He was born in Pisa. He married and had five sons and at least one daughter. After a time, they decided to follow the Benedictine Rule of Monte Casino. St. Walfrid’s cultus was confirmed in 1861.

The serpent was the most subtle of all the wild beasts that the Lord God had made. Returning from the district of Tyre, Jesus went by way of Sidon towards the Sea of Galilee, right through the Decapolis region. He took him aside in private, away from the crowd, put his fingers into the man’s ears and touched his tongue with spittle. Then looking up to heaven he sighed; and he said to him, ‘Ephphatha’, that is, ‘Be opened.’ And his ears were opened, and the ligament of his tongue was loosened and he spoke clearly. And Jesus ordered them to tell no one about it, but the more he insisted, the more widely they published it. Their admiration was unbounded. ‘He has done all things well,’ they said ‘he makes the deaf hear and the dumb speak.’

Meditation
Guilt, fear, then remorse. The readings of today confront us with the question of guilt, that feeling of responsibility or remorse for an offence we have committed. We are familiar with the feeling of shame that comes when we offend someone that we love. We also know the feeling of guilt that accompanies sin, an offence against God almighty. Adam and Eve also experienced guilt. Immediately after they had sinned by disobeying God, Adam and Eve felt the same guilt that we feel when we sin. And they felt something else, fear. We fear retribution or punishment from the one offended. How can I go from the negative feeling of guilt to the positive feeling of joy and hope? Christ exhorts us not only to have remorse and sorrow for our sins, but also to come to him for forgiveness. Fear can hinder us from seeking the forgiveness of God. It is important to seek forgiveness as soon as we experience guilt and sorrow for our sin. Another hindrance to seeking forgiveness is a feeling that my sin is just too terrible, that God can’t forgive me. What is your attitude towards the Sacrament of Reconciliation?

Jésuite, ce confesseur de sainte Marguerite-Marie Alacoque à Paray-le-Monial est convaincu de l’authenticité des apparitions et des confidences dont elle est l’objet, et il en rédige le récit. Après un séjour en Grande-Bretagne au cours duquel, jeté en prison lors de la vague de persécutions anticatholiques de 1678, il perd la santé, il revient à Paray-le-Monial d’où il est rappelé à Dieu.

Première lecture : Genèse 3, 1-8
Le serpent était le plus rusé de tous les animaux des champs que le Seigneur Dieu avait faits. Il dit à la femme : « Alors, Dieu vous a vraiment dit : “Vous ne mangerez d’aucun arbre du jardin” » La femme répondit au serpent : «Nous mangeons les fruits des arbres du jardin. Mais, pour le fruit de l’arbre qui est au milieu du jardin, Dieu a dit : “Vous n’en mangerez pas, vous n’y toucherez pas, sinon vous mourrez.” » Le serpent dit à la femme : « Pas du tout! Elle prit de son fruit, et en mangea. Elle en donna aussi à son mari, et il en mangea. Alors leurs yeux à tous deux s’ouvrirent et ils se rendirent compte qu’ils étaient nus. Ils attachèrent les unes aux autres des feuilles de figuier, et ils s’en firent des pagnes. Ils entendirent la voix du Seigneur Dieu qui se promenait dans le jardin à la brise du jour. L’homme et sa femme allèrent se cacher aux regards du Seigneur Dieu parmi les arbres du jardin.

En ce temps-là, Jésus quitta le territoire de Tyr ; passant par Sidon, il prit la direction de la mer de Galilée et alla en plein territoire de la Décapole. Des gens lui amènent un sourd qui avait aussi de la difficulté à parler, et supplient Jésus de poser la main sur lui. Jésus l’emmena à l’écart, loin de la foule, lui mit les doigts dans les oreilles, et, avec sa salive, lui toucha la langue. Puis, les yeux levés au ciel, il soupira et lui dit: « Effata ! », c’est-à-dire : « Ouvre-toi!» Ses oreilles s’ouvrirent ; sa langue se délia, et il parlait correctement. Alors Jésus leur ordonna de n’en rien dire à personne ; mais plus il leur donnait cet ordre, plus ceux-ci le proclamaient. Méditation
Dans la mission que Jésus reçoit de son Père, il n’hésite pas à restaurer l’homme dans toute sa dignité. En faisant entendre les sourds et parler les muets, le Christ veut nous apprendre à laisser nos sens être purifiés par Lui. Lui seul en effet, peut nous faire entendre le vrai sens de choses et utiliser nos voix pour dire Dieu à l’univers entier. Car, s’il fait entendre les sourds et parler les muets c’est pour que ceux-ci entendent Dieu et le disent à travers leurs voix.

