Saint THÉRÈSE D’AVILA, VIERGE ET DOCTEUR DE L’EGLISE

La première femme à recevoir le titre de docteur de l’Eglise (1970) est une mystique castillane dont les écrit tracent un chemin sûr à ceux qui veulent progresser dans la prière et la perfection chrétienne. En livrant les secrets de son expérience faite d’un amour ardent, alliée à un profond équilibre, Thérèse (1515-1582) révélait aussi où elle trouva la force de réformer le Carmel.

Comme une biche languit après l’eau vive, ainsi mon âme languit vers toi, mon Dieu. Mon âme a soif de Dieu, du Dieu vivant.
Prière d’ouverture
Dieu qui as suscité par ton Esprit, sainte Thérèse d’Avila pour montrer à l’Église le chemin de la perfection, fais-nous trouver notre nourriture dans sa doctrine spirituelle et brûler du désir de la véritable sainteté. Par Jésus Christ.
1ère lecture: Rm 2, 1-11
Toi, l’homme qui juge, tu n’as aucune excuse, qui que tu sois : quand tu juges les autres, tu te condamnes toi-même car tu fais comme eux, toi qui juges. Or, nous savons que Dieu juge selon la vérité ceux qui font de telles choses.
Et toi, l’homme qui juge ceux qui font de telles choses et les fais toi-même,penses-tu échapper au jugement de Dieu ? Ou bien méprises-tu ses trésors de bonté, de longanimité et de patience, en refusant de reconnaître que cette bonté de Dieu te pousse à la conversion ? Avec ton cœur endurci, qui ne veut pas se convertir,
tu accumules la colère contre toi
pour ce jour de colère, où sera révélé le juste jugement de Dieu, lui qui rendra à chacun selon ses œuvres. Ceux qui font le bien avec persévérance et recherchent ainsi la gloire, l’honneur et une existence impérissable, recevront la vie éternelle ; mais les intrigants, qui se refusent à la vérité pour se donner à l’injustice, subiront la colère et la fureur. Oui, détresse et angoisse pour tout homme qui commet le mal, le Juif d’abord, et le païen. Mais gloire, honneur et paix pour quiconque fait le bien, le Juif d’abord, et le païen. Car Dieu est impartial.

Je n’ai mon repos qu’en Dieu seul ;

En ce temps-là, Jésus disait : « Quel malheur pour vous, pharisiens, parce que vous payez la dîme sur toutes les plantes du jardin, comme la menthe et la rue et vous passez à côté du jugement et de l’amour de Dieu. Ceci, il fallait l’observer, sans abandonner cela.
Quel malheur pour vous, pharisiens, parce que vous aimez le premier siège dans les synagogues, et les salutations sur les places publiques. Quel malheur pour vous, parce que vous êtes comme ces tombeaux qu’on ne voit pas et sur lesquels on marche sans le savoir. »
Alors un docteur de la Loi prit la parole et lui dit : « Maître, en parlant ainsi, c’est nous aussi que tu insultes. » Jésus reprit : « Vous aussi, les docteurs de la Loi, malheureux êtes-vous, parce que vous chargez les gens de fardeaux impossibles à porter, et vous-mêmes, vous ne touchez même pas ces fardeaux d’un seul doigt. » Prière sur les offrandes Que nos offrandes puissent te plaire, Seigneur, comme savait parfaitement te plaire le cœur entièrement donné de sainte Thérèse. Prière après la communion
Seigneur notre Dieu, donne à la famille de tes serviteurs, déjà rassasiée par le pain du ciel, de pouvoir, comme Thérèse d’Avila, chanter ta miséricorde pendant l’éternité. Par Jésus.
Méditation Dieu seul est le juste juge. Il nous connaît mieux que nous-mêmes. Malgré nos péchés, il nous aime et nous fait miséricorde. Pourtant, comme les docteurs de la loi dont Jésus fustige le comportement, nous faisons porter aux autres des fardeaux que nous-mêmes ne pouvons toucher d’un seul doigt. « La mesure dont vous vous servez pour les autres servira aussi de mesure pour vous ».

