St Chad (d. 672)
MEMORIAL OF THE BVM
Chad was born in Northumbria, one of four brothers, all of whom became priests. He was educated under St Aidan and partly in Ireland. Chad was outstanding for his humility and simplicity of life. He died of the plague on 2 March 672.

Meditation
One would wonder if the children of today can be compared with the children of the time of Jesus in many aspects. In antiquity, children had no control, no claim and no status; they could welcome whatever came their way with open arms, not necessarily because they were innocent and trusting, but because they had nothing to lose and everything to gain. Likewise, a disciple is the one who comes and follows Jesus with no claim or status, the one who has renounced everything in order to gain ‘everything’ – Jesus the Saviour. Such are the primary citizens of God’s realm; they come to him like children, and they enjoy the warm embrace of the Master and his blessing forever.

Bienheureux Charles le Bon
Homme pénétré de l’amour de Dieu et fils du roi Knut IV (saint Canut du Danemark), il participa à la première croisade. A son retour, il devint comte des Flandres, de Picardie et d’Artois. Sa bonté lui fit des amis chez les pauvres et sa justice lui attira la haine des grands de ce monde qui l’assassinèrent pendant la messe dans l’Église Saint-Donatien de Bruges. Son culte fut confirmé en 1883.

Première lecture : Siracide 17, 1-15
Le Seigneur a créé l’homme en le tirant de la terre, et il l’a fait retourner à la terre. Il a donné aux humains des jours comptés, un temps déterminé, il a remis en leur pouvoir ce qui est sur la terre. Il les a revêtus d’une force pareille à la sienne, il les a faits à son image. Il a mis en tout vivant la crainte de l’être humain, pour que celui-ci commande en maître aux bêtes sauvages et aux oiseaux. Aux humains il a donné du jugement, une langue, des yeux, des oreilles, et un cœur pour réfléchir. Il les a remplis de savoir et d’intelligence, il leur a fait connaître le bien et le mal. Il a posé son regard sur leur cœur, leur montrant la grandeur de ses œuvres. Ils raconteront la grandeur de ses œuvres, ils célébreront le Nom très saint. Il leur a aussi accordé le savoir, il leur a donné en héritage la loi de vie ; afin qu’ils comprennent, dès maintenant, qu’ils sont mortels. Il a établi avec eux une Alliance éternelle, et il leur a fait connaître ses jugements. Leurs yeux ont vu la grandeur de sa gloire, leurs oreilles ont entendu la majesté de sa voix. Il leur a dit : « Gardez-vous de toute injustice », et à chacun il a donné des commandements au sujet du prochain. Leurs chemins sont toujours à découvert devant lui, ils n’échappent jamais à ses regards.

MÉDITATION
La première lecture fait une relecture de la création de l’Homme. Créé à l’image de Dieu, l’homme est doté du pouvoir et des facultés qui le placent au-dessus de toutes les autres créatures. L’Homme est donc supérieur aux autres créatures (Gn 1, 26). Doté de savoir et de liberté, l’homme doit reconnaître la grandeur de Dieu. Il doit se garder de toute injustice et aimer son prochain. En contemplant les œuvres de Dieu, il ne doit pas les commander en maître absolu, mais les gérer de façon responsable selon le dessein divin. Ainsi sommes-nous invités à prôner l’écologie humaine en prenant soin de la création. L’Évangile nous invite à devenir comme des petits enfants, c’est-à-dire humbles, reconnaître qu’on n’est rien devant Dieu et nous ouvrir à sa miséricorde afin que d’avoir part au Royaume des cieux. Que le Seigneur nous accorde d’être responsables vis-à-vis de la création.

St David (520 – 589)
The earliest account of the life of St David dates from five centuries after his death in 589. He became abbot and bishop at Mynyw. He is credited with a monastic rule and also with a Penitentiary.

Meditation
There are many individuals today who would go to Jesus to pose the same question, some genuinely because they don’t know the nature of marriage, others only to test him as the Pharisees did. In any case, Jesus gives a theological response: “What God has united, man must not divide,” This answer is a combination of two texts, Gen 1:27 and 2:24, and it shows that in creating humankind male and female, God intended a permanent union between husband and wife. Unfortunately, there are people who are still “unteachable” on this subject and who think that marriage is about political or economical alliances. Jesus asserts emphatically that marriage is a call, or better still a vocation, to realise and fulfil the perfect design of the Creator.

Saint Aubin d’Angers
Originaire de Vannes en Bretagne, il fut d’abord abbé de Nantilly, près de Saumur. Il devint évêque d’Angers dont il est le patron céleste. Il sut se dresser devant l’injustice pour adoucir le sort des prisonniers et des malheureux. Alors que beaucoup d’évêques se taisaient par crainte, il sut imposer le respect du mariage aux grands seigneurs qui, à l’époque mérovingienne, n’hésitaient pas à épouser leurs propres sœurs ou leurs propres filles.

