Psalter: Week II

This feast has been celebrated in Rome since at least the fourth century. It signifies the unity of the Church founded upon the Apostles.
Entrance Antiphon : Lk 22: 32
The Lord says to Simon Peter: I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail, and, once you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.
Collect
Grant, we pray, almighty God, that no tempests may disturb us, for you have set us fast on the rock of the Apostle Peter’s confession of faith. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
First reading : 1 Peter 5:1-4
Now I have something to tell your elders: I am an elder myself, and a witness to the sufferings of Christ, and with you I have a share in the glory that is to be revealed. Be the shepherds of the flock of God that is entrusted to you: watch over it, not simply as a duty but gladly, because God wants it; not for sordid money, but because you are eager to do it. Never be a dictator over any group that is put in your charge, but be an example that the whole flock can follow. When the chief shepherd appears, you will be given the crown of unfading glory.

R/ The Lord is my shepherd: there is nothing I shall want.

Gospel : Matthew 16:13-19
When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi he put this question to his disciples, ‘Who do people say the Son of Man is?’ And they said, ‘Some say he is John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.’ ‘But you,’ he said ‘who do you say I am?’ Then Simon Peter spoke up, ‘You are the Christ,’ he said ‘the Son of the living God.’ Jesus replied, ‘Simon son of Jonah, you are a happy man! Because it was not flesh and blood that revealed this to you but my Father in heaven. So I now say to you: You are Peter and on this rock I will build my Church. And the gates of the underworld can never hold out against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven: whatever you bind on earth shall be considered bound in heaven; whatever you loose on earth shall be considered loosed in heaven.’
Prayer over the Offerings
Accept with favour, O Lord, we pray, the prayers and offerings of your Church, that, with Saint Peter as her shepherd, she may come to an eternal inheritance, for it is through his teaching that she holds the faith in its integrity. Through Christ our Lord.
Communion Antiphon : Cf. Mt 16: 16, 18
Peter said to Jesus: You are the Christ, the Son of the living God. And Jesus replied: You are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church.
Prayer after Communion
O God, who at our celebration of the feast day of the blessed Apostle Peter have nourished us by communion in the Body and Blood of Christ, grant, we pray, that this redeeming exchange may be for us a Sacrament of unity and peace. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
The authority Jesus bestows on Peter today is both absolute and eternal. The power to bind or loose on earth is profoundly powerful since it is recognised and ratified in heaven. This power is eternal and shall not be limited by the gates of the underworld. It is an enduring power that ensures that the Church, built upon Peter, shall always prevail against any opposition. However, Jesus does not give Peter eternal life on earth. This eternal power is not Peter’s personal possession. It is meant to be handed down from one generation to the next, ensuring that Peter’s successors, the Popes and Bishops, will continue tolead the Church with the same authority and service. The essence of this authority and service is clearly stated in the first reading where Peter himself says: “Be the shepherds of the flock of God that is entrusted to you: watch over it… Never be a dictator over any group that is put in your charge, but be an example that the whole flock can follow.” In various capacities of leadership and responsibility over groups of people, it is crucial to remember that the true Shepherd, the ultimate leader, is Christ Jesus. Leaders are called upon to emulate His example, combining authority with humility, and service with selflessness.

Saint Peter Damian (1007 – 1072)

Green
Born in Ravenna, he joined the hermitage of Fonte Avellana. He strongly promoted the religious life in many parts of Italy and the Popes in their efforts at reform. He died on 21 February 1072.

First reading: Genesis 11:1-9
Throughout the earth men spoke the same language, with the same vocabulary. Now as they moved eastwards they found a plain in the land of Shinar where they settled. They said to one another, ‘Come, let us make bricks and bake them in the fire.’ (For stone they used bricks, and for mortar they used bitumen). ‘Come,’ they said ‘let us build ourselves a town and a tower with its top reaching heaven. Let us make a name for ourselves, so that we may not be scattered about the whole earth.’ Now the Lord came down to see the town and the tower that the sons of man had built. ‘So they are all a single people with a single language!’ said the Lord. ‘This is but the start of their undertakings! There will be nothing too hard for them to do. Come, let us go down and confuse their language on the spot so that they can no longer understand one another.’ The Lord scattered them thence over the whole face of the earth, and they stopped building the town. For anyone who wants to save his life will lose it; but anyone who loses his life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it. What gain, then, is it for a man to win the whole world and ruin his life? And indeed what can a man offer in exchange for his life? For if anyone in this adulterous and sinful generation is ashamed of me and of my words, the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.’ And he said to them, ‘I tell you solemnly, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God come with power.’

