She is the first Franciscan woman from North America to be canonized. A woman of great valour, this beloved mother of outcasts spent her early years in central New York, where she served as a leader in the field of health care, education, and of her own congregation. Responding to a call to care for the poor sick on the the Sandwich Islands, she devoted 35 years to caring for those afflicted with Hansen’s disease on Kalaupapa, Molokai, Hawaii.

Almighty ever-living God, who govern all things, both in heaven and on earth, mercifully hear the pleading of your people and bestow your peace on our times. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever.
First reading: 1 Samuel 24:3-21
Saul took three thousand picked men from all Israel and went in search of David and his men in the direction of the wild goat crags. When he came to the sheepfolds along the way, he found a cave, which he entered to relieve himself. David and his men were occupying the inmost recesses of the cave. David’s servants said to him, “This is the day of which the Lord said to you, ‘I will deliver your enemy into your grasp; do with him as you see fit.'” So David moved up and stealthily cut off an end of Saul’s mantle. Afterward, however, David regretted that he had cut off an end of Saul’s mantle. He said to his men, “The Lord forbid that I should do such a thing to my master, the Lord’s anointed, as to lay a hand on him, for he is the Lord’s anointed.” With these words David restrained his men and would not permit them to attack Saul. Saul then left the cave and went on his way. David also stepped out of the cave, calling to Saul, “My lord the king!” When Saul looked back, David bowed to the ground in homage and asked Saul: “Why do you listen to those who say, ‘David is trying to harm you’? You see for yourself today that the Lord just now delivered you into my grasp in the cave. I had some thought of killing you, but I took pity on you instead. I decided, ‘I will not raise a hand against my lord, for he is the Lord’s anointed and a father to me.’ Look here at this end of your mantle which I hold. Since I cut off an end of your mantle and did not kill you, see and be convinced that I plan no harm and no rebellion. I have done you no wrong, though you are hunting me down to take my life. The Lord will judge between me and you, and the Lord will exact justice from you in my case. I shall not touch you. The old proverb says, ‘From the wicked comes forth wickedness.’ So I will take no action against you. Against whom are you on campaign, O king of Israel? Whom are you pursuing? A dead dog, or a single flea! The Lord will be the judge; he will decide between me and you. May he see this, and take my part, and grant me justice beyond your reach!” When David finished saying these things to Saul, Saul answered, “Is that your voice, my son David?” And Saul wept aloud. Saul then said to David: “You are in the right rather than I; you have treated me generously, while I have done you harm. Great is the generosity you showed me today, when the Lord delivered me into your grasp and you did not kill me. For if a man meets his enemy, does he send him away unharmed? May the Lord reward you generously for what you have done this day. And now, I know that you shall surely be king and that sovereignty over Israel shall come into your possession. »

Meditation
“He called them to send them to preach and to have authority over demons.” St. Augustine said that God, who created us without our help, will not save us without our help; he wants us to play our part in gaining our salvation. To this effect, he calls us to follow him and partake in his mission, just like he called the 12 apostles. We have to spread the Good News in the world by our words and actions. We have to help rid the world of sin in all its forms and defend moral values in our society. We have to teach those around us compassion, so that they may forgive rather than seek vengeance. We have to learn to show mercy even to those who offend us, like David did to Saul. Let us ask God for the grace to always remember our missionary calling, so that every day we may strive to save our souls and the souls of others.

Originaire de la région de Lyon, il se marie et vit à la cour de l’empereur Charlemagne. En accord avec sa femme, après sept ans de vie commune il se consacre à Dieu au monastère d’Ambronay-01500, en Bresse. Il est nommé archevêque de Vienne sur le Rhône, en 810. En 837, il fonde l’abbaye de Romans où il mourut.

