Blessed André Grasset (1758 – 1792)
Psalter: Week II
He was born in Montréal on 3 April 1758 and ordained priest in 1783. In the face of persecution he took shelter with the Eudist Fathers in Paris. He was executed in 1792 together with almost 200 other priests. He was beatified by Pope Pius XI on 17 October 1926.

First reading: 1 Thessalonians 5:1-6, 9-11
You will not be expecting us to write anything to you, brothers, about ‘times and seasons’, since you know very well that the Day of the Lord is going to come like a thief in the night. It is when people are saying, ‘How quiet and peaceful it is’ that the worst suddenly happens, as suddenly as labour pains come on a pregnant woman; and there will be no way for anybody to evade it. But it is not as if you live in the dark, my brothers, for that Day to overtake you like a thief. No, you are all sons of light and sons of the day: we do not belong to the night or to darkness, so we should not go on sleeping, as everyone else does, but stay wide awake and sober. God never meant us to experience the Retribution, but to win salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us so that, alive or dead, we should still live united to him. So give encouragement to each other, and keep strengthening one another, as you do already.

In the synagogue there was a man who was possessed by the spirit of an unclean devil, and it shouted at the top of its voice, ‘Ha! What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are: the Holy One of God.’ But Jesus said sharply, ‘Be quiet! Come out of him!’ And the devil, throwing the man down in front of everyone, went out of him without hurting him at all. Meditation
“I know who you are: the Holy One of God.” This affirmation has the potential to lead me astray! Pausing for a moment, I ask myself: Who is making this declaration about Jesus in this particular context? I am confronted with a disheartening reality: in the past, and even now, I am still often carried away by just anyone who makes open declarations for Jesus! I follow without heeding Jesus’ warning that ‘not everyone who shouts “Lord! Lord!” is genuinely on the path to Heaven!’ Upon revisiting Paul’s words in the First Reading: “Give encouragement to each other, and keep strengthening one another,’’ I am tempted to ponder whether all the ‘reports of Him (Jesus)’ that ‘went all through the surrounding countryside,’ are all positive and encouraging. Reflecting on my conduct as a follower of Christ, I question whether it has consistently uplifted and encouraged God’s other children.

Psalter: Week II
Saint Giles was a seventh century Athenian of noble birth. His piety and learning made him an object of such admiration. He spent many years in solitude with God. He founded a monastery with an excellent discipline therein. St. Giles died in about the year 724.

He has sent me to bring the good news to the poor, to proclaim liberty to captives and to the blind new sight, to set the downtrodden free, to proclaim the Lord’s year of favour. He then rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the assistant and sat down. And all eyes in the synagogue were fixed on him. Then he began to speak to them, ‘This text is being fulfilled today even as you listen.’ And he won the approval of all, and they were astonished by the gracious words that came from his lips. They said, ‘This is Joseph’s son, surely?’ But he replied, ‘No doubt you will quote me the saying, “Physician, heal yourself” and tell me, “We have heard all that happened in Capernaum, do the same here in your own countryside.”’ And he went on, ‘I tell you solemnly, no prophet is ever accepted in his own country. ‘There were many widows in Israel, I can assure you, in Elijah’s day, when heaven remained shut for three years and six months and a great famine raged throughout the land, but Elijah was not sent to any one of these: he was sent to a widow at Zarephath, a Sidonian town. And in the prophet Elisha’s time there were many lepers in Israel, but none of these was cured, except the Syrian, Naaman.’ When they heard this everyone in the synagogue was enraged. They sprang to their feet and hustled him out of the town; and they took him up to the brow of the hill their town was built on, intending to throw him down the cliff, but he slipped through the crowd and walked away.

Meditation
This profound Gospel has resonated with me now for many years. If this were to unfold as a theatrical play, I wonder which of the actors I would love to be. Would it be the scroll, from which Jesus reads? Or the assistant graciously handing the scroll to Jesus? Or one of the individuals in the synagogue, who is fixing his eyes on Jesus with admiration, only to later join the crowd in fury, leading Jesus to the brow of the hill with the intent to stone Him? Alternatively, I might act the role of Jesus, fearlessly speaking the truth as it is, and confronting the impending storm. Lord Jesus, guide me to steadfastly stand by Your side, regardless of how many may oppose the profound truths You proclaim for our spiritual growth.