Now the woman was a pagan, by birth a Syrophoenician, and she begged him to cast the devil out of her daughter. And he said to her, ‘The children should be fed first, because it is not fair to take the children’s food and throw it to the house-dogs.’ But she spoke up: ‘Ah yes, sir,’ she replied ‘but the house-dogs under the table can eat the children’s scraps.’ And he said to her, ‘For saying this, you may go home happy: the devil has gone out of your daughter.’ So she went off to her home and found the child lying on the bed and the devil gone.

Meditation
Three important messages stand out in our Gospel of today. First, making demands on behalf of the weak and afflicted requires risk-taking. Then, figures of authority must be open to requests from the weak and despised. Finally, doing good demands persistence. Jesus’ initial response to the woman reminds me of how easy it is for figures of authority to reject requests from people because of their race, education, age, sex, social status, etc. However, unlike most powerful people, Jesus changes course and grants the woman’s request. He doesn’t just walk away or tell his disciples to get rid of her. This should remind decision-makers to LISTEN to petitioners with respect rather than ignore them for an arbitrary reason. Finally, this reading teaches that we must persist when we fight for justice. We shouldn’t fold the first time someone says no. Jesus’ ultimate response to the woman gives us hope that we will win.

Saints Cyrille, moine, et Méthode, évêque
Toute l’activité missionnaire des deux apôtres de la Russie méridionale et de la Moravie fut marquée par un souci d’adaptation aux conditions de langue et de culture du pays qu’ils voulaient évangéliser. Natifs de Thessalonique, Méthode, un ancien fonctionnaire impérial, et son jeune frère Constantin, le futur Cyrille, s’étaient faits moines avant d’être envoyés par Byzance auprès des peuples slaves. Ils traduisirent en slavon la Bible et les livres liturgiques, et inventèrent à cet effet l’alphabet dit ‘’cyrillique’’, encore en usage aujourd’hui. Ils se heurtèrent à l’opposition de missionnaires de rite latin qui les dénoncèrent au pape à cause de leur emploi de la langue vivante. Les deux frères vinrent à Rome, où ils obtinrent l’approbation de Nicolas 1er (868). Constantin mourut en 869, Méthode mourut en 885.

Le Seigneur Dieu prit une de ses côtes, puis il referma la chair à sa place. Avec la côte qu’il avait prise à l’homme, il façonna une femme et il l’amena vers l’homme. L’homme dit alors: «Cette fois-ci, voilà l’os de mes os et la chair de ma chair! On l’appellera femme – Ishsha –, elle qui fut tirée de l’homme – Ish. » À cause de cela, l’homme quittera son père et sa mère, il s’attachera à sa femme, et tous deux ne feront plus qu’un. Tous les deux, l’homme et sa femme, étaient nus, et ils n’en éprouvaient aucune honte l’un devant l’autre.

Il était entré dans une maison, et il ne voulait pas qu’on le sache, mais il ne put rester inaperçu : une femme entendit aussitôt parler de lui ; elle avait une petite fille possédée par un esprit impur ; elle vint se jeter à ses pieds. Cette femme était païenne, syro-phénicienne de naissance, et elle lui demandait d’expulser le démon hors de sa fille. Il lui disait : « Laisse d’abord les enfants se rassasier, car il n’est pas bien de prendre le pain des enfants et de le jeter aux petits chiens. » Mais elle lui répliqua : « Seigneur, les petits chiens, sous la table, mangent bien les miettes des petits enfants!» Alors il lui dit : « À cause de cette parole, va : le démon est sorti de ta fille. » Elle rentra à la maison, et elle trouva l’enfant étendue sur le lit : le démon était sorti d’elle.

Méditation
Il y a des paroles que nous prononçons qui ont une force exorciste. Cela nous est enseigné dans l’Évangile d’aujourd’hui. S’adressant à cette femme syro-phénicienne, donc païenne, Jésus dit : « À cause de cette parole, va: le démon est sorti de ta fille». Dans nos entretiens avec les hommes, nous sommes appelés à faire un bon usage de la parole sachant qu’elle peut chasser les nombreux démons de nos vies. Ouvrons donc toutes nos paroles humaines à leur origine divine afin qu’elles acquièrent une plus grande efficacité.

