1ère lecture : Ne 8, 2-4a.5-6.8-10
En ces jours-là, le prêtre Esdras apporta le livre de la Loi en présence de l’assemblée, composée des hommes, des femmes, et de tous les enfants en âge de comprendre. C’était le premier jour du septième mois. Esdras, tourné vers la place de la porte des Eaux, fit la lecture dans le livre, depuis le lever du jour jusqu’à midi, en présence des hommes, des femmes, et de tous les enfants en âge de comprendre : tout le peuple écoutait la lecture de la Loi. Le scribe Esdras se tenait sur une tribune de bois, construite tout exprès. Esdras ouvrit le livre ; tout le peuple le voyait, car il dominait l’assemblée. Quand il ouvrit le livre, tout le monde se mit debout. Alors Esdras bénit le Seigneur, le Dieu très grand, et tout le peuple, levant les mains, répondit : « Amen ! Amen ! » Puis ils s’inclinèrent et se prosternèrent devant le Seigneur, le visage contre terre. Esdras lisait un passage dans le livre de la loi de Dieu, puis les Lévites traduisaient, donnaient le sens, et l’on pouvait comprendre. Néhémie le gouverneur, Esdras qui était prêtre et scribe, et les Lévites qui donnaient les explications, dirent à tout le peuple : « Ce jour est consacré au Seigneur votre Dieu ! Ne prenez pas le deuil, ne pleurez pas ! » Car ils pleuraient tous en entendant les paroles de la Loi. Esdras leur dit encore : « Allez, mangez des viandes savoureuses, buvez des boissons aromatisées, et envoyez une part à celui qui n’a rien de prêt. Car ce jour est consacré à notre Dieu ! Ne vous affligez pas : la joie du Seigneur est votre rempart ! »

La loi du Seigneur est parfaite, qui redonne vie ; la charte du Seigneur est sûre, qui rend sages les simples.

La crainte qu’il inspire est pure, elle est là pour toujours ; les décisions du Seigneur sont justes et vraiment équitables.
Accueille les paroles de ma bouche, le murmure de mon cœur ; qu’ils parviennent devant toi, Seigneur, mon rocher, mon défenseur !
2ème lecture : 1 Co 12, 12-30
Frères, prenons une comparaison : notre corps ne fait qu’un, il a pourtant plusieurs membres ; et tous les membres, malgré leur nombre, ne forment qu’un seul corps. Il en est ainsi pour le Christ. C’est dans un unique Esprit, en effet, que nous tous, Juifs ou païens, esclaves ou hommes libres, nous avons été baptisés pour former un seul corps. Tous, nous avons été désaltérés par un unique Esprit. Le corps humain se compose non pas d’un seul, mais de plusieurs membres. Or, vous êtes corps du Christ et, chacun pour votre part, vous êtes membres de ce corps.

Évangile : Lc 1, 1-4 ; 4, 14-21
Beaucoup ont entrepris de composer un récit des événements qui se sont accomplis parmi nous, d’après ce que nous ont transmis ceux qui, dès le commencement, furent témoins oculaires et serviteurs de la Parole. C’est pourquoi j’ai décidé, moi aussi, après avoir recueilli avec précision des informations concernant tout ce qui s’est passé depuis le début, d’écrire pour toi, excellent Théophile, un exposé suivi, afin que tu te rendes bien compte de la solidité des enseignements que tu as entendus. En ce temps-là, lorsque Jésus, dans la puissance de l’Esprit, revint en Galilée, sa renommée se répandit dans toute la région. Il enseignait dans les synagogues, et tout le monde faisait son éloge. Il vint à Nazareth, où il avait été élevé. Selon son habitude, il entra dans la synagogue le jour du sabbat, et il se leva pour faire la lecture. On lui remit le livre du prophète Isaïe. Il ouvrit le livre et trouva le passage où il est écrit : L’Esprit du Seigneur est sur moi parce que le Seigneur m’a consacré par l’onction. Il m’a envoyé porter la Bonne Nouvelle aux pauvres, annoncer aux captifs leur libération, et aux aveugles qu’ils retrouveront la vue, remettre en liberté les opprimés, annoncer une année favorable accordée par le Seigneur. Jésus referma le livre, le rendit au servant et s’assit. Tous, dans la synagogue, avaient les yeux fixés sur lui. Alors il se mit à leur dire : « Aujourd’hui s’accomplit ce passage de l’Écriture que vous venez d’entendre »

Dans ta bonté, Seigneur, accepte notre offrande: Qu’elle soit sanctifiée et serve ainsi à notre salut. Par Jésus.

