First reading: Genesis 8:6-13, 20-22
At the end of forty days Noah opened the porthole he had made in the ark and he sent out the raven. This went off, and flew back and forth until the waters dried up from the earth. Then he sent out the dove, to see whether the waters were receding from the surface of the earth. The dove, finding nowhere to perch, returned to him in the ark, for there was water over the whole surface of the earth; putting out his hand he took hold of it and brought it back into the ark with him. After waiting seven more days, again he sent out the dove from the ark. In the evening, the dove came back to him and there it was with a new olive-branch in its beak. So Noah realised that the waters were receding from the earth. After waiting seven more days he sent out the dove, and now it returned to him no more. It was in the six hundred and first year of Noah’s life, in the first month and on the first of the month, that the water dried up from the earth. Noah lifted back the hatch of the ark and looked out. The surface of the ground was dry! Noah built an altar for the Lord, and choosing from all the clean animals and all the clean birds he offered burnt offerings on the altar. The Lord smelt the appeasing fragrance and said to himself, ‘Never again will I curse the earth because of man, because his heart contrives evil from his infancy. Never again will I strike down every living thing as I have done. ‘As long as earth lasts, sowing and reaping, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night shall cease no more.’

Meditation
Jesus is a healer.Every Gospel presents stories of Jesus’ healings. Even Jesus’ enemies had to acknowledge he healed, though they attributed the source of his power not to God but to Beelzebub. This healing dimension of Jesus’ ministry has great relevance to us today. It is a key to fully grasping what it means for Jesus Christ to be Saviour. Too often we limit Jesus’ saving work to his death on the cross for the atonement of sin. We don’t fully acknowledge that Jesus saves us every day by giving us the strength to be faithful disciples in situations in which we are tempted not to live the Gospel. When we go to Jesus in prayer, open our hearts and receive new energy, Jesus is saving us! Jesus is our personal Saviour. Jesus touched the blind man in today’s Gospel and the blind man saw. Jesus touches us. Though he may not remove our physical infirmities and problems, he heals us from weakness by giving us strength to live the Gospel in them.

Noé lâcha aussi la colombe pour voir si les eaux avaient baissé à la surface du sol. C’est en l’an six cent un de la vie de Noé, au premier mois, le premier jour du mois, que les eaux s’étaient retirées, laissant la terre à sec. Noé enleva le toit de l’arche, et regarda : et voici que la surface du sol était sèche. Noé bâtit un autel au Seigneur ; il prit, parmi tous les animaux purs et tous les oiseaux purs, des victimes qu’il offrit en holocauste sur l’autel. Le Seigneur respira l’agréable odeur, et il se dit en lui-même : « Jamais plus je ne maudirai le sol à cause de l’homme: le cœur de l’homme est enclin au mal dès sa jeunesse, mais jamais plus je ne frapperai tous les vivants comme je l’ai fait. Il lui mit de la salive sur les yeux et lui imposa les mains. Il lui demandait : « Aperçois-tu quelque chose ? » Levant les yeux, l’homme disait : « J’aperçois les gens: ils ressemblent à des arbres que je vois marcher. » Puis Jésus, de nouveau, imposa les mains sur les yeux de l’homme ; celui-ci se mit à voir normalement, il se trouva guéri, et il distinguait tout avec netteté. Méditation
En répétant un geste liturgique ou sacramentel sur une personne, l’obtention d’une meilleure guérison est possible. Le Christ le montre à suffisance à travers cette page d’Évangile. En effet, par deux fois, il impose les mains à l’aveugle de Bethsaïde. C’est une situation assez rare. Jésus le fait pourtant en cette circonstance. Ce qui signifie dans le même sens la répétition de prières appropriées dans certaines conditions de vie.

Saint Gabin de Rome
Selon une version, frère du Pape saint Caïus et père de sainte Suzanne, il fut longtemps détenu en prison et y mourut pour la foi sous l’empereur Dioclétien. Une autre version fait de lui un prêtre romain qui ne connut pas le martyre, mais qui eut un renom de sainteté parce qu’il fut enterré dans la basilique de sainte Suzanne à Rome, honneur qui lui valut en même temps d’entrer dans le martyrologe.

