Saint Antoine, abbé, mémoire
Saint Antoine le Grand (+ 356). Antoine était un jeune homme riche, propriétaire terrien. Il était tourmenté par la question de son salut. Marqué par le style de vie de la première communauté chrétienne, il entra dans une église où il entendit l’Évangile du jeune homme riche. Il s’appropria ce texte et s’en alla aussitôt distribuer sa fortune aux pauvres et se retira dans le désert de Nitrie (en Égypte) dans un fort militaire abandonné. Il n’avait que vingt ans lorsqu’il se consacra la vie érémitique.

Première lecture : Hébreux 3, 7-14
Comme le dit l’Esprit Saint dans un psaume : Aujourd’hui, si vous entendez sa voix, n’endurcissez pas votre cœur comme au temps du défi, comme au jour de l’épreuve dans le désert, quand vos pères m’ont mis à l’épreuve et provoqué. Alors ils m’ont vu à l’œuvre pendant quarante ans ; oui, je me suis emporté contre cette génération, et j’ai dit : Toujours ils ont le cœur égaré, ils n’ont pas connu mes chemins. Dans ma colère, j’en ai fait le serment : On verra bien s’ils entreront dans mon repos ! Frères, veillez à ce que personne d’entre vous n’ait un cœur mauvais que le manque de foi sépare du Dieu vivant. Au contraire, encouragez-vous les uns l’autre jour après jour, aussi longtemps que retentit « aujourd’hui » de ce psaume, afin que personne parmi vous ne s’endurcisse en se laissant tromper par le péché. Car nous sommes devenus les compagnons du Christ, si du moins nous maintenons fermement, jusqu’à la fin, notre engagement premier.
Psaume 94:6-11
R/ Aujourd’hui ne fermez mais écoutez la voix du Seigneur (Ps. 94, 8)
1. Entrez, inclinez-vous, prosternez-vous, adorons le Seigneur qui nous a faits. Oui, il est notre Dieu; nous sommes le peuple qu’il conduit, le troupeau guidé par sa main.
2. Aujourd’hui écouterez-vous sa parole ? « Ne fermez pas votre cœur comme au désert, comme au jour de tentation et de défi, où vos pères m’ont tenté et provoqué, et pourtant ils avaient vu mon exploit.

Évangile : Marc 1, 40-45
Un lépreux vint auprès de Jésus ; il le supplia et, tombant à ses genoux, lui dit : « Si tu le veux, tu peux me purifier. » Saisi de compassion, Jésus étendit la main, le toucha et lui dit : « Je le veux, sois purifié. » À l’instant même, la lèpre le quitta et il fut purifié. Avec fermeté, Jésus le renvoya aussitôt en lui disant : «Attention, ne dis rien à personne, mais va te montrer au prêtre, et donne pour ta purification ce que Moïse a prescrit dans la Loi : cela sera pour les gens un témoignage.» Une fois parti, cet homme se mit à proclamer et à répandre la nouvelle, de sorte que Jésus ne pouvait plus entrer ouvertement dans une ville, mais restait à l’écart, dans des endroits déserts. De partout cependant on venait à lui.

Daigne accepter, Seigneur, l’offrande de ton peuple : Qu’elle contribue à le sanctifier et lui obtienne ce qu’il demande avec confiance. Par Jésus.

MÉDITATION
Le récit de la purification du lépreux permet de méditer sur la Miséricorde de Dieu envers l’humanité qu’il vient réhabiliter. L’évocation de la lèpre renvoie symboliquement au péché. De même que la lèpre défigure et expose notre corps à la putréfaction, autant le péché déforme et ronge profondément notre âme. L’image de Dieu en nous est déformée, abîmée par le péché. En se laissant approcher par un lépreux et en le touchant, Jésus vient rassurer et relever toute l’humanité envers laquelle il manifeste tout son amour, sa compassion et sa tendresse. Nous savons combien il est difficile de supporter les odeurs dégagées par certains malades dans les hôpitaux. Mais Jésus n’a pas peur de la laideur et la puanteur que nous dégageons. N’ayons donc pas peur ou honte de nous approcher de lui dans la prière et surtout, dans le sacrement de réconciliation pour qu’il puisse nous purifier.