Having fed upon these heavenly delights, we pray, O Lord, so that we may always long for that food by which we truly live. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
Living as a Christian in today’s world can indeed be a challenging experience. Not only are there temptations from every side, but the challenges seem to become more demanding by the day. Criticism, rejection, mockery, non-appreciation, and lack of appreciation or recognition of our sacrifices are common facets of this struggle. On some difficult days, the idea of quitting may loom large. However, the Christian path, as Jesus teaches us, involves carrying our daily crosses and following him. These are the burdens that come with everyday life, especially those that arise as a result of our faith. The notion that winners never quit resonates well with our Christian calling to persevere in the face of adversity. It is better to stand alone for the truth and God than to team up with proud and negatively ambitious people. Rather than engaging in the building of a tower of Babel that only leads to confusion, the call is to seek lasting security in the cross of Christ, which leads to life eternal. Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth.

Saint pierre damien, Eveque et docteur de l’Eglise

Pierre Damien est un saint austère, extrêmement exigeant pour lui-même et pour les autres. Né à Ravenne en 1007, il fut élevé par son frère Damien, dont il prit le nom. A vingt-huit ans, il entra à l’ermitage de Fonte Avellana. Il renonça à tout, sauf à l’art de bien écrire. Ses talents de pamphlétaire lui furent utiles pour animer la réforme du clergé, des monastères et des laïcs. Dans les diverses missions que lui confia le pape, ce moine montra la vigueur intransigeante d’un prophète.

Seigneur, sois le rocher qui m’abrite, la maison bien défendue qui me sauve. Pour l’honneur de ton nom guide-moi, conduis-moi.

1ère lecture : Gn 11, 1-9
Toute la terre avait alors la même langue et les mêmes mots. Au cours de leurs déplacements du côté de l’orient, les hommes découvrirent une plaine en Mésopotamie, et s’y établirent. Ils se dirent l’un à l’autre : « Allons ! fabriquons des briques et mettons-les à cuire ! » Les briques leur servaient de pierres, et le bitume, de mortier. Ils dirent : « Allons ! bâtissons-nous une ville, avec une tour dont le sommet soit dans les cieux. Faisons-nous un nom, pour ne pas être disséminés sur toute la surface de la terre. » Le Seigneur descendit pour voir la ville et la tour que les hommes avaient bâties. Et le Seigneur dit : « Ils sont un seul peuple, ils ont tous la même langue : s’ils commencent ainsi, rien ne les empêchera désormais de faire tout ce qu’ils décideront. Allons! descendons, et là, embrouillons leur langue : qu’ils ne se comprennent plus les uns les autres. » De là, le Seigneur les dispersa sur toute la surface de la terre. Ils cessèrent donc de bâtir la ville. C’est pourquoi on l’appela Babel, car c’est là que le Seigneur embrouilla la langue des habitants de toute la terre ; et c’est de là qu’il les dispersa sur toute la surface de la terre.

R/ Heureux le peuple que le Seigneur s’est choisi pour domaine.
Le Seigneur a déjoué les plans des nations, anéanti les projets des peuples. Le plan du Seigneur demeure pour toujours, les projets de son cœur subsistent d’âge en âge.
Heureux le peuple dont le Seigneur est le Dieu, heureuse la nation qu’il s’est choisie pour domaine ! Du haut des cieux, le Seigneur regarde : il voit la race des hommes.
Du lieu qu’il habite, il observe tous les habitants de la terre, lui qui forme le cœur de chacun, qui pénètre toutes leurs actions.