Permets, nous t’en prions, Dieu tout-puissant, Qu’ayant reçu de toi la grâce d’une nouvelle vie, nous puissions nous en émerveiller toujours. Par Jésus.
Méditation Le peuple d’Israël pleurait en entendant les paroles de la Loi. Pourquoi ? Les pleurs sont une émotion qui peut traduire soit la tristesse soit le remords, soit alors la joie. Nous pouvons donc considérer ici cette double raison. Si le peuple pleure de remords, c’est que la Parole de Dieu l’a éclairé sur le péché et ses conséquences, suite au mépris de la Loi de Dieu dont il s’est détourné. S’il pleure de joie, c’est qu’il saisit toute la grâce qu’il y a à retrouver les délices contenues dans la Loi et se réjouit d’être toujours aimé de Dieu. En effet, la vie et la bénédiction sont dans la Parole de Dieu. Cela ne semble pas être la conviction de notre monde contemporain qui, lui, affiche une indifférence vis-à-vis de Dieu. Pourtant, l’aujourd’hui de la Parole de Dieu en Jésus fait de nous ses contemporains et donc des bénéficiaires de sa grâce. Si nous ne faisons pas rayonner Dieu et sommes toujours habillés de tristesse, comment les incrédules croiront-ils ?

Paul est né à Tarse, en Cilicie, province romaine du Sud-Est de l’Asie Mineure (Turquie actuelle), entre 7 et 10 (environ l’an 8). Il était un Juif de la diaspora. Il parlait grec et était citoyen romain. Entre 12 et 13 ans, il quitte Tarse pour s’installer à Jérusalem pour y recevoir l’enseignement du rabbin Gamaliel l’Ancien. Paul était un Pharisien accompli, marqué par une profonde orthodoxie.

Prière d’ouverture
Dieu qui a instruit le monde entier par la parole de l ’Apôtre Saint Paul dont nous célébrons aujourd’hui la conversion, accordes-nous d ’aller vers toi en cherchant à lui ressembler, et d ’être, dans le monde, les témoins de ton Évangile. Par Jésus.
1ère lecture : Ac9,1-22
Saul était toujours animé d’une rage meurtrière contre les disciples du Seigneur. Il alla trouver le grand prêtre et lui demanda des lettres pour les synagogues de Damas, afin que, s’il trouvait des hommes et des femmes qui suivaient le Chemin du Seigneur, il les amène enchaînés à Jérusalem Comme il était en route et approchait de Damas, soudain une lumière venant du ciel l’enveloppa de sa clarté. Il fut précipité à terre; il entendit une voix qui lui disait : «Saul, Saul, pourquoi me persécuter ? » Il demanda : « Qui es-tu, Seigneur ?» La voix répondit : « Je suis Jésus, celui que tu persécutes. Relève-toi et entre dans la ville : on te dira ce que tu dois faire. » Ses compagnons de route s’étaient arrêtés, muets de stupeur : ils entendaient la voix, mais ils ne voyaient personne. Saul se releva de terre et, bien qu’il eût les yeux ouverts, il ne voyait rien. Ils le prirent par la main pour le faire entrer à Damas. Pendant trois jours, il fut privé de la vue et il resta sans manger ni boire. Or, il y avait à Damas un disciple nommé Ananie. Dans une vision, le Seigneur lui dit : « Ananie!» Il répondit : « Me voici, Seigneur. » Le Seigneur reprit : « Lève-tôt, va dans la rue appelée rue Droite, chez Jude: tu demanderas un homme de Tarse nommé Saul. Il est en prière, et il a eu cette vision : un homme, du nom d’Ananie, entrait et lui imposait les mains pour lui rendre la vue. » Ananie répondit : « Seigneur, j’ai beaucoup entendu parler de cet homme, et de tout le mal qu’il a fait subir à tes fidèles à Jérusalem. Il est ici, après avoir reçu de la part des grands prêtres le pouvoir d’enchaîner tous ceux qui invoquent ton nom. » Mais le Seigneur lui dit : «Va! Car cet homme est l’instrument que j’ai choisi pour faire parvenir mon nom auprès des nations, des rois et des fils d’Israël. Et moi, je lui montrerai tout ce qu’il lui faudra souffrir pour mon nom.» Ananie partit donc et entra dans la maison. Il imposa les mains à Saul, en disant : « Saul, mon frère, celui qui m’a envoyé, c’est le Seigneur, c’est Jésus qui t’est apparu sur le chemin par lequel tu venais. Ainsi, tu vas retrouver la vue, et tu seras rempli d’Esprit Saint.» Aussitôt tombèrent de ses yeux comme des écailles, et il retrouva la vue. Il se leva, puis il fut baptisé. Alors il prit de la nourriture et les forces lui revinrent. Il passa quelques jours à Damas avec les disciples et, sans plus attendre, il proclamait Jésus dans les synagogues, affirmant que celui-ci est le Fils de Dieu.

