First reading: 2 Corinthians 5:14-21
The love of Christ overwhelms us when we reflect that if one man has died for all, then all men should be dead; and the reason he died for all was so that living men should live no longer for themselves, but for him who died and was raised to life for them. From now onwards, therefore, we do not judge anyone by the standards of the flesh. Even if we did once know Christ in the flesh, that is not how we know him now. And for anyone who is in Christ, there is a new creation; the old creation has gone, and now the new one is here. It is all God’s work. It was God who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the work of handing on this reconciliation. In other words, God in Christ was reconciling the world to himself, not holding men’s faults against them, and he has entrusted to us the news that they are reconciled. So we are ambassadors for Christ; it is as though God were appealing through us, and the appeal that we make in Christ’s name is: be reconciled to God. For our sake God made the sinless one into sin, so that in him we might become the goodness of God.

Meditation
“The Lord is compassion and love, slow to anger and rich in mercy.” God manifests his love for us through His mercy. Even though we deserve damnation for our sins, God does not judge us solely based on our faults. Instead, He has reconciled us to Himself through the death and resurrection of His Son, Jesus Christ. Through this divine act, He has transformed us into a new creation, renewing us and adopting us as His sons and daughters. Reflection on this profound reality is a daily practice for Christians; being a Christian means acknowledging that God forgives our sins and adopts us as His beloved children. Take time today to express thanks to God for this act of love and mercy. Additionally, be mindful that God has appointed you as His ambassador, and entrusted you to carry this message of His love to those around you. Invite others to embrace God’s love and reconcile themselves to Him. As a new creation, live in accordance with God’s will, abstaining from all forms of sin. This includes being a person of integrity in your words. When you speak, say what you mean and mean what you say, embodying the principles of truthfulness and reliability.

Né à Lisbonne, Fernand fut d’abord chanoine régulier à Coïmbre. Il prit le nom d’Antoine quand il entra chez les Franciscains. D’abord retiré dans la solitude, il se voua ensuite à la prédication. Grâce à ses dons d’orateur et à la connaissance de l’Ecriture, son ministère fut fécond et justifie son titre de ‘’docteur évangélique’’.

Les sages brilleront comme la splendeur du firmament, et ceux qui sont des maîtres de justice pour la multitude resplendiront comme des étoiles, dans les siècles des siècles.
Prière d’ouverture
Dieu éternel et tout-puissant, tu as voulu que ton peuple trouve en saint Antoine de Padoue un grand prédicateur de l’Évangile et un défenseur des pauvres ; permets qu’avec son aide, et fidèles à ses leçons de vie chrétienne, nous ressentions dans toutes nos épreuves le bienfait de ton secours. 1ère lecture : 2 Co 4, 7-15
Frères, nous portons un trésor comme dans des vases d’argile ; ainsi, on voit bien que cette puissance extraordinaire appartient à Dieu et ne vient pas de nous. En toute circonstance, nous sommes dans la détresse, mais sans être angoissés ; nous sommes déconcertés, mais non désemparés ; nous sommes pourchassés, mais non pas abandonnés ; terrassés, mais non pas anéantis. Toujours nous portons, dans notre corps, la mort de Jésus, afin que la vie de Jésus, elle aussi, soit manifestée dans notre corps. En effet, nous, les vivants, nous sommes continuellement livrés à la mort à cause de Jésus, afin que la vie de Jésus, elle aussi, soit manifestée dans notre condition charnelle vouée à la mort. Méditation La fragilité humaine est si immense que parfois l’homme est porté à prendre des décisions qui pour lui semblent juste et de bonne motivation alors qu’il ne fait qu’exprimer cette fragilité et son sentiment de soif de sécurité. Dans ce sens saint Paul interpelle les consciences sur cette fragilité qui appuyé sur le Christ trouve tout son pesant d’or, car sa présence est force pour celui qui croit.

Saint Antony of Padua (1195 – 1231)

Saint Antony was first of all an Augustinian monk, and later a Franciscan. Illness prevented him going to Africa to preach. His sermons are full of gentleness, but he reproved the wicked with fearless severity – especially backsliding clergy and the oppressors of the weak.