Évangile : Mc 8, 34-9, 1
En ce temps-là, appelant la foule avec ses disciples, Jésus leur dit : « Si quelqu’un veut marcher à ma suite, qu’il renonce à lui-même, qu’il prenne sa croix et qu’il me suive. Car celui qui veut sauver sa vie la perdra ; mais celui qui perdra sa vie à cause de moi et de l’Évangile la sauvera. Quel avantage, en effet, un homme a-t-il à gagner le monde entier si c’est au prix de sa vie ? Que pourrait-il donner en échange de sa vie ? Méditation
Marcher à la suite de Jésus c’est être son disciple. Il nous rappelle que le signe qui montre que nous sommes des chrétiens c’est la croix que nous acceptons de porter au quotidien car c’est par elle que nous avons été sauvés. La vie chrétienne n’appartient pas aux hommes qui fuient la souffrance ou qui faiblissent devant les contrariétés inhérentes à la vie humaine. Le Christ nous enseigne que nos souffrances nos douleurs doivent être interprétées dans une perspective rédemptrice car c’est en prenant sur lui nos douleurs que lui le Christ à apporter la victoire au monde sur le bois de la croix. Nous prions ainsi pour tous ceux qui connaissent la souffrance et la maladie pour que jamais leur foi ne défaille.

And he began to teach them that the Son of Man was destined to suffer grievously, to be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and to be put to death, and after three days to rise again; and he said all this quite openly. Meditation
The authority that God bestowed on man over all of creation from the very beginning of the world, is reaffirmed in the restoration of the universe after the great flood. God instructs Noah and his sons to “… teem over the earth and be lord of it.” However, He also reminds us that we are each other’s keeper. In contrast to Cain’s denial of his role as his brother’s guardian, God stresses, “I will demand an account of every man’s life from his fellow men.” The power to govern over the riches of the earth is intricately linked with the responsibility to care for every single human life. The law to refrain from shedding blood is rooted in this responsibility and later formalised in the Decalogue’s unequivocal Thou shall not kill. Despite this clear moral imperative, why then do nations, where Christianity thrives, still rise against each other in war and bloodshed? This raises the poignant question of what relationship we have with Christ. Do we even know Him? Today, let us pray that humanity as a whole may see in Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection, the greatest act of our reconciliation with God, and become His true witnesses.

R/ Du ciel, le Seigneur regarde la terre.
Les nations craindront le nom du Seigneur, et tous les rois de la terre, sa gloire : quand le Seigneur rebâtira Sion, quand il apparaîtra dans sa gloire, il se tournera vers la prière du spolié, il n’aura pas méprisé sa prière.
Que cela soit écrit pour l’âge à venir, et le peuple à nouveau créé chantera son Dieu : « Des hauteurs, son sanctuaire, le Seigneur s’est penché; du ciel, il regarde la terre pour entendre la plainte des captifs et libérer ceux qui devaient mourir. »
On publiera dans Sion le nom du Seigneur et sa louange dans tout Jérusalem, au rassemblement des royaumes et des peuples qui viendront servir le Seigneur. Les fils de tes serviteurs trouveront un séjour, et devant toi se maintiendra leur descendance.

Évangile : Mc 8, 27-33
En ce temps-là, Jésus s’en alla, ainsi que ses disciples, vers les villages situés aux environs de Césarée-de-Philippe. Chemin faisant, il interrogeait ses disciples : « Au dire des gens, qui suis-je ?» Ils lui répondirent : « Jean le Baptiste; pour d’autres, Élie; pour d’autres, un des prophètes. » Et lui les interrogeait: « Et vous, que dites-vous ? Pour vous, qui suis-je ? » Pierre, prenant la parole, lui dit : « Tu es le Christ. » Alors, il leur défendit vivement de parler de lui à personne. Il commença à leur enseigner qu’il fallait que le Fils de l’homme souffre beaucoup, qu’il soit rejeté par les anciens, les grands prêtres et les scribes, qu’il soit tué, et que, trois jours après, il ressuscite. Jésus disait cette parole ouvertement. Pierre, le prenant à part, se mit à lui faire de vifs reproches. Mais Jésus se retourna et, voyant ses disciples, il interpella vivement Pierre : « Passe derrière moi, Satan ! Tes pensées ne sont pas celles de Dieu, mais celles des hommes.

Méditation
Il est bénéfique de faire sois même l’expérience de Dieu que de laisser les autres nous en faire écho. La pédagogie de Jésus dans l’Evangile de ce jour le démontre à suffisance. Il y a d’une part ce que les autres pensent et disent de lui et ce que toi personnellement dis de lui. La détermination de l’identité de Jésus est en réalité la maturité de la foi chez le croyant car seul quand nous pouvons dire qui est le Christ pour nous alors commence notre profession de foi véritablement. Alors qui est Jésus pour toi ?

Alvarez entered the Dominican convent at Cordova in 1368. He became known for his preaching prowess in Spain and Italy. By the time of his death, he was famous all over Spain for his teaching, preaching, asceticism, and holiness. His cult was confirmed in 1741.