1ère lecture : 1 Th 4, 13-18

En ce temps-là, Jésus vint à Nazareth, où il avait été élevé. Selon son habitude, il entra dans la synagogue le jour du sabbat, et il se leva pour faire la lecture. On lui remit le livre du prophète Isaïe. Il ouvrit le livre et trouva le passage où il est écrit L’Esprit du Seigneur est sur moi parce que le Seigneur m’a consacré par l’onction. Il m’a envoyé porter la Bonne Nouvelle aux pauvres, annoncer aux captifs leur libération, et aux aveugles qu’ils retrouveront la vue, remettre en liberté les opprimés, annoncer une année favorable accordée par le Seigneur. Jésus referma le livre, le rendit au servant et s’assit. Tous, dans la synagogue, avaient les yeux fixés sur lui. Alors il se mit à leur dire : « Aujourd’hui s’accomplit ce passage de l’Écriture que vous venez d’entendre » Tous lui rendaient témoignage et s’étonnaient des paroles de grâce qui sortaient de sa bouche. Ils se disaient : « N’est-ce pas là le fils de Joseph ? » Mais il leur dit : « Sûrement vous allez me citer le dicton: “Médecin, guéris-toi toi-même”, et me dire:“Nous avons appris tout ce qui s’est passé à Capharnaüm:fais donc de même ici dans ton lieu d’origine !”» Puis il ajouta : « Amen, je vous le dis: aucun prophète ne trouve un accueil favorable dans son pays. En vérité, je vous le dis : Au temps du prophète Élie, lorsque pendant trois ans et demi le ciel retint la pluie, et qu’une grande famine se produisit sur toute la terre, il y avait beaucoup de veuves en Israël ; pourtant Élie ne fut envoyé vers aucune d’entre elles, mais bien dans la ville de Sarepta, au pays de Sidon, chez une veuve étrangère. Au temps du prophète Élisée, il y avait beaucoup de lépreux en Israël ; et aucun d’eux n’a été purifié, mais bien Naaman le Syrien. »À ces mots, dans la synagogue, tous devinrent furieux. Ils se levèrent, poussèrent Jésus hors de la ville, et le menèrent jusqu’à un escarpement de la colline où leur ville est construite, pour le précipiter en bas. Mais lui, passant au milieu d’eux, allait son chemin.

Méditation
Nos yeux fixés sur Jésus
Très souvent, lorsque nos yeux sont fixés sur quelqu’un, c’est parce que nous voulons qu’il agisse ou parle ou, encore plus, nous sommes simplement en admiration devant son mystère. Même aujourd’hui, les gens regardent toujours Jésus avec émerveillement car nous ne savons pas comment Il peut être si ordinaire, et pourtant si extraordinaire. En vérité, nous exigeons des preuves de ses affirmations, parfois avec des signes et des prodiges, bien qu’ils abondent autour de nous. Pour être honnête, Jésus reste un mystère pour beaucoup, mais ce n’est pas le défi. Le défi est : pourquoi nos yeux sont-ils fixés sur Lui ? Est-ce pour grandir dans le mystère ou pour lever les mains en désespoir de cause, incrédules qu’une présence si ordinaire puisse être la présence du divin ?

He said this, ‘When someone invites you to a wedding feast, do not take your seat in the place of honour. A more distinguished person than you may have been invited, and the person who invited you both may come and say, “Give up your place to this man.” And then, to your embarrassment, you would have to go and take the lowest place. No; when you are a guest, make your way to the lowest place and sit there, so that, when your host comes, he may say, “My friend, move up higher.” In that way, everyone with you at the table will see you honoured. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and the man who humbles himself will be exalted.’ Then he said to his host, ‘When you give a lunch or a dinner, do not ask your friends, brothers, relations or rich neighbours, for fear they repay your courtesy by inviting you in return. Meditation
Humility can elevate you to greater heights rather than immediately seeking the spotlight. It is essential not to expect to heads to bow to you solely on the basis of your position, as someone may surpass us, leading to potential embarrassment. In a modern context, it is prudent to prioritise caution over pride to avoid unfavourable consequences. Being humble does not mean you should think less of yourself; rather, it involves focusing less on yourself and more on others. Such authentic humility will be visible to both the people around you and the Lord Himself. While you receive immediate material rewards, you will earn trust and respect as a valuable outcome. This is similar to extending help to those in need, even if we do not know them, and the ultimate rewards will be love and respect. Serving our loved ones and relatives is commendable, but extending genuine concern and charity to those unrelated by blood, adds an extra layer of kindness. Experiencing rewards which we did not expect brings an enduring sense of fulfillment.

