Meditation
“Renounce yourself, take up your cross and follow me.” Lent is a time for conversion, and if we want to achieve conversion we must first renounce ourselves. To renounce oneself is to abandon one’s will in favour of God’s will. Jesus asked his Father in the garden of Gethsemane to take the cup of suffering away from if he could; but he said God’s will, and not his will, should be done. We have to deny all the desires and habits that we are attached to but which go against God’s will; we have to desire what God wants over what we want. Secondly, we must take up our cross and follow Jesus. Jesus carried his cross all the way to Calvary; we must accept to bear with all the challenges, difficulties and sufferings that come as part of human life or as a result of our being followers of Jesus. Moses reminds us that life is choice between blessing and curse; to choose the blessing is to choose to die to ourselves and embrace suffering, like Jesus did. It is only by suffering with Jesus that we will triumph with him.

Lent is a solemn period of preparation that lasts for 40 days, not counting Sundays, and is traditionally marked by prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, leading up to Easter Sunday, the celebration of Jesus Christ’s resurrection. It is a time of testing and spiritual growth for Jesus, mirroring the opportunity for Catholics to grow closer to God. Lent is also a time for inner transformation. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, signified by the receiving of ashes as a reminder of mortality and the need for repentance. The final week of Lent is known as Holy Week, which leads up to Easter Sunday.
During Lent, there is an increased focus on Prayer and attending church services, especially the Stations of the Cross. Reading scripture and personal reection are
encouraged. entails sacrifice Fasting and self-discipline. Many Catholics observe fasting and abstinence during Lent. Traditionally, Catholics abstain from meat on all
Fridays of the year, and some choose to give up something they enjoy for Lent. This act of sacrifice is meant to symbolise Jesus’ fasting, temptation and sacrifice on the cross. Lent is a time for increased generosity towards those in need through almsgiving.
Catholics are encouraged to donate to charities, volunteer their time, or perform acts of kindness.
Lent in 2025 holds a special signicance within the designated Jubilee Year focusing on the «Pilgrims of Hope”. This theme beautifully sets the tone for the Lenten season.
This Jubilee Year’s theme emphasises the concept of a journey – a pilgrimage towards a brighter future filled with hope. Lent, with its introspective practices, becomes a perfect opportunity to embark on this hopeful pilgrimage. By embracing the spirit of «Pilgrims of Hope,» let us embark on a journey of personal growth and contribute to a world filled with greater hope.

Meditation
“Let your hearts be broken, not your garments torn.” Lent is a season of intense spiritual revival. It is a period during which we focus intently on the reality of sin; we remember that we are sinners and because of our sins Jesus died on the cross. For this reason, we resolve to reconcile ourselves with God, as St. Paul exhorts us to do in the Second Reading, and the Church proposes charity, prayer and fasting as three tools for this reconciliation. But Jesus makes it clear in the Gospel that these practices will bear no fruit if they are mere outward acts that do not transform our hearts. We should perform works of charity out of a sincere desire to think less about ourselves and make sacrifices for others. Our prayer should be a true dialogue with God in which we listen to him and ask him for his sanctifying grace. Our fasting should be a real effort to subdue our desires and control our passions, in order to fight against sin. In short, Lent is a time when we make an extra effort at true conversion. May this 40 day period bring about a genuine change in our relationship with God and our neighbour.

Le carême nous rappelle chaque année les quarante ans passés dans le désert par les hébreux avant de rallier la terre promise. C’est aussi le souvenir des quarante jours passés par Jésus au désert entre son baptême et le début de sa vie publique. Ainsi le chiffre quarante devient donc symbolique, il est requis pour préparer le combat spirituel. Il est aussi requis pour préparer un nouveau départ, dans le sens d’un recommencement avec Dieu. De ces explications transparaît clairement que le temps de carême est fondamentalement un temps d’effort, de renoncement et de conversion
Le carême nous donne de nous rapprocher davantage de Dieu par une vie de prière et d’être proche des hommes en leur rendant service de manière désintéressée. Cela requiert la disponibilité et l’amour du prochain comme le Christ le recommande dans les Saintes Écritures. Un carême bien vécu ne saurait donc ignorer l’abstinence et même la continence qui ouvrent les portes au partage avec les pauvres et nécessiteux de nos villes et villages.
Voilà pourquoi l’Église insiste généralement sur trois pratiques pour vivre pleinement ce temps précieux. D’abord le jeûne qui est une forme de privation qui arrache notre vie et surtout notre coeur á la dépendance matérielle et aux autres formes de dépendances.
Le partage ou l’aumône est une invitation vivre á en frère ou avec les frères. L’aumône est liée au jeune dont il indique le sens des privations.
La prière est le troisième pilier du carême. Elle est une invitation á vivre en fils de Dieu. Si un fils ne peut vivre sans relation avec son père, il faut rappeler que c’est par la prière que nous construisons et maintenons une relation particulière avec Dieu notre père. Par la prière on se remplit de la présence de Dieu ou mieux on laisse Dieu nous remplir de sa présence.
Pratiquer la prière , le jeûne et l’ aumône pendant le temps. de carême attire la miséricorde de Dieu sur l’homme.