Méditation
La compréhension des œuvres accomplies par Dieu dans la vie humaine demande une autre clef de lecture. Celle-ci ne peut se faire qu’en implorant la Grâce de Dieu. Autant de miracles accomplies par Jésus et en présence de ses disciples ne suffiront pas à leur faire comprendre la grandeur sans limite de leur Maître; la preuve, ils se mettent à discuter sur un manque de pains en présence de celui-là même qui peut les multiplier à l’infini. La Grâce nous fait ainsi entrer dans l’intelligence des actions divines.

Meditation
My security is in God. Most of us may not have gone for a boat ride, talk less of being in a boat when there is a storm. When the boat is being tossed about in the sea during the storm, the only thing to hang on to is the boat, which we hope will not capside. It may not be a sure source of security, but that is the only one available in the midst of the storm at sea. Today’s readings mention boats. The First Reading talks about an ark big enough to hold the various species of animals. The Gospel talks about a boat with a dozen or more men on it crossing the lake. But whether it is the big ark or that small boat, how do we perceive it? The ark is the refuge of life and the means of salvation. Outside the ark is the flood which destroys everything. In the boat and present in the midst of the disciples is the Lord of life and Saviour of all. But the disciples don’t seem to perceive it. As for us, how do we perceive God as we come for this Mass, or as we peruse these readings at home? May we hear the Word of Life and experience the saving love of God in the Eucharist.

Sainte Bernadette Soubirous, vierge (en France)
Pauvre et torturée par l’asthme, Bernadette (1844-1879) a quatorze ans quand, dans la grotte de Massabielle, à Lourdes, lui apparaît dix-huit fois celle qui se nommera : ‘’l’Immaculée Conception’’. ‘’ Si la sainte Vierge en avait trouvé une plus ignorante que moi, c’est elle qu’elle aurait choisie’’, dira Bernadette, devenue Sœur Marie Bernard en 1866 chez les Sœurs de la Charité de Nevers. Ce mot dit bien l’humilité de celle qui accepta inlassablement souffrances et humiliations pour le salut des pécheurs.

L’homme s’unit à Ève, sa femme: elle devint enceinte, et elle mit au monde Caïn. Elle dit alors : « J’ai acquis un homme avec l’aide du Seigneur ! » Dans la suite, elle mit au monde Abel, frère de Caïn. Abel devint berger, et Caïn cultivait la terre. Au temps fixé, Caïn présenta des produits de la terre en offrande au Seigneur. De son côté, Abel présenta les premiers-nés de son troupeau, en offrant les morceaux les meilleurs. Le Seigneur tourna son regard vers Abel et son offrande, mais vers Caïn et son offrande, il ne le tourna pas. Caïn en fut très irrité et montra un visage abattu. Le Seigneur dit à Caïn : « Pourquoi es-tu irrité, pourquoi ce visage abattu? Si tu agis bien, ne relèveras-tu pas ton visage ? Mais si tu n’agis pas bien…, le péché est accroupi à ta porte. Il est à l’affût, mais tu dois le dominer.» Caïn dit à son frère Abel: «Sortons dans les champs. » Et, quand ils furent dans la campagne, Caïn se jeta sur son frère Abel et le tua. Le Seigneur dit à Caïn : « Où est ton frère Abel ? » Caïn répondit : « Je ne sais pas. Est-ce que je suis, moi, le gardien de mon frère ? » Le Seigneur reprit : « Qu’as-tu fait ? La voix du sang de ton frère crie de la terre vers moi maintenant donc, sois maudit et chassé loin de cette terre qui a ouvert la bouche pour boire le sang de ton frère, versé par ta main. Tu auras beau cultiver la terre, elle ne produira plus rien pour toi. Tu seras un errant, un vagabond sur la terre. » Alors Caïn dit au Seigneur : « Mon châtiment est trop lourd à porter ! Voici qu’aujourd’hui tu m’as chassé de cette terre. Je dois me cacher loin de toi, je serai un errant, un vagabond sur la terre, et le premier venu qui me trouvera me tuera. » Le Seigneur lui répondit : « Si quelqu’un tue Caïn, Caïn sera vengé sept fois. » Et le Seigneur mit un signe sur Caïn pour le préserver d’être tué par le premier venu qui le trouverait. Adam s’unit encore à sa femme, et elle mit au monde un fils. Elle lui donna le nom de Seth (ce qui veut dire : accordé), car elle dit : « Dieu m’a accordé une nouvelle descendance à la place d’Abel, tué par Caïn. »