Saint Teresa of Ávila (1515 – 1582)

She was born in Ávila in Spain and entered the Carmelite convent there at the age of 20. St Teresa is an outstanding example of how the contemplative life can well up and overflow into action. She wrote much on the subject of contemplative prayer and her writings are still standard works today. She was declared a Doctor of the Church by Pope Paul VI in 1970.

Like the deer that yearns for running streams, so my soul is yearning for you, my God; my soul is thirsting for God, the living God.

O God, who through your Spirit raised up Saint Teresa of Jesus to show the Church the way to seek perfection, grant that we may always be nourished by the food of her heavenly teaching and fired with longing for true holiness. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
First reading : Romans 2:1-11
No matter who you are, if you pass judgement you have no excuse. In judging others you condemn yourself, since you behave no differently from those you judge. We know that God condemns that sort of behaviour impartially: and when you judge those who behave like this while you are doing exactly the same, do you think you will escape God’s judgement? Or are you abusing his abundant goodness, patience and toleration, not realising that this goodness of God is meant to lead you to repentance? Your stubborn refusal to repent is only adding to the anger God will have towards you on that day of anger when his just judgements will be made known. He will repay each one as his works deserve. For those who sought renown and honour and immortality by always doing good there will be eternal life; for the unsubmissive who refused to take truth for their guide and took depravity instead, there will be anger and fury. Pain and suffering will come to every human being who employs himself in evil – Jews first, but Greeks as well; renown, honour and peace will come to everyone who does good – Jews first, but Greeks as well. God has no favourites.

Grant, O Lord our God, that your obedient family, whom you have fed with the Bread of heaven, may follow the example of Saint Teresa and rejoice to sing of your mercies for all eternity. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
In today’s gospel, Jesus underscores the importance of love. While acknowledging the importance of paying tithes, He cautions against neglecting social justice and the love of God, which hold utmost importance. He, as an adherent of the Law, advocate for a more compassionate approach. As we multiply rules and regulations, attempting to exert control over other people’s lives and passing judgement on them, we risk losing sight of the central values of love. It is important to question our motives for keeping rules, ensuring that our desire to appear proper and correct in external details does not lead us to harshly judge others. While external details may make us appear commendable, passing judgement on family, community, and people at large, distances us from the core values of love. Recognising that every individual has the capacity for a virtuous life, we are called to seek out this goodness in others before rushing to pass judgement on them. Rather than being quick to criticise, we should first “lift a finger to lighten” their burden. This approach may lead us to a greater appreciation for their inherent goodness and patience.

He was born in Dalmatia. He founded a monastery, a hospice, and a school, and settled down to the most important work of his life, the translation of the Bible into Latin, a translation which, with some revisions, is still in use today. He died at Bethlehem.

O God, who gave the Priest Saint Jerome a living and tender love for Sacred Scripture, grant that your people may be ever more fruitfully nourished by your Word and find in it the fount of life. Meditation
How swiftly I often react when things do not go the way I deem best! When someone else faces a public scandal, I cry out “Justice! Justice! And Justice quickly!” However, when it is me in the spotlight, I plead: “Mercy! Mercy on me, Lord!!” I am quick to complain and curse when someone utters a word that pulls me out of my comfort zone! I have often forgotten that ‘revenge belongs to Yahweh’. And cursing? I recall that in the Letter of Jude, even Archangel Michael refrained from cursing Lucifer during their dispute over the body of Moses. May God grant me a spirit of gratitude for every situation.

‘’Ignorer les Ecritures, c’est ignorer le Christ’’. Cette maxime de Jérôme (vers 340-420) est la clé de sa vie, toute consacrée à traduire et à commenter la Bible. Venu à Rome pour faire ses études, le jeune Dalmate s’y enthousiasme pour la vie de l’esprit.