Mais vous êtes venus vers la montagne de Sion et vers la ville du Dieu vivant, la Jérusalem céleste, vers des myriades d’anges en fête et vers l’assemblée des premiers-nés dont les noms sont inscrits dans les cieux. Un jour de sabbat, Jésus était entré dans la maison d’un chef des pharisiens pour y prendre son repas, et ces derniers l’observaient. Jésus dit une parabole aux invités lorsqu’il remarqua comment ils choisissaient les premières places, et il leur dit : « Quand quelqu’un t’invite à des noces, ne va pas t’installer à la première place, de peur qu’il ait invité un autre plus considéré que toi. Alors, celui qui vous a invités, toi et lui, viendra te dire : ‘Cède-lui ta place’ ; et, à ce moment, tu iras, plein de honte, prendre la dernière place. Au contraire, quand tu es invité, va te mettre à la dernière place. Alors, quand viendra celui qui t’a invité, il te dira : ‘Mon ami, avance plus haut’, et ce sera pour toi un honneur aux yeux de tous ceux qui seront à la table avec toi. En effet, quiconque s’élève sera abaissé ; qui s’abaisse sera élevé. » Jésus disait aussi à celui qui l’avait invité : « Quand tu donnes un déjeuner ou un dîner, n’invite pas tes amis, ni tes frères, ni tes parents, ni de riches voisins ; sinon, eux aussi te rendraient l’invitation et ce serait pour toi un don en retour. Au contraire, quand tu donnes une réception, invite des pauvres, des estropiés, des boiteux, des aveugles; heureux seras-tu, parce qu’ils n’ont rien à te donner en retour : cela te sera rendu à la résurrection des justes. »

Rassasiés par le pain de la vie, nous te prions, Seigneur: Que cette nourriture fortifie l’amour en nos cours, et nous incite à te servir dans nos frères. Par Jésus.
Méditation
Quiconque s’élève sera abaissé ; qui s’abaisse sera élevé. Voila un enseignement qui se vérifie très souvent. Ce que nous tirons de cette phrase c’est la nécessite d’être humble pour grandir, pour apprendre et pour être élevé. Être humble, c’est adopter la posture de serviteur face à tout homme, c’est le valoriser, le considérer meilleur que nous même quelque soit son rang social et quelque soit notre rang notre statut social. Mère Teresa de Calcutta nous a enseigner que l’humilité consiste à vivre dans la vérité. Être vrai c’est en effet se prendre pour ce que l’on est réellement sans ajouter ni ôter car c’est orgueilleux de se considérer que l’on est ce que nous ne sommes pas en réalité. Ce qu’il faut comprendre c’est que l’on va au ciel en s’abaissant.

She was born in York. At the age of 15 she married a butcher, John Clitherow, and three years later became a Catholic. She was crushed to death with a heavy stone, on 25 March 1586 for being a catholic and hiding catholic priests in her house.

To one he gave five talents, to another two, to a third one; each in proportion to his ability. Then he set out. ‘The man who had received the five talents promptly went and traded with them and made five more. The man who had received two made two more in the same way. But the man who had received one went off and dug a hole in the ground and hid his master’s money. ‘Now a long time after, the master of those servants came back and went through his accounts with them. O Lord, who gained for yourself a people by adoption through the one sacrifice offered once for all, bestow graciously on us, we pray, the gifts of unity and peace in your Church. Through Christ our Lord.