In the midst of the Church he opened his mouth, and the Lord filled him with the spirit of wisdom and understanding and clothed him in a robe of glory.

Almighty ever-living God, who gave Saint Anthony of Padua to your people as an outstanding preacher and an intercessor in their need, grant that, with his assistance, as we follow the teachings of the Christian life, we may know your help in every trial. We are only the earthenware jars that hold this treasure, to make it clear that such an overwhelming power comes from God and not from us. We are in difficulties on all sides, but never cornered; we see no answer to our problems, but never despair; we have been persecuted, but never deserted; knocked down, but never killed; always, wherever we may be, we carry with us in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus, too, may always be seen in our body. Meditation
“If your right eye should cause you to sin, tear it out and throw it away.” Jesus is not asking us to pluck out our eyes or cut off our hands, He is merely urging us to eliminate habits, attitudes, and even certain relationships that lead us down the path to sin. We all have aspects of our lives that need transformation – bad habits to break, places to avoid, certain “friends” whose influence may not be conducive to our spiritual well-being. Developing intimacy with God entails pruning; just as we prune a branch to bear more fruit. We must cleanse ourselves of anything or anyone standing between us and God. This is a long and painful but necessary process. If we resolve to embark on this path, we can be assured that God will support us. Just as God stood by Saint Paul and his companions through the difficulties they faced in spreading the Gospel, He will guide us through the difficult task of purifying our thoughts, words, and deeds, provided we turn to Him for help.

Onuphrius lived as a hermit in the desert for seventy years. In the desert he suffered much from privation of food and drink, and also from many temptations. He spent his life praying and working until his death at the age of ninety. It was about the year 400.

Since we have by an act of mercy been entrusted with this work of administration, there is no weakening on our part. If our gospel does not penetrate the veil, then the veil is on those who are not on the way to salvation; the unbelievers whose minds the god of this world has blinded, to stop them seeing the light shed by the Good News of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. For it is not ourselves that we are preaching, but Christ Jesus as the Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake. It is the same God that said, ‘Let there be light shining out of darkness’, who has shone in our minds to radiate the light of the knowledge of God’s glory, the glory on the face of Christ.

But I say this to you: anyone who is angry with his brother will answer for it before the court; if a man calls his brother “Fool” he will answer for it before the Sanhedrin; and if a man calls him “Renegade” he will answer for it in hell fire. So then, if you are bringing your offering to the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your offering there before the altar, go and be reconciled with your brother first, and then come back and present your offering. Come to terms with your opponent in good time while you are still on the way to the court with him, or he may hand you over to the judge and the judge to the officer, and you will be thrown into prison. Meditation
“If your virtue goes no deeper than that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never get into the kingdom of heaven.” Jesus regularly accuses the Pharisees for hypocrisy, that is, acting to attract attention whereas their hearts remain distant from God. To surpass the virtue of the Pharisees, our commitment must extend beyond mere words and actions. God’s Word must penetrate our very hearts, the source of all our words and actions. We must let Christ transform our hearts, so that our lives too will be transformed. It is not enough not to kill; we must rid our hearts of the anger and resentment that drive destructive words and actions towards others. As we often say of witchcraft in our society, the essence lies not only in manipulating mystical powers but in the jealousy and wickedness we harbour in our hearts that propel us to seek the means to harm others. Let us invite the Holy Spirit to purify our hearts and cleanse us of all evil intentions, so that Christ’s image may be imprinted forever in our lives.