Que cette communion, Seigneur notre Dieu, entretienne en nous la charité qui brûlait au cœur de l’Apôtre Paul et lui donnait un souci pas.
Méditation
La chute de Paul sur le chemin de Damas est consécutive à son orgueil et à sa prétention de servir Dieu selon les projections fondamentalistes humaines. Elle est typique et symbolique de nos propres chutes. Cependant, la rencontre de Paul avec Jésus ressuscité a induit une transformation profonde de son être croyant ; elle l’a purifié des attitudes contraires à la volonté de Dieu. Paul comprend dès lors que seul l’amour dit, sert et témoigne de Dieu. Il a divorcé d’avec la vie ancienne, il est un homme nouveau. La connaissance de Jésus et sa rencontre quotidienne dans sa Parole et dans l’eucharistie devraient avoir le même effet radical en nous. Pourquoi n’arrivons-nous pas ? Interrogeons la qualité notre foi et de notre amour pour lui. L’évangile nous rassure pourtant : ceux qui croient sont vainqueurs et capables de faits inespérés.

Meditation
The conversion of Saint Paul is an event of great significance in the history of the Church. It marks God’s gift to the Church of one of her greatest missionaries. Paul’s steadfast dedication to the command Jesus gives the Church after his resurrection: «Go out to the whole world; proclaim the Good News to all creation,» sets him apart. He dutifully obeys this command and spreads the Gospel throughout the Eastern Mediterranean and Rome. Even today, through his letters, he continues to serve as a great evangelist. Exceptionally, he reminds us that the Church is missionary by her very essence. We must preach the Good News to make Jesus known wherever we find ourselves. In a remarkable transformation, Paul transitions from being a persecutor to a preacher. It is time we also embrace our own “Damascus Road.” This feast of the celebration of the Conversion of Saint Paul has transformed the term “Damascus Road” into a symbol of the path of conversion and transformation. This occasion is not just a commemoration of a singular moment of transformation but a powerful reminder of God’s boundless grace and the potential for radical change within us. The essence of the Church, as exemplified by Paul, is inherently missionary. It urges us to proclaim the Good News and make Jesus known wherever we find ourselves. Our transformation moves us to “Go out to the whole world; proclaim the Good News to all creation.”