Que les paroles de Dieu soient toujours sur tes lèvres ; médite-les jour et nuit, veille à les accomplir en tout ce qu’elles contiennent : alors ta vie prendra sens et valeur.

Dieu qui as donné à saint Jérôme de goûter la sainte Écriture et d’en vivre intensément, fais que ton peuple soit davantage nourri de ta Parole et trouve en elle une source de vie. Par Jésus.

Méditation
Dieu est avec nous. Avons-nous une conscience aigue de cette présence de Dieu à nos côtés ? Jésus a le visage résolu parce qu’il est convaincu que Le Père est avec lui. A la différence des apôtres, il ne laisse pas les émotions prendre le dessus dans ces prises de décisions. Développons véritablement cette conscience de « Dieu est avec nous » afin que en voyant notre sérénité devant les situations difficiles, d’autres viennent s’accrocher à nous pour aller avec nous à Jésus.

Saint Michael is mentioned in the Apocalypse as the leader of the heavenly host; St Gabriel appears in Daniel and was also the bearer of the Annunciation to the Blessed Virgin Mary. St Raphael in the Book of Tobit heals Tobit of his blindness. His name means God heals.

Meditation
Indeed, the realisation that Jesus knows Nathanael is a profound opportunity for gratitude. Acknowledging that Jesus knows me and calls me by my name since the day I was baptised, and that I have a Guardian Angel, is a reason to thank God. My gratitude extends to God for my life, my Patron Saint, and my sisters and brothers. In this light, the Hymn: “Thank you for every new good morning” takes on a deeper and more meaningful significance for me.

C’est toi le roi d’Israël ! » Jésus reprend : « Je te dis que je t’ai vu sous le figuier, et c’est pour cela que tu crois ! Tu verras des choses plus grandes encore. » Et il ajoute : « Amen, amen, je vous le dis : vous verrez le ciel ouvert, et les anges de Dieu monter et descendre au-dessus du Fils de l’homme. »

Avec nos humbles prières, Seigneur, nous t’offrons le sacrifice d’action de grâce ; puisque les anges le portent en présence de ta gloire, daigne l’accueillir avec bonté, et fais qu’il nous obtienne le salut. Par Jésus.

Méditation
La célébration des archanges nous invite à méditer sur trois aspects de notre vie. Primo, la place du nom. Tous les trois archanges ont un nom qui détermine leur fonction et leurs actions. Secundo, les archanges sont là pour mener certains combats pour nous. Dieu nous les donne comme allié dans le combat spirituel. Mais comment les invoquons-nous ? Tercio les archanges, sont des anges restés fidèles à Dieu. La finalité de leur mission est de transmettre message du salut de Dieu aux Hommes. Les écoutons-nous ?

Meditation
Good Jesus! I once heard that this Lazarus did not go to Heaven simply because he was poor on earth, or the rich man did not end up in Hell solely because of his wealth. It is a reminder that my earthly status, whether poor or rich, does not determine my eternal destination. Heavenly Father, daily remind me that You made me to know You, to love You, to serve You in my neighbour, and to find happiness with You in Heaven when my earthly journey ends.

1ère lecture : Amos 6, 1a.4-7
Ainsi parle le Seigneur de l’univers : Malheur à ceux qui vivent bien tranquilles dans Sion, et à ceux qui se croient en sécurité sur la montagne de Samarie. Couchés sur des lits d’ivoire, vautrés sur leurs divans, ils mangent les agneaux du troupeau, les veaux les plus tendres de l’étable ; ils improvisent au son de la harpe, ils inventent, comme David, des instruments de musique ; ils boivent le vin à même les amphores, ils se frottent avec des parfums de luxe, mais ils ne se tourmentent guère du désastre d’Israël ! 2ème lecture : 1 Timothée 6, 11-16