St Antony is the originator of the monastic life. He was born in Egypt: when his parents died, he listened to the words of the Gospel and gave all his belongings to the poor. He lived to be over a hundred years old, and died in 356.

Gospel : Mark 1:40-45
A leper came to Jesus and pleaded on his knees: ‘If you want to’ he said ‘you can cure me.’ Feeling sorry for him, Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him. ‘Of course I want to!’ he said. ‘Be cured!’ And the leprosy left him at once and he was cured. Jesus immediately sent him away and sternly ordered him, ‘Mind you say nothing to anyone, but go and show yourself to the priest, and make the offering for your healing prescribed by Moses as evidence of your recovery.’ The man went away, but then started talking about it freely and telling the story everywhere, so that Jesus could no longer go openly into any town, but had to stay outside in places where nobody lived. Even so, people from all around would come to him.

Meditation
“O that today, you would listen to his voice! ‘Harden not your hearts.’” These words of the psalm which are quoted in the First Reading, capture a central theme of Christianity, which is obedience. Obedience is what makes the difference between children of God and children of the devil. The Christian is the one who hears God’s Word and obeys it. If we disobey God, then we cannot claim to be his children; we are on the side of darkness. The Israelites disobeyed God in the desert, even though they saw his wonders; the man who was healed by Jesus disobeyed Jesus’ instructions and the spread the news of his healing. You have heard God’s Word and you have seen his wonders in your life; are you going to obey him or not? Harden not your heart!

On leaving the synagogue, Jesus went with James and John straight to the house of Simon and Andrew. Now Simon’s mother-in-law had gone to bed with fever, and they told him about her straight away. He went to her, took her by the hand and helped her up. And the fever left her and she began to wait on them. That evening, after sunset, they brought to him all who were sick and those who were possessed by devils. The whole town came crowding round the door, and he cured many who were suffering from diseases of one kind or another; he also cast out many devils, but he would not allow them to speak, because they knew who he was. In the morning, long before dawn, he got up and left the house, and went off to a lonely place and prayed there. Simon and his companions set out in search of him, and when they found him they said, ‘Everybody is looking for you.’ He answered, ‘Let us go elsewhere, to the neighbouring country towns, so that I can preach there too, because that is why I came.’ And he went all through Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and casting out devils.

Meditation
In the First Reading, we learn something that we sometimes take for granted or forget: Jesus knows our human condition, given that he experienced it. He became a human being like us and lived through everything we experience. He knows what it means to be sick, to be broken-hearted, to lose a loved one, to be poor etc. He knows all our problems, because he lived through them himself. And it is precisely to solve these problems that he came. That is why in the Gospel we see him healing people and liberating them from demons. But Jesus is not just a wonder worker; he came to give us true liberation, which is liberation from sin. This liberation comes through accepting his word. This is why his healing is accompanied by preaching. Let us listen to the word of Jesus and let it guide us, and we can be sure to find solutions to life’s problems.

Saint Marcel 1er, pape et martyr ; saint Honorat.
Natif de Rome, il fut le 30e pape (308-309). Il se consacra à la réorganisation de l’Église ravagée par la persécution de Dioclétien. Il géra les cas des chrétiens apostats lors de la persécution de Dèce. Il n’exigea d’eux qu’un acte de pénitence. Ce qui lui valut une animosité de plusieurs chrétiens qui le dénoncèrent à l’empereur. Il fut condamné à être esclave, chargé d’entretenir des écuries dans sa propre église.