Pauvre et torturée par l’asthme, Bernadette (1844-1879) a quatorze ans quand, dans la grotte de Massabielle, à Lourdes, lui apparaît dix-huit fois celle qui se nommera : “l’Immaculée Conception”. “Si la sainte Vierge en avait trouvé une plus ignorante que moi, c’est elle qu’elle aurait choisie”, dira Bernadette, devenue Sœur Marie Bernard en 1866 chez les Sœurs de la Charité de Nevers. Ce mot dit bien l’humilité de celle qui accepta inlassablement souffrances et humiliations pour le salut des pécheurs.

Celui qui n’a pas connu le péché, Dieu l’a pour nous identifié au péché, afin qu’en lui nous devenions justes de la justice même de Dieu. En tant que coopérateurs de Dieu, nous vous exhortons encore à ne pas laisser sans effet la grâce reçue de lui. Car il dit dans l’Écriture: Au moment favorable je t’ai exaucé, au jour du salut je t’ai secouru. Le voici maintenant le moment favorable, le voici maintenant le jour du salut.

En t’offrant, au début du carême, cette eucharistie, nous te supplions, Seigneur: Inspire-nous des actes de pénitence et de charité qui nous détournent de nous-mêmes, afin que, purifiés de nos fautes, nous puissions mieux nous unir à la passion de ton Fils. Lui qui.

Méditation
Frères et Sœurs en Christ, nous entrons en ce jour dans l’un des temps fort de l’Eglise à savoir le temps de carême. Durant cette période, le fidèle chrétien est appelé mettre en valeur le jeûne, la prière et le partage. Ces piliers, nous devons les accomplir dans la sobriété et la discrétions la plus totale comme nous disent les textes du jour pour pouvoir obtenir de la part de Dieu des bienfaits. L’invitation à “déchirer nos coeurs et non nos vêtements” traduit d’avantage l’importance de ce travail intérieur que nous devons faire.

LES SEPT SAINTS FONDATEURS DES SERVITES DE MARIE

1ère lecture : Jc 1, 12-18

Méditation
C’est dans les épreuves que l’on peut savoir si l’on a la foi ou pas. L’attitude des disciples en ce jour laisse entendre qu’on peut être proche du Seigneur sans pour autant avoir la foi encore moins son corollaire qu’est l’espérance. Or, c’est en persévérant qu’on pourra obtenir la récompense promise au disciple fidèle.

Meditation
“Blessed is he who perseveres in temptation.” Temptation is not sin; it is an invitation to sin. Temptation does not come from God, for God does not want us to sin; it comes from the Evil One, who seeks to lead us astray. He tempts us through our desires, which in themselves are not bad but can lead us into sin. We all possess bodily urges, as well as aspirations to social, political and economic advancement and recognition. The devil tempts us by proposing means of satisfying these desires which are quick and effective, but which go contrary to what God expects of us. We can see this with the Pharisees; in their desire to observe the Law of Moses, they got carried away by the desire for self-aggrandisement, and as a result they became more interested in showing off their piety than teaching love and justice. This was why Jesus warned his disciples to beware of the yeast of the scribes and Pharisees, that is, of their teaching. May God grant us the wisdom to see the devil’s plans to mislead us and the courage to resist temptation and remain faithful to Jesus.

Méditation
Il y une différence entre la sagesse et la ruse. La sagesse est divine et la ruse est diabolique. L’action des pharisiens en ce jour relève de la ruse. Ils veulent par leur subterfuge, faire tombé le Christ. Cette attitude est celle que manifestent généralement bon nombres d’entre nous dans leur prière. Ceux là vont vers le Christ non pas pour mieux le découvrir en réalité mais pour qu’il leur prouve sa divinité à travers des œuvres. Le Christ n’a rien à nous prouver et n’est aucunement obligé de le faire. Lorsque nous nous approchons de lui avec de telle pensée, sachons d’avance que nous n’obtiendrons rien de lui. La sagesse est le fruit d’une foi pleinement assumée.

Meditation
“No sign will be given to this generation.” Jesus had preached and performed countless signs among the people, but the Pharisees still did not believe in him. Their request for a sign from heaven was an indication of their lack of faith. It is this lack of faith that St. James condemns in the First Reading; the man who doubts, he says, is a man of two minds and cannot obtain anything from God. If we want God to answer our prayers, we must pray in faith. As Jesus says, when we ask God for something in prayer, we should believe that we have already obtained it, it will be given to us (Mk 11: 24). Our relationship with God should not depend on signs and wonders; rather, it should be grounded on our firm conviction that God can and will do all that he says in his Word. May God rid our hearts of every trace of doubt and give us the gift of faith in his Son Jesus Christ. May we develop the faith that makes us pray with total confidence and stand firm when trials come our way.

