qui est dans l’œil de ton frère. »

Accepte, Seigneur, le sacrifice de louange et de pardon, afin que nos cœurs, purifiés par sa puissance, t’offrent un amour qui réponde à ton amour. Par Jésus.

Prière après la communion
Renouvelés par le corps et le sang de ton Fils, nous implorons ta bonté, Seigneur : fais qu’à jamais rachetés, nous possédions dans ton Royaume ce que nous célébrons en chaque Eucharistie. Par Jésus.
Méditation
Le paradoxe qu’on observe bien souvent dans le comportement de beaucoup de chrétien c’est le fait de vivre sa foi en ayant les yeux rivés sur le comportement des autres. Ceux-là sont prompts à scruter scrupuleusement les agir d’autrui faisant fi des leurs qui sont souvent si grave. Dans une vraie vie de foi, il ne doit pas en être ainsi. Chacun devrait luter d’abord pour sa conversion personnelle avant de se tourner vers celle des autres ; enlevé d’abord la poutre de son œil avant de prétendre enlever la paille qui est dans l’œil de son frère nous dit l’Evangile de ce jour.