1ère lecture : 1 S 24, 3-21
En ces jours-là, Saül prit trois mille hommes, choisis dans tout Israël, et partit à la recherche de David et de ses gens en face du Rocher des Bouquetins. Il arriva aux parcs à moutons qui sont en bordure de la route; il y a là une grotte, où Saül entra pour se soulager. Or, David et ses hommes se trouvaient au fond de la grotte. Les hommes de David lui dirent: «Voici le jour dont le Seigneur t’a dit: “Je livrerai ton ennemi entre tes mains, tu en feras ce que tu voudras.» David vint couper furtivement le pan du manteau de Saül. Alors le cœur lui battit d’avoir coupé le pan du manteau de Saül. Il dit à ses hommes: «Que le Seigneur me préserve de faire une chose pareille à mon maître, qui a reçu l’onction du Seigneur : porter la main sur lui, qui est le messie du Seigneur.» Par ses paroles, David retint ses hommes. Il leur interdit de se jeter sur Saül. Alors Saül quitta la grotte et continua sa route. David se leva, sortit de la grotte, et lui cria: «Mon seigneur le roi!» Saül regarda derrière lui. David s’inclina jusqu’à terre et se prosterna, puis il lui cria: «Pourquoi écoutes-tu les gens qui te disent: “David te veut du mal”? Aujourd’hui même, tes yeux ont vu comment le Seigneur t’avait livré entre mes mains dans la grotte; pourtant, j’ai refusé de te tuer, je t’ai épargné et j’ai dit: “Je ne porterai pas la main sur mon seigneur le roi qui a reçu l’onction du Seigneur.” Regarde, père, regarde donc: voici dans ma main le pan de ton manteau. Puisque j’ai pu le couper, et que pourtant je ne t’ai pas tué, reconnais qu’il n’y a en moi ni méchanceté ni révolte. Je n’ai pas commis de faute contre toi, alors que toi, tu traques ma vie pour me l’enlever. C’est le Seigneur qui sera juge entre toi et moi, c’est le Seigneur qui me vengera de toi, mais ma main ne te touchera pas ! Comme dit le vieux proverbe: “Des méchants sort la méchanceté.” C’est pourquoi ma main ne te touchera pas. Après qui donc le roi d’Israël s’est-il mis en campagne ? Après qui cours-tu donc? Après un chien crevé, après une puce? Que le Seigneur soit notre arbitre, qu’il juge entre toi et moi, qu’il examine et défende ma cause, et qu’il me rende justice, en me délivrant de ta main!» Lorsque David eut fini de parler, Saül s’écria: «Est-ce bien ta voix que j’entends, mon fils David?» Et Saül se mit à crier et à pleurer. Puis il dit à David: «Toi, tu es juste, et plus que moi : car toi, tu m’as fait du bien, et moi, je t’ai fait du mal. Aujourd’hui tu as montré toute ta bonté envers moi: le Seigneur m’avait livré entre tes mains, et tu ne m’as pas tué! Quand un homme surprend son ennemi, va-t-il le laisser partir tranquillement? Que le Seigneur te récompense pour le bien que tu m’as fait aujourd’hui. Je sais maintenant que tu régneras certainement, et que la royauté d’Israël tiendra bon en ta main.»

En ce temps-là, Jésus gravit la montagne, et il appela ceux qu’il voulait. Ils vinrent auprès de lui, et il en institua douze pour qu’ils soient avec lui et pour les envoyer proclamer la Bonne Nouvelle avec le pouvoir d’expulser les démons. Donc, il établit les Douze: Pierre – c’est le nom qu’il donna à Simon –, Jacques, fils de Zébédée, et Jean, le frère de Jacques – il leur donna le nom de «Boanerguès», c’est-à-dire: «Fils du tonnerre» – André, Philippe, Barthélemy, Matthieu, Thomas, Jacques, fils d’Alphée, Thaddée, Simon le Zélote, et Judas Iscariote, celui-là même qui le livra.