Le titre d’Apôtre ne signifie pas que Joseph, surnommé Barnabé (c’est-à-dire ‘’fils d’encouragement’’), ait été l’un des Douze, mais qu’il joua un rôle capital dans la diffusion de l’Evangile. En entrant dans la communauté chrétienne, cet homme de foi a mis tous ses biens à la disposition des Apôtres.
Antienne d’ouverture : Ac 11, 24
Heureux, saint Barnabé, qui fut digne d’être compté parmi les apôtres : c’était un homme de bien, rempli de l’Esprit Saint et de foi.
Prière d’ouverture
Dieu qui as dit de mettre à part saint Barnabé, cet homme plein de foi et de l’Esprit Saint, pour qu’il porte aux païens le message du salut ; fais que l’Évangile du Christ, dont saint Barnabé fut l’Apôtre courageux, soit encore annoncé fidèlement en paroles et en actes. Par Jésus Christ.
1ère lecture : Ac 11, 21b-26 ; 13, 1-3
En ces jours-là, à Antioche, un grand nombre de gens devinrent croyants et se tournèrent vers le Seigneur. La nouvelle parvint aux oreilles de l’Église de Jérusalem, et l’on envoya Barnabé jusqu’à Antioche. À son arrivée, voyant la grâce de Dieu à l’œuvre, il fut dans la joie. Il les exhortait tous à rester d’un cœur ferme attachés au Seigneur. C’était en effet un homme de bien, rempli d’Esprit Saint et de foi. Une foule considérable s’attacha au Seigneur. Barnabé partit alors à Tarse chercher Saul. L’ayant trouvé, il l’amena à Antioche. Pendant toute une année, ils participèrent aux assemblées de l’Église, ils instruisirent une foule considérable. Et c’est à Antioche que, pour la première fois, les disciples reçurent le nom de « chrétiens ». Or il y avait dans l’Église qui était à Antioche des prophètes et des hommes chargés d’enseigner: Barnabé, Syméon appelé Le Noir, Lucius de Cyrène, Manahène, compagnon d’enfance d’Hérode le Tétrarque, et Saul. Un jour qu’ils célébraient le culte du Seigneur et qu’ils jeûnaient, l’Esprit Saint leur dit : « Mettez à part pour moi Barnabé et Saul en vue de l’œuvre à laquelle je les ai appelés. » Alors, après avoir jeûné et prié, et leur avoir imposé les mains, ils les laissèrent partir. – Parole du Seigneur.

Amen, je vous le dis : Avant que le ciel et la terre disparaissent, pas un seul iota, pas un seul trait ne disparaîtra de la Loi jusqu’à ce que tout se réalise. Donc, celui qui rejettera un seul de ces plus petits commandements, et qui enseignera aux hommes à faire ainsi, sera déclaré le plus petit dans le royaume des Cieux. Méditation
Le Christ en ce jour, interpelle encore les consciences sur le sens de la loi qui s’applique à l’existence humaine. Il lui redonne ses lettres de noblesse à travers son insistance sur sa validité, pour le temps de son accomplissement qui s’applique à tout le genre humain, lui-même y compris. Par-là, il voudrait présenter la loi comme une norme régulatrice de vie qui prend son achèvement en celui ou celle qui l’accompli, cependant, sans l’estimée plus importante que la vie humaine.

Saint Barnabas the Apostle

Saint Barnabas was born in Cyprus. He accompanied Paul on his first missionary journey and later went to Cyprus with his cousin John Mark (Mark the evangelist) to preach the gospel there. He was probably martyred at Salamis in Cyprus, some time before the year 61.
Entrance Antiphon : Cf. Acts 11: 24
Blessed is this holy man, who was worthy to be numbered among the Apostles, for he was a good man, filled with the Holy Spirit and with faith.

O God, who decreed that Saint Barnabas, a man filled with faith and the Holy Spirit, should be set apart to convert the nations, grant that the Gospel of Christ, which he strenuously preached, may be faithfully proclaimed by word and by deed. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

And a large number of people were won over to the Lord. Barnabas then left for Tarsus to look for Saul, and when he found him he brought him to Antioch. As things turned out they were to live together in that Church a whole year, instructing a large number of people. It was at Antioch that the disciples were first called ‘Christians.’ In the Church at Antioch the following were prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen, who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. One day while they were offering worship to the Lord and keeping a fast, the Holy Spirit said, ‘I want Barnabas and Saul set apart for the work to which I have called them.’ So it was that after fasting and prayer they laid their hands on them and sent them off.