First reading: Hebrews 8:6-13
We have seen that Christ has been given a ministry of a far higher order, and to the same degree it is a better covenant of which he is the mediator, founded on better promises. If that first covenant had been without a fault, there would have been no need for a second one to replace it. And in fact God does find fault with them; he says: See, the days are coming – it is the Lord who speaks – when I will establish a new covenant with the House of Israel and the House of Judah, but not a covenant like the one I made with their ancestors on the day I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt. They abandoned that covenant of mine, and so I on my side deserted them. It is the Lord who speaks. No, this is the covenant I will make with the House of Israel when those days arrive – it is the Lord who speaks. I will put my laws into their minds and write them on their hearts. Then I will be their God and they shall be my people. There will be no further need for neighbour to try to teach neighbour, or brother to say to brother, ‘Learn to know the Lord.’ No, they will all know me, the least no less than the greatest, since I will forgive their iniquities and never call their sins to mind. By speaking of a new covenant, he implies that the first one is already old. Now anything old only gets more antiquated until in the end it disappears.

Grant, we pray, almighty God, that through the Sacrament we have received, we may imitate on earth the charity and meekness of Saint Francis de Sales and so attain like him the glory of heaven. Through Christ our Lord. Everything Jesus did in life was filled with significance. This particular action displays great symbolic value.
Meditation
A mountain represents our spiritual journey towards God. It is a sign that urges us to ascend in His direction. It signifies the importance of rising toward God before being equipped to fulfill His will. It is only after ascending the mountain at Jesus’ invitation that the Apostles are given the authority to preach and cast out demons. When He summons His Apostles up a mountain, why did He wait to act in this way? The primary and most significant «mountain» we are called to climb is that of prayer. Each day, we are urged to ascend in prayer to meet our Lord, seeking Him through a life of complete surrender. Jesus invites us to come to Him so we can spend time alone with Him and experience His dazzling presence. Climbing this metaphorical mountain of prayer together is crucial for preparing ourselves to carry out the divine commission our Lord has entrusted to us. Without climbing this mountain of prayer together with our brothers and sisters, we will not be ready to extend His mercy and love to a world in need. Reflect on Jesus’s invitation to accompany Him on the prayer mountain today. Embrace this invitation so that you can be sent out to fulfil His sacred directive of love.

Il fonda, avec Sainte Jeanne de Chantal, l’Ordre de la Visitation. Directeur spirituel d’une douceur exigeante ; il rappela aux laïcs chrétiens qu’ils ont tous la vocation à la perfection évangélique.

1ère lecture : Hébreux 8, 6-13
Frères, le service qui revient à notre grand prêtre se distingue d’autant plus que lui est médiateur d’une alliance meilleure, reposant sur de meilleures promesses. En effet, si la première Alliance avait été irréprochable, il n’y aurait pas eu lieu d’en chercher une deuxième. Or, c’est bien un reproche que Dieu fait à son peuple quand il dit : Voici venir des jours, dit le Seigneur, où je conclurai avec la maison d’Israël et avec la maison de Juda une alliance nouvelle. Ce ne sera pas comme l’Alliance que j’ai faite avec leurs pères, le jour où je les ai pris par la main pour les faire sortir du pays d’Égypte : eux ne sont pas restés dans mon Alliance ; alors moi, je les ai délaissés, dit le Seigneur. Mais voici quelle sera l’Alliance que j’établirai avec la maison d’Israël quand ces jours-là seront passés, dit le Seigneur. Quand je leur donnerai mes lois, je les inscrirai dans leur pensée et sur leurs cœurs. Je serai leur Dieu, et ils seront mon peuple. De cette manière, notre monde sera inondé de sa justice. En effet, nous sommes des apôtres, ses envoyés, de ce temps pour tenir le devoir d’annonce et de témoignage de l’évangile qui fera reculer, le règne et la « justice » des démons dont la loi est plutôt oppressante.

