First reading: Hebrews 3:7-14
The Holy Spirit says: If only you would listen to him today; do not harden your hearts, as happened in the Rebellion, on the Day of Temptation in the wilderness, when your ancestors challenged me and tested me, though they had seen what I could do for forty years. That was why I was angry with that generation and said: How unreliable these people who refuse to grasp my ways! And so, in anger, I swore that not one would reach the place of rest I had for them. Take care, brothers, that there is not in any one of your community a wicked mind, so unbelieving as to turn away from the living God. Every day, as long as this ‘today’ lasts, keep encouraging one another so that none of you is hardened by the lure of sin, because we shall remain co-heirs with Christ only if we keep a grasp on our first confidence right to the end.

A leper came to Jesus and pleaded on his knees: ‘If you want to’ he said ‘you can cure me.’ Feeling sorry for him, Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him. ‘Of course I want to!’ he said. ‘Be cured!’ And the leprosy left him at once and he was cured. Jesus immediately sent him away and sternly ordered him, ‘Mind you say nothing to anyone, but go and show yourself to the priest, and make the offering for your healing prescribed by Moses as evidence of your recovery.’ The man went away, but then started talking about it freely and telling the story everywhere, so that Jesus could no longer go openly into any town, but had to stay outside in places where nobody lived. Even so, people from all around would come to him.

Meditation
Jesus places immense values on every life. His compassionate declaration to the leper, “Of course I want to!” reveals his heartfelt decision to heal him. Jesus’ encounter with the leper provides powerful insights: Firstly, God’s love transcends boundaries. Like the leper, we all carry our forms of leprosy – our wounds, fears, and brokenness. But the Gospel assures us that God’s love reaches into the darkest corners of our lives, offering healing and wholeness. Secondly, we learn that compassion is a catalyst for action. Jesus does not merely feel compassion for the leper, He acts. His outreach teaches us that true compassion is not passive but active, compelling us to step outside ourselves and touch the lives of those who suffer around us. The third and most crucial lesson is that faith opens the door to healing. The leper’s faith is key. He believes in Jesus’ power and approaches Him willingly. This reminds us that faith acts as a bridge between our need and God’s grace. Our «If you want» reflects an open heart that allows God’s healing touch to work in our lives.

She was born in County Limerick, at a place now called Killeedy after her. She was known for her sanctity and for her gift of prophecy and was held in veneration by a large number of saints, both men and women.

First reading: Hebrews 2:14-18
Since all the children share the same blood and flesh, Christ too shared equally in it, so that by his death he could take away all the power of the devil, who had power over death, and set free all those who had been held in slavery all their lives by the fear of death. For it was not the angels that he took to himself; he took to himself descent from Abraham. It was essential that he should in this way become completely like his brothers so that he could be a compassionate and trustworthy high priest of God’s religion, able to atone for human sins. That is, because he has himself been through temptation he is able to help others who are tempted.

On leaving the synagogue, Jesus went with James and John straight to the house of Simon and Andrew. Now Simon’s mother-in-law had gone to bed with fever, and they told him about her straightaway. He went to her, took her by the hand and helped her up. And the fever left her and she began to wait on them. That evening, after sunset, they brought to him all who were sick and those who were possessed by devils. The whole town came crowding round the door, and he cured many who were suffering from diseases of one kind or another; he also cast out many devils, but he would not allow them to speak, because they knew who he was. In the morning, long before dawn, he got up and left the house, and went off to a lonely place and prayed there. Simon and his companions set out in search of him, and when they found him they said, ‘Everybody is looking for you.’ He answered, ‘Let us go elsewhere, to the neighbouring country towns, so that I can preach there too, because that is why I came.’ And he went all through Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and casting out devils.