Meditation
“He urged them all to remain faithful to the Lord with heartfelt devotion.” Saint Barnabas, whom we honour today, extends this plea to us — a reminder that devotion to Christ is an ongoing endeavour. Believing in Jesus is not enough. We have to remain faithful to Him all the days of our lives. This is a challenging task amid the demands of daily life, where worldly concerns can easily overshadow our commitments to God. When we start skipping daily prayer, reducing the time allotted to Scripture and neglecting church activities, we gradually distance ourselves from divine grace, which renders us more vulnerable to the temptations of the devil. As followers of Christ, we must seek God’s face daily through prayer and meditation on His Word. We have to strive every day to obey His commandments and teach them to others. Through the intercession of Saint Barnabas, may God grant us the grace to remain faithful to Him today and all the days of our lives.

1ère lecture : 2 Cor 1, 1-7
Paul, apôtre du Christ Jésus par la volonté de Dieu, et Timothée notre frère, à l’Église de Dieu qui est à Corinthe ainsi qu’à tous les fidèles qui sont par toute la Grèce. A vous, la grâce et la paix de la part de Dieu notre Père et du Seigneur Jésus Christ. Méditation Chaque attitude, chaque valeur que nous mettons en pratique dans notre suite du christ est assortie d’une promesse qui est en meme temps un méssage de réconfort pour chacun. par les béatitudes le Christ situe le fidele dans sa démarche de foi quant à la grace santifiante qu’Il pourrait recevoir du fait de sa vertuosité. cela est necessaire du fait que l’homme soit continuellement Incliné vers la curiosité de savoir à quoi bon tel ou tel bonne action. C’est pour lui un signe de reconfort bien qu’Il soit appelé à manifesté un amour agappè ou desinteressé. la question qu’on pourrait se posée est celle de savoir s’il est possible de prendre séparément les béatitudes ou encore d’adopter une béatitude au détriment des autres?

Meditation
“You are the salt of the earth; you are the light of the world.” In the First Reading, Paul reminds us that we have been anointed with the Holy Spirit. When the Spirit resides in us, we become both salt and light. Salt enhances the taste of food, while light brightens the path for others to see and follow. The absence of either one of them is immediately noticeable. To be salt and to be light is to make a positive difference, influencing the spaces we occupy. You make this difference by bringing Jesus into your surroundings. Bring Jesus into your family, workplace, social gatherings, and meeting places. Always ask yourself: “If Jesus were in my place, how would He act?” This can be achieved by using the Word of God as your guide in all your thoughts, actions, and words, irrespective of the setting or circumstance. Let your life be guided by the teachings of Jesus, so that you may become an example for others. As Saint Josemaria Escriva says, strive to think, speak, and act in a way that anyone observing you would recognise that you follow the life of Christ.

Gospel: John 19:25-34
Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary of Magdala. Seeing his mother and the disciple he loved standing near her, Jesus said to his mother, ‘Woman, this is your son.’ Then to the disciple he said, ‘This is your mother.’ And from that moment the disciple made a place for her in his home. After this, Jesus knew that everything had now been completed, and to fulfil the scripture perfectly he said, ‘I am thirsty.’ A jar full of vinegar stood there, so putting a sponge soaked in the vinegar on a hyssop stick they held it up to his mouth. After Jesus had taken the vinegar he said, ‘It is accomplished’; and bowing his head he gave up his spirit. It was Preparation Day, and to prevent the bodies remaining on the cross during the sabbath – since that sabbath was a day of special solemnity – the Jews asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies taken away. Receive our offerings, O Lord, and transform them into the mystery of salvation, so that by its power we may be set aflame with the charity of the Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church, and with her may be united more closely to the work of redemption. Through Christ our Lord.

Meditation
Today marks the return to Ordinary Time, a period where no major events in Jesus’ life are specifically emphasised. Ordinary Time serves as a reminder of the need to live out the Gospel in the ordinary activities of our daily lives. To help us in this endeavour, the Church gives us the Beatitudes as a lamp to light our paths. Let us reflect on the third beatitude: “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.” Our daily lives are often punctuated by sorrows: disappointments, betrayals, failures, sickness, and death. At times, the pain from these sorrows may be so overwhelming that we question the presence of God. Through this beatitude, Jesus reassures us that in these moments, He never abandons us. He often manifests His presence through those people who stand by us during our trials: those who visit, call, send messages, or provide a small financial contribution. These compassionate individuals become the hands God uses to touch and comfort us. In return, He expects us to be His hands as well, available to comfort others in their moments of suffering. Let us express gratitude to God for comforting us in our times of distress and helping us, in turn, to make ourselves available to comfort those who are also undergoing hardships.