Il n’a pas besoin, comme les autres grands prêtres, d’offrir chaque jour des sacrifices, d’abord pour ses péchés personnels, puis pour ceux du peuple ; cela, il l’a fait une fois pour toutes en s’offrant lui-même. La loi de Moïse établit comme grands prêtres des hommes remplis de faiblesse ; mais la parole du serment divin, qui vient après la Loi, établit comme grand prêtre le Fils, conduit pour l’éternité à sa perfection. Méditation
La grâce insigne que Jésus nous a apportée, c’est la capacité à être libres et forts face aux sollicitations du péché et aux tourments de la vie : il nous a rendu vainqueurs par sa présence en nous. C’est là une consonance de l’affirmation de la lettre aux Hébreux : « le pouvoir de Jésus est capable de nous sauver de manière définitive ». Cela ne se vérifie vraiment, nous dit le psalmiste, que lorsque nous sommes tout tendus sur l’accomplissement de la volonté de Dieu. Pour cela, il nous faut laisser Jésus entrer et prendre place dans la barque de nos vies, en tant que ses disciples. Il nous animera de sa puissance d’amour et nous, nous deviendrons le truchement de sa rencontre avec nos prochains pour leur apporter la même grâce. Soyons donc attentifs à la manière dont nous servirons Jésus à nos prochains à travers les rencontres de ce jour.

First reading: Hebrews 7:25-8:6
The power of Jesus to save is utterly certain, since he is living for ever to intercede for all who come to God through him. To suit us, the ideal high priest would have to be holy, innocent and uncontaminated, beyond the influence of sinners, and raised up above the heavens; one who would not need to offer sacrifices every day, as the other high priests do for their own sins and then for those of the people, because he has done this once and for all by offering himself. The Law appoints high priests who are men subject to weakness; but the promise on oath, which came after the Law, appointed the Son who is made perfect for ever. The great point of all that we have said is that we have a high priest of exactly this kind. He has his place at the right of the throne of divine Majesty in the heavens, and he is the minister of the sanctuary and of the true Tent of Meeting which the Lord, and not any man, set up. It is the duty of every high priest to offer gifts and sacrifices, and so this one too must have something to offer. In fact, if he were on earth, he would not be a priest at all, since there are others who make the offerings laid down by the Law and these only maintain the service of a model or a reflection of the heavenly realities. For Moses, when he had the Tent to build, was warned by God who said: See that you make everything according to the pattern shown you on the mountain. We have seen that he has been given a ministry of a far higher order, and to the same degree it is a better covenant of which he is the mediator, founded on better promises.

Meditation
In today’s Gospel reading, people gather from all corners to see Jesus. In this vast and diverse gathering, the common thread among them is their affliction – each one of them is grappling with one form of illness or another. The Gospel states that «all who were afflicted in any way were crowding forward to touch Him.» Prior to this moment, Jesus has already identified Himself in Mark’s gospel as the one who would come to heal the spiritually and physically broken. In our sorrow, the Gospel encourages us to consistently turn to the Lord. In this reading, we are all part of the massive multitude seeking out Jesus, even when we may not always feel like we belong. What we receive from the Lord is unlike anything we can have from a natural source, and that is why we rely on Him. Jesus instructs us to come to Him, make our requests known by knocking at His door, and even touching Him—a metaphor highlighted in today’s Gospel. In our moments of distress, we persistently seek our Lord’s touch because there is a deep-seated need in our hearts which only He can satisfy. The Eucharist, fittingly called «broken bread for a broken people,» stands as one of the sacred ways we connect with the Lord.

Meditation
Our Gospel teaches us to emulate Jesus, recognising the needs of those around us, and responding with compassion. In much the same ways as Jesus observes the plight of the man with the withered hand, we too should strive to acknowledge the suffering in our communities, families, and within ourselves. Let us not be hindered by rigid rules or judgments as the Scribes and Pharisees do. Let us instead open our hearts to the cries for help from those hurting around us. The Gospel remains profoundly pertinent to the modern world as it emphasises that acts of kindness should not be limited to specific seasons. It is essential to allow our hearts to guide us to show compassion to others. The world must understand that the only path to enhancing our collective wellbeing is through self-improvement. If we remain oblivious to what is beneficial for others, achieving the desired growth would be elusive. Conversely, relying solely on our visual perception is insufficient. To understand the genuine motives of those who act, one must delve into their inner selves. In this modern world, how do we measure the extent of kindness and compassion?