Si tu le veux, tu peux observer les commandements, il dépend de ton choix de rester fidèle. Le Seigneur a mis devant toi l’eau et le feu : étends la main vers ce que tu préfères. La vie et la mort sont proposées aux hommes, l’une ou l’autre leur est donnée selon leur choix. Car la sagesse du Seigneur est grande, fort est son pouvoir, et il voit tout. Ses regards sont tournés vers ceux qui le craignent, il connaît toutes les actions des hommes. Il n’a commandé à personne d’être impie, il n’a donné à personne la permission de pécher.

Lecture de la première lettre de saint Paul apôtre aux Corinthiens
Frères, c’est bien de sagesse que nous parlons devant ceux qui sont adultes dans la foi, mais ce n’est pas la sagesse de ce monde, la sagesse de ceux qui dirigent ce monde et qui vont à leur destruction. Au contraire, ce dont nous parlons, c’est de la sagesse du mystère de Dieu, sagesse tenue cachée, établie par lui dès avant les siècles, pour nous donner la gloire. Aucun de ceux qui dirigent ce monde ne l’a connue, car, s’ils l’avaient connue, ils n’auraient jamais crucifié le Seigneur de gloire. Mais ce que nous proclamons, c’est, comme dit l’Écriture : ce que l’œil n’a pas vu, ce que l’oreille n’a pas entendu, ce qui n’est pas venu à l’esprit de l’homme, ce que Dieu a préparé pour ceux dont il est aimé. Et c’est à nous que Dieu, par l’Esprit, en a fait la révélation. Car l’Esprit scrute le fond de toutes choses, même les profondeurs de Dieu.

Méditation
Chers fidèles du Christ, la suite de notre Seigneur est une question de choix et non d’obligation. Le Christ se propose à chaque homme afin qu’il le suive s’il le veut. Pour cette raison, il n’a pas besoin que le Chrétien fasse du prosélytisme. En tant que source de tout bien, chacun de ceux qui le désire doit pouvoir le découvrir à travers la sagesse qu’il donne pour ainsi parvenir librement à l’expression d’une foi vécue et assumée. Comme tel, l’on sera porté à pratiquer le bien sans se sentir obliger.

Therefore, whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do so will be called least in the kingdom of heaven. Do not swear by your head, for you cannot make a single hair white or black. Let your ‘Yes’ mean ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No’ mean ‘No.’ Anything more is from the evil one.”

Meditation
“Blessed are they who follow the Law of the Lord.” Psalm 118(119) underlines the importance of loving the commandments of God and keeping them. Sirach, in the First Reading, points out an important element in our understanding of the Law of God; it has to be obeyed out of choice rather than a sense of obligation. God has given us the choice between good and evil; he wants us to choose to obey him and not follow him because we feel forced to do so. It is only when we follow God out of conviction that our righteousness can surpass that of the scribes and Pharisees, as Jesus demands. The scribes and Pharisees saw the Law of God as a set of rules that were imposed on people; Jesus invites us to see God’s commandments rather as instruments meant to purify our hearts and make us love another. For instance, it is not enough to abstain from killing; I have to keep my heart off anger and envy so that I don’t hate my neighbour. When we understand the spirit of God’s Law, we learn to obey it out of conviction and not in order to conform to social or religious norms.

SAINT CYRILLE, MOINE, SAINT METHODE, EVEQUE

Natifs de Thessalonique, Méthode, un ancien fonctionnaire impérial, et son jeune frère Constantin, le futur Cyrille, s’étaient faits moines avant d’être envoyés par Byzance auprès des peuples slaves. Pour ceux-ci, ils traduisirent en slavon la Bible et les livres liturgiques, et inventèrent à cet effet l’alphabet dit “cyrillique”, encore en usage aujourd’hui. Ils se heurtèrent à l’opposition de missionnaires de rite latin qui les dénoncèrent au pape à cause de leur emploi de la langue vivante.