Méditation :
Jésus s’en va dans la montagne, un lieu à l’écart, pour un événement important. Une refondation, une nouvelle genèse, avec un échantillon d’humanité, pas vraiment la fine fleur, la suite le montrera, des braves gens comme vous et moi : Pierre, Jacques, Jean… Il les institue, les investit d’une mission, en nommant, et même renommant certains pour l’occasion. L’aventure peut commencer. C’est important de savoir qui on est, qui nous envoie, pour être ambassadeur ! Un nom se reçoit toujours d’un autre. Il est le gage d’une confiance et une ouverture sur un avenir. Jésus veut « qu’ils soient avec lui ». Projet de communion pour toute l’humanité, qu’il commence humblement avec Pierre, Jacques, Jean… Que nos espérances les plus folles pour le monde puissent trouver un début de réalisation avec ces premiers appelés.

En ces jours-là, au retour de l’armée, lorsque David revint après avoir tué le Philistin, les femmes sortirent de toutes les villes d’Israël à la rencontre du roi Saül pour chanter et danser au son des tambourins, des cris de joie et des cymbales. Les femmes dansaient en se renvoyant ce refrain: «Saül a tué ses milliers, et David, ses dizaines de milliers.» Saül le prit très mal et fut très irrité. Il disait: «À David on attribue les dizaines de milliers, et à moi les milliers ; il ne lui manque plus que la royauté!» Depuis ce jour-là, Saül regardait David avec méfiance. Saül dit à son fils Jonathan et à tous ses serviteurs son intention de faire mourir David. Mais Jonathan, le fils de Saül, aimait beaucoup David et il alla le prévenir: «Mon père Saül cherche à te faire mourir. Demain matin, sois sur tes gardes, mets-toi à l’abri, dissimule-toi. Moi, je sortirai et je me tiendrai à côté de mon père dans le champ où tu seras. Je parlerai de toi à mon père, je verrai ce qu’il en est et je te le ferai savoir.» Jonathan fit à son père Saül l’éloge de David; il dit: «Que le roi ne commette pas de faute contre son serviteur David, car lui n’a commis aucune faute envers toi. Au contraire, ses exploits sont une très bonne chose pour toi. Il a risqué sa vie, il a frappé à mort Goliath le Philistin, et le Seigneur a donné une grande victoire à tout Israël : tu l’as vu et tu en as été heureux. Pourquoi donc commettre une faute contre la vie d’un innocent, en faisant mourir David sans motif?» Saül écouta Jonathan et fit ce serment: «Par le Seigneur vivant, il ne sera pas mis à mort!» Alors Jonathan appela David et lui répéta tout ce que le roi avait dit. Puis il le conduisit à Saül, et David reprit sa place comme avant.

En ce temps-là, Jésus se retira avec ses disciples près de la mer, et une grande multitude de gens, venus de la Galilée, le suivirent. De Judée, de Jérusalem, d’Idumée, de Transjordanie, et de la région de Tyr et de Sidon vinrent aussi à lui une multitude de gens qui avaient entendu parler de ce qu’il faisait. Il dit à ses disciples de tenir une barque à sa disposition pour que la foule ne l’écrase pas. Car il avait fait beaucoup de guérisons, si bien que tous ceux qui souffraient de quelque mal se précipitaient sur lui pour le toucher. Et lorsque les esprits impurs le voyaient, ils se jetaient à ses pieds et criaient: «Toi, tu es le Fils de Dieu!» Mais il leur défendait vivement de le faire connaître.