Meditation
Jesus intimately understands our human condition, having experienced it Himself. By becoming one of us, He lived through every aspect of our daily experience. He has known sickness, heartbreaks, loss of a loved one, poverty, and more. He is acquainted with all our problems because He personally encountered them. His purpose in coming into the world is to address and solve these issues. In the Gospel, we witness Him healing people and liberating them from demons. Yet, Jesus is more than a mere wonderworker. His ultimate mission is to offer true liberation from sin which comes when we accept and embrace His word. His healing is accompanied by preaching. Let us attentively listen to His words, allowing them to guide us. In so doing, we can be assured of finding solutions to life’s problems.

Aussitôt, on parla à Jésus de la malade. Jésus s’approcha, la saisit par la main et la fit lever. La fièvre la quitta, et elle les servait. Le soir venu, après le coucher du soleil, on lui amenait tous ceux qui étaient atteints d’un mal ou possédés par des démons. La ville entière se pressait à la porte. Il guérit beaucoup de gens atteints de toutes sortes de maladies, et il expulsa beaucoup de démons ; il empêchait les démons de parler, parce qu’ils savaient, eux, qui il était. Le lendemain, Jésus se leva, bien avant l’aube. Il sortit et se rendit dans un endroit désert, et là il priait. Simon et ceux qui étaient avec lui partirent à sa recherche. Méditation
La vie chrétienne ne s’accommode pas avec la sédentarisation ; elle n’est pas une possession tranquille de la foi pour soi. Les chrétiens sont le truchement de l’extension du royaume et la contagion de la vie d’amour. Jésus attire à lui les foules et va vers elles. Il y a dans la page d’évangile de ce jour comme un mouvement d’empressement témoigné par l’adverbe « aussitôt » doublement utilisé par Marc. Cependant, une telle énergie ne peut venir que de l’intimité avec Dieu dans la prière. Trouvons en elle la force et le dynamisme qui nous meuvent et nous accomplissent comme sauvés.

Saint Felix of Nola (d. ca. 250) was a Christian presbyter at Nola near Naples in Italy. He sold off his possessions in order to give to the poor. He was believed to have died a martyr’s death.

God did not appoint angels to be rulers of the world to come, and that world is what we are talking about. Somewhere there is a passage that shows us this. For a short while you made him lower than the angels; you crowned him with glory and splendour. You have put him in command of everything. Well then, if he has put him in command of everything, he has left nothing which is not under his command. At present, it is true, we are not able to see that everything has been put under his command, but we do see in Jesus one who was for a short while made lower than the angels and is now crowned with glory and splendour because he submitted to death; by God’s grace he had to experience death for all mankind. As it was his purpose to bring a great many of his sons into glory, it was appropriate that God, for whom everything exists and through whom everything exists, should make perfect, through suffering, the leader who would take them to their salvation. For the one who sanctifies, and the ones who are sanctified, are of the same stock; that is why he openly calls them brothers in the text: I shall announce your name to my brothers, praise you in full assembly.

In their synagogue just then there was a man possessed by an unclean spirit and it shouted, ‘What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are: the Holy One of God.’ But Jesus said sharply, ‘Be quiet! Come out of him!’ And the unclean spirit threw the man into convulsions and with a loud cry went out of him. The people were so astonished that they started asking each other what it all meant. ‘Here is a teaching that is new’ they said ‘and with authority behind it: he gives orders even to unclean spirits and they obey him.’ And his reputation rapidly spread everywhere, through all the surrounding Galilean countryside.

Meditation
Our Gospel today portrays Jesus’ authority to teach and to act as the Messiah and Saviour, showcasing his triumph over unclean spirits – a clear sign that God’s salvation has come to the world. Throughout the Gospels, we encounter numerous instances of our Lord’s continuous and triumphant battle against the forces of evil. His authority is seen in His actions. In today’s Gospel, Jesus gives a command, and the evil forces release their their stranglehold on a man they have been holding captive. Amazingly, the evil forces recognise Jesus for who He is, «the Holy One of God», thus acknowledging His identity long before anyone else, even His Apostles. By His death and resurrection, Jesus has been perfected and has received authority over all things and all living beings in heaven, on earth, and beneath the earth. There is nothing He cannot do for you. No difficulty is beyond Jesus’ resolution, no problem beyond His solution. Let us allow Him to purify us from our sins. Let us attentively listen to His teachings and become members of His Body, the Church. With Jesus, we will overcome the works of the evil one.

