Saint Barnard
Originaire de la région de Lyon, il se marie et vit à la cour de l’empereur Charlemagne. En accord avec sa femme, après sept ans de vie commune il se consacre à Dieu au monastère d’Ambronay-01500, en Bresse. Il est nommé archevêque de Vienne sur le Rhône, en 810. En 837, il fonde l’abbaye de Romans où il mourut.

Première lecture: Hb 7, 1-3.15-17
Frères, Melkisédek était roi de Salem, prêtre du Dieu très- haut; il vint à la rencontre d’Abraham quand celui- ci rentrait de son expédition contre les rois ; il le bénit, et Abraham lui remit le dixième de tout ce qu’il avait pris. D’abord, Melkisédek porte un nom qui veut dire « roi de justice» ; ensuite, il est roi de Salem, c’est- à- dire roi « de paix», et à son sujet on ne parle ni de père ni de mère, ni d’ancêtres, ni d’un commencement d’existence ni d’une fin de vie ; cela le fait ressembler au Fils de Dieu : il demeure prêtre pour toujours. Les choses sont encore beaucoup plus claires si un autre prêtre se lève à la ressemblance de Melkisédek et devient prêtre, non pas selon une exigence légale de filiation humaine, mais par la puissance d’une vie indestructible. En ce temps-là, Jésus entra de nouveau dans une synagogue ; il y avait là un homme dont la main était atrophiée. On observait Jésus pour voir s’il le guérirait le jour du sabbat. C’était afin de pouvoir l’accuser. Il dit à l’homme qui avait la main atrophiée : « Lève-toi, viens au milieu. » Et s’adressant aux autres : « Est- il permis, le jour du sabbat, de faire le bien ou de faire le mal ? de sauver une vie ou de tuer ? » Mais eux se taisaient. Alors, promenant sur eux un regard de colère, navré de l’endurcissement de leurs cœurs, il dit à l’homme: «Étends la main. » Il l’étendit, et sa main redevint normale. MÉDITATION
Hier, nous avons vu que, tout en reconnaissant la sainteté du sabbat, Jésus l’extirpe du légalisme pharisaïque. Le sabbat désigne le jour de repos des juifs, en souvenir du septième jour de la création. Le sabbat fut aussi institué en souvenir de la libération d’Israël de l’esclavage d’Égypte et de l’Alliance établie par Dieu avec son peuple. Le sabbat apparaît ainsi comme le jour de libération pour l’humanité. C’est cette libération que Jésus apporte aujourd’hui à cet homme dont la main paralysée retrouve sa guérison. L’attitude contestataire et hostile des Pharisiens montre clairement l’enfermement, l’acharnement contre Jésus qu’ils veulent piéger. Puisse notre observance scrupuleuse des prescriptions religieuses être motivée par l’amour libérateur du Christ et préservée de toute instrumentalisation. Il s’agit d’être au service de la religion pour libérer et non l’utiliser pour asservir, opprimer ou tuer les autres.

First reading: Hebrews 6:10-20
God would not be so unjust as to forget all you have done, the love that you have for his name or the services you have done, and are still doing, for the saints. Our one desire is that every one of you should go on showing the same earnestness to the end, to the perfect fulfilment of our hopes, never growing careless, but imitating those who have the faith and the perseverance to inherit the promises. When God made the promise to Abraham, he swore by his own self, since it was impossible for him to swear by anyone greater: I will shower blessings on you and give you many descendants. Because of that, Abraham persevered and saw the promise fulfilled. Men, of course, swear an oath by something greater than themselves, and between men, confirmation by an oath puts an end to all dispute. Meditation
Among the Jewish people, the priest was the representative of the people before God. He offered sacrifices to God on behalf of the people, in order to obtain for them God’s forgiveness and blessings. Melchisedek was a priest of God, and he blessed Abraham. Jesus is the high priest par excellence, who intercedes for us at God’s right hand and obtains for us the fullness of God’s blessings. In today’s Gospel, he gives healing to a sick man. We all are priests by virtue of our baptism. We too should intercede for those around us. We should offer prayers for them to obtain forgiveness and blessings for them. We should make them experience God’s love and healing by our availability, sympathy, willingness to help and thirst for justice