Fêtons les amis de Dieu, saint Cyrille et saint Méthode : la gloire des deux frères fut de proclamer la vérité reçue du Seigneur.
Prière d’ouverture
Dieu qui as conduit les peuples slaves à la lumière, grâce aux deux frères saints Cyrille et Méthode, ouvre nos cœurs à l’intelligence de ta Parole : fais de nous un peuple de croyants uni dans la vraie foi et dans un témoignage authentique. Par Jésus Christ.
1ère lecture : 1 R 12, 26-32 ; 13, 33-34
En ces jours-là, devenu roi des dix tribus d’Israël, Jéroboam se dit: « Maintenant, le royaume risque fort de se rallier de nouveau à la maison de David. Si le peuple continue de monter à Jérusalem pour offrir des sacrifices dans la maison du Seigneur, le cœur de ce peuple reviendra vers son souverain, Roboam, roi de Juda, et l’on me tuera. » Après avoir tenu conseil, Jéroboam fit fabriquer deux veaux en or, et il déclara au peuple: « Voilà trop longtemps que vous montez à Jérusalem! Israël, voici tes dieux, qui t’ont fait monter du pays d’Égypte.» Il plaça l’un des deux veaux à Béthel, l’autre à Dane, et ce fut un grand péché. Le peuple conduisit en procession celui qui allait à Dane. Jéroboam y établit un temple à la manière des lieux sacrés. Il institua des prêtres pris n’importe où, et qui n’étaient pas des descendants de Lévi. Jéroboam célébra la fête le quinzième jour du huitième mois, fête pareille à celle que l’on célébrait en Juda, et il monta à l’autel. Il fit de même à Béthel en offrant des sacrifices aux veaux qu’il avait fabriqués; il établit à Béthel les prêtres des lieux sacrés qu’il avait institués. Jéroboam persévéra dans sa mauvaise conduite; il continua d’instituer n’importe qui comme prêtres des lieux sacrés: il donnait l’investiture à tous ceux qui le désiraient, pour en faire des prêtres des lieux sacrés. Tout cela fit tomber dans le péché la maison de Jéroboam, entraîna sa ruine et provoqua sa disparition de la surface de la terre.
Psaume : 105 (106), 6-7ab, 19-20, 21-22
R/ Souviens-toi de nous, Seigneur, dans ta bienveillance pour ton peuple.
- Avec nos pères, nous avons péché, nous avons failli et renié. En Égypte, nos pères ont méconnu tes miracles, oublié l’abondance de tes grâces.
- À l’Horeb ils fabriquent un veau, ils adorent un objet en métal: ils échangeaient ce qui était leur gloire pour l’image d’un taureau, d’un ruminant.
- Ils oublient le Dieu qui les sauve, qui a fait des prodiges en Égypte, des miracles au pays de Cham, des actions terrifiantes sur la mer Rouge.
Acclamation
Alléluia. Alléluia. L’homme ne vit pas seulement de pain, mais de toute parole qui sort de la bouche de Dieu. Alléluia. (Mt 4, 4b)
Évangile : Mc 8, 1-10
En ces jours-là, comme il y avait de nouveau une grande foule, et que les gens n’avaient rien à manger, Jésus appelle à lui ses disciples et leur dit: « J’ai de la compassion pour cette foule, car depuis trois jours déjà ils restent auprès de moi, et n’ont rien à manger. Si je les renvoie chez eux à jeun, ils vont défaillir en chemin, et certains d’entre eux sont venus de loin. » Ses disciples lui répondirent : « Où donc pourra-t-on trouver du pain pour les rassasier ici, dans le désert ? » Il leur demanda: « Combien de pains avez-vous ? » Ils lui dirent: « Sept. » Alors il ordonna à la foule de s’asseoir par terre. Puis, prenant les sept pains et rendant grâce, il les rompit, et il les donnait à ses disciples pour que ceux-ci les distribuent ; et ils les distribuèrent à la foule. Ils avaient aussi quelques petits poissons, que Jésus bénit et fit aussi distribuer. Les gens mangèrent et furent rassasiés. On ramassa les morceaux qui restaient : cela faisait sept corbeilles. Or, ils étaient environ quatre mille. Puis Jésus les renvoya. Aussitôt, montant dans la barque avec ses disciples, il alla dans la région de Dalmanoutha.
Prière sur les offrandes
Seigneur notre Dieu, tu as voulu choisir dans ta création le pain et le vin qui refont chaque jour nos forces: Fais qu’ils deviennent aussi pour nous le sacrement de la vie éternelle. Par Jésus.
Antienne de la communion : Ps 106, 8-9
Proclamons l’amour du Seigneur, ses merveilles pour les hommes: Il a rassasié ceux qui avaient faim, et désaltéré ceux qui avaient soif.
Prière après la communion
Tu as voulu, Seigneur, que nous partagions un même pain et que nous buvions à la même coupe: Accorde-nous de vivre tellement unis dans le Christ que nous portions du fruit pour le salut du monde. Par Jésus.
Méditation
L’idolatrie ne consiste pas seulement à se prosterner devant les statuts ou des divinités imaginaires tel que le démontre la première lecture. Nous sommes idolâtre chaque fois que nous faisons passer une passion avant Dieu (Football, série télévisé…). Il en est de même lorsque nous nous replions sur nos difficultés. Le Christ en ce jour, à travers le miracle de la multiplication des pains voudrait nous faire comprendre que rien ne lui est impossible.