Méditation :
Hier, les Pharisiens tenaient conseil avec les Hérodiens pour faire périr Jésus, et aujourd’hui, le voilà entouré d’une foule venue de loin pour se faire guérir. Quel contraste ! Quel homme menacé de mort agirait ainsi ? Un guérisseur, aussi puissant soit-il, aurait cessé toute activité pour protéger sa vie. Mais pour le moment, personne autour de lui ne se pose cette question. La foule suit Jésus parce qu’elle a été guérie et rassasiée. Jésus le sait, c’est pourquoi il rabroue les esprits impurs quand ils crient : « Tu es le Fils de Dieu ». Leur connaissance n’est qu’extérieure. Il faut attendre que Jésus se manifeste sur la croix pour qu’un centurion puisse dire en vérité, à la fin de l’évangile : « Vraiment, cet homme état Fils de Dieu ! »

When David and Saul approached (on David’s return after slaying the Philistine), women came out from each of the cities of Israel to meet King Saul, singing and dancing, with tambourines, joyful songs, and sistrums. The women played and sang: “Saul has slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands.” Saul was very angry and resentful of the song, for he thought: “They give David ten thousands, but only thousands to me. All that remains for him is the kingship.” And from that day on, Saul was jealous of David. Saul discussed his intention of killing David with his son Jonathan and with all his servants. But Saul’s son Jonathan, who was very fond of David, told him: “My father Saul is trying to kill you. Therefore, please be on your guard tomorrow morning; get out of sight and remain in hiding. I, however, will go out and stand beside my father in the countryside where you are, and will speak to him about you. If I learn anything, I will let you know.” Jonathan then spoke well of David to his father Saul, saying to him: “Let not your majesty sin against his servant David, for he has committed no offense against you, but has helped you very much by his deeds. When he took his life in his hands and slew the Philistine, and the Lord brought about a great victory for all Israel through him, you were glad to see it. Why, then, should you become guilty of shedding innocent blood by killing David without cause?” Saul heeded Jonathan’s plea and swore, “As the Lord lives, he shall not be killed.” So Jonathan summoned David and repeated the whole conversation to him. Jonathan then brought David to Saul, and David served him as before.

Meditation
“You are the Son of God.” The demons that Jesus cast out recognise him as the Son of God. He came to liberate us from all the evil spirits that torment us. There are spiritual forces that assail us, and Jesus is more powerful than them; he will drive them away if we invite him into our lives. There are also vices that plague our relations with others and destroy our society. Jesus came to overcome them as well, and he wants us to cooperate with him in this task. He wants that we, like Jonathan, should stand up against jealousy, injustice and all forms of wickedness. Just as Jonathan defended David against the jealousy of Saul and convinced Saul not to commit the injustice of killing David, we should stand for justice and defend those who suffer various forms of oppression and discrimination. Like Christ, we too should drive out vice from our lives and our society, and promote the practice of virtue.

Il y eut à Rome une fillette âgée entre douze et quinze ans qui mourut volontairement pour sa foi en Jésus-Christ, lors de la persécution de Dioclétien. Comme on ne savait pas exactement son nom, celui d’Agnès qui signifie « Agneau » lui fut attribué.
Antienne d’ouverture :
Sainte Agnès a combattu jusqu’à la mort pour être fidèle à son Dieu ; elle n’a pas craint les menaces des impies : elle était fondée sur le roc.
Prière d’ouverture :
Dieu éternel et tout-puissant, tu choisis les créatures les plus faibles pour confondre les puissances du monde ; tandis que nous célébrons l’anniversaire du martyre de sainte Agnès, accorde-nous d’imiter sa fermeté dans la foi. Par Jésus.