Frères, Dieu n’est pas injuste: il n’oublie pas votre action ni l’amour que vous avez manifesté à son égard, en vous mettant au service des fidèles et en vous y tenant. Notre désir est que chacun d’entre vous manifeste le même empressement jusqu’à la fin, pour que votre espérance se réalise pleinement; ne devenez pas paresseux, imitez plutôt ceux qui, par la foi et la persévérance, obtiennent l’héritage promis. Quand Dieu fit la promesse à Abraham, comme il ne pouvait prêter serment par quelqu’un de plus grand que lui, il prêta serment par lui- même, et il dit : Je te comblerai de bénédictions et je multiplierai ta descendance. Et ainsi, par sa persévérance, Abraham a obtenu ce que Dieu lui avait promis. Les hommes prêtent serment par un plus grand qu’eux, et le serment est entre eux une garantie qui met fin à toute discussion ; Dieu a donc pris le moyen du serment quand il a voulu montrer aux héritiers de la promesse, de manière encore plus claire, que sa décision était irrévocable. Dieu s’est ainsi engagé doublement de façon irrévocable, et il est impossible que Dieu ait menti. Cela nous encourage fortement, nous qui avons cherché refuge dans l’espérance qui nous était proposée et que nous avons saisie. Cette espérance, nous la tenons comme une ancre sûre et solide pour l’âme; elle entre au-delà du rideau, dans le Sanctuaire où Jésus est entré pour nous en précurseur, lui qui est devenu grand prêtre de l’ordre de Melkisédek pour l’éternité.

MÉDITATION
Face aux Pharisiens scandalisés par l’attitude de ses disciples qui bravent la loi Sabbatique, Jésus montre que dans des situations extrêmes, la dérogation d’une loi, quelle qu’elle soit, ne saurait conduire nécessairement à une condamnation. En affirmant que le Sabbat a été fait pour l’homme, et non l’homme pour le Sabbat, Jésus redonne au Sabbat son sens véritable: la libération de l’homme. Tout en reconnaissant la sainteté du Sabbat, Jésus l’extirpe du carcan rigoriste et légaliste dans lequel l’avaient enfermé les Pharisiens. Le précepte du repos sabbatique ne saurait être subordonné à un besoin vital, car le bien de la personne doit être au fondement de toute loi. Dans le cas contraire, cette loi devient liberticide ou oppressive. S’il est légitime et important d’avoir un grand amour pour la Loi, c’est encore mieux de vivre de la Loi d’Amour.

SAINT AGNES, VIRGIN AND MARTYR
As with so many of the early Roman martyrs, very little is now known about Agnes’ life. Agnes was filled with the love of God from an early age, vowed herself to celibacy, and when the opportunity of martyrdom arose, she did not hide away but stepped forward and took it.

First reading: Hebrews 5:1-10
Every high priest has been taken out of mankind and is appointed to act for men in their relations with God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins; and so he can sympathise with those who are ignorant or uncertain because he too lives in the limitations of weakness. That is why he has to make sin offerings for himself as well as for the people. No one takes this honour on himself, but each one is called by God, as Aaron was. Nor did Christ give himself the glory of becoming high priest, but he had it from the one who said to him: You are my son, today I have become your father, and in another text: You are a priest of the order of Melchizedek, and for ever. During his life on earth, he offered up prayer and entreaty, aloud and in silent tears, to the one who had the power to save him out of death, and he submitted so humbly that his prayer was heard. Although he was Son, he learnt to obey through suffering; but having been made perfect, he became for all who obey him the source of eternal salvation and was acclaimed by God with the title of high priest of the order of Melchizedek.

Meditation
Christianity is a religion of joy. We Christians should be joyful people, because we have been saved from sin and death and made children of God. We therefore have no reason to be sad. We are united to God through Jesus; why then should we be sad? This is why Jesus says that the guests at a wedding feast do not fast when the groom is with them. Jesus, our groom is with us! But our groom is no longer physically present with us in this world. He has been taken away from us; he is with us in spirit, not in the body. We long for the day when he will come again and we will be united to him forever. For this reason, during our earthly lives we fast. Our fasting and other acts of piety should therefore take on a new meaning; they should help us to overcome all that separate us from God and make us love our neighbour more and more. They should take us closer to Jesus and hasten the coming of his kingdom, so that when he comes again our happiness will be complete.