Aussitôt, on parla à Jésus de la malade. Jésus s’approcha, la saisit par la main et la fit lever. La fièvre la quitta, et elle les servait. Le soir venu, après le coucher du soleil, on lui amenait tous ceux qui étaient atteints d’un mal ou possédés par des démons. La ville entière se pressait à la porte. Il guérit beaucoup de gens atteints de toutes sortes de maladies, et il expulsa beaucoup de démons ; il empêchait les démons de parler, parce qu’ils savaient, eux, qui il était. Le lendemain, Jésus se leva, bien avant l’aube. Il sortit et se rendit dans un endroit désert, et là il priait. Simon et ceux qui étaient avec lui partirent à sa recherche. Ils le trouvent et lui disent : « Tout le monde te cherche. » Jésus leur dit: « Allons ailleurs, dans les villages voisins, afin que là aussi je proclame l’Évangile ; car c’est pour cela que je suis sorti. » Et il parcourut toute la Galilée, proclamant l’Évangile dans leurs synagogues, et expulsant les démons.

MÉDITATION
Après sa prédication dans la Synagogue où il libère un homme tourmenté par un esprit mauvais, Jésus se rend chez Simon Pierre dont la belle-mère est malade. Jésus rejoint chacun là où il se trouve pour le guérir et le relever. Le relèvement de la belle-mère de Simon et sa promptitude dans le service constituent un témoignage de la présence de Dieu et de son action libératrice au milieu de nous. Jésus est venu nous libérer du péché et nous redonner la vie ; une vie en abondance (Jn 10, 10). Jésus nous redonne la santé, nous remet debout pour que nous puissions à notre tour contribuer au relèvement de nos frères et sœurs, à travers notre engagement sincère et total dans le service des autres. Jésus est l’exemple parfait de ce service généreux et de cette disponibilité, qui doivent caractériser toute notre existence comme chrétien.

God did not appoint angels to be rulers of the world to come, and that world is what we are talking about. Somewhere there is a passage that shows us this. It runs: What is man that you should spare a thought for him, the son of man that you should care for him? For a short while you made him lower than the angels; you crowned him with glory and splendour. You have put him in command of everything. Well then, if he has put him in command of everything, he has left nothing which is not under his command. At present, it is true, we are not able to see that everything has been put under his command, but we do see in Jesus one who was for a short while made lower than the angels and is now crowned with glory and splendour because he submitted to death; by God’s grace he had to experience death for all mankind. As it was his purpose to bring a great many of his sons into glory, it was appropriate that God, for whom everything exists and through whom everything exists, should make perfect, through suffering, the leader who would take them to their salvation. For the one who sanctifies, and the ones who are sanctified, are of the same stock; that is why he openly calls them brothers in the text: I shall announce your name to my brothers, praise you in full assembly.

In their synagogue just then there was a man possessed by an unclean spirit and it shouted, ‘What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are: the Holy One of God.’ But Jesus said sharply, ‘Be quiet! Come out of him!’ And the unclean spirit threw the man into convulsions and with a loud cry went out of him. The people were so astonished that they started asking each other what it all meant. ‘Here is a teaching that is new’ they said ‘and with authority behind it: he gives orders even to unclean spirits and they obey him.’ And his reputation rapidly spread everywhere, through all the surrounding Galilean countryside.

“He gives orders even to unclean spirits and they obey him.” That is just how powerful Jesus Christ is. All evil spirits and demons, and Satan himself, succumb to his authority; when he speaks, they obey. By his death and resurrection, he has been made perfect and has received authority over all things and all living beings in heaven, on earth and beneath the earth. There is nothing he cannot do for you. There is no difficulty he cannot resolve; no problem he cannot solve. Allow him to purify you from your sins. Listen to his teaching and let him make you a member.

Ce n’est pas à des anges que Dieu a soumis le monde à venir, dont nous parlons. Un psaume l’atteste en disant : Qu’est-ce que l’homme pour que tu penses à lui, le fils d’un homme, que tu en prennes souci ? Tu l’as abaissé un peu au-dessous des anges, tu l’as couronné de gloire et d’honneur; tu as mis sous ses pieds toutes choses. Quand Dieu lui a tout soumis, il n’a rien exclu de cette soumission. Maintenant, nous ne voyons pas encore que tout lui soit soumis ; mais Jésus, qui a été abaissé un peu au-dessous des anges, nous le voyons couronné de gloire et d’honneur à cause de sa Passion et de sa mort. Si donc il a fait l’expérience de la mort, c’est, par grâce de Dieu, au profit de tous. Celui pour qui et par qui tout existe voulait conduire une multitude de fils jusqu’à la gloire; c’est pourquoi il convenait qu’il mène à sa perfection, par des souffrances, celui qui est à l’origine de leur salut. Car celui qui sanctifie, et ceux qui sont sanctifiés, doivent tous avoir même origine ; pour cette raison, Jésus n’a pas honte de les appeler ses frères, quand il dit: Je proclamerai ton nom devant mes frères, je te chanterai en pleine assemblée.