Plus que sa beauté, c’est son inlassable charité qui la fait aimer et respecter. Ayant obtenu par ses prières la guérison d’un enfant, elle est appelée auprès de la reine Nana qui se meurt. Elle lui rend la santé.

1ère lecture : Hébreux 10, 19-25
Ce n’est pas à des anges que Dieu a soumis le monde à venir, dont nous parlons. Un psaume l’atteste en disant : Qu’est-ce que l’homme pour que tu penses à lui, le fils d’un homme, que tu en prennes souci ? Tu l’as abaissé un peu au-dessous des anges, tu l’as couronné de gloire et d’honneur ; tu as mis sous ses pieds toutes choses. Quand Dieu lui a tout soumis, il n’a rien exclu de cette soumission. Maintenant, nous ne voyons pas encore que tout lui soit soumis ; mais Jésus, qui a été abaissé un peu au-dessous des anges, nous le voyons couronné de gloire et d’honneur à cause de sa Passion et de sa mort. Si donc il a fait l’expérience de la mort, c’est, par grâce de Dieu, au profit de tous. Celui pour qui et par qui tout existe voulait conduire une multitude de fils jusqu’à la gloire ; c’est pourquoi il convenait qu’il mène à sa perfection, par des souffrances, celui qui est à l’origine de leur salut. Car celui qui sanctifie, et ceux qui sont sanctifiés, doivent tous avoir même origine ; pour cette raison, Jésus n’a pas honte de les appeler ses frères, quand il dit : Je proclamerai ton nom devant mes frères, je te chanterai en pleine assemblée.

Évangile Mc 1, 21-28
Jésus et ses disciples entrèrent à Capharnaüm. Aussitôt, le jour du sabbat, il se rendit à la synagogue, et là, il enseignait. On était frappé par son enseignement, car il enseignait en homme qui a autorité, et non pas comme les scribes. Or, il y avait dans leur synagogue un homme tourmenté par un esprit impur, qui se mit à crier : « Que nous veux-tu, Jésus de Nazareth ? Es-tu venu pour nous perdre ? Je sais qui tu es : tu es le Saint de Dieu. » Jésus l’interpella vivement : « Tais-toi ! Sors de cet homme. » L’esprit impur le fit entrer en convulsions, puis, poussant un grand cri, sortit de lui. Ils furent tous frappés de stupeur et se demandaient entre eux : « Qu’est-ce que cela veut dire ? Voilà un enseignement nouveau, donné avec autorité ! Il commande même aux esprits impurs, et ils lui obéissent. » Sa renommée se répandit aussitôt partout, dans toute la région de la Galilée.

Méditation
« L’essentiel c’est de croire dans son cœur », entend-on souvent dire par certaines personnes. Sans être indifférent aux éventuels contre-témoignages et scandales qui causent de cette attitude, il faut dire que la foi a cette spécificité qu’elle fait de nous des maillons d’une chaîne de personnes aux codes, valeurs et traditions propres. Nos assemblées de foi dominicales, nous rappelle Saint Paul, sont d’importance capitale pour nos croissance et épanouissement spirituels. La foi se vit et se vérifie dans la rencontre et dans la célébration du mystère qui est son objet. Et Jésus de nous interpeller : faites attention à ce que vous entendez ! Purifions notre cœur de tout ce qui souille notre conscience, brillons de la splendeur de notre être en Christ, de peur que nous soit enlevé ce que nous voulons tranquillement posséder.