Frères les dons de la grâce sont variés, mais c’est le même Esprit. Les services sont variés, mais c’est le même Seigneur. Les activités sont variées, mais c’est le même Dieu qui agit en tout et en tous. À chacun est donnée la manifestation de l’Esprit en vue du bien. À celui-ci est donnée, par l’Esprit, une parole de sagesse ; à un autre, une parole de connaissance, selon le même Esprit; un autre reçoit, dans le même Esprit, un don de foi ; un autre encore, dans l’unique Esprit, des dons de guérison ; à un autre est donné d’opérer des miracles, à un autre de prophétiser, à un autre de discerner les inspirations ; à l’un, de parler diverses langues mystérieuses ; à l’autre, de les interpréter. Mais celui qui agit en tout cela, c’est l’unique et même Esprit : il distribue ses dons, comme il le veut, à chacun en particulier.

En ce temps-là, il y eut un mariage à Cana de Galilée. La mère de Jésus était là. Jésus aussi avait été invité au mariage avec ses disciples. Or, on manqua de vin. La mère de Jésus lui dit : « Ils n’ont pas de vin. » Jésus lui répond : « Femme, que me veux-tu? Mon heure n’est pas encore venue. » Sa mère dit à ceux qui servaient: « Tout ce qu’il vous dira, faites-le. » Or, il y avait là six jarres de pierre pour les purifications rituelles des Juifs; chacune contenait deux à trois mesures, (c’est-à-dire environ cent litres). Jésus dit à ceux qui servaient : « Remplissez d’eau les jarres. » Et ils les remplirent jusqu’au bord. Il leur dit : « Maintenant, puisez, et portez-en au maître du repas. » Ils lui en portèrent. Et celui-ci goûta l’eau changée en vin. Il ne savait pas d’où venait ce vin, mais ceux qui servaient le savaient bien, eux qui avaient puisé l’eau. Alors le maître du repas appelle le marié et lui dit : « Tout le monde sert le bon vin en premier et, lorsque les gens ont bien bu, on apporte le moins bon. Mais toi, tu as gardé le bon vin jusqu’à maintenant. » Tel fut le commencement des signes que Jésus accomplit. C’était à Cana de Galilée. Il manifesta sa gloire, et ses disciples crurent en lui.

MÉDITATION
C’est aux noces de Cana que Jésus accomplit son premier miracle. Ce récit donne l’essentiel de ce que sera la vie du Fils de Dieu au milieu de l’humanité. Une vie toute donnée pour le bonheur et le salut de toute l’humanité. Par son Incarnation, non seulement Jésus épouse l’humanité, mais il la fait participer à sa mission salvatrice. Jésus aurait pu opérer son miracle sans impliquer ses disciples. Nous sommes invités à collaborer à l’œuvre de salut. Saint Augustin dit à cet effet que si Dieu nous a créés sans nous, il ne peut pas nous sauver sans nous. L’eau que les disciples remplissent constitue leur apport, leur effort et traduit leur bonne volonté, leur adhésion. C’est justement cela la foi : la ferme adhésion à la Parole de Dieu. Notre action ou notre participation à l’œuvre salvifique, quoique modeste, reste nécessaire.

One may have the gift of preaching with wisdom given him by the Spirit; another may have the gift of preaching instruction given him by the same Spirit; and another the gift of faith given by the same Spirit; another again the gift of healing, through this one Spirit; one, the power of miracles; another, prophecy; another the gift of recognising spirits; another the gift of tongues and another the ability to interpret them. All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, who distributes different gifts to different people just as he chooses.

My hour has not come yet.’ His mother said to the servants, ‘Do whatever he tells you.’ There were six stone water jars standing there, meant for the ablutions that are customary among the Jews: each could hold twenty or thirty gallons. Meditation
Our readings today give us a message of hope. When we look at our lives today, we have many reasons to be discouraged. The difficulties we face in our lives, coupled with the injustice and lack of love which we witness in our society, can make us think that we have nothing to live for. God invites us not to give in to despair, but to trust in his capacity to change all things for the better. Jesus is an embodiment of this hope. In today’s Gospel, he steps in to salvage a situation that could have been catastrophic; at the moment when the wedding feast could have become a big embarrassment, he performed a sign to put a smile on the faces of the people present. He can intervene in the same way in our world and in our lives to make a change when all seems to be lost. Let us believe in him, like his disciples did, and count on him in every situation. With Jesus, there is always hope, even when all hope seems to be lost.