En ces jours-là, le Philistin Goliath venait tous les jours défier l’armée d’Israël. David dit à Saül: «Que personne ne perde courage à cause de ce Philistin. Moi, ton serviteur, j’irai me battre avec lui.» Saül répondit à David: «Tu ne peux pas marcher contre ce Philistin pour lutter avec lui, car tu n’es qu’un enfant, et lui, c’est un homme de guerre depuis sa jeunesse.» David insista: «Le Seigneur, qui m’a délivré des griffes du lion et de l’ours, me délivrera des mains de ce Philistin.» Alors Saül lui dit: «Va, et que le Seigneur soit avec toi!» David prit en main son bâton, il se choisit dans le torrent cinq cailloux bien lisses et les mit dans son sac de berger, dans une poche; puis, la fronde à la main, il s’avança vers le Philistin. Le Philistin se mit en marche et, précédé de son porte-bouclier, approcha de David. Lorsqu’il le vit, il le regarda avec mépris car c’était un jeune garçon; il était roux et de belle apparence. Le Philistin lui dit: «Suis-je donc un chien, pour que tu viennes contre moi avec un bâton?» Puis il le maudit en invoquant ses dieux. Il dit à David: «Viens vers moi, que je te donne en pâture aux oiseaux du ciel et aux bêtes sauvages!» David lui répondit: «Tu viens contre moi avec épée, lance et javelot, mais moi, je viens contre toi avec le nom du Seigneur des armées, le Dieu des troupes d’Israël que tu as défié. Aujourd’hui le Seigneur va te livrer entre mes mains, je vais t’abattre, te trancher la tête, donner aujourd’hui même les cadavres de l’armée philistine aux oiseaux du ciel et aux bêtes de la terre. Toute la terre saura qu’il y a un Dieu pour Israël, et tous ces gens rassemblés sauront que le Seigneur ne donne la victoire ni par l’épée ni par la lance, mais que le Seigneur est maître du combat, et qu’il vous livre entre nos mains.» Goliath s’était dressé, s’était mis en marche et s’approchait à la rencontre de David. Celui-ci s’élança et courut vers les lignes des ennemis à la rencontre du Philistin. Il plongea la main dans son sac, et en retira un caillou qu’il lança avec sa fronde. Il atteignit le Philistin au front, le caillou s’y enfonça, et Goliath tomba face contre terre. Ainsi David triompha du Philistin avec une fronde et un caillou : quand il frappa le Philistin et le mit à mort, il n’avait pas d’épée à la main. Mais David courut ; arrivé près du Philistin, il lui prit son épée, qu’il tira du fourreau, et le tua en lui coupant la tête. Quand les Philistins virent que leur héros était mort, ils prirent la fuite.

Évangile : Mc 3, 1-6
En ce temps-là, Jésus entra dans une synagogue; il y avait là un homme dont la main était atrophiée. On observait Jésus pour voir s’il le guérirait le jour du sabbat. C’était afin de pouvoir l’accuser. Il dit à l’homme qui avait la main atrophiée: «Lève-toi, viens au milieu.» Et s’adressant aux autres : « Est-il permis, le jour du sabbat, de faire le bien ou de faire le mal? de sauver une vie ou de tuer?» Mais eux se taisaient. Alors, promenant sur eux un regard de colère, navré de l’endurcissement de leurs cœurs, il dit à l’homme: «Étends la main.» Il l’étendit, et sa main redevint normale. Une fois sortis, les pharisiens se réunirent en conseil avec les partisans d’Hérode contre Jésus, pour voir comment le faire périr.

Seigneur, nous te présentons ces offrandes en la fête de sainte Agnès : accueille-les avec autant de bienveillance que tu as accueilli son martyre. Par Jésus.

Seigneur, tu as donné à la bienheureuse Agnès d’être comptée parmi les saintes du ciel, au double titre de vierge et de martyre ; par la force de cette communion, fais-nous sortir vainqueurs de toute épreuve pour obtenir un jour la gloire du Royaume. Par Jésus.
Méditation :
Aux « observateurs » qui veulent l’accuser, Jésus impose un choix qui le révélera. Il sait, comme tout le monde, quels actes sont permis. Mais il interroge sur leur sens pour essayer de faire réfléchir l’assistance sur le but de l’institution. En effet, l’institution du sabbat, avec ses interdits, est faite pour servir. Jésus tente de faire passer les gens d’une morale du péché à une morale des fins, du projet de Dieu. Ce projet, il le suggère par deux mots : le bien, et le salut, qui signifient clairement : la vie. Devant leur silence obstiné, Jésus s’agace et enfreint alors brutalement la loi qui n’accepte pas de s’incliner devant la vie. Tout ce qui ne va pas vers la vie va vers la mort. Il suffit donc de ne pas laisser nos sabbats à nous dégénérer en anti-vie.