Première lecture : Genèse 2, 4b-9. 15-17
Lorsque le Seigneur Dieu fit la terre et le ciel, aucun buisson n’était encore sur la terre, aucune herbe n’avait poussé, parce que le Seigneur Dieu n’avait pas encore fait pleuvoir sur la terre, et il n’y avait pas d’homme pour travailler le sol. Mais une source montait de la terre et irriguait toute la surface du sol. Alors le Seigneur Dieu modela l’homme avec la poussière tirée du sol ; il insuffla dans ses narines le souffle de vie, et l’homme devint un être vivant. Le Seigneur Dieu planta un jardin en Éden, à l’orient, et y plaça l’homme qu’il avait modelé. Le Seigneur Dieu fit pousser du sol toutes sortes d’arbres à l’aspect désirable et aux fruits savoureux; il y avait aussi l’arbre de vie au milieu du jardin, et l’arbre de la connaissance du bien et du mal. Le Seigneur Dieu prit l’homme et le conduisit dans le jardin d’Éden pour qu’il le travail et le garde. En ce temps-là, appelant de nouveau la foule, Jésus lui disait: «Écoutez-moi tous, et comprenez bien. Rien de ce qui est extérieur à l’homme et qui entre en lui ne peut le rendre impur. Mais ce qui sort de l’homme, voilà ce qui rend l’homme impur. » Quand il eut quitté la foule pour rentrer à la maison, ses disciples l’interrogeaient sur cette parabole. Alors il leur dit : « Êtes-vous donc sans intelligence, vous aussi ? Ne comprenez-vous pas que tout ce qui entre dans l’homme, en venant du dehors, ne peut pas le rendre impur, parce que cela n’entre pas dans son cœur, mais dans son ventre, pour être éliminé ? » C’est ainsi que Jésus déclarait purs tous les aliments. Il leur dit encore : « Ce qui sort de l’homme, c’est cela qui le rend impur. Car c’est du dedans, du cœur de l’homme, que sortent les pensées perverses : inconduites, vols, meurtres, adultères, cupidités, méchancetés, fraude, débauche, envie, diffamation, orgueil et démesure. Tout ce mal vient du dedans, et rend l’homme impur. »

L’Évangile d’aujourd’hui nous rappelle que nous avons en nous cette grande capacité de transformation. Nous pouvons, avec le secours divin, faire en sorte que tout ce que nous voyons ou touchons acquiert un sens renouvelé en fonction du bien qui est dans notre cœur. En d’autres termes, nos cœurs devraient constituer des laboratoires de bonté et de générosité. C’est une grâce à demander à Dieu dans le quotidien de la vie afin que la Paix de Dieu habite toujours nos cœurs.

Recognizing Jesus Christ.There is this saying: don’t judge a book by its cover. In other words, just as we can’t say what are the contents in the book just by looking at its cover, neither can we say what a person is really like just by his looks. Nonetheless, we can’t deny that looks do reveal. They reveal something about the feelings of the person and something about his/her heart. For example, the angry look, the hurting look, the loving look, the tender look, etc. are significant. In the Gospel, we heard that the people recognized Jesus. This recognition goes beyond the physical features. They saw deeper than just the physical dimension. They saw in him the look of mercy and unconditional love. They saw in him the face of love, the face of God. In the Eucharist, Jesus shows us the face of his love. He gives to us who he is and what he is. When we partake of the Eucharist we change, just as bread and wine are changed. We too take on the look of love; we take on the face of love. May others recognize that look and see that face in us.

Il fut sacré archevêque de Bourges par saint Germain de Paris vers 568. Pendant sept ans environ il gouverna très saintement son Eglise. Avec les autres métropolitains du royaume de Bourgogne, il prit part au quatrième concile de Paris et signa les lettres synodales destinées à Aegidius, archevêque de Reims, et au roi Sigebert. Grégoire de Tours fait son éloge lorsqu’il raconte qu’après sa mort, sur la dalle qui recouvrait son tombeau, un aveugle recouvra la vue. Par ce signe, le peuple reconnut qu’aveugler jusqu’ici par les séductions du monde, il n’avait pas mérité de reconnaître combien Félix depuis son vivant avait été l’ami de Dieu.

En ce temps-là, les pharisiens et quelques scribes, venus de Jérusalem, se réunissent auprès de Jésus, et voient quelques-uns de ses disciples prendre leur repas avec des mains impures, c’est-à-dire non lavées. – Les pharisiens en effet, comme tous les Juifs, se lavent toujours soigneusement les mains avant de manger, par attachement à la tradition des anciens ; et au retour du marché, ils ne mangent pas avant de s’être aspergés d’eau, et ils sont attachés encore par tradition a beaucoup d’autres pratiques : lavage de coupes, de carafes et de plats. Alors les pharisiens et les scribes demandèrent à Jésus : « Pourquoi tes disciples ne suivent-ils pas la tradition des anciens? Ils prennent leurs repas avec des mains impures. » Jésus leur répondit : « Isaïe a bien prophétisé à votre sujet, hypocrites, ainsi qu’il est écrit : Ce peuple m’honore des lèvres, mais son cœur est loin de moi. On en vient par conséquent à contredire parfois ce que nous dit vraiment la Bonne Nouvelle. D’autres personnes vont jusqu’à l’utiliser comme moyen pour atteindre des fins de tout genre. De cette manière, certaines traditions tendent à affadir ou occulter le message évangélique en lui-même.