Complete within us, O Lord, we pray, the healing work of your mercy and graciously perfect and sustain us, so that in all things we may please you. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
The central theme of today’s gospel encourages us to maximise our talents. Take a few, quiet moments of reflection to compile a list of all your talents and skills. Among those you have identified, consider which ones bring you joy, especially when used to address the needs of people around you. Express gratitude to God for the opportunity to bear much fruit in life. Recognise that God has entrusted His creation to you, makimg you responsible for the happiness of many. This include the lives of your family members, friends, and neighbours. Embrace your responsibilities and avoid comparing yourselves to others. God distributes talents according to each person’s ability, so refrain from spiritual laziness or the tendency to avoid tasks. Succumbing to such laziness can lead to pessimism, hindering your ability to fulfill your entrusted roles effectively.

Méditation
La corruption gangrène le fonctionnement de nos pays et de nos cœurs au point de ne plus faire confiance, ni même valoriser le travail et l’effort personnel. Ce phénomène a créé la paresse chez certains et l’a accentuée chez d’autres. Tous ont pourtant reçu les talents des dons pour briller mais ils n’y croient pas. J’ai eu peur, et je suis allé cacher ton talent dans la terre. Le premier péché de ce serviteur c’est de ne pas vouloir prendre de risque et de ne pas faire d’effort. Prendre le risque est un acte de foi et d’Esperance. C’est incertain oui mais la foi me dit d’agir avec Dieu et pour lui et d’espérer recevoir de lui la récompense promise, car Dieu réalise toujours sa promesse. Dieu sait que nous n’avons rien mais il sait également qu’il nous donne tout par la foi.

The Beheading of St John the Baptist

John the Baptist is the only saint in the calendar (apart from St Joseph) who has two feasts to himself. One, in August, celebrates his death, and one, in June, celebrates his birth. And this is as it should be, for as Christ himself said, John was the greatest of the sons of men.
Entrance Antiphon: Cf. Ps 118: 46-47
I spoke, O Lord, of your decrees before kings, and was not confounded; I pondered your commands and loved them greatly.
Collect
O God, who willed that Saint John the Baptist should go ahead of your Son both in his birth and in his death, grant that, as he died a Martyr for truth and justice,
we, too, may fight hard for the confession of what you teach. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
First reading: 1 Thessalonians 4:1-8
Brothers, we urge you and appeal to you in the Lord Jesus to make more and more progress in the kind of life that you are meant to live: the life that God wants, as you learnt from us, and as you are already living it. You have not forgotten the instructions we gave you on the authority of the Lord Jesus. What God wants is for you all to be holy. He wants you to keep away from fornication, and each one of you to know how to use the body that belongs to him in a way that is holy and honourable, not giving way to selfish lust like the pagans who do not know God. He wants nobody at all ever to sin by taking advantage of a brother in these matters; the Lord always punishes sins of that sort, as we told you before and assured you. We have been called by God to be holy, not to be immoral; in other words, anyone who objects is not objecting to a human authority, but to God, who gives you his Holy Spirit.

Herod sent to have John arrested, and had him chained up in prison because of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife whom he had married. For John had told Herod, ‘It is against the law for you to have your brother’s wife.’ As for Herodias, she was furious with him and wanted to kill him; but she was not able to, because Herod was afraid of John, knowing him to be a good and holy man, and gave him his protection. When he had heard him speak he was greatly perplexed, and yet he liked to listen to him. An opportunity came on Herod’s birthday when he gave a banquet for the nobles of his court, for his army officers and for the leading figures in Galilee. When the daughter of this same Herodias came in and danced, she delighted Herod and his guests; so the king said to the girl, ‘Ask me anything you like and I will give it you.’ And he swore her an oath, ‘I will give you anything you ask, even half my kingdom.’ She went out and said to her mother, ‘What shall I ask for?’ She replied, ‘The head of John the Baptist.’ The girl hurried straight back to the king and made her request, ‘I want you to give me John the Baptist’s head, here and now, on a dish.’ The king was deeply distressed but, thinking of the oaths he had sworn and of his guests, he was reluctant to break his word to her. So the king at once sent one of the bodyguard with orders to bring John’s head. The man went off and beheaded him in prison; then he brought the head on a dish and gave it to the girl, and the girl gave it to her mother. When John’s disciples heard about this, they came and took his body and laid it in a tomb.