De bonnes relations, tu peux en avoir avec beaucoup de monde ; mais des conseillers ? n’en choisis qu’un seul entre mille ! Si tu veux acquérir un ami, acquiers-le en le mettant à l’épreuve ; n’aie pas trop vite confiance en lui. Il y a celui qui est ton ami quand cela lui convient, mais qui ne reste pas avec toi au jour de ta détresse. Il y a celui qui d’ami se transforme en ennemi, et qui va divulguer, pour ta confusion, ce qui l’oppose à toi. Il y a celui qui est ton ami pour partager tes repas, mais qui ne reste pas avec toi au jour de ta détresse. Quand tout va bien pour toi, il est comme un autre toi-même et commande avec assurance à tes domestiques ; mais si tu deviens pauvre, il est contre toi, et il se cache pour t’éviter. Tes ennemis, tiens-les à distance ; avec tes amis, sois sur tes gardes. Un ami fidèle, c’est un refuge assuré, celui qui le trouve a trouvé un trésor. Un ami fidèle n’a pas de prix, sa valeur est inestimable. Un ami fidèle est un élixir de vie que découvriront ceux qui craignent le Seigneur. Mais, au commencement de la création, Dieu les fit homme et femme. À cause de cela, l’homme quittera son père et sa mère, il s’attachera à sa femme, et tous deux deviendront une seule chair. Ainsi, ils ne sont plus deux, mais une seule chair. Donc, ce que Dieu a uni, que l’homme ne le sépare!» De retour à la maison, les disciples l’interrogeaient de nouveau sur cette question. MÉDITATION
Dans l’Évangile, en réaction à la question que des Pharisiens pour le mettre à l’épreuve au sujet de la répudiation de la femme mariée, Jésus profite de l’occasion pour affirmer sans détour l’unité et l’indissolubilité du mariage : « Ce que Dieu a uni, que l’homme ne le sépare », et son caractère hétérogène, invitant l’homme à s’unir à une femme et non à un homme et vice versa. Cet enseignement de Jésus est encore actuel pour nos sociétés qui prônent la polygamie, le « mariage pour tous» ou l’infidélité. Il nous invite à vivre la fidélité dans nos engagements, chacun selon sa vocation et à œuvrer pour la réalisation du projet de Dieu pour l’humanité : donner la vie pour le bien-être de tous les hommes.

In 972 he became Archbishop of York. He had a special love of the poor; in Lent he would wash the feet of twelve poor men every day. He died at Worcester on 28 February 992.

Meditation
On scandals. The Lord speaks strongly against scandal. He says: “Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin [whoever “scandalises” them], it would be better for him if a great millstone were hung round his neck and he were thrown into the sea.” The “inconsistent Christian” does great harm to the Church. The life of a Christian is found on the way of consistency, and so we have to steer clear of the temptation to be inconsistent. Inconsistency can cause great scandal, and scandal kills! Today’s readings help us to pray for Christian consistency, in order that we may act, feel and think as Christians. We need to pray in order to live a consistent Christian life, for Christian consistency is a gift of God. It is a gift we should strive to ask for, saying: “Lord, may I be consistent! Lord, may I never cause scandal! May I be a person who thinks like a Christian, who feels like a Christian, who acts like a Christian!.” This is a prayer for all of us today; we need to be consistent!

Saint Romain
Doux et indulgent, Romain avait trente-cinq ans lorsqu’il quitta son Bugey natal, n’emportant avec lui que « la vie des Pères du Désert ». Il prit son chemin vers l’Est, traversa de grandes forêts et finit par atteindre la Bienne. Il venait de trouver ce qui lui convenait : de la terre labourable, une fontaine, des arbres et du silence. Il vécut là quelques années comme s’il était dans le désert égyptien de la Thébaïde.

Première Lecture : Si 5, 1-8
Ne t’appuie pas sur tes richesses, ne dis pas : « Elles me suffisent. » Ne te laisse pas entraîner par ton instinct et ta force à suivre les désirs de ton cœur. Ne dis pas: « Qui m’en imposera ? », car le Seigneur ne manquerait pas de te châtier. Ne dis pas : « J’ai péché, et rien ne m’est arrivé », car le Seigneur sait attendre longtemps. Ne sois pas assuré du pardon au point d’entasser péché sur péché. Ne dis pas : « Sa miséricorde est grande, il pardonnera bien tous mes péchés», car, en lui, il y a pitié mais aussi colère; son indignation s’abattra sur les pécheurs. Ne tarde pas à te retourner vers le Seigneur, ne remets pas ta décision de jour en jour ; car brusquement éclatera la colère du Seigneur, et à l’heure du châtiment, tu seras anéanti. - Heureux est l’homme qui n’entre pas au conseil des méchants, qui ne suit pas le chemin des pécheurs, ne siège pas avec ceux qui ricanent, mais se plaît dans la loi du Seigneur et murmure sa loi jour et nuit !
- Il est comme un arbre planté près d’un ruisseau, qui donne du fruit en son temps, et jamais son feuillage ne meurt ; tout ce qu’il entreprend réussira, tel n’est pas le sort des méchants.
- Mais ils sont comme la paille balayée par le vent : Le Seigneur connaît le chemin des justes, mais le chemin des méchants se perdra.