C’est à elle que tu as été appelé, c’est pour elle que tu as prononcé ta belle profession de foi devant de nombreux témoins. Et maintenant, en présence de Dieu qui donne vie à tous les êtres, et en présence du Christ Jésus qui a témoigné devant Ponce Pilate par une belle affirmation, voici ce que je t’ordonne : garde le commandement du Seigneur, en demeurant sans tache, irréprochable jusqu’à la Manifestation de notre Seigneur Jésus Christ. Évangile : Luc 16, 19-31
« Tu as reçu le bonheur, et Lazare, le malheur. Maintenant, lui, il trouve ici la consolation, et toi, la souffrance » En ce temps-là, Jésus disait aux pharisiens : « Il y avait un homme riche, vêtu de pourpre et de lin fin, qui faisait chaque jour des festins somptueux. Devant son portail gisait un pauvre nommé Lazare, qui était couvert d’ulcères. Il aurait bien voulu se rassasier de ce qui tombait de la table du riche ; mais les chiens, eux, venaient lécher ses ulcères. Or le pauvre mourut, et les anges l’emportèrent auprès d’Abraham. Le riche mourut aussi, et on l’enterra. Au séjour des morts, il était en proie à la torture ; levant les yeux, il vit Abraham de loin et Lazare tout près de lui. Méditation
La possession de biens matériels ne change pas l’Homme, mais révèle la vraie nature cachée de celui qui les possède. En effet, le message tant d’Amos que de l’évangile est de mettre en relief l’insensibilité voire l’indifférence que l’on peut exprimer face à la souffrance apparente d’autrui. Regarder dans les périphéries comme nous l’exhorte le pape François peut nous aider à ne pas oublier cette invitation de saint Paul : empare-toi de la vie éternelle! C’est à elle que tu as été appelé, c’est pour elle que tu as prononcé ta belle profession de foi devant de nombreux témoins.

Petit berger landais, d’une intelligence vive, ‘’Monsieur Vincent’’ (1581-1660) devint prêtre et prit conscience des misères de son temps. Il voulut y porter remède par des œuvres d’assistance, avec l’aide des Dames de Charité, et par la fondation de deux congrégations : les Prêtres de la Mission devaient diriger les séminaires et évangéliser les campagnes, les Filles de la Charité devaient soigner les pauvres et les enfants abandonnés. Son action était fécondée par la prière.

En ce temps-là, comme tout le monde était dans l’admiration devant tout ce qu’il faisait, Jésus dit à ses disciples : « Ouvrez bien vos oreilles à ce que je vous dis maintenant : le Fils de l’homme va être livré aux mains des hommes. » Mais les disciples ne comprenaient pas cette parole, elle leur était voilée, si bien qu’ils n’en percevaient pas le sens, et ils avaient peur de l’interroger sur cette parole.
Prière sur les offrandes
Seigneur, tu donnais à Saint Vincent la force de conformer toute sa vie aux saints mystères qu’il célébrait ; fais que nous devenions nous même, par la puissance de cette Eucharistie, une offrande agréable à tes yeux. Par Jésus.

Proclamons l’amour du Seigneur, ses merveilles pour les hommes : il a rassasié ceux qui avaient faim et désaltéré ceux qui avaient soif.

Déjà réconfortés par cette Eucharistie, nous te supplions humblement, Seigneur : permets que l’exemple de Saint Vincent nous stimule et nous soutienne , afin que nous allions comme ton fils, annoncer aux pauvres la Bonne Nouvelle. Par Jésus.
Méditation
De même que le message de l’universalité de la foi donné par les anges peut rester voilé pour le peuple d’Israël, de même le message du salut par la souffrance donné par le Christ est voilé pour les disciples. Les messages divins ont besoin d’être reçu non dans la chair mais en esprit. Il nous faut donc savoir fléchir les genoux devant l’immensité des mystères divins pour recueillir la serve qu’il faut pour notre existence heureuse. Ne restons pas simplement dans l’admiration du merveilleux de notre foi, mais sachons demander à Dieu de nous éclaircir quand tout semble obscur pour nous. Evitons juste les récriminations et la peur qui ne peuvent que conduire à notre perte.