Through these offerings which we bring you, O Lord, grant that we may make straight your paths, as taught by that voice crying in the desert, Saint John the Baptist, who powerfully sealed his teaching by the shedding of his blood. Through Christ our Lord.

Prayer after Communion
Grant, O Lord, as we celebrate the heavenly birth of Saint John the Baptist, that we may revere, for what it signifies, the saving Sacrament we have received and, even more, may rejoice at its clear effects in us. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
Many times, we are so lured by the fleeting shimmer of earthly power and status that we fall into moral pride – a willful disregard for what our conscience gently whispers to us. Instead of moving towards righteousness, we often fail to humbly acknowledge when we have been wrong, or excessive in our decisions or actions. Rather than embracing propriety, we may fall into social pride, disregarding criticisms out of fear that admitting our faults and reforming our ways may lead others to think less of us. Both moral and social pride can dull our sense of right and wrong, disabling us from acting with due prudence and charity. In today’s gospel story, Herod serves as a poignant example of someone who, like us, may forget to pause and keep a distance from his ego. It is essential to allow God and others to guide us back to the path of our divine moral compass. This way, we can prevent the unjust modern-day ‘beheading’ of “John the Baptist” in our midst?

martyre de saint jean baptiste

Toute la vie de Jean Baptiste est un témoignage rendu à Celui qu’il précède, qu’il a mission de montrer, et devant qui il veut s’effacer. C’est le témoignage vigoureux d’un prophète qui ne cherche pas à plaire au monde, mais à le convertir par son exemple et sa parole.

Seigneur devant les rois, j’ai parlé de ton alliance sans craindre la honte. j’ai répété tes commandements, car vraiment je les aimé.
Prière d’ouverture
Tu as voulu, Seigneur, que Saint Jean Baptiste soit le précurseur de ton fils dans sa naissance et dans sa mort; il a donné sa vie pour la justice et la vérité; accorde-nous de savoir comme lui nous dépenser avec courage au service de ta parole. Par Jésus..
1ère lecture : 1 Th 4, 1-8
Frères, vous avez appris de nous comment il faut vous conduire pour plaire à Dieu ; et c’est ainsi que vous vous conduisez déjà. Faites donc de nouveaux progrès, nous vous le demandons, oui, nous vous en prions dans le Seigneur Jésus. Vous savez bien quelles instructions nous vous avons données de la part du Seigneur Jésus. La volonté de Dieu, c’est que vous viviez dans la sainteté, en vous abstenant de la débauche, et en veillant chacun à rester maître de son corps dans un esprit de sainteté et de respect, sans vous laisser entraîner par la convoitise comme font les païens qui ne connaissent pas Dieu. Dans ce domaine, il ne faut pas agir au détriment de son frère ni lui causer du tort, car de tout cela le Seigneur fait justice, comme nous vous l’avons déjà dit et attesté. En effet, Dieu nous a appelés, non pas pour que nous restions dans l’impureté, mais pour que nous vivions dans la sainteté. Ainsi donc celui qui rejette mes instructions, ce n’est pas un homme qu’il rejette, c’est Dieu lui-même, lui qui vous donne son Esprit Saint.

Le Seigneur est roi ! Exulte la terre! Joie pour les îles sans nombre! Ténèbres et nuée l’entourent, justice et droit sont l’appui de son trône.
Les montagnes fondaient comme cire devant le Seigneur, devant le Maître de toute la terre. Les cieux ont proclamé sa justice, et tous les peuples ont vu sa gloire.
Une lumière est semée pour le juste, et pour le cœur simple, une joie. Que le Seigneur soit votre joie, hommes justes ; rendez grâce en rappelant son nom très saint.