En ce temps-là, Jésus sortit de nouveau le long de la mer ; toute la foule venait à lui, et il les enseignait. En passant, il aperçut Lévi, fils d’Alphée, assis au bureau des impôts. Il lui dit : « Suis-moi. » L’homme se leva et le suivit. Comme Jésus était à table dans la maison de Lévi, beaucoup de publicains (c’est-à-dire des collecteurs d’impôts) et beaucoup de pécheurs vinrent prendre place avec Jésus et ses disciples, car ils étaient nombreux à le suivre. Les scribes du groupe des pharisiens, voyant qu’il mangeait avec les pécheurs et les publicains, disaient à ses disciples : « Comment! Il mange avec les publicains et les pécheurs ! » Jésus, qui avait entendu, leur déclara : « Ce ne sont pas les gens bien portants qui ont besoin du médecin, mais les malades. Je ne suis pas venu appeler des justes, mais des pécheurs. »

MÉDITATION
Jésus ne nous appelle pas du fait de nos mérites. Bien au contraire, nos faiblesses ou nos infirmités constituent des lieux de rencontre avec le Seigneur. Dieu ne nous appelle pas parce que nous sommes saints, mais parce qu’il veut faire de nous des saints. « Soyez donc parfaits comme votre Père céleste est parfait» (Mt 5, 48). Notre vocation en tant que baptisé consiste à cheminer vers la perfection ou la sainteté et ceci, quelle que soit notre vie passée ou présente. Le salut est offert à tous, même aux pécheurs les plus endurcis. Le Seigneur regarde non pas les apparences, mais notre cœur. Il ne nous enferme pas dans des clichés et les préjugés. Plutôt que de juger et d’exclure les autres à cause de leurs péchés, nous avons la responsabilité et le devoir de les approcher et même de les fréquenter pour leur manifester la miséricorde de Dieu.

St. Fillan, son of Feriach was also known as Foelan. Extravagant miracles attributed to him, such as the one in which his prayers caused a wolf that had killed the ox he was using to drag materials to the church he was building. Fillan died on January 19.

Meditation
“The word of God is something alive and active.” “Your words are spirit, Lord, and they are life.” To say that the word of God is alive and active, or to say that the word of God is life, is to say that this word brings about change. It has a transforming power; it produces concrete results in the life of the person who listens to it and acts according to it. The case of Levi, better known as Matthew, is a shining example. He heard just two words from the mouth of Jesus: “Follow me,” and his life changed dramatically. He abandoned a life of cheating and extortion and became a follower of Jesus, and later he wrote one of the Gospels which we read today. Let us allow the word of God to transform us in a similar way. Let us read it, listen to it, and meditate on it day and night. Let us make it the light that guides our footsteps, the compass that points the way for us through the ocean of life. It will purify and transform our lives and bring us the true happiness we all seek, and which God alone can give.

Frères, craignons donc, tant que demeure la promesse d’entrer dans le repos de Dieu, craignons que l’un d’entre vous n’arrive, en quelque sorte, trop tard. Certes, nous avons reçu une Bonne Nouvelle, comme ces gens-là ; cependant, la parole entendue ne leur servit à rien, parce qu’elle ne fut pas accueillie avec foi par ses auditeurs. Mais nous qui sommes venus à la foi, nous entrons dans le repos dont il est dit: Dans ma colère, j’en ai fait le serment: On verra bien s’ils entreront dans mon repos ! Le travail de Dieu, assurément, était accompli depuis la fondation du monde, comme l’Écriture le dit à propos du septième jour : Et Dieu se reposa le septième jour de tout son travail. Et dans le psaume, de nouveau : On verra bien s’ils entreront dans mon repos! Empressons-nous donc d’entrer dans ce repos-là, afin que plus personne ne tombe en suivant l’exemple de ceux qui ont refusé de croire.