Méditation
Faut-il encore chercher des signes lorsque tout porte à nous rassurer sur la vérité d’un fait? Peut-être que la réponse se trouve dans l’obstination à refuser le chemin de la conversion. L’Évangile nous invite à l’ouverture d’esprit et de cœur en face de la Parole de Dieu et devant les multiples signes de la présence de Dieu. Il est donc important pour chaque fidèle du Christ d’œuvre en faveur de la recherche sincère et sans cesse renouvelée de la volonté de Dieu.

St. Simon
In St. Matthew’s Gospel, we read of St. Simon who is described as one of our Lord’s brethren or kinsmen. He is one of those brethren of Christ who are mentioned in the Acts of the Apostles as having received the Holy Spirit on Pentecost.

Meditation
How many times have you grown envious and resentful of your mate, neighbour or colleague because you feel he is doing better? In the First Reading today, Cain killed Abel because Abel had a clean heart and hands. In the Gospel, the Jews came to question Jesus for signs of authority as the Messiah, for he was displacing them. Naturally, Cain was angry and downcast. God even talked to him, telling him to be well disposed for the sin of resentment and bitterness was waiting to devour him like a crouching beast. But Cain did not listen to God, and letting his anger develop into resentment and bitterness, he committed the first murder which is recorded in the Bible. God is always speaking to us, but are we listening to Him? If only we were aware of the emotions within us, the signs that are in us, then we would know how God speaks to us.

- Heureux est l’homme qui n’entre pas au conseil des méchants, qui ne suit pas le chemin des pécheurs, ne siège pas avec ceux qui ricanent, mais se plaît dans la loi du Seigneur et murmure sa loi jour et nuit !
- Il est comme un arbre planté près d’un ruisseau, qui donne du fruit en son temps, et jamais son feuillage ne meurt ; tout ce qu’il entreprend réussira. Tel n’est pas le sort des méchants.
- Mais ils sont comme la paille balayée par le vent. Le Seigneur connaît le chemin des justes, mais le chemin des méchants se perdra.
Deuxième lecture : 1 Corinthiens
Frères, nous proclamons que le Christ est ressuscité d’entre les morts; alors, comment certains d’entre vous peuvent-ils affirmer qu’il n’y a pas de résurrection des morts ? Car si les morts ne ressuscitent pas, le Christ non plus n’est pas ressuscité. Et si le Christ n’est pas ressuscité, votre foi est sans valeur, vous êtes encore sous l’emprise de vos péchés ; et donc, ceux qui se sont endormis dans le Christ sont perdus. Si nous avons mis notre espoir dans le Christ pour cette vie seulement, nous sommes les plus à plaindre de tous les hommes. Mais non ! le Christ est ressuscité d’entre les morts, lui, premier ressuscité parmi ceux qui se sont endormis.

Méditation
Aucune situation dans la vie ne devrait affaiblir radicalement l’élan d’amour du chrétien en faveur de Dieu et de ses semblables. Les béatitudes sont une réponse aux multiples interrogations que se posent les fidèles du Christ devant l’échec, l’abandon, le rejet, la pauvreté, la persécution, etc. En tout cela, la Bonne Nouvelle nous rassure toujours. Dieu est là, présent. Il nous guide et donne sens à notre existence.

Second reading: 1 Corinthians 15:12, 16-20
If Christ raised from the dead is what has been preached, how can some of you be saying that there is no resurrection of the dead? For if the dead are not raised, Christ has not been raised, and if Christ has not been raised, you are still in your sins. And what is more serious, all who have died in Christ have perished. If our hope in Christ has been for this life only, we are the most unfortunate of all people. But Christ has in fact been raised from the dead, the first-fruits of all who have fallen asleep.