Évangile : Mc 6, 17-29
Hérode, prince de Galilée, avait fait arrêter Jean et l’avait mis en prison. En effet, il avait épousé Hérodiade, la femme de son frère Philippe, et Jean lui disait : « Tu n’as pas le droit de prendre la femme de ton frère. » Hérodiade en voulait donc à Jean, et elle cherchait à le faire mettre à mort. Mais elle n’y arrivait pas parce que Hérode avait peur de Jean : il savait que c’était un homme juste et saint, et il le protégeait; quand il l’avait entendu, il était très embarrassé, et pourtant, il aimait l’entendre. Cependant, une occasion favorable se présenta lorsque Hérode, pour son anniversaire, donna un banquet à ses dignitaires, aux chefs de l’armée et aux notables de la Galilée. La fille d’Hérodiade fit son entrée et dansa. Elle plut à Hérode et à ses convives. Le roi dit à la jeune fille : « Demande-moi tout ce que tu veux, je te le donnerai. » Et il lui fit ce serment : « Tout ce que tu me demanderas, je te le donnerai, même si c’est la moitié de mon royaume. » Elle sortit alors pour dire à sa mère : « Qu’est-ce que je vais demander ? » Hérodiade répondit : « La tête de Jean le Baptiste.» Aussitôt la jeune fille s’empressa de retourner auprès du roi, et lui fit cette demande : « Je veux que tout de suite tu me donnes sur un plat la tête de Jean Baptiste. » Le roi fut vivement contrarié ; mais à cause du serment fait devant les convives, il ne voulut pas lui opposer un refus. Aussitôt il envoya un garde avec l’ordre d’apporter la tête de Jean. Le garde s’en alla, et le décapita dans la prison. Il apporta la tête sur un plat, la donna à la jeune fille, et la jeune fille la donna à sa mère. Lorsque les disciples de Jean apprirent cela, ils vinrent prendre son corps et le déposèrent dans un tombeau.
Prière sur les offrandes
Par l’offrande que nous te présentons, Seigneur, accorde-nous cette droiture de vie que Jean Baptiste a prêchée en criant dans le désert et dont il a témoigné jusqu’au martyre. Par Jésus

Nous t’en prions, Seigneur notre Dieu: que la célébration du martyre de Jean Baptiste nous permette d’admirer dans les sacrements reçus les merveilles dont ils sont le signe, et, mieux encore, de goûter leur action en nous. Par Jésus.
Méditation
Hérode fait un serment qui ne repose que sur son propre pouvoir. Un pouvoir qu’il estime absolu et immense au point de ne pas le délimiter. C’est parfois le propre des politiques qui font des promesses au-delà de leurs capacités et qu’ils ne réalisent généralement pas ensuite. Par son pouvoir Hérode s’arroge le statut de Dieu, il promet de donner Tout et pourtant aucun homme fut il roi ne saurait tout avoir. Seul Dieu possède tout et lui seul donne tout ce dont nous avons besoin. Ce serment d’Hérode va ensuite l’obliger à sacrifier la vie de Jean Baptiste, une vie qui ne lui appartient pas mais qu’il va sacrifier. Ceci démontre qu’à chaque fois que l’homme prend la place de Dieu dans ses discours comme dans son agir, il est sujet de beaucoup d’erreurs. Il y a donc un prix a payer pour tous ceux qui deviennent disciples de la vérité. Jean paye par sa propre vie, d’autres par l’exclusion d’un groupe donné ou par la solitude.

Saint augustin,
eveque et docteur de l’eglise

Augustin fut d’abord un rhéteur africain dissolu ; la prière de sa mère, Monique, obtint la grâce de sa conversion qui fit de lui un cœur brûlant de charité. Cette charité qui anima son labeur pastoral, notamment dans la lutte contre les hérésies, lui inspira la maxime fameuse ‘’Aime et fais ce que tu veux’’. Baptisé à Milan par saint Ambroise, Augustin devint l’aide, puis le successeur de l’évêque d’Hippone. La place d’Augustin dans l’histoire de l’Eglise tient surtout à son œuvre théologique qui lui a mérité le titre de ‘’Docteur de la grâce’

Dans son Eglise, le Seigneur a donné la parole à l’évêque saint Augustin ; il l’a rempli de l’esprit de sagesse et d’intelligence, il l’a revêtu de gloire.