Frères, Melkisédek était roi de Salem, prêtre du Dieu très-haut; il vint à la rencontre d’Abraham quand celui- ci rentrait de son expédition contre les rois ; il le bénit, et Abraham lui remit le dixième de tout ce qu’il avait pris. D’abord, Melkisédek porte un nom qui veut dire « roi de justice » ; ensuite, il est roi de Salem, c’est- à- dire roi « de paix», et à son sujet on ne parle ni de père ni de mère, ni d’ancêtres, ni d’un commencement d’existence ni d’une fin de vie ; cela le fait ressembler au Fils de Dieu : il demeure prêtre pour toujours. Les choses sont encore beaucoup plus claires si un autre prêtre se lève à la ressemblance de Melkisédek et devient prêtre, non pas selon une exigence légale de filiation humaine, mais par la puissance d’une vie indestructible. Nous avons dans la première lecture une belle homélie qui nous éclaire sur le mystère du Christ-prêtre et qui justifie l’efficacité de son sacerdoce. Le prêtre est au service de la vie, puisque notre Dieu est le Dieu de la vie. C’est pour la vie qu’il nous a créés et c’est encore pour cette vie qu’il a entrepris de nous sauver par le Christ Jésus. Sauver une vie ne saurait être une enfreinte à la loi, cette dernière a d’ailleurs été instituée pour rendre la vie épanouie, conformément à la volonté du Créateur.

As with so many of the early Roman martyrs, very little is now known about Agnes’ life. Agnes was filled with the love of God from an early age, vowed herself to celibacy, and when the opportunity of martyrdom arose, she did not hide away but stepped forward and took it.

Behold, now she follows the Lamb who was crucified for us, powerful in virginity, modesty her offering, a sacrifice on the altar of chastity.

First reading: Hebrews 6:10-20
God would not be so unjust as to forget all you have done, the love that you have for his name or the services you have done, and are still doing, for the saints. Our one desire is that every one of you should go on showing the same earnestness to the end, to the perfect fulfilment of our hopes, never growing careless, but imitating those who have the faith and the perseverance to inherit the promises. When God made the promise to Abraham, he swore by his own self, since it was impossible for him to swear by anyone greater: I will shower blessings on you and give you many descendants. Because of that, Abraham persevered and saw the promise fulfilled. Men, of course, swear an oath by something greater than themselves, and between men, confirmation by an oath puts an end to all dispute. In the same way, when God wanted to make the heirs to the promise thoroughly realise that his purpose was unalterable, he conveyed this by an oath; so that there would be two unalterable things in which it was impossible for God to be lying, and so that we, now we have found safety, should have a strong encouragement to take a firm grip on the hope that is held out to us. Here we have an anchor for our soul, as sure as it is firm, and reaching right through beyond the veil where Jesus has entered before us and on our behalf, to become a high priest of the order of Melchizedek, and for ever.

O God, who bestowed on Saint Agnes a crown among the Saints for her twofold triumph of virginity and martyrdom, grant, we pray, through the power of this Sacrament, that, bravely overcoming every evil, we may attain the glory of heaven. Through Christ our Lord.

Amid our hectic lives, do we still make time to listen to God’s words and teachings? In today’s fast-paced world of technological communication, we can become so absorbed in our daily responsibilities that we forget to maintain a close relationship with God. The Sabbath is intended to be a day of rest and worship for God. It offers an opportunity to express gratitude to God for our blessings and to pray to Him to keep us safe from harm. God, as the Creator of the Sabbath, wants everyone to view it as a time to connect with Him and one another rather than as a burden. In the Gospel, Jesus teaches us that God is not a harsh taskmaster waiting to pounce on our every mistake. Instead, God is a loving Father who desires our happiness and well-being. Let us strive to live our lives in a way that reflects this love, approaching the law with a merciful heart, and always seeking to do what is good and just in the eyes of God.