Then fixing his eyes on his disciples he said: ‘How happy are you who are poor: yours is the kingdom of God. Happy you who are hungry now: you shall be satisfied. Happy you who weep now: you shall laugh. Happy are you when people hate you, drive you out, abuse you, denounce your name as criminal, on account of the Son of Man. Rejoice when that day comes and dance for joy, for then your reward will be great in heaven. This was the way their ancestors treated the prophets. ‘But alas for you who are rich: you are having your consolation now. Alas for you who have your fill now: you shall go hungry. Meditation
Crosses that draw us closer to God.In our Gospel today, Jesus did not say that poverty, or hunger, or sadness, or hatred is a blessing. Instead, he said that people are blessed when they are poor, hungry, weeping and hated if and only if these conditions of need and dependence make them rely on God. When we rely on God, we are who we are meant to be, humans in relationship with God our creator. So the poverty, hunger, weeping, hatred, or whatever our cross is can be an instrument to draw us closer to God. Whatever cross we have in our lives is there for a purpose, to keep us close to God. In that sense our cross is also our blessing. Of course Jesus does not mean that in itself it is good to be poor, hungry, weeping or hated. Poverty, hunger, sadness, and hatred are social problems we should strive to conquer. Jesus told the parable of the rich man and Lazarus to remind those with a surplus to help the needy (Luke 16:19-31). When we are rich, filled now, laughing now and are well spoken of now, we may be tempted to forget about God. We may be tempted to treat the gifts of God as gods. So what looks like a blessing in the eyes of the world can, from the spiritual point of view, turn out to be a curse and vice versa.

Gospel: Mark 8:1-10
A great crowd had gathered, and they had nothing to eat. So Jesus called his disciples to him and said to them, ‘I feel sorry for all these people; they have been with me for three days now and have nothing to eat. If I send them off home hungry they will collapse on the way; some have come a great distance.’ His disciples replied, ‘Where could anyone get bread to feed these people in a deserted place like this?’ He asked them, ‘How many loaves have you?’ ‘Seven’ they said. Then he instructed the crowd to sit down on the ground, and he took the seven loaves, and after giving thanks he broke them and handed them to his disciples to distribute; and they distributed them among the crowd. They had a few small fish as well, and over these he said a blessing and ordered them to be distributed also. They ate as much as they wanted, and they collected seven baskets full of the scraps left over. Now there had been about four thousand people. He sent them away and immediately, getting into the boat with his disciples, went to the region of Dalmanutha.

O Lord, our God, who once established these created things to sustain us in our frailty, grant, we pray, that they may become for us now the Sacrament of eternal life. Through Christ our Lord.

Let them thank the Lord for his mercy, his wonders for the children of men, for he satisfies the thirsty soul, and the hungry he fills with good things.

O God, who have willed that we be partakers in the one Bread and the one Chalice, grant us, we pray, so to live that, made one in Christ, we may joyfully bear fruit for the salvation of the world. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
Sin and suffering.Many questions have been asked about sin and suffering, especially innocent suffering or suffering as a consequence of other people’s sin. Some may even question the inheritance of Original Sin for which we should not be liable. We will always have our questions about sin and suffering. But let us listen to what questions God is asking us. In the First Reading, we hear God asking the question: “Where are you?” So even though Adam and Even had sinned, God did not abandon them but searched for them. In the Gospel, we hear Jesus asking another question: “How many loaves have you?” Jesus was not looking at the limitations; he was more interested in possibilities. God is reaching out to us with his questions so that we may look again at our questions about life, about sin and about suffering. Jesus is asking us to put the loaves of our lives with our questions into His hands. From his hands we will receive the Bread of Life that will give us faith and hope.