Renouvelle, Seigneur, dans ton Église l’Esprit dont tu as comblé l’évêque saint Augustin ; Pour que, remplis de ce même Esprit, nous n’ayons soif que de toi, source de la vraie sagesse, et ne cherchions que toi, auteur de l’éternel amour.
1ère lecture : 1 Th 3, 7-13
Frères, nous sommes réconfortés grâce à vous au milieu de toutes nos difficultés et de notre détresse, à cause de votre foi. Et maintenant nous revivons, puisque vous autres, vous tenez bon dans le Seigneur. Comment pourrions-nous assez rendre grâce à Dieu à votre sujet, pour toute la joie que nous avons à cause de vous devant notre Dieu? Nous le prions avec ardeur, jour et nuit, pour que nous puissions revoir votre visage et compléter ce qui manque à votre foi. Que Dieu lui-même, notre Père, et que notre Seigneur Jésus nous trace le chemin jusqu’à vous. Que le Seigneur vous donne, entre vous et à l’égard de tous les hommes, un amour de plus en plus intense et débordant, comme celui que nous avons pour vous. Et qu’ainsi il affermisse vos cœurs, les rendant irréprochables en sainteté devant Dieu notre Père, lors de la venue de notre Seigneur Jésus avec tous les saints. Amen.

R/ Rassasie-nous de ton amour, Seigneur : nous serons dans la joie.
Tu fais retourner l’homme à la poussière ; tu as dit : « Retournez, fils d’Adam ! » À tes yeux, mille ans sont comme hier, c’est un jour qui s’en va, une heure dans la nuit.
Apprends-nous la vraie mesure de nos jours : que nos cœurs pénètrent la sagesse. Reviens, Seigneur, pourquoi tarder ? Ravise-toi par égard pour tes serviteurs.
Rassasie-nous de ton amour au matin, que nous passions nos jours dans la joie et les chants. Que vienne sur nous la douceur du Seigneur notre Dieu ! Consolide pour nous l’ouvrage de nos mains.

Évangile : Mt 24, 42-51
En ce temps-là, Jésus disait à ses disciples : « Veillez, car vous ne savez pas quel jour votre Seigneur vient. Comprenez-le bien : si le maître de maison avait su à quelle heure de la nuit le voleur viendrait, il aurait veillé et n’aurait pas laissé percer le mur de sa maison. Tenez-vous donc prêts, vous aussi: c’est à l’heure où vous n’y penserez pas que le Fils de l’homme viendra. Que dire du serviteur fidèle et sensé à qui le maître a confié la charge des gens de sa maison, pour leur donner la nourriture en temps voulu ? Heureux ce serviteur que son maître, en arrivant, trouvera en train d’agir ainsi ! Amen, je vous le déclare: il l’établira sur tous ses biens. Mais si ce mauvais serviteur se dit en lui-même : “Mon maître tarde”, et s’il se met à frapper ses compagnons, s’il mange et boit avec les ivrognes, alors quand le maître viendra, le jour où son serviteur ne s’y attend pas et à l’heure qu’il ne connaît pas, il l’écartera et lui fera partager le sort des hypocrites ; là, il y aura des pleurs et des grincements de dents. »
Prière sur les offrandes
En célébrant le mémorial de notre salut, nous te supplions, Seigneur: que le sacrement de ton amour soit pour nous le signe de l’unité et le lien de la charité. Par Jésus.

« Vous n’avez qu’un seul Maître, le Christ ; vous êtes tous frères », dit le Seigneur.
Prière après la communion :
Que la participation à la table du Christ nous sanctifie, Seigneur ; afin que, membres de son corps, nous devenions vraiment ce que nous avons reçu. Par Jésus.
Méditation
Le maître de maison vient. Ce qui est inconnu c’est le moment de cette venue. Nous sommes certains qu’il viendra mais nous ne savons pas dire quand. La posture dans laquelle il nous trouvera déterminera notre sanction. S’il nous trouve conformes et fidèles à sa parole il nous plongera dans le bonheur. A contrario si nous choisissons une vie de désordre, l’immoralité, la bestialité, l’ivrognerie nous n’aurons pas part au royaume avec lui.