Méditation
L’Évangile d’aujourd’hui nous invite à ne pas hésiter à opérer des ruptures ou des sacrifices dans notre vie de foi. Il y a certains choix que nous faisons qui n’en valent pas la peine. C’est pourquoi après discernement, il ne faudrait pas se sentir condamné à aller dans un sens qui nous emmène à la destruction. Il s’agit d’un courage à demander à Dieu, car parfois, nous sommes emmenés à renoncer radicalement à certaines relations mêmes parentales ou intimes au profit de notre salut intégral.

Leander was born in the year 534 in Carthage. Leander became a Benedictine monk and in 579 was made Bishop of Seville. Leander is responsible for introducing the Nicene Creed at Mass. Leander died around the year 600 and was succeeded by his brother, Isidore.

Hatred or collaboration? John brings to Jesus the news that he had seen someone else driving out demons in Jesus’ name, yet he “does not travel with us.” Jesus replied, “Do not prevent him. There is no one who performs a mighty deed in my name who can at the same time speak ill of me. For whoever is not against us is for us.” John’s response is as one we make many times. It happens when we are involved in some “good work” with a group perhaps, and we hear about another community group with similar and just as effective outcomes, which is not attached to ours. Do we collaborate graciously or compete aggressively with them? Or a person we have labeled as belonging to a different church group, might say or do something vastly different than our expectations – wiser, more compassionate, or more akin to our belief. Do we praise him or bring out our stereotypes?

L’acceptation du Christ peut s’exprimer de multiples façons. Il y a des voies officielles et ordinaires de profession de foi, mais il y en a également qui sont jugées uniquement en fonction de la Miséricorde de Dieu. Ce sont ces dernières qui permettent aux chrétiens d’éviter toute forme de fondamentalisme et radicalisme exacerbé. Dans la vie chrétienne, notre devoir est d’exprimer la vie du Christ et la proposer aux autres en évitant toutes sortes d’attitude qui risqueraient de nous éloigner de l’essentiel.

Meditation
There can be no share in God’s glory without the cross. When Jesus prophesied his own betrayal and crucifixion, it did not make any sense to his disciples because it did not fit their understanding of what the Messiah came to do. How ashamed the disciples must have been when Jesus overheard them arguing about who among them was the greatest! But aren’t we like the disciples? We compare ourselves with others and desire their praise. The appetite for glory and greatness seems to be inbred in us. However, Jesus made a gesture by embracing a child to show his disciples who really is the greatest in the kingdom of God. What is the significance of Jesus’ gesture? Jesus elevated a little child in the presence of his disciples by placing the child in a privileged position of honour. Who is the greatest in God’s kingdom? The one who is humble and lowly of heart, who instead of asserting their rights willingly empty themselves of pride and self-seeking glory by taking the lowly position of a servant or child. Jesus himself is our model. He came not to be served, but to serve. Paul the Apostle states that Jesus emptied himself and took the form of a servant.

Il était évêque de Magydos, dans le sud de l’actuelle Turquie, quand éclata la persécution de Dèce. Nombreux furent alors les chrétiens qui apostasièrent pour sauver leur vie. Craignant que ses fidèles n’en fassent autant, il leur conseilla des fuir et lui-même se laissa arrêter. Conduit devant le gouverneur, il fut condamné à mourir, comme son maître, par crucifixion.

Évangile : Marc 9, 30-37
En ce temps-là, Jésus traversait la Galilée avec ses disciples, et il ne voulait pas qu’on le sache, car il enseignait ses disciples en leur disant : « Le Fils de l’homme est livré aux mains des hommes ; ils le tueront et, trois jours après sa mort, il ressuscitera. » Mais les disciples ne comprenaient pas ces paroles et ils avaient peur de l’interroger. Ils arrivèrent à Capharnaüm, et, une fois à la maison, Jésus leur demanda : « De quoi discutiez-vous en chemin ? » Ils se taisaient, car, en chemin, ils avaient discuté entre eux pour savoir qui était le plus grand. S’étant assis, Jésus appela les Douze et leur dit : « Si quelqu’un veut être le premier, qu’il soit le dernier de tous et le serviteur de tous. » Prenant alors un enfant, il le plaça au milieu d’eux, l’embrassa, et leur dit : « Quiconque accueille en mon nom un enfant comme celui-ci, c’est moi qu’il accueille. Et celui qui m’accueille, ce n’est pas moi qu’il accueille, mais Celui qui m’a envoyé. »

Méditation
« Si quelqu’un veut être le premier, qu’il soit le dernier de tous et le serviteur de tous ». Voici un conseil évangélique qui devrait orienter la vie de tout fidèle du Christ. Être dernier c’est vouloir être premier. L’Évangile ne cesse de nous surprendre avec ses paradigmes déconcertants, pourtant vrais. La vie d’un chrétien devrait s’inspirer de ce modèle afin de créer un monde plus humain et généreux au sens le plus sincère du terme.