Quand Jésus revint à Capharnaüm, et l’on apprit qu’il était à la maison. Tant de monde s’y rassembla qu’il n’y avait plus de place, pas même devant la porte, et il leur annonçait la Parole. Arrivent des gens qui lui amènent un paralysé, porté par quatre hommes. Comme ils ne peuvent l’approcher à cause de la foule, ils découvrent le toit au-dessus de lui, ils font une ouverture, et descendent le brancard sur lequel était couché le paralysé. Voyant leur foi, Jésus dit au paralysé : « Mon enfant, tes péchés sont pardonnés.» Or, il y avait quelques scribes, assis là, qui raisonnaient en eux-mêmes: « Pourquoi celui-là parle-t-il ainsi? Il blasphème. Qui donc peut pardonner les péchés, sinon Dieu seul ? » Percevant aussitôt dans son esprit les raisonnements qu’ils se faisaient, Jésus leur dit : « Pourquoi tenez-vous de tels raisonnements? Qu’est-ce qui est le plus facile? Dire à ce paralysé : “Tes péchés sont pardonnés”, ou bien lui dire : “Lève-tôt, prends ton brancard et marche”? Eh bien ! Pour que vous sachiez que le Fils de l’homme a autorité pour pardonner les péchés sur la terre… – Jésus s’adressa au paralysé – je te le dis, lève-tôt, prends ton brancard, et rentre dans ta maison. » Il se leva, prit aussitôt son brancard, et sortit devant tout le monde. Tous étaient frappés de stupeur et rendaient gloire à Dieu, en disant : « Nous n’avons jamais rien vu de pareil. »

MÉDITATION
Le fait de descendre le paralysé par le toit montre la détermination et l’ingéniosité de ceux qui le font. C’est grâce à leur foi et non à celle du paralysé (dont rien n’est dit) qu’il reçoit de Jésus le pardon de ses péchés. Ce paralysé, écrasé par de longues années de souffrance, était meurtri dans son cœur et certainement fragilisé dans sa foi. Pour arriver à Jésus et obtenir sa guérison, il n’avait pas besoin que de l’aide physique des porteurs, mais aussi de leur soutien spirituel. Dans nos moments d’épreuves ou d’extrême souffrance, la foi des autres soutient la nôtre affaiblie ou perdue. Notre responsabilité est ainsi engagée devant les peines de nos frères et sœurs ; d’où l’impérieux devoir de la prière d’intercession. La foi n’est pas une aventure solitaire, mais une marche solidaire et communautaire.

He was Bishop of Tours, France. A senator at Tours, he was initially married, supposedly to a most unpleasant wife. Named bishop of the city in 488, he was forced to leave the see in 496 by the Arian Visigoths, and went to Spain. He died perhaps in Toulouse, or in Spain, possibly as a martyr.

Be careful: the promise of reaching the place of rest that God had for the Israelites still holds good, and none of you must think that he has come too late for it. We received the Good News exactly as they did; but hearing the message did them no good because they did not share the faith of those who listened. We, however, who have faith, shall reach a place of rest, as in the text: And so, in anger, I swore that not one would reach the place of rest I had for them. God’s work was undoubtedly all finished at the beginning of the world; as one text says, referring to the seventh day: After all his work God rested on the seventh day. The text we are considering says: They shall not reach the place of rest I had for them. We must therefore do everything we can to reach this place of rest, or some of you might copy this example of disobedience and be lost.

Seeing their faith, Jesus said to the paralytic, ‘My child, your sins are forgiven.’ Now some scribes were sitting there, and they thought to themselves, ‘How can this man talk like that? He is blaspheming. Who can forgive sins but God?’ Jesus, inwardly aware that this was what they were thinking, said to them, ‘Why do you have these thoughts in your hearts? Which of these is easier: to say to the paralytic, “Your sins are forgiven” or to say, “Get up, pick up your stretcher and walk”? But to prove to you that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins,’ – he turned to the paralytic – ‘I order you: get up, pick up your stretcher, and go off home.’ And the man got up, picked up his stretcher at once and walked out in front of everyone, so that they were all astounded and praised God saying, ‘We have never seen anything like this.’

Meditation
The men who took the paralysed man to Jesus had faith in Jesus. They were convinced that Jesus could heal the paralysed man, and it was because of this conviction that Jesus healed the man. It is this unshakeable faith that the Israelites lacked; they rebelled against God when they were in the desert, and as a result, they did not inherit the rest God had promised them. It is this unshakeable faith that we would have in God if we hope to inherit the rest he has promised us in Jesus Christ, which is eternal life. Let us trust in Jesus and abide by his Word, in order to be happy with him forever in heaven.