La joyeuse vénération dédiée à la Mère de Dieu dans l’Église contemporaine, à la lumière de la réflexion sur le mystère du Christ et sur sa propre nature, ne pouvait pas oublier cette figure de femme (cf. Gal 4, 4), la Vierge Marie, qui est à la fois Mère du Christ et Mère de l’Église.

D’un seul cœur, les Apôtres participaient fidèlement à la prière Avec Marie, la mère de Jésus.
Prière d’ouverture
Dieu de miséricorde, notre Père, ton Fils unique, en mourant sur la Croix, a voulu que la Vierge Marie, sa mère, soit aussi notre mère. Accorde à ton Eglise, soutenue par son amour, la joie de donner naissance à des enfants toujours plus nombreux, de les voir grandir en sainteté et d’attirer à elle toutes les familles des peuples. Évangile : Jn 19,25-34
Or, près de la croix de Jésus se tenaient sa mère et la sœur de sa mère, Marie, femme de Cléophas, et Marie Madeleine. Jésus, voyant sa mère, et près d’elle le disciple qu’il aimait, dit à sa mère : « Femme, voici ton fils. » Puis il dit au disciple : « Voici ta mère. » Et à partir de cette heure-là, le disciple la prit chez lui. Après cela, sachant que tout, désormais, était achevé pour que l’Écriture s’accomplisse jusqu’au bout, Jésus dit : « J’ai soif. » Il y avait là un récipient plein d’une boisson vinaigrée. On fixa donc une éponge remplie de ce vinaigre à une branche d’hysope, et on l’approcha de sa bouche. Quand il eut pris le vinaigre, Jésus dit : « Tout est accompli. » Puis, inclinant la tête, il remit l’esprit. Comme c’était le jour de la Préparation (c’est-à-dire le vendredi), il ne fallait pas laisser les corps en croix durant le sabbat, d’autant plus que ce sabbat était le grand jour de la Pâque. Aussi les Juifs demandèrent à Pilate qu’on enlève les corps après leur avoir brisé les jambes. Les soldats allèrent donc briser les jambes du premier, puis de l’autre homme crucifié avec Jésus. Quand ils arrivèrent à Jésus, voyant qu’il était déjà mort, ils ne lui brisèrent pas les jambes, mais un des soldats avec sa lance lui perça le côté ; et aussitôt, il en sortit du sang et de l’eau.
Prière sur les offrandes
Accueille, Seigneur, nos offrandes pour en faire le mystère de notre salut : Que sa puissance brûle nos cœurs du même amour que la Vierge Marie, Mère de l’Église, afin que nous puissions plus intimement participer avec elle à l’œuvre de la rédemption. Par Jésus, le Christ, notre Seigneur.

Suspendu à la croix, Jésus dit au disciple qu’il aimait : « Voici ta mère».

Nous avons reçu le gage de la rédemption et de la vie, et nous te supplions encore, Seigneur : Qu’avec l’aide maternelle de la Vierge Marie, ton Église proclame à tous les peuples le message de l’Évangile et qu’elle remplisse le monde entier de l’effusion de ton Esprit. Méditation
La figure de Marie comme mère de l’église vient nous rappeler encore en ce jour le rôle primordial qu’occupe la Mère de Dieu dans le mystère du salut. Loin d’être une pure commodité le fait que le Christ sur la croix la confie au disciple bien-aimé, elle devient par cet acte celle à qui toute l’humanité a été confiée. D’où son rôle de d’avocate, d’auxiliatrice, de médiatrice. « Pour l’Église, la Mère de Dieu est le modèle dans l’ordre de la foi, de la charité et de la parfaite union au Christ. » (LG 63) aucune vie de foi authentiquement vécu ne saurait faire fi de la présence de la mère de Dieu.