SAINT AGNES OF ROME, VIRGIN AND MARTYR

As with so many of the early Roman martyrs, very little is nowknown about Agnes’ life. Partly this is because the detailshave been obscured by the light that shines from hermartyrdom and the cult that it inspired, and partly becauseif you are martyred at the age of 12, your life has not reallyacquired that many details in any case. Agnes was filledwith the love of God from an early age, vowed herself tocelibacy, and when the opportunity of martyrdom arose,she did not hide away but stepped forward and took it.

Behold, now she follows the Lamb who was crucified for us, powerful in virginity, modesty her offering, a sacrifice on the altar of chastity.

David put his hand into the bag and took out a stone, hurled it with the sling, and struck the Philistine on the forehead. The stone embedded itself in his brow, and he fell prostrate on the ground. Thus David overcame the Philistine with sling and stone; he struck the Philistine mortally, and did it without a sword. Meditation
“Blessed be the Lord, my Rock!” Our God is a dependable God, one on whom we can rely in all circumstances. Goliath was bigger, stronger and more experienced than David, and from a human perspective, David stood no chance against him. But David knew he could count on God, and he emerged victorious. If we invite God into our lives and always count on him, then the situations we face that look impossible will become possible. What we are unable to deal with on our own becomes reachable, because we handle it not with our own strength but with the strength of God. He gives us the strength, the wisdom, the perseverance and the openings that we need to succeed. He is always ready to assist us because he loves us, and he expects us to show the same love to others. Jesus expresses this divine expectation in the question he addressed to the Pharisees: “Is it lawful to do good on the Sabbath rather than to do evil?” This question is an invitation to question the laws and rules we impose on others; a law is only valid if it is founded on love and is meant to improve the lot of people.

Meditation
“The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.” The Pharisees felt that Jesus’ disciples should respect the law of the Sabbath rest, even if it meant they should go hungry. Jesus responded by reminding them of the instance in which David broke the Law in order to save himself and his men from starvation. Jesus thus taught them, and teaches us today, an important lesson: religious laws and observances are meaningless if they do not make us work for the welfare of people. Jesus came to save man; thus, whatever we say or do in his name should be aimed at helping ourselves and others to grow as persons. Quite often, we go to Church and at the same time we cheat, lie and oppress people around us. We attend prayer crusades and novenas, and at the same time we make life difficult for people, or we are indifferent to their plight. May the Lord give us the grace to practice true religion, and true religion brings us closer to God by bringing us closer to our neighbours.

Né Iwene Tansi en 1903 à Onitsha (Nigeria) et décédé le 20 janvier 1964 à Leicester (Angleterre), était un moine et prêtre trappiste nigérian. Il est le premier bienheureux du Nigeria et le premier prêtre béatifié d’Afrique (en dehors des saints et Martyrs africains des débuts du christianisme).

Quand il parvint à Bethléem, les anciens de la ville allèrent à sa rencontre en tremblant, et demandèrent: «Est-ce pour la paix que tu viens?» Samuel répondit: «Oui, pour la paix. Je suis venu offrir un sacrifice au Seigneur. Purifiez-vous, et vous viendrez avec moi au sacrifice.» Il purifia Jessé et ses fils, et les convoqua au sacrifice. Dieu ne regarde pas comme les hommes: les hommes regardent l’apparence, mais le Seigneur regarde le cœur.» Jessé appela Abinadab et le présenta à Samuel, qui dit: «Ce n’est pas lui non plus que le Seigneur a choisi.» Jessé présenta Shamma, mais Samuel dit: «Ce n’est pas lui non plus que le Seigneur a choisi.» Jessé présenta ainsi à Samuel ses sept fils, et Samuel lui dit: «Le Seigneur n’a choisi aucun de ceux-là.» Alors Samuel dit à Jessé: «N’as-tu pas d’autres garçons?» Jessé répondit: «Il reste encore le plus jeune, il est en train de garder le troupeau.» Alors Samuel dit à Jessé: «Envoie-le chercher : nous ne nous mettrons pas à table tant qu’il ne sera pas arrivé.» Jessé le fit donc venir: le garçon était roux, il avait de beaux yeux, il était beau. Le Seigneur dit alors: «Lève-toi, donne-lui l’onction: c’est lui!» Samuel prit la corne pleine d’huile, et lui donna l’onction au milieu de ses frères. L’Esprit du Seigneur s’empara de David à partir de ce jour-là. Quant à Samuel, il se mit en route et s’en revint à Rama.