Meditation
Jesus begins his public ministry with a powerful and concise call for repentance, urging people to embrace a new way of living and understanding the world. He rightly believes that “together we can have a better world.” He seeks out co-workers who will help Him in His mission as Saviour and Redeemer of the human race. Interestingly, He does not choose individuals with high-sounding academic achievements or from prominent families. Instead, He selects fishermen, men accustomed to the hardships of life at sea, people for whom life is a struggle, and whose lifestyle is simple. The task ahead of them is challenging as they must preach to people, including those who are better educated and richer than them – the Scribes and the Pharisees. However, this does not deter them from their mission once our Lord has empowered them. A simple invitation to follow Him is sufficient for them to abandon their former lives, and devote themselves entirely to the Master’s service. In the same way, the Lord chooses us daily to leave our old ways of life and follow Him. The question is: “Am I ready to listen to His call?”

Évêque de Poitiers, Hilaire (315-367) fut l’ardent défenseur de la foi en la divinité du Christ, niée par les ariens ; il souffrit l’exil en raison de sa prise de position contre ces hérétiques. En Orient où cet évêque gaulois avait été exilé par l’empereur Constance, il ne cessa d’écrire à la gloire du Christ, qu’il n’avait pourtant découvert qu’à l’âge adulte.

Méditation
Entre le Père et le Fils, il n’existe pas de différence d’essence : ils partagent la même nature divine. Le Fils est le reflet de son Père, l’expression parfaite de son être, le rayonnement de sa gloire, comme il nous est révélé dans la première lecture. Jésus est le plénipotentiaire et le dépositaire de l’autorité divine, celui devant qui toute créature se prosterne. Cette grandeur du Christ ne fait pourtant pas de lui un être condescendant qui nous tient loin de lui. Au contraire, en nous appelant à devenir ses disciples, il veut que nous ayons part avec lui et le préférions à tout. Pouvons-nous vraiment tout quitter et tout lui donner par amour ? En fait, la plus grande preuve d’amour qu’il nous réclame, c’est que nous divorcions d’avec le péché.

Second Reading : Titus 2:11-14,3:4-7
God’s grace has been revealed, and it has made salvation possible for the whole human race and taught us that what we have to do is to give up everything that does not lead to God, and all our worldly ambitions; we must be self-restrained and live good and religious lives here in this present world, while we are waiting in hope for the blessing which will come with the Appearing of the glory of our great God and saviour Christ Jesus. He sacrificed himself for us in order to set us free from all wickedness and to purify a people so that it could be his very own and would have no ambition except to do good. But when the kindness and love of God our saviour for mankind were revealed, it was not because he was concerned with any righteous actions we might have done ourselves; it was for no reason except his own compassion that he saved us, by means of the cleansing water of rebirth and by renewing us with the Holy Spirit which he has so generously poured over us through Jesus Christ our saviour. He did this so that we should be justified by his grace, to become heirs looking forward to inheriting eternal life.

Meditation
After Jesus’ Baptism, we observe him in a moment of prayer. Why this moment of prayer? This quiet prayer carries a powerful message; it teaches us that even in moments of our greatest strength, we need to pause and turn towards God in prayer to find that connection with God that fuels our journey. The descent of the Holy Spirit and the divine voice affirm Jesus’ identity, purpose, and mission: “You are my Son, the Beloved; my favour rests on you.” Jesus’ Baptism serves as a reminder to us that amid the rush of our daily lives, the anxieties of the world, and the constant noise, we need to find those moments where we connect with the divine spark within, seek guidance, and draw strength for the journey ahead. May the stillness of Jesus’ prayer guide us, the descent of the Holy Spirit empower us, and the Father’s voice echo in our hearts to remind us that God delights in us (cf. Zeph 3:17).