Meditation A common thread running through both the Gospel and the first reading is the progressive unfolding and fulfilment of God’s will in our lives. Just as Jesus meticulously healed the blind man step by step, Noah, after the great flood, carefully observed and understood the natural order around him. In our own trials, we are often tempted to hastily seek immediate solutions, disregarding the virtue of patience. While the desire to set things right, eliminate evil, or alleviate pain is natural, it is crucial not to succumb to making hasty decisions. The saying “more haste, less speed” captures the wisdom of exercising patience in our actions. Proper discernment allows us to be confident that our choices are in harmony with God’s will.

Méditation
« J’aperçois les gens : ils ressemblent à des arbres que je vois marcher ». Voici l’illusion que développe le regard d’un homme malade. Il a fallu que Jésus lui imposa les mains et il s’en trouva guéri. Nous sommes malades à chaque fois que notre regard manque de justesse sur l’image que nous avons de nos frères. Une image qui tant à dégrader leur image et à leur nier l’égale dignité qui relève de la nature humaine. Quel regard posons-nous sur les hommes qui nous ont fait du tort ? sommes-nous prêts à convertir ce regard pour les considérer non pas comme des arbres mais comme des hommes faits à l’image et à la ressemblance de Dieu lui-même ?

Meditation
The disciples’ confusion in response to Jesus’ warning is understandable, given the circumstances surrounding it. The absence of bread, coupled with Jesus mentioning yeast, naturally led them to think about bread. Similarly, in our daily efforts to lead a perfect Christian life, it is not uncommon to encounter confusion, grappling with genuine questions and fears regarding the right practices to observe. But, far from being the yeast we use to bake bread, Jesus was warning against the pride and self-sufficiency that characterised the lives of the Pharisees and Herod. These figures wielded religious and political authority over others. Their positions made them seemingly invincible in the eyes of the “common folk”. In the same way, Jesus warns us against falling into the traps of our own intelligence and reliance on personal comforts. The message is clear: we cannot always be right, or can we possess all knowledge, or have everything we desire. We need God’s grace and light always!

Pauvre et torturée par l’asthme, Bernadette (1844-1879) a quatorze ans quand, dans la grotte de Massabielle, à Lourdes, lui apparaît dix-huit fois celle qui se nommera : ‘’l’Immaculée Conception’’. ‘’ Si la sainte Vierge en avait trouvé une plus ignorante que moi, c’est elle qu’elle aurait choisi’’, dira Bernadette, devenue Sœur Marie Bernard en 1866 chez les Sœurs de la Charité de Nevers.

Vous avez des yeux et vous ne voyez pas, vous avez des oreilles et vous n’entendez pas ! Vous ne vous rappelez pas ? Quand j’ai rompu les cinq pains pour cinq mille personnes, combien avez-vous ramassé de paniers pleins de morceaux ? » Ils lui répondirent : « Douze. – Et quand j’en ai rompu sept pour quatre mille, combien avez-vous rempli de corbeilles en ramassant les morceaux ? » Ils lui répondirent: « Sept. » Il leur disait : « Vous ne comprenez pas encore ? »

Méditation
L’attachement aux plaisirs du monde obnubile les yeux des apôtres qui ne sont plus disposés à voir ce qui est l’essentiel de leur vie. Cet essentiel est portant la mais leur sens aiguisé au plaisirs restent fermés. Ils ont avec eux dans la barque le pain qui nourrit leur corps et ce pain est insuffisant il ne pourra suffire à tous. Mais ils ont également avec eux dans la barque le pain de vie Jésus Christ ; cela n’empêche pas que leur attention soit focalisée sur le pain éphémère. Jésus les blâme, il leur rappelle les signes qu’il a accompli pour susciter en eux la foi. Cette foi devrait les aider à agir différemment mais surtout à rester concentrer sur ce qui est essentiel. Il faut se poser cette question. Ce pourquoi vous vous battez contre les hommes vous conduit il vers la vie éternelle ?

Vers 1233, sept marchands florentins renoncent à leur commerce et à leurs gains pour mener une autre recherche dans la solitude du Mont Senario. Ils vivent en communauté dans la pénitence et méditent la passion de Jésus et les douleurs de sa mère. Ainsi prend naissance l’ordre des « servites » ou « serviteurs de Marie », voué à la prédication et à l’enseignement.