Évangile : Marc 1:21-28
Jésus et ses disciples entrèrent à Capharnaüm. Aussitôt, le jour du sabbat, Jésus se rendit à la synagogue, et là, il enseignait. On était frappé par son enseignement, car il enseignait en homme qui a autorité, et non pas comme les scribes. Or, il y avait dans leur synagogue un homme tourmenté par un esprit impur, qui se mit à crier : « Que nous veux-tu, Jésus de Nazareth ? Es-tu venu pour nous perdre ? Je sais qui tu es : tu es le Saint de Dieu. » Jésus l’interpella vivement : « Tais-toi ! Sors de cet homme. » L’esprit impur le fit entrer en convulsions, puis, poussant un grand cri, sortit de lui. Ils furent tous frappés de stupeur et se demandaient entre eux : « Qu’est-ce que cela veut dire ? Voilà un enseignement nouveau, donné avec autorité ! Il commande même aux esprits impurs, et ils lui obéissent. » Sa renommée se répandit aussitôt partout, dans toute la région de la Galilée.

MÉDITATION
Dans l’évangile, il est question de l’autorité de Jésus qui se manifeste dans son enseignement et dans l’expulsion d’un mauvais esprit. En commençant son ministère par un exorcisme, Jésus dévoile le but de sa mission : libérer l’homme de la servitude des forces du mal. Cette libération n’est possible que si nous nous laissons enseigner par lui, à travers l’écoute de sa Parole. Avant d’expulser le mauvais esprit, Jésus commence par enseigner. Ce qui montre clairement que l’enseignement est essentiel dans l’action libératrice de Jésus. La seule Parole de Dieu reçue ou accueillie, est capable de nous « exorciser ». La question qu’il faut se poser est celle de savoir si nous nous laissons d’abord atteindre par la Parole de Dieu, avant d’espérer être débarrassés de tout ce qu’il y a de mauvais en nous, tout ce qui nous éloigne de l’amitié avec Dieu.

Première lecture : Hébreux 1, 1-6

Après l’arrestation de Jean, Jésus partit pour la Galilée proclamer l’Évangile de Dieu ; il disait : « Les temps sont accomplis : le règne de Dieu est tout proche. Convertissez-vous et croyez à l’Évangile. » Passant le long de la mer de Galilée, Jésus vit Simon et André, le frère de Simon, en train de jeter les filets dans la mer, car c’étaient des pêcheurs. Il leur dit : « Venez à ma suite. Je vous ferai devenir pêcheurs d’hommes.» Aussitôt, laissant leurs filets, ils le suivirent. Jésus avança un peu et il vit Jacques, fils de Zébédée, et son frère Jean, qui étaient dans la barque et réparaient les filets. Aussitôt, Jésus les appela. Alors, laissant dans la barque leur père Zébédée avec ses ouvriers, ils partirent à sa suite.

MÉDITATION
L’évangile nous présente le début du ministère de Jésus basé sur la proclamation de la Bonne Nouvelle du salut et l’appel de ses premiers disciples. Aujourd’hui, tout en invitant chacun à la conversion, le Seigneur vient nous rappeler que nous sommes tous invités au salut et personne n’en est exclu. C’est d’ailleurs pourquoi il choisit de s’entourer de personnes simples et si ordinaires pour participer à sa mission. Jésus se soucie peu de nos compétences, de nos qualités ou de nos aptitudes, encore moins de nos mérites. Ce qui compte, c’est notre « oui ». Il nous appelle d’abord et nous qualifie après. Comme Simon, André, Jacques et Jean, saurons-nous répondre à son appel avec la même spontanéité et la même disponibilité ?