2ème lecture : Tt 2, 11-14 ; 3, 4-7
Bien-aimé, la grâce de Dieu s’est manifestée pour le salut de tous les hommes. Elle nous apprend à renoncer à l’impiété et aux convoitises de ce monde, et à vivre dans le temps présent de manière raisonnable, avec justice et piété, attendant que se réalise la bienheureuse espérance : la manifestation de la gloire de notre grand Dieu et Sauveur, Jésus Christ. Car il s’est donné pour nous afin de nous racheter de toutes nos fautes, et de nous purifier pour faire de nous son peuple, un peuple ardent à faire le bien. Lorsque Dieu, notre Sauveur, a manifesté sa bonté et son amour pour les hommes, il nous a sauvés, non pas à cause de la justice de nos propres actes, mais par sa miséricorde. Par le bain du baptême, il nous a fait renaître et nous a renouvelés dans l’Esprit Saint. Cet Esprit, Dieu l’a répandu sur nous en abondance, par Jésus Christ notre Sauveur, afin que, rendus justes par sa grâce, nous devenions en espérance héritiers de la vie éternelle.

Méditation
Dans le mystère, le baptême est un bain de régénération spirituelle, une plongée dans la miséricorde de Dieu pour une vie nouvelle. Le baptême de Jésus a pour objet de rendre le nôtre possible. Il a redonné à l’eau son pouvoir génératif et vivificateur, en l’imprégnant de son Esprit. Le Christ accomplit ce service de solidarité pour nous libérer de la dette du péché, pour faire disparaître de notre horizon le monde ancien et inaugurer les temps de la grâce qui manifestent ce qu’est péché, tout en nous rendant capables du bien. À cet effet, la méthode que Dieu prescrit aux annonciateurs de ce mystère requiert que dorénavant l’on parle au cœur des hommes et non plus davantage à leur intelligence. Un cœur touché par l’amour met l’intelligence au service de son bonheur dont Dieu est la réalisation.

1ère lecture : 1 Jn 5, 14-21

Et, puisque nous savons qu’il nous écoute en toutes nos demandes, nous savons aussi que nous obtenons ce que nous lui avons demandé. Si quelqu’un voit son frère commettre un péché qui n’entraîne pas la mort, il demandera, et Dieu lui donnera la vie, – cela vaut pour ceux dont le péché n’entraîne pas la mort. Il y a un péché qui entraîne la mort, ce n’est pas pour celui-là que je dis de prier. Toute conduite injuste est péché, mais tout péché n’entraîne pas la mort. Nous le savons: ceux qui sont nés de Dieu ne commettent pas de péché; le Fils engendré par Dieu les protège et le Mauvais ne peut pas les atteindre. Nous savons que nous sommes de Dieu, alors que le monde entier est au pouvoir du Mauvais. On venait là pour se faire baptiser. En effet, Jean n’avait pas encore été mis en prison. Or, il y eut une discussion entre les disciples de Jean et un Juif au sujet des bains de purification. Ils allèrent trouver Jean et lui dirent: «Rabbi, celui qui était avec toi de l’autre côté du Jourdain, celui à qui tu as rendu témoignage, le voilà qui baptise, et tous vont à lui!» Jean répondit: «Un homme ne peut rien s’attribuer, sinon ce qui lui est donné du Ciel. Vous-mêmes pouvez témoigner que j’ai dit: Moi, je ne suis pas le Christ, mais j’ai été envoyé devant lui. Celui à qui l’épouse appartient, c’est l’époux; quant à l’ami de l’époux, il se tient là, il entend la voix de l’époux, et il en est tout joyeux. Telle est ma joie: elle est parfaite. Lui, il faut qu’il grandisse; et moi, que je diminue.»

De la prière de foi comme gage d’exaucement au refus des idoles qui ont fait main basse sur notre monde, en passant la solidarité priante en faveur de ceux qui sont sur le chemin d’égarement, notre vie de foi ne peut être épanouie que sous le couvert de l’assurance que procure la présence aimante de Dieu à nos côtés. Ce chemin de fidélité ne peut être satisfait que si nous faisons de l’humilité, qui consiste à diminuer en notre orgueil et laisser grandir Dieu dans notre vie, notre leitmotiv et notre marque distinctive.