C’est dans la peine que tu en tireras ta nourriture, tous les jours de ta vie. De lui -même, il te donnera épines et chardons, mais tu auras ta nourriture en cultivant les champs. C’est à la sueur de ton visage que tu gagneras ton pain, jusqu’à ce que tu retournes à la terre dont tu proviens; car tu es poussière, et à la poussière tu retourneras. » L’homme appela sa femme Ève (c’est-à-dire : la vivante), parce qu’elle fut la mère de tous les vivants. Le Seigneur Dieu fit à l’homme et à sa femme des tuniques de peau et les en revêtit. Puis le Seigneur Dieu déclara : « Voilà que l’homme est devenu comme l’un de nous par la connaissance du bien et du mal! Maintenant, ne permettons pas qu’il avance la main, qu’il cueille aussi le fruit de l’arbre de vie, qu’il en mange et vive éternellement ! » Alors le Seigneur Dieu le renvoya du jardin d’Éden, pour qu’il travaille la terre d’où il avait été tiré. Il expulsa l’homme, et il posta, à l’orient du jardin d’Éden, les Kéroubim, armés d’un glaive fulgurant, pour garder l’accès de l’arbre de vie.

- Avant que naissent les montagnes, que tu enfantes la terre et le monde, de toujours à toujours, toi, tu es Dieu.
- Tu fais retourner l’homme à la poussière ; tu as dit: «Retournez, fils d’Adam ! » À tes yeux, mille ans sont comme hier, c’est un jour qui s’en va, une heure dans la nuit.
- Tu les as balayés : ce n’est qu’un songe; dès le matin, c’est une herbe changeante : elle fleurit le matin, elle change ; le soir, elle est fanée, desséchée.
- Apprends-nous la vraie mesure de nos jours : que nos cœurs pénètrent la sagesse. Reviens, Seigneur, pourquoi tarder ? Ravise-toi par égard pour tes serviteurs.
Acclamation
Alléluia. Alléluia. L’homme ne vit pas seulement de pain, mais de toute parole qui sort de la bouche de Dieu. Alléluia. (Mt 4, 4b)
Évangile : Marc 8, 1-10
En ces jours-là, comme il y avait une grande foule, et que les gens n’avaient rien à manger, Jésus appelle à lui ses disciples et leur dit : « J’ai de la compassion pour cette foule, car depuis trois jours déjà ils restent auprès de moi, et n’ont rien à manger. Si je les renvoie chez eux à jeun, ils vont défaillir en chemin, et certains d’entre eux sont venus de loin. » Ses disciples lui répondirent : «Où donc pourra- t-on trouver du pain pour les rassasier ici, dans le désert? » Il leur demanda : « Combien de pains avez-vous ? » Ils lui dirent : « Sept. » Alors il ordonna à la foule de s’asseoir par terre. Puis, prenant les sept pains et rendant grâce, il les rompit, et il les donnait à ses disciples pour que ceux-ci les distribuent ; et ils les distribuèrent à la foule. Ils avaient aussi quelques petits poissons, que Jésus bénit et fit aussi distribuer. Les gens mangèrent et furent rassasiés. On ramassa les morceaux qui restaient : cela faisait sept corbeilles. Or, ils étaient environ quatre mille. Puis Jésus les renvoya. Aussitôt, montant dans la barque avec ses disciples, il alla dans la région de Dalmanoutha.
Prière sur les offrandes
Seigneur notre Dieu, tu as voulu choisir dans ta création le pain et le vin qui refont chaque jour nos forces : Fais qu’ils deviennent aussi pour nous le sacrement de la vie éternelle. Par Jésus.
Antienne de communion : Ps 106, 8-9
Proclamons l’amour du Seigneur, ses merveilles pour les hommes : Il a rassasié ceux qui avaient faim, et désaltéré ceux qui avaient soif.
Prière après la communion
Tu as voulu, Seigneur, que nous partagions un même pain et que nous buvions à la même coupe : Accorde-nous de vivre tellement unis dans le Christ que nous portions du fruit pour le salut du monde. Par Jésus.
Méditation
Sept pains et quelques petits poissons ont suffi à nourrir environ quatre mille hommes. Voici la force transformatrice de la générosité et de la prière. C’est une arme très puissante de développement qu’est la générosité. Apprendre à penser aux autres, à mettre en commun, à savoir que d’autres ont aussi des besoins comme nous. Ce sont autant de pistes de résolutions de crises et de famine qui créent des changements positifs notoires dans la vie d’un peuple.