Ceux dont le coeur est à Dieu chantent: « Tu es, Seigneur, mon héritage et ma part à la coupe; la part que j’ai reçue est la plus belle ».

Mets en nous Seigneur, cette piété qui portait les Fondateurs des Servites à aimer tendrement la mère de ton Fils et à faire avancer ton peuple vers toi. Par Jésus.
1ère lecture : Gn 4, 1-15.25
L’homme s’unit à Ève, sa femme : elle devint enceinte, et elle mit au monde Caïn. Elle dit alors : « J’ai acquis un homme avec l’aide du Seigneur ! » Dans la suite, elle mit au monde Abel, frère de Caïn. Abel devint berger, et Caïn cultivait la terre. Au temps fixé, Caïn présenta des produits de la terre en offrande au Seigneur. De son côté, Abel présenta les premiers-nés de son troupeau, en offrant les morceaux les meilleurs. Le Seigneur tourna son regard vers Abel et son offrande, mais vers Caïn et son offrande, il ne le tourna pas. Caïn en fut très irrité et montra un visage abattu. Le Seigneur dit à Caïn : « Pourquoi es-tu irrité, pourquoi ce visage abattu ? Si tu agis bien, ne relèveras-tu pas ton visage ? Mais si tu n’agis pas bien…, le péché est accroupi à ta porte. Il est à l’affût, mais tu dois le dominer. » Caïn dit à son frère Abel: « Sortons dans les champs. » Et, quand ils furent dans la campagne, Caïn se jeta sur son frère Abel et le tua. Le Seigneur dit à Caïn : « Où est ton frère Abel ? » Caïn répondit : « Je ne sais pas. Est-ce que je suis, moi, le gardien de mon frère ? » Le Seigneur reprit : « Qu’as-tu fait ? La voix du sang de ton frère crie de la terre vers moi Maintenant donc, sois maudit et chassé loin de cette terre qui a ouvert la bouche pour boire le sang de ton frère, versé par ta main. Tu auras beau cultiver la terre, elle ne produira plus rien pour toi. Tu seras un errant, un vagabond sur la terre.» Alors Caïn dit au Seigneur : « Mon châtiment est trop lourd à porter ! Voici qu’aujourd’hui tu m’as chassé de cette terre. Je dois me cacher loin de toi, je serai un errant, un vagabond sur la terre, et le premier venu qui me trouvera me tuera. » Le Seigneur lui répondit: « Si quelqu’un tue Caïn, Caïn sera vengé sept fois.» Et le Seigneur mit un signe sur Caïn pour le préserver d’être tué par le premier venu qui le trouverait. Adam s’unit encore à sa femme, et elle mit au monde un fils. Elle lui donna le nom de Seth (ce qui veut dire : accordé), car elle dit : « Dieu m’a accordé une nouvelle descendance à la place d’Abel, tué par Caïn. »

En ce temps-là, les pharisiens survinrent et se mirent à discuter avec Jésus ; pour le mettre à l’épreuve, ils cherchaient à obtenir de lui un signe venant du ciel. Jésus soupira au plus profond de lui-même et dit : « Pourquoi cette génération cherche-t-elle un signe ? Amen, je vous le déclare : aucun signe ne sera donné à cette génération. » Puis il les quitta, remonta en barque, et il partit vers l’autre rive.

Déjà fortifiés par cette communion, nous te supplions encore, Seigneur notre Dieu : puissions-nous, à l’exemple des saint Fondateurs des Servites, ne jamais rechercher que toi et vivre dans ce monde en homme nouveaux. Par Jésus.
Méditation
Les pharisiens ont l’opportunité de parler à Jésus. Ils ne sont pas motivés par la foi mais ils nourrissent leur dialogue d’une volonté malsaine ? Ils le mettent à l’épreuve, ce qu’ils recherchent c’est un signe de Jésus et non pas Jésus lui-même. Ils veulent bénéficier de la grâce de Dieu sans être avec Dieu mieux encore ils sollicitent les signes de Dieu sans la foi en Dieu. De nos jours nous confondons la recherche des solutions à nos problèmes de santé à la foi en Dieu. Lorsque notre objectif n’est pas atteint il est une option, se désolidariser de l’Eglise et s’adonner à des rites traditionnels et au spiritisme. Puisse le Seigneur nous donner de chercher et aimer le Christ en vérité.