Un jour de sabbat, Jésus marchait à travers les champs de blé; et ses disciples, chemin faisant, se mirent à arracher des épis. Les pharisiens lui disaient: «Regarde ce qu’ils font le jour du sabbat! Cela n’est pas permis.» Et Jésus leur dit: «N’avez-vous jamais lu ce que fit David, lorsqu’il fut dans le besoin et qu’il eut faim, lui-même et ceux qui l’accompagnaient ? Au temps du grand prêtre Abiatar, il entra dans la maison de Dieu et mangea les pains de l’offrande que nul n’a le droit de manger, sinon les prêtres, et il en donna aussi à ceux qui l’accompagnaient.» Il leur disait encore: «Le sabbat a été fait pour l’homme, et non pas l’homme pour le sabbat. Voilà pourquoi le Fils de l’homme est maître, même du sabbat.»

Méditation :
Les disciples se comportent comme des gens heureux et un peu insouciants. Sans doute le sont-ils. Ils sont heureux de marcher à la suite de leur maître, même s’ils ne peuvent pas encore connaître sa véritable identité. Avec lui, ils ont le sentiment d’apprendre quelque chose du mystère de Dieu. Ce que Jésus leur fait découvrir de Dieu leur ouvre des chemins de liberté et de joie. En face d’eux, il y a des pharisiens qui, eux aussi, cherchent scrupuleusement les lois et les préceptes. Mais peu à peu, ils ont confondu le but et les moyens, et ils n’ont pas été capables d’accueillir la nouveauté du Royaume inauguré par Jésus. C’est ce que le Seigneur leur reproche, et, en même temps, il nous invite, nous, à emboîter le pas des disciples sur ces chemins de liberté intérieure et à nous réjouir de sa présence dans nos vies.

SAINT HENRI

D’origine anglaise il accompagna Nicolas Breakspear le futur pape Adrien V en Suède où il fut évêque d’Uppsala en 1152 ; Soutenu par le roi saint Éric IX, il l’accompagna en Finlande où il fut tué à Abo-Turku par un opposant à la réforme qu’il entreprenait dans cette Église. Il fut canonisé en 1158 par la voix populaire. Considéré comme un martyr, il est patron de la Finlande.

Dans le butin, le peuple a choisi le meilleur de ce qui était voué à l’anathème, petit et gros bétail, pour l’offrir en sacrifice au Seigneur ton Dieu, à Guilgal.» Samuel répliqua: «Le Seigneur aime-t-il les holocaustes et les sacrifices autant que l’obéissance à sa parole? Oui, l’obéissance vaut mieux que le sacrifice, la docilité vaut mieux que la graisse des béliers. Évangile : Mc 2, 18-22
En ce temps-là, comme les disciples de Jean le Baptiste et les pharisiens jeûnaient, on vint demander à Jésus: «Pourquoi, alors que les disciples de Jean et les disciples des Pharisiens jeûnent, tes disciples ne jeûnent-ils pas?» Jésus leur dit: «Les invités de la noce pourraient-ils jeûner, pendant que l’Époux est avec eux? Tant qu’ils ont l’Époux avec eux, ils ne peuvent pas jeûner. Mais des jours viendront où l’Époux leur sera enlevé ; alors, ce jour-là, ils jeûneront. Personne ne raccommode un vieux vêtement avec une pièce d’étoffe neuve ; autrement le morceau neuf ajouté tire sur le vieux tissu et la déchirure s’agrandit. Ou encore, personne ne met du vin nouveau dans de vieilles outres; car alors, le vin fera éclater les outres, et l’on perd à la fois le vin et les outres. À vin nouveau, outres neuves.»
Prière sur les offrandes :
Seigneur, accorde-nous la grâce de vraiment participer à cette eucharistie; Car chaque fois qu’est célébré ce sacrifice en mémorial, c’est l’ouvre de notre Rédemption qui s’accomplit. Par Jésus.