First reading: Hebrews 1:1-6

Meditation
If you have any doubts about the identity of Jesus, then today’s First Reading should clear them. Jesus is the only Son of God; he is the perfect copy of God’s nature; through him all things were made, and he maintains all things by his word; he is seated at God’s right hand; all God’s angels worship him. What could all this mean, except that Jesus is God, that he is the alpha and the omega, that he is the one through whom all good things come? It is this Jesus that is calling you today to repent and believe in his message. It is this Jesus that is calling you to follow him and be a fisher of men. He wants you to join him in saving souls and spreading his word and making the world experience his love and mercy. What is your response to his call?

Meditation
Those baptised as infants or young children at times tend to forget the significance of this event. Celebrating the baptism of Jesus gives us an opportunity to reflect on what it means for us to be baptised. Four aspects of Jesus’ baptism can help us to discover the meaning of this sacrament. Firstly, the baptism Jesus received was a baptism of conversion for the forgiveness of sins. Jesus did not need conversion, but accepted this baptism in order to identify himself with sinful humanity, which he had come to save. Secondly, when Jesus was baptised, the Holy Spirit descended on him. Thirdly, the Father’s voice identified him as his Son. And fourthly, after his baptism, Jesus began his work of preaching the Gospel and healing people. These four elements tell us that through baptism, we have been cleansed from sin, we have received the Holy Spirit, we have become children of God, and we have become servants of God who are supposed to preach his Word and extend his love to those around us. Are we living like children of God? Have we eradicated sin from our lives? Do we let God’s Spirit guide our actions? Are we bearing witness to Christ in the world? May Jesus help us to be faithful to our baptismal promises.

Deuxième lecture : Act 10, 34-38
En ces jours-là, quand Pierre arriva à Césarée, chez un centurion de l’armée romaine, il prit la parole et dit : « En vérité, je le comprends, Dieu est impartial: il accueille, quelle que soit la nation, celui qui le craint et dont les œuvres sont justes. Telle est la parole qu’il a envoyée aux fils d’Israël, en leur annonçant la bonne nouvelle de la paix par Jésus Christ, lui qui est le Seigneur de tous. Vous savez ce qui s’est passé à travers tout le pays des Juifs, depuis les commencements en Galilée, après le baptême proclamé par Jean : Jésus de Nazareth, Dieu lui a donné l’onction d’Esprit Saint et de puissance. Jean s’adressa alors à tous : « Moi, je vous baptise avec de l’eau ; mais il vient, celui qui est plus fort que moi. Je ne suis pas digne de dénouer la courroie de ses sandales. Lui vous baptisera dans l’Esprit Saint et le feu. Comme tout le peuple se faisait baptiser et qu’après avoir été baptisé lui aussi, Jésus priait, le ciel s’ouvrit. L’Esprit Saint, sous une apparence corporelle, comme une colombe, descendit sur Jésus, et il y eut une voix venant du ciel : « Toi, tu es mon Fils bien-aimé ; en toi, je trouve ma joie. »

MÉDITATION
Jean reconnait que son baptême est différent de celui de Jésus. Le baptême conféré par Jean a une valeur purificatrice ; c’est un baptême de conversion. Celui de Jésus, par contre, a une valeur salvatrice. En effet, si l’eau lave et purifie, Seul l’Esprit Saint sanctifie et, sauve par le Christ. Il nous confère le don de l’Esprit-Saint. Le baptême que Jésus reçoit n’a rien à voir avec la purification des péchés qu’il n’a jamais commis. En recevant le baptême, Jésus se fait solidaire de l’humanité pécheresse. Ce baptême exprime l’investiture ou l’intronisation du Fils par le Père à travers l’Esprit-Saint. Jésus, Envoyé spécial de Dieu pour établir son Règne reçoit solennellement son ordre de mission. C’est justement la réalisation de cette mission qui va se déployer tout au long de son ministère public que nous sommes appelés à contempler durant ce temps ordinaire qui commence.