There are also many other observances which have been handed down to them concerning the washing of cups and pots and bronze dishes. So these Pharisees and scribes asked him, ‘Why do your disciples not respect the tradition of the elders but eat their food with unclean hands?’ He answered, ‘It was of you hypocrites that Isaiah so rightly prophesied in this passage of scripture: This people honours me only with lip-service, while their hearts are far from me. Meditation
In bringing something out of nothing, the narrative highlights God’s creative action rather as bringing order out of an existing chaos. It highlights an orderliness that God saw as “very good”. This creative activity of God continues daily in our own personal lives, as well as in the life of the Church: leading the chaos of darkness/obscurity towards the order of light, leading the chaos of self-seeking towards the order of being for others. God is certainly Creator because of what he did in the primeval creation process, but also because of what he continues to do or desires to do daily in our lives. The key difference is that the cosmic chaos did not resist God’s creative action, whereas our personal chaos can and does resist it.

Journée Mondiale des Malades
Notre Dame deLe message de Lourdes, qui est appel à la conversion et à la prière, fait écho à celui de Jésus dans l’Évangile. A la fin de ses apparitions à Bernadette (1858), Marie se nomme ‘’l’Immaculée Conception’’, pour souligner que tout, en elle, est un don de l’Amour qui l’a gratuitement choisie. Par la voix de l’humble bergère, elle nous invite à prier avec une confiance inlassable, afin de nous ouvrir comme elle à l’Amour qui veut nous sauver. Les guérisons que le Seigneur accorde aux pèlerins, à la prière de sa mère, sont le signe de cette volonté de salut. Il s’agit moins d’admirer ces miracles que d’être des témoins fidèles de l’amour qui s’y révèle.

Il y eut un soir, il y eut un matin: troisième jour. Et Dieu dit : « Qu’il y ait des luminaires au firmament du ciel, pour séparer le jour de la nuit ; qu’ils servent de signes pour marquer les fêtes, les jours et les années; et qu’ils soient, au firmament du ciel, des luminaires pour éclairer la terre. » Et ce fut ainsi. Dieu fit les deux grands luminaires: le plus grand pour commander au jour, le plus petit pour commander à la nuit ; il fit aussi les étoiles. Dieu les plaça au firmament du ciel pour éclairer la terre, pour commander au jour et à la nuit, pour séparer la lumière des ténèbres. Et Dieu vit que cela était bon. Il y eut un soir, il y eut un matin : quatrième jour.

- Bénis le Seigneur, ô mon âme; Seigneur mon Dieu, tu es si grand! Revêtu de magnificence, tu as pour manteau la lumière!
- Tu as donné son assise à la terre: qu’elle reste inébranlable au cours des temps. Tu l’as vêtue de l’abîme des mers: les eaux couvraient même les montagnes.
- Dans les ravins tu fais jaillir des sources et l’eau chemine aux creux des montagnes ; les oiseaux séjournent près d’elle : dans le feuillage on entend leurs cris.
- Quelle profusion dans tes œuvres, Seigneur ! Tout cela, ta sagesse l’a fait; la terre s’emplit de tes biens. Bénis le Seigneur, ô mon âme !

En ce temps-là après la traversée, abordant à Génésareth Jésus et ses disciples accostèrent. Ils sortirent de la barque, et aussitôt les gens reconnurent Jésus : ils parcoururent toute la région, et se mirent à apporter les malades sur des brancards là où l’on apprenait que Jésus se trouvait. Et dans tous les endroits où il se rendait, dans les villages, les villes ou les campagnes, on déposait les infirmes sur les places. Ils le suppliaient de leur laisser toucher ne serait-ce que la frange de son manteau. Et tous ceux qui la touchèrent étaient sauvés.
Prière sur les offrandes
Seigneur notre Dieu, tu as voulu choisir dans ta création le pain et le vin qui refont chaque jour nos forces : Fais qu’ils deviennent aussi pour nous le sacrement de la vie éternelle. Par Jésus.
Antienne de communion: Ps 106, 8-9
Proclamons l’amour du Seigneur, ses merveilles pour les hommes : Il a rassasié ceux qui avaient faim, et désaltéré ceux qui avaient soif.
Prière après la communion
Tu as voulu, Seigneur, que nous partagions un même pain et que nous buvions à la même coupe : Accorde-nous de vivre tellement unis dans le Christ que nous portions du fruit pour le salut du monde. Par Jésus.
Méditation
Apprendre à reconnaître Jésus est un exercice spirituel fondamental à effectuer par tous les fidèles du Christ. L’Évangile nous dit qu’après avoir accosté et être sortis de la barque avec ses disciples, les gens reconnurent Jésus. Voilà pourquoi ils se mirent à porter les malades sur les brancards et à déposer les infirmes sur les places attendant de Jésus leur guérison. Ce faisant, il convient de s’exercer avec ardeur à reconnaître les signes de la présence de Dieu dans ce monde afin d’éviter de le rechercher là il n’est pas.