Prière après la communion :
Pénètre-nous, Seigneur, de ton esprit de charité, Afin que soient unis par ton amour ceux que tu as nourris d’un même pain. Par Jésus.
Méditation :
A bien écouter Jésus, des choses simples apparaissent. Pas de jeûne à l’heure de la fête, mais seulement en l’absence de l’époux. En matière de vêtement, c’est le neuf qui est meilleur ; en matière de vin, c’est le vieux ! Ce qui nous est rappelé, c’est simplement que tout ne saurait servir à tout et qu’on ne peut sans inconvénient mélanger n’importe quoi avec n’importe quoi. Vous aimez ce qui est vieux ? Vous avez raison, quant à la qualité. Mais n’oubliez pas que le vieux est aussi fragile. Vous aimez le neuf ? N’oubliez pas que sa vigueur peut être destructive ; et si vous laissez faire craquer les récipients sans lesquels il est inutilisable, il se perdra avec eux. Deux instructions : il y a du bon en tout et puis il faut mettre ensemble ce qui va ensemble. Il y a donc du bon dans la fête et il y a du bon dans le jeûne. Il y a un temps pour se lamenter et un temps pour danser.

First reading: 1 Samuel 15:16-23
Samuel said to Saul: “Stop! Let me tell you what the Lord said to me last night.” Saul replied, “Speak!” Samuel then said: “Though little in your own esteem, are you not leader of the tribes of Israel? The Lord anointed you king of Israel and sent you on a mission, saying, ‘Go and put the sinful Amalekites under a ban of destruction. Obedience is better than sacrifice, and submission than the fat of rams. For a sin like divination is rebellion, and presumption is the crime of idolatry. Because you have rejected the command of the Lord, he, too, has rejected you as ruler.”

Gospel: Mark 2:18-22
The disciples of John and of the Pharisees were accustomed to fast. People came to Jesus and objected, “Why do the disciples of John and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?” Jesus answered them, “Can the wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them they cannot fast. But the days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast on that day. No one sews a piece of unshrunken cloth on an old cloak. If he does, its fullness pulls away, the new from the old, and the tear gets worse. Likewise, no one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the wine will burst the skins, and both the wine and the skins are ruined. Rather, new wine is poured into fresh wineskins.”

Grant us, O Lord, we pray, that we may participate worthily in these mysteries, for whenever the memorial of this sacrifice is celebrated the work of our redemption is accomplished. Through Christ our Lord.

Meditation
“New wine is poured into new wineskins.” The new wine and the new cloth Jesus speaks of represent the Gospel, which invites us to a new way of life. This new way of life cannot fit into our usual way of doing things. It does not agree with the way of the world. The Gospel brings about transformation; it obliges us to abandon one way of life in favour of another. The new life that the Gospel calls us to live is a life of submission to God and obedience to his commandments. As Samuel teaches us in the First Reading, there is no greater sacrifice we can offer to God than obedience; we should listen to his Word and act on it, for it is in this way that our lives are transformed. What has changed in your life since you became a Christian? Do you listen to God’s Word and try to live according to it? What are the habits and attitudes you have that God’s Word invites you to change?
